Sunset Ridge Motocross Nuclear-Sunset Power Series comes to Walnut, IL Walnut, Illinois- July 28 By Mariska MInkus
W
ith great enthusiasm it was Round #3 of the Nuclear-Sunset Power Series being hosted at Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut, IL. The sun was shining and everyone was grateful for a nice breeze to help cool things down just a tad, those that had fans running were even happier. Bob & Jan Pistole, owners of Sunset Ridge MX and the staff were working hard to get all the riders signed up and the final track preparations completed for the full day of racing that was to come - and what a day it was! With the last two rounds of the NuclearSunset Power Series being held at Sunset Ridge MX, there is the addition of quad classes to the roster. There aren’t a lot of motocross tracks that still have quads racing with the bikes, but Sunset has always worked to have a place for them. The day started with a combined gate drop of 4 Wheel A/B and 4 Wheel C on a second drop. They had a decent turnout of
racers. In the A class it was Keaton Sterk who made the trip from Iowa out front with the overall win for the day. 4 Wheel B motos had six riders with Gavin Hadu (IN) going 2-1 for the overall. In second was Andrea Berger (WI) who went (1-2) and running a consistent (3-3) on his Honda was Chris Lemaster (IL). The C class had seven riders. In both motos they ran pretty consistent with the exception of Chris Lemaster (IL) and Clint Nekola (IA) dicing it out for third. At the end of the second moto the results were Kyle Smith (IL) for first, Austin Hall (WI) on his Yamaha second as Lemaster grabbed third overall ahead of Nekola. 250A was the next class on the line and they came prepared to do battle. As the gate dropped it was full throttle through the loamy deep sand to get to the sweeping left hander first. Out front with the holeshot was the Woodstock KTM/ JennerationMX/ TZR sponsored Cody Vanbuskirk (IL) with Connor Burger (IL) charging behind him to try and get past. Neither of the riders was letting off and they continued through the entire five laps, pushing hard to gain any
space they could. At the checkered flag it was Vanbuskirk with the win and Burger right behind. The second moto was even more exciting with Burger getting the holeshot and clicking down seconds on the clock to create a nice gap. Vanbuskirk found himself playing the cat and mouse game after a bad start but he was fast and determined to make the needed passes to catch Burger. Vanbuskirk made his final pass into second and was right on the rear tire of Burger. They were both pushing the limits and by this time gained about a ten second lead from the pack. Over every jump Burger kept looking back to see just where Vanbuskirk was. The racing continued for a few laps with Vanbuskirk just waiting to make his move until Vanbuskirk unfortunately ended up stuffing it in a corner, tipping over. With the gap they developed Vanbuskirk was still in second as Burger caught the checkered flag. Burger won the overall with a 2-1 finishes ahead of Vanbuskirk, Honda rider of Nick Wallace (3-4) and Brandon Pope (IL) on his Yamaha (5-3).

KTM rider Vanbuskirk, “The track shaped up a little different than usual with the quads racing ahead of us, but it got rough and made for some good racing. The second moto I didn’t get a great start and had to pass a few guys for second.” Nick Wallace stated, “I got pretty bad starts and tried to work my way up but Burger and Vanbuskirk were too far gone.” As the racing continued and the temperatures were climbing it was the 65Jr class competing for the prestigious top positions, and they put on quite a show. There was some great racing to watch, with consistency throughout each moto. It’s apparent that the young riders of today are training and learning the proper technique necessary for racing. It’s like watching mini pro riders as they navigate the corners and jumps, not to mention the determination of giving it their all till the waving checkered flag. In each of the motos, the top positions were the same. With a repeat performance in the second moto it was KTM rider Matthew Alshouse (IL) with the overall win. Second was Tom Luberda Jr (IL) ahead of #37 Patrick Mikulcik (IL) on his KTM. Watching these riders today shows a promising future for motocross in the years ahead. One can only imagine how fast they will be then. In the Women’s class all the riders had a

successful day. They have proven to be very competitive for years now and it’s always a great sight to have a nice turnout on the gate. In the first moto it is was #18 Kyleigh Mclaughlin (IL) on her Kawasaki getting the holeshot with Erin Pusateri (WI) and #122 Ashliegh Newmarker (IL) right behind her. This was Newmarker’s first race back since sustaining an injury back in 2016. Kate Duerig (IL) almost missed the gate drop but got herself focused and had a great ride. In the second moto we saw McLaughlin with another great start and leading the class. They all had a repeat performance and rode fast. McLaughlin, “My goal for the day was to get a couple of good starts and ride my own race. I did my own thing and came away healthy with two moto wins. All the ladies rode awesome and the crew here at Sunset does a great job of prepping the track.” The camaraderie of the women is always a great thing to see, with support and encouragement for each other when they are together. Woodstock KTM/ Hoosier Tire sponsored Pusateri stated, “Sunset is one of my favorite places and the track is always awesome. I felt good throughout the day for not really riding much this summer.” The Pistole family does a great job of keeping the track maintained and keeping the day going smoothly. And don’t forget the great food at the concession stand, I saw a chicken Quesadilla being made that I will have to try next time! With the Series Championship points being close for many of the classes, you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss out on the final round of the series at Sunset Ridge MX on September 22nd. The points could go either way, but you have to race to win! Even if you aren’t in the run for a championship, you know the Sunset team will deliver a great track and weekend of riding/racing.

zra Brusky dominated the 505cc Amateur class at The Hill Raceway, winning the fastest heat race, taking the lead on the third lap of the final, and pulling away to a comfortable win. Sixty-one entries from six states trekked up the Door County peninsula for the annual races on the 1/3-mile oval. Dave Kilkenny claimed the first Hooligan heat race of the night, taking Justin Limberg (who had a huge cheering section), Louie Lauters and Eric Schuelke into the final. Michael Van Langen scored the top spot in the second heat race, taking Jordan Houpt, Danny Murre, and Dan Lauters to the final. Van Langen and Houpt jumped to the front of the Hooligan Final with Van Langen wrestling control on lap three and cutting perfect laps from then on. Kilkenny overcame a bad start to claim the runner-up spot from Houpt on lap eight. Tyler Eisenhauer sat on the pole for the Hooligan B-Main, and challenged Bobby Reese for the lead on the opening lap, before dropping to the rear of the field on the second lap with a mechanical issue. Eisenhauer charged through the field, but threw his Sportster away on the back straight on lap six. Goran Zadrima was unable to avoid the downed bike and went down as well, which ended the race prematurely. Reese was awarded the win on his Yamaha over Drew Saunders and Hannah Lange. Ezra Brusky led Loyal Prach and Kyle Meiers into the final out of the 505cc Amateur heat one. Ethan Rosine led every lap of heat two over Phil Popour and Izzy Andresen. Rosine, Brusky, Meiers, and Prach battled side by side for the opening four laps of the final before Brusky put his head down and opened a gap on the others. Rosine held on for second over Meiers, Prach and Popour. Brusky credited his newfound speed and confidence 10

to his time spent at the AMA Amateur Nationals in July. Best race of the night went to Cole Andresen in the 250cc Amateur class, but just barely. Andresen and Rosine fought tooth-and-nail for the first three laps before an uncharacteristic slip by Rosine allowed Andresen to get away. Sort of. Izzy Andresen powered around Rosine using a high line that no one else was using all night and reeled in her brother, Cole, with just two to go. Izzy made a charge at the line for the white flag that came up a little short, lost a lot of ground in turn 1-2 on the last lap, but powered around her high line to take an unexpected shot at the win. She came up a foot short at the stripe. Cole was happy with the win, but said Izzy would be equally happy with her close second place finish.

Dan Peterson (IL) led Robert Reed (CA) and Mike Yogerst (WI) home in the first Senior heat race. Dave Gabert (FL) took the second heat win away from Brian Martens (WI) on the final lap. In the final, Peterson grabbed the lead and never looked back, powering through 3-4 harder than anyone else had been all night long. Reed came home second over Martens, Yogerst, and Chuck Clark. Greg Moss Memorial HS Byron, Illinois - August 4 By Austin Wells, Photos by BriAnn Wells
T
he Greg Moss Memorial Hare Scramble race held at Byron, IL’s Motosports Park seems to keep growing. This year, the event was not only co-sanctioned with AMA District 16, 17 and the WFO Promotions Hare Scramble series like it has been in past, but the growing Border Battle XC Series joined to bring the best off-road riders from surrounding
states to face off. With a big pro purse, Hoosier Tires offering big money in contingency for pro and amateur classes, and some of the best trails and moto track in the area, the event brought in nearly 250 entries. With no rain in recent memory, the biggest challenge of the day was dust. In the 50cc 4-6 class, Wisconsin’s Brooks Laubmeier completed more laps than anyone and brought home the win over Iowa’s Kellon Drone. Two fast little Illinois girls
held their own against the boys though, as Cassie Fairfield and Kayten Toal finished 3-4. In 50cc 7-8, Cooper Lair, out of Alexis, IL, took the win by two minutes over Minnesota’s Tatum Swygman. Braxton Jacobson, a Wisconsin native, finished third. In the 65cc class, Walker Garetson took the win on his Husqvarna. One minute back finished Austin Burns, who had another three minutes over third place Boede Wallner. Reagn Doerr stood atop the allIllinois podium in the 85cc class, along with taking the overall win in the morning mini event. Second place was Cole Morgan and ahead of Ayden White. Camryn Horbaty, out of Tyndall, Manitoba, Canada brought home the Women’s class win. Wisconsin’s Autumn Czappa finished second ahead of WFO Promotions’ Women’s class points leader Ashley Toal. In 98-200C, Kyle Walker edged out Jhak Walker for the win. Dominik Gaylord finished third. Trevor Keogh took the win in the Open C class by over six minutes over Wisconsin natives Kory Blake and Carson Hosking. The main race of the afternoon was slated to be a competitive one. In the AA class, Minnesota’s Nate Ferderer made a huge effort for second place.

there were twenty-one pros from four surrounding states fighting for the top spot. When the green flag raised, it was Wisconsin’s JD Friebel with the holeshot but by the time they hit the timber, Minnesota’s Nick Swenson took over the top spot. With nearly dead last starts for Border Battle XC title contenders Logan Kittock and Nate Ferderer, they had their work cut out for them as they tried to dissect their way through the pack in the dust. By the end of lap one, top Illinois rider Tanner Whipple found himself in second, chasing Swenson. On the beginning of lap two, Swenson tucked the front end on the motocross track, handing the lead over to Whipple. Whipple spent the rest of the race controlling the top spot with no pressure from behind. Ferderer fought his way through the deep field but ran out of time. Whipple took the win
by just over a minute ahead of Minnesota’s Ferderer. Yamaha mounted Colt Converse would rebound from a mediocre start to take the final spot on the podium. Friebel rode solid and consistent all day to bring home fourth overall and Matt McDonald, aboard a brand new KTM took fifth. Overall A went to Husqvarna rider Rylan Frankford, who won Open A. Benjamin Schmidt edged out Easton Morgan for second in class. Open B was won by Michael Burtle ahead of Gavin Minnaert and Jayson Crawford. Full House at Xmas MX Christmas, Michigan - August 3/4 By Jeri Nyberg
S
ometimes you just get the sense that it’s going to be a big weekend at a race track, and the buzz leading up to Xmas Motorsports Park’s double header event gave just that feeling. Campers started rolling into the facility Wednesday evening and by Friday night there was hardly a seat left in the house. With its prime location just minutes away from swimming in Lake Superior, great restaurants, sight-seeing, and Au Train River bridge jumping, there’s not a better way to spend a weekend in Upper Michigan. John Anetsberger and crew again delivered a well prepped track and facility for the event. Each trip back to the Xmas facility there are improvements being made. This time spectators were treated to a covered terrace over the concession area, making it a great spot to watch the racing action. The race weekend was even more hyped up by all the incentives and prizes being put up by local sponsors and different motorsports companies. Friday afternoon’s open practice gave
racers a chance to get a feel for the track before the racing began for the weekend. Saturday morning’s fog was quickly burned off as the sun rose higher in the sky. Rider entries totaled amazing 294, a promising number for any track to see. The day that consisted of 22 motos got under way, and racers were eagerly awaiting their turn to hit the track. Half way through the race order, 250B rolled onto the gate alongside 250A. The A riders dropped first leaving B to wait for the thirty second board to again turn sideways and when it did Bodie Diehl of Commerce Township, MI put his KTM out front. Close behind was Trevor Edwards followed by Tyler Archambault. As lap two began, the racing began to intensity. Edwards pushed hard to find a way around Diehl and Archambault’s rear view mirror was full of the Yamaha of Haiden Waelchli. Not far behind the top four was Brock Noreen. The battle between Archambault and Waelchli continued until Waelchli was able to make the pass stick at the beginning of lap four. At the end of the lap, the racing just outside the top five started to heat up.
Tristin Woolf, who had been running a solid sixth place, was starting to feel the pressure from the KTMs of Rocco Gravedoni and Anthony Lindholm who had been pushing their way forward the entire moto. They were trying any lines possible to make their way around, and Gravedoni was able to make the pass in one of the track’s split sections. The last lap neared its end, when Gravedoni slid out in a corner letting both Woolf and Lindholm past. Woolf held onto sixth place at the end of the moto. The gate dropped for moto two and Diehl again pulled holeshot, putting himself out front for the entire race. Different from moto one was the absence of Edwards. Noreen and Archambault rounded out the top three to complete lap one, but Waelchli was going to change that on lap two. Waelchli was right on the two when Archambault went down and Waelchli began to work on getting around Noreen. Diehl had opened up a nice gap on the field by lap three and Waelchli was able to make his move on Noreen. Archambault worked his way back into the top five and at the end of lap three. The top three started to pull away, and

Gravedoni was chasing down and passed Woolf to break into the top 5. When the checkers flew, Noreen crossed the line in third place resulting in a third place finish for the day. Woolf’s 6-6 landed him in fifth. After a long day of racing on Saturday, everyone was treated to a spectacular fire-
works show put on by Cory Augustine with help from a few others. Racing on Sunday morning quickly got under way to help make sure those who had travelled the distance were home in a timely manner. The 85 Open 9-13 class featured riders from Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The Illi-

nois rider, Leo Tucker pulled a big holeshot and quickly opened up a large lead on the field. Hayden Schumacher ran in second off the start and held position for the entire moto. Behind, the field did lots of position swapping. Lance Torp held third off the holeshot, but was feeling the pressure from Ethan Ebben, with Ebben finally making the pass. Jace Miller then made his way up to Torp and the two drag raced up the uphill with Miller taking over position. Miller set his sights on Ebben in third place and soon completed that pass. While Miller and Ebben had been battling, William Tucker snuck his way to the top five. The order would again shake up during the final lap as Ebben was able to real Miller back in and make the pass out of the woods section. Ebben finished the moto in third. Moto two began with William Tucker out front, just edging out Leo Tucker, but by the end of lap one Leo had again put his KTM out front. Ebben ran in third, just ahead of Miller and Schumacher. Schumacher got around Miller, then ran on Ebben’s heels, pushing the two forward and they began to catch W. Tucker. The highlight of moto two was undoubtedly the racing that was going on between William Tucker and Ebben. The boys were fighting hard for second place almost the entire race. Tucker was able to finish the moto in second, but Ebben’s 3-3 finishes put him in second overall. The class that lets almost all ages mix it up on the track is 125 Open, and it seems to be growing in popularity each race weekend. It really shows how fast the 125JR riders are into perspective when they line up with the those who happen to be A and B riders. Moto one had one of the young guns, Hayden Waelchli grab an early lead ahead of the field. Running just behind, John Vandezande had Kyle Hameister a few bike lengths back after he had made his way past Marshall Busse. Busse went down during lap two allowing Vince Hughes into fourth. At the front of the pack the top three started to break away, and Vandezande was trying to gain on Waelchli. During the final lap, Matthew Aho worked his way up to Hughes’ back tire, putting the pressure on to take over fourth place. The two went into the final woods section side by side, and Aho exited in front to finish the moto in fourth place. I
t’s mid July and a great crowd turns out once again for stadium motocross at Joliet’s facility, despite the heat and it being one of the few Friday night races of the year. The crew always try to throw in a couple of Friday nights on the chance that someone might be able to visit the park that would not otherwise be able to. All the riders enjoy a great practice and the track is as dry as it has been on a race night in a long time. After the prayer blessing and the National anthem the heat races begin. In the 65 beginner class Phoenix Uthe struggled in the heat race, but came back to win the main followed by Nicholas Brooknan and Eddie Martens. The Open C class had battles from front to back in both the heat and mains. Skyler Williams won the main followed by a hard charging Dominic Wyrot in second with Eric Siebert getting on the podium. Ashleigh Newmaker won the Women’s class followed by Kaylor Speirer. It’s been Blake Patterson dominating in the 85 beginner class this year at Joliet. Patterson won both his motos as second place went to a hard riding Jack Cerutti. 250A and B had small classes but some amazing racing. Brian White barely holeshot in front of Gavin Sienkiewicz and they rode less than a second apart every lap in both the heat and the mains. Hunter Billingsley got the holeshot in 250B and won with Nolan Thompson not far behind. Tanner Haddon out of Wilmington won the 65Sr class over Konrad Zabek. In 65Jr it was Satas Vauspas out of Naperville getting the holeshot and a commanding win with Jax Ellul in second and Tom Luberda third. In 85Jr Tanner Haddon would holeshot, checkout and win both the heat and the main. While Christopher Garza and Hudson Cook battled for second before Garza locked it in. Leland Anderson is having a great year and he came out on top in the 50Jr class. Lincoln Paxton struggle and went down in the 50 Sr heat, but bounced back to take the win in the main. Taking second was Remington Rinker followed by Jesse James. 250C was the biggest class of the night. Jack Sparks ran off the win in the heat race but Skyler Williams dominated in the main. Drake Brummel out of Plainfield rode hard to a solid third place with Eric Siebert, Dominik Wyrot rounding out the top five.

Quinn Persists at Spring Creek Millville, Minnesota - August 11 By Rolfe Otterness
M
ike Quinn (Sr.) took the win in one of the toughest classes as Spring Creek Park hosted yet another summer motocross event. To win in the 70+ class means you are one of the toughest hombres around and you have beaten down the meanest competitor around... Time! We young pups salute you,
Mighty Quinn! When most have abandoned their bikes for the easy chair you are still out there pounding laps! Some younger but still tough motoheads also had a great day at this late summer round of the series. Wyatt McGrath burned up the track in 85cc 12-15 and Supermini. Leighton Oswald cleaned up on the mini track with wins in 50cc Oil Injected 4-8 and 50cc Multi Speed 4-8. Kai Morgan took two in the 65cc classes on the big track. In

the big bikes classes, Luke Geis, Cameron Skaalerud and Josh Boaz all managed to snare two overalls. Thanks to some overnight rain the track was pretty slimy for the riders in the earlier motos but since Johnny M. had the track crew pack the dirt the night before it was at least rideable. With the uncertainty of the conditions considered the rider turnout of 500 entries was quite respectable. By the later motos the track shaped up really well. Dalton Hein managed to finagle a nice holeshot in the first moto of the 14-24B class but Cameron Skaalerud slingshotted by to lead in short order. Skaalerud had the edge on the rest of the pack and sped off as Hein held onto second with a firm grasp, holding off a challenge from Levi Dertien. Aleck Frasson and Owen Hoppe snapped up fourth and fifth. Skaalerud blasted through turn one at the head of the pack and took off in the second moto. Hein settled into second again and held on all the way with Frasson a bit behind. Skaalerud crossed the line as the checkered flew, a good bit ahead of Hein. Frasson, Dertien and Hoppe next in line and spaced apart a bit. Daulton Schoon led early as the Open C class went to battle. Anthony Osman was able to challenge and also had Jaden Rolbiecki not too far back. Osman maintained pressure and finally was able to slip into the lead on the last lap and put a bit of real estate between himself and Schoon, who found Rolbiecki right on his tail for the last portion of the lap. Andrew Clark and Brock Ritt pulled in for fourth and fifth. Clark jumped out to lead for a bit in the second moto while Schoon and Osman were mixing it up. Ritt crashed out in spectacular fashion over a double in the back section to finish off his moto on lap one but was not injured in a major way. Schoon and Osman were battling at a pace which Clark couldn’t maintain and they were shortly out front while Clark found Rolbiecki soon coming up to challenge him. Schoon took the win with Osman just behind him. Rolbiecki snared third from Clark on the last lap and fifth went to Alex Rasmussen. The 65cc 7-11 class turned out to be the Kai Morgan Show. He blasted out to early leads in both motos and romped to two wins. Kyler Hagedorn ran a pretty solid pace too and pulled off two second-place finishes while James Schaffer, Wyatt Nied-
feldt and Carson Wittman were amazingly consistent to finish 3-4-5 to preserve absolute ease of scoring for the overall. Brent Mason shot through turn one to lead the +35A class pack as they powered into moto one. Jared Lewis was on the move though and shortly took the lead from Mason. Jack Lorr dispatched with Jed O’connor on the second lap to take over third. The top four were set then for the duration and Matt Dohrn popped up in fifth as the moto ended. O’Connor made his move for domination as he holeshotted moto two. It didn’t quite work out as intended and Lewis and Lorr zapped him before the end of lap one, but it was a good try. Lewis checked out for a big lead by the time the moto ended, as there was a great battle all the way to the
flag over second, third and fourth with Lorr, O’Conner and Dohrn all going at it! Marshall Bakken was back a bit to take fifth. T
he 2019, Wausau 525 - August - OH - Fest is in the books. A three day, great weekend of bike and quad racing. Friday and Saturday weather held up good, and Sunday morning had rain early. The Sunday race got in, but the TT track had to be modified to dry the race course and it worked. Starting with Friday they had Open bike

and quad classes with some very quality and competitive racing. One concern from last year was the 525 clay conditions. In past races they had experienced some dust conditions until late afternoon. The 525 crew put in a lot of effort and work to hydrate the clay, add some great Dust control and Stay Wet additives which really put the track into excellent shape, day and night. And special thanks to Steve Nace who spent a lot of time on the phone and came
to the track four days early to help get it into superior condition. Nace is one of the best in the business to set up a track and keep it set for the whole race. At Nine o’clock sharp the racing was complete and the band - Hyde produced a music concert second to none. It was enjoyed by all and completed a very entertaining evening - racing and music. Saturday was the center attraction for the weekend. Little old Wausau, had a Steve Nace/ AMA - All Star national flat track series race. In their short history of AMA racing, the 525 team was honored to have this caliper and level of racing. And the racing very much fit the billing. Open Singles Amateur, +40, Super Singles, 250 Amateur, Open Vintage, Hooligans, 450 Amateur, Top Quad and All Star Singles - All put on a great show and did it by 9:45 at night. A top quality show and something they want to do again next year. Sunday, we woke up to every promotors worst dirty word, heavy rain at 5:00 am. And, we had no help, due to high humidity, no wind or Sunshine. But with a combined effort, they took a beautiful laid out TT Track and redesigned it to the inside of the Oval and had to make a very short run to the jump. It dried out and it worked. Special thanks to the Rib Mountain Riders and Bill Bell. We had fifteen classes and
got them all in. This was a District 16 event, promoted by Rib Mountain Riders Club and the Wausau 525 Group. As a matter of fact, all weekend was very safe with very little down time with very few riders down. A long winter is on the horizon, but when that is over they will begin to groom and get

Mudder of a day at Azzie Lake Mills, Wisconsin - August 11 By Jason Friberg, photos by June Shaw
I
'm starting to think maybe weekends are for rain. Although Saturday night for the Twilight races was perfect. We have had a lot of rain this year, but that hasn't stopped much racing at Aztalan. The mud was deep but the weather was perfect. The sloppy mess made for some solid yet difficult racing. Saturday night’s Pit Bike class was intense. Brian and Dan Peterson had a solid battle through both races. Brian ended up taking the win in Sixteen and over going 11, with a whopping twenty-three entries. These night races there are pretty new to Aztalan and I think it's a good opportunity for the people just beginning or who have limited weekend time. Also it's pretty cool to race under the lights. It gives it that “Lake Geneva” vibe that many of us miss. On Sunday, watching the kids through the tough conditions was probably my favorite part of the day. Its rad seeing these

kids push so hard through it. Saw a few get Twenty-three entries the battles were instuck, but they never give up. That’s really tense. My big standout on the day for this what matters - these kids have so much class was Dustyn Kumba. His starts were heart. Riley Busse was on it, its unreal how fast that kid is. Busse went 1-1 in new Mini Open class, absolutely dominating the field. Gavin Templin was second (after winning 12-15) followed by Zane Siminak (third in 12-15 as well). Busse still rides in the younger 9-11 class, so his wins in Mini Open are even more impressive. Busse in my opinion is one of the future stars of our sport. Hands down my favorite kid to watch on a dirt bike. 250C was also a fun class to watch. With Marshall Sellek pushing hard in Mini Open.

on point in both motos. Kumba had a huge get off at the pro-am a couple months ago, and it was really good to see him back at this race. Kumba went 11-12 for an eleventh overall on the day. I had a chance to catch up with Kumba after, “I had a pretty solid day surprisingly after not riding for two months. I felt my starts were decent and ran mid pack gaining and losing some ground in both Open and 250C. I’m just happy to finish the race upright and hang out with my friends and enjoy the atmosphere. The morning was a little sloppy with all the rain. The Aztalan crew did a great job on keeping the track in good shape. I just tried to pick the driest lines, not get roosted and not fall over. The track really worked in nice.” The battles at the front were pretty solid. With how deep the ruts were and how muddy some spots were, it was a struggle for a lot of riders Dustin Erickson took the win going 1-1 followed by Shawn Haus (22) and Zaiden Zigmund rounding out the top three (3-3).

Megacross - Great River Shootout Mendota, Illinois - August 17 Photos by Nick Smith
S
ummer is over, after a 4 week hot spell temps in the 70's and cloudy skies returned to Megacross keeping the water crew at bay til last minute anticipating the on coming down pour which hit all around the area. This would eventually lead to clear skies, hot sun for two hours and some dry and hard conditions. This is Stadium racing, it is the way it works and riders from the newly revived Great River Series weren’t going to let less than prime conditions spoil their race night. Krysten Janik and his Team Green Kaw found some local competition that wasn't going to just let him run away and hide -
they wanted to play too. We watched some of the fastest kids around bang laps in both 85Sr and SuperMini. Lucas Geistler (Rides Unlimited) has been eating his wheaties lately and put some solid laps in to keep Janik honest in the 85's. Janik wasn't playing too long and Geistler settled into second. These two returned later in the evening with some added flair. Charlie Ravencroft with his bark busters and Landon Lee who has been the local kid doing well battled just like they do in the timbers, not real close to the national kids, but keeping them in sight for a solid 3rd and 4th ride. Wesley Johnson was back this race to finish fifth. A few motos later SuperMini lined up, with Talon Zollers in the mix. As he gets

to the point of aging out and soon sizing out of the Super Mini's he wasn't going to be denied some spotlight time with the Geistler/ Janik racing antics. Zollers known more for his stadium racing showed a wheel to Geistler and those two had an excellent race in the heat and the main. Janik in the hunt couldn't find a way around or simply sat back and watch those two battle, he had the best seat in the house! After Geistler took the win in the heat race, Zollers wasn't having it in the main. The proverbial "throw a blanket over them" statement could be said of these two. Some of the closest and best racing of the season was had with the Supermini class tonight. Traditionally, the Women's class has been smaller with so many different variations of
talent that racing is rarely as intense as its this season. been Known for her work at Muddy Waters, Kyleigh Mclaughlin is also known for her racing. Being more of a big track rider she shows up from time to time to test Emily Smith, Amber Logeland, Ashleigh Newmarker, Kaylor Speirer. This season she has hit the ground almost every moto, but tonight was different. Settling down a bit and not over riding the corners was the key to her success. Not to let this night just slip away Smith and Logeland made Mclaughlin earn her first win of the season. Smith pushed the eventual winner but this time no mistakes and the checkers flew. Notable mention, Morgan Wheelwright who in only her second ever Megacross event took her barkbuster KTM to fourth. Ten riders tonight, not bad at all. One of the first nights in a while that the C classes were both split, 250C down on turn out with it's 19 riders made for some interesting racing. The normal suspects were in the hunt; Carmichael, Williams, Heyde, and Jack Sparks. After about three years off a dirt bike Shane Reilly decided

to come hang out with dad Chris and ride Megacross again. Realize that Reilly has laps on this track on a crf50 10-11 years ago and rarely missed an event. Surrounded by the unfamiliar (to him) sound of 4 strokes his little ole 125 was screaming for mercy trying to keep up. Carmichael tried to run off and hide as he has done many times this season but Williams, Reilly, weren't having it. Right there as well Heyde and Sparks. . Concerns were running high this night as Chad Johnson had a major miscue on the
back table top, he hit pretty hard and went to the hospital this night, not something that gets written about in stories but anyone that was there and seen it should know (through social media) we found out the next day that he is home and recovering. This is the third time in three years he has had a big get off. We all wish him a speedy recovery. Notable mentions on the night. Rylan Hofmaster continues to set his pace face and is the kid to beat in the younger 50cc classes. In fact he was so ready to pounce

he left the line with the wrong class in his Main, stopped in the first turn realizing his mistake and waited til all the riders passed him before he continued. The end of the first lap he was in the lead looking for 50cc Sr kids to pass. Eric Wheelwright (Morgan's dad) hillclimber, Gran prix, Hare Scramble and now a Megacross racer found his way around Kevin Lee (Lee Excavat-
ing) in the 40B/C class for the win. He might not be able hang all the big jumps but his corner speed kept him at the front. Fair night at Megacross will be long over by the time you read this story, but the night before the AMA District 17 State Motocross Championship will be the next race up at Megacross for D17 Sx Bonus points. Sounds like a large group of Stadium riders

Great weekend in Hixton! Hixton, Wisconsin - July 28 by Doug Forstner Photos by Kaila Forstner
W
hen I got word that Hixton MX was back on the map for District 16, I was pretty excited to say the least as it is one of my favorite old school tracks here in Wisconsin. As turnouts for events are down across the country, promoters are trying to find ways to get the racers to the tracks. In years past as numbers dwindled combined with poor timing of mother-nature, increasing costs, etc., numbers basically went in the tank for this motocross event, so the promoters took a year off to regroup and that was a tough pill to swallow considering that CMJ crew has been hosting mx races at the facility since 1989. Fast forward to 2019 and looking at the Cycle USA event guide for District 16 on the weekend of the mx race also showed a GP on Saturday and a Harescramble on Sunday as well. Was it a misprint? How can the CMJ race crew pull off such a monumental task? We showed up Friday night at the track and believe it or not, word spread and couldn’t believe the amount of people pulling into the facility. Parking became an issue quickly which if you believe the cup is half full, you would say that is a good problem to have. The mix of motocrossers tightly pitted next to woods guys was pretty cool and they were packing them in like cord wood for the winter. With my old age increasing each year, I was trying to remember the last time I tried a harescramble or GP race around the campfire Friday night, of course I couldn’t remember, so for fun signed up to race the GP on Saturday along with motocross on 32

Sunday, figuring what the heck. The GP course outlined the whole upper pit area and I thought geez this looks pretty simple, combined with some woods and moto we should be good. A last minute decision to eliminate the mx track for Saturday’s GP in order to keep it mint for Sunday’s racing threw a wrench in my plans. The good news was I got to sleep in Saturday morn-
tinted goggles sarcastically, you go with the suggestion of clear. Every once in a while, the track would skirt out into some sunlight and I would give myself a pat on the back but soon we would be back in the dark and my vision was foggy at best. About half way through the first lap, we went through a small muddy section followed up by a tree root infested uphill that decided to pitch my rear wheel completely sideways smack dab into a solid tree that for some reason didn’t move when I hit it. At this point, I was really questioning myself on why I was out there. After a bit, I composed myself, adjusted my bars and levers back into position, took a deep breath and took back after the pack. For the rest of the 30 minute race I was able to avoid all the logs, rocks, trees, and death traps to successfully finish. It didn’t matter what place I had gotten, I was just happy to finish. Looking back on it, I had a blast and those GP races are a combination of moto and Mason Kubis won the Saturday 85cc GP class. woods which is what we all want as riders, more seat time. ing as the relaxed atmosphere for the GP is Sunday morning rolled around and more pretty cool. My out to the lead after Gage Neubauer slid out game plan was to go out and get some ride in turn one giving the lead to Knoch who time in without hurting myself. Well, as eventually took moto one win over Kayleb soon as we hit the first downhill in the Pilman, Kevin Gollubske, Dustin Erickson, woods I knew I was in trouble as I was and Luke Vanlyssel who rounded out the wearing tinted lenses and couldn’t see top five. Moto two looked like it would be much. Note to self, when your daughter a repeat of moto one with the early leaders asks you three times are you sure you want
up front, however, as things panned out throughout the moto, it would be Pilman on his mighty YZ125 with the win and his 2-1 gave him the overall as well. Gollubske was a solid third in the moto and his 3-3 consistent scores netted him second overall. Vanlyssel put things together with a second in the moto and his 5-2 gave him third overall. Knoch would finish 6th for fourth just ahead of Erickson who went 4-4 for fifth. 250C was similar as it had the largest turnout on the day. Josh Becker went 1-2 for the overall beating Vanlyssel’s 3-1 moto scores. Knoch was consistent going 2-3 for third ahead of Erickson in fourth and Levi Laporte rounding out the top five. Two Stroke B/C class has had its fair share of good battles this summer and today was no exception. Jake Hunger from Amherst, WI took second in moto one behind Tristin Woolf. I spoke to Woolf after the moto and he was happy to get the hard earned win. Woolf had never been to the track and liked the fact that it was so technical, from the uphill whoops, to clay on one side of
Open C first moto start
the mountain and complete sand on the other side. Nick Jacobson took third place followed by Duke Crook and Justin Hierlmeier. In moto two, Hunger got into the lead and ended up with the win and the overall and that’s impressive considering he’s on a 125 and 2nd and 3rd place were on 250’s. Jacobson was a solid second place in the moto and his 3-2 was good for third behind Woolf. Hierlmeier moved up a spot into fourth and that gave him fourth overall. Crook went 4-7 for fifth. Trevor Trachte and Jake Luchini were both right there in the mix just outside the top five in the overall standings but put on some fine racing. +40B/C saw some old school guys take to the track and I talked to Andy Walters who hadn’t been there in years. He said it was fun and challenging just like it was in the old days when he raced there. The CMJ crew really had the flow down with some of the track changes and it made racing pretty awesome. Of course the signature obstacle, the famous uphill whoop section is still there and is as technical as ever. Jason
Judd Koenitzer is always happy to be at a race
Boebel had the course dialed and he won both motos for the win. Walters went 2-2 for second ahead of Jeff Oakes. Guy Rex had a better second moto and his 6-4 scores netted him fourth overall just ahead of Mark Jorgensen (7-5). Early numbers showed over a 100% increase in turnout for mx compared to 2017. Total numbers for the weekend were almost 300 entries. MX racing efficiently wrapped up with motos by 2:30 in the afternoon and the harescrambles weren’t far behind giving everyone plenty of time to hit the road home. To be able to put on three events in a two day timetable, only one word came to mind – multitasking! The CMJ crew pulled it off and to my knowledge everyone left with a smile on their face. innesota flat track legend Billy Hofmeister came out of retirement and attended the dual District D23/ D16 event held at the high banks of Mississippi Thunder Speedway, hosted by the Shadow Valley Drifters where he won the Open Twin main event proving that age will prevail over treachery every time. When asked about his return to racing Hofmeister said, “It’s a lot more fun because there’s no pressure, I was just having fun! Lee Wickstrom had the bike running so good I had to show it off!” Hofmeister took the Lee’s Speed Shop sponsored Harley Davidson to the lead at the start of Open Twin main event and had Eric Dietz hot on his tail throughout the race as the 36

Josh Samuelson, Mark Harris, Mike Schmidt and Peter Monson rounded out the field. The event also had an evening show for the spectators that featured round five of the Grand National Hooligan Championship series, a Hooligan Dash for Cash and a Pro Singles race. In the Pro Singles Main event Minnesota’s Jake Mataya put his GoMoto sponsored Honda 450 out front at the start, but was passed a couple laps later by AFT Singles top gunner Morgan Mischler. The dicing duo broke away from the rest of the field to finish very closely in that order. Parker Lange and Brock Schwarzenbacher who are also regulars on the AFT circuit finished a not so distant third and fourth. The Milwaukee Harley-Davidson/ Fuel Café backed Mischler was gracious to his sponsors, “I can’t thank the people that assist my program enough, and make my life easier!” The event was a good tune up for Danny Mischler and Jj Flairty, both of them are headed for the upcoming X Games in Minneapolis and both are previous gold medal winners in the Hooligan division. The Mischler H-D/ BMW sponsored Danny Mischler won the Dash for Cash, but in the GNHC Main event Jj Flairty came out on top of a very close battle ahead of the defending X-Game gold medalist. “I battled with the champ (Mischler) all night and it was a lot of fun,” explained Flairty. “This was my first GNHC racing win of the season and my first car track win ever; I was

Bacon-N-Hops Trials Manchester, Iowa - August 3 By Doug Hay, Photos by Jill Kopacek
M
anchester, Iowa hosted a trials event for the third consecutive year. The Mayor of Manchester greeted the riders, saying he and the city loved having us there. How many dirt bike riders have ever heard that? The event takes place on the banks of a river that runs right through the middle of town. The Bacon-N-Hops festival shared the river with us and provided many spectators. There was even a wedding party taking pictures 50’ from one of our sections. It was HOT, almost 90 degrees, but you could cool off in the river any time. All the sections were within walking distance of each other making this the most spectator friendly event of the year. Sections 4-6 were on the large rocks guarding the river. At first look most riders said, “No way I am going to go up that”. But once

you see someone else climb the rocks, you realize the traction is very good. The other sections were mostly loose smaller rocks that shift as you ride over them. NATC #1 Pro Pat Smage was on hand riding the Championship class. Hugh Hadfield said, “It’s like Tiger Woods showing up and he’s playing the ladies tees”. Smage dropped only three points the entire day, all of them on section #5. No other rider had less than nine points on this section. Will Check created this section, congratulations Will, you got him! Jason Waldo took second with 51 points. Check was third and Pat’s older brother David Smage was fourth. Mitchel Littlefield was in a three way tie for the lead after one loop of the Expert class. Then he got serious and laid down loops of 4 and 5 points to take the win. Keith Johnson took second on a (party like it’s) 1999 Sherco. Noel Smage took a day
off from Soy Bean farming to grab the final spot on the podium. Wade Murphy-Price has been very consistent all year, and that finally paid off, as he won the Advanced class by two points over Eric Reno. Reno lost five points by having a missing score on his scorecard, which cost him the win. Doug Hay was third, one point behind Reno. Jake Walker was another point back and Rob Walters another back of Walker. So that’s 32, 34, 35, 36 and 37 for the top five. Every point counts. Kurt Muente had complete control of the Intermediate class. His loop scores were 3, 2, 4 for nine points total. Spencer Stone took second, six points behind, his best finish ever. He had a three point final loop but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. Mark Misek had loops of 11, 2, 4 – so that first loop cost him, but he got on the podium with seventeen points. Adam Gustafson

finished off the podium in fourth, that doesn’t happen very often. Rick Ness put in three solid loops to round out the top five in the thirteen rider class. Muskego, Wisconsin rider Steve Schmidt finally got that first Novice class win. Schmidt had just two marks on his scorecard, two 2’s. Ben Ezell had a one and a five, he actually crashed away the win. Third place was Kevin Ingold with loops of 3 ,7, 1. Connor Todd had loops of 13, 5, 1 which showed he got the hang of those rocks quickly. In the Vintage class, Pat Doll rode an old Fantic to the win with eight points. Derek Lange had a two point lead starting the third loop, but Doll had just one point the loop and Lange had four, his worst of the day. Glen Fuegen got better each loop with 16, 6, 2 scores to finish ahead of Kevin Huber. The +50 class had Ralph Littlefield ride like an old school trials rider, he never exceeds two mph. He crawled up these steep rocks and ledges slower than an old lady on her way to the Goodwill store. You would have to see it to believe it. That control led him to a score of twenty-seven, winning by fourteen points over Richard Passman and the winner of the Gilbert, Minnesota National Hugh Hadfield. Two Women rode the event with Abby Fuegen taking the win with just two points. Kelsey Boardman took just one more point the first loop, then matched Abby in loops 2 and 3. This is Kelsey’s first season so watch for her in the future! The Youth class had seven entries so winning would be tough. Ivan Misek and Will Loer ended up tied with twelve points. Misek won the tie breaker eight cleans. Veronica Misek continued her fabulous season with another podium finish. Kaspar Tibor ended up fourth and Ahmet Kimball was fifth. I think all five riders were on electric bikes. Our last event of the season is Mauston, WI on September 14th and 15th. Ron Bean Memorial Race

A
ztalan Cycle Club and the Super Senior Class in particular celebrated the seventh annual Ron Bean Memorial race Saturday night. Twelve riders, 50 years and older, honored the memory of the four time Super Senior Champion Ron Bean, who passed away of cancer in 2012. Two heats set the stage for the main event, to which the winner would add his/ her name to the Ron Bean traveling trophy. Heat one, #12 Mike Yogerst was off the line first. Going into turn one he and #73 Steve Wasser, were side by side. Wasser pulled ahead down the back stretch. Lap two brought mishap for Wasser as he slid out between turns three and four in front of Yogerst. Getting around safely, Yogerst went on to win. Heat two, #99 Jim Kirschbaum wheelied off the line halfway to turn one! He took a commanding lead immediately and won the heat. As the main event lined up, Chuck Dickerson’s bike smoking heavily was removed from the race. At the green light, #54 John Hanson was across the line first followed by Kirschbaum. By turn two Kirschbaum was out front with Wasser in second, who shot up from the back starting row. By the end of the second lap, all the riders had settled into positions with no further change. The checkered flag went to Kirschbaum, 40

with Brent Grasser in third behind Wasser. Pat Bean, son of Ron, presented the traveling trophy to repeat winner Kirschbaum! Congratulations Jim! There was a good solid night full of great racing in pretty much every class. Action kicked off with a ten rider final for the +60 class, and Chuck Calvert took control right away. Off the line Calvert carried the front wheel off the ground right into turn one and then use the rest of the race to slowly gap
the field. Larry Pettis shot into second early with John Hanson sticking to him. Julia Hanson was in fourth right up to the checkered flag where Michael Grieff used an aggressive outside line through turn three and four to make a hard run payoff as he snatched the position away by just inches. Not sure why, but tonight was one filled with youth riders - a very welcome site. Twelve of the little riders left the line in the 50cc Shaft class... that’s a lot of little blue Yamahas ripping around the track! Preston Nimz made the trip from Wausau a good one as he led every lap to take home that nice first place trophy. Mason Nockerts, Milez Nelson, Oliver Wick and Jaxson Peters quickly settled into the top five spots and finished their laps in that same order. There wasn't much position swapping in the 250cc class, but the close racing kept everyone’s attention. Cole Andresen got a great jump from the middle of the starting line to just edge Vincent Jung in turn one. Ethan Rosine used a nice line in turn one and two to grab third ahead of Isabelle Andresen. Starts proved to be everything tonight as Cole out front spent the entire race having to pick smart lines to hold onto the lead - as did Rosine in third. The two separate battles lasted right to the finish line as Jack Freeman had a great view of it all from fifth in the ten rider main. Preston Nimz got a good jump in the
Loyal Prach and #20 Emmett Sund battle in the fast Open class.
65cc class and led everyone out of turn two. Having nothing to do with settling into second place, Jack Brucks held the throttle on going into turn three and simply ran around the outside with a full commitment. Out of turn four he shot into the lead and then continued his push all the way to the win. Brucks after, “The race went good. I tried to stuff it in and get around everyone right away. Coming into and out of the corners was good and I just wanted to hold on to the lead.” Brucks was all smiles and having fun after winning, what else could you expect. Nimz held strong in second despite some serious efforts behind him from Mason Nockerts and Lewis Wetzel. The Open A class saw some really close racing in the heat races so it was expected to be a great main event - and it was. Corton Vandezande lives right here in Lake Mills, and defended his home turf well. With a very fast group coming off the line, he edged the inside for the lead out of turn two. Patrick Tatar was glued to his rear wheel through the first lap and the battle over third was a three rider affair that couldn’t be determined from the sidelines. By the third lap it became apparent that Ezra Brusky wasn’t at all content with fourth place. He first went around Cody Reifsnider, bringing Emmet Sund with him. With time running out he pulled another full on effort on the outside to swing by Tratar at the white flag, taking over second. He closed on Vandezande during that final lap to no avail... the win was all local boy Vandezande’s! It was a great race for sure. Vandezande, “I basically was out front and able to run my own race. When the white flag came out I knew I was almost there for the win. The track is really good and the bike was working well. The moisture is coming up and the track just keeps getting better.” The “old” bike classes are always popular with riders... and spectators. Who doesn’t like the sound of old bike thundering around the track? Often ridden by riders still wearing full leather - some of the suits dating right back to when the bikes were

aturday morning rumor was there had been a little building going on, as the riders started checking out the Gp course they came upon what many said was a "rickety" old bridge. That was until Steve Perkins and Casey Shatters rode across it, jumped on it and said "good to go". Anyone that knows those two, they know why even the Corp of Engineers would certify those test conditions. Running the timber in reverse makes it the "wrong" way to run the lower track at Fox Valley, which is difficult to do so this little bridge idea for this event helped make the track flow better. Gp racing Saturdays has become pretty popular. Kicking off the race day was the Open class and +30A,B/C classes. The normal hot rods Blake Ryan and Garrett Ward were going to battle like usual. This weekend Jarred Hall from Hall's Cycles was hanging out, and add in Kevin Halloran, Nick Balzer, and Alex Grunder for some nice competition in the "Open" class. 42
CYCLE USA, September 2019
Ryan pulled his patented holeshot, with little Ward in tow, followed by Hall, and Halloran. Some where out back Ryan made a mistake and Ward passed to win the moto. Big news was something weird happened and Gran Prix director/ Tri-City president Balzer was in the middle of it. Some how a barrel got dislodged from it's perch by the railing on the bridge and landed on his handlebars (like he was trying to catch it). Well on the ground he went, and then came the temper. Spectators say he should become a place kicker as the plastic barrel went flying... So we all got to talk about that escapade for the rest of the day. While this was all going on 30A was out at the same time with some really fast "older" guys. New to the mix was Jumpin Joey Brewer! In his first ever Gran Prix, son Brody had rode them now for two years but dad has been sitting back and watching. Ryan Moss came out and played this day as did Ryan Smith. The two had a good battle but in the second motos the dust was getting bad in the upper field so less inten-
50Jr rider Robert Johnson.
sity and more survival mode was the play of the day. Bryce Olson and Peter Kavsky had some good racing as well, Olson never missing an opportunity to whip the bike sideways on a jump, after awhile one would think the extra work would be tiring. Today he held on both motos for well deserved wins. Jarred Hall won the Vintage class which has now been named pre-modern, no matter his completely built from parts 125 Cagiva was singing the songs of the small smokers. He won his motos. Jaramie Brown riding his older Maico somehow kept it going and pulled seconds both times as well. Erik Smith finished third on his purple Yamaha! +50A and B/C are run separate now, but the old boys can still get around the track and have a blast running it in on each other. This Stacey Stewart dude from southern IL is been having his way with the 50A class this season. He got good holeshots and wase gone. This month Dj Ryan (Blake’s dad) and Paul Fabrizius were chasing him with no avail.
+50B/C has top riders who have battled all season long. Kevin Lee, Jay Porter and Dan Kickbusch have traded paint and positions. Porter with the edge in the woods, Lee with the edge at the Sx style racing. This day no different. Dj Parks put in his bid but found out the time off this spring cost him some needed speed. Kids classes on Gp day are a blend of 65's 85's/ Superminis. In the 85 class, twelve riders were ready to battle and the usual suspects were on hand. Ayden White and Landon Lee were ready to bang out the laps. Charlie Ravencroft was back to not let any slackin happen! Zach Jensen was reving his yamadog to the moon as usual and banging laps with Ravencroft. Lee usually has the upper hand but lately mistakes have cost him. White this day knew to take advantage of this and went 2-1 to win the overall.
AA class rider Greg Rogers finished sixth.
A new/ old player in the A class was getting use to his new ride and it showed. Ryan Smith who was also pounding laps in 30A decided today was a good day to play with the kids. Normally Blake Ryan and Garrett Ward run away and hide, but today Smith worked into the mix. Ward won the first moto but Smith pushed by Ryan for second. In the final moto Ward and Ryan had their hands full. Smith hounded Ward and in the third lap Ward hammered down the straight knowing that Smith’s 450 will out power his 250 - then he missed the inside line on the last corner before they drop down the last hill. Smith thought this was Christmas, and simply rode by looking over at Ward. Smith won the overall in a well deserved ride. Special mentions Noah Lee won the B class as he settled down a bit and rode the conditions in front of him. Morgan Wheel-
wright continued to dominate the Women's class. All this and more happened and it was only Saturday. Sunday would see many things new and riders stepping up to take on the Hare Scrambles challenges. When a double header happens at Fox Valley there are many come and stay for the weekend, and this weekend was nothing short of perfect. Weather/ temps just made for a lot of fun and competition. There are two courses on race day Sunday. One that is long and has many obstacles, but so much was happening on the kids course that today we will focus a little on it. In 65 beginner today some where around three minute lap times, a little fast but these riders are learning how to navigate and keep consistent laps. Scott Creagan and Cooper Liar are just those kids. Drake Stanaland is right there too. Fox Valley offers these kids 40 minutes on the course so they get great ride time and learn stamina matters as well. Fourteen laps for Creagan, thirteen for Lair, Stanaland, and Bertuli. They finished in that order and shredded the course well. When these young guns are done, the 50cc classes compete on the same course. 50cc has fast kids and beginners almost split half and half. Seven riders in Sr and eight in Jr. Cooper Lair and Wyatt Johnson have been tearing it up over there but coming up through the pack from a second row start was Cassie Fairfield and Weston Sticha in the Jr class. Johnson kept Lair in check for a bit but every lap Lair added a few seconds and got away from him. Fairfield and Sticha along with Kayten Toal were going to make a statement as they are all Jr riders who have improved immensely this season and today it really showed. They all did nine laps to the Lair's eleven, sounds like a huge deal, but once you understand that two months ago they would only get in three or four. There is a whole different spectrum to this class as well. Davey Fairfield comes to mind, he started on his crf50 and now has stepped up to the 50Jr Husky. His abilities have improved all season. Davey is the smiley kid who always has an opinion, he shows this on this machine with persistence and makes sure he finishes. Robert Johnson gets the special, never give up hard charger award. He is a winner in everyone's opinion. Falling down continually, when a faster rider would bump him, or he simply didn't negotiate a turn or tree root correctly. He would fall, get up, CYCLE USA, September 2019

go again. No whimpering, no crying, just straight determination to finish racing his mini bike. This is where it starts, and where racers are born. Blink and it will be years later and he may be in AA developing into a role model for the new kids. So next up are the big bike old guys and C class riders in the morning big bike race. You know the experienced, +50A class who starts first and will lead the way on the course - knowing how to follow trail, read arrows and stay out of the tape. You know those guys. Not today. Most if not all the class except Stacey Stewart decided to go the wrong way, through the tape, backwards. The whole class lost a full minute by this miscue!
Over hearing a conversation after the race, "hey the tape might have been gone but the arrows didn't move!"... We won't name names, but the next thing you will do reading this is hunt the results for that information. Stewart had a lead which even the faster of the class couldn't overcome after their first lap mistakes. +50B/C, twenty riders on the line and some +60 guys mixed in there as well. Dj Parks showed the group around and was the proud winner of some nice Answer Gear for winning that class. Jay Porter and Jeff Phelps filled the podium, Ron Kettle held off Dan Kickbusch. +40C saw Tony Byrd rock the first lap before dropping to third on the second pass
Morgan Wheelwright ahead of Nate Metz in the 200C class.

through scoring. Greg Lesny took over the pole position and led the rest of the race. Breg Bubak kept Lesny close for a few laps but by end the 1.5 hours he was out of sight, Lesny was on his game this race Sunday. Alex Ashworth holeshotted his Open B class without much trouble, a couple times he hiccuped on the rock creek exit but his competitors had bigger issues there. Robert Bland went through scoring in sixth on the first lap, worked his way up to second after an hour and 45 minutes of charging. The top four riders were racing the entire race only seconds apart, one of the best races of the year. Cody Stewart, and Michael Burtle less then 10 seconds separated these up and coming riders. Speaking of Michael, his dad Tom who would normally ride +60, rode 40A so they can ride the same time of the day. Thomas found out that sometimes being ahead of any particular rider who hit his head just is a bad place to be. Casey Shatters (day before bridge tester) struck a tree pretty hard on the single track with Tom in front of him and whisky throttle in an area with no room to make a mistake took out Tom and himself in a grand fashion! Both are ok, but scary moment for the two, both being too old for that kind of activity. How could a story about any Hare Scramble race be told without mentioning the 30B class? The players in this all race like every weekend is a pro national. They do it with a ton of fun and a "hollywood'' presence that makes it even more enjoyable. This race only four of the eleven riders stayed on the lead lap, hollywood lost some traction late in the race due to a flat rear tire. Running 2nd most of that time, Drake Fairfield was on a mission this event and was not going to be denied a win. Two laps from the end Jeff "hollywood" Nelson got a rear flat. He hounded Drake only feel the sinking feeling of no air pressure in the rear tire. He pushed another lap before he had to call it a race... dropping to 5th and 2 weeks in a row tire issues have cost him valuable points in the 30B State Championship HS title race. AA class this race had a new rider as the younger Ward kid moved up to the class. Garrett won on home
turf but everyone knows straying away from home will make things more difficult. Quad A class has been a dog fight since the beginning of the season between Chris Breitwieser and Mickey Martin. The race ending two seconds apart! Mickey led early and then Chris got around for the win. Next event at Fox Valley Off Road is the WFO/FVOR combined race series event, this should be a real competitive and fun event. Not many miss this race and it's going to be a fun one, Sept. 28th and 29th.
