CYCLE USA, October 2019
By Chuck Melcher, Publisher of Cycle USA.
I
’ve spent a good amount of time over the last several weeks trying to find the right way to say the run for Cycle USA was coming to an end. A good way to explain it... maybe even justify it. Even with that time, I’m still unable to. Facing a print deadline is usually a good motivator for getting things done... and this is the last item on the long list for this issue. I think the fact that it isn’t easy to announce actually says a lot about Cycle USA. The magazine started as a dream for Merle Acord of Princeton, IA over thirty years ago. Cycle USA was actually his second attempt at getting a newspaper off the ground. The second effort was successful due in part to the coincidental timing of Lofquist Racing News closing up. The Rhinelander, WI based publication had been around for several years by then. It was a little rough - simple and low budget, but it served a great need and was really welcomed when arriving in the mail to us as racers back in the eighties. This was before on-line schedules and all the other ways we get information. If the date wasn’t in the AMA magazine or Lofquist Racing... good chance no one knew about it. Mr Acord’s desire for a better venue to share his love of photos from local races was about to take off. With the support of Gerhard Ward and Bill Holt of AMA District 17, his second effort found its first base for mailings. Lofquist Racing coming to an end created a natural opening for AMA District 16, then D22 (Iowa), D23 and D15 (IN) to get involved and consider Cycle USA as their official newspaper. Almost over night Merle had a paper representing five of the AMA’s most active associations. Merle liked taking photos and the writing side of it all. He didn’t like working with the advertising sales/design and printer efforts needed to make the publication viable. As more good timing factored in, this long time racing kid from Wisconsin worked in the business end of a local newspaper and had actually tried to buy Lofquist Racing as it was winding down. He had promoted a few District 16 events, had experience with motorcycle dealerships and loved print. That was me, Chuck Melcher... and how I got involved. My agreement was to help Merle as long as he desired, then take over when he was ready. That happened a few years later.
Looking back, that was one of the best things that ever happened in my life. I loved the sport and found a way to spend what turned out to be almost thirty years fully engulfed in it. One of my early mentors was Mike Gaborsky of the Torque Center. Mike once told me to find something I loved, do it the very best I could and if I worked really hard at it - the rest would take care of itself. I’ve never forgotten that advice and try to live it every day. Twenty-nine years later pretty much all the publications like Cycle USA have long ago gone away. I contribute Cycle USA’s extended success to the many, many people and groups that together made it happen. The District organizations, their leaders, clubs and promoters. The many small local businesses and advertising clubs and promoters that trusted us to help forward their messages on to our many great and enthusiastic readers. My long time friend Dorothy Brigham who has edited probably 90% of all the photos used in the magazine. Finally, all the volunteers that have contributed endless time to writing articles and sending photos. While we paid for most of the contributed materials - it started as a token amount and never improved. Still, they supported the magazine and made it all possible. Cycle USA became a unique tool for recording special moments with each issue. This sport has and still means so much to thousands of us. All those making Cycle USA possible worked to recognize that love and passion we all have. Facilitating and helping create each issue of Cycle USA over the years has been my privilege... one I could never express enough appreciation for. It is sad to see it come to an end. Still, I need to dedicate more time to family, experience something else, different and find a new and yet to define path. I know whatever I do it will not live up to this fulfilled dream! I won’t be breaking away from our sport and will likely spend even more time helping at a district level, they never run out of a need for volunteers, and I still love this sport. What the future holds after Cycle USA is yet to be figured out. Conversations have already begun and I assure you the District leaders will continue to give you more and more value for your memberships.
Thank you for the many great years!
Range MX Double-Header Houghton, Michigan - August 10/ 11 By Jeri Nyberg
D
istrict 16 motocross continued in Upper Michigan a second consecutive weekend as the series moved northwest to Range MX in South Range, MI. Range MX is the furthest track north in the district, it may seem like you’re headed to the end of the earth (as the track crew will tell you, “that’s four miles north”), but in terms of distance it’s only about four hours from central Wisconsin, and an easy drive. The crew at Range MX has been busy this summer as they brought in many truck loads of fresh dirt to put on the track and added a few new sections. They’ve hosted many open practice days leading up to the big double header weekend, and per their usual tradition they held an open practice the Friday evening before the race weekend began. The excitement of the weekend’s turnout rang clear in the riders meeting Saturday morning. Riders were also shown their incentive to place well in their class, as Range MX did something very unique for their trophies. The area surrounding South Range is known for its rich history of copper mining, and to showcase this heritage, the weekends “trophies” were slabs of rock embedded with pure copper that were mined from right under the track itself. Upon a closer look at the rocks, each was unique in its own way in terms of colors, shape and size. How awesome for each

racer to have their own special prize unlike anyone else! The first class out of the gate on Saturday were the racers in the Schoolboy class, and reaching the corner first was Easton Block. Following Block out of the first corner was a pair of Yamahas ridden by Andrew Combs and Elliott Bennett. By lap two the riders had settled into their running positions while Block and Combs had begun to pull away. Bailey Tuoriniemi who made his way up to fourth place was starting to
be reeled in by Marshall Busse and Drake Dionne. Dionne pushed Tuoriniemi hard, and they started to close the gap that Bennett had opened up in third. On the far side of the track, Combs made a tight pass on Block. Finishing out moto one Combs had slightly pulled away from the field and Dionne got around Tuoriniemi for fourth place. Moto two began as moto one did with Block out front. The battle over second place immediately began between Combs and Busse as they raced almost the

whole first lap side by side. As they reached the green flag, Busse pulled off the track due to a flat tire. Combs made his way up to Block quickly and began to put the pressure on for the lead. Bennett whom had made his way into fourth place, had his sights set on third place that was occupied by Dionne. Combs continued to try to make his way around Block until he began to fade to the middle of the pack, his tire suffering the same fate as Busse. When the checkers flew, Block had a commanding lead followed by Dionne and Bennett. Despite his tire misfortune, Combs’ 1-4 finishes still landed him in second place overall. The Vet B/C racers also put on a good show Saturday with some very close racing in both motos. The class of 30 year and older riders ended up having their hands full of some of the +50 riders. The gate dropped for moto one and Chad St.Amour was first to round the corner followed by Jordan Klemett and Mike Schram. As St.Amour and Klemett battled for the lead, Nick Hess was quick to make an inside pass on them both and take over the first position. However, the man on the move during lap one was +50 rider Doug Forstner. As the top two began to pull away, Schram was trying hard to pass St.Amour and Sam Feller was close on their heels waiting for an opportunity to make his move. Feller’s time came as he out jumped Schram on the spectator tabletop and then move closer to St.Amour. By the end of lap three, Forster had come from the back of the pack into fourth place. Missing from their positions on the start of lap four would be both St.Amour and Feller which would move Forstner up to third place where he would finish the moto. Rounding out the top five was Jordan Deforge. Moto two began with Klemett edging out Forstner for the holeshot. Forstner and Hess quickly jumped past
Klemett on a single jump just after the first corner. Not far behind the trio was Schram, and the top four began to pull away during the first lap. Hess was quick to start try to take the lead from Forstner and the two continued to battle until lap three. Forstner came around to take the white flag and Hess was nowhere to be seen, a few riders back he crossed the line after a hard fall on the far side of the track. Forstner took the moto win with a sizeable lead. St.Amour and Feller were also able to break into the top five at the end of the race. Forstner took the overall for the day and Klemett’s strong finishes in both motos put him in the second place position. When racing finally wrapped up for the day, the Range MX crew put on a dodgeball game and even had a band come in to put on a show in the snowmobile clubhouse. A good time was had by all. A quiet, sunny Sunday morning quickly changed as bikes began to fire up and head out to practice. The harder-packed track at Range MX made for some good racing in the 65 class. In moto one Cole Goedert made it down the start straight first with Daylon Teddy and Chad Schmitt behind. Schmitt quickly got to work making his way around Teddy by diving to an inside corner then passed Goedert in the new section of rollers. Goedert was able to run with Schmitt for the first lap then the field began to spread out. Halfway through the race Thomas Luckey was starting to gain some ground on the third place rider, Teddy, and keep him in sight. Taking the checkered flag first with his big lead was Schmitt. Luckey stayed in fourth place and Braden Rose rounded out the top five. Moto two began with Schmitt grabbing the holeshot and by the end of lap one he had already opened up a big lead. Behind Schmitt the field started to dice for positions as Goedert and Teddy spent the whole first lap swapping the third place position. Teddy put up a good resistance, but Goedert was able to make the pass stick on the sandy bowl turn on the far side of the
track. Goedert then made his way up to Luckey who had been running in second and started to run all over his back tire. The pair ran side by side before Goedert finally made the pass. Teddy also was able to make the pass on Luckey after Luckey had fallen. Rose finished fourth. It was another fun and successful weekend put on by Range MX. With the upgrades being made to the track and the excitement that can be seen from the track crew, there’s no doubt that next year’s event will be just as great! Sheely shines at St Charles St Charles, Minnesota - August 24 By Tim McBride
S
t Charles, MN, a sleepy little town near the southeastern portion of the state comes to life with the annual
Winona County Fair and the sound of motorcycles skidding around the fairgrounds quarter mile oval, where perennial fast guy Shawn Sheely scored a pair of wins in the highly popular Mad Dog and Mad Dog Max classes.
The Mad Dog class allows riders with any 0-200c air cooled machine to compete. The Mad Dog Max class was introduced a couple years ago to let riders with an air cooled (four-stroke) 250cc to join the fun in the wildly popular class. Shawn Sheely seems to have the hot set up as he has been dominating both divisions throughout the 2019 season and today was no different, as he charged the checkered flag in both main events. Sheely scored the hat trick by winning the +50 main event, however luck did play a bit of a role as class favorite Dave Darsow suffered a flat rear tire while leading the race. The Twins classes are always a fan favorite. Eric Dietz took the point from early leader Josh Samuelson to score the win, Justin Berhow also slipped by Samuelson to finish second. In the Hooligan Main Samuelson redeemed himself via a wire to wire victory. The event was the ninth round of the District 23 thirteen round championship season and hosted by the good folks at Dice Brothers Racing.

Stars out at Megacross Mendota, Illinois - September 14th photos by Nick Smith
2
019 has been an interesting year, starting out with a "snow' out in April, and this race (Sept 14)) was to be the last Megacross of the season. But with the Oct 5th date being open and crew willing Megacross will return for another rumble on Saturday night. Rain has dampened many weekends all summer long, so this isn't big news and the only reason it is mentioned is that on Thursday prior to this event three inches hit the track. Cloudy and cooler temps as the fall weather comes around kept the track from drying and a mad rush ensued on Saturday to prep everything. The clouds broke on Saturday, wind kicked up and the old adage "kicking dust by noon" almost held true as it was about 4pm when the water wagon had to be brought out for a touch up. Practice went smooth and heat races revealed some "stars" were on hand to make this Megacross a very interesting race night. The Geistler family and Rides Unlimited decided that after some mid week training that they would bring out their riders and trainer to the event for some competition. Krystian Janik, the local kid who just happens to ride for Team Green, Evan Ferry (son of Tim Ferry), Brice Klippel part of the BWR Team, Patrick Murphy who hasn't been out since he was on minis, the Geistler kids who race here when home and lets not forget the Megacross regulars, the gates were full, the competition strong and there was great racing all night. Oh that's right, the local kid came home to his roots to hang out as well, like so many big name stars of the world, you know Cher, Sting, Bono, Madonna, well you get the idea, we have Chase Sexton. He came out, hung with all the riders with a large group of kids around him all night - in which he feels right at home with. We think of 486, of course he was 40, and now 12

23. At the end of the night, one of the last vehicles to leave the parking lot was a white van with Florida plates and of course it started to rain! All this was going on, and here walks up Mr Tommy Hofmaster, not unique as he and the boys always walk the track looking for lines, and inspect it every race. This night was special though. Tommy had a sticker on his shirt with the number 40, nope it wasn't how many laps he planned to lead this night - it was his birthday. Just think of that, Tommy is 40 years old, how is that possible? Add to that "little" brother Dean Jr came home from Cali to surprise Tom on his birthday. Old home week should have been the title of this night’s racing! 125cc class has had it's battles all year, this night was no different except the Florida kid Evan Ferry on a Husky wasn't going to let the locals run away, or even play in the lead too long. He made some solid racing moves and made it known that whipping that bike and roosting the competition was the plan for the day. The Ward boys did their best to keep up as well as Hunter Billingsley on his Ktm, but a fall in the heat race aggravated a thumb injury which he tried his damndest to hold on in the main but simply couldn't manage his normal speed. Hunter managed to squeak out a 4th in the main, hats off to the effort, not sure many could hang on like that. Garrett Ward took second 1/2 a straight back with Travis Ward keeping his kid bother honest and almost had a repeat of the July race where they both hit the ground at the checkers, this time however, the younger one used the inside line, blocked the pass attempt and held second. Austin Beaty holeshotted the 14-24 class with his bright red Honda, but Conner Robinson and Brice Klippel weren't done with thier work. Robinson passed for the lead with Klippel (first ride ever at Megacross) tagging along and railing the berms, keeping the KTM of Robinson on the gas. Beaty's first year in A class has seen steady improvement all season not to long and his work will reward him in top step finishes. Who the heck is on the #52 Yamaha? We all know it is Brian Cary's bike, but we also know he doesn't ride Open A, CYCLE USA, October 2019
13
then a closer look and another "old" name from Megacross, Justin Kelly decided to make the long trip of eight miles to hammer some laps and challenge that Hofmaster guy who has dominated the season so far. Well Justin wasn't playing, only a few riders have been launching into the whoops, but the 52 machine didn't hesitate when that small table top came around and boom hucking that like he has done it is whole life. Hofmaster was going to have to ride a little harder tonight, Kelly was on his game. Throw in Brian White and Nick Wallace, Brice Klippel - the Open A class had solid competition. Tommy pushed his 250 smoker to the limits, second lap up and over the berm before getting back on the rear wheel of Kelly. Kelly kept his lead solid and Hofmaster took the second step of the podium with White third. Not to be out done by the fast old guys, Super Mini lined up with Talan Zollers, Krystain Janik, and Evan Ferry. Ferry got the win in the heat but Janik wasn't going let that slide in the main. Zollers wasn't
going to let them have all the fun as he pressed them two hard the whole moto. Janik holeshotted, Ferry tried new lines but couldn't get around. Every time in the whoops Janik would stay low, Ferry would launch them, but at the end he couldn't make the inside line work. Bodie Roth took fourth and Zachery Johnson coming off a broken arm earlier in the year has clawed his way back into racing form and finished fifth. +30B/C class rolls in here with high expectations, the top riders in this class have a close battle every race. Points leader Jake Fabrizius was going to have to eat his wheaties on this night since Cory Lingle and Bryce Olson were looking for the win. Lingle took the heat race. But, as we all know the heat race only gets you a gate pick. The main changed up, this time Olson got a big holeshot, with Olson and Brent Johnson right behind. This night belonged to Olson as the Johnson/ Fabrizius duo battled while the leader snuck away. Looks like the C classes will have some
input on the B class next season. Dominant riders in the two classes are coming into their own. Skyler Williams being one of them had a double win tonight in 250 and Open C. Checking the series overalls and the double points event for the Megacross Champ race these classes will come down to the wire in the series and D17 overall. The classes were full this race night, the pits were even more full with many watching and hanging out. Perfect weather tends to do that. We will have to put in some honorable mentions as the Illinois Valley area has been churning out more and more good riders over the years. The up and comers like Grant Robinson in 65 Beginner, Nate Bierbom in 65Sr, Brody Brewer with the win in the 85Jr class, these riders will be the ones to look for as they mature and grow into the riders of the adult classes in a very short few years. eptember is probably one of the best months for motocross because its usually cooler and the weather is perfect. The sad part is the season for racing is usually close to the end, and that dreadful "S word" is right around the corner. But let's enjoy our dirt bikes and being outside while we can. The Dirty Old Blasters weekend was a sweet success. The battles like always were intense and the turnout was even better. Having practice on Friday, Vet racing on Saturday and full on District 16 racing on Sunday made for a really busy weekend for the Aztalan crew.
Saturday’s +35A class had some impressive riders including Kurt Jennison and Brad Johnson. Jennison absolutely dominated both motos. It's crazy to see this guy not race a dirt bike all year, and he shows up randomly and beats everyone. Johnson went down in moto one and his bike took out Andrew Bowman making it to where Bowman didn’t make the second moto. I hate seeing riders crash and really hope for a speedy recovery for Bowman. Aaron Smith took second followed by Aaron Stroebel third. We caught up with Jennison and asked about the weekend. “Friday practice for the vet riders was so good. Best I’ve ever seen
the track. Saturday was equally good. The vet National had a great turnout and the track was in perfect condition. Getting back out there racing was a lot of fun. I was able to win both motos in +35A so that was pretty awesome! Sunday was all about my kids racing.” Asked how he rides once a year and dominates the field? “I don’t know that what I did racing would be considered “dominating” the field. I still have the desire to win regardless of how much time I put on the bike. I also cant get beat in front of kids because I’ll never hear the end of it. So I have that a little more motivation as well. Our family obviously loves coming for the rac-

with each other on and off the track.” Ty Tyrrell topped his A class motos as well. He was basically unstoppable. It's awesome seeing guys from out of state make the races. The commitment is real at that point. I had a chance to catch up with the Illinois native about his experience racing in Wisconsin for the summer. “My weekend at Aztalan was good. I pulled a couple holeshots both days, was able to get off the overall in both classes on Saturday for the vet race (+18A and +25A) and Sunday was able to get both moto wins in +25 and third in Open A. The track was in great shape with all the added sand. Seems like the turnout at the D16 events has been good all year. I've been trying to make it to Azzy a couple times a year. They run a great show and usually have a good turnout.” Another standout for me on Sunday was Elijah Tetzlaff. After Loretta’s he moved up to B class and is easily showing A class speed. Watching him and Jamison DuClos battle back
and fourth was intense. He has what seems to be unlimited talent. Although the season is coming to an end, it's still awesome to see such big turnouts at the end of the season. I feel the October race wont disappoint either. I really hope to see everyone at the last round! Miller, Boaz duke it out at the Spring Creek Viking Clash Millville, Minnesota - September 1 By Rolfe Otterness
H
enry Miller and Josh Boaz put on a show for the spectators as the Spring Creek Viking Clash returned for the twelfth year, with good battles in the 14-24A and Open A classes. The two riders seemed to be pretty evenly matched and really duked it out with Miller’s eventual wins in both classes coming via 2-1 moto scores. Boaz, having the more recent familiarity with the track, was able to match pace with Miller to a pretty large extent. In the later motos perhaps it
was Miller’s endurance that gave him more of an edge after a long summer of racing the Pro nationals. As previously mentioned, this was the return of the now-classic Viking Clash, a fall tradition with extra activities over the Labor Day weekend, including the popular tug-ofwar at the creek and the infamous Bubble Ball event. Sunday was the Viking Clash with a second full day of racing on Monday to wrap up the weekend. The Clash itself was enticing enough to draw 670 entries, and the racing was great with primo track conditions and a lack of the long ruts that were prevalent for the majority of the sum-

mer’s races due to the rainy weather. Boaz grabbed the holeshot to lead early in the first Open A race. Seth Fischer and Brennan Myers slotted into the 2-3 spots initially while Miller took time to sample the dirt up close on lap one. Boaz goosed up the throttle and built a nice lead while Miller quickly sliced through traffic to take over third by the end of lap two. Another couple of laps saw him close in on Fischer and after a bit of a dice, take charge of second place. Boaz’s lead started to shrink as the race wound down but the checkered brought him the win by a safe margin despite Miller’s charge. Fischer maintained a good pace to grasp third over Myers and Chase Becker. Miller bounced back in the second moto to take the win and overall ahead of Boaz. Jacqueline Riess made a dash to the front of the pack as the Women’s class attacked the track for their first moto and began to stretch out a lead over Marissa Swank and Krista Pyburn. As they ran on in that order, Sophia Johnson, in fourth, was getting challenged by Lexi Dyekman. With the checkers in sight Dyekman charged down the hill into the last turn in a last pass attempt but Johnson throttled out of the turn to hang onto fourth by half a bike length. Reiss surged into the lead in moto two and again began to pull away from the competition. Swank and Pyburn got spread out a bit behind her while Dyekman got in front of Johnson early in the moto and held off any charge that Johnson put forth. That tied up the order for the top five and Reiss came across the line with about an eight second lead for the win with the other riders maintaining places. Wyatt Niedfeldt tore up the start straight to grab the holeshot in the 65cc 7-11 class. He was under immediate attack though and Calvin Kiousis was quick to pounce in turn three. Lyler Hagedorn and Kai Morgan soon slotted into the next two positions and the top three ran off from the rest of the pack as they all circulated at close to the same speed for the rest of the race. Crayten Roberts and Carson Wittman moved up a bit to hold fourth and fifth at the flag. Kiousis grabbed the next holeshot and found Hagedorn challenging him for the first lap before things settled down a bit and

Muente Magnificent at Mauston Mauston, Wisconsin - September 14/15 By Doug Hay, Photos by Kevin and Shari Huber
W
OTA had their final points paying event of 2019 at Smagical Rock in Mauston, WI. The property is owned by Noel Smage, who has been riding trials a long time (since before the Microwave oven was invented). The weather was perfect the entire weekend. In the Championship class, Will Check had a spectacular ride on his Scorpa and came up only five points short of beating National Champion Jason Waldo, 35 to 39 points. Waldo had a perfect WOTA season,
all wins. The Expert class was won by Noel Smage, he beat new State Expert Champ Keith Johnson 18 points to 65 points. I think Keith took it easy knowing he had the title wrapped up. Advanced class had nine riders. Some ringer from Pennsylvania kicked our butts, but nobody cared because Phil Smage came in second place. Yes, the same Phil Smage that had a horrible crash on a Polaris UTV about 15 months ago. He still has trouble with his hands and arms but he held on great when it mattered most. There were some dangerous downhills and I though
“this may not end well” but he knew he could do it. It was very inspiring. Kyle Hach took the third spot on the podium. A full Intermediate class was won by Mark Misek with 19 points. Fred Sassi from Illinois was two points back, and Spencer Stone finished third. Kurt Muente needed a good finish to lock up the points championship, but too many 3’s and 5’s were his downfall. Adam Gustafson also had a shot at winning the championship, but an eighth place finish didn’t help. Heading into Sunday, Gustafson had the points lead, with Muente and Misek close enough to win with some luck.

The Novice class was won by new State Champ Ben Ezell. Three points behind was Steve Schmidt from Mukwanago, WI. Kris Tibor was just one point behind Steve, and John Huntress was fourth. The young guy won the old bike class. Pat Doll beat Kevin Huber on vintage bikes. Pat had an old Fantic 300 (I had one, hated it, still keeps me up at night), and Kevin rode an old Suzuki. The Youth class was the “Misek” show, with Ivan winning and sister Veronica second. Kaspar Tibor was third. With Mark Misek winning Intermediate, that family took home a lot of awards. Sunday was beautiful, a great day for trials, I will summarize the day. Waldo beat Check by 12 points. Noel Smage thumped Keith Johnson again. Ringer from PA won Advanced, amazing Phil Smage was 1 point back, and Kyle Hach rode AWESOME for 3rd. Tibor won novice for a nice 3-1 week-
end. Schmidt went 2-2, and Ezell went 1-3, they flipped on Sunday. Doll won vintage again. Kaspar Tibor won the Youth class by 6 points, and Veronica Misek won the season Championship. The real drama of the day was the final points standing for Intermediate. Adam Gustafson could lock up the title with a second place finish. Kurt Muente pretty much had to win and hope Gustafson was third or worse. Misek needed a win and a little luck. Muente layed the smack down and had the lowest score with just 7 points in Veronica Misek, your Youth class State Champion.
21 sections. Illinois rider Fred Sassi was second, but he doesn’t count for WOTA points. Misek and Gustafson TIED for third place! So it goes to a tie breaker, and Misek had 10 cleans to 8 for Gustafson. So Misek gets the 25 second place points, and Gustafson 21. This was going to be close! Kurt Muente won the WOTA/ D16 championship with 221 points. Adam Gustafson is 2nd with 217 points, and Mark Misek 3rd with 213 points. If Gustafson had 1 less point, he would have received 4 more championship points, so he would have been tied with Muente, and Gustafson would have won the tie-breaker. Gustafson would be the State Champion – if he had one less point. I’ve said it before – every point counts! New Ulm Short Track Two days of District 23 racing New Ulm, Minnesota - Sept. 14-15 By Zach Bailey
W
ith the end of summer drawing near, the weekend of Sept. 14-15 marked the second-to-last weekend of District 23 Flat Track racing for the 2019 season, hosted by The Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club in New Ulm, Minnesota. With over twenty classes racing during the Saturday afternoon show, it was the Vet +30 class that stole the show, not only as the largest class of the day, but also filled with multiple position swaps at the front of the pack. Hot off heat race wins in the class earlier that day, Sam Demiller and Randy Thistle were eyeing up the top spot of the podium for the feature. Going into the first turn, however, it would be Tory Jones getting the holeshot followed closely behind by Demiller, Thistle and Rich Delak. Thistle, Demiller and Delak quickly made their way up to the top three spots. After sliding out the groove in turn four, Demiller gave up the second place spot to Delak, who now had his eyes set on the top spot of the podium. “My plan after the bad start was to remain patient and try different areas of the corner for traction to get a better drive com-
ing out,” Delak said. “I felt at lap one that my bike was working pretty good and I would be able to move up.” After multiple attempts to make the pass, Delak was able to capitalize just before the white flag as Thistle came out of turn four high. After the race, Delak said softening up the rear shocks rebound and increasing the tire pressure were two of the changes that were key to finishing at the top of the podium for the main. “If it wasn’t for my framer being so shiny and expensive I would have put a little more muscle into pushing to the front,” Delak said. “But I really don’t want to crash that bike or get tangled up too much, so I just took my time.” Delak, Verlon Langland and Demiller finished on the top three spots. Moving into Sunday’s event, the Pro/ Expert class was the main to watch. Langland, who finished second in the Pro/ Expert feature during Saturday’s races came into the main having won the heat earlier in the day. As the feature began, Langland ended up racing into the first turn in third, behind the Clint Erickson and Cj Beving. By the end of the first lap Beving slid back to fourth, with Jacob Walter moving up to second. By the midpoint of the race, Erickson and Walter had distanced themselves from Langland in third, and began a battle at the front

of the pack. It would be Erickson, however, leading the race from green to checkered. “Getting some clean track in front of me was key, and a good start,” Erickson said about leading the entirety of the race. “I like having a clean track, then you can run your own race. If there’s a bad patch you can go around it, you don’t have to go through it.” Erickson’s son, Corbin Erickson, was one of the other competitors in the Pro/ Expert class during Sunday’s races. When asked about being able to race against his son, Erickson said it is fun. “He tries to learn from me a little bit, and maybe one of these days he’ll be up there and we’ll be able to rub elbows,” Erickson said. Battle of Wisconsin Tigerton, Wisconsin - August 18 By Doug Forstner, Photos by Kaila Forstner
W
isconsin’s highly anticipated Battle of Wisconsin supercross/ motocross event hit the Embarrass River ATV Campground and facility in Tigerton, Wisconsin the third weekend in August for a fun filled energetic weekend of racing. Numbers for the weekend’s racing was better than 2018 so the word is out that this is a fun event to attend, in its fourth year now and it was a packed house. Riders again came from as far south as Florida. Friday the riders are presented with two groomed tracks. Afternoon the riders hit the moto track and of course, mother nature decided to have a burst of energy and downpour on the riders. However, things passed by quickly and then after a short break, they were able to hit the supercross

track under the United Rentals lights. Saturday is a casual day in the morning, weather was fantastic and people were able to enjoy breakfast, hang out, go for walks, swimming or rope swinging in the Embarrass River, or just plain enjoying the area and relaxing some. Practice started around 3pm in the afternoon followed by heat races which lead up to the Supercross main events under the lights. The format for this race is supercross on Saturday, and motocross on Sunday combining the two overall results for your Battle of Wisconsin AMA Champions. Also awarded is the Dealer Cup award, which awards the dealership with the most riders on the podium riding for that dealership, and a Youth, Amateur and Vet Battle Commander awards rewarding the best of the best. Racing under the lights gives riders that
big time racing feeling and everyone wants to do their best so they can be interviewed up on the podium just like the pros we see on tv. Part of the fun, is if you do make it onto the podium, the master of ceremonies Tommy “Lot T” Perryman gets to interview you and or possibly the lovely Miss Jen Latour helping out. It’s not quite Ralph Shaheen and Dianna Dahlgren, but its Wisconsin’s version none the less and we love it! As a side note, Perryman also raced and when he won his class he was able to interview himself on the podium. Mini 85 9-11 under the lights saw Riley Busse taking the win over Brody Barth, Deegan Vanvreede, Milo Maas and Jayden Wolf. This year the 65cc class has had some of the biggest turnouts and the competition is next level with some of these little rippers. Barth took the win over Logan Kresal, Jayce Wolf, Grant Neubauer and Kane Kalies. In other mini action, Adam Graham took the Peewee 46 class win followed by Weston Otto, Austin Klismet, Blake Beatka and Jaxon Helland. Zack Augustine took the win in the other Peewee 7-8 class over Levi Gower, Brayton Wills, Devin Bares and Jenna Klismet. Open A class saw Travis Sewell top Nate Laporte, Bryce Hansen, Tyler Skodras and Kyle Hameister. If you ask me, that is some fast guys to set your sights on and try to be top five. Open B class saw Elijah Tetzlaff take the win over Tyler Kalies, Kendall Biever, Caden Damp and Austin Yager. Jordan Biese took a break from racing four wheels and decided to try two again, and for his efforts took the win in 14-24B/C over Brock Noreen, Dane Klinger, Max Mayer and Yager. As soon as racing concluded Saturday night, the lights were turned off and everyone hit the rack. Things quickly got under way Sunday morning with practice followed by moto one. Again the combined score of your two motos on Sunday is paired up with your overall from Saturday night. Back to mini action, Mini 85cc 9-11 class was pretty easy to figure
out as Riley Busse won both his motos on Sunday, giving him the championship over Vanvreede who was very consistent going 3-3 for second. Hayden Schumacher went 2-4 for third overall. Barth used his 6-2 scores to snag fourth and Jayden Wolf was also consistent going 5-5 for fifth. Busse also ended up with scoring the Youth Battle Commander award. 65cc 7-11 saw Barth win both motos and have him crowned champion. Neubauer likes the outdoors and his 2-2 scores gave him second on the day. Kresal was solid in third on the day behind Neubauer both motos. Brecken Maas swapped motos with Isaac Opalewski and they rounded out the top five. Adam Graham won the Peewee 4-6 class and Zack Augustine took home the honors in the Peewee 7-8 each winning both motos. Best part I feel of the whole weekend is the Peewee interviews, if that doesn’t put a smile on your face, nothing will. These kids just hit the big time. Tell me about your holeshot? Good. How was your moto? Good, Did you feel fast out there? Yup, anybody you would like to thank? Mom and Dad! Next. Open A again saw Sewell out front both motos ahead of the Hansen brothers who were finally racing the A class together.

The family that races together stays together
Bryce went 2-2 ahead of Blake’s 3-3. Justin Wolf finished fourth overall going 5-4, beating Laporte’s 4-5. All these guys were absolutely hammering the track as hard as they could to gain every inch on their competition. Sewell also grabbed the Vet Battle Commander award as he won +30A. As motos were winding down, the Dealer
Cup was still on the line and it was coming down to Southeast Sales and Sportland 2 and this year it was Sportland 2 coming home with the win, having the most riders on the podium all weekend. A bunch of work goes into this event being one of a kind, and if you haven’t tried it yet, make sure to put it on your calendar for next year.

.6 no not on the Richter scale but in the rain gauge, this is what washed out the Saturday GP and tried to squash the FVOR Hare Scrambles on Sunday. This flooded the lower section of the riding park which isn’t a bad thing as it re-coats the trails with some much needed top soil, but the day of the gp and day prior to the HS made for some interesting changes. The Gp was moved to October. Never in the history of FVOR has a HS been rained out. So that "record" is now still in tack for another of the seventeen years. This didn't hurt the racing action, in fact it gave the mud riders a chance to show their skills. It's tough to see the kids go first when conditions are like they were this weekend. Super Minis, 85, 65's and Women lined up 9am to hit a mud covered course. Two hills
AA rider Matt Mcdonald chased the leader all day. A huge last minute effort saved second place
were in still in place. Reece Frankford holeshoted into the deep first turn and didn't look back as he controlled his class from the start. 85cc class had thirteen riders with the main players were here to battle. Ayden White has shown some new speed in the last two races and now has kept Landon Lee at bay twice. Cole Morgan was on hand to do his once a year FVOR race and the top three riders in this class were separated by a mere twenty some seconds! The race was shortened to 45 minutes. Top eight riders did five laps. Morning big bike classes are all C classes and age classes +50, +60, etc. Now that the kids got the heaviest of the slime moved to the edges it was time to go deep! You know, as in deep ruts, and deeper water holes so that one wrong step and it will be time to lift and separate something while unsticking your machine. Stacey Stewart
overalled the morning race, winning his +50A class. His competition didn’t let him rest much early in the race. Tim Farrell and Jay Hall battled like always as Stewart slowly pulled a lead with a 2.5 minute lead at the end. Ashton Lyons won the "little" C class, with Jhak Walker and Lukasz sienkiewicz filling the podium. The AA class had the top D17 hitters coming to do battle, and it started right away in the first turn. It was a little wet in the starting area - good positions way outside and way inside. The middle was a quagmire. Four of the eight have won this class one time or another. When the start flag waved, inside line went to Garrett Ward pinching off Tanner Whipple, while from the outside came Matt Mcdonald, and Colt Converse, coming in hot. In this class knows there is no "back off" so Ward hit Mcdonald, which in turn runs into Converse - miraculously they all stayed up! This was likely to be a fun races to watch, after seeing all this happening in the first turn. Mud specialist Hall's Cycles Jarred Hall got out front exited the first corner. Then Converse back through the timber on his way to the truck! Turns out that with all the banging, Colt's shifter was bent and had to be fixed. Seconds turns to minutes when this happens, and once fixed he was on a mission! That "goofy" sound coming from the timber this whole race... well that was Colt on the rev limiter of that 250. Meantime Hall was putting 20 seconds on the best friends of Whipple and Mcdonald. Hall made a mistake in the second lap and dropped to third. Whipple, if you know him, second doesn't work, he wins, the eye of the tiger in that kid is brutal, while all time he is smiling. Ben Schmidt, following in his dad’s footsteps, being a solid mudder reeled in Hall towards the end of the race, but had to settle for fourth place. Only Whipple, Mcdonald, and Hall got to do eleven laps. Well on the last lap Mcdonald found out his Ktm was thirsty... running out of gas. Well this kid doesn't quit either. The kids from the morning race always go and watch the hot spots of the course, and sitting right there was one of the Doer kids, (no one cept mom can tell them apart), Mcdonald hops on Doer’s pit bike, runs up to CYCLE USA, October 2019

his truck, grabs his gas can and back he comes to get that splash he needs to finish. Taking 4.22 minutes just in case you wonder. Mcdonald had enough of a lead to still hold his second place finish. The rumor is that this Doer twin only requested and got a snow cone after the race was over! That right there is how off-road riders think. They know it’s worth it and they show it every race. Chris Breitwieser led the Quad A class into the timber before Carter Holder passed for the lead. The two put a good distance on Mickey Martin. The amount of mud hanging from the trees after these guys got done was astounding. Fortitude, stamina, heart, and the will to prove that mother nature can be conquered with the right attitude. These riders didn't travel hundreds of miles to find sunshine, they didn’t sit home on the couch and watch a stick and ball sport. They simply conquered the task at hand - not because it was easy, but because it wasn’t. This is what racing is about, from the beginner to the accomplished pro. Top that off, many rode a 60 mile enduro over at WFO on Saturday as well. Nice work riders! Stadium Motocross running Strong in Lake County! Grayslake, Illinois - August 24 By Mariska Minkus
I
t’s hard to believe that by the time you read this, kids will be back in school. And even though fall has arrived there’s still more stadium racing to be had with JennerationMX Series continuing into October. For this round we had fine weather with the sun shining, temps were in the upper 70’s and as the sun began to set it gave way to a little nip in the air for the evening, great for the racers. Track prep had begun very early in the day. With no rain for the past week, Mark Jennison Sr. and the crew were working hard to bring
moisture to the dry soil. By the time practice started they were able to get about 10K gallons of water put down to help make conditions ready to race. Kurt Jennison, founder of JennerationMX stated, “the conditions were not ideal but raceable for the night. We have plans to continue to work on the conditions of the track and soil to help hold some moisture for the upcoming races.” Kurt is an innovator and always looking for something new to keep things fun and exciting. With this round he added a new class, Pit bike (15 & under) giving the young moto riders a little more time on the track to have fun. These riders couldn’t
wait to get out there, with eight riders on the gate on pit bikes of all types, colors and size, and the one thing they all had in common were big smiles and being anxious to go have fun on the big track. In the heat race the top four riders were battling it out in every turn, going back and forth. At the checkered flag it was Aiden Biersteker with the win ahead of Kain Jennison, Jack Sparks and Bryce Arnold right behind in 4th. As they lined up for the main the competitive attitude had grown. At the checkered flag it was Jack Sparks (IL) earning the win for the night followed by Biersteker, Arnold and Jennison. All the riders expressed how much fun they had and are

looking forward to the next round. Open C was almost a repeat performance The biggest classes of the night were of the 250C motos, but this time the Honda 250C and Open C, with the top riders really rider Williams was able to win the heat and battling in each moto for the win. 250C the main. In the heat Sparks was mid pack heat race it was Skyler Williams (IL) with on the start making passes to get himself up the holeshot but Jack Sparks (IL) was right on his rear tire looking for just the right spot to make the pass. On the third lap as they were coming through the rhythm section Sparks made his move in the next corner by getting on the inside. Trevor Lloyd (WI) finished third. In the main it was Williams & Sparks once again, head to head to the first turn with Williams pulling the holeshot. Sparks was in second trying to get the pass. By the end of the moto it was Williams finishing (2-1) with the win ahead of Sparks and the Yamaha of Drake Brummel. Steven Minkus went (1-1) in both 250B & Open B
to 4th by the checkered flag. In the Main the two of them were right with each other again, Williams leading with Sparks putting in smooth consistent laps. Williams made sure he protected every line and denied Sparks the passing opportunity. At the end it was Williams (1-1), Sparks (4-2) and finishing in third was Logan See (WI) who did an awesome job of riding his Kawi to a (5-3) for the night. It’s always a good sight to see so many riders coming into our sport, giving promise to the future of motocross, the exact reason why the Jenninsons work so hard to put these races together, and help keep motocross thriving! This night was no exception with the number of younger riders that came out to race. In the Peewee class and 50Jr it was Holden Lamkin (IL) riding consistently on the #769 Cobra and winning the overall in both classes. Also in the Peewee division were the KTM riders of Cole

Johler (2-2) and Archer Smith who finished 5th in the heat race and then rode with heart to finish 3rd in the main. 50JR was almost a repeat of the with the exception of Blake Beatka (WI) winning the heat race but finishing 3rd in the main, which gave Lamkin the overall, going (2-1) Archer Smith (2-2) and Blake Beatka (WI) riding his KTM (1-3) into 3rd for the night. Top finisher for the night was #118 Ryder Beth (WI) fresh off his wins from the previous weekend at the Battle of Wisconsin and he was still on fire this night, racing four classes with eight wins. He won SchoolBoy 1, 125cc, 85 Open and Super Mini. Afterward the fun evening, Kurt Jennison commented, “We had a great night with a surprisingly good number of spectators that showed up to watch the action. We will be working on the track to help with conditions. This is extremely important to us and for the racers! Got to give it up to our team, they do a great job, I couldn’t do this on my own and special thank you to my wife Ali for all her hard work!” The crew they have working does a great job to keep the evening running smoothly, and it’s great to have a series like this back in the area. The community of fans that come out to spectate have shown their excitement with each race. Yes, the future looks bright with all the fast, and upcoming riders in our area and JennerationMX has one more race for the 2019 Series with points winners still up for grabs, so set your calendar to October 19th for the final round, you don’t want to miss it!
