RIDE QUEBEC CITY Québec’s cycling love affair is legendary, and the Québec City region is home to five amazing trail networks that boast some of the best mountain-biking trails anywhere in the world. Vallée Bras-du-Nord features 100km of superb singletrack on two trail systems, Shannahan and Saint-Raymond, with ample climbing and demanding descents, berms, bridges and rock gardens. Shannahan’s 70km of trails welcome beginners and families on the Delaney Falls route, while advanced riders can stretch their legs on Boreal, Légende and Neilson along with other popular trails. Mont-Sainte-Anne (MSA) has a global reputation as one of the ultimate destinations for mountain bikers with trails for beginners, families, and expert riders alike. Claiming the largest trail network in Eastern Canada, it includes 137 kilometres of cross-country trails, 32 kilometres of downhill trails — all reachable by chairlift. The award-winning Mountain Bike Park features a variety of trails including “La Cairn” (XC) or “La Grisante”

Located just 20 minutes from Québec City, Sentiers du Moulin is a mountain biker’s paradise. With 65km of mountain-bike and all-mountain trails for riders of all skill levels, a highlight is the unique “Slab

City” trail where you can ride exclusively on porous granite for over one mile, making it one of the longest enduro descents on bedrock in the world. In partnership with Bikeskills, an exclusive mountainbike coaching academy for beginners and experienced riders, Sentiers du Moulin offers a full range of clinics, private lessons, as well as corporate and guiding services. The accommodation options near Sentiers du Moulin are varied with beautiful mini-cabins at the Maelstrom sector on the trails, along with the Entourage sur-le-Lac hotel on the shore of Lac-Beauport. Discover Petite Nation on the 129km route “On the Road to Papineau” that begins at Fairmont Le Château Montebello, the world’s largest log cabin. If you’re looking for a challenge, or a great place to burn off some energy, try the 80km “Thighs of Steel” route in renowned Gatineau Park with its exceptional cycling network, a two-wheeled gem located in Collines-del’Outaouais. Your journey begins at Parking Lot 3 and heads along the Gatineau Parkway towards Pink Lake Lookout. If you’re feeling zesty, take Chemin de la Montagne and pass the former estate of Mackenzie King, Canada’s longest-serving Prime Minister, to reach the Champlain Lookout for more breathtaking views. The Parkway route takes you through the village of Chelsea with its many restaurants and attractions, and then head north on Route 105 to the luxurious Moulin Wakefield Mill Hôtel & Spa where you can make a pit stop and enjoy a relaxing beverage before heading back. On your way home, take a break after tackling 1,000m of elevation on your ride, and quench your thirst with a craft beer at the Chelsea Pub. Known as a green paradise with countless options for sports enthusiasts, Gatineau Park also has an information centre in Chelsea with maps and other info to whet your appetite for even more exceptional cycling excursions.

On the shores of the Capital

Don’t miss the opportunity to play tourist in the City of Gatineau which offers a cycling network of close to 300km of trails. Try the Voyageurs pathway that stretches for an easy 30km along the Ottawa River as you follow the same historic route taken by First Nations people, explorers, coureurs des bois and Jesuit missionaries. On the Road to Papineau


du vélo that rents bikes for a small fee. Begin your leisurely cruise as you enjoy spectacular views of Parliament Hill, across the river in Ottawa, and the Canadian Museum of History. Other nearby attractions include the Hôtel-Casino LacLeamy, the Downtown Gatineau’s Cultural Trail and the Symmes Inn Museum in Old Aylmer. During your ride, stop for a meal at one of the fabulous restaurants in the Old Hull neighbourhood. For additional fabulous cycling options in bikefriendly Gatineau–Ottawa, experience the 600km multi-use Capital Pathway Network, one of the largest in North America.

The Northern Log Drivers

For more breathtaking scenery and an unforgettable cycling adventure, the 72km Véloroute des Draveurs (log drivers’ bike route) is a dedicated bike route that’s part of the Trans Canada Trail. Beginning in the town of Low, at the southern gateway to the Vallée-de-la-Gatineau, you’ll find parking at the tourist information kiosk and public toilets. Built on an old railway line, the trail features ecosystems with marshes, lakes, rivers and beautiful forests. As you head north, the first 37km offers a stone and gravel surface until Gracefield where there’s a rest stop with parking lots and toilets – or start your ride in Gracefield to avoid the gravel section. The journey continues north on a paved 35km linear bike path where you can enjoy panoramic views of the beautiful, crystal-clear Blue Sea Lake, and take a swim to cool off. Stretch your legs to arrive at Messines, where the bike path ends, for another relaxing pit stop before heading back, or venture on to Maniwaki, but note the path is not maintained. Rated medium difficulty, this fabulous route is great for families as well.

Head West to the Pontiac

In the western part of the Outaouais region, the Pontiac features great trails, lush natural surroundings, and many sites steeped in history and culture. Plus, there are gourmet stops along the way that will whet your appetite! Take on the intermediate level 164km circuit route that starts in the charming town of Shawville on a mix of on-road and recreation trails. The section to Waltham runs along the Cycloparc PPJ, which is built on the old Pontiac Pacific Junction railroad tracks and features a mix of crushed stone and gravel - hybrid or mountain bikes are recommended. As you move farther west, the landscape changes into more forested areas with rocky outcrops of the Canadian Shield and views of the Ottawa River. Take in the village of Fort-Coulonge and its many historic and natural sites while you admire the Coulonge Falls. For a little adventure, try rafting on the Ottawa River, Canada’s best rafting river, with Rafting Momentum or ziplining at Chutes Coulonge Adventure Park. Top off your cycling adventure with a stop at one of the gourmet eateries along the way.

P

art of the Route Verte and Trans Canada Trail, the journey connects riders with nature where you can experience a sense of well-being as you discover the fabulous regions of Montérégie and the Eastern Townships. Take time to explore 130 epicurean stops including breweries, restaurants, wineries and gourmet shops. Enjoy the many activities, attractions, historical sites and museums found throughout both regions. The velodrome at the Centre National de cyclisme de Bromont lets you try different skills such as BMX, pumptrack and track cycling. Two national parks provide hiking trails, canoeing and kayak rentals, along with lakes and beaches. The Véloroute is divided into four sections, varying in length from 45km to 70km, but you can explore at your own pace. The first section is from Montréal to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu (45km) where you’ll find the Fort Chambly National Historic Site, home to the stone fort that soldiers built in 1711. As you ride along the Chambly Canal, you can enjoy the view of boats sailing alongside you. Once in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, you can discover the local flavours while you enjoy the summer entertainment at the Place publique du Vieux-Saint-Jean. Head out across the region’s farmlands for the next segment from Saint-Jeansur-Richelieu to Granby (50km), where you can meet creative artisans who will

be happy to share their know-how. Visit the Farnham Ale & Lager Microbrewery and the Fromagerie des Cantons for everything needed for a picnic at one of the designated areas along the way. Near Granby, the Centre d’interprétation de la nature du lac Boivin invites you learn about the region’s rich biodiversity. Enjoy a morning coffee in Granby before taking on the next 70km to Orford. Known for its champagne powder as part of the Powder Highway, Fernie is also an established cycling destination for all levels of riders, with an ever-growing trail network thanks to its passionate community.

here are eight areas with literally hundreds of trails to choose from, including mountain biking, gravel cycling, downhill via lift access, bike-packing, and fat biking in winter. For novice bikers and families, we recommend exploring the new paved Fernie Valley Pathway (10.6km return). The 1.2km Cemetery Trail Loop and the 7km Easy Beaver Adaptive Trail are friendly teasers to singletrack mountain biking in Fernie. For intermediate riders, the 7.5km Swine Flu trail offers a sustained uphill with a flowy, fast downhill. For more advanced riders, the trails on Castle Mountain such as Hyper Ventilation, Hyper Extension and Southern Comfort all offer technical uphill & downhill challenges. Fernie Alpine Resort’s lift access bike park features 36 trails in the summer season from late June to early September. Build confidence on Honey Bee before flowing through Mr. Berms and moving on to Top Gun, famous for its low and fast jumps.

There are countless gravel routes highlighted by the Fernie Gravel Grind event in July, a weekend-long gravel cycling experience with some of the best gravel riding that Canada has to offer. The event is open to everyone and offers multiple distances, race categories and live entertainment for all ages. If bike-packing is your game, Fernie is located at one of the stops on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route that spans 4,418km and the TransCanada Trail with 27,000km. Local bike packing routes include Hartley Lake for a 30km return day trip or the mammoth Summer Lake 130km return multi-day adventure. l Paso offers a host of inner-city rides that are sure to whet your cycling appetite. The beautiful 200-acre Palisades Canyon is smack in the middle of town and features a multi-use 4.4-mile loop. The southwestern section can be ridden by beginner cyclists while the northern and eastern portions are more suited to intermediate and advanced riders. McKelligon Canyon Road is a relatively easy out-and-back 4.8-mile trail for all skill levels and features Chihuahuan Desert wildlife. Try the popular and moderately challenging 7.7-mile mountain biking loop at the Lost Dog Trail Head nature preserve in Northwest El Paso. The 9-mile Old Blue Mad Lazy Cow Loop makes for an amazing and varied MTB adventure that can be completed in just over an hour by an average rider. Within the city limits is Franklin Mountains State Park where you can explore over 125 miles of multi-use trails that are especially popular with mountain bikers.
