2015 Melbourne Cup on Wheels

May 23, 2015 DISC Velodrome, Melbourne

WELCOME

President MESSAGE

I am delighted to extend a very warm welcome to the cyclists, their supporters and spectators to the 2015 Melbourne Cup on Wheels. We are pleased to see this event, with such a rich history, become a UCI Category 1 event this year attracting riders from Australia, Malaysia, Canada, USA, Hong Kong, China and Japan. It is also great to see our top sprinters in action tonight with UCI Category 1 points on offer. I’m confident that we will see some exciting racing from them which will be a great spectator event. I take this opportunity to recognise the support of Cycling Victoria’s partners; Sport and Recreation Victoria, Vichealth, Singapore Airlines, Physiohealth, Winning Edge, Seight, and Subaru along with our many other generous sponsors have all played a role in developing and promoting track cycling, To the officials and the many volunteers & staff, I pass on our gratitude for the many hours of hard work that contributes towards making this event the success I know it will be. Finally to the athletes, good luck and I wish you a safe and enjoyable competition as you strive to reach your personal goals.

Glen Pearsall President, Cycling Victoria II

Norm Stevens 1940 MELBOURNE CUP WIN

a family tradition

TT

he story of the Stevens cycling family starts with Clarence Leslie “Bowie” Stevens, an all-round champion of the 1920’s. “Bowie” famously won the Austral Wheelrace in 1927 starting from the handicap of 70 yards. A generation later, his two sons Ron and Norm became the cycling winners. Elder brother Ron joined the elite group of double winners of the Melbourne Cup on Wheels by winning in 1938 and again in 1944. But it was Norm who sky-rocketed to prominence in the space of just one track season. In the 1939-40 track season at the North Essendon Board Track, he was a front marker. The 1940-41 season opened with the Melbourne Cup on Wheels on the 2nd. of November 1940. There was a record entry of 156 riders including riders from every state and New Zealand. The distance at the board track was the traditional one mile (seven laps) plus 50 yards and there were 12 heats, so only heat winners progressed to the

final. Norm Stevens won the second heat from the 60 yard handicap. Two backmarkers had made the final, A. Priestley and strong favourite J. Bates, both starting together from 20 yards. They made contact with the main bunch with several laps to go, but it was Norm Stevens who was charging in front at the bell. He held his lead to the line notching his first major Wheelrace win at just 20 years of age. Second was L. Fitzgerald (110) and third M. Rowley (120). The story did not end there. Just four weeks later was the Austral Wheelrace over the same distance, the race his father "Bowie" had won 13 years before. Riding from 20 yards Norm won that too, only by inches, after the first rider was disqualified for riding under the pole line. The following Saturday night Norm Stevens was promoted to scratch and received rated billing with invitation rides. His Melbourne Cup on Wheels win was a rewarding introduction to his cycling future.
