EDITOR’S LETTER
Miracles and the Joy of Being Human The spiritual path never goes as expected. At one moment I think I am “there” and in the next I make myself promise never to say that I am “there” again. Something happens which I can’t explain and I punch the air and say “yes that’s proof ” and one day later I tread on the loose floorboard and hear it make that sound again – one which yesterday was unexplained and supernatural. You declare anything to be conclusive, and a week later you find yourself saying “Oh well, sorry, it looks like I was wrong again”. You don’t do it for the results. Both Buddhism and the Yogic tradition tell us not to be distracted by sudden siddhis or special powers. There’s a great anecdote in Rami Shapiro’s Holy Rascals. The author sits in Zen meditation and complains to his Buddhist teacher that enlightenment hasn’t come. The teacher however explains that there’s nothing you can do to achieve Nirvana, because it’s a matter of grace. “Sit because you like sitting. Or quit because you don’t like sitting. But don’t sit for any reason
2
other than to sit.” We practise because it seems right. In my case it always has felt right and I believe it always will. My life is better for it. I feel the grace in so many ways even though I never get the proof. Anyway, doubt is one of the great human qualities. Much of the time I wish I didn’t have doubt but actually – when I have my head screwed on properly – I know that it makes me a better human being. It’s part of the essence of being human. The novelist Ursula K. Le Guin passed away this week. She was an inspiring person and will be much missed. She was a Taoist and published a wonderful version of the Tao Te Ching. I think she would have also recognized the above sentiments. Among the obituaries, I read a great quotation from her: “We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings.” The quotation went on to make a political point, but I found it inspirational from a spiritual point of view. Change can happen that we find totally unexpected, and events can take place that change things utterly: no one expected them, yet they transform the landscape and a new landscape then takes shape around them. Some examples in the political world include the fall of the Berlin Wall or the election of Donald Trump, which virtually no expert predicted, even a week before it happened. We need to remind ourselves that the same can happen in spiritual terms. We know that everything is flux. As Mooji says, “All forms appear inside the formless. How paradoxical that our most firm ground is in formlessness”. Great saints can levitate, masters can still appear youthful fifty years after we last met with them and alchemists turn lead into gold. We can of course dismiss these things as legends or just fanciful thinking, but, on another level, we have already seen that reptiles can grow new tails and humans can have new working limbs attached. Science can work apparent wonders and, let’s face it, no one knows where it might take us. We have to stay aware that anything
is possible and that miracles can happen. What we thought was a given can overnight become history. We must never lose heart. Likewise we must remain comfortable with doubt and uncertainty. Proof or certainty would be a blessing but if we never get it we don’t have to become disillusioned or give up. We are unsophisticated creatures on the cosmic scale, who spend much of our time groping in the dark. On the other hand we are capable of living with our doubt; we manage our waywardness and uncertainty and meanwhile rise to ecstatic heights and create Chartres Cathedral, the Taj Mahal and the Golden Gate Bridge. And that is why – according to legend – the angels themselves are said to envy us. On a less exalted level, we are sorry that there were some supply issues before Christmas and that for a long time we were unable to supply two of our most popular titles. We did our best but the circumstances were beyond our control. We regret any inconvenience caused. It’s a new year and a fresh start. There are going to be miracles and I hope some of what we have to offer here will help them to happen.

GORDON SMITH ON THE FRIENDSHIP OF COMPANION ANIMALS
H
ow many people have said in this book, “This was no ordinary dog/cat/horse – I’ve never known an animal like that”? Magical things happen when you’re close to an animal like that, and it’s the strength of that bond that lets the extraordinary happen too – the telepathy, the messages from the other side. Is it so ridiculous to think that a person and animal can be so bonded that they respond to each other as human soulmates would? When you think of the number of people you’ll meet in the course of your life and how very few of them will stand out and become friends in the strongest sense, you can see how special such a bond is. The “owners” in this book all experienced it with those outstanding animals who were surely part of their soul group (…) There’s a story about a Brahmin called Kukku Ripa who lived in India, centuries ago. He was travelling alone, having renounced the world, and was living on the charity that people in the villages he passed through dropped into his begging bowl. One day he was trudging on to the next town when he heard a noise from the roadside, and when he went to look he found a starving young dog. He couldn’t leave her there, but carried her on with him, sharing his food with her until she recovered and could walk alongside him. After much journeying with the dog as his constant companion, he reached the caves of Lumbini in Nepal, where he intended to stay and meditate on his way to enlightenment. For 12 years he recited his mantra, leaving the cave only to fetch food for himself and the dog, who stood guard at the cave’s mouth while he was away. The gods of the 33 sensual heavens saw what he had achieved on Earth and how close he was to divine insight, and they invited him to come and celebrate with them in their paradise. Kukku Ripa ascended to join them and found a magical place where there was always feasting and luxury. The dog waited on Earth, and even when he was all but lost in his heavenly new existence, Kukku Ripa didn’t forget her. In fact, he missed her and he could
A Profound Love for All Life see that she was pining for him. He begged the gods to let him return to her. Baffled, they finally agreed. When Kukku Ripa arrived back at the cave mouth, the dog was ecstatic, and as he leaned down to tickle her under her ears, she suddenly disappeared and was replaced by a beautiful dakini – a goddess. She told Kukku Ripa that by overcoming the temptations of the 33 heavens and coming back for his friend, he had proved himself fit to achieve supreme realization. Ultimately, being good for the sake of being a good Brahmin wasn’t enough, and Kukku Ripa found that he truly received grace only when he reached out
to someone that needed his help – and that could have been a dog, a cow or another person. In feeling love for that animal, that man became enlightened – a compassionate, loving individual, not an ascetic saint. We can all see ourselves as individuals or we can realize we’re part of a bigger consciousness and try to reach out for an unconditional love of all beings. If you’ve felt moved reading about Carole and Sassy the Yorkie, or Philippa and Boyzie, or the way Zizikos turned to Eleni when he was in trouble, then you already know what I’m talking about and you’re already on the road to understanding that we can all find that bond in our lives. The essence of love, of those bonds, that runs through our lives, is what gives us meaning. No matter whom we feel love for in this life, human or animal, the very fact that we have loved another being will expand who we are and give us a higher perspective. All animals can touch our hearts if we let them. POETRY BY JONATHAN STEDALL
M
any books and articles about bereavement understandably tend to focus on the grief and suffering of those who are left behind. There is far less written about those who have seemingly “departed”, “passed on”, or in some people’s minds “passed away”; still less about the relationship that perhaps can still be fostered between “us and them”. Partly because my mother committed suicide when I was in my twenties – though my interest in what happens after death began much earlier – I have thought a great deal over the years about what is sometimes called “the spiritual world”. This inner journey of mine has been hugely deepened since the death of my wife three years ago. For me the night, and in particular sleep (traditionally called “the little death”), has been a great comfort. For it is here, I sense, that what is eternal in each one of us moves into that realm outside of time and space where death has no meaning; and it is then that this essence is reunited with the eternal essence of those we love. Even during the day there is, I believe, a communion constantly taking place – though for the most part unconsciously – whereby we can be helped, inspired, and comforted by those with whom we share a deep bond. In his book The Circling Year the poet Ronald Blythe writes: “Our mistake has always been to have believed that our immortal life begins when our mortal life ends, when in fact these dual states of our being, the temporal and the eternal, run side by side from our birth.” One way I have found helpful in bridging the temporal with the eternal, and thereby to deepen the connection with my wife, has been to start writing poetry. “Meditations on death, bereavement and hope” is how I have described my collection, entitled No Shore Too Far. One poem, which I’ve called Alive, expresses my strong conviction that what we call “life” does not cease
4
Behind the Scenes when our physical body dies; it begins with these words: ‘It’s strange’, you said, ‘how well I feel;’ and then you spoke another word that helped me cope, that helped me see a deeper truth at work. ‘Alive,’ you said, ‘so much alive.’ And as your body slowly died, that life in you it grew and grew and so outshone what met our eyes as words, too, fell away. Other themes that I explore
include memory and consciousness, the mysteries of time and space, and the human being as a microcosm of the macrocosm. But what underlies everything that I’ve written is my urge to listen more intently to what whispers to us from behind the scenes, as it were, as well as to share with those who have died what is unfolding in the here and now. What I often then experience is a silent dialogue in which my wife and other friends who are no longer physically alive, along with the angelic beings among whom they dwell, are gently reminding me of a bigger picture. And in return I try to bring to them experiences and insights from my daily life that perhaps can only occur while we live on Earth. In the last lines of a poem called A Helping Hand I acknowledge this interconnectedness, as well as my hope that the love and gratitude I feel towards my wife, together with my thoughts and prayers, are helpful: Perhaps we’re even holding hands, this hand with which I write; and what I try to share with you, it is perhaps your gift to me – the poems are by us. Some of the poems are also intimations that in our efforts to extend boundaries of every sort there is, in fact, no shore too far. NO SHORE TOO FAR by Jonathan Stedall
Written since the death of his wife in 2014, No Shore Too Far is a collection of poetry and meditations on the themes of death, bereavement and hope. Taking in a broad view of the interconnectedness of the whole of creation, this collection stems from personal experience and touches upon the entire spectrum of what it means to be human. It goes beyond mere poetry to become a meditation on life at every level and at energies that cross the narrow gap between life and death, if indeed there is any gap at all. It’s truly inspirational on a very deep level. 144pp, 206 x 136 mm, Hardback, 2017, RRP £12.00

THE ECONOMISTS’ DIET by Christopher Payne and Rob Barnett
This entertaining and conversational book is the perfect inspiration for getting a grip on our eating habits and losing weight. Its title? Both the authors are actually economists: this means their habits and the lifestyle pressures on them made their recovery from obesity particularly difficult and thus meaningful. On the other hand they have also been able to apply sound economic principles to dieting and healthy eating. They are not trying to sell us any weight loss “miracles”. Instead we need to eat less, and they supply evidence-based techniques for achieving that goal. Plus it’s fun to read! 320pp, 216 x 138 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £12.99

WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES by Clarissa Pinkola Estes
It’s a real pleasure to include this title amongst this season’s Classics because I feel it’s been a bit neglected in recent years. Paul Brunton was amongst the first westerners to follow the spiritual path to India, and his account of his journey in 1930-31 forms an invaluable portrait of some of the greats of Indian thought, including Meher Baba. His meeting with Ramana Maharshi at his ashram effectively introduced this great teacher to the west. While sitting with him, Brunton himself had a profound moment of non-dual consciousness, which he recounts movingly. ❖ Code: 280153 ❖ Cygnus Price: £9.99
This has been a consistent bestseller since 1994 and is celebrated for introducing the concept of life between lives, meaning what happens to souls in between one life on earth ending and another one starting. Newton, a trained hypnotherapist, was able to gather these accounts via regression, and they form a fascinating narrative. In reading them, we learn many lessons on how to live our lives on this plane, how not to create difficult karma and what sorts of lives we might end up experiencing next. He went on to write three more popular titles on this fascinating subject. 288pp, 228 x 154 mm, Paperback, 1994, RRP £14.99

This immensely popular book first came out in the 1990s, and since then it has gone on to generate many successful spin-offs and companion volumes. With more than 200,000 copies sold, this was the breakout book for the “western” take on the chakras, the book that popularized the chakras for a western audience. It’s an introduction to the body’s energy system, which will take you on a powerful journey up through the higher transcendent states of consciousness. Each chakra is thoroughly covered in its own chapter, with correspondences, meditations and illustrations, plus some simple Yoga movements. This book had a huge impact when it was first published in 1992. The author is a Jungian analyst, trauma specialist and poet, who realized that – through myths, folklore and case studies – she could bring to the foreground the archetype of the wild woman, the wise and ageless presence in the psyche that is at the heart of women’s creativity. She is an amazing and compelling storyteller and men as well as women can learn from this book. She helped to introduce a whole new current into the women’s movement, as well as becoming a teacher and therapist to the tens of thousands who have read the book. 560pp, 195 x 129 mm, Paperback, 2008, RRP £12.99

WRITING DOWN THE BONES by Natalie Goldberg
This wasn’t the first book on creative writing but it’s made an impact like no other. Rather than give rules for writing, instead it takes them away, and suggests an instinctive and “beginner’s” attitude. This is grounded in Natalie’s many years of Zen experience – it’s a Zen book as much as it’s a creativity book. Since its first publication in the 1980s it has influenced countless writers; each chapter is like a whole teaching on its own – you can dip in and out and if you don’t like one chapter you can jump to the next. TEACHER JAMES SWARTZ ON THE YOGA OF THE THREE ENERGIES
O
ur lives are controlled by three energies, called gunas in Sanskrit, which bind us tightly to our material nature. All are necessary and useful – they completely define us as living beings – but they also create problems. When we are ignorant of our spiritual nature – everfree consciousness – we are particularly susceptible to the downside of each energy. We cannot attain success in life without understanding these forces and mastering the techniques that transform them. Success in any field, worldly or spiritual, depends on the relative proportion of each with reference to the energy dominating an individual’s mind and their environment at any moment. These energies are the immediate experience of everyone and part and parcel of everything. This book shows you how to identify, monitor and transform them so that you can achieve your goals. The pursuit of material goals demands a different energy configuration from the pursuit of spiritual goals. Since it is written for people whose stated aim in life is freedom from dependence on objects— desires, fears, relationships, etc.—it touts the development of the qualities that make knowledge possible, since the only way to freedom in this daunting energy matrix is through Self-Knowledge. This knowledge is also very useful if you are pursing worldly goals: pleasure, fame, power, etc. In fact, wherever you find a successful worldly person, that success is due to the confluence of an individual’s subjective energy make-up and the energy configuration of their environment. The success is usually fortuitous, however, not the result of a conscious application of knowledge, because worldly people are not aware of their unconscious motivations. Enlightenment is not about getting a special experience that will solve all problems. It is shedding ignorance of our ever-free nature and its effects. And since ignorance and its effects – the belief that our beliefs, opinions, biases, etc. are actually knowledge – is hardwired, how likely is it that one fine day in the not too distant future you will wake up totally free and satisfied with who you are and the life dictated by your karma?
environment. So carrying the burdens of the world makes me a burden to myself and others. Guna knowledge, of the big picture, is the solution to existential guilt because it puts the responsibility for what happens to me – good and bad – where it belongs; moves me from the centre of my life to the periphery, where the view is much more realistic; and relieves performance anxiety, which allows me to relax in otherwise stressful situations. And it is equally good for the world because it improves my cranky, dissatisfied personality. Understanding these forces not only optimizes chances of success in the world, it optimizes chances of a successful relationship with yourself. Since you play an important role in your success, it behoves you to get along nicely with yourself. Self-obsessed individuals are not generally happy people. Of course you care about yourself, but if you are too self-centred you will give the world short shrift, and since the world is the other half of the life equation, it will Whether you like it or not, your selfundoubtedly return the favour. THE YOGA OF THE THREE ENERGIES by James Swartz
James Swartz is one of the leading contemporary interpreters of Yoga Philosophy in the west. It’s an incredibly practical approach to living, which is supported by a rich centuries-old body of writing. The “three energies” of the title refer to the gunas, the qualities that influence our behaviour and outlook, as dictated by our karma. We learn how to adjust or even work with these qualities to achieve our goals and live a more satisfying life. His advice is incredibly precise and full of anecdotes and real-life examples. BOOK REVIEWS — Religion & Spirituality ADVICE NOT GIVEN by Dr. Mark Epstein
Dr. Epstein is renowned as both a Buddhist and a psychotherapist and this title explores what the approaches of Buddha and Dr. Freud have in common. We are all afflicted by our egos: it claims to have our best interest at heart, but when it’s given free rein, the result is usually suffering. Here is much practical wisdom on how to encourage it to let go and to live a more fulfilled life. The text is easy to read and full of illuminating stories and anecdotes. The interchange between the two disciplines, both of which have been hugely influential in recent decades, can give fresh impetus in our quest to be happier. 204pp, 230 x 155 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £12.99

HOLY RASCALS by Rami Shapiro
Its subtitle is “Advice for Spiritual Revolutionaries”. This is an energetic and humorous manifesto for people who look at the world and wonder what is going on, who don’t want to be part of a religion but can see that a lot has been lost in the rejection of religion and who want to laugh a bit about it all. Thomas Moore says “I love this book. I feel at home in it.” And Cynthia Bourgeault calls it “At once side-splittingly hilarious and heartbreakingly on target”. It’s outrageous, humorous and utterly serious, all at the same time. 200pp, 229 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £15.99
This pocket selection is the perfect format for carrying around some of the wisest and most inspiring of Rumi’s teachings, most of them from his spiritual classic the Mathnawi. He is an almost unique combination of a mystic who founded one of the largest Sufi orders, and a poet who has recently topped the bestseller lists in the United States. He is renowned for his compassion and deep, and often humorous, insights into human nature, and his soaring accounts of ecstatic union with God. Most of the translations are by the book’s editor Kabir Helminski, who’s likewise an influential Sufi teacher. 210pp, 171 x107 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £8.99

THE RUMI ORACLE
THE RUMI ORACLE by Alana Fairchild
Many of you enjoyed the author’s Wild Kuan Yin Oracle Cards in the previous Review, and here is another stunning deck from Alana. It’s larger format so it’s a bit more expensive, but there’s more space to do justice to the 44 stunning transcendent images on the cards. They don’t carry images of Rumi and his life but rather concepts that he explored in his writings, like The Dissolving Light, The Lover and the Beloved, and Sacred Convergence. The 204 page book inside is like a learned volume in itself, encapsulating a rapturous approach to the great poet and including also new translations of his words. 204pp, 44 large colour cards, 173 x 127 mm, Boxed Set, 2016, RRP £16.99

O, you living in the world of six directions, accept the gloom and accept the bliss, for those seeds buried in the ground will one day grow into fruitful orchards.
An invitation into the Heart of the Divine
O my friend, If you are longing to be written on, become a blank page.
I died as mineral and became a plant. I died as a plant and rose to animal. I died as animal, and I became human. Why should I fear anything? When was I ever less by dying?
Love, like life, flows through the heart. Feel the thrill of the flow and say nothing.

BOOK REVIEWS — Crystals & Tarot
THE AKASHIC TAROT by Sharon Anne Klinger and Sandra Anne Taylor
THE DRAGON TAROT by Nigel Suckling
This is a wonderful-looking and very different tarot deck. It doesn’t stick to the Rider Waite formula and straight off the bat there are only 62, as opposed to 78, cards. The people in the cards are portrayed in that hyper-real, almost photographic way, but the images are full of visual prompts and send the imagination into interesting directions. The themes are based of course on the Akashic Records, on reading the signs and seeing the bigger picture in the flow of life. The cards include The Akashic Library, The Sands of Time and The Master Artisan.
The dragon is a deeply misunderstood creature. Far from being the treasure-hoarding beast, it is in fact highly intelligent and possesses the power of speech. These beautiful tarot cards, ripe with the dragon’s majestic power, speak directly to your soul. The cards elicit feelings of the time tarot was born. A time of wonder, of mysteries revealed and true connections with the world’s elements. The suits are represented through dragon types: fire breathing dragons, winged dragons, sea serpents and earth dwellers, and should connect perfectly with those interested in channelling the mythical power of these wise creatures.

THE PRACTICAL GUIDE TO CRYSTAL HEALING by Simon and Sue Lilly
This experiential book provides clear guidelines for those interested in exploring the interaction between different stones and the body’s natural subtle energies. Crystals are formed of very stable matter but because of the way they are formed are rarely perfect, the imperfections create amazing properties. How to get the best from these properties is laid out in step-by-step instructions with illustrated layouts and guided meditations. Situations for treatment vary widely from the practical such as headaches and insomnia, lifestyle situations like exams, to the more esoteric such as cosmic stress. A useful and comprehensive guide. 160pp, 228 x 191 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £12.99

A Guide to Starting a Cygnus Cafe
W
e know that we have many members who are interested in starting Cygnus Cafés in their community, and that they have questions, both about how to get started and also how they want their group to run. Below is a miniguide to running a Cygnus Café to give you a taste of what you can expect – if you would like to start your own Café please do get in touch. ❖ The starting point for setting up a group is the purpose of a Cygnus Cafe, and that is creating a space for you to meet people of like mind in your own locality. Nowadays it is often the case that you might find you can only get so far by yourself using a book. Sometimes it can be a great help on your spiritual journey to share issues that feel unresolved, with others of like heart.
❖ Many groups take a little while to gain momentum, and this is normal. I suggest you avoid the temptation of trying to find a perfect arrangement. ❖ Setting up for the meeting we suggest that the host prepares the room in the most appropriate way, arranging the seating so that everyone has eye-to-eye contact. Meetings generally begin with everyone taking turns to say their name and where they are from and, if they wish, a mention about something they may want to talk about later. ❖ Many groups have found it very helpful to keep the level of the meeting at a higher level by setting the intention of the group to the highest good at the beginning of the meeting. So that, whatever happens, the highest good may come out of it.
❖ Most of our groups run in what
we would call an unstructured way, they have no agenda and allow the magic of the moment to provide the topics spontaneously, depending on who wishes to share their recently experienced insights or share their current concerns of the heart.
❖ Gradually most groups begin to observe how Cygnus Cafes can grow in depth as participants feel more comfortable and they can share their vulnerabilities and “soft spots”. This gives others the confidence to share their concerns or doubts.
❖ When getting down to practicalities the first thing you need is a space, generally meetings are held in members’ homes or quiet rooms in cafés or community spaces. Any room hire costs etc. are shared by the participants on a donation basis. We advise avoiding noisy venues or spaces that have no door helps a great deal. You need a safe space where you know you will not be interrupted. ❖ When thinking about when and how often to hold your meetings, consider the needs of the group deciding when is best for (most of ) you. Some groups choose mornings, others evenings, some even choose a weekend. Larger groups sometimes choose to have two meetings in a month, once in the evening and once in the morning, to match the different lifestyles. Most meeting last for around 2 hours and our advice is to stick to the same day every month, week or fortnight to allow people to organise their diaries.
❖
We love hearing from our members and finding out what you are up to at your cafe meetings. Please send your comments, thoughts and updates to editor@cygnus-books.co.uk so that we can include them on this page.
❖ For support of meetings you can contact Vicky Hartley at Cygnus on

Personal Development — BOOK REVIEWS
38% OFF A MIND AT HOME WITH ITSELF by Byron Katie
This new book from a leading name in the field continues her philosophy on finding freedom in a world of suffering. As someone who reached the depths before turning it around and developing a new way of being, she now addresses the importance of generosity. It is structured around the Diamond Sutra, one of the world’s great spiritual texts. She says spiritual texts describe the ‘what’ but self-enquiry, which she calls the Work, is the ‘how’. This Work has four questions, which are tools for powerful selfrealization. For those familiar with Byron Katie this substantial book offers ample opportunity for further development. 336pp, 232 x 153 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £12.99

FATHER THERAPY by Doreen Virtue and Andrew Karpenko
Phillip Larkin’s famous poem about parents captures well the effect parents have on our lives. So many of us live with the emotional ghosts from the damage they caused, some unintentional, some very intentional. This compassionate and insightful book by former psychotherapist, Virtue, and clinical social worker, Karpenko, focuses on the father-child relationship. By examining the three types of paternal abuse it empowers you to counsel that wounded inner child. A healing journey that many are scared to embark upon, but one that aims to ultimately free you so you can move forward and finally enjoy your life. 208pp, 228 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £10.99

A COURSE IN MASTERING ALCHEMY
W
hat is the purpose of this course? The Archangels, Ascended Masters and other Teachers of Light have specifically orchestrated A Course in Mastering Alchemy to expand our understanding, consciousness and ability to use the new energy tools they offer. These new tools can assist us in stepping into the higher dimensions (…) The purpose of this interactive book is to provide you with as much information and as many practical experiences as possible to assist you on your journey. This book is not the full pathway laid out by the Teachers. It is an in-depth instructional experience drawn from most aspects of the journey. This book is not a quick read but instead an absorbed experience. A Course in Mastering Alchemy will help you to: • Become conscious of the rules, structures and limitations of the third and fourth dimensions. • Recognize that much of who you believe you are actually has very little to do with who you are. • Learn how to step out of the unnecessary concept of suffering and build a structure that allows you to experience wellbeing in your life. • Re-create yourself so your mental and emotional bodies begin to become one again. • Begin to experience yourself differently as a sovereign being who is no longer at the mercy of conditioned thoughts and emotionally charged reactions. • Discover new awarenesses and choices that were not available to you before. • Build and live within your Living Light Body. This work is different from any other work you’ve done. While it is simple, it is not necessarily easy. Some assembly is required. Success on this pathway requires you to create and hold a clear intention to become fully conscious and know yourself. It requires learning to hold your attention in present-time (the now moment) while being aware of your thoughts, words and actions.
14
Connect with the Teachers of Light The primary purpose of this work is for you to realign, rewire and remember who you have always been. You see, you already know everything that you will read here; you’ve just forgotten it. As you actively engage in this course, you will begin to remember what you already know. You will remember and experience the Living Light Body that is available to you – it’s simply covered and hidden by that bushel basket we call life in the third dimension. A Course in Mastering Alchemy culminates in the building and activating of your Living Light Body. This is far simpler than I thought it would be when I began this work. As you walk this path with me, and
the many who walked before you, you will discover personal abilities and possibilities you never imagined; from developing and honing your clairvoyance to having a personal relationship with Metatron, Yeshua, Anna and the many other Teachers of Light. You will discover how to enjoy your daily life while walking through the fearful chaos of the world. You will become able to change the outcome of any situation by quietly holding your attention on your intention and shifting the energy. This journey is not about mental information. It’s about participation, experiencing and making the decision to become bigger, stronger and more capable. It requires a new level of maturity, responsibility, focus and integrity. It’s about you stepping up, remembering who you are and stepping away from who you are not. You have played the thirddimensional game very well, and you have succeeded beyond your wildest imaginings, even though you may not be aware of it. Your task on this journey is simply to enjoy yourself and to remember who you are. As you engage in this work, everything else will fall into place. Much information will be provided along the way, much more than you expect to receive at this moment. Much energy will be felt, seen, experienced, released and moved. This is the journey you came here to experience. This is the journey to go Home. It’s time to meet the Teachers.

ONENESS BY JENNIFER KAVANAGH
W
e live in a divided world. Human beings struggle to live together. Whether at the level of family, community or nation, we row, we fight, we kill each other. Communities are riven by racial, political and religious divisions. Fear, greed, power-seeking and desperate need turn fellow human beings against each other and blind us to our common humanity. This is a reality of which we are fully aware. And yet. There also exists a parallel reality: of compassion, generosity and daily acts of kindness. It is natural to help others. The reason that the obverse is news is because it is shocking and unexpected. Kindness is not news. It may be a divided world, but it is also a small one. We are more informed than ever about the rest of the world; we are more and more connected. But our connections are both more ancient and more profound than those facilitated by electronic media. Our lives are peopled. However much an outsider we may feel, we are part of community. Even shut behind gates or fences, we cannot hide the fact that we are dependent on circles of humanity: the postman, the farmer, the manufacturers who made our furniture and clothes. Sometimes we acknowledge our connection. A meeting at a bus stop may result in eye contact, a smile, a comment about a common cause. In an ocean of separateness we experience a drop of connection. Many of us have occasional experiences of a connection of which the rest of the time we are barely conscious. It’s something that we might crudely call telepathy, but is at a level well beyond party tricks. Synchronicity is a seeming coincidence - a phone call, a piece on the radio - that confirms a course of action. For many, God is connection, relationship, the linking factor in all living beings. The natural world is an extraordinary model of oneness, not only in the relationship between individual beings but as a whole. That oneness is expressed in the overwhelming interrelatedness of all that exist

Community, Oneness and the Web of Connection within it. Examples of mutuality and interdependence are all around us. Insects, flowers, trees, fungi, protons and microbes, they’re all at it. There is so much that we don’t know about the universe that we live in, but what we can say with confidence is that built into its fabric is a web of connection. Shared characteristics do not stop at the behavioural level, but stem from our genetic similarities. DNA not only connects us to those we have considered “other” among the human population, but to nonhuman animals and non-
animals too. It is not them and us. We can’t separate ourselves from the rest of creation Most of us live an active life largely unconscious of the transcendental dimension. In periods of spiritual practice we may experience an enhanced perception of reality, when the boundaries between ourselves and the outside world are blurred, merged into one. We live in a paradoxical world. We are always alone and always in community. We are unique, but there’s only a hair’s breadth of DNA difference between us and, not only other humans, but other species. The planet is unimaginably diverse, and yet it is one. In the variety of religions, at the mystic level it is united. And it is in the Divine, at the heart of the multitudes of creation, that unity can be found. From religion, in science, and from our own experience, we can see that separation and division are human distortions. We know that the universe is one and that any disturbance of any part of it will upset that fragile balance. The more we can recognise the oneness of all, the closer we will draw to the One from whom all emerges and in whom all meets. Oneness, unity, brings together all human beings, all of the created world and, in those rare moments of revelation, they can be experienced in the oneness of the Divine. HEART OF ONENESS by Jennifer Kavanagh
Essential Spring reading
The great Christian spiritual writer Richard Rohr calls this “a wise and welcome reminder of the mutuality and interconnectedness at the heart of the universe”. The author is a former literary agent, who now sets up micro-credit programmes, mainly in Africa, and is a facilitator for the conflict resolution programme, Alternatives to Violence project. She is also a Quaker. Our screens and newsfeeds are full of violent images and, at the same time, we are surrounded by the beauty of nature, and daily life is full of acts of compassion, friendship and love. How do we reconcile these differences? This book explores the oneness at the heart of existence - and what this means for how we act in the world. 88pp, 215 x 141 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £6.99

As an artist she includes illustrations of moods and sensations, but there are also charts listing practical things to do and ways to think. She encourages patience, laughter and even singing to your cells, and there are guided meditations to support low times and prepare for occasions such as surgery. 208pp, 230 x 191 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £14.99

MAKING LIFE EASY by Christiane Northrup
Dr Northrup is best known for her classic Women’s Body Women’s Wisdom, in which she explained many of the crucial factors in women’s health. Since then, her work has become more overtly spiritual, and in this book she applies her skill and insight to illuminate the mind and spirit, as well as the body. And it’s not just relevant to women: in it she describes countless different ways available to all of us for bolstering our emotional and spiritual lives. Her writing as always is confident and authoritative and encourages us all to make that fresh start.

THE TELOMERE MIRACLE by Dr Ed Park
In this authoritative volume, Dr Park explores the revolutionary idea that disease and ageing in humans all arise from one single source: genetic errors caused by shortening of telomeres, or the sequences of DNA at the ends of our chromosomes. The cutting edge information here shows how we can intervene in the ageing process through various techniques and practices. The book is in depth but not hard to read, and uses all sorts of illustrations and metaphors to make its points. We might not want to live in these bodies forever, but almost all of us would like to live there for quite a bit longer, and in a more healthy condition. 344pp, 235 x 161 mm, Hardback, 2018, RRP £20.50

DARING TO REST by Karen Brody
The message of this book is aimed at modern women who feel they always need to be busy, and that taking a rest is mere indulgence. Yoga Nidra means yogic sleep and it is often included at the end of a yoga class to bring about deep relaxation. Having discovered Yoga Nidra for herself as a busy mum Karen soon realised how these times of brief relaxation affect every aspect of life. The 40 day course builds gradually beginning with gentle relaxation to establish an intention to let go and relax, then leading on to deeper states. 240pp, 250 x 160 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £15.99

MINDFUL PREGNANCY AND BIRTH by Riga Forbes
Enormous changes happen during pregnancy, not just physically. A woman is often extra busy and it is too easy to become tired and stressed, so a little book like this, another in the mindfulness series from Leaping Hare Press, is essential to ward off anxiety and stress. Ideas and exercises help smooth this important life transition by developing acceptance, connecting with the inner self and honouring the state of pregnancy. As the birth approaches, a mindful birth meditation practice is offered. The gift of mindfulness during labour is the ability to defuse negative reactions to what is happening physically. 144pp, 207 x 137 mm, Hardback, 2017, RRP £8.99

BOOK REVIEWS — Esoteric Teachings LEOPARD WARRIOR by John Lockley
This remarkable story began with a dream that called a young blond South African to spend years studying shamanism and he then describes the time he spent with a Korean Zen master. One day, when he was back in South Africe, he was asked if he wanted to be a sangoma; thus he became an apprentice to the secrets of medicine, dreams and dance. His final initiations with the Xhosa community involved animal sacrifice, and this confused his certainty about the Buddhist teaching not to kill, but once again powerful dreams led him on to enter initiation and the spiral of transformation to become a Leopard Warrior. An amazing story, modestly told.
THE POWER OF LOVE by James Van Praagh
As one of the world’s most renowned mediums, James Van Praagh is in a strong position to talk about love, when he has seen love strong enough to facilitate communication from beyond death. And these messages often reinforce the main theme of this book: that we must use the power of love to the utmost of our abilities while we are still in the physical body. This book is a tribute to love in all its forms and is full of vivid stories and amazing insights. He shows us that when we are aligned with love our fears diminish and that life with all its twists and turns becomes much easier. 164pp, 180 x 130 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £8.99

WINDS OF SPIRIT by Renee Baribeau
❖ Code: 280132 Cygnus price: £10.99
Dr Leo Galland, author of The Allergy Solution, is a world leader in integrative medicine. In Already Here he shares his experience of a profound loss - the death of his special needs son Christopher, aged 22. After his death, Dr Leo began to receive communications from Christopher’s spirit, which not only showed direct visual evidence that our souls do go on, but also revealed new perspectives on everything from the concept of timelessness, to the notion that the universe is, fundamentally, an act of love. The book takes its title from Christopher’s final message in which he describes Heaven as an ‘eternal present’ where everyone is together, even those of us still living earthly lives. “Lighten up”, Christopher says. “You’re already here”. 160pp, 216 x 135 mm, Hardback, 2018, £15.99

THE ANGELIC ORIGINS OF THE SOUL by Tricia McCannon
Dannion Brinkley calls this a “brilliant book”, and Colin Tipping says it’s a “must-read for everyone”. Tricia is a renowned clairvoyant and teacher, who has appeared frequently on TV. In this richly illustrated and highly readable account, she gathers together angelic lore and wisdom from many cultures to create a description of the heavenly realms and to give insights into life away from this plane. It’s a learned and well-researched book on angels, not a fluffy one. It’s a fascinating account of what the mystery traditions have to say about our human interaction with these astonishing beings.
This is such a wonderful concept for a book and I am so surprised I have not seen another one on the subject. The author is a wind whistler, inspirational speaker and shaman. The wind is air; breath is also air, and, as prana and ruach, air features prominently in spiritual belief and creation myth. You can, though, work with wind as you can work with breath; and likewise it’s both a literal and a metaphorical process. Finally there is also a rich lore and mythology around wind itself, especially in terms of travel and navigation: there is so much to be covered and this book does it all! 272pp, 229 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £13.99

Spirit — BOOK REVIEWS SACRED POWERS by davidji
MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN BEFORE by Steve Leder
From the author of Secrets of Meditation comes a brand new book, which explores a spiritual approach to transformation and awakening. The author left the corporate world to look for his guru, before he realized that “the guru rests inside”. His approach is wise and gentle and ideal for those who want more than just a functional personal development approach. However it’s also immensely practical: he distils the hidden wisdom into Five Divine Principles of the Universe. With the help of this book you can wake up right now and manifest the life of your dreams.
This is a wonderful book that’s so inspiring. It’s not long but it’s full of profound wisdom and plenty of comfort. At the same time the author, who is a rabbi in Los Angeles, doesn’t shy from looking head-on at suffering and loss, 35% and the effects they have on relatives OFF and other loved ones. Compassion shines out of every page and you put the book down full of admiration for the human race and people’s ability to survive and thrive in the face of terrible suffering. Sooner or later every one of us will have to walk through hell. It can’t be avoided but I hope this book makes the experience easier to handle.

THE SHADOW THAT SEEKS THE SUN by Ray Brooks
NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT by Jack Kornfield
❖ Code: 280110 Cygnus Price: £7.99
Among a forest of books offering to show us the path to peace and enlightenment, this one is different. Those who run after spiritual experiences are the shadow of the title, since all they need to do is stop and recognise their true nature. We join the author on the banks of the Ganges and listen in to his conversations with a man called Rudra. In flashbacks Ray describes his years of spiritual searching, including his meeting with Krishnamurti, who told him there was no path to freedom. The nine talks with Rudra intersperse stories from his Indian experiences.

Claire’s intimate journey with Anna continues in this sequel to Anna, Grandmother of Jesus. The story begins as the Magdalene family land in the Rhone delta where new friends make them welcome. Later many travel on to Britain and new voices join the narrative as they reach the peaceful retreat of Avalon. Alongside this story, the Magdalene voices offer wisdom teachings and reveal deep mysteries that have been kept secret for thousands of years. The depth of description included makes this a convincing account of how the bloodline of Jesus dispersed through Europe, and with it the Essene teachings. 400pp, 214 x 135 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £14.99

As an animal doctor Karlene not only travelled around Colorado treating sick animals, but she created a deep rapport with their souls. She learned how shamans communicate with animals and often involve them in their activities. Ancient pagans venerated animals but also sacrificed them. She found a great contrast between the hard living cattle men of America and the Hindus who believe cows are sacred. She ponders questions such as how a cat with Buddha nature can stalk a mouse, or whether a little finch sings so beautifully because it lacks consciousness. This is the story of her own spiritual searching, but the animals she works with are closely linked to her journey. 336pp, 227 x 153 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £15.99

The Gel An essential for everyone’s health and beauty By Jayne Beaumont
The Gel is one of those rare health and beauty secrets that have been passed by ‘word of mouth’ since its inception in the 1980’s. It is a product of Eastern wisdom and Western science with its magical mix of ingredients that work wonders on the skin whether repairing scar tissue, burns and bruising or simply improving the skin’s condition and tone. Developed by an American health practitioner, Beth Gagnon in her home in Los Angeles after becoming aware of the findings of research completed in 1975 by a Chinese doctor in a Beijing hospital who wanted to understand how acupuncture worked. He found that acupuncture triggered the activity of the enzyme, Acetyl cholinesterase, heightening ‘aliveness’ in the nervous system. He then looked for a natural substance to create the same effect and he found it in Caesium salts. Little did he know it would have such powerful implications for healing and rejuvenating skin tissue! Beth combined these findings with traditional homeopathy to make
his discovery even more powerful and The Gel was developed. In the mid 80’s Beth moved to London and soon after Leslie Kenton, the then Beauty Editor of Harpers Queen and latterly a health guru and writer, discovered The Gel and spread the word. Thirty years later, it has a long and devoted client list including many well-known personalities here and around the world. There are many extraordinary testimonials on the Gagnon Essentials’ website written by individual users as well as doctors and other health practitioners. I have been using this product for years as well as sharing it with my friends and family and can personally vouch for its healing properties. Along with many other users, I think The Gel should be in every household’s medical cabinet and amongst the daily creams of everyone who cares about their skin. The Gel comes in two sizes: a 60ml glass jar for £35 and a 125ml plastic bottle for £67 plus postage. www.gagnonessentials.com or 020 7224 2332 to place an order.
