EDITOR’S LETTER
Beacons of Light
W
elcome to the winter edition of the Cygnus Review. The light might be slowly dwindling, but it always comes back in a bright blaze at the turn of the year. Hope is always there and things will always get better. First of all there are a couple of housekeeping issues. For the last magazine we included both the members’ and the non-members’ prices with the book reviews, and we are going to continue with this. We intended to stress the value of membership, to encourage people who have paid the extra money to take the 10% they are entitled to. Our covering letter unfortunately made it sound like there was yet another 10% available on top of the lower price in the magazine: unfortunately that’s not true and we are sorry it looked that way. There’s just that lower printed price, which already includes the 10%. We are sorry also when books are unavailable for a period of time. There have been some major examples of this in recent weeks, and before Christmas a year ago as well. These situations occur when books have to come over from the States and there aren’t enough copies ordered or the supply is disrupted. Ironically this
2
usually happens when the book is popular with the membership and the distributor or importer has been caught unawares. Again we are truly sorry for the inconvenience. We are doing our best, and thank you for your patience. I am always humbled by how tolerant you are. It’s been a demanding year. Personally I have found that a lot of certainty, solidity even, has fallen away. I know it’s good not to be in automatic all the time, but it can also be tiring to be endlessly groping your way and constantly assessing situations. I listen as closely as I can, have gratitude for all the great things in my life and trust that all shall be well. A couple of memorable things: On my travels I have had the chance to pay my respects to a couple of heroes. William Blake – poet, artist and prophet – was buried in obscurity in the nonconformist graveyard of Bunhill Fields in London nearly 200 years ago. There was a marker stone for him and his wife, but that was never meant to mark the precise spot where they were laid to rest. In recent years though his supporters have worked out that location, and this summer a beautiful new stone was positioned above his true resting place.
The spirit of this great bard is being revived. He is not of King Arthur’s magnitude, but he still somehow represents a brave and visionary spirit for these islands, and it’s gratifying to think of this new memorial marking an inspirational light that shines out from the heart of London. I also had reason to go to Switzerland for a few days and I seized the opportunity to go to Carl Gustav Jung’s family home in Küsnacht, which has recently been opened as a museum. Over the front door is Jung’s famous motto (see right): VOCATUS ATQUE NON VOCATUS DEUS ADERIT. “God is present, whether summoned or not.” The house and garden seem quite ordinary at first. The tour begins on the ground floor and then takes you upstairs and into the library. More than fifty years after his death this room still reeks of pipe tobacco, and it feels like he is there. At that moment the house becomes more than just a museum. There’s the desk at which he wrote, and the walls are lined with volumes of religious, esoteric and psychological works. Most wonderful of all are all the old alchemical texts, in original editions, some from the seventeenth century: they might be the only copies in existence of these fruits of the alchemists’ patient striving in their lonely laboratories. The present moment seems to concertina, and the energy becomes heightened and intense. The space turns into a crossroads in history. After that we were taken to the waiting room for Jung’s patients, which had a bust of Voltaire – the great sceptic – on top of the bookcase. Finally we entered Jung’s study, which was also his consulting room. This is a darker room, with stained glass in the window, which would have shone an almost sacred light on the patient sitting opposite, whenever the sun streamed in. There is also to one side the lectern where Jung probably stood to create the legendary Red Book containing his dreams and visions, and on the other side an alcove with an image of Christ from the Turin Shroud. If Voltaire was the presiding spirit before, this is a different kind of

place – a place for God (or whatever term you want to give to the Eternal) to be present, whether summoned or not. Places like these can be profoundly inspiring. Time slips away and we can connect to the potency and power of those human beings who have changed the world. Of course they are no longer physically present, but there is something there… The desk of Emma Rauschenbach Jung, his wife, has been moved from one of the rooms upstairs into the living room on the ground floor. She brought into the marriage the money that enabled her husband to carry on with his work. She also tolerated his unpredictable and sometimes wayward behaviour. Finally she became an analyst and author in her own right: a healer of great insight. The museum pays constant tribute to her, through photographs and mementos, and the symbolic act of bringing down her desk reminds us that Jung’s heritage has itself grown stronger because of the way
male and female energies were blended, especially in these very rooms where Emma held the household together. Ultimately, I think her contribution is as great as his. Likewise the original marker stone in Bunhill Fields pays tribute to Catherine, William Blake’s wife, who was unfailingly loyal and supportive to him, and helped him so much in his career. It is not “he did this” and “she did that” – it’s what they achieved together, and thus bequeathed to us, that counts. We appreciate the legacy of these men and women, working in unison. Whenever we work together in the cause of the greater good, something greater is generated than the mere sum of two, three or more human beings. Finally, as I write this, a bright light has just left the world when Father Thomas Keating, the Cistercian monk, passed away at the age of 95. He helped bring into being Centering Prayer, a Christian approach to contemplative prayer based on the mystical classic The Cloud of Unknowing. He also did much to encourage understanding and brotherhood between religions through his friendship and work with another great spiritual figure, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. The work of these people who bridge divisions needs to be remembered in times like these when there is so much mistrust and hatred between different groups of human beings. We are all on the same path, and we have to hold this in mind, now more than ever. Adam
‘We are all on the same path, and we have to hold this in mind, now more than ever.’
WALKING EACH OTHER HOME by Ram Dass and Mirabai Bush
This is the Ram Dass book many of us have been waiting for. The legendary teacher and survivor from the sixties, who has been an inspiration to the spiritual movement for decades, offers the best of his advice on reaching the end of life. This is a subject he has immense experience with – he has been supporting and comforting the sick and dying for fifty years, plus at 84 he is inevitably reaching the end of this incarnation. He had a serious stroke 20 years ago but that has barely dimmed his luminous passion, and here has the help of his old friend and collaborator Mirabai Bush to dialogue with him and draw out his stories. I make no bones about my love and deepest appreciation for Ram Dass, and this is his crowning achievement. 224pp, 213 x 210 mm, Hardback, 2018, RRP £22.00

THE GODDESS IS A TORCHLIGHT FOR OUR TIMES BY SOPHIE BASHFORD “The Goddesses are embodiments of universal feminine consciousness who have a longing – and a sacred mandate – to connect with humanity.” YOU ARE A GODDESS
T
wenty years ago, I had no conception of ‘the Goddess’ beyond what I knew from stories, myths, legends and art. If you had told me then – in my twenties – that I would become the author of a book called You Are a Goddess, an intuitive channel for the goddess, and a creator of goddess-centred retreats – I would have laughed in disbelief. I didn’t experience a celestial vision of the Goddess, telling me in dulcet, ethereal tones that I was to become a spiritual mouthpiece for the Divine Feminine. I didn’t hear a ‘spiritual calling’ from the Goddess instructing me to leave one life and begin another overnight. In truth, I began only to connect with the powers of the sacred feminine realm through actual life experience – as a woman, living an ordinary life in the modern world. The entrance of the Goddess into my earthly existence began with its breakdown. As a small child who had lost her mother in very early childhood, as I entered my young adult life I found that it was starting to unravel. Emotionally, I was at a tipping point, having held in vast quotas of grief for years. Mentally, I felt lost as I had just left university in the first term. Physically, I was exhausted and struggling with anxiety. And spiritually – I had no clue how to open up to my divine Self. This is where the Goddess entered my life. Briefly, with the pregnancy of my first daughter I was plunged into deep healing of my emotions, the experience of which began opening up my psychic and spiritual channels to a life-force energy that had been dormant within my Soul for centuries. Through synchronicity and Divine Hand, I was thrown headlong into a spiritual awakening to my ancient links to the Goddess. It often felt like
4
You are a Goddess chaos, dissolution, and wilderness. Many aspects of my physical life seemed to topple over like dominoes: I eventually came to recognise this as the effect of the fierce Hindu Goddess of Transformation, Kali. Over time, I formed an intuitive link with numerous Goddesses, and they showed me how women were living examples and embodiments of their consciousness. They revealed how, in our patriarchal-dominant cultures, we have been conditioned out of understanding how the Feminine Spirit works through us – and importantly, how this energy can support and guide us. My personal and professional experience has shown me that currently women are hungry for the
spiritual feminine, and recognize that this energy has something nourishing to give them. Many women sense that something vital is hidden or locked up within their energy systems – the feminine essence – and that this essence has long been marginalized and suppressed on our planet. We are seeing this resurgence in interest for the Goddess everywhere, as women instinctively yearn to be more in touch with ‘feminine’ qualities and spirituality, for example: trusting their deep intuition, recognizing the loving voice of their heart, allowing natural cycles of life to unfold, listening to innate body wisdom, prizing nurturing, healing energy and the health of relationships, looking after their sensitivity and valuing the wisdom of emotions. With intuitively channelled messages, guided meditations and unique teachings, You Are a Goddess leads the reader on a stirring journey of self-discovery. Sharing candid stories of my own evolving relationship with Goddess consciousness, I connect readers with each Goddess in turn, helping to ignite their spiritual growth, uncover feminine healing gifts and underpin self-healing, positive change and empowerment. The Goddess has returned with all the tools that women need to heal, awaken and transform – and bring their much-needed ancient feminine wisdom into the everyday. YOU ARE A GODDESS by Sophie Bashford
This is a wonderful book. Around 20 years ago, Sophie awakened into Goddess consciousness and now she takes us on a journey to meet nine Goddess archetypes, including Kali, Isis and Mary Magdalene. Of course this book is aimed at women, but Goddess energy is available to men as well. It’s a fierce and powerful energy, but it’s also kind and deeply thoughtful. Her account includes channelled messages, guided meditations and moving personal stories. Ultimately it encourages you to see the Goddess inside you and to bring that energy to the surface, in order to heal yourself and heal the planet. 288pp, 220 x 140 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £12.99

A practice that dates back thousands of years via knowledge passed down from master to master. These sacred oils have special energies. Some you may know: Rose, Patchouli. Others you may not: Opoponax, Ravensara. All have powerful properties that work on a light body and soul level, not just the physical. Felicity Warner’s book takes us on a healing journey that starts back in Egypt and Babylon, where these 20 sacred oils were worshipped for their esoteric properties, and brings them into the present day detailing how they can empower our path to enlightenment. 272pp, 177 x 127 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £10.99

This handbook covers all the self-help tools that Alison used to cope with and recover from breast cancer. She lives in the UK so the book is usefully tuned into the medical experience in this country. I can imagine that having a book like this would be a huge confidence booster. It’s beautifully written and also full of all the latest medical research. It’s also full of spiritual approaches to the illness but it doesn’t disregard conventional medicine in the slightest. PIERRE PRADERVAND ON FINDING BLESSINGS
A
dear friend of mine decided when he was a young man to travel around the world. He ended up one day in a Buddhist monastery in Thailand, not knowing how long he would stay. (He finally stayed there 2 ½ years). At 3 a.m. every morning, one of the monks had to go and ring a huge gong on a neighbouring hill, and very early in his stay the abbot asked Mark to ring the bell early in the morning. The first days Mark got up in a bad mood, rebelling against this new duty. But very early on he realized he had the choice regarding his thoughts, hence regarding the spirit in which he would perform his task. So on this new day he got up in a good mood, went up the hill humming, and really applied himself to sending blessings all around as he rang the gong. On returning to the monastery, he saw a lone monk in the courtyard who came up to him and said: “Mark, what did you do differently today? The gong had another sound.” The most important thing to undertake on the planet is raising world consciousness, because absolutely everything in life and in the world today depends on our level of consciousness. So one of the greatest gifts we can make to the world is the gift of the quality of our thoughts. Some time ago, I was at my desk in Geneva and received a phone call. An unknown voice said to me, in English with a very strong Indian accent, “This is the Apple-Windows office in London, and we are phoning you because you are having problems with your computer, which is slow…” and on and on. (Such an office of course does not exist.) And suddenly, I saw his mouse moving around on my screen. After the incident, my webmaster told me I must have given him access to my screen, but everything went so fast I could hardly follow. (I need to explain here that I am a paleoNeanderthal computer caveman.) After 25 minutes of his explanations, his deleting this and that, I started feeling really uneasy and suddenly he said, “Well, that will be $150”. I protested
Blessing – one of the greatest gifts that he had never ever spoken of a payment, but he said something like “You know nowadays all services are paid. If you have a bank card, you can pay immediately”. Which I did. He said goodbye and I jumped on my phone and called my webmaster who replied, “Pierre, you have been a victim of THE classical hoax. Cut your internet contact and cancel your bankcard immediately. I will have to change your whole system”. All in all, it cost me close to £360. In the very second I realized I had
been hoodwinked, I started blessing the man in question and did so for weeks. I felt deep compassion for him, knowing he could never find true happiness cheating people all round the planet eight hours a day. In addition to that, instead of feeling angry and resentful and hence pulling the level of world consciousness down, I was I able to instantly forgive and bless him, and thus stay totally at peace, while helping raise world consciousness. Blessing people and situations everywhere is one of the greatest gifts one can make to the world - not to mention oneself. It is the key to constant serenity, because it enables immediate forgiveness in all situations. As the great American healer and mystic Joel Goldsmith said in the last century, “No one can enter my consciousness who needs to be forgiven, for I have already forgiven him seventy times seven”. My just published book, 365 Blessings to Heal Myself and the World, contains one blessing for each day of the year on every topic imaginable, from street children to bees, from Mother Earth to making love, from those in various desperate straits to loving oneself better. And on the website www.gentleartofblessing. org you will find numerous stories of healings of all sorts, including the healing of deep depression, and especially of human relations. So, friend, why not grant yourself – and the world – the gift of heart-felt, meaningful blessings?
365 BLESSINGS TO HEAL MYSELF AND THE WORLD by Pierre Pradervand Many people fell in love with the The Gentle Art of Blessing which showed the way to overwhelming joy. From his personal experience of how blessing can transform negative state of mind, which produced the original best seller, the author now moves on. He includes blessings from other sources such as Native American and Celtic to provide a different way of experiencing blessing for every day of the year. There are blessings for child soldiers, substance abusers, violence in homes. Blessings for love’s protection, a new home, perseverance. Whatever is important today can be healed with blessing and here is a comprehensive guide to help. 352pp, 216 x 142 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £14.99

THE FUTURE OF SPIRITUALITY AND RELIGION BY WILLIAM BLOOM
I
am upbeat about the future of religion and spirituality. But how can I say that in the midst of all the terrible vulgar stuff happening in today’s politics and culture? This optimism is not just wishful thinking. It is based in clearly visible markers that we can all see if we take the long view spanning many centuries. Remember that nothing is fixed. A cosmic reality is that everything is in flux, always changing. A few thousand years ago for example the global religions of Christianity, Buddhism or Islam did not exist. There is no cosmic law that says they will continue to exist. Things change. With religion these changes always reflect the culture and society of their times. No matter how pure the original intentions, the reality is that the organisational and cultural form of the world religions reflects the patriarchal structure of an army or imperial government. At the top is the Emperor or chief priest. Then the officers or clergy. At the bottom are the foot soldiers or the congregation, the plebs. Very few women in the top ranks and people with disabilities are invisible. In our time we can see this patriarchal structure being dismantled. The fabric of religious organisation is transforming. Women priests are one example. The huge growth in people developing their own spiritual practices – meditation, dance, pilgrimage and so on – is another. Equally important, there has been a worldwide growth in psychology and counselling skills. Talk therapy as an accepted part of mainstream society was unknown a hundred years ago. Today psychology is obviously central, for instance, in early years care, education and health. The best thing about the growth of psychology is that as a species we are learning to understand and self-manage ourselves in a more autonomous and mature way. We no longer give our power away to the first guru or fundamentalist belief that takes our fancy. At the same time there is substantial research from the World Values Survey that, as people are more educated and their lives become less focused on survival, they then adopt a more
together to provide us with an even stronger sense of right and wrong. Do not kill. Do no harm. Be charitable. We honour the Golden Rule of do unto others... in all religions. Our ethical inspiration from the world religions is deepened. DEEP GREEN ECOLOGY Our generation is the first clearly to articulate, assert and practice the moral imperatives of a deep green care for all of nature and for sustainability.
We can be optimistic inclusive and diverse approach to spirituality. This is all heart-warming news as it results in a reduction in fundamentalism and religious conflict. Then we have one of the greatest gifts of all – the development of a new and powerful set of ethics. As a spokesperson for the new spirituality I have often met the criticism that we have no roots and no ethics. We are, comes the accusation, lost in a soup of relativism with no clear guidelines. The reality though is that we have a wonderfully deep and strong morality. Let me list the precious elements. MULTIFAITH CONCORD Instead of putting the world faiths in competition with each other, we plait the ethics of the world religions
LOVE AND AFFECTION We have the crucial wisdom from developmental psychology that everyone – babies, children, teenagers, adults – need love and affection to develop healthily and to sustain a civilised society. Love and affection are not sentimental affectations but fundamental ethical requirements. METAPHYSICALLY LITERATE – NO BAD VIBES And we are also seeing the development of a scientific understanding of metaphysics and subtle energies. We have to watch out for and self-manage our mood and vibration lest it spill over and harm others. Good vibes are needed. All of these pioneering realities have been seeded in our time. Look forward a thousand years and imagine how beautifully this can all develop. Things may seem difficult right now and we need always to campaign for a better world. But be confident that in the fullness of time things are getting better and all will be well. williambloom.com

BOOK REVIEWS — Plant Consciousness and Shamanism THE BOOK OF CEREMONY by Sandra Ingerman
In the rush of modern living, ceremonies have lost significance for many people. Events from weddings to a walk in the woods may have become superficial because we no longer see the importance of invoking the sacred in everyday life. But recovering those deeper meanings through the discipline and order of ceremony can bring transformation and healing. Ceremonies can happen alone with nature or in groups that generate a field of energy where magic is created. As a shamanic practitioner Sandra Ingerman loves performing ceremonies, creating sacred space and invoking positive intention. This is a guide for those already practising shamanic ceremonies but also for those who wish to step onto the path of healing and blessing work. 216pp, 229 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £15.99

THE HEART OF THE SHAMAN by Alberto Villoldo
This is an interesting book. It’s a hardback and it’s not big and at first I thought, well, what’s actually going to be in here? But there’s something about it – it doesn’t try to be very practical but underneath it all it’s tremendously inspirational, and a manifesto for a different kind of living, where you live with an unconditional dedication to all life. The stories are well-chosen and succinct, but the principles outlined in the book are also general. Thus you can be inspired by the same principles that guide the shamanic religions of America but you can also use them in your own spiritual practice. It’s generous and humane – I like it.
LABYRINTH by Tony Christie
This tells you all you need to know about the labyrinth from an esoteric point of view: why they were placed in the ground, how to approach your experience in the labyrinth and how to create your own version. Labyrinths appear on hills, in cathedrals and in country gardens, their origins lost in the mists of time. They must have been important once and here you learn multiple approaches for releasing their power. They are enigmatic but this book gives you every technique you might need to penetrate their mystery. Tony is a labyrinth designer and healer and he lives in Cork. 360pp, 228 x 153 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £17.99

SACRED MESSAGES OF SHAMANIC AFRICA by Carley Mattimore and Linda Star Wolf
The West has embraced much of Eastern philosophy, but less known and understood still is the deep ancient wisdom that comes out of Africa. Shamans know of the special energies that lie along the 31st meridian, known as the spine of Mother Earth. The authors connect with the wisdom of the spirit animals native here, in particular the White Lion which represents spiritual awakening. A lot of information has been gathered from time spent in Africa and wisdom shared by significant people the authors met there. So this is a book to be read slowly and chewed over carefully to extract a new perspective on the higher consciousness buried in our DNA. 336pp, 228 x 154 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £16.99

A Guide to Starting a Cygnus Café
W
e know that we have many members who are interested in starting Cygnus Cafés in their community, and that they have questions, both about how to get started and also how they want their group to run. Below is a miniguide to running a Cygnus Café to give you a taste of what you can expect – if you would like to start your own Café please do get in touch. ❖ The starting point for setting up a group is the
purpose of a Cygnus Café, and that is creating a space for you to meet people of like mind in your own locality. Nowadays it is often the case that you might find you can only get so far by yourself using a book. Sometimes it can be a great help on your spiritual journey to share issues that feel unresolved, with others of like heart.
❖ Many groups take a little
while to gain momentum, and this is normal. We suggest you avoid the temptation of trying to find a perfect arrangement. ❖ Setting up for the
meeting we suggest that the host prepares the room in the most appropriate way, arranging the seating so that everyone has eye-to-eye contact. Meetings generally begin with everyone taking turns to say their name and where they are from and, if they wish, a mention about something they may want to talk about later. ❖ Many groups have found it
❖ Most of our groups run in what
very helpful to keep the level of the meeting at a higher level by setting the intention of the group to the highest good at the beginning of the meeting. So that, whatever happens, the highest good may come out of it.
we would call an unstructured way, they have no agenda and allow the magic of the moment to provide the topics spontaneously, depending on who wishes to share their recently experienced insights or share their current concerns of the heart.
❖ Gradually most groups begin
to observe how Cygnus Cafés can grow in depth as participants feel more comfortable and they can share their vulnerabilities and “soft spots”. This gives others the confidence to share their concerns or doubts.
❖ When getting down to
practicalities the first thing you need is a space, generally meetings are held in members’ homes or quiet rooms in cafés or community spaces. Any room hire costs etc. are shared by the participants on a donation basis. We advise avoiding noisy venues or spaces that have no door, as this helps a great deal. You need a safe space where you know you will not be interrupted. ❖ When thinking about when and how often to hold
your meetings, consider the needs of the group when deciding what is best for (most of ) you. Some groups choose mornings, others evenings, some even choose a weekend. Larger groups sometimes choose to have two meetings in a month, once in the evening and once in the morning, to match the different lifestyles. Most meeting last for around 2 hours and our advice is to stick to the same day every month, week or fortnight to allow people to organise their diaries.
❖
We love hearing from our members and finding out what you are up to at your café meetings. Please send your comments, thoughts and updates to editor@cygnus-books.co.uk so that we can include them on this page.
❖ For meeting support you can contact Vicky Hartley at Cygnus on

LIFESHOCKS – AND HOW TO LOVE THEM BY SOPHIE SABBAGE
D
own the ages it has been a staple of popular wisdom that challenges are sent to help us live better lives and become better human beings. So much so that it has become cheesy, even annoying. When ‘bad’ things happen, wellmeaning friends often fish it out of a river of collective consciousness with platitudes like, “Just remember, we are never given more than we can handle.” See. Annoying. There is no why. There is no how. There is no passage out of the morass. But a school of thought that integrates Western psychology with Eastern philosophy has devised a systematic account of how this wisdom actually works. It has been honed over six decades of clinical and practical application, but never revealed to the reading public until Lifeshocks was published in June 2018. This book explains how shocks to the system awaken us to our conditioning, our unconscious fears and all the ways we limit our potential – in very personal ways. While the word “lifeshocks” is not in our common vernacular, most of us will hear it and think, “Oh, yes, I’ve had some of those!” Yet, to be clear, lifeshocks are different from ‘life challenges’, a number of which I write about through personal examples and case studies that many people can identify with: body image, sexual assault, addiction, divorce, bullying, bereavement, the quest for true love, professional failures and grave illness. But lifeshocks are very specific encounters with what we cannot control, predict or plan. They are collision points between life as we
Learning from lifeshocks expect it to be and life as it really is. For example, I have been living with ‘terminal’ cancer for four years. It is an ongoing challenge. But hearing the words, “You have multiple brain tumours Mrs Sabbage” was a lifeshock, one that confronted a fear that runs far deeper than my fear of dying – losing my cognitive abilities, not having value if I can’t contribute, being useless. Similarly, my father’s prolonged illness and death was an ongoing, heartcracking experience that lasted two years. But the moment two paramedics carried him into his care-home bedroom on a stretcher, ashen grey with an oxygen mask on his face, after a traumatic day in a hospital ward where he didn’t want to die, was a lifeshock. It was poignant and precise, striking my guilt for leaving him on that ward like flint against rock.
LIFESHOCKS by Sophie Sabbage
Sophie is the author of the bestseller The Cancer Whisperer, and she is still living with the effects of cancer. Thus she is in a reasonable position to talk about what she refers to as lifeshocks, and here she gives a crucial account of how to thrive from them. It’s a question of living in the present, being unsentimental and seeing things as they are. Her account is full of personal stories which highlight her points – everything is treated with honesty, no matter how painful you think it might feel. It’s about life in all its messiness. It’s not artificially redemptive, and she is not “better” but she is living the journey fully. 416pp, 223 x 146 mm, Hardback, 2018, RRP £17.99
❖ Code: 280432 ❖ Non-Member Price: £14.43 ❖ Member: £12.99

In the simplest terms, a lifeshock is a moment in time we did not want or expect. They surprise us, blindside us, soften and stir us. Sometimes they slap us hard in the face. Some scratch the surface of our lives while others strike deep into our being. They often seem random, unfairly distributed, out of the blue. The specificity of these moments is important. You know those times when you are telling a story from your past and, as you relate a particular part of it, the emotions you felt at the time rise again – sometimes with surprising force? This is because those feelings – and the thoughts that create them – are locked in the memory of a lifeshock moment, even if you didn’t register it at the time. Consequently, we can unlock the unconscious mind at will, a practice that has spared many people years of therapy. If this was the only reason for writing Lifeshocks, it would be enough. In this book I explain how lifeshocks awaken us through my own engagement with them as well as the teachings that have been passed down to me. My mentor, Dr. K. Bradford Brown, was a clinical psychologist, psychotherapist and theologian who was mentored by some of the great awakeners of the twentieth century: Viktor Frankl, Alan Watts and Carl Rogers, to name a few. These are the giants on whose shoulders I stand. In particular, I focus on three kinds of lifeshock we all receive: limiting lifeshocks, which challenge our arrogance and illusions of control; exposing lifeshocks, which challenge our selfdeception and pretences; and evoking lifeshocks, which challenge our cruelty and cold-heartedness. I also show how lifeshocks guide us back to the best in ourselves and the possibilities we have abandoned at the roadside – while answering the question, “Yes, but how do we decipher and learn from them?” Life is not what it seems. We are not what we fear we are or believe we have to be. Extraordinariness is not the reserve of the few and the sacred is not confined to other realms. To recognise the purpose of lifeshocks is one thing that can change everything. It can answer our deepest longings and it can bring us home to ourselves at any moment in any situation on any day.

ARE YOU AN EMPATH? BY JUDITH ORLOFF MD
I
’m so passionate about this topic both professionally and personally because I’ve had to develop specific strategies to manage the challenges of being an empath myself. These allow me to protect my sensitivities so I can maximize their benefits—and there are so many! I want to share with you how to become a balanced, empowered, and happy empath. To thrive, you must learn ways to avoid taking on the energy, symptoms, and stress of others. I also want to educate your loved ones and peers—family, coworkers, bosses, parents, and romantic partners—on how best to support and communicate with you. In this book, I will show you how to accomplish these goals. I offer The Empath’s Survival Guide as a resource for kindred sensitive souls to find understanding and acceptance in a world that is often coarse, heartless, and disdainful of sensitivity. In it, I challenge the status quo and create a new normal for how to view sensitivity, wherever you are on the spectrum. There is nothing “wrong” with being sensitive. In fact, you are about to discover what’s most “right” about yourself. Through this book, its companion audio program, and my workshops for empaths, I want to create a community of support so that you can find your tribe, be authentic, and shine. I want to support a movement of people who honor their sensitivities. Welcome to a circle of love! My message to you is one of hope and acceptance. I encourage you to embrace your gifts and manifest your full power on the empath journey. Empaths have an extremely reactive neurological system. We don’t have the same filters that other people do to block out stimulation. As a consequence, we absorb into our own bodies both the positive and stressful energies around us. We are so sensitive that it’s like holding something in a hand that has fifty fingers instead of five. We are truly super responders… …I was an only child, so I spent a lot of time by myself. I had no one to relate to who could understand
16
Empathy is the medicine the world needs my sensitivities. No one seemed to be like me. My parents, who were both physicians—I come from a family of twenty-five physicians—said, “Sweetheart, toughen up; get a thicker skin”, which I didn’t want or even know how to do. I couldn’t go to crowded malls or parties. I’d walk in feeling fine and walk out exhausted, dizzy, anxious, or suffering from some ache or pain I didn’t have before. What I didn’t know back then was that everyone has a subtle energy
field surrounding their body, a subtle radiant light that penetrates and extends beyond it a distance of inches or even feet. These fields communicate information such as emotions and physical well-being or distress. When we are in crowded places, the energy fields of others overlap with ours. I picked up all of these intense sensations, but I had absolutely no idea what they were or how to interpret them. I just felt anxious and tired in crowds. And most of all, I wanted to escape. As a teenager in Los Angeles, I got heavily involved with drugs to block out my sensitivities. (I’m not recommending this to you!) Then, with my empathy numbed, I could cope. I was able to attend parties and hang out at shopping malls, just like my friends, and would feel fine. What a relief that was! In my memoir Second Sight, I wrote about how I turned to drugs to shut out my intuition and empathic abilities. But after a near tragic car accident, during which I went over a 1,500-foot cliff in Topanga Canyon at three in the morning in an Austin Mini Cooper, my parents were scared to death and sent me to a psychiatrist. Naturally, I fought my psychiatrist the whole way. But, in fact, this angel in human form was the first person to help me realize that to become whole I had to embrace my sensitivities, not run from them. This was the start of my healing and self-acceptance as an empath. Extracted from The Empath’s Survival Guide with permission of Sounds True.
THE EMPATH’S SURVIVAL GUIDE by Judith Orloff
Now in paperback, this title has had a big impact on the culture, and on people who find everyday situations challenging and feel at odds with the world. It took the debate on from people just being highly sensitive with all the psychological implications, and into more spiritual realms, recognizing that they might be different in other ways, perhaps more intuitive, beyond just finding life a bit demanding. Judith Orloff is an experienced author and therapist, and her voice is wise and compassionate. More than any other book on the subject, it is full of action steps and specific practical tips. 264pp, 227 x 154 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £14.99

This chunky little book contains 365 pages, each one giving a thought for a particular day. Dr Dyer was a leading voice in the field of self-development for many years, known as “the father of motivation”. Here is a collection of some of his most significant quotes. Some are humorous, others food for deep thought. These daily snippets challenge us to examine the voices inside us, the words of our parents, the warnings and encouragement of others. They offer us reminders to be aware of our thoughts, because our thoughts are what make us who we are.
YOU ARE PSYCHIC by Sherrie Dillard
SAVE 33%
We all have psychic awareness within us, but it is often camouflaged in our thoughts, emotions and energy fields. This explains why, at times, you might suddenly know something without realising how you know it, or a gut feeling tells you how a situation will end. These are both signs; and professional intuitive Sherrie Dillard will show you how to develop and refine those abilities. She begins with a description of the four psychic types – mental, emotional, physical and spiritual – to allow you to identify with which type you may be. The aim, however, is not to stick to this type, but to open yourself up and become comfortable with the intuitive impressions of each, and use them all in your practice. 312pp, 227 x 155 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £15.99

Spirituality — BOOK REVIEWS SPIRITUAL SCIENCE by Steve Taylor
THE WISDOM OF KING SOLOMON by Haim Shapira
In the last Review we featured a new edition of his book The Fall, and now there’s a brand new title from Steve Taylor. It looks at spiritual science, or is it rather scientific spirituality? As Gary Lachman says on the cover, “Materialism is dead. It just doesn’t know it.” The text is not light and it rewards close reading – Steve is a Senior Lecturer in psychology at Leeds Beckett University – but it’s a book we can all learn from, because the tide is turning and we need to be better informed. Spirit matters. This is an intelligent and highly instructive book that offers a new and integrated vision of the world.

IN SEARCH OF WISDOM by Matthieu Ricard, Christophe André and Alexandre Jollien
Three French friends – Buddhist monk Ricard, philosopher André and psychiatrist Jollien – gather in the middle of a forest in the Dordogne to explore “what matters most” through generous dialogue. It’s a real joy to read: the affection and respect they have for each other bears fruit in an intelligent but readable text. Big themes get tackled in an entertaining way, and there’s much to learn, especially from Ricard, the well-known author and translator for the Dalai Lama. “Our dearest wish is that when you cast your eyes on these pages, you will discover subjects for reflection to inspire you and brighten the light of your life.”
Alain de Botton wrote a book called How Proust Can Change Your Life and Haim Shapira is aiming to do the same with King Solomon. Solomon is the named author of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament and it contains many now legendary aphorisms like “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind”. Shapira applies this wisdom to everyday life, and brings into his account philosophy, literature and music. He makes reference to, amongst others, Simone Weil, Tolstoy and Kierkegaard, and the book is fun, stimulating and extremely wise. 208pp, 197 x 129 mm, Paperback, 2018, RRP £9.99

NOTES FROM THE UNIVERSE ON ABUNDANCE by Mike Dooley
More amazing and wonderfully produced cards that have come from the Universe via Mike Dooley. They remind us of all the abundance around us and how we do have access to it, if we would only believe it. For example “Today you are a magnet…for infinite abundance, divine intelligence, and unlimited love. Actually, this has ALWAYS been true.” The colours on the cards are vibrant and on the reverse of each is a wonderful heightened landscape from nature, which is an inspiration in itself. Carry a card with you, hide it somewhere or display it on your desk, for day-long contemplation. 60 cards, 138 x 104 mm, Boxed Set, 2016, RRP £13.99

This profound but compact book gives clear and wise advice on unblocking and releasing heart energy. There is great power in the heart – people think it’s a metaphor when writers and poets describe matters of the heart, but that’s not true. The heart perceives and possesses wisdom; it’s just that the mind tends to shout louder. The book is printed in full colour with inspirational images and there are many meditations and exercises throughout for learning to use this incredible energy.
