EDITOR’S LETTER

Approach life as something enchanted... With past reviews, I would sometimes ask before going to sleep for inspiration regarding what I should write in this letter, as if I could expect divine intervention in some dramatic form. I hoped that a dream might tell me something or that I would wake up with a phrase in my head a week or so before Cygnus went to print that would offer a clue to a topic worth covering. Well, let me just say that this doesn’t work. I would also suggest that it must very rarely happen for anyone. Sorry to make it sound unromantic, but it’s more a matter of sitting in front of a blank screen and doing it. Tapping the keys on the laptop. When one sentence is finished you write another one, and so on. Things rarely happen like they do in the stories and I think Saul’s experience on the road to Damascus was exceptional. I believe we are better off paying attention to the host of smaller moments and not getting distracted by big dramas. But that doesn’t make it any the less “divine intervention”. It’s listening to the still small voice instead of the earthquake.

2

In the eastern religions the unfolding of psychic powers or unusual activities during a diligent meditation practice is treated as something to be noticed and then put behind you. These abilities are known as siddhis, and we are urged by the texts and the great teachers not to be distracted by them. I used to think that this was a bit of a grumpy attitude, an austere purist’s stance. Surely we would want to make the most of a supernatural ability, or revel in it as solid evidence that all our spiritual longing had an objective justification. Experience however tells us that those teachers were probably right. A moment, perhaps, when we hear a voice in our ear, see someone who shouldn’t be there or experience a jaw-dropping coincidence – these can be distracting, or we can analyse them in endless circles and get intoxicated by them. Instead it’s those small things that can’t be proven, which in the end make us feel more confident on the path. For example, the vague feeling of a presence that isn’t based on the traditional senses, a visualization becoming strangely crystalline on the twentieth repetition or just the feeling that people like you, that you have many more allies than you thought you had and you hear kind and wonderful things being said about you. It’s a huge act of faith, a multifaceted enterprise, keeping on the spiritual path. But consider these things: Is your life more fulfilling for it all? Are you glad you did it? Are you firmly resolved to continue? I think most of us would answer yes to all these questions. It might sound like heresy but I am not sure I can actually say I am happier. I still have the same neuroses, the same anger and anxiety. On the other hand I feel wiser and capable of more. In the end, it’s just right. I hope these titles we have listed here have that same sense of rightness. The approaches differ widely, but it’s our wish that everything here leaves you feeling stronger as a person and increases the store of love in the

universe. Some books outline a careful and disciplined examination of mind. and others have you jump in with two feet. Some are based in longstanding spiritual practices or religions, while others are connected with art, journeying and depth psychology. One of my favourite books here is The Enchanted Life by Sharon Blackie and it sums everything up for me. If you can, approach life as something enchanted, full of joy, beauty and meaning. If you find it less easy, just walk the walk until it works, keep remembering, and before you know it, everything will start to glow and life will feel ok, not a burden. It doesn’t matter what you believe or what proof you have – everything seems to make sense when it’s been enchanted. By the way, in the next magazine we will be changing things a little. To make sure that our members always get amazing deals we’ll be introducing members-only prices throughout the magazine with the best we can offer - look out for more details in your covering letter. But we haven’t forgotten our loyal supporters who regularly order from us, so we’ll still be offering great general prices everyone can enjoy.

THE ENCHANTED LIFE by Sharon Blackie

Essential summer reading

This is a wonderful book, one of those titles we used to get more of: a bit Jungian, full of stories, dreams, mythical characters who help us understand our own lives a bit better, and loaded with tips and indicators we can use to make everything richer and more meaningful. The author is a psychologist but she writes like a poet, which is no surprise since she lives in Connemara. She points to a life where we see more enchantment in all the events and encounters around us. It’s not overtly mystical or metaphysical but it’s just a short leap from here to a daily life of spirit. 320pp, 217 x 142 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £14.99

HAPPY BREATHING BY WILLIAM BLOOM

P

lease don’t be shocked by this question: what is the connection between poo and nirvana? Or to put it another way, what is the connection between the state of your gut and spiritual wisdom? If you are up-to-speed with developments in medicine you will know that there is substantial evidence now for the health connection between the lower intestine and the brain. This is so well evidenced that some hospitals are performing poo transplants, replacing unhealthy with healthy faeces. The condition of the gut is implicated in so many illnesses. Some of them are obvious, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and cancer. Some are more unexpected such as autism, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other mental health conditions. Please see the book Gut by Giulia Enders, reviewed below. Spiritual traditions have known about the gut’s importance for millennia. You can see it expressed in drawings and sculptures of many goddess figures and Buddhas. These images show a contented being with a large but very comfortable belly. In most traditions of meditation, self-healing and internal martial arts, there is clear guidance to be at ease in our abdomens – to ground, centre and earth our bodies. When we do this, our stomachs relax and sink. There is a shift in our physical and mental states. We become calm in our bodies. Our centre of gravity drops down into our abdomen and is no longer in the chest or head. The feeling is good and comfortable. From this stable and agreeable state we can then meditate and do our spiritual practices more effectively. The teaching is always the same. Be centred and at ease in your body. In martial arts and classical Japanese medicine there is a single word for this state – hara. To be in hara means to be grounded down in your body and at the same time kind and mindful. All of this points to a very clear traditional understanding of mindbody-spirit integration.

4

Be centred and at ease in your body This connection between the gut and our psychological state is so clearly demonstrated in anxiety and tension. When we are anxious our gut is tense, acidic and its microbes unbalanced. Our heartbeat is not integrated. Our breath is uncomfortable. Our brains are over-stimulated and it is difficult to think straight. We may sweat or shake or feel nauseous. Most spiritual traditions teach the same quick and efficient way to manage that horrible state. It is very simple: belly breaths. These are soft, slow and calm breaths down into the

abdomen. Just two or three soft breaths can work wonders. These gentle abdominal breaths send reassuring messages through our neuro-endocrinal system. They are a signal that we are in control and consciously self-managing. Get your abdomen to be at ease – and it will ripple through your whole body, calming your heart, breath and brain. But for me there is more to it than just the physical and mental wellbeing. There is also an important spiritual dimension. This is the crucial concept that the spiritual purpose of being human is to manifest love and compassion, and to become fully mindful and conscious. I am sure that many readers align with this philosophy: we are here to embody love. And one thing is certain. If we are a bag of nerves, dealing with the frantic arousals of survival and anxiety, we cannot fulfil this spiritual purpose. On the contrary, we need a calm foundation, a gut that is at peace. Our bodies need to be at ease so that we are oases of calm and blessing in a wounded world. So whenever you can and whenever you need, remember the universal strategy taught for millennia across the world: Gentle, slow, soft breaths down into the belly. Just two or three soft breaths can shift the mood. This is good for your health, your spiritual growth and everyone around you. Happy breathing. www.williambloom.com

Psychology — BOOK REVIEWS

ANXIETY IS REALLY STRANGE by Steve Haines

PURPOSE by Jessica Huie

There is an epidemic of anxiety in western society, but fortunately there are also lots of books and other resources around to help deal with it. Here is another useful one, packaged like a picture book but including crystalline illustrations by Sophie Standing to help underline its points. It’s a book you can get through in a couple of hours but then read over again to help absorb its tips and explanations much better. It’s also ideal to give to others: it could never hope to cover all the anxiety territory but there are many many ideas that will make coping much easier.

If you are feeling purposeless and unhappy then let Jessica Huie be your inspiration. As a teenage mum, expelled from school, she created two award-winning businesses earning an MBE. She too felt stuck and purposeless but she learnt a way to unstick herself and move forward to a happy and successful life. Jessica shares her story, and the lessons and tools that helped her find, believe and follow her true purpose. Sometimes in life we need a little push. ENDING THE SEARCH by Dorothy Hunt

THE RIGHT TO WRITE by Julia Cameron

A wise and illuminating book in the self-inquiry tradition. Dorothy Hunt is a teacher in the spiritual lineage of Adyashanti, who also contributes a foreword. This takes a sharp and unsparing look at the spiritual search: Who is it that is searching? What is being sought? In the end, the whole process ends back at the beginning, with the Heart of Awareness. This needs to be read carefully and with 100% attention but it’s an account that’s full of beauty and liberating insights. This is definitely a process that you won’t regret embarking on.

First published in 1998 and now updated with a new foreword, this is bestselling author Julia Cameron’s informal and more discursive introduction to her own writer’s life. Where her classic The Artist’s Way is best described as the practical manual, this is the gentler text that you can dip into and be inspired by. It does though include fresh tips and exercises. Julia is such a trusted voice now as a teacher of creativity, and this book is ideal for those who want to broaden their practice, to give themselves some initial galvanization, or to inspire someone else into a life of creativity.

BOOK REVIEWS — Spirituality YOUR HOLINESS by Debbie Ford How this book came to be published is a story in itself. Debbie wrote it during her long battle with cancer, but its existence only came to light after her death, when a medium told her sister there was a book Debbie wanted publishing. We hear in her voice the anger she felt as her cancer took hold, until one day she knelt down in prayer and was filled with joy as she connected with an all-loving presence. Strong and uncompromising, this is a call to prayer in whatever tradition is meaningful to us. It includes wise advice and guidelines to access one’s own sacred environment. It’s a powerful message of love.

THE CHOICE FOR LOVE by Barbara de Angelis

224pp, 143 x 210 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £12.99

Most of us spend our lives longing for love. Love, however, isn’t an emotion, a behaviour or even a link between two people: it’s a limitless field of divine energy that is our true nature. This book is an illuminating and moving guide for transforming your relationship to love itself. You’ll discover how love is a choice you can make from moment to moment and how to use it as the highest spiritual practice. Love doesn’t come from the outside of our life inwards, but rather from the inside of us out. This enlightened understanding means that we don’t have to wait for love to arrive to feel it, or for someone to treat us a certain way to experience it. Previously available in hardback.

CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD BOOK FOUR by Neale Donald Walsch Having said that this dialogue was over, in August 2016 Walsch was awakened again by a voice in the night. What he was told he could not keep silent about and so here is the 4th volume of this bestselling series, where Walsch listens closely to that voice that comes from within. Whatever our feelings about its origins, we must look coolly at what the voice says. For myself, I can say that these are words worth reading. These are powerful teachings, which offer a way out of a dead-end existence and an experience on earth where we risk not fulfilling our destiny. This was in hardback last year, and is now in paperback.

I AM UNICORN by Kirsten Riddle Unicorns are the new big thing and this is a lovely colourful gift book which is both a wonderful tribute and a gateway into the world of unicorns. We in the spiritual community have known for a long time that just because creatures like dragons and unicorns can’t be picked up on the physical plane that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. This book is commercial and “gifty” to be sure, but it actually does contain ideas for contacting unicorns on other planes, and is generous and not flippant. It would also make a wonderful gift for a young fan or someone who might profit from a gentle introduction to these other levels of existence. 144pp, 161 x 125 mm, Hardback, 2018, RRP £7.99

THE GUARDIAN ANGEL ORACLE by Chrissie Astell Angels appear as messengers in many religions and spiritual traditions, sometimes in a blaze of light, or more likely just a feeling of being helped. Here 52 angels known for their positive energies have been chosen as messengers and grouped into four suits headed by Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel. Each card shows a picture of one angelic being and a single word such as Truth or Service which can be used as an affirmation or starting point for meditation. The illustrated booklet gives further interpretation, describing what the angel is bringing and how to ask for signs that the angel is with you.

ONE YEAR ON BY GEOFF NAPIER

I

t is now a whole year since I left the Cygnus team and the timing was perfect. 25 years of scouring a thousand or more new MBS titles each month to share the gems had taken its toll on both Ann and me. I am very grateful to have a complete change, leave this task behind, allowing me to move on. (Thank you Adam, for taking over this massive task!) Without this distraction, I have been learning to re-connect with my intuition, which I think I had stopped listening to altogether. I have also been discovering where I am stuck and am learning to let go as much as I can of those thoughts, attitudes and habits that are holding me back from my own spiritual growth. No longer working for Cygnus day and night has given me the time to address other issues that have been cluttering up my life. I have discovered I was grossly out of balance in many areas. For example, I had forgotten how to laugh and enjoy life. I am now learning to relax and take the time to appreciate our beautiful, breathtaking world. To my amazement, I am discovering how each daily experience is actually a metaphor for understanding my inner journey. Even the smallest detail can throw fresh light on an inner conundrum. It’s a childish example but this new perspective reminds me of the first time I picked up a pair of binoculars and looked at them the “wrong way”. Everything appears so different! A change in perspective can throw fresh light on many a situation. The wise ones of the past are right. How we are emotionally influences the outer events of our lives intimately. When we are following our heart’s promptings, our life begins to flow. When we act out of our conditioning or simply react with our ego, we begin to drift out of the sparkling flow into stagnant waters. Finally, I have had time to remember, acknowledge consciously, and then heal past lives that have been leaving deep resonances throughout my life. Releasing these previously unconscious influences, consciously

Reconnecting with my intuition letting them go by choosing not to identify with them again, has been an amazing discovery. Past lives come to the surface for a reason, and that is to remember the original emotional impact, feel it and then release it. When a bubble bursts, it’s gone. Probably the most enjoyable events of this past year have been my visits to many Cygnus Cafes. Their participants are discovering how freeing from conditioning it is, to simply “be” with each other with open hearts without the fear of judgement. It may take a few meetings before all present feel that this is a safe space to

share their vulnerabilities and so take the next steps towards their authentic selves. We have recently discovered that this period of developing cohesion can be reduced significantly by everyone coming to the meeting having set their intention to be in harmony with the highest good. If you are hungering for real “hearttouching” conversations and the deep rapid spiritual growth that this brings, I thoroughly recommend you seek out the nearest Cygnus Cafe and see if it is right for you. If there isn’t one nearby, you are welcome to contact me by phone or email. I’d be happy to help you set one up. I also have a list of people all over the country who are waiting to join a group when one starts in their area. In these groups, we are learning to accept ourselves as we are, and have as much compassion for ourselves as we have for others. Many of us had forgotten (myself included) that we Human Beings can simply ask for help from the Universe, to erase disharmonious conditioning that obscures the Light which already shines within each of us. It is our birthright. Well, dear friends, I wish you that extra space and those peaceful moments, which may be all you need to begin meeting your perfect essence. It’s there, waiting patiently, to shine more brightly each day of your life. With Love, Geoff Geoff Napier now lives at The Cotswold Healing Retreat Tel: 01285 762982 Email: info@geoffnapier.co.uk

A YEAR OF FOREST SCHOOL by Jane Worroll & Peter Houghton This follow-up title to Play The Forest School Way does not disappoint. Like its predecessor, the book is a gorgeous volume, illustrated throughout with authentic hand-drawn pictures. It is packed full of new outdoor activities to engage and challenge your children. A great feature of this book is that the activities are categorised by seasons, so that you can make the most of the world around you, whatever the weather. And it doesn’t matter if your nearest ‘woodland’ is a giant forest, or a few trees planted on the side of the road - where there is nature, there is a place to explore and play.

BOOK REVIEWS — Shamanism and Other Realities A BETTER PILL by Evelyn M Brodie

THE SACRED SCIENCE by Nick Polizzi This is a great book. Nick is a documentary filmmaker who in 2010 took eight very sick people into the Amazon jungle to see if the native healers there could help them get better. Normally this would not be a Cygnus title – books about plant cures in the Amazon are not really our market – but this was fulfilling to read for many reasons: it describes how the old ways can cure people of the toughest illnesses; it’s full of well-drawn and complex characters; and it coaxes the readers into a fully-formed magical world away from electronic distractions and frivolous pursuits. It’s an immersive and encouraging account.

On the cover of this book there are endorsements from Ervin Laszlo, David Lorimer and Amanda Feilding – you can’t get much more interesting and diverse than that. The author is a London-based healer and shamanic practitioner and she explores a potential integrated health system that might deal effectively with the current epidemic of stress and sense of victimhood and alienation. She refers to the work of Cygnus favourites like Peter Levine and Bruce Lipton. Her combination of shamanic experience and academic grounding place her in a perfect position to offer this readable and extremely coherent account of a new approach to health.

ADVANCED SHAMANISM by James Endredy

FAIRIES by Morgan Daimler

James Endredy is one of the best-known authors on the shamanic experience, based on his more than thirty years’ training with many of the world’s leading teachers. His previous titles have been more introductory, but here he explains some more advanced techniques from, for example, the Tibetan, Mayan and Huichol traditions. We can then apply these techniques to our own daily practices, in order to get a deeper perspective on life in all its complexity. His deep conviction is that quantum physics is itself in turn the scientific expression of shamanism.

This is not a cute title about photogenic fairies but a comprehensive attempt to map all the different manifestations of the “Fair Folk”. In our modern world we are usually disconnected from these other realities but I believe it’s important to be aware of fairies and how they might interact with us. It’s full of history, folklore, stories and sound advice on the blessings, and the dangers, they offer. You risk being labeled as mad for taking an interest in these things, but there are so many stories of encounters here that date back centuries. The author poignantly recounts also that she has seen some things so beautiful that everything in mortal life can seem a pale shadow in comparison.

CONSCIOUSNESS AND EARTH ENERGY BY CILLA CONWAY

I

first encountered earth energy communication years ago, walking on Box Hill. It’s a wonderful place – the land just falls away down to the plains below. The big sky with rolling clouds absorbs your full awareness. There was a little breeze, I remember, and I said something out loud – nothing remarkable… probably that I wasn’t sure where I was. The breeze increased noticeably, and then died away. A bit later, I said something else, and the same thing happened. I realised the land and the breeze were responding to me. The next time I had a specific – though rather more disconcerting – communication from the earth was when I returned from a trip to Findhorn. I was bubbling with excitement on the possibilities of talking to the plants. Anyway, I had just moved into my new house, and the previous owners had left a spindly tree fuchsia in the garden. I asked the Devas (the earth spirits) of the garden to look after it and, next morning, came out in the hope that it might be looking much healthier. Instead, I found it in two halves on the ground. It had not been windy during the night, so maybe a fox or cat had acted for the Devas – but I was quite upset and decided that the Devas were not very nice. Much later, of course, I realised that the Devas, the energies of creation, are not nice. They’re powerful, unsentimental, inhuman, but true. The tree fuchsia was an unnatural human grafting that would never survive in the wild. My next interaction with the Devas was almost accidental, but ended up changing my life. Rather to my own surprise, I had gone to a talk on angels. ‘Someone’, I said at the end without too much thought, ‘should paint angels as they really are – energies that would knock your socks off if you encountered them. Maybe I should paint them.’ ‘Go for it’, the speaker said. I started the next morning – and what emerged was an image that was in no way an angel. It was pure energy, and cosmic – the

It was pure energy, and cosmic – the Deva of the Sun Deva of the Sun. (See above.) As I went on, the images began to form a story – the story of Creation, as I saw it – so I called them the Devas of Creation. They were obviously energies, the blueprints of everything in existence, from a blade of grass to the stars and galaxies. The physical world seemed to form from these blueprints. I began to see that the concept of worlds within worlds (like Blake’s grain of sand) was consistent with the latest quantum ideas – that the universe may be a hologram. I wondered about the

reality behind that hologram. All these ideas came through working on the Deva deck which I self-published in 2014. However, the most important connection I made was something I can’t really explain, arising from a meditation given by Paul Lowe (one of the real Masters). He suggested going inside your body, and feeling the fluttering within, and as you feel it, bringing it up and out until you feel it in the world around you. I did it – and for a few indescribable minutes I felt a part of the earth, part of the sky, part of the ultimate Reality. Words fell away, I fell away, and everything was all one. Today, I know that to connect, I just need to walk on the land in a state of awareness. If you want to connect, to earth and to Consciousness, go outside and walk. Become aware of the wind, the sun or rain, the grass, trees and birds – everything around you. Something might call for your attention: stop and place your full attention on it. Stay with it until you know it’s complete. Then, when you get home, write the experience down. Wendy Erlick (who also writes for Cygnus) and I will be running two workshops on the Devas, Earth Energies and Consciousness, one in June, one in September, in the stunningly beautiful countryside here in Italy. If you’re interested in having some details, please get in touch. Cilla Conway cilla@cillaconway.com The Devas of Creation –

AMONG THE SUMMER SNOWS by Christopher Nicholson One day during the summer the novelist Christopher Nicholson climbed up into the highest places in Scotland to find Britain’s last surviving patches of snow. His account of this mission – accompanied by his own evocative photos – is a work of nature writing that actually transcends that form and becomes a celebration of life and beauty. There is much for the author to muse upon in these high places. Patches of old snow are scruffy, but they are tenacious in their attempts to survive. In the end, this is a book I am so glad that I read. 176pp, 198 x 128 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £8.99

BOOK REVIEWS — Meditation THE PATH OF INSIGHT MEDITATION by Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield

THE YOGA SUTRAS OF PATANJALI by Patanjali

The latest in the Shambhala Pocket Library series, this consists of selected chapters from Seeking the Heart of Wisdom, one of the first great books in the Buddhist field written by westerners. Both authors have gone on to become celebrated teachers. Before writing this book they trained with several Asian masters, and the result is some of the finest teachings on meditation and mindfulness that went on to influence an entire generation of seekers. The lessons are simple and open the way to profound awakening.

There are many editions of this spiritual classic – one of the first in history to describe the state of enlightenment and how to achieve it – but this is distinguished because it’s the Swami Vivekananda edition, including his introduction and notes, and also because it’s packaged as an elegant hardback that can literally fit in your pocket. Vivekananda was one of the first of the great Indian teachers to come to the west. It’s a text that deserves to be studied and meditated upon closely, so this is an ideal format for an introduction to Indian spirituality.

OUT OF YOUR MIND by Alan Watts

MINDFUL THOUGHTS FOR CITY DWELLERS by Lucy Anna Scott

Here are six teachings from the trailblazing writer and broadcaster of the 60s and 70s, republished for a new generation. He plunges straight in with a look at our basic sense of what life is about in the West, our models of Christianity and science. He puts his thoughts in a readable way, but they are challenging theories that make one pause and think. What is consciousness? Are we trapped in a conventional awareness? He calls meditation a perfect waste of time, but reaches this by asking what is time for except to be wasted. For those who want to be challenged and moved forward on their path this is an essential read.

This pocket-sized book is full of exercises of appreciation for those living in the city. Written with first-hand experience from a country-born-girl-turned-city-dweller, Scott really showcases the things to love about an urban metropolis. Each chapter is accompanied by cute, colourful illustrations and the chapters themselves are small and easy to digest. It is a great volume to keep in your handbag and take out and browse when you’re feeling stressed or upset, because wherever you are, you can find the beauty in life. 160pp, 135 x 116 mm, Hardback, 2018, RRP £5.99

BEAR AWARENESS by Ajahn Brahm A Buddhist monk for over forty years, English-born Ajahn Brahm is the abbot of a monastery in Western Australia. He is also the author of six books, which have shown him to be a wise and funny teacher. We don’t normally carry specifically Buddhist books, but this one – consisting of answers to questions posed by his students – is so entertaining and helpful, with many wise stories and funny anecdotes. He is like a spiritual agony aunt, and I believe this book will be extremely helpful to those of us despairing of meditation, labouring with anxiety or grappling with the temptations of food, alcohol and sex. 225pp, 229 x 155 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £12.99

BREATHING LOVE by Jennie Lee

SAVE 30%

There are so many books now about mindfulness and simple meditation, but only from the point of view of making your own life easier. That’s important of course, but there is so much more – for example, loving kindness and meditation as a spiritual practice in order to spread more love and even embody love. This is a beautiful book, attractively presented and full of personal stories and illustrative anecdotes. The author is a certified yoga therapist. It’s a truly optimistic book which offers a path to a wiser and more fulfilling life. 240pp, 203 x 133 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £14.99

A Guide to Starting a Cygnus Cafe

W

e know that we have many members who are interested in starting Cygnus Cafés in their community, and that they have questions, both about how to get started and also how they want their group to run. Below is a miniguide to running a Cygnus Café to give you a taste of what you can expect – if you would like to start your own Café please do get in touch. ❖ The starting point for setting up a group is the

purpose of a Cygnus Cafe, and that is creating a space for you to meet people of like mind in your own locality. Nowadays it is often the case that you might find you can only get so far by yourself using a book. Sometimes it can be a great help on your spiritual journey to share issues that feel unresolved, with others of like heart.

❖ Many groups take a little

while to gain momentum, and this is normal. I suggest you avoid the temptation of trying to find a perfect arrangement. ❖ Setting up for the

meeting we suggest that the host prepares the room in the most appropriate way, arranging the seating so that everyone has eye-to-eye contact. Meetings generally begin with everyone taking turns to say their name and where they are from and, if they wish, a mention about something they may want to talk about later. ❖ Many groups have found it

❖ Most of our groups run in what

very helpful to keep the level of the meeting at a higher level by setting the intention of the group to the highest good at the beginning of the meeting. So that, whatever happens, the highest good may come out of it.

we would call an unstructured way, they have no agenda and allow the magic of the moment to provide the topics spontaneously, depending on who wishes to share their recently experienced insights or share their current concerns of the heart.

❖ Gradually most groups begin

to observe how Cygnus Cafes can grow in depth as participants feel more comfortable and they can share their vulnerabilities and “soft spots”. This gives others the confidence to share their concerns or doubts.

❖ When getting down to

practicalities the first thing you need is a space, generally meetings are held in members’ homes or quiet rooms in cafés or community spaces. Any room hire costs etc. are shared by the participants on a donation basis. We advise avoiding noisy venues or spaces that have no door helps a great deal. You need a safe space where you know you will not be interrupted. ❖ When thinking about when and how often to

hold your meetings, consider the needs of the group deciding when is best for (most of ) you. Some groups choose mornings, others evenings, some even choose a weekend. Larger groups sometimes choose to have two meetings in a month, once in the evening and once in the morning, to match the different lifestyles. Most meeting last for around 2 hours and our advice is to stick to the same day every month, week or fortnight to allow people to organise their diaries.

We love hearing from our members and finding out what you are up to at your cafe meetings. Please send your comments, thoughts and updates to editor@cygnus-books.co.uk so that we can include them on this page.

❖ For meeting support you can contact Vicky Hartley at Cygnus on

Spirituality — BOOK REVIEWS TAILS FROM THE AFTERLIFE by Kristy Robinett

IMMORTAL SELF by Aaravindha Himadra

Kristy is a professional psychic medium who has written about many aspects of metaphysics and life on the other side. In this book it’s all about beloved pets and companion animals, who live on in spirit and continue to express their undying devotion. Many of them are of course dogs and cats, but rabbits and parrots are also included. The book offers practical suggestions for dealing with grief and for making contact with your animal friends, but above all this book is made by its wonderful heart-warming stories.

This is the luminous story of a remarkable journey to a secret Himalayan valley. It begins in Delhi when our narrator is approached by a stranger in the street, offering to guide him home. It is a long and challenging trip, which includes several amazing encounters. Eventually he arrives at the Amarpura Valley, home of the legendary Amartya masters. To be invited here is the result of good karma and he goes on to experience visions and receive words from wise and ancient masters. It is almost impossible to believe that places and people such as these can still exist in the 21st century, and yet this magical story challenges our accepted beliefs about reality.

COSMIC MESSENGERS by Elizabeth Peru

NATIVE AMERICAN WISDOM edited by Alan Jacobs

Elizabeth Peru is an Australian spiritual teacher whose forecasts are read in more than 80 countries worldwide. Cosmic Messengers is a personal development book for those who want to follow a psychic or energetic path. Elizabeth gives simple tips and exercises for awakening these powers with the aim of reconnecting with your soul or finding your life’s purpose. Once we start to take action, the assurance is that the universe will then kick in and start to get behind your ultimate flowering.

For Native Americans the world was a living spiritual environment. The many tribes with their diverse traditions all saw Nature as sacred and to be worshipped, so their stories, songs and speeches are full of natural metaphors. This is a rich collection of thought provoking prose and poetry that transports the reader to a world of forests, meadows, dreams and dance. Pocket sized, it is something to dip into at odd moments when feeling the need to be uplifted and inspired. Many of the brief pieces are anonymous, but some are attributed to famous names like Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and Black Elk.

JOHN HOLLAND ON OPENING YOUR PSYCHIC AWARENESS

I

n today’s society, most of mankind has forgotten what incredible, intuitive, sentient beings we are. Many of us have wandered too far into the realm of analytical thinking. We exist mainly in the physical world, which results in our focusing too much on everything that’s outside ourselves. I think it’s important, from time to time, to remember that there’s a whole innerworld ready and waiting for you that can be accessed whenever you want. The entire second half of this book was written for people who want to understand and develop their psychic and mediumship potential. Whether you’re curious about what it takes or have a desire to become a medium, I hope this section provides you with the guidance you’ve been seeking. Equally, if you’re looking to understand the workings of your own spiritual abilities, then this part of the book will be of great benefit. We all possess the spiritual ability to become more consciously aware of the inner workings of our soul, with all its capabilities and innate sensitivity. In other words, we have the natural capacity to utilize our intuitive psychic abilities in almost any area of our lives. One of my favourite statements to say during my presentations is: “We all came from God, and I don’t think a Divine Intelligence would let us come here without a little help. The gift of intuition is our connection to the Divine.” Although intuition is a gift that’s given to each and every soul, it’s important to remember that we’re responsible for developing it ourselves. When my students start exploring their psychic potential, they often ask me, “What’s the difference between psychic ability and pure intuition?” There’s a fine line between the words psychic and intuition, and the two are often used interchangeably. The use of one can often lead to the other, as a natural progression. Psychic ability is simply the natural extension of our intuition. Most of us know what intuition means. How many times have you heard someone say, “I’ve got a hunch

14

The gift of intuition is our connection to the Divine that . . .” or, “My instincts are telling me this . . .” or, “I have a strong gut feeling that ...”? These are all forms of intuition. It’s that hunch or that gentle nudge that so often comes out of the blue. When we learn to recognize, notice, and act upon these feelings, we can establish a strong foundation for the development of our psychic abilities. Psychic ability is being able to take control of your intuition and make these special senses work for you. In fact, the word psychic is from the Greek psychikos, meaning “of the soul.” This signifies that as spiritual beings, we’re able to access, receive, and transmit information that reaches way beyond our physical body and our innate five senses.

Becoming aware of your psychic abilities is useful for more than becoming a medium or connecting to your loved ones. These abilities can greatly assist you in your personal and professional lives, as well as your relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Opening the door to your natural psychic abilities is an exciting, enlightening, and life-changing experience. I’ve received thousands of letters and e-mails from past students who’ve told me that since they started working on their all-too-oftendormant abilities, they feel as if their soul or spirit is more consciously alive and awake. They say they’re no longer sleepwalking through life. I always enjoy teaching my psychic-development class (which is one of my signature workshops) because many who attend feel like they have little or no psychic ability when they arrive. But, once they go through the training and start to receive information via their psychic senses, the transformation is obvious. You can see it written all over their faces. It’s almost as if they discovered something new, even though the ability has always been there, waiting to be accessed. Using your spiritual psychic abilities is quite natural. You can learn to recognize, practice, and trust those intuitive nudges more and more. By doing so, it becomes a wonderful resource for guidance, transformation, and selfempowerment that you can call upon for the rest of your life. Copyright John Holland 2018

BRIDGING TWO REALMS by John Holland Have you ever had questions about the Other Side? Do you ever ask where it is, or what people do there? As a gifted psychic medium John Holland helps readers understand this subject and ultimately develop their own intuitive ability. He advises how to find a medium and how to be aware of the presence of a loved one. Mediumship is a service to those in the spirit world, but it can also involve dealing with vulnerable people. She includes information on how to string beads, useful knots to use, which supplies you will need as well as facts about the different types of beads, all the while allowing the reader to concentrate on the process of creating the beads, rather than on specific techniques.

WRITTEN TO CELEBRATE EARTH DAY BY PIERRE PRADERVAND Pierre Pradervand’s new book is out in June and here is an early extract from it to celebrate the earth: Especially written for Earth Day April 22.

Mistress of the universe, we bless you... FOR THE INCREDIBLE BEAUTY OF CREATION by Pierre Pradervand

The incredible beauty of nature defies the wildest imagination. From the perfection of a tiny alpine flower no one will ever even see to the splendor of a star-studded summer’s night, through the intricate beauty of a seashell to the breathtaking harmony of a spider’s web, all this grandiose symphony has been laid out for our pure enjoyment. Mistress of the universe, we bless You for the incredible perfection and splendor of the spectacle You have created for our constant rejoicing. For the sheer miracle of a substance as mysterious and omnipresent as water to the rugged beauty of a mountain range, for the amazing functioning of living creatures and systems of all sorts that challenge our deepest knowledge to the constantly renewed abundance of Your goodness expressed in the produce of the earth and seas, including the unbelievable variety and wisdom of the animal kingdom we have barely begun to grasp, we bless You.

16

In front of the utter perfection and symmetry of every single flower, seashell, plant, crystalline rock, we stand in awe and bless You. For the century-old sequoia or oak trees in their majesty which sprang from a tiny grain or acorn to the rolling of the galaxies, for the magic of microbes and all other microorganisms to the silent communication systems between plants and between animals and plants, we bless the incredible Intelligence that runs this phenomenal show called the universe and fall on our knees in utter awe.

Thank You, thank You, thank You for including us for our sheer enjoyment in this grandiose spectacle, the reason of which is beyond anything we could ever imagine. And finally, may we be reminded that we are not spectators, but actors in this happening which is simply Your Boundless Love expressing Itself out of sheer joy. Daily we are Your dance of delight, Your pure goodness in ecstatic motion, Your holy choir. Pierre Pradervand, from 365 Blessings to Heal Myself and the World

The Joy in Living — BOOK REVIEWS

THE WORLD IS A NICE PLACE by Amy Molloy

LUMINOUS LIFE by Jacob Israel Liberman

Amy Molloy spent a decade interviewing inspiring people who had survived incredible challenges in life: terrorist attacks, natural disasters, as well as the everyday events that make life freeze. She wanted to know the secret formula that enabled some people to move forward – joyfully – after experiencing difficulty. The World Is A Nice Place is what she discovered; an insightful, honest book combining anecdotes and practical tools that will help you use your past to empower your future. 256pp, 216 x 140 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £12.99

This new book by the author of the classic Light: Medicine of the Future includes high praise on the jacket from Bruce Lipton, Deepak Chopra and Larry Dossey. We are all used to understanding plants and animals as being guided by light, but little attention is given to how it fundamentally guides humans too. This immensely readable book is packed full of anecdotes plus the latest research, indicating that maybe we are too centred on our minds and we should instead submit to the luminous intelligence we call light.

MANDALAS & MEDITATIONS FOR EVERYDAY LIVING by Cassandra Lorius

NOTES FROM THE UNIVERSE ON LOVE & CONNECTION by Mike Dooley

This is a wonderful full-colour book which is also excellent value. There’s a large mandala for every week of the year, as well as a description of its theme and a meditation on the opposite page. The introduction to the book describes the history of mandalas – which occur in a myriad of different cultures – and offers advice on which themed mandala to choose and how to meditate on it. These images are both soothing and illuminating and perhaps in the end you’ll even be inspired to create some for yourself. 144pp, 234 x 191 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £12.99

This is a 60-card deck from the author of Playing The Matrix and Life On Earth, full of witty and inspirational aphorisms and statements. Decks like these can sometimes be fluffy and too sparkly but these are all addressed to us by “The Universe” and are witty but loving at the same time. We can draw one a day at random for inspiration and guidance, or work our way through the deck holding that one thought all day, such as “Don’t be fooled by The Players, and don’t be fooled by yourself…there’s no one more lovable, nor loved, than you. And I know everyone.”

BOOK REVIEWS — Health OUTSIDE THE BOX CANCER THERAPIES by Dr Mark Stengler and Dr Paul Anderson The authors are both naturopathic doctors with decades of expertise in the field, and this is an introduction to all the options available to cancer sufferers who want to explore alternative possibilities for treatment and for coping with the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It’s a calm exposition of the latest research and not a rejection of mainstream treatment – it’s simply that many of these naturopathic approaches can be profoundly supportive and effective. Most of us will suffer or know someone who will suffer from cancer during our lives and this book offers hope and encouragement. 384pp, 229 x 178 mm, Hardback, 2018, RRP £20.00

THE HEART OF WELLNESS by Kavitha Chinnaiyan Christiane Northrup calls this book “a must-read for anyone who wants to truly understand what it means to live whole-heartedly”. Dr Chinnaiyan is a cardiologist and associate professor of medicine and here she combines her expert medical knowledge with the ancient wisdom of Yoga and Ayurveda. She aims to break free of the notion that disease is something to fight: instead she offers a variety of self-help techniques that will enable you to apply the best of Indian wisdom to your health and well-being, including also a host of delicious recipes. 336pp, 229 x 153 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £16.99

CHANGE THE STORY OF YOUR HEALTH by Carl Greer

I LOVE MY JUICER by Natalie Savona

The story of our health is more in our control than we might think. We can not only reframe our experiences but actually achieve less stress, a sense of wellbeing, and better physical health if we are willing to identify our health story and start to rewrite it. This shamanic and Jungian specialist comes up with a rich tapestry of immersive techniques from many traditions for getting past obstacles and reframing unhelpful habits. The journey is as enjoyable as the outcome, but the healings in some of the stories he tells are truly remarkable.

This is the complete juice book. It’s in a nice larger format and has vibrant colour photographs of all the drinks. The various recipes are divided into themes, including detoxification, immunity boosting and skin maintenance. There are instructions on how best to prepare the drinks, plus a great deal of health advice and tips relating to the best use of all the different fruits and vegetables. The author trained at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition and is now a post-doctorate researcher at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

EXHAUSTED TO ENERGIZED by Dr Libby Weaver

LIVER DETOX by Christopher Vasey

Everything is more difficult when you’re exhausted. Fact. We often focus on weight as a measurement of wellbeing, but Dr Weaver argues that we should be measuring our energy levels. Weaver provides practical ideas about how to counteract your lack of energy, based on her ‘three pillars’ approach: biochemical, nutritional and emotional. Weaver has a PhD in biochemistry, but she doesn’t blind you with science, rather she slowly walks you through what is relevant and makes it interesting and accessible to anyone reading. The book is not a scientific manual on personal energy; it has been designed to educate the reader and lift spirits, therefore enabling everyone to live a life with great energy and share their gifts with the world!

Many consider the liver to be the most important organ in the body. It is responsible for filtering out toxins and neutralising any substances that are harmful to our health. So it is essential to keep it in good condition and functioning at an optimum capacity. The main advice is to achieve a good balance, impose some moderate restrictions on what you take in, and include certain supplements to your health regime. Taking it further, the author discusses hepatic plants useful for stimulating liver function alongside heat, exercise and massage tips. A compact and practical guide to liver self help. 128pp, 210 x 137 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £9.99

Healing — BOOK REVIEWS CHARGE AND THE ENERGY BODY by Anodea Judith

EVERYDAY KUNDALINI by Kathryn McCusker

In the last review we featured Anodea’s classic Wheels of Life, which was published in 1987, and now we are including her brand new book, which synthesizes her ground-breaking chakra work with the latest discoveries from psychology and energy medicine. “Charge” for her means the life force itself, and this practical guide introduces us to the life force in all its manifestations. It is nothing less than a manual for healing and reinvigorating your whole existence. The author is both a PhD in psychology and a certified yoga instructor. Powerful teachings from someone you can trust.

At first the title sounds contradictory. Isn’t Kundalini something veiled in mystery and reserved for secret and special practices? We discover though that it has been misunderstood for decades in the West, and is recognised today as a profound and transformational path for anyone who seeks it out. The exercises and meditations help develop an elevated consciousness by awakening the dormant energy that we all possess, even though most people are unaware of its existence. It resides in the subtle energy system, rising through the chakras from the base chakra where it resides.

DODGING ENERGY VAMPIRES by Christiane Northrup

FLOWER ESSENCES FOR WELL-BEING by Barbara Olive

There are many titles coming out now about highly sensitive people and empaths. We have featured quite a few of them at Cygnus and this is important because such people have a lot to offer and need encouragement. This brand new book from bestselling author and medical expert Christiane Northrup highlights a possible downside to being an empath, where you are vulnerable to others who suck your energy and disrupt your life. The book provides plenty of tips and resources, coupled with the latest research on how to negotiate your relations with these exploitative beings.

Barbara is a pioneer in flower essence healing, who lives in Queensland and advises clients all around the world. Full colour photos introduce readers to the plants themselves, and beautifully designed pages tell us how to create these essences, including an introduction to the principles behind energetic healing. Barbara then goes on to outline techniques for using the essences and their specific applications when it comes to treating various symptoms. There are also sections on treating children and animals.

ENERGY STRANDS by Denise Linn A well known international teacher in the field, Denise Linn explores how energy works in the body by way of strands, cords of energy that connect us to everything in the Universe. They can be positive and energising, or negative. Strands link from many different environments, from dreams, the collective unconscious, even from our pets, and most commonly they attach through the chakras. Here we can learn to recognise our strands, perhaps just by visualization or dowsing. It is then possible to protect oneself from psychic attack, clear unwanted energy ties and strengthen the strands that empower us.

MEDICAL MEDIUM THYROID HEALING (AUDIO) by Anthony William Here is the unabridged audio version of one of our best-selling books. In it, Anthony turns his attention to all the illnesses, conditions and other phenomena associated with the activity of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is the new hot topic in health but it is not actually the original reason behind symptoms like fatigue, fibromyalgia and depression. Since he was four, Anthony has been aware of his gift to read people’s conditions and more importantly advise them how to heal. The experts don’t know what’s happening, but you can find out the truth here. 6 CDs, Boxed Set, 2018, RRP £26.99

THE SELF-ESTEEM COACH By Lynda Field

Written in a down to earth, conversational style this book still offers some real insight into how it’s possible to change negative thought patterns, get back up when you’re feeling down and work towards a more fulfilling life. It’s also got lots of exercises that you can complete during the 10 days (and beyond) which will raise awareness of your thoughts and behaviours that could do with being reconsidered! This is a book for anyone wanting to stop beating themselves up emotionally and who’d like to try out some practical ways to feel better.

HEALING BERRIES By Kirsten Hartvig

The companion volume to Healing Spices, this book illuminates the many benefits of berries in meals and drinks. We all love smoothies but only now are scientists, cooks and indeed the general public waking up to their immense health benefits. Kirsten also flags up the great joy in foraging and collecting the berries for yourself. And then there are the recipes – not all drinks and desserts! There are main courses like Pasta with Walnut and Blackcurrant Pesto and Rose Hip Risotto. It’s an immensely fun and educational book. Paperback, 240pp, 155 x 236 mm, 2016, RRP £12.99

WHY I AM A BUDDHIST By Stephen T Asma

Many books in recent years have made the case for Buddhism. What makes this one fresh and exciting is Stephen Asma’s iconoclasm, irreverence, and hardheaded approach to the subject. He presents a spiritual practice that does not require a belief in creeds or dogma - a practice that is psychologically sound, intellectually credible and aesthetically appealing. It is a practice that does not require a diet of brown rice, burning incense, and putting both your mind and your culture in deep storage. This is Buddhism for everyone, especially for people who are uncomfortable with religion but yearn for a spiritual compass. 256pp, 192 x 148mm, Paperback, 2011, RRP £8.99

HEALING SPICES By Kirsten Hartvig

A fascinating collection of 50 different spice profiles from ajowan to zedoary and including better-known ones like coriander and cloves. Wars used to be fought over spices and with this book you can get some idea why. For a start they make food taste great and the second half of the book includes a wide range of recipes, which use the spices to their best effect. It’s beautifully and clearly laid out. THE SPIRIT OF ZEN By Solala Towler

Filled with stories, history and practical guidance from the masters of Zen, The Spirit of Zen is a journey through a world of paradox and insight, offering guidance on the path to enlightenment, as well as the down-to-earth, living-inthe-moment path of Zen practice. These stories, many of which are about satori or enlightenment, are funny, outrageous and full of paradoxes and puns; they are also earthy, sometimes even scatological. Nevertheless, they are filled with deep teachings on the Buddhist path and contain the true flavour of Zen. 176pp, Paperback, 160 x 240 mm, 2016, £10.99

THE HEALING POWER OF LIFE ALIGNMENT By Phillipa Lubbock

This is Philippa’s second book about this crucial and exciting method of healing and it develops and expands on what she wrote about in her first. It includes a foreword by Jeff Levin, to whom this form of energy medicine was first transmitted and who has given his blessing for Philippa to communicate this to the world. Fundamentally everything you need to heal and align to your soul’s purpose is already within, and in a healing session you will connect with your inner guide and release the blockages on your life’s path. She tells the story of Life Alignment and the book is full of inspiring stories of people who in different ways have healed themselves. 192pp, 152 x 229 mm, Paperback, 2017, £12.99

The Gel An essential for everyone’s health and beauty By Jayne Beaumont

The Gel is one of those rare health and beauty secrets that have been passed by ‘word of mouth’ since its inception in the 1980’s. It is a product of Eastern wisdom and Western science with its magical mix of ingredients that work wonders on the skin whether repairing scar tissue, burns and bruising or simply improving the skin’s condition and tone. Developed by an American health practitioner, Beth Gagnon in her home in Los Angeles after becoming aware of the findings of research completed in 1975 by a Chinese doctor in a Beijing hospital who wanted to understand how acupuncture worked. He found that acupuncture triggered the activity of the enzyme, Acetyl cholinesterase, heightening ‘aliveness’ in the nervous system. He then looked for a natural substance to create the same effect and he found it in Caesium salts. Little did he know it would have such powerful implications for healing and rejuvenating skin tissue! Beth combined these findings with traditional homeopathy to make

his discovery even more powerful and The Gel was developed. In the mid 80’s Beth moved to London and soon after Leslie Kenton, the then Beauty Editor of Harpers Queen and latterly a health guru and writer, discovered The Gel and spread the word. Thirty years later, it has a long and devoted client list including many well-known personalities here and around the world. There are many extraordinary testimonials on the Gagnon Essentials’ website written by individual users as well as doctors and other health practitioners. I have been using this product for years as well as sharing it with my friends and family and can personally vouch for its healing properties. Along with many other users, I think The Gel should be in every household’s medical cabinet and amongst the daily creams of everyone who cares about their skin. The Gel comes in two sizes: a 60ml glass jar for £35 and a 125ml plastic bottle for £67 plus postage. www.gagnonessentials.com or 020 7224 2332 to place an order.
