It almost the end of April as I write this and we have not been able to get one event run. We will all remember 2018 as the year of the never ending winter. Feld moved the Minneapolis SX to a later date than last year hoping it would be warmer for the racers and mechanics. That ended up with the opposite effect and in the middle of the worst blizzard of the winter. The number of empty seats due to weather was a real bummer, most of them had been sold. Way too many people were not able to use the tickets they purchased due to the conditions. It was a bummer for those that didn’t get to attend and watch our hometown hero race to a decisive victory. The #6 Jeremy Martin took his second consecutive SX victory, while #48 Henry Miller of Rochester won the 450 LCQ and picked up some more valuable points in the main. With a little luck we will be able to go racing by the April 29th, we have two motos and a Hare Scrambles on the schedule for the last Sunday in April. You’ll know by the time you read this how that worked out. In other district business, we will have a commemorative 50th Anniversary package for every member ready to go in June or July. The black card that was mailed to every member along with their district card can be turned in at events in exchange for your items. You will need that black card in order to claim your package. We have special stickers, pins, soft tie downs and medical info helmet tag for all of our members. We’re still looking at 50th anniversary year-end awards. Remember that the MX promoters have also started the regional series. That series will count a racer’s best six finishes within one of the three regions and offer awards to the top three in each class.

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... Don’t forget that there will be a Pro Hillclimb in August followed by an amateur event the next day, this should make for a really fun weekend. We also have several trail rides on the calendar that are always great. Lets just hope “Mother Nature” cooperates for the rest of the season. I hope to see all of you at an event or on the trails and roads of D23 this summer. Mike

War of the Twins Flat Track Indoors at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds

#17 Josh Samuelson scored the win in the Amateur Hooligan main event.

St Paul, Minnesota - March 23 By Tim McBride

T

he Minnesota flat track community saw a welcomed resurgence of Indoor racing action when former AMA National #77 and long-time Minneapolis Armory racer Peter Hook and a group of hard working volunteers played host to the AMA sanctioned War of the Twins Indoor Flat Track event held in conjunction with the Donny Smith Bike Show at the historic Lee and Rose Warner Coliseum located at the Minnesota State fairgrounds. The venue saw a capacity crowd entertained by a very well-orchestrated display of controlled chaos featuring plenty of thrills and spills as competitors did battle on the concrete surface, which was lightly sprinkled with coke syrup to provide the much needed traction. During a halftime break in the action, and in memory of the winter indoor racing hey days in the 1970’s held in the winter months, several past competitors that were on hand spectating were called

to the infield and honored for their years of bar-banging service. Most notable among them was legendary Minnesota racer Buzz Arndt. Arndt was awarded a special plaque and a large banner commemorating his decades of competition.

The banner was hung in the concession area and signed by several friends and former competitors. As far as the racing action went it turned out to be a successful day for a pair of contenders in the form of the father/ son team of Clint and Corbin Erickson from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Clint, a top competitor in the American Flat Track series scored a heavily contested win in the Vintage main, narrowly ahead of Eric Moldenhauer and JJ Flairty. His twelve year old son Corbin Erickson nabbed the win in a crash infested Open Amateur main event ahead of Rich Delak and Wes Orloff. 2017 Minneapolis X-Games Hooligan class gold medalist and Fuel CafĂŠ 5th St. sponsored JJ Flairty came all the way from Waukesha, Wisconsin to top the popular Pro Hooligan main event. The 200cc Mad Dog main event thunders off the line, #52 Adam Popp scored the eventual win.

Fisher and Louie Lanters rounded out the podium. Mac McGrew was in contention until he crashed his Lee Cycles 900cc Harley Davidson in the waning laps. McGrew returned in an impromptu Pro Twin Dash for Cash to narrowly defeat Flairty aboard his immaculate RS 750, built and tuned by his father Mark at MC3 Racing. An exciting Expert Singles main event was won by the Go-Moto entry of Jake Mataya who was riding memory of his fallen friend and teammate Charlotte Kainz. While aboard her 35L numbered 450 Honda, Mataya was the class of the field throughout the program. Jake’s brother Nick Mataya finished second in the main event with Cole Anderson and the rest of the ten rider field in tow. The always popular Maddog class was won by Adam Popp. The top five finishers of the ten rider field were Popp, Ryan Schmidt, Mac McGrew, Trisha Dahl and Bob Boyd. Easter Sunday at LTM win. KTM rider Brad Adams made his first trip to LTM and it paid off with second ahead of Yamaha riders Donald Short and Jeff Martin. Chris Navel finished fifth. Brian Enochs, while charging hard after Navel went down taking himself out of the moto. In the second moto Daugherty didn’t get the same start but he wasted no time getting to the front. Adams again had a strong moto taking second. Short finished third, and Martin fourth. In Open A, Michael Norris put down the fastest times of the day. Norris owned the first moto and looked like he didn’t want to share his eggs from his basket. Garrels Honda rider Lucas Garrels finished second with Bryce Cox third. Norris repeated in moto two as Garrels had issues off the start and KTM

Casey, Illinois - April 1 By James and Rollanda Pinckard

L

incoln Trail Motosports hosted their third District 17 race and Round 2 of the Fly Showdown series with perfect 70 degrees weather April Fools! This Easter Sunday was again a weather challenge for the LTM crew. All week it looked like it was going to be horrible for the weekend with rain and snow. The crew made a decision to change from the Bomber to the Classic track which proved to be a great choice. Saturday was cold but good for riding. Even with the not-perfect weather LTM had Easter egg hunts for all who wanted to join in. Sunday, the track was perfect! The riders who chose not to come missed out on a great event. LTM ran a quick program and it was a good thing because most of the riders drove through snow on the way home. Welcome to spring in Illinois. In the 30B class long time LTM rider Aaron Carter wouldn’t miss the chance 10

CYCLE USA, May 2018

to race the Classic track no matter what the weather. Carter showed his love for the track and took both moto wins. Honda rider Steven Sipe and Husky rider Joe Pitts squared off in a battle for second. Sipe topped Pitts in both motos giving him second overall. The +40 classes have been fast this year. In +40A KTM rider Alex Ewing was on a rail around the track. Though not without issues of his own this Easter day, he took both moto wins ahead of Yamaha rider Harry Friedman. The third place rider in both motos was Michael Berkemeier. In the 40B class KTM rider Cory Daugherty was on the gas. In the first moto he pulled a great holeshot and put in solid laps to take the

rider Cox was on the gas. Cox was flying and wasn’t going to back off. Garrels charged hard but ran out of time while Cox crossed the line giving him second overall. The Open B riders gave us the best racing of the day. In the first moto KTM rider Conner Burger took the moto win with Husky rider Jason Gepford second on his new 450. Bodhi Parsons finished third with Dillon Cantrell fouth ahead of Kyle Campbell. In the second moto things got wild - this is a class very even in talent. Cantrell went to the front taking the moto win. Burger finished second, leading Parsons, Gepford and Campell across the line. When the scores shook out Burger took first overall with Cantrell second. Parsons and Gepford tied on points with Parsons finishing ahead overall. These two also traded moto scores in the 250B class with Parsons again coming out on top. In the 14-24 class the players from the B class fights were back at the line… gloves off. Well, maybe if it was warmer the gloves would have been off, but the gas was on. In the first moto Yamaha rider Dillon Cantrell came out swinging

and took the win. Yamaha rider Bodhi Parsons and Jason Gepford were again locked in a fight with Parsons besting Gepford. In the second moto and battle for King of the Hill, Cantrell came out standing on top, taking the moto and overall win. Gepford finally had things go his way taking second for the moto and overall as Campbell finished third. The 50Jr class, even though it had the smallest riders, it delivered one of the biggest battles of the day. In the first moto Cobra rider Owen Shull took the win as Cooper Levin was second with Tyler Franklin third. Fourth went to the first non-Cobra rider,

KTM rider Reid East. Fifth was Lincoln Paxton on his KTM. In the second moto Franklin had his Cobra cranking to take the moto win as well as the overall. Reid East was trucking his way into second. Levin finished third for the moto giving him second overall, taking the tie breaker over Shull who finished fourth. The Women’s class provided some excitement as well. The class keeps getting new riders and fans, with nine entries at the gate and signs along the track. KTM rider Amanda Sharp flew to the front of the first moto. Hanna Sipe quickly placed herself in second and was running free of any pressure all the way. The battles came behind them from Hanna Krockenberger and Danni Troup. Early on Troup was running third but Krockenberger got by. She couldn’t shake Troup who was going faster than I have ever seen her ride. Coming into the famous bowl turn Troup got some head shake and went down HARD, taking her out of the race. Krockenberger went on the take third in the moto ahead of Jacy Turpin. Another battle on the track was for fifth. Kawasaki rider Rollanda Pinckard had the spot but got passed by

Turpin then Honda rider Isabelle Duckwall, who is the older sister of Sipe, and in her very first race. She made a move past but fell in a rut in the very next turn. Pinckard put her head down and finished fifth. When the crew made their way to the gate for the second moto Troup was headed to the line with a repaired Kawasaki and an attitude. She is the Weston Peick of the class. Bruised and battered this girl is tough. When the gate dropped it was again Sharp out front taking the win. Sipe again took second as Krockenberger finished third. Peick, I mean Danni Troup, finished fourth for the moto. Turpin finished fifth as Pinckard finished sixth after some barbanging with Turpin, for a well-deserved fifth overall and was very proud of her cool spark plug trophy. Mauston, D16 Trials Opener Mauston, Wisconsin - April 22 By Kevin Huber

T

he Wisconsin Observed Trials Association had scheduled their first District 16 event of the 2018 season for April 15th. This event is on Noel Smage’s land near Mauston, Wisconsin. The Thursday before the event the weather forecast was for a tenth of an inch of ice and three inches snow the night before with snow the whole day of the event. The Trialsmaster Noel Smage, AMA D16 Trials Referee Kevin Huber and WOTA President Shari Huber made the call to delay the event one week to April 22nd. Around eight inches of snow fell that weekend and covered most of the ribbons and arrows set for the contest. Some of the snow melted early in the next week, but Wednesday another six inches fell. Warm weather was predicted, so the thought was it would all melt. By Saturday morning, only part of it had melted, so Noel and Kevin spent the day shoveling snow in the sections. A lot of snow melted Saturday, and where it had been shoveled the ground had a chance to dry out. By contest time

Jamison Stachel won the Advanced class

Intermediate rider Travis Lange

Sunday the course was in excellent condition, with only a little snow showing. Everyone must have had the itch to ride because the weather didn’t keep them

away. There were riders from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. There was also a lot of spectators. Some of them were watching for the first time because they were thinking about entering the sport. They asked a lot of questions and were impressed with the event. They followed the riders around the seven section loop that each contestant rode three times. They got to see the Champ Class climb rock ledges that defied gravity. They were also able to watch the lower classes go over smaller rocks and logs. Even the beginner class of riders that had to maneuver the tight turns and sandy hills were interesting to watch. Anyone that wants to enter a contest was able to choose a class that would fit their abilities. It’s great to see interest in Trials growing. Roselawn Hare Scrambles District 17 Double header... Roselawn, Illinois - April 14/15 By Austin and BriAnn Wells

I

t wouldn’t be the same without some rain during the Roselawn, Indiana double-header weekend of WFO/ District 17 hare scrambles. Once again Charlie Deutscher and his crew laid out two different trails, each being almost six miles long in order to race on different loops each day at the Sun Aura Resort. The properties’ soil composition consists of dark black dirt with some sand mixture which makes for a convenient combination if any rain is in the forecast. With the last couple years being extremely wet, the track crew has laid out excellent courses of single-track that would be great in any conditions. With gloomy skies, chilly breeze and rain in the forecast for Saturday, 130 racers geared up not knowing whether to use tear-offs or roll-off goggles as they went to the starting line. In the Women’s class, the #400 of Missy Norton took the holeshot followed closely into the woods by the #410 Husqvarna of Riley Walters. On the first lap of the forty-five-minute race, Norton found herself caught with a tough decision whether to follow a slower racer from another class through a mudhole or make her own line. Norton, “When I came up to the mudhole I decided to go around the smaller bike because the line I chose didn’t look that bad, but as soon and I started to go into it my front end dipped into a hole and it about through me over the handlebars.” With Norton stuck, Walters moved into the lead, now followed by the Ashley Hall. With slick logs to cross and a leafy ground not knowing what is under them it made for a very cautious mind set. The checkered flag came out and Walters took the win followed closely by Hall and then Nikki Dixon in third place. Norton dug herself out of the mud to finish fourth. The 65-beginner class had six bikes leave the starting line as Austin Burns took the holeshot followed by Kade Heil16

day. The same soil conditions made it challenging for these racers as their small tires soared through the sandy hills and

between the trees. The checkered flag came out for with the order holding out front as Burns grabbed the win. Cody Barnes took the AA class win by almost six minutes aboard his MCS Racing Yamaha. Local boy and recently retired GNCC pro rider Chris Bach finished second with Adam Bonneur in third. James Adkisson won the Open B class ahead of Keegan Minnaert and Kevin Halloran. Heavy storms overnight and Sunday morning caused the WFO crew to delay the races by a couple hours in hopes the rain to stop. Luckily it did as the 85s, Superminis and Women were headed to the starting line to start day two. In the 85cc class Kyle Walker from Geneseo, IL did more laps than anyone else in the morn-

ing mini race, giving him the overall. Jhak Walker and Cameron Walker finished 2-3, creating an all-Walker podium! Indiana kid Riley Burton took the Supermini win. Three out of the five 50cc 4-6 class riders were girls! Wyatt Johnson won the class with Owen Gomez finishing second, followed by Cassie Fairfield, Kayten Toal and Lyric Toal. Its good to see girls get into the sport! Austin Burns took day two of the 65cc Beginner class with Jackson Piecha and Kade Heilman back just a bit. Lake Plowman took the 200C class win by 3.5 minutes over Elijah Berryman. Alex Grunder finished third. The AA class on day two was topped by Cody Barnes once again. Colten Zuidema rode much more like himself on the second day to finish second overall as Adam Bonneur grabbed third. TJ Nees brought home two wins in the Open A class this weekend.

Despite cold, Joliet gets their first 2018 MX off Joliet, Illinois - April 8 By James and Rollanda Pinckard

S

o far this season District 17 motocross racing has been a bit more of an extended winter racing series. Cold weather forced Joliet MX to cancel round one of the night series, so the focus turned to Sunday at the outdoor MX track. With it being very cold overnight it was a guess how the Sunday event would be - but it was GREAT!! Yes, it was a cold morning but the sun came out, the wind was calm and the track was perfect. Whether you’re a little dude in the Wobbler class or a Pro racer there’s a class and place for every rider at Joliet.

Seth Johnson in the 50cc Injected class.

Nice to see Spring return, and riders at the gate.

“Quads to the line” isn’t something you hear often now days. At Joliet there’s a class for you if you have a quad. Today Ryan Dasssow took the Quad B win. Yamaha riders Jonathan Wood and Calvin Smith went at it in the C class before Wood took both moto wins. Lucus Wood took the win in the Mini Quad while Chase Dorsey won 300 Mini Quad. The 50cc Oil Injected class is for riders 4-8 years old. It has riders of all sizes

and abilities, most of all provides a fun safe time to race for the youngest of riders. In the first moto KTM rider Lincoln Paxton was running strong and took the win. KTM riders Bentley Immormino and Brason Jern battled with Jern taking second. Green Yamaha rider Seth Johnson took his PW to a fun fourth. In the second moto Paxton seemed to like that first place spot and took another win. The battle between Immormino and Jern

Mike Abt getting ready for +60, where he won both motos.

was again in full swing. This time Immormino took second and it was enough for second overall. Jern finished third with Johnson again fourth. The 85 classes are fast today! It’s unreal the speed these riders can achieve. In 85Jr Husky rider Peter Parenti was fired up and took the first moto win with KTM rider Christopher Colantoni second and Kyla Pogliano third. In the second moto Parenti delivered another strong ride to win. Colantoni finished second as Pogliano crossed in third. Pogliano could have been tired from working her pit business (Git Sidewayz) selling VP race

gas with her sister, learning about business and sales and saving profit for college. In 85Sr Kawasaki rider Brandon Bollino was fast. In the first moto he took the win over Joey Promenschenkel and KTM rider Isaih Ortiz, then repeated it in moto two. The +60 class had Countryside Husqvarna’s Mike Abt all smiles all through the day. Winning both motos of his motos surely helped. Plus he seems to just love riding, racing and hanging out at the track. Cold or not, racing in the 250C class

was hot. In the first moto two stroke 250 Husky rider TJ Lowe was smoking as he took off for the win. That’s not what made the racing hot but the fact there was a six-way tie for second in the results after the second moto. Second the first moto went to Yamaha rider J C Hoyt after a great battle in the pack. KTM rider Austin Plunk took third with Dan Mormino fourth. Nolyn Thompson was fifth with Dylan Daugherty sixth. ahead of Jaden Pogliano. At the start of the second moto Austin Plunk had a good start on the outside but clipped the outside of a jump coming into the track and flipped his bike into the other riders. This caused a huge mix up in the class. Plunk who finished third couldn’t finish the race. Riders were making moves all over the place. Lowe had his place picked out taking his second win. Behind him is where things got crazy in the end. Each rider had combined moto score of eight. First time C rider Daugherty finished the moto second, combined with his sixth in the first moto he still managed second overall. Third for the moto was Thompson and with his 3-5 was good for third overall. Fourth for the moto and overall went to Mormino.

‘18 Enduro Season has arrived Roselawn, Indiana - April 21/22 By Austin Wells

A

s per usual, the enduro season opener for District 14, 16, 17 and IERA was put on by Jeff Fredette and the Grand Kankakee Trail Riders in Roselawn, Indiana. Rain the weekend prior to the event created great conditions. Mother Nature also brought perfect riding temperatures - in the 60s over the weekend. On Saturday, the GKTR club put on the first round of the Family Enduro Series, the Sand Booger Family Enduro. There was a sandy, tight, 10.5 mile loop set up for the 286 riders that came to dust off the boots after a long, cold winter. Family enduros have classes to accommodate everyone from four year old kids to pro riders. The club also provides a small educational session during the rider’s meeting that explains what the different check-

points are and other aspects of enduro racing. For Sunday, the rider count jumped up to 302 entries with 200+ being pre-en-

tries! Five special tests ran across 18+ different landowners’ property to cover 60 plus ground miles. In the fastest class of the day, Hall’s Cycles’ Tyler Vore took

Dirt Track - Indoors! District 23/16 Season Opener is a big hit New Richmond, Wisconsin, April 21-22 By Tim McBride

T

he future of flat track is looking bright as the Shadow Valley Drifters promoted the 2018 season opener at the Cedar Lake Arena located in New Richmond, WI. The District 23/ 16 double header saw record breaking rider attendance. 298 entrants arrived on Saturday representing five states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana and South Dakota. Sunday saw 233 entries. The venue also saw a new TT track for the Quad riders featuring an option lane to enhance passing opportunities for those who dared. As one might guess, corralling that many riders into an indoor arena and running the event would seem like a logistical nightmare. Bobbi Jo Denver and Colin Hastings from the Shadow Valley Drifters along with fellow members were up for the task and all deserve a tip of the hat. They include, track builder Jordan Schlosser, Paul and Barb Anderson, Justin Berhow, Andrew Hook, Gary Braun, Tanner Olchefske, Connor Olson and Scotty Young. Bobbi Jo Denver explained their dedication to the sport of flat track racing, “Colin and I have two kids that race. We went to our first flat track race four years ago and we were hooked! We started promoting a year later and we don’t plan on stopping!” Some of the highlights of the racing action included top AFT Singles contender Parker Lange from Campbellsport WI, as the man to beat in the Pro bike division. Lange crashed on the last lap while leading the Open Pro main by a bunch on Saturday, after running over some sand dragged onto the groove by a fallen rider. However Lange totally redeemed himself by winning his remaining three Pro classes on the weekend against some tough competition. “We

had to get some seat time on the new bike before the upcoming AFT National in Texas," he explained. "The track was hard to pass on this time so I knew I had to get good starts to be up front. I can’t do it without all the people helping me out!” The Pro Quad class was also a tough nut to crack, if you wanted to win. On Saturday Daryl Rath topped the Pro-Am main event with teammate Brock Zychowski in tow. The Expert class saw a fast starting Blaine Stegenga score the win and for a while it looked like Zychowski would finish second again until he crashed spectacularly on the front strait heading into the infield. Rath seized the opportunity and finished in the runner-up spot with Dylon Waldvogel in third.

On Sunday, Zychowski rebounded and topped both divisions. “We were excited to get back on the bike to kick off the 2018 season,” the Rath Racing sponsored Zychowski explained. “Friday’s practice session allowed us to make some suspension changes to accommodate the track. The first main event on Saturday I took second behind my teammate. The second main I was running in second until I made the move and ended up catching the groove which sent me rolling. On Sunday my Hoosier tires were hooking up awesome off the line and in the first main we scored the win. The second main Daryl and I were battling for the lead until I found an awesome line on the inside option lane to extend my lead for the win.” CYCLE USA, May 2018

Fantastic Sunset Opener The Sunset Ridge MX opener saw a great crowd, perfect weather and fast racing all day Walnut Illinois - April 22 Sunset Ridge MX

Kallin Thomas going to fifth in the 85cc 9-11 class.

F

or sure, the upper midwest has had a rocky start to racing this Spring. If you live in the northern part of our readership area - you would likely call it plain crap as shoveling up to two feet of wet snow deserves that definition. This said, finally things are getting better and the warmth we’ve all been waiting for is arriving. The drastic improvement arrived just in time for Sunset Ridge’s opening race weekend in Walnut, Illinois. The Saturday practice saw close to 200 riders and Sunday’s race had over 300 entries -with temps climbing into the mid 60’s. Track conditions were absolutely perfect, and kept that way all day with very little work except for some well done watering between motos. As far as openers go, this was a really good one. Actually, perfect. Mother Nature did her part and the Sunset Ridge crew came through as they always do. Riders from four states filled the rouster, plenty from Wisconsin and Minnesota making the easy trip to get away from

remnants of the prior weekend’s big snow storm.

#125 Austin Cobb with his buddies after scoring his first ever overall at Sunset Ridge. He won in the thirty-two rider Open C class. Cole Watkins #128 finished third and Benjamin Atkins went 9-7 for eighth overall.

Racing was as exciting as the track and weather was good. Sterling, IL’s Joey Fortune had the hot hand off the gate for the first moto of the day, filled with twenty-nine 250C riders. It took almost a full lap for the juggling in the front of half of the pack to settle down. Fortune still led as Tanner Henson had his KTM on rails, working up to second after edging out Gunner Schmidgall. By the third lap Henson was out front with Fortune holding down second. Those two held on to the end as Luke Jackson fought his way into third with Samuel Hammelman and Schmidgall filling out the top five. The battles behind this group continued to the checkered flag making it a wide open fun moto for everyone involved. In the second moto it was all Henson leading. to work hard, stay smooth and on the gas to get to the front for the win. This time was much better with a good start. It was so much easier just being out front right away. The track is really good, but getting rough quick.” Fortune dropped into second right away and stayed there, putting a little gap on what became a good battle for third. Joe Quest didn’t finish moto one but quickly made a statement this time out, putting the pressure on and eventually making a pass stick on Wheeler Carmichael who finished eighth in his first moto. Luke Jackson put in consistent motos with his 3-6 still earning him third overall! Two Illinois riders, Nicholas Crecan and Wyatt Fink put on a good show in the 300cc Quad class. Crecan grabbed the holeshot in moto one with Fink eating his roost right away. Fink kept pushing and made it two wide through multiple corners and jump sections on each of the first four laps. Crecan looked to be in trouble a couple times but then dug deep and pulled back into the lead each time. Crecan finally could catch his breath after the checkered flag came out and he took the win. In the second moto, it was a “little” easier for Crecan as he had a few quad lengths on Fink to the end for his second win of the day. Chase Dorsey went 3-3 ahead of Bonfield, IL’s Lucas Wood. Oglesby, IL’s Hunter Savage made scoring the 65cc 10-11 class easy as he jumped to the lead right out of turn one and then led all the way to the checkered flag in both motos. The young KTM rider was kept honest by Tristan Dalton who finished second. Finishing 3-4-5 in both motos, Nathan Bierbom topped Levi Friedrich and Tucker Stambaugh. The 65cc 7-9 group also saw a two moto winner as William Tucker made his way to the front 36

early in the opening laps of both motos. From there, staying just far enough ahead of Jaxson Schiller helped him earn the overall in the thirteen rider class. Iowa’s Lucas Yerington got the best of Gunner Heikkila in moto one after the two were close all race. In moto two, Heikkila got the better start and took full advantage to finish third in the moto and overall. Joseph Buskirk rode to fifth (5-5). The Vet classes had a good turnout across the board today. In +30B/C, fifteen riders left the gate for their first moto with Chicago’s Scott Kooistra leading them all on his Honda. As they hit mid track, Mike Goskusky was in second on his Yamaha ahead of Savage, MN’s Anthony Gardner, Gregg Wiersema and Brian Kooistra. The order held for a cou-

ple laps before Goskusky stalled and Gardner slipped into second. In the last lap, Joshua Denault worked past Brian Kooistra for fifth and Jarod Dunne took over sixth. In moto two Scott Kooistra again took control right away to score his second win in the class. Goskusky held second early, then slipped back a few spots only to recover nicely for a second place finish... after plenty of effort to beat out Gardner and Brian Kooistra. Scott Kooistra after the second moto, “This and the first moto both went well as I got good starts. This time the track was much rougher so I really tried to ride smart. I just kept a nice pace and I’m still really tired (saying it with a big smile). It has been a very good and fun day.”

#585 Ethan Glidewell and Brent Barding battle in Open C with #77 Wade Piltaver in the background.

Eyota, MN’s Trevin Nelson made the trip south well worth it. While his local tracks were still covered with snow, he found the perfect conditions here to his liking. In 85cc 1215, Nelson rounded the first turn in second behind Wisconsin’s Isaac Therrien. The pace was fast right away as Therrien tried to push his KTM away from the others. Nelson was having none of it and put his Kawasaki into the lead a third of a lap later. Before they crossed the line to finish the opening lap, another Wisconsin rider, Justin Oehlhof took over second. These three set a blistering pace to the end with Nelson opening a bit of a lead by the half way point. Gavin Templen spent much of the moto working on Conner Thompson before taking over fourth for good. The two had a great race ahead of Brock Nowicki who

crossed in sixth. The second moto finishing order was set shortly after the start, with the top five the same as it was in moto one. Plainview Powersports/ Mika/ Scott/ Bell backed race winner Nelson, “It has been a lot of fun today and the track is really great. I’ve had some great starts and even in the Schoolboy class where I was with bigger bikes I had a lot of fun racing with all of them (finished 4-2 there). We still have snow on the ground back in Minnesota so it was great coming down here. This is a great track with some really good jumps and everything you want.” Ayden Price of Fall River, WI swept both motos in the 85cc 911 group. Hunter Savage was right there to the end (2-2) ahead of Christopher Colantoni, William Tucker and Kallin Thomas.

Jack Snook rode to fourth place on the PeeWee track in his 50cc 4-8 class.

Wisconsin’s Ben Berger won the Quad B class.

Minnesota’s Wyatt Niedfeldt grabbed the 50cc 7-8 first moto holeshot ahead of Matthew Alshouse and Jax Ellul. Once out front, these three spaced out and held on to the finish. The order in moto two did a flip-flop as early race leader Niedfeldt ran into problems in the back section of the track, dropping to third place. Ellul gladly took over and went on for the win ahead of Alshouse. With the final scores of the top three all combining to four, the second moto determined the overall, and Ellul’s 3-1 took home the big first place trophy! Open C was the day’s largest class with thirty-two riders. The large group delivered two motos of excitement and close racing, all through the pack. Consistency played out in a big way when it was all done and said. In moto one Timothy Lowe took over and never looked back to grab the win. Running in second, Yamaha mounted Austin Cobb got pushed hard early, then cranked it up enough to build a margin on Joseph Rakowski, who fell into quite a battle with Daniel Mormino. By mid 38

moto Mormino had taken over third and it was Rakowski’s turn to make Mormino play defense. The two finished about a bike length apart. Wisconsin’s Jake Luchini finished fifth, just ahead of Cole Watkins and Joshua Warner. In the second moto, earlier winner Lowe wasn’t running after troubles in another class. This left the door open for the overall, and Cobb knew it right away off the start. Cobb, “I did pretty well in the first moto, getting up to second but I couldn’t catch the leader.

This time I had the holeshot and held the lead most of the way. I’m not sure where that Honda rider came from but he passed me on the last lap to get the win. I had my buddy Cole Watkins pushing me all moto. We train together so having the race with him was great and it was the first time I really had a chance out front since I broke my wrist last season. This is my first time ever getting an overall here at Sunset so it’s really cool. Bob and Jan (Pistole) deserve props for how this day went. It was beautiful today and the crew did an outstanding job on the track and everything as always.” Cobb’s 2-2 motos were plenty good for the overall. Second moto winner Joshua Warner made his last lap count as he came from third to make that winning pass just before the finish line. His 7-1 earned him second overall ahead of Watkins (6-3) and Rakowski (4-5). In Open B, Eddie Norred grabbed the holeshot and looked really strong out front Another fast guy, Cole Burger was in second before the first lap concluded. Those two really set a fast pace while Iowa’s Cole Prichard held third. Late in

the moto Norred ran into problems out of our sight and Burger took over the lead. Norred finished second, but didn’t return for moto two. Another Iowa rider, Nick Wuertzer used his final laps to climb up a couple spots, then pass Prichard for third with half a lap remaining. Nathan Rega finished fifth on his KTM. In moto two Woodstock KTM’s Burger picked up right where he left off earlier. “I tried to get some starts and be out front today. In the first moto I had to work up and was able to take advantage of other rider mistakes to get the win. This time I just got the holeshot and it was all mine. I never imagined it getting this rough but we have a lot of riders and it made it even more fun.” Prichard had another good moto, this time edging out Wuertzer for second place. Rega finished fourth ahead of Scott Kooistra in the moto and overall. The Open A riders put on a great show. Not only with their speed, but a never ending three way battle for the first moto win. Justin Kelly led off the start with Nicholas Inman and Joe Perron right on his rear fender. By the third lap Kelly had been dropped back to third as Inman took over. Soon after, Minnesota’s Perron made a move stick to get by Inman and Kelly seemed to be finding his rhythm again. As they entered the last lap, the three were super close with Kelly having made his way past Inman. It looked like Perron would take the win, but Kelly found a line and with only a

couple hundred yards of track left, made the pass for the win. As this all went on, Zack Scott quietly raced and finished fourth ahead of Rj Mackenzie. Moto two was more of the same... fast,

and action filled. Kelly held the lead through the first lap with Inman and Perron in his shadow. Perron then put on a charge that saw him overtake both riders for the lead.

One of the best battles of the day came in the second Open A moto between #904 Justin Kelly and Nicholas Inman

Plainview Powersports/ FXR/ PDR/ STI Tires rider Perron, “I haven’t been here in like five years and it simply took me a while to figure out the track. I sat back the first half lap and those two were battling. I had an opportunity to make a pass on Inman and then used the momentum to get by Kelly. Once I was out front this time, I was like its time to go and get this done. I dropped the hammer and it worked for the win. We have all the snow yet and I love it here. This is rougher than I’d like for my first outdoor race, but I’ll take it as it makes for better racing.” As Perron held the lead Kelly and Inman put on quite a show with their back and forth racing that eventually saw Kelly finish second.

Last out in the first set of motos was the Quad C class, with ten entries. Iowa’s Gage Beebe was the star of the first moto, staying clean after grabbing the holeshot and slowly edging away from everyone. As Beebe set the pace, Wisconsin’s Gavin Hemaner was riding hard in second. Hemaner held on until the final two laps, then the pressure from behind seemed to have taken its toll as he dropped back a couple spots to finish fifth. Blake Williamson finished second ahead of Sawyer Costelic and Jacob Hemauer. The second moto saw Beebe repeat his successful ride for another win. Costelic finished second ahead of Season Bennett (7th in moto one) and Kyle Meives (8th in moto one). Williamson wasn’t able to

finish. Costelic and Bennett’s second moto efforts were exactly what they needed as they finished second and third overall behind Beebe. With the sun still shining on everyone, the day came to an end as everyone loaded up to make the trip home. After missing several other big events this spring due to rain or snow, we couldn’t have been happier to be part of today’s race. Perfect track conditions and weather, a full day of fast racing and smiles everywhere you looked. Yes, this is just what we all needed after a long winter. Thank you everyone at Sunset Ridge for making it happen... we’re already looking forward to the next event with big expectations! CYCLE USA, May 2018
