EDITOR’S LETTER

The purpose of Cygnus... maybe? Maybe I think about all these things too much… Questions like: what do I truly believe, or what is Cygnus actually for? The books we present in these pages vary so widely, and in the end what unites them is that they are telling an important truth, that they are alternative to mainstream thinking and that they say something new. Because by contrast there is such a huge variation in subject matter: this time we include books on the meaning of some of the oldest structures in the world, on the life of a middle-age divorcee who has moved to Paris, on how kefir can help with anxiety and on the true, pared-down nature of consciousness itself. Of course our dearest wish is that you like them. We have also made a small change this time around and included a Cygnus Price plus a Cygnus Members’ Price. We want to make it clearer to you that – thanks to the support of the various publishers and suppliers – we are able to offer lower prices to all of the valued Cygnus community, but that we are also able to offer even more to

2

those who are willing to commit to paid membership. Every single one of you is important to us, but now that, since our rebirth, we are able to run and not just walk cautiously, we want to offer more in return for people’s deeper commitment. By the way, thanks to all the friends who have asked how Cygnus is getting on now and who wish us well. The delicate times are now years behind us and we are doing well, thanks to your support. So, to return to what Cygnus is really for, it’s to support all of you who are invested in this community, whatever spiritual beliefs you might have, whatever you think about the true nature of reality and however non-mainstream your views might be. Incidentally, no one here is knocking science as it’s now expressed in modern culture. In Natalie Goldberg’s lovely new memoir about her cancer treatment, she specifically points out that she used conventional treatment for her illness and how grateful she is for it. It’s just that our beliefs are scientific too, in a different, more felt way, maybe in a more Gnostic way. For all the advances that have been made regarding rights, gender and sexuality issues, there is still a major prejudice against spiritual believers, against those who have beliefs that go against the contemporary wave of scientific materialism. Consequently we can feel lonely and weird. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of weird(!) but haven’t we all had those moments when we have opened up to someone a little bit about what we do or believe or read and have been knocked back by a patronizing look that screams out loud that the other one is thinking “oh dear, I wasn’t expecting that from such a seemingly intelligent person…” Cygnus is here for all of us, to share views and feel part of a community. To share the books, decks and audio we like and help one another get as much as possible from all that great material. Ultimately to feel less alone and to realize that we are many and that the sometimes

cold and ruthless mainstream isn’t all there is. And to the other question: what do I truly believe? More and more I realize that I can’t articulate it and that maybe it’s not even that good to try and articulate it. I am where life has taken me, and from now on I have to try and commit more and more to giving way to that current. Where I am is fine. I also feel strongly that the current will continue to carry me where I need to be. There’s not one book, or talk, or encounter that is going to change everything: I have, though, got a huge amount from all the books and decks we have looked over for this Review and previous Reviews, and they will push me further and take me closer to where I need to be. We can all change our lives radically and consciously, using one big push or one act of will. We can reprogramme our lives, of course we can. Yet for most of us we need to stay open to the beings around us, to life around us, and observe how we are expressing ourselves and then stay true to our values. Yes, I know what my spiritual beliefs are, even though I can’t do full justice to them with words.

ATMOSPHERIC FLOWERS IN WATERCOLOUR BY JEAN HAINES

Creating more than just art “Learn from nature; absorbing as much information as possible until you find yourself breathing life into your art.” At the beginning of each new book that I write, I try to explain to the reader why I am writing and what they can expect from the following pages. You may believe you have purchased a book that will help you paint flowers in a loose style. While that is true, I am hoping that you gain far more from the chapters to come. I want to take you on a journey that involves using watercolour materials to create beautiful paintings. I also want to share with you the joy I feel when painting flowers and how doing so has improved my life. More importantly, I want you to discover your true artist’s soul. I hope to pull out of you the very best floral artist you can be; so that you surprise yourself not only with your art but by the peaceful way you feel when you have finished painting floral work. I want you to yearn to paint each day, every time you see a flower, a plant, or even an insect, as we are looking at all these fascinating subjects within this book.

For now I want to share how I first fell in love with flowers, long before I even started painting them. As a child I lived with my grandparents. One of the first things my Grandfather told me was that there were fairies at the foot of their garden. He told me I should never pick a flower, because I might disturb them. Crayons were placed in my child-sized hands and I played with colour as soon as I was able. I am thankful, because this is where my love of art began. All the gorgeous flowers in my Grandfather’s garden were soon my favourite subjects. I learned about their colour, form, and about each special season when they would begin to appear. Over time I have found that my life has been like seasons: my childhood and youth as the springtime of my life, followed by the beautiful summer as I grew, married and had children of my own. I would like to think I am now in the autumn rather than the winter of my lifetime – but oh, how much I have learned along the way. In all of my international watercolour workshops I am asked how to paint flowers. Before you can paint them as a subject, I believe you have to absorb information about

them: this will enable you to breathe life into your paintings. That is what I am hoping to do with this book: help you create more than just art. I want you to achieve a level where your paintings are stunningly unique and speak to the viewers of your finished pieces, so that they feel they can touch soft, silky petals or take in the heady perfume of each bloom you have completed in watercolour. Petal by petal, step by step, we are about to begin a journey together that, hopefully, will be totally memorable. I can’t wait to get started. The latest book from the author of the bestseller Paint Yourself Calm. Likewise this is a large format full colour hardback and as such it’s excellent value. Jean is a skillful teacher and this is an ideal text for both beginners and experienced painters to learn from. Of course it’s primarily a book about painting skills, but the author always brings self-fulfillment into the mix. It’s full of practical tips and exercises but the author is also mindful of the calming aspects of art. Ultimately there’s little that can be more therapeutic than paining bright sunflowers, roses and bluebells. 176pp, 296 x 243 mm, Hardback, 2018, RRP £19.99

STEVE TAYLOR ON HIS NEW EDITION OF THE FALL

T

he Fall is mainly about the human race’s past. It’s about how we fell ‘asleep’ – how we ‘fell’ out of a natural state of harmony and connection into discord and separateness. But the book is also about our future, and the corrective process to the fall. It’s about the transcendence of discord and separateness, and a return to harmony and connection. It describes how, individually and collectively, we are ‘waking up’. The book began with my sense that there are massive psychological differences between indigenous peoples and modern western peoples. Most notably, I was struck by their different relationship to the natural world – indigenous people’s respectful attitude to nature, their sense of its sacredness and aliveness, and their awareness that it was pervaded with a spiritual force, compared to modern people’s exploitative attitude to it. Indigenous peoples seemed to have a sense of connection to nature which we have lost. I began to sense that a major psychological shift had occurred at some point in human history: the development of a new sense of separation and individuality. The more I read, the more evidence I found for this. I had an experience that I’ve never had with any other book – The Fall came into being very easily and inevitably, almost as if I was being helped and guided. I felt that I was being steered in the direction of all the material I needed. As a result, the book was easy to write. I felt like it was coming through me, rather than from me. The first edition of The Fall was published in 2005, and its reception justified my faith in it. It has sold tens of thousands of copies in several different languages and even now, I regularly receive appreciative e-mails from readers, telling me that the book has changed their lives, made them understand the human race better, and made them feel more optimistic about the future. In the book’s new edition, I provide an update. The foundation of the

4

With Hope for Humanity book is my argument that prehistoric human beings lived in a naturally spiritual and harmonious state, with a strong sense of connection to nature, in groups that were egalitarian and peaceful, without male domination or hierarchy. It was only once the ‘Ego Explosion’ occurred – when some human groups developed a strong sense of individuality and separation from their environment – that pathological traits such as warfare, the oppression of women, and hierarchical unequal societies developed. I am pleased that a lot of new evidence has accumulated that supports the idea that early human beings were peaceful, and that warfare didn’t become common until relatively

recent times. Another aspect of this book that has become more widely accepted is the idea that the lives of prehistoric human beings were much easier, healthier and happier than those of later peoples. I suggested that - as well as being free of warfare, male domination and social hierarchy - prehistoric hunter-gatherers had a good diet, were largely free of illness and had long life spans. There is also recent evidence that supports the book’s other main argument: that at the present time (and over the past 300 years or so) the human race has been slowly moving into a ‘trans-Fall’ era. In the new edition, I suggest that the ‘trans-Fall’ movement has intensified over the last decade and cite research showing that spiritual or mystical experiences have become more common. The Fall has struck such a deep chord in so many people that I feel it must be confirming knowledge that was already inside all us – truths that we have forgotten but that were always part of our collective unconscious. Perhaps we all sense, deep down, that the fall was an aberration, and that human beings’ true nature is not to be full of discord and to create so much conflict. Perhaps we all sense, deep down, that the present bleak and chaotic phase of human history is only temporary, and that we are entering a new, brighter, more harmonious phase. THE FALL by Steve Taylor

First published in 2005, this is Steve Taylor’s bestselling classic on the ways in which humanity has gone wrong and how it can get back on track. This updated brand new edition includes an afterword in which he discusses more recent developments in the field. He also asks himself what he might have done differently now compared to 13 years ago – the answer is, not much. There is praise on the cover from Colin Wilson, Gary Lachmann and Nicholas Lezard. It’s clear in many ways that this is a vital, provocative and inspiring take on history, full of mature and constructive suggestions that will go on to give the reader hope. It’s both well-informed – Steve is a senior lecturer at Leeds Metropolitan University – and immensely readable. 360pp, 216 x 140 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP: £14.99

ANYTHING CAN BE HEALED by Martin Brofman

With the publication of a new title from the late Swiss healer, I thought it would be good to offer his original classic book once again. Quite simply it’s one of the best and most practical healing manuals that’s ever been published. In 1975 he healed himself of terminal cancer in his spinal cord, and from that point he wanted to share his technique with the world. It’s a simple approach that combines western psychology and the eastern chakra system. The book is illustrated and patiently lays out every aspect of his approach. Don’t forget, anything CAN be healed. 216pp, 230 x 154 mm, Paperback, 2003, RRP £12.99

DREAMS THAT CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE by Larry Burk and Kathleen O’Keefe-Kanavos

This empowering book puts dreaming firmly into the medical arena. In ancient times dreams were used for diagnosis, but this has long been lost. Now scientific research is starting to show how precognitive dreams can give early warning of an issue. This book contains personal stories from the author’s project with breast cancer women and those with other illnesses. With a brief guide on how to collect and interpret dreams, this is mainly a forceful collection of accounts which back up the research and show how many people survived serious illness because dreams pointed the way to treatment and medication that saved their lives. 288pp, 228 x 151 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £14.99

This is the person we meet here, talking openly about his journey, the meditation techniques, diet and exercise routines that continue to keep him healthy, active and youthful, the tough time, exacerbated by media frenzy, dealing with the deaths of his wife Sara and his on-screen wife Anne Kirkbride and a nightmare year waiting for a court appearance. A gentle and honest insight into the true world of someone we all feel we know well.

THE POWER OF THE INFINITY SYMBOL by Barbara Heider-Rauter

The infinity symbol, that endless sideways figure of eight, is also known as the lemniscate. It represents harmony and balance. It is ancient, connecting us to great wisdom, the eternal, duality. It is found in many cultures and in science and mathematics, particularly associated with the number eight. But it is also a representation of the two sides of the brain, and this includes exercises to combine and balance our brains and find harmony in life, even to attract the right partner. It is not just humans who respond; bees and birds instinctively understand the power of a figure of eight symbol and make use of it in their worlds. 128pp, 191 x 146 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £9.99

THE GATE OF LIGHT by Lars Muhl

This book describes and explains an ancient method of healing, one which will allow you to shed ego, fear and blame and eventually connect with the Divine. In order to do this, attention needs to be drawn away from outer circumstances and directed toward the inner essence. Lars states that you only need an open mind and an open heart to benefit from his methods and to connect with source energy, regardless of whether you follow a religion or not. Lars includes his own experiences of loss and suffering throughout the book in order to demonstrate the healing forces that surround us all. It is beautifully written and gracefully sweeps you up into his story, allowing you to follow his guidance and learn from his lessons.

HEAL YOURSELF HEAL THE WORLD by Deborah King

This is one of those rare books that seems to cover everything. Sure, it’s touchy-feely and a bit “Californian” but it’s also inspiring and the sort of book you want to pick up and work all the way through for a total life transformation. It covers the chakras, energy fields and spiritual guides in a holistic system that the author calls LifeForce Energy Healing. The text is printed in different colours with illustrations everywhere and there are plenty of personal stories, which both inspire and also ground the text. If you are looking for an all-round spiritual self-transformation manual, this book is ideal. JAMES HOLLIS ON LIVING THE EXAMINED LIFE

I

offer this book containing the summation of decades of working with students, clients, analysands, and myself in the hope that it will be helpful to each reader in the conduct of his or her life and bring a greater sense of purpose and personal permission to be, in the end, who he or she is. All that sounds so simple, but in fact it is very difficult. For the last thirty years, I have had the privilege of traveling to four continents giving presentations and workshops and have flown well over a million miles to these scattered venues. As a result, I have witnessed what touches people, what energizes them, what reminds them of something they know but perhaps have forgotten, and finally, what challenges them to come back to their journey. Herein I summarize these very complex issues in a finite list of graspable points. Sometimes we need a list, sometimes to be reminded, and sometimes to be kicked in the butt. This book is that reminder, that kick in the butt. This book promises nothing easy. It asks that the reader be serious about looking at his or her life and taking responsibility for it. We are, after all, the only constant character in that long-running soap opera we call our life. Therefore, it might well be argued that we are somehow account- able for how it is turning out. This book contains twenty-one desiderata, the daily acknowledgment of which will change your life, make it more interesting, make it more nearly your own, and make possible the recovery of your journey. It is my surmise that you have not picked up this book idly or as a distraction. You have done so out of a nagging curiosity, a deep, abiding pain, an unresolved life problem. Moreover, you most likely want surcease of suffering, rapid improvement, and abiding change for the better. If someone tells you the truth—that you will likely be dealing with these issues most of your life that you will come back to them over and over in new venues, new relationships, new

Lessons in living for mid-life stages of life—you would likely move on quickly. But the truth is the truth, and as Jung pointed out, we seldom solve problems, but we can outgrow them. That is what this book is about, not solutions, but attitudes, behaviors, and disciplines that move us toward enlargement, toward enfolding our debilitating history into a journey more productive, more clearly our own. As I believe these ideas require reflection, percolation through the layers of our accumulated resistance

to change, I strongly recommend that the book not be read straight through, but a chapter a day. Only a disciplined reading allows the ideas to percolate to our soul. To that end, the chapters have been kept short and to the point. Reading one chapter per day allows greater absorption than surfing through the whole permits. It is my hope that this book will be a tool for each of us to recover respect for that which abides deeply within. As we do, we will not be spared disappointment or suffering, but we will know the depth and dignity of an authentic journey, of being a real player in our brief moment on this turning planet, and our life will become more interesting to us, taking us deeper than ever before. Only then are we on the journey of the soul. As the Danish theologian Kierkegaard observed: merchant mariners get their sailing orders in the safe harbor; men-o’- war open their instructions on the high seas. Whether you know it or not, you are on the high seas of the soul and have been so for a long time. It is time to open our instructions, set a new course, turn and tack into the wind, and sail onward, with the destination unfolding as we move. James Hollis, Washington, DC Excerpted from LIVING AN EXAMINED LIFE, by James Hollis, PhD. Sounds True, February 2018. Reprinted with permission.

LIVING AN EXAMINED LIFE by James Hollis

James Hollis is a Jungian analyst, who writes with a combination of deep learning and an easy conversational style. Throughout much of his career he has focused on the experience of growing older – the subtitle of this book is Wisdom for the Second Half of the Journey. Each of the 21 five or six page chapters teaches a separate lesson, meant to be read one per day. They include Choose the Path of Enlargement, Choose Meaning over Happiness and Construct a Mature Spirituality. The whole book is full of wise and humorous support and not platitudes, and reflects a life that has been lived deeply and fully. 160pp, 229 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £12.99

BOOK REVIEWS — Other Realities ANGELS AT MY FINGERTIPS by Lorna Byrne

We carried this title in hardback last year and now it’s in paperback. It’s full of stories of everyday encounters with the supernatural: meetings with angels, the visions and lessons that they grant her and the way they have an effect on her small rural community. For the first time Lorna reveals the role of the souls of our loved ones who may return from heaven briefly to help and guide us. It also contains an account of how Joe, her husband, who died young in Angels in My Hair, comes back to visit her. Sometimes the things she reveals are truly astounding, but she tells her tales at all times in a completely humble way. It’s encouraging and uplifting. 352pp, 231 x 130 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £8.99

TALKING TO HEAVEN MEDIUMSHIP CARDS by James Van Praagh

When seeking contact with departed friends or family it is usual to work with a clairvoyant. Now James Van Praagh draws on his years as a spiritual medium to place such contact directly into the hands of the individual. The 44 cards aim to open up a loving and healing conversation between those separated by death. Each card offers an answer to questions. Perhaps the simple phrase on the colourful illustration is enough to provide an answer, otherwise the accompanying booklet offers more words of comfort and explanation. The cards can also be used to have conversations with other heavenly beings. 140pp, 44 colour cards, 140 x 100 mm, Boxed Set, 2018, RRP £13.99

LLEWELLYN’S LITTLE BOOK OF SPIRIT ANIMALS by Melissa Alvarez

Many people feel drawn to a particular animal, as if it is guiding them. In her original book Animal Frequency Melissa Alvarez explored this in depth and this is a pocket gift version of the same material. Animals are spiritual beings and part of universal consciousness and they can deliver important messages. Each has its own vibrational energy, even an ant or a sea horse; in fact, they may appear in thoughts or in dreams and should not be ignored. This is an aid to learning how to recognise and connect with the energy of a wide range of animals, both wild and domesticated, and even mythical. 264pp, 166 x 126 mm, Hardback, 2018, £10.99

EARTH WARRIORS ORACLE by Alana Fairchild

A new world is being born

It’s another amazing oracle deck from Alana Fairchild and Blue Angel Publishing and it contains 44 cards (plus a perfect bound 216 page book) all in colour that show an array of stunning figures depicting Earth Warriors. Ranging from the Goddess of Teotihuacan to Viracocha and Pacha Karmaq, these are the guardians and way-showers for the new world that will take us all forward with them. All of them are (I think) from the American tradition – North, Central and South – and the style is intricate, colourful and slightly psychedelic, in the Mayan fashion. You can use this deck to tap into the universal tribal wisdom to discover your own Earth Warrior within. 216pp, 44 colour cards, 237 x 128 mm, Boxed Set, 2018, RRP £16.99

BOOK REVIEWS — Oracles THE ENCHANTED LENORMAND ORACLE by Caitlin Matthews

Many who take up Lenormand decks are amazed by how accurate they can be. This particular deck is a new interpretation of the classic oracle. It has been updated for the 21st century and contains three extra cards. Each card boasts a hand-painted design which is simple and immediate in order to feel more authentic to the user. The accompanying booklet is split into three parts; the first teaches you how to read the cards, the next explains the main themes and possible meanings, and the final part contains sample spreads and readings to help you expand your practice. Although clearly laid out and thoroughly explained (and absolutely beautiful), this deck is not ideal for complete beginners. It will however create a rich experience for those familiar with tarot or oracle decks.

A Guide to Starting a Cygnus Café

W

e know that we have many members who are interested in starting Cygnus Cafés in their community, and that they have questions, both about how to get started and also how they want their group to run. Below is a miniguide to running a Cygnus Café to give you a taste of what you can expect – if you would like to start your own Café please do get in touch. ❖ The starting point for setting up a group is the

purpose of a Cygnus Café, and that is creating a space for you to meet people of like mind in your own locality. Nowadays it is often the case that you might find you can only get so far by yourself using a book. Sometimes it can be a great help on your spiritual journey to share issues that feel unresolved, with others of like heart.

❖ Many groups take a little

while to gain momentum, and this is normal. We suggest you avoid the temptation of trying to find a perfect arrangement. ❖ Setting up for the

meeting we suggest that the host prepares the room in the most appropriate way, arranging the seating so that everyone has eye-to-eye contact. Meetings generally begin with everyone taking turns to say their name and where they are from and, if they wish, a mention about something they may want to talk about later. ❖ Many groups have found it

❖ Most of our groups run in what

very helpful to keep the level of the meeting at a higher level by setting the intention of the group to the highest good at the beginning of the meeting. So that, whatever happens, the highest good may come out of it.

we would call an unstructured way, they have no agenda and allow the magic of the moment to provide the topics spontaneously, depending on who wishes to share their recently experienced insights or share their current concerns of the heart.

❖ Gradually most groups begin

to observe how Cygnus Cafés can grow in depth as participants feel more comfortable and they can share their vulnerabilities and “soft spots”. This gives others the confidence to share their concerns or doubts.

❖ When getting down to

practicalities the first thing you need is a space, generally meetings are held in members’ homes or quiet rooms in cafés or community spaces. Any room hire costs etc. are shared by the participants on a donation basis. We advise avoiding noisy venues or spaces that have no door, as this helps a great deal. You need a safe space where you know you will not be interrupted. ❖ When thinking about when and how often to hold

your meetings, consider the needs of the group when deciding what is best for (most of ) you. Some groups choose mornings, others evenings, some even choose a weekend. Larger groups sometimes choose to have two meetings in a month, once in the evening and once in the morning, to match the different lifestyles. Most meeting last for around 2 hours and our advice is to stick to the same day every month, week or fortnight to allow people to organise their diaries.

We love hearing from our members and finding out what you are up to at your café meetings. Please send your comments, thoughts and updates to editor@cygnus-books.co.uk so that we can include them on this page.

❖ For meeting support you can contact Vicky Hartley at Cygnus on

Health — BOOK REVIEWS THE KEFIR SOLUTION by Shann Nix Jones

This new book by the author of Secrets From Chuckling Goat turns to the gut-brain axis, which we have already seen highlighted in Giulia Enders’ book Gut. Basically there is more and more evidence that gut disorders such as IBS have a huge effect on mental health and can cause anxiety and depression. So now she lays out a whole wealth of practical advice on natural ways of deploying nutritional remedies to combat these issues. Of course kefir lies at the heart of it – but it’s not the only component and the book is full of recipes, suggestions and insights that are backed up by extensive scientific research, all presented with Shann’s trademark warmth.

HUNGRY FOR MORE by Mel Wells

It’s written in a positive and breezy style that’s encouraging and energising. It’s a wonderful primer in how best to deploy feminine energy. 272pp, 216 x 135 mm, Paperback, 2018, £12.99

Sufferers of chronic pelvic pain – pelvic floor dysfunction, prostatis or pudenda neuralgia – may find relief with the help of this best-selling book. David Wise searched for relief from his own pelvic pain for decades, finally chancing on a resolution after years of research and self-experimentation. Together with Stanford University Urologist, Dr Rodney Anderson, he developed a programme called the Wise Anderson Protocol. They discovered that pelvic floor pain is caused by a cycle of anxiety related pelvic muscle tension, irritated tissue and pain taking on a life of its own. Their system breaks the cycle using internal and external physiotherapy, and meditation, in a selftreatment programme that has aided many in their search for pain relief. 400pp, 228 x 154 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £14.99

THE MOOD CARDS BY ANREA HARRN

T

he Mood Cards enable deep and meaningful conversations within a structured framework. The cards are based on cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness and positive psychology. They provide a combination approach to positive mental health and well-being – an opportunity to identify with moods and emotions, and a chance to think things through with guided questions for self-exploration, followed by an affirmation for positive thinking. Furthermore the colours on the cards reflect the colours of the chakras, allowing a connection with the area in the body where the emotion is felt, or where additional strength is needed. Being mindfully self-aware, and then using cognition and logic to gain understanding, is an effective way to bring about healing and positive change. Sitting with your feelings in a mindful way allows you to fully experience the best and the worst of how you might feel. This process is transformational. Affirmations, on the other hand, are powerful thoughts that can plant seeds of change. Our thoughts can become our realities – and we get to choose them.

Psychology — BOOK REVIEWS POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY FOR OVERCOMING DEPRESSION by Miriam Akhtar

When it comes to depression, often doctors will treat the symptoms with medication rather than investigating the underlying reasons. This book takes a different approach to depression, and helps the reader focus instead on the positive aspects of their life, which helps SAVE to reduce negative emotions and feelings. 40% This positive approach, coupled with scientifically-grounded practices, work together to act as a natural antidepressant. Each chapter focuses on a specific tool to help conquer depression and shows how to explore and engage with that tool. Not all will feel 100% comfortable for the reader, as we are all different, but you can simply focus on those that do. This is a well-written, practical and informative guidebook which encourages readers that there is a way out.

SCIENCE AND SPIRITUAL PRACTICES by Rupert Sheldrake

A new book from Rupert Sheldrake is always an event, as he writes readable books which are heavy on scientific research but which deal sympathetically with the spiritual aspect of life. Many studies have shown that spiritual practices generally make people happier and healthier and here he looks at seven of them: meditation, gratitude, connecting with nature, relating to plants, rituals, singing and chanting, and pilgrimage. He outlines what might happen if we follow these practices, and suggests how we can develop our own programmes. It’s an ideal book for anyone who believes that, in the drive towards radical secularism, something precious has been left behind. 256pp, 199 x 155 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £9.99

The author quotes D H Lawrence who wrote ‘we are bleeding at the roots’ because we are cut off from nature and the source of life. Sharon says Western women have lost control of their stories. She explores the inspiration that powerful females provide, both in ancient times and mythology and today through contemporary communication such as blogging. The feminine is creative, even if that creativity is buried. It is part of the natural power to which each woman can reconnect. For women who feel separated from their true feminine self this is a rallying cry to rediscover those ancient roots and be part of the life force again. 400pp, 218 x 141 mm, Paperback, 2016, RRP £10.99

MIND TO MATTER BY DAWSON CHURCH

T

houghts become things. This is manifestly true. I am sitting on a chair right now. It began as a thought in someone’s mind – every detail of it. The frame, the fabric, the curves, the color. Thoughts become things. This is manifestly untrue. I will never be a quarterback for the National Football League, no matter how earnestly I think about it. I will never be 16 years old again. I will never pilot the starship Enterprise. Between the ways in which thoughts become things and the ways in which thoughts can never become things there is a wide middle ground. This book explores that middle ground. Why? We want to be able to create the outermost limits of our thought, expanding our lives to the limits of our potential. We want to be as happy, healthy, wealthy, wise, fulfilled, creative, and loved as possible. We also don’t want to chase pipe dreams, thoughts that are never going to become things. When we apply the rigorous standards of science to the inquiry, that middle ground turns out to be enormous. Research shows us that with thought, used deliberately, we can create things beyond the ordinary.

16

THE SCIENTIST VERSUS THE MYSTIC

Science and metaphysics are generally considered to be polar opposites, Science is experimental, practical, rigorous, empirical, materialistic, objective, and intellectual. Metaphysics is spiritual, experiential, abstract, mystical, ephemeral, internal, irreplicable, imprecise, subjective, otherworldly, impractical, and impossible to prove. Science studies the world of matter while metaphysics seeks to transcend it. I have never perceived science and metaphysics as separate and have delighted in being both a mystic and a scientific researcher. When I bring the rigor of science to the question of consciousness, each illuminates the other.

This book examines the science behind the creative powers of the mind. It reviews the studies that show, step-by-step, exactly how our minds create material form. As each piece of the puzzle falls into place, the science turns out to be even more astonishing than the metaphysics. This book is also full of case histories – real, up close, authentic personal accounts of people who had an experience of mind-into-matter. Drawn from the worlds of medicine, psychology, sports, business, and scientific discovery, these stories run the gamut from profound to inspiring to heartwrenching. They show us that thoughts can become things in ways that stretch the fabric of our space-time reality.

THE CHAIN OF EVIDENCE FROM MIND TO MATTER

[…] I read all or part of more than a thousand scientific studies per year. I started to see a pattern. There are multiple links in the chain between thought and thing, and I realized that science could explain many of them. I wondered if anyone had ever connected all the dots to see just how strong the evidence was. Where was the chain strongest, and where were links missing? If I were to treat the idea of mind as a scientific rather than a metaphysical hypothesis, would it hold up? I began seeking out research that addressed this question and interviewing some of the brightest minds in the field. From the introduction to Mind To Matter by Dawson Church, Hay House, 2018. It’s a weighty hardback that tackles the big issues where science meets consciousness, and it includes a foreword by the author of the first book, Dr Joe Dispenza. It’s a comprehensive and entertaining survey of all the science around the concept that “thoughts become things”. This is a cliché but on the other hand if it is a genuine reality there are huge possibilities for all of us to make the world a much better place. 360pp, 236 x 164 mm, Hardback, 2018, RRP £20.00

Metaphysics Meets Science

The idea that thoughts are things has become a meme in popular culture. It’s held as a firm proposition in metaphysics, and some spiritual teachers ascribe infinite powers to the mind. Yet there are clearly limits to human creative abilities; I cannot manifest an aircraft carrier simply by thinking about one. I cannot become Indonesian, jump over Mount Everest, or turn lead into gold. New discoveries in epigenetics, neuroscience, electromagnetism, psychology, cymatics, public health, and quantum physics, however, are showing that thoughts can be profoundly creative. The page or device on which you now read these words began as a thought. So did democracy, the bikini, space travel, immunization, money, the four-minute mile, and the assembly line.

FREEDOM FROM THE KNOWN by J. Krishnamurti

WHEN SPIRIT LEAPS by Bonnie L Greenwell

This wonderful rich sprawling book covers so much in its 296 pages and it’s difficult to know where to begin. David Lorimer calls it “a transformational tour de force” and it’s full of stories and lessons that have come out of Mick’s life and training in different healing modalities since the spiritual emergency he underwent in 1986. It’s academically grounded but easy to read, and more than anything it’s an encouragement on the path, with many accounts of healing and transformation that will give us hope and guide us. It’s a radical manifesto for soulful and creative living. ❖ Code: 280334 ❖ Non-Member Price: £15.54 ❖ Member: £13.99

The late Alan Watts was a leading guide for many seekers and some of his articles published and broadcast in the 1950s are collected here, together with earlier thoughts from the 1930s. He examines Western spirituality in the light of Zen and Asian thought, particularly Buddhist influences and the Tao. He also looks at the mystical roots of Christianity, all in a very readable style. Seekers of truth will be challenged by the depth of his philosophical thought, little bombs of great wisdom are thrown into the light prose style of the work of this master teacher. In his day he had a large following, particularly in California, and his words still hold power and significance for today’s reader. ❖ Code: 280338 ❖ Non-Member Price: £6.65 ❖ Member: £5.99

Born of the turbulent, anti-establishment Sixties, Krishnamurti’s writings are still relevant today, possibly more so with all the change needed in the world right now. Freedom From The Known serves as an inspiring introduction to his famous teachings - teachings that influenced and inspired many of the leading spiritual figures today: Eckhart Tolle, Joseph Campbell, Alan Watts and Deepak Chopra. This is a little book with a big impact, distilling Krishnamurti’s key ideas on love, fear, consciousness and death. He challenges us to strip away our preconceptions about everything we know, to shake off fear and reveal our true nature. To change ourselves, so we can then change society and the world in which we find ourselves. 144pp, 197 x 127 mm, Paperback, 1997, RRP £7.99

A classic collection of brief excerpts from one of the great spiritual teachers of the 20th century. Mini sized, it slips easily into a bag or pocket as something to keep with you and dip into at odd moments. A constant companion, providing profound and relevant teachings on meditation. He SAVE tells us ‘all effort to meditate is the denial 33% of meditation’ and many of the pieces explain this more deeply. The words are challenging, one paragraph is enough to set you off on a personal exploration of your own truth. This is a little book for thinkers which guides us beyond thought to total freedom. ❖ Code: 280337 ❖ Non-Member Price: £6.65 ❖ Member: £5.99

The books we feature cover a wide spectrum, but much can be gained from both the philosophical and the anecdotal. This book has a lot of words and very few stories, but it is readable and clear and will give you a profound insight into consciousness and how it works. In his glowing foreword, Deepak Chopra writes, “I’ve gained deeper understanding listening to Rupert Spira than I have from any other exponent of modern spirituality”. It’s a great book – inspired by the Direct Path taught by Atmananda Krishna Menon and the Tantric tradition of Kashmir Shaivism – that will gently blow your mind and help you to articulate for yourself your own personal spiritual experiences. ❖ Code: 280302 ❖ Non-Member Price: £13.32 ❖ Member: £11.99

Today there are more and more explorations being made into Spiritual Emergency, and Cygnus has done well already with the books of Catherine Lucas. This new account is based on 30 years of case studies and personal experiences and it provides a highly readable and above all encouraging account of those scary moments of breakthrough. Bonnie discusses all the various facets of such alterations in consciousness, such as Kundalini, drugs or shamanic work. This will be both useful and reassuring to people in beleagured positions. It includes a foreword by Adyashanti, one of the most important teachers of our times. 224pp, 230 x 155 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £13.99

Acclaimed teacher and writer Natalie Goldberg developed cancer in her mid-sixties and her partner did too a few months later. This is Natalie’s memoir about their approach to treatment, how to negotiate relationships under pressure and how her Zen practice helped her get through. Natalie wrote the classic Writing Down the Bones, and her style is luminous and conversational. This is not about the details of cancer treatment but about confronting mortality and trying to live more fully in the moment. Indeed she takes a conventional approach to treatment, but her spirit is brave and anything but conventional. 192pp, 177 x 128 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £13.99

LET THE WHOLE THUNDERING WORLD COME HOME by Natalie Goldberg

After Walking Home, her previous memoir about her pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella, this bestselling and beloved Hay House author tells more stories about her new life after divorce, this time based in Paris. After her pilgrimage she thought SAVE all would be ok with her husband but that 45% proved not to be the case, so she and her daughter decided to move to Paris. Her account is full of funny stories, great observations about the city and profound spiritual insights. As ever with Sonia, her words are profoundly inspiring, regarding both living the spiritual life and thriving after crushing disappointment. ❖ Code: 280319 ❖ Non-Member Price: £12.21 ❖ Member: £10.99

New perspectives — BOOK REVIEWS HOW SOON IS NOW? by Daniel Pinchbeck

This book – now in paperback – won’t suit you if you like things gentle and comforting. Buy it though if you want SAVE someone to help you articulate the 30% ways in which the world is being carelessly exploited but who will also give you crystal-clear suggestions on how you can make things better. It’s liberating and vital. Daniel Pinchbeck is a bestselling author, social activist and cultural entrepreneur. As author John Perkins says, his life has been like “the hero’s journey”: he has travelled, he has had amazing encounters and he has met the people who count. If anyone can give the answers, he can. This is a constructive path away from despair and impotence, and into activism and planetary healing.

THE ORIGINAL I CHING ORACLE by Rudolf Ritsema and Shantena Augusto Sabbadini

This is an updated edition, with a new introduction, of the Eranos I Ching, which – inspired by Jung – takes a unique approach to the oracle, considering it an exploration of potential synchronicities, rather than assuming it can predict the future. It’s as if consulting it then evokes a dream about a specific situation, so in the end responsibility for the interpretation rests firmly with the consultant. It’s big (864 pages), printed in colour and full of the latest scholarship. It’s probably not good as a starter I Ching, but it would be invaluable for anyone who wants to explore the depths of this foundational cultural work. 864pp, 235 x 156 mm, Paperback, 2018, £19.99

Humans and nature have a spiritual bond which can bring deep healing for individuals and the planet. Here a biologist uses science and spirituality to explore how plants keep us healthy by communicating directly with the immune system and unconscious. This theory has been around for centuries but has only recently become the object of scientific research. Nature, such as forests and waterways, can have a profound influence on mental health, while indoors even a house plant can transform a home or workplace. For gardeners there are useful tips on how to make your outdoor space a more powerfully healing environment. 264pp, 228 x 153 mm, Paperback, 2018, £14.99

This full-colour, large-format book guides us through the classics of Renaissance art discussing the more subtle and implied aspects of the chosen paintings, sculptures and buildings. Aspects analyzed include sacred geometry, men and angels and light and shade; the works of art studied include Boticelli’s Birth of Venus, Michelangelo’s David and the Palazzo Medici. Many of the works – usually to be found in Italy or London – will inspire you to go and visit them and the author’s words give you the tools to understand these enigmatic images a bit better. Anyway, the colour photos – including close-up details – are beautiful and more than enough to keep you occupied until you see the works in the flesh. 224pp, 234 x 178 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £18.99

A FAIRY TREASURY by Jacky Newcomb and Alicen Geddes

THE CYGNUS KEY by Andrew Collins

This is a rich compendium to dip into about all things fae/faery/fairy. It does cover the heavier side of the elemental world but for the most part it’s much more bright, colourful and “in the light” than the recent Morgan Daimler title we reviewed. However it’s still full of wisdom, folklore, magic and wonder and is immensely suitable for inspiring the fairy beginner or anyone who wants an introduction to all the enchanted aspects of life. So it includes advice on photographing fairies, on making a fairy coverlet and on the evidence of fairies in all the major religions.

This book is a departure from what we normally review and include here. However it does describe the massive influence of the Cygnus constellation upon ancient cultures, and all of us are evidence that Cygnus – whatever it might be – still SAVE exerts an influence even today. Andrew 45% Collins is a leading British researcher into Gobekli Tepi, the site in Turkey that was designed more than 11,000 years ago. It is aligned on Cygnus, in the same way the Pyramids at Giza are aligned on the three main Cygnus stars…did one civilization lead to the other? And where did this ancient veneration of Cygnus come from?

INSTANT PRESENCE by Enza Vita

This book is direct, refreshing and wonderful. In a time when the “spirituality” market is saturated, Enza delivers this refreshing pearl of wisdom that’s permeated with honesty. She avoids labeling this approach, as she believes that “this” cannot be put in a box. It can be called Zen or Advaita…or none of it…or all of it! This does not really matter, because it has to be purely based on experience. One of Enza’s messages in this book is that this is not just another belief system to substitute for what we already have. Rather it’s a way to step back from all belief and “see”. This teaching is priceless and it is conveyed from a position of humility and experience at the same time. 208pp, 216 x 135 mm, Paperback, 2017, RRP £10.99

The Gel An essential for everyone’s health and beauty By Jayne Beaumont

The Gel is one of those rare health and beauty secrets that have been passed by ‘word of mouth’ since its inception in the 1980’s. It is a product of Eastern wisdom and Western science with its magical mix of ingredients that work wonders on the skin whether repairing scar tissue, burns and bruising or simply improving the skin’s condition and tone. Developed by an American health practitioner, Beth Gagnon in her home in Los Angeles after becoming aware of the findings of research completed in 1975 by a Chinese doctor in a Beijing hospital who wanted to understand how acupuncture worked. He found that acupuncture triggered the activity of the enzyme, Acetyl cholinesterase, heightening ‘aliveness’ in the nervous system. He then looked for a natural substance to create the same effect and he found it in Caesium salts. Little did he know it would have such powerful implications for healing and rejuvenating skin tissue! Beth combined these findings with traditional homeopathy to make

his discovery even more powerful and The Gel was developed. In the mid 80’s Beth moved to London and soon after Leslie Kenton, the then Beauty Editor of Harpers Queen and latterly a health guru and writer, discovered The Gel and spread the word. Thirty years later, it has a long and devoted client list including many well-known personalities here and around the world. There are many extraordinary testimonials on the Gagnon Essentials’ website written by individual users as well as doctors and other health practitioners. I have been using this product for years as well as sharing it with my friends and family and can personally vouch for its healing properties. Along with many other users, I think The Gel should be in every household’s medical cabinet and amongst the daily creams of everyone who cares about their skin. The Gel comes in two sizes: a 60ml glass jar for £35 and a 125ml plastic bottle for £67 plus postage. www.gagnonessentials.com or 020 7224 2332 to place an order.
