that knew him, and so many fellow racers will always remember him, and how he loved life. Not passing time... but really living. He will be missed by all that had the privilege to know him.

Wisconsin’s long time motocross racer Tommy Dretzka passed away January 12th in a snowmobile accident. Born August 26th 1960, Tom spent the majority of his life involved in racing around District 16, frequently visiting neighboring states, and making several trips to Loretta Lynn’s for the nationals. At the races, it was customary to see him volunteering time, or helping someone in the pits work on their bikes or riding. He was a long-time member of the Aztalan Cycle Club, commonly working around the starting gate area. He took great pride in always having a good time, and racing gave him that. His personality and true love for life was infectious you simply could not be around Tom, and not find some good in what was going on. It could be the worse of conditions, and Tommy was going to have fun, no matter what. Seeing Tom at the races and out riding was always a treat... He had so much energy and enthusiasm for this sport, and life in general. Tommy lived a full, always engaged life, and set an example for many of us. He loved being wide open... going fast, living hard, and being part of anything going on around him. It was always about enjoying life for Tommy. He made a huge impression on all

D16’s Final Event of ‘13 a Good One Fifth Annual Bucky Badger Dual Sport by the Madison Motorcycle Club

Cross Plains, Wisconsin - October 26 By Ken Schuck and Brian Mullane

T

his final October Saturday morning found a bit over 200 motorcycle riders enjoying the 5th annual Bucky Dual Sport Ride in Cross Plains, Wisconsin. This year’s ride provided a change of pace for riders who have ridden previous Bucky events by looping the course ‘backwards’. Pathfinder and founding father of the ride, Dale ‘Crowbait’ Kelter, said the change of direction, plus some new and expanded trails he was able to incorporate this year got lots of positive comments. The Bucky includes a mix of farm fields, woods trails and scenic backroads; the essence of dual sport riding. As with most Midwest dual sport events, the 100-mile mostly off-road Bucky route features several optional “hero” sections made up of old enduro trails and new single track put in by veteran (some would say “old”) enduro riders. 8 CYCLE USA, March 2014

One of the famous uphill challenges was a part of the historic Waunakee Enduro some 40 years ago. The Bucky route was navigated by roll chart on the paved sections, and by plenty of arrows wherever the knobbies hit the dirt. The frosty Friday night was again made mellow by a large bonfire shared by those who chose to camp out. Saturday was warm enough so that by time the riders began leaving the start at 9:00 am, the frost had melted off the seats of most bikes. The direction of the ride was the reverse of prior years, but again stopped for a much welcomed lunch at the Wisconsin River Sportsmen’s Club near Mazomanie. The sun battled the clouds throughout the day, but most riders found the temps just right for riding. Due to the event’s proximity to Halloween, some riding gear was a bit unconventional. A few have developed the tradition of wearing costumes during the ride, which can make for a double-take and a chuckle when spotted on the trail.

A few casualties were incurred by this year’s ride including tipping over a skidsteer with a brushhog mower on the front. Yes, the Madison Motorcycle Club mows the trails with equipment ranging from the aforementioned skid steer to a walk behind DRZ mower, weed wackers and chain saws. The ride concluded with the customary pulled pork, mashed potatoes and fixins’ cooked by one of the landowners and his fellow members of the Sons of the American Legion. After awarding the door prizes donated by Moose Racing/ Parts Unlimited during a humorous presentation by the club’s VP “Speedy Pete” Laubmeier, many landowners and riders adjourned to basement tavern of the American Legion Hall to continue the bench racing that is such a critical part of all motorcycle events. The Madison Motorcycle Club thanks all the riders, the hard working club members and especially the approximately fifty landowners who make this ride possible. Over the past five years the club has been able to donate nearly $20,000 to local charitable causes. As the new season is just getting ready to kick-off, make plans now for the 2014 version of this event happening on October 25th.

District 23 Awards Banquet Red Wing, Minnesota - January 18 By Mike Quinn Photos courtesy of Leslie Vanderwerf

jackets were provided by CA Apparel. Once again both the awards and the jackets were well done and well received. Along with placement awards each award winner in attendance won additional prizes provided by our many sponsors. We have been lucky enough to have Fly as our main district sponsor and they provided a whooping $12,000 in gear to our racers during the course of the season. We can’t thank them enough for the tremendous support they have given us and continue to provide.

he annual awards banquet for The Fly D23 Minnesota Championships in Motocross, Hillclimb, and Flat Track were held at Treasure Island Resort and Casino on January 18th. The hosting facility used a common banquet room for the well prepared Italian menu buffet. Once the sumptuous meal was complete each discipline retired to an individual awards presentation rooms. Dividing up the award presentations into separate rooms makes the evening proceed in a much more timely manner, while allowing each group to relive some of their favorite memories of the season, or just get in some good bench racing. Turn out was tremendous with five hundred plus racers and family members present to support the racers as they received their year-end awards. Anyone that has raced knows how much time, effort, and expense go into racing for a season championship. It goes with out saying that the awards presented to our racers are well deserved. Awards were handed out in fifty-four motocross classes including quads plus sixteen Hillclimb and twenty two Flat Track classes. This year’s 300 hundred plus awards and the class champions Kids moving up to the 65cc class and the big tracks.

Watch our web site for info on this year’s Fly Bucks program. The grand prize give away to one of our lucky banquet attendees was an Oset electric trials bike provided by Voltage MX, a new Oset dealer in Minnesota. The lucky winner was Quad MX racer Tony Ranallo. The bike was a great way to start out the awards presentation. A new award category this year went to our 50cc racers that will be graduating to the 65cc classes. Awards went to to the fol-

lowing up and coming bigger bike racers, Morgan Spetz, Evan Windahl, Hudson Romfo, Braden Long, Ashley Rasmussen, and Jake Paige. We would like to welcome them to the bigger bike ranks, and in many cases to the big mx tracks. In Hillclimb, the King of the Hill top award went to Logan Cipala. Logan was a five class winner, taking the top spot in the Open, 450, 600 and 250 classes. Not to be

outdone by his older brother, Luke Cipala took the honors in the Mini Senior and 125cc classes. Congrats to the Cipala brothers for an outstanding year. In the ATV ranks the honors went to Tyler Clark, while Gabrielle Prebe bested the Women’s class. In Flat Track, Nate Minser was the winner of the Super Mini class and 80 Open. In the old guy ranks Wade Wassels took top

honors in +30 while Tony Hauer won Senior +40, and the Open classes. +50 Masters went to David Darsow. The Maddog title went to Daniel Bailey. The MX awards saw several multi class winners with the Premier class titles in Open A and 250A going to Gavin Kadlec for the second year in a row. In the Micro ranks Tanner Schlegel won the Multispeed and Oil injected classes. Josh Boaz was the

man to beat in the 65cc classes as he titled in the 10-11 and 7-11 classes, while also taking the title in the 85cc 9-11 class, a very successful season for the youngster. Again we had our old guys out in force this season with Bill Medik winning +40A, Jack Parenteau took the class wins in the +45A and 55 classes. The Women’s class was one of bigger awards classes with nine year end awards handed out. Shayanna Wilson was top spot followed by Mariah Braastad, and Jaqueline Riess. Again congratulations to all of the class awards recipients, enjoy your hard earned well deserved honors and carry that into the 2014 season. I want to thank the many businesses and cycle shops that continue to support our sport and donate prizes for our year-end award winners. The list is long as all of our promoters tossed a small fortune into prizes. Clay Olson of PDR Performance, the guys at Cities Edge, Mike Larson of Larson Cycle, the Caswell Family from Caswell Cycle,

Dave Ingalls of 4MX Graphics, Matt Dohrn of Plainview Powersports, Jason Vaith of Vaith’s Sled and Sycle, Mike Nelson Photography, Jenny Ludowese of JL photogra-

phy, and racer photo ace Samatha Laderer, Sean Carlson of Panic Rev, Clayton Feine of Feine Tune suspension and Sue Leclaire of WholeshotMX, the crew and Moon and Heinens. I apologize in advance if I missed anyone here please know that is an unintentional oversight on my part. Lastly I would like to Congratulate Jerry Robin on the title he earned at Lorreta Lynn’s National Amateur Championship this year. These titles are extremely hard to achieve and Jerry did this year. An incredible feat and don’t forget he was racing a 1985 CR250 2-stroke. Makes his performance just a little sweeter. A last thank you is in order for Owen Reiss as he coordinated all of our awards and banquet activities. This is one of the most time consuming and hard to complete missions we have in the district, so again thanks to Owen. Congratulations to all of our award winners we hope to see all of you on the track in 2014!

Tony Ranallo winner of the Oset Trials bike.

CWIRA 2014 Season Opener Sherwood, Wisconsin - Jan 12

A

nother exciting ice racing season kicked off with the Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association (CWIRA) on Sunday January 12th on this small Sherwood, WI lake. This was suppose to be the second race of the season, but the original opener in Fremont was cancelled due to the extreme cold, with wind chills estimated to be 45 below zero. This event, just northeast of Black River Falls had good ice, and decent temps, well decent as far as what you would hope for at an ice race. With twenty-nine classes filling the day, the GP riders usually kick it all off. They’ll use part of the oval before heading into a separate section with left and right hand corners. In Open Quad GP, Graham Eichmiller got a good jump in both motos and then led to the end for the wins. Sticking with him all the way both times, Colin Wilcott finished second. Tyler Martin and Bobby Wiskerchen swapped positions each race, with Martin getting the better

Nick Blumer leads Christian Johnson and #296 Mitchell Thompson into the GP course.

of it for third overall. In the bike classes, Mitchell Leu rode his Kawasaki to two wins for the overall ahead of Mike Trulen in the Amateur division. Travis Leu went 5-3 for third overall ahead of legendary Jack Potter. In Open Pro/Am GP there were ten riders in the final. Earlier heat races determined who would make up the final, and start position choice. Madison, WI’s Luke Fox came out on top after leading most of the race, just ahead of Trey Johnson and Nick Blumer. Returning to the oval, Open Pro motorcycle brought out the fastest of the fast on bikes. Half way through the first moto the race was red flagged when a rider went down. On the re-start, the same top three riders quickly fought back into their positions with Christian Johnson holding off Nick Blumer to the finish. Merrill’s Brian Frandsen was right there for third with Luke Fox back just a few bike lengths. In the second moto, Johnson led all the way, leaving the racing behind Cody Funk grew up ice racing, and now chases D16 dirt track in the summer. him. Fox had a good start

in second, with Trey Johnson digging deep, looking for an opening to move past. The two hooked up on the second lap, and after a couple corners, Johnson found an edge, beating Fox to the finish line. The move mattered, as it was needed for second over (5-2) vs Fox’s (4-3). Frandsen finished fourth. Later in the 450 Pro class final, Johnson took the win with Fox and Blumer on his tail. Wisconsin Rapids’ fast Quad rider Craig Melville got the jump on Graham Eichmiller and Bobby Wiskerchen in the Open Pro class. Melville held

a perfect line, avoiding any mistakes for the win as the top three stayed tight all the way to the checkers. Mike Mueller was back just a little, finishing fourth. The second moto started with Melville, Eichmiller and Mueller leading out of turn one. Wiskerchen slid past Dexter Popp for fourth, and the final order was set. The race for supremacy in Open C motorcycle’s first moto came down to the last lap. Green Bay’s Tim May pulled the holeshot with Schofield’s Sierra Heindl quickly working up to second place, leading Cody Funk and

Michael Debroux. Heindl went to work, trying to make a move around May as the laps ticked down. When the white flag flew, she found a line out of turn four to take over the lead. May came right back at her and they went side by side through the lap. Heindl pulled hard out of turn four to lock down the lead, and take the win by several feet. through the opening lap. From fourth, pulling a couple great lines, Dustin Hoffman went all the way into the lead in a single lap. He never gave it up, setting a fast pace to pay attention to. In the second heat, Tad Fehrenbach, Louis Plaskey, and Brandon Hoffman all took turns leading, bringing Jeremy Flees in the mix to the end. Hoffman made it back into the lead just in time for the win. In the fourteen rider main, riders lined up in rows based on the heat races. When the cord was pulled and they flew off the line, Brandon Hoffman couldn’t be stopped, as he went wire to wire for the win. Scott Lindner and Jeremy Flees raced hard over second with Lindner getting the edge. Dustin Hoffman finished fourth as Dan Lindner made up for his heat race problems with a fifth. In the final of the Pro/Am Rubber class, it took four re-starts to finally get the class off clean. fourth. The order held with Volovsek winning, just ahead of Davis and Moelter. In Vet motorcycle racing, Jason Heindl had the best reactions grabbing the lead out of the first turn with Honda mounted Roy Nafzger right on his rear fender. Both are fast moto riders... but Nafzger may have a little more time under his belt on the ice. Nafzger followed for the first lap and a half, but then jumped into the lead as Luke Fox was now giving Heindl fits. Fox pecked away, trying to move into second but he couldn’t make a move and finished third ahead of Brian Frandsen. Heindl couldn’t get the pace in the second moto as Nafzger took the win, this time just ahead of a hard charging Luke Fox. Frandsen finished third. In the Amateur Vet class, Mike Trulen took the first moto win after a smooth inside pass on Travis Leu. Tim May finished third. Tables turned in the second and decisive moto. May took the win with Trulen having to settle for second. Trulen still won the overall battle, but May’s improvement (3-1) knocked Leu (2-3) back to third OA. The Youth motorcycle class was swept handily by Marshfield’s Mason Barth on his Suzuki. Finishing behind him in the first moto, Dustin Deimer struggled in moto two, finishing fourth as Matthew Trulen and Megan Funk beat him to the checkered flag. Late in the day, the outside

of one corner sort of saw the ice “sink” and even though it was quickly marked off by the track crew, one rider found his way into it on his quad. Waist deep in ice water, he became a good reminder to everyone else to not make the same mistake. It was a great opener for kicking off the 2014 season. Plenty of good racing, familiar faces, and some new riders to keep it as interesting as ever. Berm Benders Civil Series Banquet Mora, Minnesota - Oct. 5 By Keith McKenna

T

he weekend of October 5-6 was slated to be a big weekend of celebrating and racing at the bucolic racing facility in the central Minnesota town of Brook Park. The run-up to the year-end blowout was a great season of motocross racing with perfect weather most weekends, being enjoyed by so many at this little gem of a racing facility. Moto practice was planned for Saturday the 5th of October with the banquet on Saturday night, to be followed the next day with the first round of the 2014 Civil Series. Mother Nature intervened though on Saturday morning. Rain started to fall early with persistent and heavy precipitation throughout the day. When there is a little moisture present in the race course surface, the traction and feedback from the BBR clay is impeccable. When the surface is over-saturated with water,

the conditions resemble something more akin to racing on ice, covered in grease, soaked in mud. The decision to cancel practice for the day was made, relegating all in attendance to retreat to their motor-homes to enjoy some snacks, libations and games, or to lend a hand in preparing the banquet room for the eventual onslaught of adrenaline fueled moto racing crowd that would be looking for an outlet for their capped up energy reserves. There was over $1000 worth of prizes plus awards for the top five riders. Add in the highly coveted championship jackets for the top dogs in each class, great food and fellowship, the racers and their families were treated to a great evening to cap off the racing season at Berm Benders Raceway. Fun was had by all and the mayhem was kept to a minimum, to ensure that all present would live to fight another day. Unfortunately, the same

could not be said about the final racing day, as the rains fell throughout the night, rendering the circuit unnavigable. It still was a great night to cap off a great season for all. Kurt, Kelly and Kayla Caswell wish to thank everyone who came out to race, spectate or volunteer their time to make the 2013 season one that they will remember always. As the new season approaches, excitement is already growing for the first race, and the fun to return. Another big announcement was made... he Park Ballroom in New Prague, MN, once again hosted the Motokazie Series Awards Banquet - honoring 107 athletes that pursued a 2013 Series Award. Motokazie promotes two motorsports series. The Motokazie Supercross Series (featuring 22 races in stadium type facilities) and the Motocross Series (12 races at 2 different Minnesota facilities). A total of 174 awards were handed out along with door prizes for each award recipient. The Motocross Series witnessed some great competition and competitors in the 2013 season. In the 85cc 12-15 class Austin Nelson of Eyota, MN, ended the season with an

injury. However his stellar performance, with four first place and four second place finishes locked in his series

Dungey Wins in Indianapolis Indianapolis, Indiana - March 1 Photo by Hoppenworld.com

I

n front of 59,919 fans inside Lucas Oil Stadium, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey captured his first win of the 2014 AMA Supercross season on a night that resulted in a major shakeup in the 450SX class standings. Mike Alessi secured the holeshot to start the twenty-lap 450SX class main followed by Dungey and Honda’s Eli Tomac. Behind them several of the championship’s leading title contenders encountered misfortune, as Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, the class points leader, and KTM’s Ken Roczen, second in the standings, crashed on the start straight. Just a few feet in front of them, Suzuki’s James Stewart, third in the championship, crashed in the first turn. All three riders were able to get back on their bikes and re-enter

the race at the tail end of the twenty-two rider field. Out front Alessi had established a gap over Dungey and Tomac, but Dungey soon closed the deficit and made a pass for the lead on Lap four. Once out front, Dungey pulled away to a comfortable margin. Tomac battled with Alessi for the runner-up spot for several laps until Alessi crashed on Lap twelve. Meanwhile, Villopoto had mounted an impressive charge through the field and moved into fourth following Alessi’s crash, while Roczen went down on the same lap while running eighth. Dungey continued to pull away and won his fourteenth career 450 main event by nearly seven seconds. “We needed that win, it’s been a long season,” said Dungey, who became the fifth different 450 class winner this season. “The track got really torn up tonight, but it feels good to get

the win. I got up front pretty early and was able to hold a good pace, and not do anything stupid. It was one of the toughest races of the season for sure. We have to keep taking the championship one race at a time. It’s a great series with a lot of good riders so you have to just keep plugging away.” Tomac posted a career best finish in second, as did Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Cole Seely in third in his first 450 class start of the season filling in for injured riders Justin Barcia and Trey Canard. Villopoto held on for fourth, with Stewart finishing seventh and Roczen 21st as a result of a DNF.

The championship standings experienced a shakeup as a result of the contenders’ various fortunes. Villopoto maintained possession of the lead, which now sits at twenty-three points over Dungey, who jumped from fourth to second. Roczen fell to third and faces a twentysix point deficit, while Stewart dropped to fourth, four points behind Roczen. 250SX Results: 1.Adam Cianciarulo 2.Martin Davalos 3.Justin Bogle 4.Matthew Bisceglia 5.Blake Baggett 6.Vince Friese 7.James Decotis 8.Matthew Lemoine 9.Cole Thompson 10.Kyle Cunningham 450SX Results: 1.Ryan Dungey 2.Eli Tomac 3.Cole Seely 4.Ryan Villopoto 5.Broc Tickle 6.Andrew Short 7.James Stewart 8.Justin Brayton 9.Josh Hill 10.Dean Wilson

Minnesota’s Ryan Dungey scored his first win of the season, and is the fifth rider to win in this exciting, and close season.

Arenacross Returns to Milwaukee!

Lites podium Saturday night, Kyle White (L) finished third while team member Maxx Malatia grabbed the win.

Milwaukee, WI Jan. 31 - Feb 2 By Josh Rud www.ShiftOnePhotography.com

T

he weekend of January 31st the AMSOIL Arenacross made a long overdue return to the U.S Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The series hasn’t been to Milwaukee in over ten years, and the weekend of racing was highly anticipated by many racers and fans alike. It was a great weekend of racing with several local district riders competing Friday and Saturday as well as many more coming out for the amateur

racing on Sunday morning. The season has been cruising along with this weekend being the last stop on the east coast lites series before Tulsa. Tony Archer out of Maryland was able to clinch the victory for as east coast lites champion this weekend, having enough points that the last round won’t matter. There have been some great showings this year with several local riders doing the entire series, and making waves. Most notably Travis Sewell out of Westville Indiana having returned to Arenacross after a year off. He is sitting

eighth in points for the Arenacross class. Moving into Tulsa the top ten in points all get reset to zero to battle it out in the last four rounds to crown the champion. D17 Regular Tommy Hoffmaster, an Arenacross Veteran and past Champion made it out to watch, being brought up on stage during opening ceremonies for an interview. As of last year Arenacross changed its format to include a motocross style layout with two main events with an overall winner. They are also requiring amateurs to qualify for at least three night shows to earn the points they need to get their pro card and race Supercross through the Ricky Carmichael Road to Supercross. This has already brought in some riders coming off great amateur careers to bang bars in the close quarters of Arenacross. Right now

most notable would be Jacob Hayes out of North Carolina, now riding for the IL based TUF Racing. He started out the season a privateer on a Kawasaki after being a part of Team Green for four years in the amateur ranks. He also raced the outdoor nationals on a KTM for several rounds last summer. He was picked up by TUF Honda after one of their riders was injured in Germany and needed a replacement. He has been really shaking things up this year, taking two overall Arenacross wins this and is currently third in points. Friday night’s race saw some great action as always with the tight tracks of Arenacross. Things get very close with aggressive riding being one of the only ways to make your way through the pack. In the Arenacross lites race District 17 rider Maxx Malatia took third place for the night riding for BWR Honda. Malatia is the returning champion of west coast lites which will kick off in Sacramento this year. Right behind his team mate Kyle White finished with

a solid fourth. The lites class was packed with local riders, fourty eight total entries showed up with only thirtyone moving on to the night show that further dwindled it down to sixty riders making into the main event. Josh Struebig took ninth place and Justin Kelly took tenth after winning the LCQ. The Supermini and 50cc class had some familiar faces out there tonight as well. In Supermini Tanner Whipple out of Colona Illinois took the podium with a third place as Wisconsin’s Bryce Hansen finished second. 50cc 4-8 seen Krystian Janik and Deegan Cooley, both out of Illinois taking second and third with Talan Zollers close behind in final position of sixth place for the night. In the Arenacross class things were heating up tonight with the two fifteen lap main events getting underway. After the first main event the race has a chance of an inversion. The winning rider has to pick from three suitcases with a zero, eight, or sixteen waiting for them. Pick zero and nothing happens you start the second main with your gate pick. If the eight is pulled the front eight riders switch gate positions. If the sixteen comes up now the eight in the front row will start in the back row

making it much more difficult to get up front. Arenacross is very much about the start; it’s very hard to make passes in the short twenty to thirty second laps. Tonight the sixteen was picked putting everyone from the front row starting in the back, making for some exciting racing. Arenacross veteran Jeff Gibson out of Ohio took third with a 9-4 and Jacob Hayes took fourth with a 7-11. Travis Sewell was in the battle for the night taking ninth overall. Saturday night started off fresh with even more riders out for the chance at the night show. Fifty-one riders showed up to qualify for the Lites class making the pressure even higher to get into the top thirty one in practice. It was a great night for Maxx Malatia, taking the win in the main event with Kyle White up there with him in third. Josh Struebig and Malachi Messenger made it through the main event as well tonight with Struebig taking eleventh and Messenger twelfth. Messenger also receive the Cometic Gasket Rising Star award for being the rider in the lites class with most points, while not having a pro license. In the Supermini class Chase Sexton showed up and put in some really fast times out there. He qualified over Talon Zollers in the 50cc 7-8 class on Sunday.

Deegan Cooley, Preston Masciangelo, and Krystian Janik on the podium Friday after topping the 50cc class.

six seconds faster than second place. He had a rough main event with an unfortunate premature ending. Right off the start he got tangled up with some riders in the whoops and went down. He quickly made it back to second place, hunting the leader when a rider jumped the sixty five foot catapult and landed short, blocking the top of the landing. This brought out the red flag being the rider was hurt and blocking the track. Since the race just started its third lap it was ruled complete because over half of the four lap race was over. This left Sexton in second place unable to continue the charge. Green Bay, WI’s Mitchell Nooyen took the big win. In the 50cc race the tables were turned tonight with Deegan Cooley taking fourth, Talan Zollers fifth and Krystian Janik seventh. In the Arenacross class things were shaken up as well with a large pile-up off the

start, taking a lot of riders to the back. Travis Sewell was looking great out there tonight taking third place in the first main event, only to run into the inversion once again. This put him in eleventh for the second race leaving him with a solid sixth place overall. On Sunday the Amateur racing was underway with an early start. Everyone out there looking for points to get the invite for the national event held in Las Vegas. Many familiar faces made for some great races all day. In Collegeboy 16-24 Damon Thomas out of Elburn, Illinois took second place right behind Timmy Baake from Slinger, WI. Justin Kelly put in some good laps for second place in the Expert class and third in Pro Sport. In +35 Tony Mcvey took the win with Steve Perkins right behind him in second and Dave Pathaveren third. Larry Bank and Mike Carey rounded out the top five. CYCLE USA, March 2014

In +40 Bank took the win followed by Brian Carey and Mike Carey. Topping the day off Chase Sexton won Senior Mini and Supermini 9-15. The pits were full of local riders, all out there trying their hand at the Arenacross style track ... a stretch from from the normal stadium and motocross tracks they are used to. The weekend in Milwaukee was great, having three full days of great racing close to home. The Arenacross series is certainly evolving.

Indoors at the Cedar Lake Arena Richmond, Wis. - January 11

W

hile ice racing can be a ton of fun, there are plenty of riders that simply have no interest in it. They have two options, sit around all winter dreaming of the next season, or make the trip to one of the area indoor facilites. If looking for a race, then it will be the Cedar Lake

Arena, better known by its former name, the Sandbox. This super cool indoor facility on the western side of Wisconsin is just east of the Twin Cities, and draws riders from five states on a regular basis. A great track, warm enough for perfect riding. Heated pits, indoor concession/ casual area as well as full bleachers for spectating, and there’s no need

to take the winter off from riding. No need to drive many hours south. Open riding, and racing are close to home. Tonight’s race was the second of the season, and by the time you see this the season will have wrapped up... but the track is open through March... so don’t miss your chance to go ride. One of the first groups out coming off the gate was for the 65cc riders. The 7-9 and 10-11 classes were together, and it created some exciting racing as the younger riders held their own on the track. Iowa’s Gage Steburg was quick, and got out front right away with Ethan McMahon in second, also having made the trip from IA. Steburg, riding in the 10-11 class slowly opened a gap on his younger competitor, leading all the way to the checkers. Trevin Nelson got a good start and held down second in the 10-11

class until late when Isaac Moyle dropped him to third, ahead of Gavin Janovsky. McMahon held on for second overall and the big win in his 7-9 class. Harrison Gibson battled all moto with older riders to finish fourth overall and second in 7-9. Steburg won the second 1011 moto after leading each lap. Gavin Janovsky stepped it up and finished second ahead of Moyle, but Moyle’s 2-3 was still good for second overall ahead of Janovsky’s 4-2. Team Cobra/ 100% rider Steburg, “I’ve been doing pretty good, trying to get good holeshots, and I had gotten them all in my classes so far. I started in second this time, but did the big jump off the start, and had the lead right away. I really like the whoops because you can blitz right through them. I’d like to thank my mom, dad and my grandparents.”

Iowa’s Ethan McMahon won the 65cc 7-9 class.

Minnesota’s Nick Schnagl was fast all day, and won 250B.

Ethan McMahon was in second overall again, leading his 7-9 class until the second lap when he went down. Ewan Krisch did all he could to take advantage by taking over the class lead. McMahon was up and going pretty quick, and worked back into the lead on the white flag lap. Gibson finished third ahead of Jake Paige. When the dozen Open A riders dropped the hammer off the start, everyone else in the building had their eyes on the track to see the evening’s fastest riders tear it up. Having driven up from Illinois, Tom Hofmaster is very comfortable on these tight tracks. The former Arenacross National Champion pulled a slight advantage into the first turn, and then put his down to lead each lap for the win. Behind him, Iowa’s Dan Gifford and Kawasaki rider Andrew Sherman were close through the first lap before MN fast guy Scott Jendro dove under Sherman for third. After a mid-pack start, Nick Jackson and Joe Perron were coming on fast as well. Gifford rode a flawless moto for second as Jackson made a smooth pass on Jendro for third. Perron rounded out the top five after a great bat48

tle that included Ryan Orres as well. The second moto was even more action packed as there were position changes each lap after Hofmaster jumped to another early lead. Jendro was all over him in second with Orres, Dylan Wolff in the mix and Perron pushing through them all quickly. Mid-moto Wolff slid out in a corner, and Perron pushed Jendro high in one of the many big corners. Perron was now up to second, and hounding Hofmaster. Cities Edge Motorsports/ KB5 Suspension/ Black Diamond Graphics backed Perron, “I didn’t get the greatest start and just put my head down and got kind of aggressive. I was hoping no to piss anyone off and have a good clean race, and I think we did that. Out there, you really have to set up your moves a couple corners in advance. I worked hard to make up time in the corners, and I think that’s where I got Tommy.” After that pass, with a little over a lap to go Perron won the moto. His 5-1 was good enough for second overall ahead of Jendro (4-3). Hofmaster took the overall, and backed it up with a two moto sweep in the 250A class.

Open B had fourteen riders come off the start with South Dakota’s Austin Kienast leading Nick Schnagl, Steven Paul and Taylor Strauss. The fight for position stayed close each lap with Kienast leading till the last lap when he went down. Frustrated as he couldn’t re-fire his bike, he dropped to the back of the pack. The top three were still fender to fender when Minnesota’s Schnagl took the win ahead of Paul, Strauss and Reed Kannegiesser. Everything changed in the second moto as Rob’s Performance/ PR2 backed Strauss had his Honda out front. Paul and Schnagl were super close through the first couple laps, and Schnagl was really looking to move up, and dove in to try a pass on the second lap, bumping with Paul, taking himself to the ground and out of contention. Paul lost a couple bike lengths as Strauss pulled away. Strauss, “I got the holeshot, pulled some good lines and then just kept going. I was out front in the first moto but fell before the whoops and had to work my way up to third. I’ve been coming here for a couple years, and love it. This is super fun, and

anyone would like it. Just get up here and do it.” Strauss went 3-1 for the overall ahead of Paul who crossed in second both motos. Ryan Robinson’s 4-5 was good for third overall. Honda mounted Kollin Lund led each lap of the first Open C moto. Lucas Lockhart pushed his Kawasaki to second as Aj Walker worked up to third late in the moto, finishing just ahead of Gage Lutz and Austin Carolan. In the second moto, Lockhart grabbed the holeshot with Lund in second, doing all he could to move up. They were never more than a bike length apart. Lund, “I did all I could out there. He was all over, and I kept trying to make a pass. I chased him the entire moto. The track is mint, and you can go where you want, so I kept trying. I love this place, I was just down in Texas riding, and I am having just as much fun riding right here without all

the travel.” Lockhart was able to fend off every move thrown at him for the big win, and overall. “I got the holeshot, and could hear his bike behind me. I kept seeing him in every corner the entire time. He almost got me at the end, but I wasn’t going to give it up. It was a lot of fun for sure. I’m just trying to get some good practice and stay ready for the summer, so this is perfect, and the track is amazing.” Austin Carolan finished third for third overall ahead of Gage Lutz and Bret Holland. KTM rider Josh Boaz out of Eagan, MN was quick to show his incredible speed in the 85cc 9-12 class. He rocketed to the lead, and rode a super smooth, fast pace for the first moto win. Iowa’s Patrick Murphy was running second most of the moto, just ahead of Josh Fedder. Late in the moto, Fedder pulled a good line and caught Murphy in a small mis-

Geiger, “I got the holeshot and had a nice little lead, then Schnagl came up and made a good move. I knew he was closing, but didn’t realize he was so close, and I left the door open just enough for him to pass me. It is really nice to get some seat time in here during the winter. The track is really nice, and just a treat to ride on during the winter.” Factory Connection/ Fly/ Renthal race winner, Schnagl, “I got a decent jump off the gate and just picked my lines carefully. I just wanted to be there if I found an opening and when it came, I hit it.” 65cc 7-9 rider Louie Falardeaux. Schnagl took his Suzuki to the second moto win take, and took over second. Awesome Endurance Racing 18th Annual Three Hour Steel Shoe Event Campbellsport, Wisconsin - Jan. 19 By Dave Hollub

T

he Packers are done and the weather is perfect for getting outside, what would a determined biker do for a Sunday afternoon? I guess 125 or so guys think it is perfectly natural to stud up their bikes and hit the ice. They all combined for seventy-two team/ ironman entries to make up the starting grid for the 18th Annual Steel Shoe Fund endurance ice race. This year the race was hosted on Kettle Moraine Lake by Nan Seas Tiki Bar and Grill. Jeff Fredette (aka the Ice God) came out and worked his wonders plowing a 6.5 mile course which was a perfect mixture of tight and wide

open stretches to keep all the racers challenged. Once practice was over the waves started hitting the course. First out was the Lightweight bikes and the Jesko Racing Yamaha bike edged out John Stewart aboard the Lemon Pie Productions bike around the first corner. The Rob’s Powersports/ Smith Goggles entry ridden by Tyler Smulders was third and the Enginerd bike was fourth. Jesko Racing slipped into the lead as lap one was scored but Rob’s and then Lemon Pie were breathing down his neck. By the time the one hour mark was scored Rob’s was leading the class (5th overall) with Lemon Pie second (7th overall) with Jesko, Mr Zipper’s Rippers, and then Enginerd rounding out the top five. Two hours into the race and Rob’s was still out front with Lemon Pie only one overall position back. Jesko Racing

JR Schnabel took the Ironman and Overall win on the Fuel Powersports bike.

was holding onto the third spot while Mr Zippers and Enginerd maintained their respective spots in the top five. Despite a battle in the final hour, the Rob’s team held on and took the checkers. Tyler Smulders recounted his team’s win, “Overall it couldn’t have gone much better. The course was good. Everything went good, dad and I did what we came to do. We put our bike up top of the lightweight bike class, and I think sixth or so overall. I’m happy with our results and we will be back to do it again next year. This all went to a charity so that is a huge bonus. Thanks to our sponsors Rosine Tires, Smith Goggles, and everybody that was there, particularly Rob’s performance.” The start for wave two was the Middleweight bikes and Jim Beckman aboard the Team Honda-Davidson bike had the inside advantage as he edged out Ian Malinowski aboard the V Metal/ Sportland 2 bike. DC Riders and Finish Line Engines rounded the corner bar to bar with Arctic

Air Cooling and Heating on their rear fender. V Metal/ Sportland 2 was in the lead at the end of lap one with the Moose Racing Yamaha, DC Riders, Finish Line, and the Honda-Davidson bikes close behind. Once the first hour was in the books, Moose Racing had taken over the lead followed by DC Riders, Carlo Rossi, Arctic Air C&H and Midwest CNC in the top five. Moose Racing had DC Riders right on their rear fender at the two hour mark with Masterforce slicing their way through the entire field to run in third. Finish Line Engines and Woodstock KTM rounded off the top five. By the time the checkers flew Masterforce (Brad Rosine/ Chris Johnson/ Trey Johnson/ Sonny Johnson) had powered into the class lead with the Moose Racing (John Strangfeld/ Ryan Gilbert/Luke Fox) and DC Riders (Scott Fittshur/ Ryan Gilbert) teams in the next two overall spots, right on his back fender. The third wave was made up of the Heavyweight bikes, and when the flag dropped it was a three way battle between Retriever Racing, Kyle Johnson, and West Bend H-D down the first straight. At the second corner the West Bend H-D bike ridden by Jesse Janisch swept in from the outside and took the lead with Lance Wollin on the Retriever Racing bike on his rear fender. At the one hour mark West Bend H-D was still out front but now had Beaver Cycle Club and Team Smog right on him as they occupied the top three overall spots. During hour two the Beaver Cycle Club bike got by West Bend and Team Kaw slipped ahead of Team Smog to grab the fourth slot. Retriever racing had fallen back into the middle of the pack early in the race but now was running fifth. Beaver Cycle was forced out with a mechanical issue in hour three and West Bend H-D (Jesse Janisch/ Jeremy DeRuyter) took advantage to cruise to the class win. Retriever Racing (Lance Wollin/ Zac Rosine/ Morgan Mischler) slipped into second by the time the checkers flew with Team Kaw (Robert Newport/ Boris Mohlich) coming in right behind. The heavyweight class proved to be the tightest race as the top five slots were all within bike lengths of each other, watching for any chance to move up. The top 52

gap on the rest of the field. Fredette started to close the gap on Schnabel but when the checkers flew he still had two bikes between them. Schnabel and Fredette both finished nineteen laps for 123.5 miles as they took the top two Ironman spots. Newly crowned Ironmaiden Kristina Zmuda commented on her experience today, “This is my first season on ice and it has been a lot of fun and learning. I like GP style courses but I don’t get much chance to do it, and I wanted to try this. It was a challenge to see if I could do it so I came down. competitive, fun day for everyone involved. This year the weather held out with temperatures in the mid teens leading to great ice. The workers all did an excellent job whether they were running plows, flagging, scoring, or recovering broken bikes. Without a dedicated crew this race would not exist. The 72 teams all combined to boost the potential help the Steel Shoe Fund can extend to injured riders in the future, making it a very successful day.
