Colorado launched the USA’s first statewide e-bike tax credit.

Colorado Launches USA’s First Statewide eBike Rebate

On April 1, Colorado launched the USA’s first statewide e-bike tax credit. All residents received a $450 point-ofsale instant discount on the purchase of an e-bike from participating retailers, who will also receive $50 per qualifying e-bike purchase as an incentive for offering the discount.

The e-bike tax credit discount follows the successful completion of the statewide, income-qualified e-bike rebate program held Aug. 2023 to Feb. 2024, which resulted in 5,557 new e-bike purchases. The initiative was so popular that $6.6 million in funding was exhausted months earlier than planned.

“Transportation is the leading source of greenhouse gas pollution, and we’re excited to launch this tax credit, as e-bikes are a very popular zeroemission option to achieve our pollution reduction goals,” said Colorado Energy Office’s Executive Director Will Toor. The state of Colorado tax credit discount will be available through to 2032.

France Includes Refurbished eBikes, eCargo Bikes for Rebates

As of January 1, France has extended its rebate of up to €2,000 to include professionally refurbished e-bikes, e-cargo bikes and non-electric bicycles.

The assistance initiative, which falls under the country’s 2023-2027 Cycling and Walking Plan, was extended to 2027. The program also includes people with disabilities.

San Francisco’s eBike Food Delivery Awarded $600,000 of New Funding

San Francisco Mayor, London N. Breed, and the San Francisco Environment (SFE) Department announced in early December that the city had been awarded a $600,000 federal grant from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to expand their E-Bike Delivery Pilot program. The funding will more than double the number of participants in the city’s green food delivery initiative.

The expansion builds on a $2.4 million clean transportation grant the City received in 2022 from the California Energy Commission (CEC) that supported the launch of the program for up to 30 participants. This includes new e-bike food-delivery participants, safety trainings, and robust data collection to showcase the overall and environmental benefits of utilizing e-bikes for deliveries rather than fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

Over 40% of San Francisco’s carbon emissions come from fossil fuel vehicle operations. As a transitfirst city with a goal of achieving 80% of trips through low-carbon modes of transportation, cleaner alternatives that include biking, walking, and mass transit are essential strategies.

Canada Invests $582K in Active Transportation

Projects

Four active transportation research and planning projects are moving forward after an investment of $582,000 from Infrastructure Canada.

Vélo Canada Bikes, Saint Mary’s University, the Halifax Regional Municipality, and Cycling Nova Scotia will each receive $50,000 from the federal government as part of the investment.

The new funding will support feasibility studies, research and data collection initiatives, as well as stakeholder engagements to help create future active transportation projects.

Vélo Canada Bikes will develop a cost-benefit analysis tool for active transportation investments that can be used by policymakers and community stakeholders in Halifax. If successfully piloted, this tool could be put in the public domain, allowing people to assess the costs and benefits of such projects across Canada.

Cycling Nova Scotia will collaborate with municipalities and First Nations communities in Nova Scotia to develop plans for its Core Active Transportation Networks project.

Halifax Regional Municipality will conduct research to evaluate the safety impact of high-visibility crosswalk markings at signalized intersections.

Saint Mary’s University will develop an active transportation plan to build new greenways, sidewalks, and enhanced bicycle facilities and how it will integrate with the Halifax Active Transportation Plan.

These investments are part of Canada’s National Active Transportation Strategy, which aims to create and improve pathways, bike lanes and pedestrian bridges all over the country.

Jersey City Launches USA’s Bicycle Parking & Charging Network

Jersey City recently made history by launching the nation’s first comprehensive municipal bicycle parking and charging network. This initiative will be undertaken by Oonee, based in Brooklyn, NY.

The Jersey City Bike Parking System will eventually provide more than 30 publicly accessible stations to commuters, residents and visitors, servicing nearly 300,000 people. Financed with digital advertising and sponsorship, the 24/7 stations are free for taxpayers and users alike.

“This initiative will also provide a powerful, pathfinding example to other North American communities that are seeking to develop their own networks,” said Shabazz Stewart, CEO of Oonee.

Historic Minimum of Two Bicycle Parking Spaces in EU

In early Dec. 2023, the first-ever provisional agreement on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive set European minimum bicycle parking norms for virtually all types of buildings, both residential and non-residential at two bicycle spaces.

When rubberstamped officially by Member States and the European Parliament, there will be no less than ground-breaking for bicycle parking norms across the European Union — as many Member States lack such norms.

ICBF Announces New Utrecht Venue for Oct. 25-26 Event

In early March, the International Cargo Bike Festival (ICBF) announced the City of Utrecht as its new 2024 venue from Oct. 25-26, in conjunction with Dutch Cycling Week.

This marks the first time the event will be held in Utrecht, a city with a multicultural population of 360,000. In contrast with previous years, ICBF 2024 will be a stand-alone event.

Utrecht boasts world-class cycling infrastructure, including the largest bicycle parking facility in the world, located at the railway station — the busiest and biggest in the Netherlands — right next to Jaarbeurs, the venue for ICBF.

Utrecht is also one of the most cargo bike-friendly places with many initiatives, entrepreneurs, businesses and organizations using cargo bikes.

The ICBF expo, test track and busy stage present many opportunities for cargo-bike and cycling-related businesses and organizations to showcase their offerings.

Last year’s ICBF co-located with Fully Charged’s Home Energy and Electric Mobility show, but due to a date change for the upcoming event in Amsterdam, the organizations parted ways on friendly terms.

Dutch Cycling Week aims to become the world’s largest platform for knowledge sharing, policymaking and stimulation for bicycle use, and the ICBF plans to explore possibilities around this platform in the coming years.

Rimini in Italy to Host 2026 Velo-city Cycling Conference

In late January, the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) announced that the City of Rimini in Italy won the bid to host the 2026 edition of the prestigious Velo-city conference, marking its return to Italy for the first time since 1991. Velo-city is the unrivalled global cycling conference, attracting over 1,500 delegates from more than 60 countries.

One of Rimini’s flagship projects is its 15km waterfront, where grey car-dominated infrastructure was transformed into an urban Sea Park, making room for green areas, cycling, walking, open-air gyms and the creation of more beach space.

The charming city is greener than ever before, and it’s well on its way to reaching 50% of daily trips completed by cycling, walking and public transport via the city’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. The Bicipolitana, a 135km network of bicycle routes connecting the sea, the city and the countryside, further exemplifies Rimini’s commitment to sustainable mobility. The city’s dedication is also evident in the implementation of the bike park strategically located in front of the train station, offering bike rentals and other services.

NYC DOT Authorizes eCargo Bikes on City Streets

On March 27, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) announced the authorization of the use of e-cargo bikes on city streets with new key safety standards established.

The finalized rules increase low- or no-emission options for freight deliveries by allowing the use of pedal-assist e-cargo bicycles that may be up to 48” wide (previously 36”) and have up to four wheels, and up to 192” long (with trailer), up from the original 120-inch limit that would have barred the existing fleets from Whole Foods and Amazon.

To address safety concerns, the e-cargo bike speed limit was reduced from the proposed 20 miles per hour (32kph) to 15 miles per hour (25kph). The rules also establish new curb regulations — a “Commercial Bicycle Loading Only” zone — to allow dedicated space at the curb for cargo bikes to load and unload goods.

NYC DOT will provide e-cargo bike operators with safety training and

educational materials on e-cargo bike use and battery charging.

Since NYC DOT’s launch of its Commercial Cargo Bike pilot program in 2019, cargo bike deliveries have increased significantly in New York City. In 2022, cargo bikes made more than 130,000 trips, delivering over five million packages.

This demonstrates their effectiveness for making deliveries and resulted in the reduction of over 650,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of emissions generated by 1.6 billion miles driven by an average gas-powered passenger vehicle.

Historic European Cycling Declaration Officially Adopted

On April 3, the European Council, Commission and Parliament signed the European Cycling Declaration at Egmont Palace in Brussels, marking the official adoption of the first interinstitutional cycling policy at the European level.

The declaration is the most ambitious EU-level policy initiative to date, recognizing cycling as a strategic priority and acknowledging its power to generate enormous benefits for Europe.

With eight core principles and 36 commitments, this landmark policy describes cycling as one of the “most sustainable, accessible and inclusive, low-cost and healthy forms of transport and recreation, and its key importance for European society and economy.”

The Informal Council meeting saw 27 European Transport Ministers gather to take a major step forward to grow cycling and develop a world-class European cycling industry.

The historic Declaration follows a series of high-level political cycling

commitments, including the Transport Committee of the European Parliament which overwhelmingly voted to adopt the policy.

This monumental milestone for the advancement of cycling in Europe marks the successful collaboration of the European Cyclists’ Federation, Cycling Industries Europe and the Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry (CONEBI), who have long advocated for a unified cycling policy at the European level.

California Confirms $31 Million for eBike Rebates

in 2024

On March 14, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) confirmed that a total of $31 million will now be available for the state’s E-Bike Incentive Project in 2024.

This includes the original $10 million allocation from the legislature, plus the $3 million CARB added, and an additional $18 million that CARB put in its current budget as part of its clean transportation programs. It’s estimated that the program will assist around 15,000 residents.

The announcement was made during a public work group to discuss the current status of the project and get feedback on two possible implementation schedules: make all funds available on the launch date or roll out the vouchers in three stages, one in each of the remaining quarters of 2024.

CalBike favours a phased rollout for voucher distribution. This has been found to increase equity in other programs, most notably the very successful Denver e-bike program.

At the work group, CARB reported that a soft launch is underway and going well, and that the incentive availability timeline would be announced in April.

In late Nov. 2023, Serial 1 Cycle Company, LLC formed by HarleyDavidson back in 2020, was acquired by LEV Manufacturing and Lane VC, a mobility-focused investment firm.

Taipei Cycle 2024 Success

Fuels Cautious Optimism for Industry

Large crowds filled the halls at the Taipei Cycle 2024 event, giving a sense of optimism.

Taipei Cycle ran March 6-9 with a total of 27,000 visitors, including 4,000 international visitors from 80 countries along with 23,000 domestic industry attendees.

The event has grown to a point where it now fills TaiNEX Hall 1 and half of Hall 2, and brings together 950 exhibitors across 3,500 booths.

The show is one of the major showcases for the cycling industry and draws attendees and exhibitors from Asia, Europe and North America.

The top five buyer countries at this year’s event included Japan, China (including Hong Kong), the USA, South Korea, and Singapore.

Walking the aisles of this year’s show there was a sense of optimism that permeated throughout, as evidenced by the size of the crowds that filled the halls. Cycling continues to gain headlines worldwide as many exhibitors hoped to procure business.

Yet the talk at the show was dominated by the current state of affairs that sees high inventories due to low consumer demand. Many bike companies are on hold and not buying more stock until they can clear out some of the overstock. As such, suppliers also have excess inventory, including unfulfilled manufacturing capacity expectations.

Many industry observers suggest that if all goes well, the

current bottleneck is expected to be cleared throughout the first half of this year.

This year’s Taipei Cycle offered a special focus on four key themes: Micro Mobility, Green Action, Startup & Innovation and Cycling Culture and Lifestyle, reflecting the industry’s commitment to sustainability.

E-bikes continued as one of the hottest growth categories at the show with more companies offering many different models and more entries into the e-drive motor category.

Bafang’s booth was busy as usual as the company recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Their compact, lightweight and powerful M820 motor with 75Nm of torque continues to set the bar high as one of the smallest lightest and most powerful mid-assist motors on the market.

Launched last fall, SRAM’s new e-MTB Eagle Powertrain drive system combining its Eagle Transmission and AXS wireless technology, was also on display and creating a buzz.

Powered by a motor manufactured by Brose, it features 90Nm torque and 680W of peak output. The system pairs with a compact 630Wh battery or a high-capacity 720Wh battery with an optional 250Wh range extender also available.

Many industry observers suggest that if all goes well, the current bottleneck is expected to be cleared during the first half of this year.

The new e-drive keeps it simple offering only two power level options, Range Mode for longer routes, and Rally Mode for shorter rides, along with two shifting modes, Auto Shift and Coast Shift for a “seamless and holistic system.”

SR Suntour, renowned for their suspension systems, was showing their 250W HESC rear hub motor that offers 60Nm of torque. Their e-drive system was developed for the utility and gravel bike markets and includes a heavy-duty front shock to absorb the stronger forces.

Hyena introduced their inaugural mid-drive motor, the Unidrive 70, in conjunction with the show. The new compact motor supplies 70Nm of torque and weighs 2.4kg, marking the company’s strategic expansion into the broader e-bike mainstream market. “One of the benefits that we offer is connectivity to the cloud and other devices,” commented company CEO, Charlie Chuang. Hyena also introduced the BS-B540+ integrated battery that’s compatible with the new UniDrive 70, along with their new color screen HMI Vivid Series.

forks and KS dropper seatposts.

More companies are also partnering to create dynamic relationships. Delta, another e-bike motor company, is in development with TRP, a high-end division of global brake supplier Tektro, to launch a small mid-drive motor later this year that features up to 90Nm of torque. This could be something to watch given Tektro’s market reach and experience.

Another key theme at the show was sustainability as the cycling industry aims to demonstrate how it’s embracing an environmental focus. The show featured many companies that are utilizing waste materials to manufacture new products.

Giant Bicycles has launched bottle cages that are made out of recycled fishing nets recovered from the oceans around Taiwan.

Formosa Taffeta, a fabric supplier to global brands such as Patagonia, Nike, Columbia and Adidas, is also using recovered fishing nets to make new nylon material called Seawastex that becomes Etycord, which bcompanies such as Maxxis are using in the beads and casings of their Green Recycle city-bike tires.

Hyena introduced their inaugural Unidrive 70 mid-drive motor.

In fact, the winner of the Taipei Cycle d&I Green award went to Vittoria, based in Lombardia, Italy. Their new Terreno Pro T60 Mixed gravel tire uses 92% of renewable and recycled material in its construction, while maintaining ride quality and durability.

Award-winning reTyre AS, out of Norway, displayed a range of environmental tires made of thermoplastic elastomers that are fully recyclable, sustainable and made without rubber.

With the popularity of micro mobility and e-powered vehicles, the recycling of batteries is also becoming a concern. Phylion Battery Co., a manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries based in China, has developed a sodium ion-based battery that is non-toxic and simple to recycle which promises more charge-cycle life and greater capacity. While mass production is about five years away, this technology could prove to be a boon to e-bikes that are experiencing battery safety issues as well.

One of the surprising trends at the show was e-bikes for kids, as some wondered if they really need any assistance. One manufacturer commented, “It’s so the kids can keep up with their parents who are also on e-bikes.”

Another noticeable trend is the use of belt drives for e-bikes. While they offer a bit more friction compared to chains, this can be easily overcome on an e-bike, and belt drives are much cleaner and easier to maintain.

Of note, Argon 18 was the lone Canadian company showcasing their top-level road and gravel bikes at the show. The gravel line has an interesting storage panel behind the water bottle cage for extra tubes or tools that may be needed to address the demands of gravel riding.

Taipei Cycle has announced its 2025 dates as the show will be held from March 26-29 next year at TaiNEX Halls 1 and 2. If things go according to plan regarding inventories, and the trends and popularity of cycling continue, it will be even busier as companies look to the future for more growth.

eCARGO BIKES MEAN BUSINESS

The logistics and transportation sectors worldwide are evolving at a record pace. Easing congestion and fighting climate change, e-cargo bikes are rapidly emerging as the silver bullet for much-needed green, economical solutions for inner-city, last-mile deliveries. Sales of cargo bikes and e-cargo bikes have been soaring in tandem with e-bikes, the most popular electric vehicle worldwide. The market volume for e-bikes is roughly 200 million units vs 20 million electric cars.

Study after study demonstrates that e-cargo bikes outpace conventional delivery vans, and major industry players are taking notice.

According to the Urban Freight Lab at the University of Washington, e-cargo bikes are more affordable with ownership costs at about 40% of a conventional delivery van. They’re also zero-emission with an estimated total social and environmental cost of 12% of a diesel van and 14% of an electric van.

Global players such as DHL and Schenker have been actively growing their green operations. More heavyweights,

such as FedEx, UPS and Purolator, are now on board as the list keeps growing.

Large institutional delivery entities like Deutsche Post and Post NL have been using e-cargo bikes and e-trikes since 2014 and 2016 respectively. Both US Post and Canada Post are running pilot programs for e-cargo bike deliveries.

Along the way, countless start-ups such as Pedal Me and Zedify in the UK, Cargoroo e-cargo bike sharing in Holland with more than 1,200 units in nine European cities, and retail multinational giants like IKEA have signed on.

Notably, the e-cargo bike movement is rapidly spreading

around the world including Africa, where Wahu and SHOVeBike were recently founded.

According to Europe’s City Changer Cargo Bike (CCCB) Manufacturers and Operators with 22 partners, the average number of e-cargo bikes in European fleets has quadrupled since 2019, and annual sales in Europe are projected to reach 400-500,000 units.

The recent adoption of the landmark inter-institutional European Cycling Declaration in April marked a historic milestone, as cycling now has a seat at the EU transportation table. The declaration is the most ambitious EU-level policy initiative to date, and it recognizes cycling as a strategic priority and acknowledges its power to generate enormous benefits for Europe.

In North America, operators welcomed another recent historic development as New York City’s Department of Transportation (DOT) made a major cargo-bike announcement, allowing longer bike-trailer combinations up to 192” with trailer (previously 120”), and the use of four-wheeled van-like cargo bikes up to 48” wide (previously 36”).

This remarkable victory for sustainable green delivery operations could unleash a true cargo-bike revolution. NYC DOT clearly listened to industry leaders, noting that it

“…made several adjustments to draft rules proposed last year based on feedback received during the public comment period.”

NYC-based DutchX, founded in 2012, has rapidly become an industry leader. Their clients include some of the largest retailers in the world such as Amazon, Club Monaco and Whole Foods.

Co-founders Ariella Azogui and Marcus Hoed combined their unique knowledge of gaps in the retail delivery space, along with complex logistics operations, to become pioneers in the same-day and next-day delivery markets.

Their innovative, proprietary software, Zadar, manages DutchX’s 100% employee-based delivery workforce and complex urban logistics operations. Zadar recently won a Top Software & Tech Award by Food Logistics and Supply & Demand Chain Executive.

“This ground-breaking NYC DOT news signals a new era that’s poised to revolutionize the micromobile delivery

space. DutchX has proactively acquired several electric quadricycles (or “eQuads”) to integrate into our zero-emission fleet as they offer unparalleled versatility in urban delivery. We’re also looking to further expand our fleet to include electric refrigerated box trucks. This exciting news aligns with our sustainability goals and is a significant step towards revolutionizing our operations to lead the way in sustainable logistics,” commented DutchX.

Tern Bicycles, with offices around the world, launched Tern Business in 2018 and targeted its compact utility GSD e-cargo bike to help businesses carry more and do more. Seeing steady growth, the company re-launched its Bikes for Business campaign in 2021 and has never looked back.

“We applaud NYC for taking input from operators into consideration and adjusting their policy accordingly, and we’re very happy with our partnership with DutchX and Cornucopia in NY. Both have very impressive operations in a very difficult working environment, which is a great test of the benefits of e-bikes in logistics service in an urban setting. If e-bikes can succeed in NY then they have a great chance all over the world,” commented Steve Boyd, North American General Manager at Tern Bicycles.

That sentiment was echoed by entrepreneur Ben Morris, CEO of Coaster Cycles and Boston Pedicabs, who noted, “DOT did a nice job of balancing public and private interests.”

Based in Montana, innovative Coaster Cycles offers four models of e-trikes that range from the Venture to the Freighter AW. Coaster supplies e-trikes to Net Zero Logistics as part of the new Boston Delivers initiative, an e-cargo bike delivery pilot program. Their Boston Pedicab operations, launched in 2005, have expanded into San Francisco, Washington, Portland, Chicago, Austin, Santa Monica and more cities.

In Canada, heads turned last October when FedEx Canada added Fulpra’s Roll 3000L models to its electric vehicle fleet via the Dutch company’s Canadian distributor, Allo Velo Inc., based in Montréal. FedEx first tested deliveries with Bullitt e-cargo bikes in mid-2020 as it continues to expand its e-vehicle footprint in Canada and around the globe.

last-mile solutions, but it’s a slow process as the products are new. “We need more incentives for businesses to invest in these types of vehicles to assist in the conversion process,” said Timmins.

In 2021, Purolator became the first Canadian courier company to roll out its green fleet program nationally with both electric delivery trucks and e-cargo bikes. Starting in Vancouver, the program is now in four major cities including Montréal, Toronto and Ottawa.

Montréal, a leader in progressive cycling strategy and advocacy, launched its innovative Colibri e-cargo bike lastmile services project back in 2019 with partners like Purolator.

The new initiative, with a central urban warehouse minihub for sorting packages for last-mile delivery by a fleet of e-cargo bikes, was immediately successful, seeing a 15% increase reaching over 4,000 deliveries per week.

But plans to open additional mini-hubs hit some roadblocks as volumes dropped in 2022, and the City stalled its ambitions until regulations are in place to monitor van deliveries. Also, the mini-hub will close at the beginning of 2025 for a few years, as its current site will undergo a planned transformation.

Toronto’s NRBI (Near By), launched in 2021 by two local entrepreneurs, also saw immediate success creating a mini sensation for e-cargo bike delivery services with their aquamarine-coloured Babboe Pro Trike Centaurs and black Triobike Cargo Big units.

Fast forward to today and the company has expanded into Vancouver and recently tweeted, “Over 105,000 packages have been delivered in Toronto and Vancouver in 2023. By choosing cargo bikes, we have collectively saved 14.5 metric tons of CO2 emissions!”

Vancouver’s Shift Delivery, a worker-owned co-operative, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2021 as a pioneer of sustainable last-mile e-trike inner-city deliveries.

Co-owner Sandra Allen wishes parts were more readily available in North America, noting that green deliveries continue to gain traction but not fast enough “…for us trailblazers. We would also like to see more support and incentives from governments... policy is where a lot of real change happens to truly promote and support city-friendly, green options,” she commented.

The playing field for sustainable e-solutions continues to grow, and there are many more notable operators such as B-Line Sustainable Urban Delivery in Portland, Llama (formerly URB-E) in New York City, Penguin Pickup in Toronto and Vancouver, Zygg E-Bikes also in both cities, Innovobot in Vancouver, and La roue libre in Montréal.

Last fall, many of these companies attended the North American Cargo Bike Conference (NACBC) held during the Fully Charged LIVE Canada event at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Plans for this year’s conference have yet to be released. However, Europe’s industry-leading International Cargo Bike Festival (ICBF) announced that it will be staged in Utrecht from Oct. 25-26 in conjunction with Dutch Cycling Week.

The ICBF boldly declared the 2020s as the #decadeofthecargobike!” which is ringing true as global interest in e-cargo bikes is exploding to answer the call for

better, safer and greener options for public and commercial interests.

While Europe is undoubtedly leading the charge, the North American appetite for e-cargo bike solutions is rapidly gaining traction as more and more companies are delivering quality solutions. Forward-thinking cities, municipalities, politicians and governments are listening.

Based in Burnaby, B.C., Envo Drive Systems is part of a niche group of small companies finding their edge in the e-mobility sector. Their eclectic array of consumer products includes e-bikes, e-ATVs, conversion kits and electric-powered snow and water vehicles.

Envo has seen steady growth since their start in 2015 and is positioning itself to be a major player as the electric mobility revolution continues to grow and evolve.

The innovative company has carved out a conservative business model approach, which has also made them more resilient and capable of weathering unpredictable industry storms.

According to CEO and founder, Ali Kazemkhani, this flexibility helped Envo survive the pandemic. “We rode the Covid wave; even though we were small we were able to do it and come out the other side,” commented Kazemkhani.

Currently, Envo has three locations in Burnaby along with 35 employees. They have seen growth of 750% in revenue (2019–2022) from their 160+ dealers in North America, including Sports Excellence, Costco and Best Buy, and Envo claims to have 4% of the e-bike market in Canada.

They recently received a Clean Technology award as part of Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 program. Launched last year, the new award leadership category recognizes Canada’s top clean innovators providing processes, goods or services that reduce environmental impacts.

house engineers, they’re firmly convinced of this strategy. The concept spreads the technology across all units, with the motors, batteries and a large part of the electronics being shared by all products, from e-bikes to e-ATVs.

Other departments such as marketing, insurance and sales-related items can also be shared by all products. This helps to reduce costs as the company continues to deliver great products at a competitive price, which helps maintain a positive cash flow. It also provides the opportunity to offer unique, specialty items which may not be profitable as standalone products.

Envo’s line of e-bikes features some key models including the D50 and ST50, Stax and Flex. The pedal-assist D50 and ST50 e-bikes are equipped with a throttle and come stock with a suspension fork that offers 80mm of travel, a rear rack, along with fenders and lights, in a ready-to-ride package. The Canadian models have a 500-watt rear hub motor with 80Nm of torque, available as a Class 3, 750-watt model for the US market.

The D50 features a traditional frame design, while the ST50 is the step-through version. The removable 48V-15Ah battery is tucked neatly in the downtube of the aluminum hydroformed frame, and the bike boasts a range of up to 150km which can be extended by an additional battery that can be mounted on the downtube.

The 80kg-capacity rear cargo rack is a great feature as it allows you to add an optional cushioned seat and foot peg accessories so you can carry up to two passengers. Plus, you can swap out the stock 27.5-inch commuter tires for 29-inch MTB tires for e-adventures as well.

The Stax is a cool-looking urban, commuter-style e-bike that sports a sleek grey, rigid frame equipped with a builtin headlight. Sharing the same 500-watt rear hub motor as other Envo products, it pairs with an integrated seatpost and removable 461Wh battery with 100km range. The Stax is stylish as all of the welds are smoothened — and at 42lbs and only $2,469 CAD, it is not only light, but it’s light on the pocketbook.

Their Flex line truly highlights Envo’s versatile approach, as it includes the Overland, a fat-tire, electric and foldable cargo bike, that can easily be transformed into the Flex Snowbike. The line also includes the Flex Trike and the Flex Cargo for commercial deliveries.

The Overland is capable of supporting up to 400lbs of payload and offers a step-through design for easy mounting and dismounting, along with a lockable suspension fork with 80mm of travel. It’s equipped with front and rear racks, riser bars and wide, fat 3.3-inch offroad-style tires. The rear rack, rated up to 150lbs, is also passenger ready, and the 500W motor with a removable 840Wh battery has a 200km range with an extender option.

Envo recently acquired Veemo from bankruptcy, and the iconic 3-wheeled commuter cycling electric vehicle is a promising mobility option. Established in 2014, Veemo provides the benefits of a car without the downsides, while capitalizing on the positive attributes of cycling.

Now in the hands of Envo, the company plans to make it a more affordable, durable and serviceable product. Improvements include replacing the more costly mid-motor with a rear hub version and utilizing a conventional drivetrain. Like all of Envo’s e-bikes, the Veemo will utilize both pedalassist and throttle options. The initial strategy is to produce 50 units for the marketplace and then re-evaluate from there.

At a recent media launch at their Burnaby headquarters, Envo unveiled their latest creation, the Utility Personal Transport (UPT). Created as a “clean alternative to UTV/ATVs, cars, and trucks for specific consumers and industries,” the UPT is a 4-wheeled drive, all-terrain electric vehicle that compacts easily for storage.

It comes with an adjustable, single steering/control column and multiple attachment points with a variety of accessories available, which will allow many different applications.

Each wheel contains a motor, and the unit uses multiple batteries which are identical to those in their other e-vehicles. The UPT has a 12,000W max output with 640Nm of torque, and can reach speeds of 50kph, while boasting a range of up to 200km.

The 250kg payload capacity gives the UPT the advantage to accommodate a variety of applications and to carry many different things such as people, produce, manufactured goods, a stretcher, or even large logs. It also features regenerative braking, along with headlights, tail lights and indicators.

According to Kazemkhani, the UPT will come in lighter, more efficient and at a lower cost than other similar, traditional products. “Just as every pocket holds a cell phone, the future holds a UPT in every garage,” he added.

Our visit to Envo Drive Systems gave us a better understanding of not only where the company came from, but more importantly, where it’s headed. Their business set-up will allow them the freedom to explore innovation, along with the opportunity to find success as they embrace their journey.

In the end, Envo is not your typical business, and in the words of Kazemkhani, “Our mission is not just to make money, but to do something for the planet. This is Envo.”

Stromer Factory Tour: Innovative and Powerful Swiss e-Bikes

Made with Precision for Commuting

Tucked away on a plateau in the town of Oberwangen, just a 15-minute ride from the Swiss capital of Bern, lies Stromer.

Since 2009, myStromer AG has called this place home and has been honing its high-end e-bike niche, manufacturing quality Speed Pedelecs (similar to Class 3 e-bikes in the USA) ever since.

The Stromer Campus is a modernlooking, three-level building where the company manages the majority of its business operations for its 600 global retailers. Home to 121 employees working in various departments, including administration, research and development, engineering, assembly and shipping, it is also the site of Stromer’s flagship concept store.

“It is important to have everything under one roof,” comments Christoph Lindlein, Global Marketing Director. “It also gives us 100% quality control with the ability to react quickly.”

“It’s also important to provide consumers with an opportunity to test the product so they can see firsthand the value they are getting from their investment,” explains Lindlein.

The top floor of the building houses Stromer’s administration offices in a big, open-concept design. Office staff use a “hot desk” approach by taking whatever station is free when they arrive. Even the CEO embraces the “musical desk” approach when starting his workday.

However, the company’s continued growth is putting pressure on their facility’s limited space and has forced them to adapt by utilizing every square inch in a highly organized, structured and efficient manner — with the accuracy and precision of a Swiss clock.

The entrance to the Stromer Campus is via their flagship concept store which carries the company’s full line of e-bikes, along with their newly acquired Desiknio electric bicycles. Just outside of the main door, a demo fleet containing a full selection of their current offerings sits in a neat row.

There’s also a dedicated area featuring Stromer’s many awards and accomplishments, including their recent Red Dot: Best of the Best 2023 Award in the category of Production Design for the ST7 model.

The main floor is where the e-bikes are assembled and shipped out to Stromer’s 25 global markets. As each Stromer is uniquely made for each customer’s individual specifications, this side of the operation requires a sophisticated, well-designed gameplan with complete buy-in from their highly skilled staff.

The assembly line workday begins at 7:20am with a group briefing led by the Team Leader, to ensure a smooth and efficient day. The briefing outlines the day’s agenda and quota, and it highlights key information needed to ensure quality control. The workday ends at 16:45 with another gathering for a debrief.

assembly line. Each frame is then branded with a Vehicle ID # along with a printed sheet which outlines the unique build for that specific frame.

Larger groups of components including wheels, fenders, racks, forks and cockpits are pre-assembled before hitting the assembly line. To facilitate pre-assembly, Stromer taps into a special outside source for workers.

“We have teamed up with a group supporting individuals wanting to integrate back into the workforce, along with groups that work with people with physical challenges like blindness, to handle pre-assembly,” explains Lindlein. “We have found that this saves us about 20 minutes of assembly time while also providing an opportunity for these unique groups of people. It is a win-win partnership.”

Once on the assembly line, each frame is placed on a moveable stand for its journey through eight different stations. A worker at each station is responsible for installing anywhere from 5 to 20 parts on the frame before moving it down the line.

Stromer has two assembly lines, and depending on the model it can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes per station. At full capacity, with both lines in operation, Stromer produces up to 90 bikes per day. On the day of our tour, the company was on schedule to produce 48 complete bikes.

At the end of the line, the serial number on each e-bike is scanned to ensure it has been built to its correct specifications. Then a full logistics test begins from checking the entire electronics system on each e-bike, to ensuring each bolt is tightened to its correct torque. Once completed, the e-bikes head to the packing and shipping department which is one floor down.

Stromer discovered early on that a rear hub motor was the best choice for their road-savvy commuter-style e-bikes.

In July 2022, Stromer unveiled their flagship ST7, the world’s first e-bike to use the Pinion’s Smart.Shift drive system technology, a feature now available on other models as well.

Later that year, Stromer became the official e-bike supplier to the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team vying for the 37th annual America’s Cup in the sport of sailing, the oldest international trophy in world sport. A limited edition custompainted ST7 ARBR-SE e-bike, complete with a logo-embossed leather bag, was also released — only 350 will be produced to mark the occasion.

With nothing available on the market to meet their standards, they began producing their own line of motors inhouse, along with designing batteries to match.

According to Stromer, their rear hub motors produce more thrust, are quieter, and are 20% more efficient than other motors on the market. “We have always used rear hub motors,” comments Fabienne Gilliéron, Stromer’s Communication Manager. “They’re the most efficient for commuting.”

The company currently produces five motors and four batteries, with each motor unique to each of Stromer’s five e-bike models. The motors range from the 670-watt CYRO Drive II with a 655Wh battery and a range of 120km available on the ST1, all the way up to the massive 940-watt SYNO

In North America, there are currently 50 dealers offering Stromer’s full line of e-bikes. To meet the legal Class 1 restrictions in Canada (32kph) and other markets where Speed Pedelecs are not permitted, the motors are tuned down to match the required max speed limits.

The company’s new strategic alliance to merge with Desiknio Cycles SL in Spain is designed to open up new markets as Stromer’s Speed Pedelecs are more suited for commuter routes of 15km or more, while Desiknio’s premium e-bikes are best for inner-city traffic.

Stromer’s unique business model has seen the company survive the pandemic and the recent challenges experienced by other e-bike companies during these current unpredictable economic times. In fact, Stromer saw a 17% increase in sales globally in 2022.

Stromer’s current upward trajectory in growth has put a strain on the available space at their current facility. The search for a larger, ideally one-level building has not come to fruition. With a desire to maintain the current workforce, any move would need to be within a 20km radius.

But with nothing currently available, they have opted to stay put and are working with architects on a major renovation planned for later this year.

Stromer’s future plans will keep them quite busy over the upcoming years. They have positioned themselves well to continue their expansion with Speed Pedelecs, and they have diversified their portfolio with quality partnerships like Desiknio.

Along with Oberwangen, they currently have three additional global facilities based in Den Bosch, Netherlands, Cluj, Romania and in Vista, California, with the possibility of more in the works.

With their planned renovations in Oberwangen, including expanding their concept stores into new markets, Stromer will continue to make waves well into the future, from where it all started — in Switzerland.

TQ Group: Global Tech Player’s Unique eDrive System is a Powerhouse

TQ Group began in 1994 in a lovely part of rural Bavaria, just west of Munich, in a region surrounded by lakes. From a storage unit in a barn, founders Detlef Schneider and Rüdiger Stahl began working with electronic components and embedded systems.

From those humble beginnings, TQ has grown into a global player, developing electronic systems for multiple industries including aviation, robotics, automation, medical and now e-mobility with their innovative HPR50 e-drive system.

The two founders were born and raised in the area and wanted to maintain a German, family-run business model. This included creating jobs for local residents, as well as investing in and maintaining the community.

Today, TQ’s Global HQ has taken over the entire sprawling farm site where they started back in 1994, and they’ve since added five other facilities within the same region of Inning am Ammersee and Seefeld.

TQ, which stands for Technology in Quality, has remained a privately owned company, a move which has proven to be an important part of their success. Without having to answer to shareholders,

or fast-track products to market, TQ has the luxury of allowing their products to develop organically, staying true to their company values.

Their business model has also proven to be somewhat immune to both major global impacts and extreme shifts in the economy. During the Covid-19 pandemic, TQ’s steady growth in their workforce levelled off but did not decline.

TQ also has a proven track record in motor design with robotics manufacturing, as well as in the service and surgical tools involved with open heart surgery. The company is also involved in prosthetics and the aerospace industry. We’re even told that one of their robots is a dancing sensation on YouTube!

Applying their motor technology to e-bikes seemed a natural pathway; TQ first embarked on its e-bike journey in 2008, and they developed an e-drive division four years later in 2012. The success of their patented harmonic pin-ring technology, initially created for the aerospace sector, was a natural fit for e-bike applications.

wave generator and two gears — internal and external — which sit on a central axis and are connected by a flexible pin-ring transmitter.

The unique e-drive system can achieve the required reduction between the rider’s pedalling revolutions and the motor in just one step, with a reduction ratio that is about a third of other systems, which need several steps. The compact, lightweight and quiet system also provides one of the highest torque-to-power densities on the market.

TQ’s first e-bike motor boasted 120Nm of torque, which dwarfed most of the other systems. The company’s research team got to work on refining things and in 2018, a partnership developed with Trek that led TQ on a new pathway. In 2022, they released the HPR50, a more naturally intuitive motor and e-drive system that debuted on Trek’s Fuel EXe electric mountain bike that was launched in the summer of that year.

With 50Nm of torque and 300 watts of peak power, the new lightweight motor (1,850g) and compact drive system delivered a very natural ride feeling. The new system features a Q factor of only 135mm, which allows for the same natural and efficient feel on the pedals as analog bikes.

The HPR50 was engineered and produced in a building not far from the company headquarters. TQ landed in this location five years ago when the tenants pulled out, allowing the company to continue growing within their hometown. The workforce has morphed from 60 employees three years ago to over 200 people, in part due to the success of their new e-bike motor division.

The new location houses the engineering and production divisions together in the same building, a move that created a positive and productive environment for developing the HPR50. Communication between each sector is ongoing, and with the research and development division nearby, any input or modifications can be executed quickly and efficiently.

“We are all avid cyclists. We can ride, develop and test our product all in-house — we’re both tech nerds and bike enthusiasts,” explains Anna Vodickova, TQ’s Product Marketing Manager.

TQ’s business model also allows production levels of the HPR50 to remain high, while the inventory of in-house parts is low, because most of the system’s components come from one of its own nearby facilities. The single assembly line utilizes both humans and robots with the former handling the more technical aspects of the build, while the robots perform

the more mundane, repetitive jobs. In fact, even the robots are made in-house.

To ensure the highest of standards, once the assembly of each HPR50 unit is complete, it’s placed in a machine that runs through its parameters and system functions. This process is followed by a more rigorous set of tests to ensure that each motor meets TQ’s top-grade production standards.

The result is that the HPR50 is 100% German-made, and TQ has complete control over all the parts and assembly needed to create the motor and drive system.

The system’s compact 360-watt and lightweight battery (1,830g) was specifically developed for the HPR50 drive unit for maximum efficiency. Integrated seamlessly into the downtube, it can be augmented by an optional 160Wh range extender battery, which is the size of a 500ml water bottle and can fit into any standard bottle cage.

The minimalistic bar-mounted ring-sized mode assist remote is almost imperceptible as well.

The HPR50 App is used to customize the motor’s parameters and access support centre communications. The system is also compatible with other computer units in the marketplace to accommodate additional data-savvy riders.

The complete package weighs just 3,900 grams, and it’s claimed to be the lightest e-bike drive system in its category.

“Our philosophy is to be very stealth, to be about the rider and the bike... not the system. It’s not about the numbers, and all about the feel. With TQ it’s more like having a Bike+, not an e-bike,” adds Vodickova.

Close to a dozen more bike companies have come on board, including top-level players like Scott, BMC and Pinarello.

As e-bikes continue to grow worldwide, TQ is well poised to continue on its current trajectory by maintaining and growing their diverse range of products with quality and innovation leading the charge.

Coming from a company with roots in the aerospace industry, it looks like the sky’s the limit.

Royal Dutch Gazelle Has Been Delivering Quality Bikes for Over 130 Years

Royal Dutch Gazelle has created a unique place for itself in Dieren, a small town with a population close to 14,000, in the mid-west part of the Netherlands, just a short train ride east of Amsterdam.

For over 130 years, Gazelle has delivered quality bikes from this same location and played a major role as a bike company, a key employer, and a tourist attraction, shaping the world-class cycling culture in the Netherlands.

In the late 1800s, Willem Kölling’s vision of a great future for the bicycle saw him find a partner in Rudolf Arentsen. The two resold bicycles imported from England, and the pair operated repairs and service.

They quickly outgrew their original business model and location which led them to purchase a piece of land in Dieren, where they built their factory. Named after the deer that roamed the local forest, Gazelle still calls this place home, and it’s the oldest bicycle factory in the Netherlands.

Today, Gazelle’s operations in Dieren are a blend of

the past and the present. The massive 35,550-square-metre facility is home to their assembly plant, global headquarters and Experience Centre. It retains a portion of the original red brick factory and houses their entire operations, which supports over 2,700 dealers worldwide.

Recent renovations to the assembly plant and the new Experience Centre have seen the original red brick structure evolve into a modern, bright, glass and steel facility. Over 500 employees make this their daily place of work.

Opened in 2022, the Dieren Experience Centre is one of six that Gazelle spearheaded globally. This multi-dimensional place is part showroom, part museum, part test facility. The Experience Centre has become more than just a place for those looking to buy bikes. It has also become a tourist destination with groups and individuals coming from far and wide to enjoy the facility and its offerings.

help navigate visitors through the many offerings on display. Those interested in purchasing a bike will then be directed to one of Gazelle’s 700 dealers in the Netherlands.

Off to the side of the showroom is a test track with a slight hill to help simulate the benefits of their e-bikes. It’s also partly covered by a glass roof so one can stay dry under rainy skies.

Gazelle opened its first Experience Center in 2011 in Amersfoort, Holland. Today it has six centers in the Netherlands, six in Germany, one in Belgium, one in Denmark, and one in the USA. Opened in 2014, the US center is located in Santa Cruz, California, and a big motivator was to help the company’s North American ambitions of “getting more people on bikes and making riding easier, safer and more fun”.

At the Dieren Experience Centre, a large open staircase leads upstairs to the Gazelle Museum that offers self-guided tours complete with headphones and a recording in the language of your choice. The tour takes you through 22 different stations highlighting the history of Gazelle. There are many unique and interesting memorabilia on display along with fascinating tidbits of information.

For example, Gazelle launched its first e-bike in 1932 but it didn’t take off, and when the company revisited the concept again in 1990 the timing was better. Now 70% of the bicycles they produce are e-bikes.

The tour continues down a hallway to a walkway overlooking the factory and assembly plant. The factory was part of the renovations which started in 2014 when Pon Holdings, a global Dutch-owned conglomerate, acquired Gazelle Holding B.V. and began investing in the company.

As you move through the factory, your senses become engaged from the smell of rubber to the sound of an exploding tube. The assembly plant starts with the raw frames receiving their five coats of paint and being hand-decaled. Most parts, such as fenders and racks, get pre-assembled before they hit the assembly line.

Available through their 348 retail outlets in the USA and Canada, Gazelle’s line of e-bikes are geared towards commuter, sport and leisure cyclists. All e-bikes come complete with front suspension, rear racks and lights, and are equipped with Bosch motors.

The North American line-up includes the Medeo, Ultimate, Arroyo, Avignon and now the Eclipse. The Medeo is a price point, family-oriented bike with geometry on the sporty side. Moving up to the Ultimate, there are seven models including the top-tier C380 HNB which is equipped with Enviolo shifting and a Gates carbon belt drive.

The Arroyo and Avignon deliver a more comfort-oriented dimension with low step-through frames and a relaxed geometry. The Avignon is Gazelle’s most comfortable bike boasting wider tires, a comfort curved handlebar, and an internal suspension headset, that takes the edge off road chatter, a feature we enjoyed during our test ride.

Wheels are even made in-house, which few bike manufacturers can claim. Once at the assembly line, the bikes are placed on an automated belt to go through 27 stations until completed. There are three assembly lines; when all are in full operation, Gazelle can produce a bicycle every 30 seconds. The factory has the capacity to produce 100 e-bikes per day.

The company has embraced e-mobility and produces 32 e-bike models in the Netherlands, which makes up the majority of its current line of bicycles. In North America, Gazelle offers five e-bikes, including their new Eclipse that was recently unveiled.

The release of the new Eclipse brings a new level of e-bike enjoyment to North American riders. Already a fixture in European markets, it’s designed to provide comfort, power and range to take the path less travelled.

“We can see this bike being a good allround, commuter-style bike in North America where here in Holland, it is used much more as an adventure e-bike,” commented our tour guide Liset Dissel-Dijkerman, Brand Marketer.

The new Eclipse comes in two models, the T11 HMB and C380 HMB, both powered by Bosch’s top-tier Performance Line CX motor with 85Nm of torque. These front suspension bikes offer high- or low-step frame options and come in two colour waves. Gazelle engineered the downtube on the Eclipse to accommodate a 750-watt battery, with a maximum range of 135 km for extended adventure days in the saddle.

What sets the two models apart is the drivetrain. The T11 uses a Shimano XT 11-speed shifter, derailleur set-up, while the C380 comes equipped with an Enviolo stepless shifting gear hub with Gates Carbon belt drive.

In Europe, both bikes come complete with Gazelle’s Connect theft protection, which makes it traceable by GPS if the bike goes missing. In North America it’s available as an add-on for $100 with the first year of the subscription being free.

Royal Dutch Gazelle’s storied past is an important part of brand loyalty, which it hopes to pass along to the next generation. The Québec City region is home to five amazing trail networks that boast some of the best mountain-biking trails anywhere in the world.

Vallée Bras-du-Nord features 100km of superb singletrack on two trail systems. Shannahan’s 70km of trails welcome beginners and families on the Delaney Falls route, while advanced riders can stretch their legs on Boréale, Légende and Neilson. The new Gravity sector, with its Bikepark-style trails, features jumps, berms and technical descents.

Intermediate to advanced riders will love SaintRaymond’s 30km of well-cut narrow paths near the village, with short climbs and descents that are sure to bring a smile before enjoying a well-deserved pint at a microbrewery.

In partnership with Bikeskills, an exclusive mountainbike coaching academy for beginners and experienced riders, Sentiers du Moulin offers a full range of clinics, private lessons, as well as corporate and guiding services.

Le Massif de Charlevoix delivers unique and unforgettable mountain biking experiences on nearly 40km of mountain-bike trails. Discover the longest vertical drop east of the Rockies, along with 23 downhill enduro-style trails.

A new upper-skill zone allows you to progress on turns and jumps. At the base of the mountain, a second zone allows you to learn the skills required for mountain biking. Plus, Le Massif has also teamed up with the Sentier des Caps to offer nearly 6km of adventure bike loops, while families can enjoy the 3km in the Cerise sur le Sundae trail with breathtaking views of the river.

Located near Lac Delage, only 20 minutes from Québec City, Empire 47 is the ideal place for families and school groups. The venue features more than 70km of well-maintained mountain-bike trails for riders of all levels. Their new MTB school, Evolution 47, is great for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.

A relatively easy loop connects most of the trails with intermediate-level routes. A second summit features the new Nosferatu, a unique, expert, freeride trail with more than 40 gaps and jumps. More than 40 dedicated, professional and trained patrollers offer valuable advice, with assistance available in case of emergency.

The new 34-mile Adirondack Rail Trail is destined to be one of the nation’s premier, yearround recreation trails.

Adirondack Rail Trail

The Adirondack region of New York State is a cycling mecca with fabulous scenic country roads, impressive landscapes and sparkling waters.

The latest addition to their stunning array of cycling opportunities is the new 34-mile Adirondack Rail Trail (ART) that is destined to be one of the nation’s premier, year-round recreation trails for bicyclists, runners, walkers, birders and wheelchair users, as well as for snowmobiles, snowshoeing and skiing in winter.

The rail trail is a key component of the recently completed 2020 Remsen-Lake Placid Travel Corridor Unit Management Plan (UMP) Amendment, which provides a blueprint for sustainably developing the picturesque 119-mile travel corridor as both a rail trail and a scenic railroad to bolster tourism and further recreation opportunities.

Phase 1 of the ART from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake, a 9.9-mile section, has been completed. Lake Placid, home to two Winter Olympics, is a major tourist destination, and Saranac Lake is the largest village in the Adirondacks. Both offer many restaurants, inns, hotels, historical sites and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Phase 2, from Saranac Lake to Floodwood, features 15.25 miles and a change in scenery as the terrain becomes wilder, with lake crossings, wetlands, woods and open fields. The Floodwood area has opportunities to swim, fish or picnic.

The final 8.4-mile section takes you from Floodwood to Tupper Lake where you’ll find the Wild Center, formerly known as the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks. This delightful museum has amenities for all ages, a cafeteria and a gift shop.

The planned super-smooth bike surface will initially end here and is slated to be completed in 2025. Featuring no more than a 2% grade, the trail is open to people of all ages and abilities, and Class 1 e-bikes are allowed.

Founded in 2010, the Adirondack Rail Trail Association (ARTA) is a trail-town not-for-profit organization that represents and promotes the business and municipal interests along the trail and represents over 13,000 citizens, 400 businesses and six representative governments. ARTA is funded by grants, donations, member dues, underwriting, sponsorships and merchandise sales.

The trail is open to people of all ages and abilities, and Class 1 e-bikes are allowed.

At 1,050km, the Meuse Cycle Route is one of the shortest members of the EuroVelo family. It’s also one of the newest routes, joining the network in 2019.

Following one of the most important rivers in Europe through France, Belgium and the Netherlands, this attractive EuroVelo 19 cycling adventure, featuring three UNESCO World Heritage sites, has quickly become one of the top five most popular routes.

Welcoming cyclists of all levels, your journey begins at the source of the Meuse River on the Langres Plateau in the village of Pouilly-en-Bassigny in Haute-Marne. Ride to Neufchâteau, an area that boasts rich architectural heritage, and then head through Joan of Arc territory as you pass numerous fortifications, to the Verdun Memorial.

As you exit Verdun, try the Vélo Rail in Forges-sur-Meuse and make a stop at the European Museum of Beer in Stenay. Then it’s on to Le Château Fort de Sedan to take in the largest fortified castle in Europe before reaching CharlevilleMézières, the gateway to the Ardennes.

The Meuse has cut its path between Monthermé to Givet, as the route takes you through the wildest part of the French Ardennes with remarkable viewpoints and rock formations.

As you enter Belgium en route to the imposing fortifications of the Namur Citadel, explore Hierges with its medieval château and Givet dominated by the Fort Charlemont. Take time to visit Namur, the region’s largest city and capital of Wallonia, as you head to Liège.

Along the way, don’t miss the Ramioul Prehistomuseum, one of the largest museums of prehistory in Europe. In Liège, an impressive new cycle-pedestrian bridge connects the Guillemins district to the recently opened “La Boverie” Museum.

The Dutch part of the Meuse Cycle route offers ferries that allow you to cycle from the Netherlands to Belgium and back in an afternoon — an absolute must. Then it’s on to the historical city centre of Roermond across Northern Limburg, as you pass the dragon’s village of Beesel where, every seven years, the legend of St. George and the dragon is acted out.

At Den Bosch, known as a magnificent fortress city that hosts many nationally renowned cultural events, explore the many cozy restaurants and cafés. From Den Bosch, head to the fortified town of Woudrichem before continuing on through the Biesbosch National Park.

Visit the island of Dordrecht, and then cycle on top of dykes through the Hoeksche Waard National Landscape and view ships along the New Waterway known as the “Gateway to Rotterdam” as you reach the end of this stellar cycling adventure. Rotterdam is part of a cycling junction network with more than 600km of bike paths to explore.

Cycling Cities on the Move

The advent of e-bikes and e-cargo bikes is helping to spearhead the movement towards communities based on two wheels. From efficiency, climate action, health, congestion, parking, equality and independence, more and more cities are making active transportation and cycling a priority to build stronger and smarter mobility networks so their residents have access to sensible green options. In this edition, we highlight three innovative cities on the move to a better future.

Edmonton approved $100 million for their massive 2023-2026 Bike Plan.

Edmonton, Alta. – Population 1,568,000

In early Dec. 2022, Edmonton turned heads when city council approved $100 million to implement their massive 2023-2026 Bike Plan.

A total of 678 kilometres of bike routes have been identified, with nearly 300 kilometres representing cycling connector routes between neighbourhoods and another 390km of routes within neighbourhoods — approximately 200km represent new cycling paths.

The city is home to more than 1,300km of cycling routes including 15km of protected bike lanes, about 1% of the city’s network, which is mostly made up of shared pathways. In 2024, approximately 17km of the new network will be completed.

Bicycle trips in Edmonton have nearly doubled over the past 10 years, and the City’s new Bike Plan aims for a goal of 50% of all trips to be made by transit and active transportation, up from the current 23%.

According to the city’s Energy Transition Strategy, Edmonton still has one of the highest per capita levels of greenhouse gas emissions in the world with transportation accounting for 31% of total emissions. The Bike Plan, which should be fully implemented by 2030, is part of the city’s strategy to reduce emissions by up to 85%.

The City also plans to improve and expand its end-of-trip facilities, such as bike parking, along with wayfinding, shared micro-mobility, education and encouragement programs.

This past February, Edmonton hosted the Winter Cycling Congress. Edmonton’s active pathways are assigned a snow-clearing priority level, and the WinterCity Strategy aims to execute a cultural shift to ease the challenges, inconveniences and dangers of winter mobility. Up to one out of four residents continue to ride throughout the winter.

Local community cycling advocacy group Bike Edmonton offers refurbished bikes and parts, runs workshops on how to repair bikes, and teaches safe and effective riding. Coffee Outside is an outdoor cycling coffee club that brings people together year-round to socialize, share information and encourage outdoor activity

The Safe Mobility Strategy 2021-2025 is Edmonton’s new approach to advancing Vision Zero and supports the Bike Plan’s safety strategy as an overarching, uncompromised, foundational aspect of bike infrastructure and programming.

Increased biking is another important way to improve the health and well-being of residents, as currently about 43% of Albertans do not achieve the minimum daily recommended levels of physical activity.

Boston has a real cycling mayor in Michelle Wu, and the City has initiated bold plans for transforming its streets to better serve people who are walking, rolling, and riding bikes.

The current cycling network includes 59 miles of offstreet paths, 29 miles of separated bike lanes, and 15 miles of neighbourhood routes. Over the next two years, the city plans to complete 12 more miles of high-comfort bike facilities and close gaps on low-stress bike routes.

Other projects are in the works as the city updates its long-range Go Boston 2030 transportation plan, while expanding the bicycle network so that 50% of its residents will be a 3-minute walk from a safe and connected bike route.

According to a survey by MassINC Polling Group in 2021, 50% of Boston respondents would ‘probably’ or ‘definitely’ bike more if separated bike lanes were in their neighbourhood. A whopping 77% of Boston respondents supported building separated bike lanes, even if some space for driving or parking was removed.

According to Go Boston 2030, the City plans to increase the modal share of cycling from 2% to 10%.

Along with prioritizing biking and walking across the City’s agencies, more than half of the 58 projects in the Action Plan are underway, including building 15 Neighborhood Slow Streets zones to traffic-calm residential streets, completing 15 miles of protected bike lanes, and making improvements at 15 corridors with safety challenges over the next four years.

In addition, the city’s Bluebikes Bike Share program supports 4,000+ bikes, and 400+ stations, while servicing 13 municipalities. Ridership is up about 20% over last year, and the system is slated to grow by 40% while adding more than 100 new stations. In December 2023, e-bikes were added to the program — a total of 750 units are initially planned.

In the fall of 2023, the City launched Boston Delivers, an 18-month pilot program to provide on-demand delivery services by e-cargo bike in the neighbourhoods of Allston and Brighton.

In spring 2024, an e-bike incentive two-year pilot program is planned to provide a discount to seniors, adults with disabilities, and low-income residents. The city expects to support about 1,000 Boston residents in purchasing an e-bike.

Safety is another key issue. In May 2023, Mayor Wu and Chief of Streets Jascha Franklin-Hodge announced the City’s Safety Surge, a new street safety program designed to curb speeding, reduce crashes, and make neighbourhoods more comfortable and safer for walking, biking and driving.

The local speed limit is 25mph (40kph) and speed bumps will be installed in 30 more community zones, starting with 10 in 2024. A total of 75 raised crosswalks at parks, libraries, community centres and schools are planned as well.

Vision Zero Boston prioritizes safety and takes a peoplefirst approach to transportation and community building.

The city plans to increase the modal share of cycling from 2% to 10%.

Safety Surge is a new street safety program

Ghent, Belgium - Population 270,000

Belgium’s third-largest city Ghent implemented its first bicycle plan back in 1993. However, it wasn’t until a bold Traffic Circulation Plan was implemented in 2017 that cycling truly skyrocketed.

The innovative new plan encouraged less car use, more bicycling and more transit use by preventing through traffic from entering the city centre. In addition, the city was split into seven distinct zones: a mostly car-free city centre core surrounded by six zones that were cordoned off with concrete and planters, or controlled by cameras.

As such, in six years, the modal share of cyclists increased from 22% in 2012, to 30% in 2015, and to 35% in 2018, thereby achieving the city’s 2030 target much earlier than projected in its 2015 Mobility Plan. Currently, 61% of Ghent’s residents choose sustainable modes of transport: walking, cycling or public transport.

The city boasts an extensive network of 411km of cycling infrastructure, featuring 24 bicycle streets designed as safe zones and magnets for cyclists. In addition, over 20 school streets are established each school morning by enthusiastic parents and teachers who volunteer their time.

Within the city ring and surrounding neighbourhoods, a 30kph speed limit was implemented, and currently there are 40% fewer cars on bicycle-priority streets than before the plan.

Ghent’s ambitious bicycle parking policy has seen the installation of around 8,500 bicycle parking spaces since 2015, including bicycle racks for both regular bikes and cargo bikes. In subsequent years, the city aims to provide bicycle parking within 100 metres of every resident’s doorstep. Ghent is also investing in bicycle parking facilities whereby locals can rent a covered and closed bicycle parking space.

The use of bicycle share has also increased sharply to 653,819 rides, up 170% over 2022, with e-bikes playing an important role. Three companies support the services including Donkey Republic with 500 regular bikes, Dott with

Belgium’s Blue-bike bicycle-sharing system, at more than 100 railway stations, is also in Ghent.

The plan also includes an integral cycling policy with the Cycling Embassy of Ghent (De Fietsambassade) founded in 2021, a non-profit organization that provides bicycle services such as parking, repair and knowledge sharing. The nonprofit promotes bicycle use, including rentals of e-bikes, cargo bikes, folding bikes and adapted bikes.

With its progressive cycling agenda, Ghent won the bid to host Velo-city 2024, taking place June 18-21, becoming the first Belgian city to host the conference since Brussels in 2009. The Cycling Embassy of Ghent is one of the organizers of the event.

Trek’s Fuel EXe 8 GX AXS T-Type eMTB is now available in aluminum frame options at a lower price point.

We were stoked to test Trek’s Fuel EXe 8 GX AXS T-Type, the aluminum version of their new eMTB model that was released last summer and is now available at a lower price point to appeal to more riders.

The specs on this electric mountain bike are impressive, and at the heart of this trail-ready ride is TQ’s award-winning 250-watt HPR50 drive system with 50Nm of torque, and its unique harmonic pin-ring transmission.

This compact lightweight motor delivers quiet, natural support to flatten climbs and pairs with a 360W removable battery that’s neatly integrated into the downtube.

There are three power levels (Eco, Mid, High) that are easily accessed via a small controller switch on the handlebars and deliver noticeable assistance increases, ranging from 13% to 70% of your watt output.

The stopping power is also taken care of by SRAM with DB 8 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes.

The Bontrager Arvada saddle comes perched atop the dropper post and it features hollow chromoly rails. The stem, grips and 780mm-wide aluminum handlebars are also by Bontrager, along with the 29-inch wheelset that features Boost spacing and thru-axles. The tires, which are tubeless-ready and include TLR sealant, are a big fat width of 2.5”.

I rode in Eco mode for most of the test, as it was all that was needed to tackle any climb in the same gearing that I’m used to. The feeling is like having an extra set of legs that allow you to ride the way you usually do, only better. When the HPR50 drive is assisting, there is no discernible noise coming from the motor — it’s quiet.

Long, sustained climbs were no longer leg burners, as the Fuel EXe helped me up every incline without building up lactic acid in my legs. I was also able to talk and drink on climbs which can be tough in non-e-bike conditions.

The computer is mounted in the top tube of the frame… nice.

The Fuel EXe was also very forgiving, as the suspension efficiently absorbed the trail chatter and big hits. I was initially a bit concerned about the width of the handlebars, but that quickly faded away when the trail turned downhill. The extra stability that the bars offered was amazing and gave me more confidence to let it go on the descents.

The wide Bontrager tires were also a nice benefit in the rougher parts of the trail as they just rolled over everything. The wider tires also helped in the technical sections by making it easier to roll through rock gardens and fields of baby head rocks.

Braking was easily managed with one finger as the SRAM DB8 hydraulics provide powerful stopping force that is easily modulated to allow for smooth braking in corners as well.

Keep in mind that while the Fuel EXe isn’t as heavy as some other e-bikes, it still weighs in at 20.5kg which can push you to higher speeds on descents if you aren’t watching your momentum.

The SRAM wireless shifting was crisp and fast, and the shifter was large enough that I never missed a shift by missing the button. Gear changes even under power on climbs were also fast and smooth.

I easily got in eight hours of ride time while in Eco mode and still had about 20% of charge left. Charging was also easily done while the removable battery was in the bike via a small port that has a rubber cover. If you’re in a hurry, a full charge only takes a few hours. Riese & Müller’s Packster 70 is a popular choice for families and tradespeople alike.

The handling, power, and comfort features impressed us as we put the bike through its paces.

as well. Our test model didn’t have rear suspension, but the Packster2 version includes it for a fully shock-free riding experience.

Although the bike is hefty, weighing in at approximately 100lbs/45kg, the powerful Bosch Cargo Line Cruise motor is more than up to the task. We carried a variety of loads, weighing up to 200lbs/90kg (overall), as well as towing a trailer that hauled another heavy cargo bike. The motor, with up to 400% of support, never hesitated, pumping out up to 85Nm of torque to start smoothly and tackle hills with confidence.

The internal computer calculates stroke pressure and cadence 1,000 times a minute, resulting in a smooth, natural boost from the moment you step on the pedals. The Bosch Nyon display is informative and easy to use, and the Enviolo grip shift with its cute “cyclist on a hill” graphic is intuitive and sensitive.

With its internal Enviolo 380 hub featuring stepless shifting technology, and Gates Belt Drive CDX, the drivetrain is quiet, smooth and nearly maintenance-free — even in winter!

As the mobility landscape embraces more e-cargo bikes for families and businesses, we were stoked to test the Coaster Cycles Venture 1.0 e-cargo trike designed for commercial use for both large and small operations.

The large, easy-to-read, bar-mounted Bosch Intuvia Control Center offers five power levels including the ever-sovaluable Walk Assist.

Smooth manual shifting is delivered by Enviolo’s stepless internal-geared rear hub with a 380% gear range. The chain drive, with a coverbelt system, provides smooth, seamless gear changes.

The three 26-inch wheels feature Schwalbe 2.35” Pickup cargo bike tires, and the stopping power is courtesy of heavy-duty Tektro hydraulic disc brakes along with front/rear parking brake options.

Out on the road, the Venture immediately showed its true colours with smooth handling and acceleration. Keep in mind that three-wheeled trikes, like any new machine, need a bit of time to get used to. Taking corners in a wide, controlled manner is key to avoid any tipping sensation, and the warning sticker on the top tube acts as a reminder.

In urban settings, the Venture is ready to take its place for what it’s designed for — short haul, cargo deliveries. Like most cargo bikes, the large cargo box fills the bike lane and other riders will need to use the outside lane to pass.

Company branding is also available as an option.

Parking this type of e-cargo trike can also be a challenge at times, but when compared to vans there are fewer issues. To secure the Venture, I activated the front and rear parking brakes along with the Abus locks for the frame and battery.

The Venture also comes equipped with fenders, a handy bell and front/rear lights that were much appreciated as I pedalled home at dusk.

UL Certified, the Coaster Venture has undergone both UL 2271 (battery) and UL 2849 (overall drive system) testing to ensure that it’s been thoroughly inspected and certified.

Fulpra 2000L eCargo Trike for Commercial Deliveries is Ready for Business

The Fulpra Roll 2000L is an innovative e-cargo trike that’s designed to replace vans for last-mile deliveries

In a relatively short time, the business side of e-cargo bikes has rapidly evolved into a force to be reckoned with globally. Formed in 2020, Dutch manufacturer Fulpra Motors B.V. became the first commercial e-cargo bike to gain EU approval in the L1 category.

With the tagline “last-mile deliveries re-invented,” the company’s unique trike set-up features three models, including the Pickup (open box), the Roll 2000L, and the Roll 3000L, each with load capacities up to 350kg.

In early October, FedEx Canada announced that it was adding Fulpra to its fleet of electric vehicles. Following this news, we were stoked when given the opportunity to test a Fulpra Roll 2000L via their Canadian distributor, Allo Vélo Inc., based out of Montréal.

Fulpra is the SUV of e-cargo bikes and ranks high in capabilities and weight capacity. Being the founder of a cargo-bike delivery company in Montréal called La Roue Libre, that favours electrically assisted cargo bikes, we couldn’t wait to saddle up on Fulpra’s Roll 2000L.

The features on this 3-wheeled e-cargo bike are

impressive, as it measures 3.25m in length which is somewhat imposing, yet its 1.00m width allows you to ride on cycle paths and get to most places that most other cargo bikes can reach.

The height of the rear cargo area on our 2000L test model was 1.20m, but this varies depending on the model chosen.

The remarkable 130Nm of torque power delivered by the double 250W motor set up (500W in total) to the rear-wheel drive is essential for moving heavy loads. The empty unit itself is quite heavy at 250kg, and the overall payload limit is 600kg.

The pedal-assist features five power levels that can reach a maximum speed of 32kph. A handy grip throttle acts as a walk-assist, and as a power boost to help start the unit which we used many times. In addition, the automatic shifting is another nice feature allowing you to focus on the road ahead.

The Fulpra e-cargo trike is supported by either a 1900Wh or a 2200Wh Cleantron battery with a range of 30–50km depending on the battery size, terrain and load weight. This can be expanded via an extra battery for an additional range of up to 100km. To fully charge the battery, just plug it into any power outlet for about four hours.

Unique loading with a capacity of up to 350kg

The large rear cargo box’s unique set-up features five access points with two sliding doors on each side and a rear door as well. The Roll 2000L also comes with a centre shelf to allow upper- and lower-level package storage. The larger Roll 3000L model comes with two roll containers that can accommodate a variety of packages, and they can be onand off-loaded via two sturdy transport ramps.

The empty rear cargo box can also support pallets, crates and other gear – we were able to easily fit in an e-bike for transport. The box doors are all lockable, as is the cargo bike itself with a steering lock — all can be activated via an ignition key.

Designed for riders between 163cm and 198cm, the cockpit has the feel of a motorcycle which is enhanced by the Fulpra’s unique tilting system technology that makes for optimal road handling, riding comfort and stability when getting off and on at delivery locations.

The small turning radius of 3.5m also helps to keep you steady on curves and allows the unit to be turned around if needed. But keep in mind that the size and weight of this e-trike will be a factor in cramped or restricted spaces that are narrow or uneven. Fulpra suggests pushing the unit backwards if required.

comfortable, but like any new e-cargo bike it takes a bit of time to get used to. The e-drive system is powerful, well-calibrated, and not too noisy.

The larger size of the Fulpra along with the suspension and robust wheels made it very resistant and comfortable in the face of numerous potholes.

The low-frame construction provided great stability and the tilting system performed well, offering flexible and pleasant steering.

During our delivery tour, each stop-and-go was managed smoothly with the unit always remaining upright and the sliding doors opening and closing without a hitch. With the larger volume capacity and weight, it’s important to plan your deliveries to ensure the cargo box is well organized in advance. This will minimize extra work looking for packages while you’re en route.

The benefits of such a wellequipped, high-capacity, delivery e-cargo bike were immediately apparent. The trade-off is the Fulpra’s limitations in more restricted, narrow, or uneven environments, yet it remains undoubtedly more agile than any delivery van in the city.

The front suspension fork provides additional comfort and stability on rougher roads, while the powerful hydraulic disc brakes deliver reliable stopping power. The unit is also equipped with a parking brake when needed.

The powerful front light includes low beam and high beam illumination, along with signal lights both front and rear. Double-side mirrors provide additional visibility.

Keep in mind that commercial e-cargo trikes like the Fulpra need some orientation before operating, as there are several important guidelines along with other recommended information to understand and adhere to before starting.
