2016 AMA District 16 Event Guide
T
his guide is filled with a wide selection of great events, scheduled all across Wisconsin and Michigan’s UP, so dive in, and start making some plans. It doesn’t matter if you’re into dirt track, motocross, cruising on a big touring bike, catching a dual sport ride or whatever... this sport offers great memories just waiting to happen at every turn. Many of us have had the great fortune to grow up with this sport, and even after many years of riding and racing, we continue to look forward to the next trip as
much as ever. The riding is always a highlight, but just as enjoyable is time spent with all the wonderful people that participate and work to put the events on. There really isn’t a good way to explain the rewards of the friendship and camaraderie that you’ll find in this sport. We can only tell you that it is here waiting for you... so come on out, and get involved. Hopefully we’ll see you at the track, or in the woods this summer.

Going Racing with District 16 A s a rider, you must rely on your own judgment, and you assume all risks when participating in any type of motorcycle competition. Although all AMA-sanctioned meets are conducted under the guidelines established in the AMA rulebook and district supplemental rules, each club or promoter may operate a bit differently. There are several things you can expect regardless of where you race: *You must be a AMA member in good standing to compete in any type of AMA amateur competition. If you are not already a current AMA member, you may join at the facility on the day of an event, or by going to the AMA’s web site at www.americanmotorcyclist.com. Another good tip is to go to the membership services portion of the site, and check into the annual release, in particular for minor riders. Family members, look for the special rates that may be available to you. *You will be required to agree not to sue the AMA or the organizer, at each event you’ll be required to sign release statements. Minors often need additional release forms completed by both parents or guardians. Most events will require a parent or assigned guardian be present to enter the grounds as a spectator... best bet, contact the event promoter in advance if you have any doubts. *District registration will also be required. You will be able to join the district organization at the event as well. *All participants and spectators attending a race may be required to pay an admission fee upon entering the facility. Race participants also pay a registration or entry fee in addition to the admission fee. *All participants must wear a protective helmet, eye protection, gloves, a long-sleeve shirt, protective pants and boots that are at least
eight inches high. *It is your responsibility to know the rules. Become familiar with the AMA Rulebook. The AMA competition rulebooks are available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Go to www.americanmotorcyclist.com/racing/rules. District 16 may have some additional rules, and they can be found at www.amadistrict16.com The AMA is geographically divided into districts. A district organization is composed of enthusiasts like you, as well as clubs, promoters and elected district officials. District 16 covers Wisconsin, and Michigan’s UP. AMA District 16 has an abundance of motorcycling activity. The task of finalizing schedules, issuing racing numbers, and points keeping is handled at the district level, by volunteers. As a member of District 16 you may be issued a racing number if applicable, be eligible to earn points at events in which you participate, and have those points recorded for possible year-end awards. For a schedule of events in your area, refer www.amadistrict16.com, this event guide, or the Cycle USA magazine which you will start receiving as part of your district membership. All these sources also contain contact information for the event promoting organizations. You can always contact us at District 16 for information on schedules, racing numbers, rules or other questions. A good place to start may be the director/ referee of the side of the sport you want to get involved with... example, the motocross referee to answer a motocross related question. Easier yet, show up at an event as a spectator, and start asking questions, you’ll find everyone quite welcoming.

Hillclimbing in District 16
B
ack in the 1920s, hill climbing was the most popular form of motorcycle competition. Although the number of hillclimb events has dwindled over the years, the enthusiasm of the participants remains strong and District 16 will host seven of these very exciting events in 2016. Hillclimbs are essentially a one-person drag race up the face of a challenging hill, and each rider is allowed at least two attempts to conquer the climb. The winner is the rider who climbs the hill the quickest. In cases where riders don't make it all the way
to the top, results are based on footage, or the distance traveled before losing forward momentum. There’s a variety of different classes starting with a youth group and continuing through the open class monsters with ground shaking power. Hill climbs are exciting and very convenient/ popular for spectators and families. You’ll usually be able to get some great viewing without having to move around much, and the action is pretty much non stop, right from the start of the day. If you’ve never been to one of these events, make plans for one in 2016.

Dirt Track Racing
I
f you've ever had the desire to pitch a motorcycle sideways in a corner, then accelerate through a controlled slide, dirt-track racing is the place for you. Dirt track races are run on various lengths of prepared oval tracks: short tracks, which are less than 2,250 feet in circumference; half-miles, measuring from 2,250 feet up to roughly five-eighths of a mile; and miles, which as the name implies are a

mile in circumference. In addition, Tourist Trophy or TT scrambles events are held on tracks including right- and left-hand turns and a jump. Classes are available for riders in different age groups and skill levels, and on a wide variety of machine types and sizes. The season in District 16 kicks off in May and then runs through the summer.
There are motorcycle classes for the youngest of riders right through the over 50 year age class for the distinguished riders. Many events also have classes for Quad riders. These events are often known as the most spectator friendly with bleachers overlooking the entire race track. You are able to get close to the action and really feel the excitement involved in each part of the race.

Enduro events always popular E nduros don’t have mass starts like a Hare Scrambles. Rows of usually 45 riders start every minute. This avoids a lot of the congestion on the trail and jockeying in tight, wooded trail. If a rider comes up from behind, and you are caught, you let them by as you are already beat because they came from a minute behind you. Riders of different classes can be on the same row which makes it easy to ride with your friends. Enduros very from event to event, but are generally run on wooded trail consisting of single track, two track and open fields. There are usually logs, water crossings, rocks, roots and other obstacles that must be traversed along the trail. With land being eaten up by housing and other development, many of the events are held on properties of many different land owners that must be connected via road. There are some “closed course” events around that do not traverse roads, and the clubs hosting the event try to keep the road mileage to a minimum,
but in most cases, it can’t be avoided. So in general, your motorcycle must have a headlight and taillight. The clubs are generally pretty lenient about what constitutes a headlight or taillight, and working with local law enforcement. Enduros have evolved over the years to make the events more inclusive. The days

of keeping time are pretty much extinct. In a “Traditional time-keeping Enduro” the goal is to maintain a specified average speed throughout the course. Within the course were hidden, unknown checks. If you were early or too late you were penalized. Whoever had the lowest score at the end of the day won. Many riders were turned off by the time keeping and just wanted to ride. Recognizing this, the Start Control/Restart format was born. This is the most common format for today’s Enduros. There is no average speed that must be maintained. Essentially, each section has a start and a finish where the start is the “check in” and the finish is the “check out” and riders are scored based on how much time it took to ride the section. At the end of the day, the scores from each section are totaled, and the rider with the lowest total score wins. If you are out for an easy day of trail riding, your time is longer, and if you want to race full out, your time is shorter. The event can consist of several sections, usually connected via road, or you may ride the same course multiple times, starting/finishing with each lap.

Observed Trials, not about speed
T
rails is a form of motorcycle competition that emphasizes precise balance and control while riding over a designated area of difficult terrain. It’s not a race... only one rider is ‘observed’ at a time. It can be slow, so slow
that the rider may even stand still, as long as he (or she) doesn’t put a foot down. The range of skills and techniques employed by the best riders is deceptively varied. Just imagine trying to fling yourself and your cycle up over a five foot wall. Or edging down a steep, rocky, moss-covered hillside, then
turning across the slope to cross a large sloping log before charging and winding your way back up. How about leaping and balancing your way up a stream loaded with both small and large rocks. So, Observed Trials is a battle between the rider and the terrain. The rider who makes the fewest mistakes wins. And since it is essentially a solo battle, the rider can practice at home, even on level ground, perfecting such skills as balance, turning and clutch control. Trials ‘Obstacles’ can even be set up in a backyard. The sport is very spectator friendly... but expect to do a little walking through the woods for the best views. Trials events in D16 offer free spectating, so make sure to check one out this summer! They are perfect for families.

District 16 season always concludes with annual awards banquet
E
ach year the District 16 Awards Banquet rolls around during the second weekend of November. In recent years, it has always been held in the popular and centrally located Wisconsin Dells. In 2016 it will be November 12th at the famous Kalahari resort and water park. Riders from all the divisions come together to spend a weekend having fun, and celebrate the just completed season. Top performers get beautiful plaques, and customized jackets. There’s also a bunch of cool door prizes and raffles, often includ-

ing two motorcycles and a lot of other cool prizes, all following a great dinner with special friends. Best part is you don’t have to be a top
finisher to enjoy this weekend. Its a great time with others that also love this sport. This quickly becomes a must attend for everyone that gets involved in District 16.

Dual Sports, all about good times
D
ual Sports are catching on in District 16, and for 2016 there are five of these events. To participate in a Dual Sport event you first need to be of legal driving age, and have a motorcycle that will be “considered” street legal. We say considered, because of the wide array of motorcycles that can be used at these events. There are the popular on/ off road bikes offered by most of the manufacturers, bikes that you would swear just don’t belong off-road... like the 1000cc plus adventure style bikes, and then converted “dirt” bikes. Bottom line, the bike has to have a license plate, meet maximum noise requirements, and have lights... semiknobby tires are a good idea, but not always needed. Each ride is a little different, and if you are questioning your bike’s set-up, a call to the sponsoring club is a good idea. Dual Sport events often cover a hundred plus miles per day, and combine some road riding, gravel/ fire roads, and then some challenging off road trails. Usually the most challenging sections have optional routes, allowing the less “off-road” style bikes and less experienced riders to still have a great time by choosing their level of difficulty. These events are non-competitive, fun
rides where rider camaraderie is at its highest. While riding in an event, you’ll find groups frequently stopped trailside taking photos, grabbing a bite to eat, or discussing an adventure they just experienced. The participants will be from all aspects of our sport; racers,
experienced trail riders, and newbies to off-road riding. Everyone comes for the same reason... to have a good time, and get in some great riding. Give one of the event promoters a call, then come out and do some riding. You’ll have a great time!

Hare Scrambles Racing Off-road fun for all ages
H
are scrambles are conducted on marked courses over rugged natural terrain. Youth classes usually run for 30 minutes, C class (beginners) an hour. The A, B, and adult age divisions typically run for two hours. Since hare scrambles are conducted on closed courses, operator licenses aren't required and the machines do not need to be licensed for street use, and they are about as off-road oriented as it gets in the midwest. District 16 hare scrambles frequently combine a portion of a motocross track and plenty of wooded trails when available. Courses usually range from two to six miles in length. Events start mid morning and
continue through the afternoon, making for a comfortable day. District 16 has nine hare scrambles events in the 2016 season. Some of them are in neighboring states, and a few are in conjunction with Enduro events, offering new locations and a mixed group of riders. All the events pay points towards year-end awards and recognition. These are often great events for newer riders with some trail experience all the way to the fastest of off-road riders. The challenges of the trail are often very reasonable, and meant to make it a fun day for the masses. They are like competitive trail rides for some, that just enjoy the trail and added challenge of competition.

Road America has your ticket to learn “How to Ride”
R
oad America has quickly become a mecca for motorcycle fans and enthusiasts, not only because the popular 4-mile, 14-turn facility hosts the MotoAmerica (AMA/FIM) Honda Superbike Showdown of Wisconsin every year. But also because shortly after the Superbike weekend subsides, vintage motorcyclists flock to the area for the Rockerbox MotoFest and AHRMA Vintage Motorcycle Classic. The AHRMA/ Rockerbox weekend is crammed full of vintage iron. Fans can walk along the rows of motorcycles and parts while taking in live bands, a custom bike show and vendor offerings. In addition to being a haven for everything two-wheeled in the early summer, Road America also has its own motorcycle school. The Road America Motorcycle School (RAMS) is one of Wisconsin’s
premier cycle-training facilities, educating two-wheel enthusiasts in a variety of courses. Endorsed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), Road America’s Basic Rider Courses, Clinics and Dirt Bike School are taught by award-winning rider coaches who have completed extensive training through the MSF and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). Successful completion of the school's basic rider course enables participants to obtain a class M endorsement on their driver's license. Widely known as the largest private motorcycle training facility in Wisconsin, Road America’s Motorcycle School is designed to maximize the fun and minimize the risk of motorcycling.
A current schedule of RAMS courses and a full event schedule is available online at www.roadamerica.com or by calling Road America, 800-365-7223.

Exciting Motocross in D16 M otocross is the most popular form of amateur motorcycle racing, and with classes for machines from 50cc to 500cc, and riders from four-years-old to fifty plus, it's a sport for the whole family. Motocross races are run over closed courses utilizing natural terrain and man-

made obstacles to test riders' skill and speed. Tracks include hills, jumps and tight turns. One of the most strenuous sports in the world, motocross is a rugged test for both rider and machine. Most motocross events consist of two heats, called motos, that are run for a prescribed period of time, or a set number of
laps. Points are earned in each moto based on finishing position and the rider with the best total score is the overall winner. Motocross events in D16 kick off in April, and run through the end of October. In many cases, there are multiple events per weekend. These events are all day activities. The practice sessions get started right away in the morning usually followed by a riders’ meeting where schedules and other announcements are made. All the classes will usually run through their first motos before starting the final set. There’s a large selection of classes available, and a majority of the riders will qualify for multiple classes, and often on the same motorcycle. Age divisions and

engine size usually determines many of the classes, as well as experience levels, the C classes being for new riders while the A classes are dominated by experienced riders, and even local professionals. Occasionally you’ll also find divisions for Quad riders at events holding classes for those riders. The youth oriented classes usually re-
quire some sort of rider age for certain engine or machines, referred to as minis. You can get a feel for these class limits by looking over the membership application on the District web site, where you will also find links to both D16 rules, and the AMA rule book. (www.amadistrict16.com) You need to make sure a rider’s age will allow them to ride a par-
ticular size mini class bike. It is very common for families and riders to make motocross events a weekend affair, showing up the afternoon before the event and camping out. This is just one of the many aspects that make this such a great family sport. Spectators are always welcome.

In the Lower Peninsula, the system is the only legal place to ride Non-Secretary of State licensed ORVs on public lands other than frozen waters. In the Upper Peninsula, it is legal for ORVs to operate on state forest roads as well as the designated trail system, unless a specific state forest road is posted closed to ORV use. Trails are lightly groomed and riders are likely to encounter narrow sand trails, rough moguls, steep hills, stumps, rocks, brush, loose surfaces and other hazards.
