AMA District 17 - 2016 Event Guide

Welcome to AMA District 17, and our 2016 Event Guide

T

he American Motorcyclist Association District 17 Club Council has published this booklet to inform you about us, our 40 Member Clubs and Promoters, and the nearly 300 events we have scheduled across the State of Illinois, and the Midwest, for the 2016 riding season. The AMA District 17 Club Council was incorporated in 1974 as an organization of the AMA clubs and promoters in the northern 3/4 of the state of Illinois. Each year the Club Council sends representatives to AMA Congress in Pickering, Ohio to update the rules, classes and procedures for all of the AMA sanctioned amateur events throughout the country. We organize our events and dates into a calendar and provide yearly overall awards to the most successful participants in the more than 100 classes of nine different competition disciplines at our annual awards banquet. Our competition riders will earn points and awards competing in events held in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin in 2016. We are also active in helping protect your right to ride, nationally through the American Motorcyclist Association, and by working with our representatives in state and local governments to head off legislation that would limit your rights. We are also working to expand your recreational opportunities by working with our member clubs and promoters and the state and federal government to help fund existing riding areas and open new ones.

If you are a long time enthusiast, or just entering the sport, there is something for you within these pages. On these pages you will find racing events, road events, off-road parks and club grounds where you and your family can spend quality time together, riding the trails or as a participant or spectator. Again, welcome to AMA District 17, we’re here to help you, and your family enjoy our sport together, and most of all, to have fun with your motorcycle or atv. Feel free to contact any of the clubs, promoters or OHV parks listed in this publication, or go to our website, amadistrict17.com, for more information. There you will find more detailed information about our organization and links to web sites of the member clubs and promoters and other sites of interest.

Enjoy our sport in 2016 and, as always... Ride Safe!!! AMA District 17 Club Council Board of Directors

AMA District 17 - 2016 Event Guide

Going Racing With District 17 R acing with the rest of the AMA District 17 Family is easy! Later in this introduction you will find the things you need to know and how to go about getting started! D17 is the foundation and “farm team of AMA” for so many riders and has produced many great riders since 1974. From Dirt Track to Trials, Motocross to Hill Climb, a quick look at the map in the back of this guide will show the vast amount of tracks and clubs to participate in all kinds of racing & riding endeavors! Quality locations, classes for all ages and abilities, the choices available for the riders in our area are second to none! Showcasing the racers accomplishments are done by many types of Series. Multiple Series by the individual clubs/promoters, along with the most important District 17 Championship Series which includes ALL the tracks and clubs in AMA District 17 areas. The Champions crowned in Illinois have raced the season and have proved they have stood the test of weather, time, and competition to stand on the top of the pedestal. Championships aren’t easy, they are earned. This all is recognized and rewarded at the end of the season with a large Annual Awards Banquet and presentation. But the key to all of this is to have a great time, bring the family it really is a fun and challenging time! District 17 also has almost as many places to ride as it does race. Don’t forget to check out these locations, they are legal, fun, and likely not far from you! Below are some of the things a new rider

should know. As a rider, you must rely on your own judgment, and you assume all risks when participating in any type of competition. Although all AMA-sanctioned meets are conducted under the guidelines established in the AMA Rulebook and District Supplemental Rules, each club, or promoter, may operate a bit differently. There are several things you can expect regardless of where you race: *You must be a full AMA member to compete in any type of AMA Amateur Competition. If you are not a current member, you may join online or at the track on the day of an event. Link can be found on the D-17 web site. * Specific rules exist regarding minor participation, in most cases a parent or legal guardian must be present. A guardian can be assigned for the day of the actual event with a properly notarized form available at amadistrict17.com. *District Membership will also be required. You will be able to join District 17 at any event, or an application can be obtained from amadistrict17.com, or from within this guide. *All participants and spectators attending a race may be required to pay an admission fee upon entering the facility. Race participants also pay a registration or entry fee. *All participants must wear a protective helmet, eye protection, gloves, a longsleeve shirt, protective pants and boots that are at least eight inches high. *It is your responsibility to know the rules and become familiar with the AMA Rulebook. Check for the AMA rule book

and D-17 supplemental rules and bike specifics these can be found on the District web site. The AMA is geographically divided into 43 districts. A district organization is composed of enthusiasts like you, as well as clubs, promoters and elected District Officials. AMA District 17 has an abundance of motorcycling activity. You'll have to become a member of District 17 in addition to being an AMA member. As a member of your local AMA District you may be issued a racing number, and be eligible to earn points at events in which you participate towards year-end awards. For a schedule of events in your area, refer to the District 17 web site www.amadistrict17.com, this event guide, or the Cycle USA magazine which you will start receiving as part of your District membership. All these sources also contain contact information for the promoting organizations. You can also contact your district organization for information on schedules, racing numbers, rules or other more localized questions. A good place to start may be the Director of the division of the sport you wish to get involved with... example, contact the Motocross Director to answer a motocross related question. Check out AMA District 17 in 2016 for all the FUN events and places to ride! AMA District 17 - 2016 Event Guide

AMA District 17 - 2016 Event Guide

Flat Track Championships F

lat Track motorcycle racing is an offspring of the famous Board Trackers of the early part of the twentieth century. In the early days, the board trackers would travel speeds close to 100 miles per

hour on bicycle size tires on an elevated wooden track made of planks of lumber. After too many accidents, the board tracks were abandoned and the Dirt Track was born. The first American born form of mo-

torcycle racing hit the dirt. The 2016 District 17 Dirt Track schedule consists of races of a mixed variety. First you have the elbow to elbow, stay down low, don’t slip off the groove short tracks. Next we go to the T.T. (Tourist Trophy), they’re usually one third to one half mile in length, they typically have a right hand turn and a small jump or down hill section added to a semi oval track. The trick on these tracks is to have the horse power to pull hard down the often half mile like straight, but still have the low end to pull out of the usually tight turns that follow them. Finally we get to the half miles, made for speed. The big bikes hit speeds of close to if not over 100 miles per hour. There’s no secrets here, horsepower, horsepower. In today’s world of Dirt Tracking the new 450 four strokes being put out by all the factories, are beginning to rule the way.

AMA District 17 - 2016 Event Guide

With the AMA changing the rules limiting the short track and T.T. Grand Nationals to 450cc, four strokes were bound to see more and more factories getting involved. If you want to get involved and money is no problem, a new 450 four stroke, set up properly to compete, will probably set you back seven to eight thousand dollars. The first timer who isn’t sure if that’s what he or she wants, can probably get into a 125 or 250 already set up for far less. The classes are almost unlimited, 50cc shaft or chain, 65, 85, 86,75-125 four stroke(7-11) to 160cc four stroke (a fun, inexpensive class to run) 86 to 200cc two stroke (a good beginner adult), 250cc- a strong class with usually a good rider turn out, the 450 and Open classes (these should be reserved for the more experienced riders),

then we have the open amateur class, the Vet class 30 years old or older, the Senior

class for those 40 plus and the Super Senior, fifty years old and older. Last but not least, the Quad or Four wheeler classes. Keep in mind today’s youth and amateur riders are the GNC stars of tomorrow. District 17 always has a very talented group of riders. If your coming to watch, remember, practice usually takes about an hour, then the heat races begin followed by the finals. So if you want to make a day or night of it show up for practice, if your looking more like two or three hours skip the practice, but make it in time for the heats, they're usually as exciting as the finals.

D17 Trials, a low speed thriller!

U

nique in the world of motorcycle competition, observed trials puts no emphasis on speed. Observed trials competitors must negotiate several "sections" of difficult terrain without putting their feet down. Penalty points are assessed for mistakes, and the rider with the lowest overall score at the end of the day wins. Most trials events are held in the timber, riding through creeks and over logs & rocks.

There are different classes based on experience, not age or cycle size. You may have a 12 year old riding against an 80 year old! Trials is a very family friendly sport. A trials competition normal has sections that vary from beginner to sections that are so difficult, it’s hard to imagine a mountain goat traversing them, much less a rider on two wheels. There really is something for everyone in Observed trials!

Trials

All about precision riding on fun, challenging obstacles.

Aug. 28

Gran Prix Championship Series G ran Prix racing is still a pretty new form of racing to District 17, but it has been done for years on both the East and West coasts not to mention Europe. Now that it has been run awhile, changes to the classes and process have been done to address rider’s feedback and streamline the race day even further. The new classes along with those that worked well should make for a more competitive and more level playing field. A, B, C and age classes will be run along with Vintage and the Women’s class. The long motos offer a real value to the riders. A nice blend of natural terrain, man made obstacles, grass track and easy trails to bring it all together for a great day of racing/riding. Less is more with GP racing! Less classes run during the day means more riding, and less time waiting. Motos are on average

about twenty minutes long, with a ten total moto layout the day’s program takes a little longer than five hours. Less wait time, and if you ride multiple classes, you will have a solid workout and good day of racing. FUN! With the courses that we have seen the past couple years, riders have expressed what a great time racing at these events is. Gran Prix’s offers the intensity of motocross but less aggressive air time. They offer trails experience without the need to brush guards. And as a bonus some events offer grass track experience and or Endurocross obstacles. New venues in 2016 makes us all excited to see how this part of the Districts event s will grow! More GP's on the schedule gives the riders a value with more choices and less travel times.

Enduros Ultimate Off-Road

D

o you like to get a full day of riding in with friends? If so the District 17 Enduro series is for you. You can signup with friends and treat it like an organized trail ride or race against the clock and challenge your ability and your mind. Some District 17 enduros are using the Start Control format where no timekeeping is needed while others are using the standard format creating a good mix for the series. Our Enduro series has some of the best trail in the midwest and the events are put on by riders for riders. So pick an event or two and come enjoy a District 17 Enduro. Enduros are one of the oldest forms of motorcycle competition. Run on a challenging route that includes wooded and desert terrain, more difficult "test" sections are typically connected with roads, fire roads or easy twotrack trail. Enduros can vary greatly across the country, but one thing is certain everywhere: They are one of the most enjoyable, thrilling and fulfilling forms of motorsports competition.

Hare Scrambles, a great test H

are Scrambles are conducted on a marked course over natural or man-made terrain, where most courses average 2.5 to 10 miles. The terrain runs in the woods, fields, and hills or whatever the promoter has to use. The events are run for a designated number of laps or for a prescribed race time, typically 1.5 to 2 hours long. Competitive riders not only need to be fast, but physically fit enough to maintain a race pace for hours at a time, but all size and shape riders participate in these events. Riders have different classes to compete in: AA for top riders, then A, B and C for beginners and each level has bike cc size within the class. There are also age classes: +30A, +30B, +30C, +40A, +40 B, +50A and +50B motorcycle rider age class. We also have four classes for 4-Wheelers: Quad A, B, C, and +35 age group. The 4-Wheelers run at a different time and do not compete against the motorcycles. Hare-Scrambles are a family affair. We also have classes for the little racer in the family. We have a 50cc class for 4 to 6 and 7 to 8 year olds, a 65cc class for 7 to 11 year olds, and an 85cc class for 7 to

15 year olds. There’s also a Women’s class for riders 13yrs and up, on 86cc to 250cc size bikes. So with all of these op-

tions it is easy for riders of all skill levels to come out and have fun at these excellent events.

Motocross & Stadium Motocross

M

otocross & Stadium Motocross are some of the most popular forms of amateur motorcycle racing, and with classes for machines from 50cc to 500cc, and riders from fouryears-old to 50-plus, it’s a sport for the whole family. District 17 has more races, and more places to practice than any other part of the country! District 17 clubs and promoters are constantly improving their facilities to make sure they offer riders everything they can. No where in the country can a better group of facilities be found. Motocross races are run on closed courses utilizing natural terrain and some man-made obstacles to test riders’ skill

and speed. Tracks include hills, jumps and tight turns. One of the most strenuous sports in the world, motocross is a rugged test of endurance for both rider and machine. Stadium MX (Supercross style) is mainly made up of man made obstacles, and often utilizes the heat/ main formats. Stadium MX racing in District 17 is mainly run on Friday or Saturday nights, on smaller tracks and they are usually very spectator friendly. Most motocross events consist of two or more heats, called motos, those are run for a prescribed period of time or a set number of laps.

Points are earned in each moto based on finishing position and the rider with the best total score is the overall winner. Stadium MX racing is a heat/ main format type race, which means the results from the Main event are the final results. Motocross and Stadium motocross racing is popular throughout the United States. Many different series of events, district oriented championships, and also national level events can be found in District 17 at one time or another! Racing from as early as February can happen and we race into mid November!

Hill Climbing in District 17 D big and bad Harleys, some running engines in excess of 1600cc. It's a sound and sight delight! It's a unique sport - filled with unique machines and fearless riders. Hill climbing is a family sport - you will find many cases of fathers and sons riding in the same event - and several young ladies

istrict 17 has a very active hill climb program, with events at six different club grounds. The season starts weekend in April, and extends through September. The hills range in length from 90 to 200 feet and degrees of difficulty from easy to quite challenging. There are 19 classes ranging from 50cc up to the Open class (over 750cc), with two stock classes for those who like to run their motocross or trail bikes and two Quad classes. Ages of competitors range from 4 years old to over 60. Two Senior classes (40+ and 50+) are offered for veterans who like to compete against others their own age. Youth classes include 4-8 50cc, 6-11 65cc, 7-11 85cc, and 12-15 85cc. Whatever you ride, however old you are, we have a class. Many riders compete in multiple classes at each event. The 750cc and Open classes are particularly interesting, as the riders have converted large street machines into fire breathing racers. You'll see the infamous Kawasaki 3 cylinder 2-stroke streak of lightning racers, four cylinder Yamahas, Suzukis, Hondas and Kawasakis, the vertical twins of Triumph, BSA and Norton, and, of course, the

compete also. Most clubs run two day events, and allow free camping on their grounds, so one of the best parts of hill climbing is the camaraderie of the many families and friends enjoying each other's company in the overnight camping. Most youth riders come with their complete immediate families, and District 17 has very large youth classes, and is quite generous with youth awards both at the individual events and at the District 17 awards banquet. Hill climbing is also a very spectatorfriendly sport. You can set up your blanket, canopy, etc, and sit back and enjoy the excitement as all the action is right in front of you. And the action is incredible - spectacular crashes now and then but lots of exciting motorcycle action all the time. If you've never seen a motorcycle hill climb, your sport spectating experience is not complete. And if you think you'd like to try it, but don't have a 'real' hill climber, bring out your MX'er, trail bike or quad - all it needs is a tether kill switch and you're ready to ride. We have a stock class for your bike. Many of our best hill climbers started in stock classes and got hooked maybe you're next!
