The short answer and one the makes hair stand up on the back of people’s neck... because we have to, it’s a rule. The longer version is that 41 years ago a few riders, clubs, and promoters had the vision that being an organized district in the AMA was a good thing. 1974 it came together. Clubs and promoters like Motosports Park, Galesburg Mc, Rock River Riders, Forest City Riders, Tri-City M/c, LTM, Variety Riders, Peoria M/c, Canton M/c, and guys like Ron George, Bill Tuman, Bill Maxey, Bill Baird, and women behind the scenes like Betty Tuman devoted tons of time/ effort to make the District get off the ground. I’m sure I missed some but you get the idea. They thought it would be a good idea to have numbers uniformed. Sign up and operational processes with uniform rules, to make better events for everyone involved. This is why when you show up at a race there are flaggers on jumps, or everyone doesn’t have the same “22” for their riding number. This is why you see watering being done at the track, grooming and more, it is a result of competition and being involved in our district type atmosphere. Many thousands of riders over the forty-one years have started, quit, come back, and brought their kids out to race. Now third & fourth generations of riders are enjoying what these visionaries pictured back then. A vast amount of rules in the AMA rule book were District 17 rules first, and these rules became a primary influence to our national process. Bill Maxey was a huge part of that. Do you realize that today, at 93 years old, Bill Tuman is still our

sitting Vice President! They don’t make em that way anymore. Ok... But you may say, “I don’t care about points. Really the only real racing is going to the big races, the national stuff.” Well in motocross did you know that the only way you used to get invited to the “Big” races was to be a top points earner in your district? Did you know that if you were in the top five mid season, that is how you were able to attend a qualifier in which there was only two. And you ONLY were allowed to qualify in your region. Then when you made it... it was at a track some where different every year. Today District 17 is of the best places in the country to ride, race, and enjoy time on your motorcycle or ATV. Close to the population base in the state of IL, there are a plethora of tracks and riding places. That is what 41 years of dedication and involvement has generated for you the rider of District 17. It’s not an accident there are so many quality places, it happened because all those places are Club Council members of District 17. In reference to year-end awards, I also hear, “but it’s only a “jacket” what good is that?” Well if you ever rode enough to earn a jacket much less a championship in District 17, then you already know the real meaning of all this. If you haven’t, then it’s easy to say there’s no value. You have to be dedicated, consistent, and fast enough to do well week in week out. Ride all the tracks pretty well, and it doesn’t hurt to be able to win a race or two. Once you have earned that honor of having been a top district rider, it’s signified by the infamous “jacket”. We’ve changed with the times some and gone to hoodies in some positions, but the Champion Jacket and Personalized Plaque has signified you are one of an elite bunch to earn that award. Ask anyone who has done it. See if the word “easy” is used. I bet you will find that is farthest from the truth! This doesn’t begin to cover all the other rewards... the bigger value of all the friendships, memories and shared experiences you will have with your new, and always growing racing family at the events. I could go on and on about that for a long time.

Today’s riders expect more. They won’t tolerate long sign up lines, dusty tracks, poorly managed events, poorly marked courses etc.... They want variety as well. The District 17 Schedule has eleven types of racing or organized events on its calendar. On any weekend there are multiple events at different facilties to choose from, and those all will be points paying events. So as a rider YOU choose, where you want to race, what kind of race or event you wish to attend. You don’t have to worry about who has “points” that weekend as a way to be dictated to where you have to go. This was a strong issue back in the 70’s when the District was formed. Much like you race and compete with each other on the track, clubs and promoters compete for YOUR business as well. This competition is and has been critical in the development of a strong racing organization. So the next time you hear “I don’t race for points” or “it’s only a jacket” remember there is a place for you to race and ride mainly because of the riders and clubs who work very hard to offer that. If you race every weekend, or once a month, the D17 foundation was built by the racers every weekend earning points, winning jackets and enjoying the competition, and even better with today’s gas prices they likely did it close to home! Year after year we see new riders as kids enjoying the day beginning their own racing
and riding history. Hopefully having a safe and fun time at the local tracks we all were able to grow up with and ride on ourselves! This little note is about what I know and have seen in the 40 years of being a rider/ racer in District 17, and is why we still race and ride in this District weekly. There is nothing like “home” when it comes to racing here in Illinois. Thanks for reading. Gerhard Ward AMA District 17 Mx / Sx Director PS: For me, the people named and tracks as well are a big part of why my family has been involved with our sport, District 17 and the AMA, in a hope to give back and honor those who came before us, maybe inspire others to step up in the future. Ride smart, safe and have a good time - it’s what we do!
From the Back of the Pack
By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman We are a couple of months into the season now and finally have some good cooperative weather. It has been nice to have the season start off with good weather and no cancelled events. Winters always seem so much longer than they really are. The long cold off season gives us time to recharge, and if we are wise, work out and get into shape.
Three-Time World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss coming to Springfield Mile Troy Bayliss, the Australian road racing superstar and winner of three World Superbike titles, is coming to the USA to compete in the most iconic and historic form of American motorcycle racing. Bayliss will run five events on the AMA Pro Flat Track schedule, putting him in the field against the best dirt track racers in the world. He is set to make his debut May 24th at the legendary Springfield Mile in Springfield, IL., and will run the four remaining Mile events on the 2015 schedule. “Having Troy Bayliss race with AMA Pro Flat Track, at some of our most storied venues, really multiplies the excitement and positive momentum we have as a sport right now,” said Michael Gentry, of AMA Pro Racing. “With his own exhibition race, as well as the Superprestigio and with his impressive resume with World Superbike,
British Superbike and MotoGP, Troy is one of the motorcycle racing greats. Seeing him on American dirt is a mouth-watering prospect for USA race fans. We are looking forward to the excitement created by his presence in our paddock. A lot of work went into making this a reality and we are thankful to David and Michael Lloyd of Lloyd Brothers Motorsports, Jim Dillard, Vicki Smith and Ducati North America for their vision, support and participation.” Top road racers have long used dirt track as a training regimen, but Bayliss has taken it to a new level since his retirement from full-time competition in 2008. For the last three years, he's successfully promoted the Troy Bayliss Classic flat track exhibition in Australia, an event that has attracted top AMA Pro Flat Track riders such as current Grand National Champion Jared Mees, Sammy Halbert and Henry Wiles. “Dirt and flat track racing are where I cut my teeth as a junior. Everything I have learned on the dirt helped me through my career in road racing and to find myself back where it all started makes me feel young again," said Bayliss.
If you are like me you use it to relax get the bike worked on and dream about the upcoming season. Now that it is here I know that I will be so sore for at least three days after my first ride, I will probably need help getting out of bed. At least it is a good sore, and it comes from an activity we enjoy. By the time the season is half over I will be able to walk normally the day after. I do know it has been great to be able to get outside work on the trails and enjoy the sunshine. All of our disciplines will have held events by the time you read this. Our turn-outs to date have been pretty good, up a little from last year but still not back to the turnouts from several years ago. We are still working on ideas and methods to bring our numbers back up. We need continued growth to remain healthy as an organization. District business is moving along, we had several discussions at our last meeting regarding the best manner in which to promote the district. We are also very close to having district clothing made available to all members. This is something we have had many inquiries about so with luck we will be able to have apparel available to you by the time you read this. Dale Broughton has not sought re-election to AMA congress. I want to thank him for many many years of adding value and hard work to our district. I will be replacing him at congress as the competition representative for D23. I will be on the motocross committee so if you have any ideas for rules changes at AMA level get them to me so I can submit them for consideration. I hope to see you on the tracks and trails of Minnesota, and at several events through out the year. Keep urging your friends and acquaintances to join us at the races. We all need to bring in a new member or two. Mike

So last moto of the moto sets, and first moto of the second set. Nothing much of an intermission means these two young men have to ride two long back to back motos. Smith led Ryan, Moss and Ward off the start. Entering into the optional EX section over the tires, Ward stalled letting Moss, Riley Schuhler, and brother Mason get past. Smith was cruising as Ryan and Moss started to battle. Remember this is a five lap moto, with long laps there’s time to make moves, get tired, etc. Lap two Moss started to pressure Ryan more, being the “elder” in the class at 40 years old, there still are a few tricks the new kids don’t know yet. A bobble here and a miss que there and Riley Schuhler got by Moss. Then early lap three Ward was back and by Moss and playing with Schuhler for third... for a while before Moss went past. Ryan and Ward caught the leader, Smith as they started the fourth lap. Lap

Meanwhile Ward and Smith are playing tag, the last few corners one would get by, then the next corner the other one would. Corner before a little double down the ski hill, Smith comes in hard punts Ward off the dirt into the grass. Courses like this are open to many ideas of what is in and out of bounds, but
at the end of the straight Ward regained the lead, this being only three corners to the checkers. Ward went 1-1, Smith 3-2, Moss 2-4, Ryan 4-3. Mason Schuhler recovered to a 5-6 and a 5th overall. This was just one class! Eleven Women competed today with 2014 Hare Scramble Champion Katie Redell (356) and Ironman champion Rid-
ers Choice rider Kim Chandler (20) set to square off. Chandler did her normal holeshot and gone routine in the first moto. Seems like second motos were where all the action was. Chandler killed it early in the EX section allowing Redell to get by. Morgan Wheelwright and Brittany Mierzwa are set to pounce as well.

The three had a good battle with Chandler getting back to second in moto 2, but a 1-2 in Gp is just like moto, and Redell took the win with a 2-1. Wheelwright third and Mierzwa fourth with Autumn Franklin on a Yam 125 this year a respectable fifth. Some notable mentions: Hall’s Cycles Randy Southard (682) after a little tip over got up and won the +40 class with a 1-1 score. Riders Choice Racing’s Team Green rider Garrett Ward (231) won the 85-100cc class. Hall’s Cycles’ Greg Birkland (618) put a hurtin on the rest of the +50 field. In shape and on the gas, Birkland left the rest of the geritol group in his wake. Steve Bland, Jay Hall and Gerhard Ward battled for second. 65cc winner Nate Young had close racing with Chasen Orme, racing head to head the whole day! Ryan Smith won the Open class. (Dissell was finish line flagging, in a cast from an early season tumble). Speaking of numbers. Classes offered this year +30A, 30B/C; twenty-one riders, +40; fourteen riders, +50; twenty and C class had thirty. Solid class sizes made for solid racing. There was Pro Dirt track, Hillclimb, Motocross, Stadium Mx, Hare Scramble, Trials, Ice, and Enduro riders at this event. It was great to see how it all worked. M.O.R.R. kicked off the AMA District 17 Gran Prix Championship Series with a great event! Many “firsts” happened this day for them and they stood the test of it all. From starting on time, keeping the event moving and being done at 3pm with all the riders getting a solid hour of racing and riding for one sign up fee. Ryan Moss stated “this is what GP is about, no big jumps, no tight woods, and

Kellogg MX Series Opener
Riders on the line, and ready to let the fun begin.
Kellogg, Minnesota, April 19 By Jamie Theis, Photos by Leslie Vanderwerf
M
other Nature and the weather forecasters played a little prank on Kellogg MX and Minnesota’s racers. The forecast was not good for racing; and the rain started late Saturday night. For the first time in a long time however, the rain was light and completely stopped by Sunday’s practice time. The Motokazie crew had packed in the track Saturday night after the organized practice; and that little bit of rain was just enough to make the track perfect. The racers that stuck around; and bet on the weather, had a great time racing on Sunday. This race was the second weekend of the District 23/ARMCA Motocross season and Motokazie’s first MX race of 2015. It was pretty obvious that the racers were excited to be on the track; but a little rusty around the edges. The adrenaline started to wear off by the second moto, and the muscle fatigue was starting to show. The Kellogg MX track is spread out across fifteen acres of rolling fields. After the holeshot is the first set of rollers that lead the racers to the back section of the track. The track features up-
hill whoops in the back, long sweepers that run along the edge of the property and turn to the front for a large triple table top jump. The front section of the track features another triple for the spectators; the “dirty dozen” whoops section and the 120’ “Kong” jump. Thirteen year-old Austin Kristiansen of Le Center, MN, lined up for his first ever 250C race on his new Starr Cycle Kawasaki. Sixteen riders lined the gates, and when the thirty second board went sideways it was Cody Wroe of Faribault, MN with the holeshot. Following Wroe was Payton Harrison of Lyle, Marcus Koester of Red Wing, and Kristiansen with a fourth place start in his first 250C race. I believe his Dad said that his heart almost stopped when he saw that start. The finish order for the first moto was Wroe, Harrison, Koester, Kristiansen, Brody Cherro of Chaska, and Jayden Leuth of Rochester. As stated earlier, the adrenaline started wearing off by the second motos, and that created some more challenging races. The second moto of 250C was even more exciting for the young Kristiansen. At the holeshot Kristiansen was pinched out and had to back off, or risk a crash. The
group of sixteen was still pretty clustered together at the back uphill whoops, when Kristiansen got hit from behind. The hit forced him into the median, which left Kristiansen in last place. By the finish of the first lap Kristiansen had passed three riders to thirteenth place. In the second lap Kristiansen moved up to seventh; and by the third lap he was in sixth. His parents were very proud of his persistence. The second moto finish order was: Wroe, Harrison, Koester, Leuth, Cherro, Kristiansen, Grosz, Herber, Alberts, Hess, Wadd, Chamberland, Streeton, Andersen, and Bailey. Wroe had a good day on his Yamaha. In addition to sweeping both 250C motos, he took the overall in 14-24C, after going 2-1. In the first moto Levi Buckley took the win. Wroe came back in the second mot ahead of Buckley for the win and overall. Nate Meyers finished third in both motos ahead of Matt Hendrix and Brody Cherro in the eleven rider group. Saturday practice at Kellogg MX was sunny and well attended. The largest group of riders appeared to be the 85cc bikes and a whole gang of pw50s. It was great to see the numbers up of the little CYCLE USA, May 2015

riders. Many of the 85cc riders stuck around for Sunday racing too. The 85cc 9-12 class had a great turnout, with some of the state’s fastest young guys getting some early track time. Gavin Janovsky of Elko, MN, went 1-1 in his motos. Gavin Tilford of Pine Island, MN, back in the saddle again after a serious accident last summer took a second in his first moto. Some Motokazie Supercross racers from Iowa showed up to test their skills against the Minnesota boys; Cole Busch and Ethan Wilkes both of Cresco, IA. Tyler Otterdahl of Mayer, MN made it back from the Indiana Loretta’s qualifiers in time to race his buddies,
and finished 4-3 for third overall, just edging out Cameron Skaalerud (3-4). Josh Boaz continued to show his speed, winning both the 85cc 12-15 class, and SuperMini 12-15. He swept all four motos, riding nearly perfect all the way. Janovsky was second in both of the 85cc motos, while Myles Dettmann was runner-up in SuperMini. Boaz did find it a little tougher in the Schoolboy 12-16 class as Eyota, MN’s Austin Nelson put his Yamaha out front to win both motos. Boaz finished second each time. Ahead of Wisconsin’s Chandler Turner in the first moto, and Kevin Checkmarks in moto two. The next race at Kellogg MX will be a Pro Am event with a $3,000 pro purse. May 16th organized practice 10:30-4pm and May 17th AMA/D23 Pro Am Motocross. Check out wow.motokazie.coma for more info. The results was a rutted, rough, and great track. The soil holds moisture well, so it stayed nice all day. Just another sign of the ongoing improvements, and huge investment being made to keep Motosports Park a long time favorite. Juda, Wi’s Roy Nafzger has been doing well in the Vet classes for as long as most riders can remember. Today, when +45 left the line for their first moto, he quickly established himself, taking the lead out of turn one. With another quick vet rider be-

hind him, Michael Westbrook, they immediately set the pace out front. Frank Licatro and David Genung on his KTM were in a heated battle over third right off the start as well. Westbrook pushed to get a look at Nafzger, and he did at times, but the smart Nafzger wicked it up just enough to hold on for the win after a couple more good laps. Late in the moto, Genung got the best of Licastro, to finish third as Andy Kooistra was fifth ahead of WI’s Eric Strum. In moto two, Westbrook took the lead, making Nafzger have to really work for the win. As they came to the completion of the second lap, Nafzger raced down the final hill to pass Westbrook. From there, it was all Roy going to the win. Genung put his number five KTM into third off the start, and ran ahead of Licastro to the flag for third overall. Nafzger also took the +50 class win,
after topping both motos ahead of Westbrook, Tim Boblin, and Scott Campbell. As if winning four motos wasn’t enough, Nafzger swept +40 to win six motos at day’s end. Waukesha, WI’s Boblin got out front early in the +55 first moto, and held on for the win. Coming from back a few spots, William Ziesk worked up to second late in the opening lap, then pushed Boblin, settling for runner-up at the checkered flag. Dan Dworzynski put his Yamaha across for third ahead of Orville Kline. Ziesk made up for his first moto second place finish by grabbing moto two’s win, and the overall. Boblin finished third behind Dworzynski, good enough for second overall. The Supermini 12-16 class came to the line, putting some very quick young guns on the track. With fourteen riders jumping out of the gate, it was a busy first lap as riders juggled positions. Half a lap in and DJ Gritzmacher was under big pressure from Eddie Norred and Colton Parson. As they crossed the line for the first lap, Norred had his Yamaha flying out front with Parson just a tick back. Gritzmacher was third with a bunch of fast guys still on his rear fender. As the final laps came into play, Norred had opened a little gap that grew when Parson slid out exiting a rutted corner. Brice Hansen took over second and CYCLE USA, May 2015

CYCLE USA, May 2015
Wallace had a tough moto, finishing sixth as Justin Peterson and Jake Garwood finished 4-5, making up for mid-pack first motos. After finishing his day in Open B, Star Racing Yamaha team member Sexton had this to say. “I’ve won all my motos, and got all the holeshots so it went really well. The track is fantastic. They did a great job on it, and it is getting good and rough. The new sand is really making it nice out there, and a lot of fun to race on. I’ve been training out in California, with Cooper Webb and other team members, and that has been good. I go back there in a couple weeks to finish getting ready for Loretta’s. I love the new Yamahas, and feel really comfortable.” 250C saw twenty-eight riders dive into the first turn... most of them making it out clean. Leading the pack, Jimmy Epifanio wanted to make the most of a clear track. Half way through the second lap, he had pulled a small gap on Paul Law, running in second, just holding off Cameron Poces, Steven
Minkus and Tanyon Palka. The order held until the last lap, when Poces made a slick, modestly aggressive pass in the final corner, to slip by Minkus. The second moto was wild. After an opening lap, the race was re-started, while Epifano was leading. With the restart, Poces jumped to the front, while Epifanio had to work into second through the opening laps. On the last lap, pushing Poces, the two bumped after Poces briefly stalled. Epifanio had the momentum to take a shot at winning with a lap to go. Maybe in a little to much of a hurry, he took a chance going hard into one of the next corners, went down, dropping to mid-pack. Poces went on to win, ahead of Palka and Thomas Schwieter. Minkus finished fourth. Overall winner (3-1) Poces, “I got a better start and just rode my own race. Jimmy (Epifanio) came at me there late in the moto, then fell right behind me. You can see by my blisters that it was rough out there, but a lot of fun!”
they finished with Gritzmacher in third. Tyler Gamble rode well to claim fourth ahead of Nick Harris, and Parson. Six of the top seven riders (Harris being from Hampshire, IL) coming out of Wisconsin to get some track time before their season opened up. The second moto was another exciting one. Conner Burger started out in the lead with Hansen, Gamble and Harris in tow. Everything changed by the second lap... Burger dropped back. Hansen ran into problems in the back section of the track, now around mid-pack. Out front, Norred had come from outside the top five, and was on the gas hard. Things settled down a little after all that as Norred never let up, pulling a nice lead. Gamble rode really well for second in the moto and overall. Hansen fought all the way back up to fourth, for third overall. Harris, quietly snuck in for third giving the Suzuki rider and impressive fourth overall in the fast class. Gritzmacher finished fifth on his KTM. The bar has been raised in the B classes for 2015, now that the young Chase Sexton, a National Mini Champion has moved to 250 and 450B. If Sexton spends any amount of time in his home state, he’ll be
collecting a bunch of first place trophies. Sexton led every lap of his four motos, and turned the fastest lap times of the day, even with a fast field in the A classes. Sexton’s year round racing program... and potential path to a much bigger future was on full display. Sexton was gone off the start... leaving many fast riders to put on a good show for the next spots in the twenty-two rider 250B class. By the third turn, Chad Saultz had second with Jarred Berggren, Wisconsin’s Brandon Martyniak won the 85Jr class. Andrew Truhlar and finish line. Coming down the hill before Rj Mackenzie leading the others. Coming the flag, Wallace dove into the corner from mid pack, up to six in the opening hard, bumping Berggren back, and finishlap, Anthony Wallace was on a mission. A ing third behind Saultz who had a few bike couple laps later, and he had made his way lengths on the others. to fourth behind Berggren. Third through In the second moto, Saultz claimed a fifth were in a tight battle right up to the strong second place ahead of Berggren.
In the Open C class, Andrew Gerdau pulled a nice start and led the first lap. Right there the entire time, Honda mounted Steven Minkus was pulling Tanyon Palka and Timothy Lowe in a close race. Just as the second lap began, Minkus made his move. Club 57/ MotoSport/ Rhino/Bell/ 100% backed Minkus after the moto, “I was second off the start, and knew right away where I wanted to try and make a pass. On the second lap, in the first turn area he was going wide and the inside was much faster, so it was a pretty clean pass. They did a lot of really good changes out here, and all the sand that has been added is awesome. The sand separates the riders, and makes it much deeper, and more rough... making racing just that much better.” Minkus led the rest of the race as the other rides shuffled sports behind him. Lowe moved up to third at one point, before falling, and dropping to ninth. Palka took over second mid moto, and Gerdau finished third ahead of Michael Kingstad and Isaac Mancini. The second moto was a four lap battle between Minkus, Palka, and Mancini. They ran in that order till the final lap. Mancini, “I got a good start in fifth, and got to third right away. I had a couple good lines in the deep sand in back. I was passing them on the outside. It was rough, and having good lines, even longer lines made all the difference.” Mancini made the most of the last lap, passing both Palka then Minkus to take the win. It was all about pride at that point, as the scores of both motos put Minkus on top of the podium (1-2) with Palka (2-3) second and Mancini third (5-1). In 2014, Ty Tyrrell dominated the Nuke Series Open A class, winning all but one of the races he entered. He enjoyed winning, and taking home the cash all season. When the 2015 series kicked off today, he started right where he left off last year. Eric Feuillerat pulled the first moto holeshot. Early in the first lap, Tyrrell took the lead as Feuillerat had a pack of fast guys turning up the heat right away. Logan Skaggs moved his #997 Honda into second, then Nicholas Inman advanced to third. Tyrrell opened a little gap, as Inman
50Sr rider Kayden Schultz finished fourth overall.

made Skaggs work to hold onto second. At moto’s end Feuillerat finished fourth ahead of Ryan Rowntree and Daniel Sanders. The second moto saw the same three finish in the repeat order as Rowntree moved up to fourth ahead of Sanders. Tyrrell’s two moto sweep was made even a little sweater after he pulled down both moto wins in the 250A class, ahead of Skaggs and Inman. Season openers are always cool... everyone is excited, and if you get a nice day from mother nature, even better yet. This day had it all, and with all the great racing, it will be another fun summer at Motosports Park! erfect weather welcomed the riders to the JM Racing Suspension Pro-Am at Lincoln Trail Motosports. The Bomber track was fast, rough and well-kept all day. The crew watered and worked the track throughout the day making for great racing. JM Racing’s Matt Borgic was on hand with the support truck checking all riders’ sag as well as setting up and watching his riders on the track. Pro-Am races are great to attend and watch, if you have not been to one you need to go at least watch. These riders are the next racers that will be racing the AMA pro Nationals. When you see all the racers out of the pits getting ready to watch the moto on the track you know something special is going to happen. The Open A Pro Am class had Three class winner Jace Pennington. thirty-five riders on the line lookwas the #140 of Johnny Moore (MS) out ing for points and a shot at the prize front. Yamaha riders Broc Schmelyum money that waited for them at the end of (PA) and Justin Freund (MO) were in the day. Any time that many riders hit the tow, setting a blistering pace. Moore first turn it’s exciting, and they did not looked good out front but on lap six disappoint. When the thunder passed it Schmelyum matched his pace and made

a pass for the lead. Schmelyum took the win with Moore second and Freund putting in an outstanding ride in third. Wisconsin’s Joe Dretzka finished fourth, and was the only area rider in the lead group. In the second moto Moore jumped to an early lead with Freund in second. First moto winner Schmelyum found himself in fourth at the end of the first lap behind Honda rider Blake Copeland (IL). Schmelyum worked past Copeland into third and set after the leaders. He put on a good charge but ran out of time as Moore took the win giving him the overall. Freund was second for the moto and overall while Schmelyum took third for the moto and overall. Dretzka was fifth for fourth overall. The 250A Pro Am class had thirtyeight riders and when the gate dropped it was the Yamaha of Johnny Moore out front and trucking. Kawasaki rider Jetti Pifer (VA) was second at the end of the first lap, but he was being hunted by a pack of fast guys. The first rider to pounce was Mason Eck. The Collinsville IL rider looked good and set out after Moore. The next was Justin Freund who also looked focused to head to the front.
50Sr holeshot with Caleb Bates out front.
On the third lap Eck became the hunted as Freund had caught him and made the pass for second. At the flag it was Moore with the win, Freund second and Eck third. Brady Neys (IL) finished fourth ahead of Mark Marincic (IL). The second moto had Moore leading
every lap to take the moto and overall wins. Eck finish finished second for the moto and overall. Third overall was the question. Honda rider Brady Neys was running third but where was second place in the first moto Freund? After a less than desired start Freund found himself
in eleventh at the end of the first lap. With his head down and charging but at the end of the third lap he found himself at his truck with mechanical problems. One bunch of riders dreaming of being in the ProAm class some day was the 50Sr class. In the first moto KTM rider Caleb Bates made short work of the Bomber track and took the moto win. KTM rider Tristan Dalton took second with KTM rider Oliver Kamp third. In the second moto Bates again had his orange machine on the pipe and took the win. KTM rider Jeremy Frailey finished eighth the first moto but he was up front and finished second this time. Third for the moto was Cobra rider Teegan Dowers, but with a fifth in the first moto it left him in a moto score tie with Caleb House (4-4). The tie went to Dowers with the better second moto score. After finishing second in the first moto Tristan Dalton finished fifth in the second moto leaving a moto overall score of 7 which was good enough for second overall. I hope these young riders pay attention in math so they could figure out all those scores. I have to say good job to 50JR rider Brayden Cox. The KTM rider was the

Motocross is a family sport, so after watching his son Landon Lankutis finish third overall in the 65 Open class, long time Hare Scrambles rider Lee Lankutis brought out his Hall’s Husky and jumped in the +40 class. In the first moto it was Honda rider Aaron Copeland, who also had sons racing in the ProAm class and the B classes, who took the moto win. Kawasaki rider John Dixon took second with Bret Milan third. Lankutis took his Husky to fourth. In the second moto 28

Copeland again took the win, this time ahead of Milan. Third for the moto and overall went to Dixon. Lankutis ended up in a three way tie for fourth with Eric Trigalet and Jason Straight. With the tie breaker Trigalet finished fourth the second moto taking fourth overall. After winning both motos and overalls in Schoolboy 2 and the Open B class, KTM Seven rider Jayce Pennington headed to the Schoolboy class where he met up with Big StCharles Seven Yamaha rider Joey Sapienza who won both moto wins in the 125 Two-Stroke class and traded moto wins with Preston Pennington in the Open Two-Stroke for second overall. In the first moto Jayce Pennington laid down amazing lap times taking the win with the Yamaha 125 of Sapienza screaming in tow. Yamaha rider Chase Smothers finished third. In the second moto Pennington had his KTM on the way for a clean sweep of all his motos for the day, taking the moto and overall win. Sapienza finished second ahead of Smothers. Keep your eyes open, I feel it won’t be that long and you will see both Pennington and Sapienza running in the ProAm classes. Dretzka, “For as much rain as this place had just prior to the race, the Azzie crew did a great job providing a very competitive track. The track actually got dryer than I thought it would. second set went really well. In the second Unlimited A moto, Zach Coons and I had a tight battle up front for quite a while. I could feel Skodras bring some pressure during laps 2 and 3, but Zach and I were locked and movin’, we were able to put a little space between us and third. About a lap later I was able to put a move on Zach in the back section, just before the sand. Sportland2 has always been tremendous, thanks to Tom and the crew. The 2015 Kawi is awesome, along with Enzo Suspension, it’s a great combo. Perfect weather for racing, a great track-- a classic Azzie opener!” Next up was Women’s, where Bryanne Wolf was able to get away with the holeshot in both motos. During the first half of the lap, Kaylen Pellman worked her way past Wolf for first. Pellman continued to gain a bigger lead ahead of Wolf, Madisyn Larsen, Jade Wennlund, and Tammy Flemming. Wennlund pushed ahead and took over the third place position in front of Larsen. Pellman never looked back as Wennlund charged through and took over second place in the third lap. Pellman held onto first for the finish, followed by Wennlund, Wolf, and Larsen. During moto two, Pellman was once again able to fight her way up to first. Wolf, Wennlund, and Larsen pushed themselves closely behind for most of the race. By the beginning of lap four, Wolf started to close the gap on Pellman and battled with her for first over the Plateau. It was close, but Pellman took the win. Pellman went 1/1 for the overall, fol-

As the riders neared the plateau in the first lap, Sidders was able to make his way into first, with Madison and Scheiber left to fight for second. Doeberlein was able to push into second by the third lab. Sidders managed to hold off his first place position for the rest of moto one, followed by Doeberlein and Madison. In moto two, Doeberlein claimed the holeshot, and continued in first through the opening lap, with Madison and Dalton Pergande holding second and third. Scheiber and Sidders battled behind. As lap two approached, Sidders worked into fourth, and Nate Telfer found his way into fifth. By the beginning of the third lap, Sidders and Telfer found the extra drive that helped push them into second and third. Doeberlein never let off and took the win, with Sidders, Telfer, and Madison shortly behind. Doeberlein (2/1) took the overall, with Sidders (1/2) for a second, and Telfer (4/3) third. Doeberlein, “I think the race was going good on a lot of parts of the track. By the second round of motos the track was getting a little rough, but the members always manage to work on ways to improve it. My first 250C class on the new bike went really well. I got second in the first moto, then the holeshot in second moto and kept pulling. I'd like to thank Rob’s Performance for providing me with a sponsorship and a great bike. Also Quaker Steak and Lube, Best Tile Werks, Rock River Powersports, the big riggers crew and most important my family. They stick behind me with everything I want to do.” It was an awesome day for PeeWee Jr, with Lane Rhyme getting the holeshot in both motos. In moto one, Logan Kresal managed to work his way around Rhyme during the first lap. He held onto the first place position with Rhyme, Ryder Skodras, Luca Paajanen, and Chase Blazek close behind. Once in the lead, Kresal never looked back and took the win. In moto two, Rhyme once again grabbed the holeshot this time holding the lead all the way to the end. Even with pressure from Skodras and Paajanen behind him, Rhyme still hadn’t let off. Rhyme (2/1) walked away with the overall, with Kresal (1/4) in second, and Paajanen (4/2) in third. Big Qualifier at Sunset Ridge
Thirty-three 250B Limited riders come off the gate for the first moto of the day.
Walnut, Illinois - April 11/12 Sunset Ridge MX Area Qualifier weekend
R
iders from eighteen states, plus three territories of Canada came to the first race of the 2015 season at Sunset Ridge, an Area Qualifier with perfect weather all weekend, including the practice day ran on Friday. Many were working at qualifying for Loretta Lynn’s Regional, but there were plenty of riders hitting their first event of the season, just trying to shake out the cob webbs after another long winter. Racing to the north in Wisconsin hadn’t yet begun, Minnesota was fresh into the season as well. As everything fired up Saturday morning, you couldn’t have asked for a better day. A few were wearing shorts, and at day’s end, a little sunburn wasn’t uncommon. First race out of the gate... the thirtythree rider 250B Limited class. Wisconsin’s Jamison Duclos had the far outside gate, but grabbed enough throttle around the first turn to lead everyone into the second corner. A lap later, he still had a couple bike lengths on Indiana’s Jakob Haney, Chad Saultz, Chase Evans and Brady Bill. Half way through the third lap, and Duclos was starting to gap the field as Iowa’s Evans had moved up to second. Rock River Powersports/ Cycle Trader/ Fly backed Duclos went on for the win, “I had a late gate pick, and started on the way outside, but got a good drive off the line. From there I tried to find a good rhythm,
and not tense up. I wanted to put good smooth laps, and it worked.” Evans finished second, a bit ahead of Saultz, Michigan’s Seth Green and Dalton McDonald, having made the trip all the way from Idaho. The second moto had riders changing positions with each lap. Duclos, Saultz, and Evans all took turns leading, while mixing it up with Seth Green and Ian Pistole. After more changes, when they crossed the line Evans held down Mendota, IL’s Ewan Krisch went 2-5 for third the lead ahead of overall in the thirty rider 85cc 9-11 class. 4 for fourth overall. IL’s Zack Tatar finished seventh in the second moto, but was further back in the pack in moto one. It was a fast class to say the least. The 250C Limited class was large enough to have the group split into two heats, and a last chance. All to put the riders in one forty-rider second moto. Michigan riders Trevor Pavlik and Caine Dodson topped the class ahead of Indiana’s Braden Groves. Highland Park, IL’s Maximillian Richter was the best finishing local rider, taking down eighth overall. The Women’s 16+ All Star class had some great racing, both for the win as well as through the pack. WI’s fast Kirsten Raemisch faced off with Elwood, IL’s Danielle Grigoletti for the win. In the first moto, Raemisch led the first two laps, as Grigoletti never let up. At the same time, back just a little, Michigan’s Bryce Martinez and Samantha Mandelke (IL) were having one of the closest battles of the day. As they started the third lap, Grigoletti found a line around Raemisch to take the lead. Raemisch made a few quick efforts to get back into the lead, but then Grigoletti pulled a small gap for the win. The fight over third didn’t end until the last lap when Mandelke passed Martinez just before the checkers. In the second moto, Raemisch again got the edge out of the gate over Grigoletti with Martinez leading Mandelke this time. The same two battles developed for the lead, and for third. Grigoletti came at Raemisch hard in the last lap, as they were side by side before the finish line. 125cc Yamaha mounted Grigoletti, “I started in second and the track was super rough. I was on her the entire time and went for it at the end, but she cut me off to keep the win. It was a good clean race for sure.”

#99 Kirsten Raemisch and Danielle Grigoletti had a great two moto battle in Women All-Star.
Raemisch enjoyed the close race as well, “This is my first race of the season so it felt like I was fighting the bike and all a lot - just getting back in the swing of things. At the end we were so close, I was a little aggressive, but it was for the win, and we both stayed up to finish. We were both going for it, and it was great.” Iowa’s Patrick Murphy took control of the 85cc 9-11 Limited class, leading thirtyone riders out of the first turn in moto one. Ewan Krisch (IL) was second with Cameron Jeffers and Adam Funk (IL) right on his rear fender as they finished
the first lap. As Murphy started to pull away, everyone in the top ten were tangled in close racing behind. Krisch held Jeffers off to the end, as Kaden Parmley (IN) and Lane Fiser (KY) were still dragging bars up to the final corner and jumps. Parmley got the edge for fourth.
Gavin Batson in the 65cc 7-9 class.
MX Stuff 4 U/ Bell/ Fly backed Murphy after repeating in moto two. “The start was good, it is always good when you get

ride here quite a bit.” Krisch rode really well, running in second early, then pushing Jeffers for a lap, before slipping back to fifth. Fiser and Colin Marler finished 3-4 in the moto. Krisch’s 2-5 was good for third overall. The fastest riders of the day came out in the 450A class, fifteen of them from seven states. Geico Honda’s pro from Minnesota, Christian Craig led from start to finish. Craig, “I had a pretty good start. I got pinched a little off the gate but held it on through the first turns and came out in first. It was good riding with some of these younger kids as they have plenty of energy. The track is awesome. I came down for the weekend to ride and have some fun, and what more could you ask for. The conditions are perfect.” Jacob Williamson (MI) ran in second much of the moto, before the non-stop efforts by Oklahoma’s Chase Marquier and IN’s Josh Osby dropped him to fourth. MN’s Henry Miller charged hard to finish fifth ahead of Ty Tyrrell and Logan Skaggs. Craig took the lead away from Osby in the second lap of moto two, then went on for a comfortable win.

D23 MX Season Opener
Open A riders off the line.

he weatherman had threatened rain all week, 70% then 60% and finally on race day 50% after 4 PM. Dale Kadlec had the track in perfect condition after a busy, warm and sunny practice day on Saturday. And, the forecast left him with a sunny and mid 60’s day to run D23’s first MX event of the season. The season opener had an excellent rider turnout with nearly 250 entries. Clay Olson of PDR Performance was on hand with fresh rubber and anything else the riders and mechanics might need to get through the day. The multi class winners included Drew Slocum, Josh Boaz, and Gavin Kadlec. The 250C class was loaded with twenty-nine riders, and had Drew Slocum lined up on the far outside, trying to pull a holeshot and he almost got it, going around the corner in second, but finishing 1-1 for the overall and then 2-1 for the overall in Open C.
Boaz came to the gate his normal happy self, then put on his game face and got the job done from the drop of the gate to the checked flag, going 1-1 in both the 85 12-15 and the Supermini classes. Kadlec’s off season conditioning paid off as he fended off the 250A and Open A riders, while going 1-1 in both classes for the overalls. Cole Felland gets a shout out for staying close, and keeping Kadlec honest. Of note; Tim Walker put the +45B/C guys on notice with a Track guro, Dale Kadlec. strong 1-1 ride for that overall, Results: 50cc 4-6 Premix: 1.Mac Nornberg 2.Ashton while Emmalee Otterdahl moved up to Thomas 3.Cody Bohlman the girls 9-12 class this year and went 150cc 7-8 Premix: 1.Tanner Schlegel 2.Brady Karolevitz 3.Griffin Disse 4.Hayden Schwochert1 as class winner. Strauss shines at Sugar Maple Hill Point, Wisconsin April 19 By Dave Hollub

ason Erdmann had Sugar Maple MX all prepped and ready for a weekend of riding and racing, but the weatherman was determined to mess it up by predicting rain on Sunday. Over 100 riders came out on Saturday to get ready to race but Saturday. Rain was not expected until late Sunday afternoon but many riders pulled out and went home. Sunday morning dawned a bit cool and overcast but the track was prepped to perfection and racing began for the 170 entries that came out. The 50cc Senior class got the first gate drop of the season and Ayden Price was out front at the first tunnel jump. Price had Nolan Schweighardt right on his rear wheel and a couple bike lengths back Brad Ottenad was busy defending against Owen Blakey. Price stayed out front all moto despite pressure from Schweighardt. By the time lap one was scored Blakey had Taylor Strauss (529) and Colton slipped past Ottenad and soon Bentz (327) battled in Open and 250B. Ottenad lost another position to what he could to hold off Troy Blakey. hard charging Kaiden Snyder. There was a three way battle for third the rest of the moto between Lucht, Kenefick, and Persha. Strauss was able to get past Bentz just before the Ski Jump on lap three and went on to hold the lead to the finish. Kenefick and Persha got around Lucht and then began battling as the white flag came out. After changing positions a couple times on the final lap, Persha saw an opening going through the rollers and took over third for good. Strauss took the overall with his 2/1 finishes while Bentz (1/2) was second and Persha (3/3) took third. Strauss on his day, “It was a good day with three overalls. I got five moto wins. In 250B, once I was out front it turned out to be a good finish. I also won Sportsman and Open B. I got all four of those holeshots and moto wins. It really was a good day. The track was great, Jason did a awesome job watering and prepping it so it stayed really nice. I CYCLE USA, May 2015

Cody Gamble went 3/3 on the day to claim third overall. Dylan Knoch and Kevin Gollubske battled both motos for fourth, with Gollubske holding off Knoch’s push in moto one. In moto two Knoch got the edge at the start and despite pressure from Gollubske, held on the rest of the moto. With the largest gate of the day, 250C also provided some of the toughest fought battles. Seth Doeberlein was out front in the first moto with Cody Graham was right on his rear fender. Ezra Graumann was in third with Connor Blaschke and Dalton Pergrande pushing hard behind him. By the time the first lap was scored Graham was out front. He and Doeberlein held their spots to the finish as they distanced themselves from the rest of the field. Pergrande moved up into third in the west section before lap two was over. Zachary Scheiber worked his way up from a mid pack start to challenge Pergrande, finally making a pass
Devin Denman finished third overall in Open C.

into third in the rollers on lap three. Doeberlein was again out front at the start of moto two but Cj Flancher took over the lead in the rhythm section by the road. Graham got by Doeberlein as they hit Jump #9 only to have Doeberlein get back by him. Graham wasn’t finished yet, and by the time they came out of Hollub’s Hollow he was out front, only to end his day mid lap when he went down hard. As the moto went on Doeberlein began pressuring Flancher for the lead, taking it away on lap four. Doeberlein got the overall win with his 2/1 finishes while Scheiber made a last lap charge to get past Flancher before the checkers to claim second for the moto and overall. When the Women hit the track Alisha Zwicky was out front with Kaitlynn Pfaff, Angel Ennis, and Jen-
nifer Eng in the next three spots. Eng made up for a poor start by charging through the class and taking the lead in the scoring area at the end of lap one. Ennis moved into second ahead of Zwicky and Pfaff by the time they hit the Daytona corner on lap two. Andi Bow-
man started near the back of the class, but midway through lap two she began a charge to the front after picking off Pfaff, Zwicky, and then Ennis early on lap four. Now Bowman had open track ahead of her as she started closing in on Eng. By the time the white flag came out Eng heard Bowman closing in and stepped up her pace enough to hold on for the moto win. Pfaff was out front at the holeshot in moto two with Jersey Graumann and then Eng close behind. Eng was out front before lap one was in the books and Bowman had worked her way into second. Bowman stayed close enough to Eng that she was ready to take advantage of any mistake. Eng rode hard and never gave Bowman an opening. Eng’s 1/1 day earned her Nolan Schweighardt (11) and Ayden Price battle in 50Sr. first ever overall win.

Bowman turned her 2/2 day into a second overall while Ennis moved into third before the moto ended to claim the final podium spot. Eng, “This is my first overall. First moto I didn’t let the clutch out enough to get the holeshot or anywhere close to it so I started out last, but I was able to work my way up to the lead. I did better on the second moto gatedrop. By the time we hit the triple I had moved up a couple positions so I was third at the next corner. I got out front pretty fast after that and held first to the end. Bowman was pushing me pretty hard both motos, she was right behind me and I didn’t let off. This was my first day on a 125 ever, I went down in practice and bent my radiators up so Matthew Mowery let me use his 125 to race. Thanks again Matthew for letting me use your bike, and my dad for always supporting me.” Once again Jason Erdmann beat the weatherman’s predictions and pulled off a great day of racing. The overcast skies and cool temperature helped the dirt stay moist and soft while building up incredible ruts in every corner. All the racers put in a great day of racing, and the common thought in the pits was that the people that decided to stay home missed a perfect track. Hopefully we will get to see more of you at the next race. Thank you to everyone that came out.
