RADICAL TRANSFORMATION

Tools for bringing Love into the World It’s a privilege to be editing this magazine. It gives me this little soapbox and I want to use it as to make a positive difference. The world has become a more demanding and anxiety-provoking place for most people over the past year or so. I believe, though, that all of us here in the Cygnus community can make a difference. It does seem that we can’t rely anymore on what is familiar. It feels as if the old structures are no longer able to support us. The comfort of progress, of relying on institutions and on various sections of society – this is just not the way it happens now. I want to say on behalf of all of us here, that everything we do at Cygnus aims to help you on the path. That’s all we are here for. There are some books between these covers that I am truly excited about. I may be a “dreamer” (to quote John Lennon, featured later in the Review) but I remain convinced, with the quality of these books, that if we read or observe closely what’s before us and truly take in what these teachers have to say, our lives can become miraculous.

2

Read these books one page at a time, or even one paragraph at a time: slowly enough that we can diligently follow their guidance. And not change the subject, nor decide that we can’t do it or don’t understand it. Of course, it is harder for some, of course, but for most of us we just do it. And if we don’t do it in that moment, we do it in the next. Or the next. That’s how transformation happens. If we want things to change, we need to fight for it. In the words of one of our guiding heroes William Blake: “I will not cease from mental fight, nor will my sword sleep in my hand, till we have built Jerusalem…” And of course this is the time of Christmas, of Yule and of the Solstice. There is an influx of bright energy this season. If we make the right effort, that energy will in turn support us. As I write this at my desk the long tail of Hurricane Celeste is dragging its way across the London skies, sending the light a strange orange, making the birds circle in a confused fashion and creating a weird atmosphere. Yet if I look to my left out another window I can see things are clearing, and everything there looks normal and grey(!). In a week we’ll be saying “Do you remember that day when all the sand from the Sahara came over?” Maybe we’ll even say it nostalgically. All things pass, at least on this plane of existence. Whatever it is, however challenging, one day it will pass, and you won’t feel that pain anymore. Love is something that does survive. People can be made to hate through oppression, torture, coercion, bribery – there are multiple ways – but no one can be made to love. Love, if it’s truly love, has to be freely given. Love often encourages love in return, but even if our love is not actually reciprocated, we are still enhanced by feeling it. It makes us all better people. And even though this plane seems to be riddled with venality, playground-style aggression and selfish short-termism, tradition says that there is a place where everything that is ever loved is held in timeless perfection, and every act of love is exalted. Love always will be the better

way. Only pay as much attention to the disrupters and aggressors as you absolutely have to in order to be informed. Otherwise ignore them. Don’t let their energy weaken you and their deeds get you down. It feels as if people like us are being called to be the leaders now. Not necessarily in an upfront way, not in a way that anyone would necessarily even know, but working behind the scenes, in the ways familiar to us and using the tools we have learned to deploy. I read an article by the mindfulness pioneer Jon Kabat-Zinn this weekend. Currently meditation is looked upon in the media as a therapeutic “lifestyle” choice, while he on the other hand describes it as a “Radical act of love and sanity”. We spiritual ones are not the deluded ones or the losers. It’s been astounding for me finding out about this community and your resolution, imagination and love. Certain models seem to be running out of steam. I hope this edition of Cygnus gives you comfort, support and inspiration to step up and make the world a better and more loving place for all life. DEDICATED WITH GRATITUDE TO LOUISE HAY.

BECOMING SUPERHUMAN BY JOE DISPENZA

W

hen we direct our energy as an observer, a consciousness, or a thought, we can begin to affect a downward causation of matter—in other words, we can literally make our minds matter. When we practice these concepts on a consistent basis—changing our levels of energy from survival states to greater levels of awareness, compassion, love, gratitude, and other elevated emotions—these coherent electromagnetic signatures entrain to one another. The effect should then be that we can unify communities that were once separated by the belief that we are just matter. Once we transition our state of being from survival into love, gratitude, and creation, then instead of reacting to violence, terrorism, fear, prejudice, competition, selfishness, and separation (which, by the way, the media, commercials, video games, and all types of stimulation are constantly reminding and programming us to live within), we can come together during crisis. We will have no further need for splintering, assigning blame, or seeking revenge. (...) If everybody (and I mean every body) chose peace, and if we came together at the exact same time, imagine the type of positive change we could create in our collective future. There would be no conflict. What’s equally powerful is that when we are the living embodiment of peace, we show up as unpredictable to others and then they pay attention. Thanks to mirror neurons (a special class of brain cells that fire when we see someone perform an action), we are biologically wired to mimic each other’s behavior. Modeling peace, justice, love, kindness, care, understanding, and compassion allows others to open their hearts and move from fearful, aggressive states of survival to feeling wholeness and connectedness. Think what would happen if we all understood how interconnected we were to one another and to the field, rather than feeling separated and isolated: We might

‘So why not ask yourself...what would love do?’ JOE DISPENZA

actually begin to take responsibility for our thoughts and emotions because we would finally understand how our state of being affects all of life. This is how we begin to change the world— by first changing ourselves. (...) While it appears old structures and paradigms are collapsing, we should not face this with fear, anger, or sadness, because this is the process by which evolution and new things occur. Instead we should face the future with a whole new light, energy, and consciousness. As I have mentioned, the old has to fall apart

and fall away before something new flourishes. Integral to this process is not squandering our energy by emotionally reacting to leaders or people in power. When they capture our emotions, they capture our attention, and thus they have captured our energy. This is how people gain power over us. Instead we must make a stand for principles, values, and moral imperatives like freedom, justice, truth, and equality. When we achieve this through the power of the collective, we will unite behind the energy of oneness rather than be controlled by the idea of separation. This is when standing up for truth is no longer personal, but through unifying and building community, becomes universal. I believe we are on the verge of a great evolutionary jump. Another way to say it is that we are going through an initiation. After all, isn’t an initiation a rite of passage from one level of consciousness to another, and isn’t it designed to challenge the fabric of who we are so we can grow to a greater potential? Maybe when we see, remember, and awaken to who we truly are, human beings can move as a collective consciousness from a state of surviving into a state of thriving. It’s then that we can emerge into our true nature and fully access our innate capacity as human beings—which is to give, to love, to serve, and to take care of one another and the Earth. Essential Winter reading

The author first came to prominence with his groundbreaking appearance in the film What the Bleep do we Know? Then his book Evolve Your Brain (sadly unavailable at the moment) went on to become one of Cygnus’s bestselling titles. I think that this can rightly be considered his magnum opus. Across more than 300 densely packed pages he offers an integrated course in helping ordinary people to reach extraordinary states of being. There are charts, full colour photos of brain scans and several pages of endnotes. This really is SAVE an epoch-defining new title. 348pp, 235 x 158 mm, Hardback, 2017, RRP £20.50

New Outlooks — BOOK REVIEWS THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE COSMOS by Ervin Laszlo

HUMAN BY DESIGN by Gregg Braden

When someone with the reputation of Ervin Laszlo writes about cosmic intelligence it is worth paying attention. A philosopher and systems analyst, twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, he is an expert on the emerging paradigm that our world is an interconnected coherent whole, informed by cosmic intelligence. He examines the nature of consciousness in the universe and how recent discoveries enable us to rediscover our identity and purpose in the world. Laszlo has also called on other forward thinkers to contribute and help him provide answers to the fundamental questions. His message is that by understanding the true nature of the cosmos we can overcome divisions and move into a new era of peace.

Maybe it’s coincidence although I suspect it’s more of a response to these times, but, like Joe Dispenza, Gregg Braden has written a new Big Picture book. It’s a book that needs to be read slowly and carefully, to be taken in deeply, because it helps us counter the ideology that the universe is just a cold machine. His voice is authoritative because he is a scientist and a New York Times bestselling author. His message? That we humans are not merely an evolutionary staging-post, but – as he puts it – we are “much more than we’ve ever imagined”. Read this for the complete picture of how. 320pp, 232 x 156 mm, Hardback, 2017, RRP £20.50

THE POWER OF EIGHT by Lynne McTaggart The author admits her idea of placing people in groups of eight started as a crazy whim, but she was amazed by the results, particularly regarding the effect of group intention on participants, and this encouraged her to continue. In describing what seem like miracles of healing, she delves deeply into the functional states of the human body to search for explanations that will withstand clinical analysis. The book chronicles her own journey but also includes stories of hundreds of people who have experienced life-altering transformation by harnessing collective energies. Her theories could alter individual lives and change the world for the better.

This is a clearly-written and level-headed book on the interface between synchronicity and business, and, on another level, between the apparently irrational and the apparently rational. Whatever we think about intuition and strange occurrences, if that is we are willing to consider them at all, there must then be lessons we can learn from them and advantages we can gain from them. On the other hand, there will be many pitfalls in applying them to business and careers, especially when people’s prosperity can depend on it. This then is the perfect guide, full of fascinating stories, to living creatively according to your inner compass. 352pp, 216 x 135 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £10.99

PLAYING THE MATRIX by Mike Dooley

TIME SURFING by Paul Loomans

Just as Joe Dispenza writes about living your best life from a scientist’s point of view, Mike Dooley covers the same subject using his experience as a business insider. Similarly again, this book has many charts and diagrams. But don’t be deceived – the material is also founded on deep spiritual insight. This is his master course, which has been perfected over a decade, while being shared live with students in 132 cities and 34 different countries. It’s challenging but written with warmth, and it lays out the genuine mechanics of manifestation.

Did you know your to-do list might be making you more stressed? That without it you might actually get more done in the day? In fact, don’t we all just wish we had more time in the day to do what we need to do? Zen monk, and founder of Unravelling Stress, Paul Loomans will change the way you think about time with his enlightening new book, Time Surfing. He’ll change the way you live. He’ll change the way you work. And he’ll bring peace to your everyday activities with his seven Zen SAVE steps to mastering time and trusting your intuition.

ON CULTIVATING THE FERTILE EDGES BY MADDY HARLAND

I

n permaculture design, the edge is where the ecotones meet: the sky with the land, the woodland with pasture, the river and its banks, and freshwater with saltwater in an estuary. These edges are where light intensifies allowing greater photosynthesis, nutrients are captured and biodiversity blooms. On the woodland edge, wild flowers attract butterflies, other insects and birds. On the riverbank, silt and mud are deposited, allowing verdant plants to grow, their roots stabilising the bank and enabling the water to flow crystal clear. Trees seed there and cast their shadow and fish spawn amongst their cool watery roots. Tidal estuarine waters are full of waders feeding whilst pelagic fish, dolphins, seals and otters hunt as the tide turns and saline meets fresh water, the rising tide releasing a host of creatures on which to feed. I love these wild places. They feed my soul. I am also interested in the ‘edges’ of human society, where people fall between the gaps whether through poverty, illness or other factors that make them vulnerable. I believe that more permanent cultures look after the vulnerable because they retain the threads that weave community. This web is well tuned and people are less likely to fall through the gaps. Permaculture design encourages us to mimic the creation of edges to boost biodiversity and yields in landbased projects, but it also helps us to understand social exclusion and design edges to minimise it. (...)

On ‘the Edges’ in Nature and in Human Society MADDY HARLAND

History, even science, is deeply subjective and being an outsider has its benefits. It is easier not to swallow our cultural narrative or gullibly believe the ‘double think’ of vested interest that dominates our political and economic life. Instead, there is more space to think and breathe, to identify the ways in which society manipulates, to observe the twists and turns of mechanistic thinking, and the inequitable and suppressive nature of the status quo. (...)

FERTILE EDGES by Maddy Harland Published in celebration of 25 years of Permaculture magazine, this collection of writings offers several snapshots from the frontline of the battle to maintain and beautify this planet, this home of ours. Maddy is a long-term friend of Cygnus and, like so many of the books listed here, hers offers encouragement and practical advice on how we truly can lead our lives in a way that’s better for ourselves and for all life. Her writing is outstanding and shows a profound connection to the land – as she herself says, to the “fertile edges” where things are wilder and a bit more interesting. 192pp, 210 x 150 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £9.95

As we grow older we learn how to recognise those on the edge and appreciate that we are not alone. I have gradually met with my tribe and they are from many races and countries. They do not accept the narratives we are all taught and instead question conventional values and opinion. We share a growing kinship at the edge as world events become more critical and the danger of keeping things the same escalates beyond the conditions of survival for humanity, other species and entire ecosystems. These are quite simply extraordinary times. Environmentalist and author, Paul Hawken, aptly called this place of extreme threat ‘blessed unrest’. This is not an existentially meaningless edge; it is alive with the potential for activism. It is the place where new ideas and understandings emerge and intuition gives birth to practices that are eventually ‘proven’ to work. These ideas and practices are eventually adopted by the status quo who so vocally rejected them a few decades earlier. The people of the edge are habitually ahead of the herd. Permaculture is an example of the fertility of ‘edge thinking’ becoming a global movement that brings together many different types of people. In my book. Fertile Edges, I explore the emergence of that movement from the time I became the editor of Permaculture magazine in the mid 1990s to today, the magazine’s 25th year, and the many issues of our time. I also explore many solutions, both ecological and beyond, that address the problems. I share elements of my personal journey too because by sharing them, my aim is not to take you to that grand edge, the top of the mountain, but to a place below the summit. Here we can both look out over a landscape, and also upwards to the summit, where we are still to climb. Adapted from Fertile Edges by Maddy Harland, editor and co-founder of Permaculture magazine and Visiting Knowledge Exchange Fellow at the University of Winchester.

Personal Development — BOOK REVIEWS THE UNIVERSE HAS YOUR BACK CARD DECK by Gabrielle Bernstein

BECOME THE FORCE by Daniel M Jones

These cards are not designed to predict the future or even explain the past, but each one holds a clear message for the here and now. Like a wise friend, this pack offers support in times of doubt as well as companionship in times of joy. It acts as a reminder that we are always connected to the universe and that answers are out there if we choose to ask the questions. The background designs by Australian illustrator Micaela Ezra are simple and contemporary, complimenting rather than distracting from the simple phrases. These cards remind us of the positive tools that support us in daily life, and reinforce the message that we are the dreamer of our dreams.

Many of us have heard about Jediism and how it is starting to become an accepted belief system, but there is little on how to apply it to everyday life. Now though the founder of the Church of Jediism tells how it has transformed his life, at the same time giving guidance on how we too can do the same. It’s also full of anecdotes from other Jediists – including popular author Theresa Cheung – and of particular poignancy is Daniel’s engaging account of how he uses the Force to help him with his Asperger’s Syndrome. It makes us better people and thus the Force makes the world a better place.

THE 7 QUESTIONS TO FIND YOUR PURPOSE by Richard Jacobs

LETTING GO OF GOOD by Andrea Mathews

Richard was an actor and is now CEO of an award-winning change consultancy. This is a real “in the world” book but it’s an extremely effective one – sometimes we need some guidance and direction to our outer lives, to make us effective agents of change. It’s of crucial importance for us all to find our purpose in life and this book shows us how to do so, by way of seven simple questions. From there he helps us formulate our Purpose Statement, and ultimately he gives us the resolve and energy to put it all into action.

Most of us see ‘being good’ as essential to our wellbeing and sense of self. But what if I told you that striving to be good isn’t really very good at all? In fact, striving too hard to be good is actually bad, leading to feelings of guilt and unworthiness and neglecting the needs of our genuine selves. Letting Go Of Good is a necessary read for people who recognise those symptoms of a guilt led life. Open your eyes. Find your peace. Awaken your authentic self. Live guilt free. And, say no to ‘being good’ all the time.

THE ABUNDANCE OF LESS BY ANDY COUTURIER

I

have to ask myself this: What were the things that really challenged me, made me wake up to my way of thinking that presupposed an industrialized system? In five words. Gentle. Small. Humble. Slow. Simple. “Sometimes just to touch the earth is enough for me,” said Wakako Oe. Time and again, I kept finding myself brought up short by how very gentle their approach was. In particular, her “no cultivation” method—simply giving the plants she wanted to grow a little boost by cutting the weeds down a bit—could be a metaphor for everything from how to teach a child, when to take your bike somewhere instead of your car, or what kind of policy a local political representative might propose. The second bell tone that repeatedly sounded for me was how very small-scale they were content to be. Ito wrote, illustrated, and bound a scroll—a book in the old style—and made only a single copy, for his father. Nakamura illustrated and bound me a handmade book, two copies—one for me, and one for himself, from a little poem I had scribbled for him. It touched me so much to receive this book in the mail. Murata plays only seven songs, all of them centuries old, again and again, not wanting to play anything else but to reach for “the true sound.” Seven songs. (...) Humility. Yamashita told me, “When you are a farmer, the other party is a living being. No matter how hard you struggle, in farming there’s a

part of it that’s uncontrollable.” When he says, “What I have to eat, that is what’s for dinner,” it’s a profound acceptance of limits. He was practicing a level of humility that I couldn’t have even imagined growing up, no matter how full of radical ideas I thought I was. And then, there’s slow. I remember sitting for hour after hour in Nakamura’s house simply talking with him, understanding that he has nothing to do, and perceiving that he’s set up his life so he doesn’t. Of course, Nakamura does do things, he makes

THE ABUNDANCE OF LESS by Andy Couturier This wonderful and inspiring book describes the encounters the author has had with ten ordinary Japanese men and women who have left behind mainstream life and are living radical and simple lives, surrounded by nature and an abundance of time. It’s not a practical book on self-sufficiency but personally I think it’s more powerful than that because it’s utterly from-the-ground-up inspirational, and in these tricky times it made me feel optimistic. It’s a great account of finding joy and self-fulfilment and all the time it’s informed by a tasteful and elegant Japanese aesthetic. his art, and lots of it, and practices his craft of hand bookbinding; he grows his food, and he gathers, cuts, and stacks firewood. He cooks and eats and reads and walks several miles to the local store for the things he doesn’t grow. But that he doesn’t have a crazy to-do list is for me an important fact to examine again and again. I still think that he might be showing us one of the ways out of the ecological crisis. When I’m rushing to finish the dishes as quickly as possible, or clear a whole bunch of emails before I get out the door, I can remember Nakamura saying, “If you have time, many things are enjoyable,” and see the true source of my misery. When I’m working on a poem very slowly, or even weeding the garden, if I’m not leaning precipitously into the next thing after that, I discover that I can actually be happy. And lastly, I had not understood how simple one could really be. I think often of a sentence written by Yamashita. “I’d like to get my life back to just the simple things: a picture, a plate and a pot, a flute, some vegetables, cooking a meal, reading a story.” Every time I unpack that, I think: art and music and narrative are essential to life—a picture and a flute and a story. Then there’s a pot and vegetables and cooking a meal. That could be it. Does making changes like these in our lives solve the world ecological crisis? Not alone. Nobody knows for certain all the changes we’ll need to make to turn our modern disaster around. But here’s my belief: it will require a much harder look at consumption. (...) And I do think humility is a big part of the answer. Humility is a training of the psyche that can help us achieve within our day-to-day lives the rich abundance of less. And what a victory to achieve this despite the distractions and attractions, a victory of your spirit against the setup of the world as it is. Eastern Spirituality — BOOK REVIEWS

THE OCEAN FELL INTO THE DROP by Terence Stamp

ENLIGHTENMENT IS YOUR NATURE by Osho

Terence Stamp is well-known as one of Britain’s most charismatic and memorable actors, and he has made no secret of his spiritual inclinations. In this compelling memoir he offers fascinating vignettes of the showbiz life he has led, but more interesting than that are his encounters with some of the great spiritual teachers of the 20th century. He describes tracking down Sri Nisargadatta, author of I Am That, in the backstreets of Mumbai; plus what he writes about Krishnamurti is moving and inspiring. It’s a wonderful account of a life richly lived.

Osho, formerly known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, passed away in 1990 but he left a rich legacy of talks and teachings, which still resonate today with spiritual seekers everywhere. His works are always based on vast knowledge of the world’s great teachings, combined with a radical irreverence and a refusal to bend the knee to spiritual norms. Here he outlines “the psychology of the Buddhas”, which uses meditation and awareness to help us relax back into our own true nature, which is enlightenment. It’s a bracing and challenging read.

WARRIORS OF LOVE by James Cowan This charming pocket hardback comes in two parts. In the first, James Cowan describes the original meeting between the Sufi mystic Rumi and his great friend and teacher Shams of Tabriz, which led to a fresh outpouring of teachings and stunning poetry from Rumi. It becomes a well-observed and inspiring essay on spiritual friendship in other ages and societies. Then the second part includes Cowan’s versions of 50 Odes, which are exemplars of intoxicating poetry and profound spiritual insight. TEN TALES FROM TIBET by Lama Lhakpa Yeshe This special little book is one to own and keep, to treasure and to share. Quickly read it through then return again and again to slowly absorb the simple wisdom of the tales and be inspired by the stark soaring photographs of Tibet’s landscape. Those who are familiar with Buddhism may already know some of the stories, as they come from traditional roots. Each one in its individual way addresses the theme of cultivating compassion, which is the essence of Buddhism. In each tale we meet a wise lama who demonstrates to the seeker how meditation and searching within self will bring answers to their questions, whether that question is about a way to prevent sore feet or how to attain enlightenment. 76pp, 199 x 134 mm, Hardback, 2017, RRP £8.99

Author in the spotlight THE MALA OF GOD by Mooji

WHITE FIRE by Mooji

Out of the two reissued titles by spiritual master Mooji, this is more of a gift book. It contains 108 pithy and beautiful prayers and 12 blessings, plus a whole host of drawings and calligraphies: the drawings in this book are more complex and specific than in White Fire. This would make an amazing present to any spiritual seeker; Mooji’s popularity is growing day by day and much of this is down to his deep immersion in the crystal-clear tradition of HWL Poonja and Ramana Maharshi, plus his natural ease with ordinary people. Born in Jamaica, he lived for a long time in Brixton before moving to Portugal. 184pp, 178 x 129 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £12.99

❖ Code: 270403 ❖ Cygnus Price: £9.99

Following the success of his book Vaster Than Sky Greater Than Space at the start of the year, two of Mooji’s earlier titles have been reissued in elegant new editions. This collection of short teachings includes much of Mooji’s own calligraphy and brushstroke drawings, plus many colour photographs which convey his calm and loving presence. Just gazing at them can be a transformative experience! The teachings themselves come from the Advaita tradition and each one, as the jacket says, can like White Fire “ignite a burning flame within your heart”. Reading this closely could be the first step on the path of self-realization. 368pp, 229 x 155 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £17.99

THE MOON GARDENER’S ALMANAC 2018 by Therese Tredoulat So many of us live in cities we have lost most of our ability to tune into nature and live according to the rhythms of the Earth. Gardeners are more likely to understand certain aspects, such as when to plant and harvest, but there is much more to know. Every type of plant is affected differently by the moon’s position, particularly the four vegetable groups of root, leaf, flower and seed/fruit. After an introduction to planting, green manure and garden design, this book becomes a diary offering suggestions for every day of the year. Tables to calculate weather influences and individual crop patterns make this a useful almanac for any serious gardener. Published by Floris. 120pp, 216 x 162 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £8.99

LOUISE HAY (1926-2017) BY ADAM GORDON

I

think I only met Louise Hay a couple of times, but she has figured large in my life. On one level I never expected her to leave this plane, even though I knew she was getting old in body and had recently celebrated her ninetieth birthday. I am sure others feel the same. Having marked that event in the Cygnus Review, it’s poignant now to mark her passing from this world, although I remain deeply inspired by all her lasting achievements. Her main quality, which I remember from both meetings, was a complete lack of interest in the trivial, in what wasted everyone’s precious time. It felt like she didn’t need to do small talk and that – because there were so many important things out there – she refused to get bogged down in what wasn’t important. Deep down I am convinced that this is because she had put up with so much draining unpleasantness herself in her own life. She had seen so much abuse, suffered so much abuse, and she just wasn’t going to indulge the hollow and false aspects of life any more. There were and are far more vital things to put your energy into. She saw that, and she had the wisdom and will to put that realization into action. She simply got straight to the point. For almost everyone on this planet the most important task is healing. Healing ourselves so that we can become positively functioning human beings, and then beyond that so that we can go on to become healers to the rest of humanity and indeed to all life around us. To me, true bravery is to do what Louise did: heal herself (in her case from cervical cancer) and then use every ounce of energy and material resources at her disposal to heal others in the most efficient way possible, by building a huge and wellrun community that would facilitate other healers and teachers of every shade and finally distribute that energy around the world. It didn’t matter to her who you were or what you looked like, as long as you did good. That shows wisdom, intelligence and a deep compassion, as well as guts.

A tribute to a life of bravery and service. This is genuinely inspirational. We might at times feel self-conscious or embarrassed by our own concerns, our hang-ups and issues…feel perhaps that we are wimps – there’s that useful but ugly phrase “first world problems”. Well, just look at Louise’s life: she finished up rich and comfortable but she never took the easy path. We don’t have to reject or turn our backs on all the blessings we have, but we can still apply all our resources to love and to healing. Remember the legendary vow

of the initiate: “I desire to know in order to serve”. In every single moment we can make the vow to change. The darkest days of the AIDS epidemic are getting more remote, although it is still a huge issue for many of our brothers and sisters. Amid all the hysteria and genuine discomfort at the time we cannot underestimate the value of the radical and public steps Louise took to spend time with those who were HIV positive or had AIDS. These support groups she set up made a vast difference to society’s standpoint regarding the illness. She started to appear in the media and, ever practical, she was able to use her high profile to make even more of a difference. She wrote more books, started her own publishing company and things went on from there. And by then she was already more than fifty years old…. I feel sorry for her family, friends, co-workers and employees who must be missing her terribly. On the other hand I know that a love and energy that strong doesn’t disappear overnight. If we believe in certain truths and have a certain way of looking at the whole of existence, we have to hold it firmly in our hearts that a strong custodian like Louise has now taken things to the next level and that the healing energy that she has facilitated will henceforth be even more powerful. That is an immense gift for all of us.

LIFE LOVES YOU by Louise Hay and Robert Holden

Essential Winter reading

Life Loves You is one of Louise Hay’s best-loved affirmations. It is the heart thought that represents her life and her work. Together, Louise and Robert look at what it really means - that life doesn’t just happen to you; it happens for you. In a series of intimate conversations, they dig deep into the power of love, the benevolent nature of reality, the friendly universe and the heart of who we really are. Life Loves You is filled with inspiring stories and helpful meditations, prayers and exercises. Cygnus is honoured to present this title as a tribute to all the amazing work Louise Hay did for our communities. 264pp, 178 x 127 mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £8.99

A Guide to Starting a Cygnus Cafe

W

e know that we have many members who are interested in starting Cygnus Cafés in their community, and that they have questions, both about how to get started and also how they want their group to run. Below is a miniguide to running a Cygnus Café to give you a taste of what you can expect – if you would like to start your own Café please do get in touch. ❖ The starting point for setting up a group is the

purpose of a Cygnus Cafe, and that is creating a space for you to meet people of like mind in your own locality. Nowadays it is often the case that you might find you can only get so far by yourself using a book. Sometimes it can be a great help on your spiritual journey to share issues that feel unresolved, with others of like heart.

❖ Many groups take a little

while to gain momentum, and this is normal. I suggest you avoid the temptation of trying to find a perfect arrangement. ❖ Setting up for the

meeting we suggest that the host prepares the room in the most appropriate way, arranging the seating so that everyone has eye-to-eye contact. Meetings generally begin with everyone taking turns to say their name and where they are from and, if they wish, a mention about something they may want to talk about later. ❖ Many groups have found it very

❖ Most of our groups run in what

helpful to keep the level of the meeting at a higher level by setting the intention of the group to the highest good at the beginning of the meeting. So that, whatever happens, the highest good may come out of it.

we would call an unstructured way, they have no agenda and allow the magic of the moment to provide the topics spontaneously, depending on who wishes to share their recently experienced insights or share their current concerns of the heart.

❖ Gradually most groups begin

to observe how Cygnus Cafes can grow in depth as participants feel more comfortable and they can share their vulnerabilities and “soft spots”. This gives others the confidence to share their concerns or doubts.

❖ When getting down to

practicalities the first thing you need is a space, generally meetings are held in members’ homes or quiet rooms in cafés or community spaces. Any room hire costs etc. are shared by the participants on a donation basis. We advise avoiding noisy venues or spaces that have no door helps a great deal. You need a safe space where you know you will not be interrupted. ❖ When thinking about when and how often to hold

your meetings, consider the needs of the group deciding when is best for (most of ) you. Some groups choose mornings, others evenings, some even choose a weekend. Larger groups sometimes choose to have two meetings in a month, once in the evening and once in the morning, to match the different lifestyles. Most meeting last for around 2 hours and our advice is to stick to the same day every month, week or fortnight to allow people to organise their diaries.

We love hearing from our members and finding out what you are up to at your cafe meetings. Please send your comments, thoughts and updates to editor@cygnus-books.co.uk so that we can include them on this page.

SUMMER WITH THE LEPRECHAUNS by Tanis Helliwell

This readable little book was very popular in Germany in the 1980s and is now out in English for a new generation. Ursula Burkhard was born in Basel in 1930. Blind from birth she was distanced from ‘real’ things she could not see and instead she experienced gnomes and other elementals. As a child she experienced them easily, but the adult world was critical of what didn’t fit with Christianity. The teachings of Rudolf Steiner helped her to reconnect with those companions in the invisible world. Ultimately one gnome called Karlik arrived saying she could not live alone, and he guided and advised her all the way through her adult career.

Author in the spotlight

It’s a return to Cygnus of this much-loved classic where popular Canadian teacher Tanis Helliwell tells of the time in 1985 that she spent sharing her home with a family of leprechauns. The stories and anecdotes she relates are fun and recreate the magical atmosphere of rural Ireland. Through them we learn a great deal about all elemental life, not just leprechauns, but also the more familiar fairies and elves – what we can do for them and they for us. You may be sceptical about their existence but life is undoubtedly enhanced when we allow these amazing presences into our lives! 192pp, 216 x 142 mm, Paperback, 1997, RRP £9.95

PILGRIMAGE WITH THE LEPRECHAUNS by Tanis Helliwell

Having met the leprechauns in a cottage on the west coast of Ireland, in this sequel Tanis leads a tour of the country’s sacred sites, which unsurprisingly (with leprechauns present!) subsides into chaos. At least, that is, according to outward appearances: on another level the students on the pilgrimage actually learn valuable lessons about life, because of the spirit of the “Craic” which prevails in Ireland. The “Craic” is known to most of us as the impulse and energy of having a good time, but the leprechauns teach us about it as a spiritual principle also. These elementals, who are all around us, just have a different way of doing things! 192pp, 218 x 142 mm, Paperback, 2010, RRP £9.95

Spiritual Perspectives — BOOK REVIEWS

SEKHMET by Nicki Scully

THE JOY OF MINDFUL WRITING by Joy Kenward

Starting with the cover, which is a wonderful colourful mandala of the great Egyptian goddess standing at the heart of blooming orange flowers, you know that you are in for an exhilarating ride with this new book from the acknowledged master of the sacred mysteries of Egypt. Sekhmet is fierce yet compassionate and the book contains meditations and stories that will guide your own unique healing process. To some it might sound fantastical, but anyone who has seen statues of Sekhmet in our European museums have a sense of her power. This is an amazing opportunity to do some deep and challenging work, in what are of course challenging times.

This book inspires creative awareness, bringing back the joy of writing for stuck and weary veterans and easing open the door for those who have always wished to write. As a writer myself in a currently not-too-good place, I can verify that Joy’s methods really do work! Whether we’re experienced writers or just need the confidence to begin, Joy provides a potent balm composed of wisdom from Buddhism and the unfolding of her own discoveries as a writer to help and heal our progress. Whether you’re in full flow or not, Joy’s ideas, beautifully and simply expressed, provide a fascinating magic designed to energise, uplift and enhance creative writing skills.

Her Battersea Park Road to Enlightenment has sold more than 100,000 copies in the UK and now she turns her gaze to a more taboo subject – sex. This is not a sex book but a book about sex. Despite her fears and reservations, she embarks on a programme of workshops, conferences and encounters with tantric masters. The results are entertaining and enlightening. She has done the hard work so that we can learn more about this rich SAVE vein of human experience.

MY NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE BY KELLY WALSH

I

n this extract, co-author Kelly Walsh describes her Near Death Experience while in hospital after an overdose The following evening, I had what I can only describe as a near death experience. I was lying in my bed, holding onto my wooden cross while my body was pumping with sweat. It was dark, my eyes were closed and I was feeling extremely anxious. I had an awareness that there were spiritual beings around me trying to keep me calm. I couldn’t physically see them, but I could feel their presence in such a powerful and loving way. They had a soothing, peaceful effect, and I believe they were there to help support me with what I was about to experience. Suddenly, I was transported on a journey and could feel myself going through what felt like bumps in the universe, commonly referred to as dimensions. While this was taking place, my whole life flashed before me and I could see and feel the emotions – good, bad and ugly – associated with my life experience up until then. This was not a particularly pleasant experience; it felt like a test or battle to survive. I was travelling at what seemed like supersonic speed, having to hold on tight while I faced jolts going through various dimensions in the universe. After passing through the seventh dimension, I felt as though the battle was over and a wave of relief surged over me. I was finally at peace and enveloped by unconditional love. It was the most incredible, joyful, loving feeling, and I wanted to stay

‘A Love so beyond any I had experienced before’ KELLY WALSH

lost in that moment forever. A love so beyond any I had experienced before, that it is impossible fully to express it in words. Suddenly, someone or something spoke to me: “You are strong and powerful. It isn’t your time.” I cannot tell you who or what it was, as I have no recollection. This seemed ironic considering that I’d just tried to kill myself. The voice then said: “You still have a mission to carry out on Earth. Humans have the capacity to heal physically, mentally, emotionally

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES by Dr Penny Sartori and Kelly Walsh Whatever you think about Near-Death Experiences, there can be little doubt about their potential to transform lives utterly. This new book from worldrenowned expert Dr Penny Sartori and spiritual teacher Kelly Walsh however goes beyond this and recounts their stories and research on how these NDEs have changed the lives of people who have had these extraordinary experiences and the communities associated with them. It’s mysterious and fascinating to read but above all it delivers an encouraging message and might diminish our fear of death. Features exclusive contributions by Neale Donald Walsch and Bernie Siegel. 264pp, 212 x 136 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £10.99

and spiritually … through love. Selflove is the most important of all.” In that instant, I realized that we are all one, all connected and, contrary to common belief, there is no higher Source passing judgement on us. When our souls leave our bodies, the only judgement we endure is that which we pass on ourselves. We evaluate all we’ve said and done from a place of fear, rather than from a place of love. In a religious context, this would be thought of as our period in Hell; I prefer to call it a period of reflection. The length and pain associated with our period of reflection depends on how we lived our lives. We are simply here to love and learn, and each of us is at a different level in terms of spiritual growth and development. It is worth remembering that not a single person is lost to God’s perfect Divine Love. It’s only when we go home that we fully realize this. We are all perfect imperfection in God’s eyes; trying our best to live in alignment with our soul’s real essence, which is love. The following morning, after what seemed like an eternity as I had no comprehension of time, I came around from this experience. My arms were crossed over my chest and, as I opened them in slow motion, like a rebirth, I remember thinking, “Why am I in a hospital bed after where I have just been?” I felt powerful – like I could do anything, so I tried to escape from the ward … naked. My exmother-in-law, who was there at the time, said I was proclaiming that I had met God and angels. That evening I had a vision of the world changing, and that like-minded souls would collaborate to make this happen. I was so euphoric that I shared my experience with anyone who would listen. I don’t think I was taken too seriously, as I was on a psychiatric ward. Miraculously, I left the hospital a week later with a clean bill of health. Extracted from The Transformative Power of Near-Death Experiences, by Dr. Penny Sartori and Kelly Walsh. Watkins, 2017.

Angelic & Other Realms — BOOK REVIEWS SEVEN STEPS INTO ANGEL LIGHT by Chrissie Astell

THERE ARE NO GOODBYES by Elizabeth Robinson

Chrissie Astell is an indefatigable and radiant teacher who has been passing on her knowledge and wisdom for many years through her books and workshops. There are stories and anecdotes scattered throughout, but ultimately it’s not a “here are my encounters with angels in my everyday life” title. Rather it’s a course that enables us to use the angel energies to become more integrated and thus beacons of light to the wider world. It’s full of meditations and exercises grounded in Chrissie’s profound spiritual practice. Just opening the book you feel you are at the start of an amazing journey.

Following the suicide of a client, Elizabeth Robinson became aware that a gold cord still connected her energy field to the dead girl. Since then she has continued to be able to contact those in spirit and has worked to make sense of her experiences. In this book she shares stories of the clients and colleagues who have passed, but who continued to contact her from ‘beyond the veil’. The messages she has received validate her belief in the continuation of life after death and the power of human potential. The book is packed with accounts that will seriously challenge the sceptical and offer comfort and guidance for those who have known the grief of separation.

THE BIG BOOK OF ANGEL STORIES by Jenny Smedley

THE GIFT OF AN ANGEL by Wendy Jane Erlick

There are some truly astonishing stories in this generous collection, which illuminate many eye-opening aspects of the spiritual spectrum of life. From a dog reincarnating as a cat to help his human companion surmount his terrible fear of them, to angels disguised as rescuing cab drivers, babies and rabbits, this book never fails to surprise and delight! Told with sincerity, humour and moving authenticity, the recounted experiences offer enlarged perspective, reassurance and wonder. Rescued by an angel as she fell from a moving train at three years old, Jenny Smedley has devoted her life to working with angels to help others, and this book is a collection of her best stories.

Wendy wrote an article in the last Review, which was extremely popular and this book is one of Cygnus’s bestsellers. However we also forgot to mention her contact details with the article! So to make up to her we have included the book again, with her details attached. Wendy practises from Watkins Books, Cecil Court, London and privately. She lives in Devon. Her email: Wendyjaneerlick@gmail.com. Mobile: 07922 038059. And website: https:// celestialhealing.wordpress.com. We look forward to the next book!!

ANIMAL TAROT CARDS by Doreen Virtue and Radleigh Valentine

CELTIC TAROT by Kristoffer Hughes

Purists might have words to say about a tarot deck featuring a different animal on each card, but it’s impossible to deny that this is a beautiful and charming deck. The cards are well produced, a 190-page book is included and the artwork is skillfully executed. The four suits are the four seasons and the images do carry many echoes of the classic Rider Smith Waite cards. Not only are these “God’s creatures great and small” but they are also unconditionally loving angels in disguise. An ideal gift for the animal lover who reads or wants to read the tarot.

Kristoffer is Chief of the Anglesey Druid Order, author of several books including From the Cauldron Born and a busy and popular speaker at pagan conferences around the world. The wonderful tarot cards are based on Rider Waite and deeply immersed in the Celtic tradition of these islands. Dragons, crows and other recognisable symbols are everywhere and the tone ranges from fertile and sexual to bleak and weather-beaten. The book inside is comprehensive, weighty and full-colour. It’s a radical, sensual and inspiring deck, with a real depth.

THE ANGEL TAROT by Jayne Wallace

WILD KUAN YIN ORACLE by Alana Fairchild

Jayne is the founder of Psychic Sisters and runs a popular concession inside Selfridges in Oxford Street. Previously she created the Oceanic Tarot. All the figures depicted in this deck are angels, and the Minor Arcana all have a one-word quality written on them. It carries with it an ethereal angelic energy – it’s definitely a light-filled and positive deck. It would make an ideal gift for anyone starting on tarot and who has a special sympathy with the angelic realms. It also includes a small 64-page colour guidebook.

44 amazing cards plus a 140-page book – beautiful images of the Buddhist deity Kuan Yin, the divine mother, set in wide-open landscapes and magical places. I don’t want to include too much so that there’s space for a couple more images! Totally inspiring – the colours just transport you to another place! 44 cards, 140pp, Boxed Set, 2017, RRP £16.99

Health & Crystals — BOOK REVIEWS CRYSTAL BLISS by Devi Brown

MEDICAL MEDIUM THYROID HEALING by Anthony William

Never explored crystals? Not sure where to start? This is a clear and useful introduction to the innate energy of these powerful stones. Whatever your goals in life, there are crystals that can help and support you to manifest them. Choose the colour appropriate to your aims and use the stones as décor or jewellery to attract the positive and protect from negative influences. Once you have chosen your crystals, cleanse and programme them through concentration and keep them recharged by exposure to both sun and moon. This is a comprehensive guide to unlocking the power of stones and gems.

Anthony has already written the New York Times bestsellers Medical Medium and Life-Changing Foods and now he turns his attention to all the illnesses, conditions and other phenomena associated with the activity of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is the new hot topic in health but it is not actually the original reason behind symptoms like fatigue, fibromyalgia and depression. Since he was four, Anthony has been aware of his gift to read people’s conditions and more importantly advise them how to heal. The experts don’t know what’s actually happening – find out the truth here.

ORTHOREXIA by Renee McGregor

THE BOOK OF CRYSTAL GRIDS by Philip Permutt This book uses sacred geometry to access the energy patterns of the many colours, shapes and sizes of different crystals. By creating specific grids that channel the energies in the optimum way crystals are able to ‘talk’ to each other. There are 50 different patterns for different needs, such as dispelling negativity or communication, each based on a specific geometric shape on which crystals of a chosen colour are laid out. The book includes a crystal index and an introduction to sacred geometry with advice on which crystals to acquire, or how to make the most of a current crystal collection to enhance well-being and manifest desires. 160pp, 235 x 190 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £12.99

The strap line of this book is When Healthy Eating Goes Bad. The term orthorexia nervosa was coined to describe those obsessed with healthy eating, sometimes called a ‘clean’ diet, which can rigidly exclude certain food groups. Society is obsessed with food, too much, too little, diets that are fashionable one day and condemned the next. Anorexia and obesity are conditions very much in the public eye, but there is another hidden layer of eating disorder, which is largely ignored, when a focus on ‘healthy’ eating becomes a dangerous obsession. This book exposes myths around healthy eating and offers ways of escape from obsession back to a balanced future that is truly healthy. 212pp, 200 x 130 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £8.99

JOHN THE BAPTIST AND THE LAST GNOSTICS by Andrew Phillip Smith

THE MAGICAL YEAR By Danu Forest

This is a stunning book about the present-day followers of John the Baptist. Not only is this book a great introduction and overview of a fascinating group of people, but it serves to clarify/illuminate several Mandaean concepts that are often shrouded in mystery and, at times, contradiction.

An invaluable resource for anyone new to the festivals of the Wheel of the Year, but also an incredibly enjoyable read for those who have long celebrated these magical shifts in nature. Danu Forest’s understanding of the ancient ways and traditions are rich and insightful for the modern-day reader.

The Gel An essential for everyone’s health and beauty By Jayne Beaumont

The Gel is one of those rare health and beauty secrets that have been passed by ‘word of mouth’ since its inception in the 1980’s. It is a product of Eastern wisdom and Western science with its magical mix of ingredients that work wonders on the skin whether repairing scar tissue, burns and bruising or simply improving the skin’s condition and tone. Developed by an American health practitioner, Beth Gagnon in her home in Los Angeles after becoming aware of the findings of research completed in 1975 by a Chinese doctor in a Beijing hospital who wanted to understand how acupuncture worked. He found that acupuncture triggered the activity of the enzyme, Acetyl cholinesterase, heightening ‘aliveness’ in the nervous system. He then looked for a natural substance to create the same effect and he found it in Caesium salts. Little did he know it would have such powerful implications for healing and rejuvenating skin tissue! Beth combined these findings with traditional homeopathy to make

his discovery even more powerful and The Gel was developed. In the mid 80’s Beth moved to London and soon after Leslie Kenton, the then Beauty Editor of Harpers Queen and latterly a health guru and writer, discovered The Gel and spread the word. Thirty years later, it has a long and devoted client list including many well-known personalities here and around the world. There are many extraordinary testimonials on the Gagnon Essentials’ website written by individual users as well as doctors and other health practitioners. I have been using this product for years as well as sharing it with my friends and family and can personally vouch for its healing properties. Along with many other users, I think The Gel should be in every household’s medical cabinet and amongst the daily creams of everyone who cares about their skin. The Gel comes in two sizes: a 60ml glass jar for £35 and a 125ml plastic bottle for £67 plus postage. www.gagnonessentials.com or 020 7224 2332 to place an order.
