EDITOR’S LETTER

Some versions of courage

W

ell, very few of us saw this coming did we? Covid lesson number one: humility. We really don’t know much for sure most of the time. At least at the conventional mind level. Cygnus has coped with this far better than we expected. It’s not that we thought it would be deeply damaging, but there have been economies, staff furloughs and warehouses not sending out books, and we are still bringing out the next Review. Even though there’s a slight time-lag on this one, we are not going to miss any copies. Please bear in mind that this magazine is covering quite a broad time span and there are some books here that aren’t in stock for a month or so, but these are all marked. We can still take orders for them anyway. I have been bowled over by all the support and fellow feeling I have received from my Cygnus friends. I feel I shouldn’t say this because I shouldn’t have been so surprised by your kindness, but still it’s been a constant and unexpected pleasure. So many of you have proudly and enthusiastically renewed your memberships, have renewed after a long absence or have become members for the first time. Your positive words are always so gratefully

received and your belief in this project keeps me going and that’s no exaggeration. I really can’t pretend it’s been easy and this crazy situation has felt harder than I ever expected, but it also contains the seeds of a revolution and we need the courage to hang in there. Talking of courage, when I think of Cygnus, Ann Napier is still the face that comes to mind, and I have tracked down another letter from her to reprint. She still provides the momentum that drives Cygnus forward, and it’s an honour to be helping with that process. She and Geoff started Cygnus and kept it going for so long and that energy is still a vital part of Cygnus. On top of that, her writing is wonderful: I think my writing is ok but hers is just at a higher level, and that’s not false modesty. I have included an article by her about nature and the Mother Goddess. I had to make a few cuts for space, and remove references to a couple of authors who aren’t so current, but otherwise everything she wrote 16 years ago is absolutely of this time and full of relevant wisdom. We all get kind of subsumed by the greater energy that is Cygnus, which is more powerful than the sum of all of us. I can’t believe where we have got to, where we are all part of this open, non-judgmental spiritual movement, where we help each other on our diverse and individual journeys, while at the same time all serving the Light. Because, whatever that might consist of, we know it’s right and we know that’s what all our efforts should be devoted to. And we don’t waste energy arguing about it. Another aspect of courage is just waiting, just turning up and holding firm. These quiet forms of courage to me are greater than the “all guns blazing” approach. I might be anxious, I might be unsure, but I am going to stay here, be present and see what happens without walking away. It’s particularly relevant in these days, when the temptation is to throw up our hands or panic. So many contributions to Cygnus seem to fall into place at just the right

I have been bowled over by all the support and fellow feeling I have received from my Cygnus friends. moment and I am extremely grateful for everyone’s help. I would especially like to thank Wendy Erlick for writing for us again and giving us guidance on how to look for healing we can trust in the UK. It’s an important service. I would also like to remember and show gratitude to Alan Jacobs, who edited the wonderful collection Poems to Make the Soul Sing featured on page 16, and who died while we were putting this magazine together. The book is a wonderful memorial to him. Please everyone, draw strength and courage from the energy everyone puts into Cygnus and into spiritual transformation. There are lots of you and you have so many good things to say and you are shining beacons to everyone around you.

SLAY YOUR DRAGONS WITH COMPASSION BY MALCOLM STERN

M

y third book Slay Your Dragons With Compassion will be published by Watkins on September 29th. It is 16 years since I wrote Falling in Love/Staying in Love and I have tried many times to write another book. All my efforts felt flat and lacked inspiration. It was only in the face of the tragic loss of my daughter Melissa, that some time later I felt the call to write. I realised that I had found some resilience in myself and had recognised the resources that had built up over the years of my personal development journey. I set out to honour and make sense of Melissa’s suicide, but found that, in many ways, the book was being born and taking its own shape. I brought in Ben Craib a talented writer to help me get the words to sing on the page and capture my thinking. It has been a while since I finished the writing, but recently in a peer support group, a lightbulb moment came over me. In my mind I was writing a book to help educate others and had seen myself deeply ensconced in the teacher role. That is, of course, true and I genuinely believe that this book can impact others at a powerful and visceral level. What I hadn’t realised was that I was writing my own instruction manual for thriving in tough times.

Confronting Life’s Challenges I took ten practices and fleshed them out with personal tales alongside stories from my psychotherapy groups. I am grateful for the generosity of my clients who were mainly anonymised and without exception approached for permission. I see the stories as illustrations of the practices. Each of the chapters has practical exercises at the end. It is my experience that genuine development in our spiritual and psychological nature is normally earned by facing and transcending challenges in our lives and then firming up our learning with the creation of positive habits that become part of our daily routine.

‘In order to thrive, we must confront our resistances, fears and self-doubts and view the challenges that block our way as dragons’ SLAY YOUR DRAGONS WITH COMPASSION by Malcolm Stern

At first glance these practices can look simplistic, but I have found that having an awareness of them in my daily interactions with others has brought me more understanding and peace. The practices include building a support system (what Buddhism calls a Sangha) of like-minded others to support us on our life’s journey; practising authenticity and honesty in our relationships, and when necessary speaking uncomfortable truths to ourselves and others, but always with compassion; and the development of self-knowledge so that we can access wisdom instead of reactivity. In order to thrive, we must confront our resistances, fears and self-doubts and view the challenges that block our way as dragons, which we are called to slay with compassion. If we can meet and navigate our darkest moments in this way, we can discover the gold that lives within each of us. The book teaches how to draw on these easy practices to help us face our demons and build emotional muscle, so that when the inevitable storms blow across our path, we have the power tools to draw on to support ourselves. I was touched at the supportive endorsements I received from wise teachers like Eckhart Tolle, Jack Kornfield, Eva Schloss and Elizabeth Gilbert. I am happy to have written a book that was waiting to be birthed and in the writing I have experienced some cathartic healing around Melissa’s life and death.

Essential Autumn reading

This wonderful manual on the human spirit and its capacity to thrive has garnered praise from celebrities and teachers as diverse as Eckhart Tolle, Elizabeth Gilbert and Craig David. Malcolm was already an experienced therapist and his speciality was group work but nothing could prepare him for the suicide of his daughter Melissa in 2014. However it did push him to work more deeply on himself and with the groups he was involved with and this is one of the fruits of that process. It’s full of fictionalized accounts of ordinary people thriving in the face of great hardship and there are countless lessons that we too can learn. It’s truly inspirational to read how people can come to realizations about themselves and start to make changes in their lives. Malcolm is also a leading figure in the UK spiritual development movement having co-founded Alternatives in London. 200pp, 135 x 216 mm, Paperback, 2020, RRP £12.99

A WELCOME LETTER FROM MAY 2004 BY ANN NAPIER

A

few weeks ago, a friend asked us what we thought of Dan Brown’s thriller, The Da Vinci Code. At the time, we told her that, not having the strongest of stomachs, we hadn’t been able to get past the beginning bit, which was rather gruesome. In order to read what Dan Brown had to say about Mary Magdalene, the Holy Grail and the Mother Goddess (some of our favourite subjects, by the way), we hadn’t felt able to pay the price of swallowing all that gore. A couple of days later, though, we went out for a walk. Now, almost whenever we wander among the woods, hills and lanes surrounding our home, we are overwhelmed by a sense of sacredness. Images flood into our minds of people from ancient times who may have walked this land, and how they must have experienced the Earth beneath their feet as their holy, all-providing Mother – not in the vague, almost metaphorical sense we might be able to muster nowadays – but literally, so much that they would naturally feel themselves moving and breathing in the aura of sacredness arising from the Earth. And a response of adoration, joy, love and devotion would spontaneously well up in them like those liquid notes from a blackbird’s throat. When choosing sites for their tracks, temples or homes, these Earthguardians of old would have obeyed implicitly the wishes of their Mother the earth. To do otherwise would have felt to them like inflicting wounds on their own bodies… Experiencing glimpses of this ancient glory, we can’t help wondering how most of humanity could forget it so completely. How could this most essential thing – the Mother’s love (which the ancients felt arising from within them as much as from the Earth) – be ripped away from us so absolutely? So fully that even when, now, we try to reconnect with the Mother, we generally somehow fall short of the full sense of adoration, joy, love and devotion this connection ought to inspire. Or we fail to connect with the full splendour of Her Truth,

Lessons from the book of nature polluting it instead with our own culturally-acquired preconceptions. Well, whatever the cause, it is clear that the most massive wedges have been driven between humanity and its divine parents: Heaven-Earth, between the divine unity of ManWoman, and between the divine male and female aspects of each individual. The result is a car without an engine, and an engine without a car. Of course it won’t go!... Having come to that rather stark conclusion, we decided we were prepared to forgive Dan Brown a bit of gore, and resolved to read the rest of The Da Vinci Code. As a novel, it

was very exciting and we thoroughly enjoyed following the Jesus-Mary clues. However, it has to be said that, as regards the truth we sense in our hearts regarding the Jesus-Mary, Man-Woman mystery, the whole of it has not been written down in any book, unless perhaps it was recorded in some ancient tome that has since been twisted out of all recognition by a priesthood more interested in power and control than in truth… So what are we to do? Well, there are two books still remaining in the world, where the full truth is recorded in all its purity. These are: the Book of Nature, and the Book of the Heart. No one can take these away from us and, if we are ready, no one and no thing can stop us from reading them. What can stop us from reading them are those two natural desires which so often cause people to grasp at something less than the truth: the desire to avoid the discomfort of having no answer or a paradoxical one, and the desire to be right, to conform and to be in the “winning team”. Let’s try to observe these desires when they arise in us, and rise above them. Then, however many clues we may glean from lesser books, we’ll have the faith to trust Nature and our own hearts to be our highest teachers and surest guides. And we won’t be in too much of a rush to attach words and concepts to the wonders we perceive in the stillness of our souls.

AWESTRUCK by Jonah Paquette

This of course is a book about awe in all its different manifestations. It’s a strong emotion as you can tell from the adjective derived from it, “awful”. The book is a manifesto for finding more awe in our lives as it’s such a magical and restorative feeling. The author talks about the science of awe and how it works on a physiological level. Finally he gives us over 60 practices which will help us to experience awe on a regular basis. It’s a genuine palliative amidst all the rush and craziness of life to appreciate even briefly the wonder of just being and not to feel worried or weighed down by the heavy stuff. By knowing how to experience awe for yourself, you can also nurture it and enable others to appreciate that delicious feeling of transcendence. 196pp, 140 x 214 mm, Paperback, 2020, RRP £13.99

A BACKBONE ORGANISATION FOR SPIRITUAL HEALING BY WENDY ERLICK

T

he pages of alternative magazines are often (and rightly so) packed with wonderful offerings from talented healers. There is a real need for their services: even before Covid-19 it was estimated that in the UK during 2020 around 9 million people will use some form of complementary or alternative medicine (CAM). The dystopian descent into the pandemic of Covid-19, with its repercussions for physical and mental health, means that as I write now the figures are certainly higher. People are looking for alternatives which can work alongside existing treatments, but which bring back a measure of self-healing and a feeling of empowerment. Spiritual or Energy Healers work by facilitating energy to allow the body to heal itself through clearing blockages in the energy fields, repairing them and rebalancing our energy so our body’s self-healing ability is re-enabled. But who co-ordinates and regulates healing practitioners? If you are interested in trying alternative healing, how can you make sure that you commission a reputable healer? That you are not overcharged? That the practitioner you commission is insured, properly qualified and belongs to a professional organization? That if things aren’t made better, they are at least not made worse? In 1999 UK Healers (UKH) formed as a voluntary self-regulating body for Spiritual/Energy Healers in the UK. Their purpose is to ensure ‘excellence in Spiritual Healing’ both for practitioners in their training and for clients wanting to receive healing from a healer. Today UK Healers is the most significant member organization with the largest proportion of trained practitioners in the UK. Its work is to support and facilitate the integration of Spiritual Healing into the mainstream, making it available in a professional framework. It does this through facilitating safe, appropriate and effective practices of healing to the public by registered practitioners, ensuring ongoing

An introduction to UK Healers accreditation of courses (all UK Spiritual Healers are required to undertake professional accredited training), maintaining a register of Healers belonging to member organizations whose standards of training and professional conduct meet UK Healers’ high standards, and regulating the standards of professional practice. The pandemic means that we have entered a new landscape. Healers also need organizational support to help navigate the change that we are all now experiencing. Although we defuse the impact of C-19 by calling it “The New Normal”, I am still stunned by its impact and not sure yet how we will emerge. For healers, the benefit of training and registering with UKH is that they

will be joining the approved selfregulation body for Spiritual Energy Healers in the United Kingdom. They will become part of a responsible and caring group. They will be able to access well-considered and established standards for training and code of conduct, including meeting the safety requirements of C-19. That they are included in the Registration of Healers. That they contribute to the promotion of healing as a reputable therapy. And that they themselves are supported. If you are interested in trying Spiritual/Energy Healing, or any type of alternative healing, it would be wise to check out that the practitioner you are considering is both insured and belongs to a professional body. Ask to see their Certificate of Training and for endorsements/recommendations from other clients. Ask how long they trained for: this should be measured by years, rather than days or months! And don’t rush into booking a block of sessions, without having a trial session first. No practitioner worth their salt will mind you doing this. Information about UK Healers may be found at www.ukhealers/info or please email janet@ukhealers.info Wendy Jane Erlick (www.celestialcoaching.co.uk) is a Bi-aura Energy practitioner, intuitive coach, and in-house Angel Channeler for Watkins Books. THE GIFT OF AN ANGEL by Wendy Jane Erlick

There’s a great quotation from renowned author Cilla Conway on this book, and it sums up my feelings as well: “I don’t normally read books on angels as I find many of them too saccharine, but I found Wendy Erlick’s book direct, authentic and sometimes very moving”. A spiritual gift like this can descend on any of us at any time, and her story is well-told and compelling, but the account becomes incredibly useful in the second half of the book when she goes into detail about her training and shows us how too we can get in touch with invisible beings. She discusses the different angels and what they specialize in and how we can work with them, but all this in a very straightforward and refreshingly non-ethereal way. 184pp, 141 x 216 mm, Paperback, 2016, RRP £10.99

BOOK REVIEWS – Broader Dimensions

DEVA by Jacquelyn E Lane

LIVING SOULS IN THE SPIRIT DIMENSION by Chris Hardy

THE REBEL ANGELS AMONG US by Timothy Wyllie

Psychologist Chris Hardy started communicating with her father soon after he died. This convinced her that there truly was a higher dimension of the soul, which the living always have access to. Combining her own experiences with years of psi research and material from ancient cultures, this book presents a thorough investigation into how closely connected we really are to those who have passed before us. The author discusses paranormal occurrences, near death and OBEs, spirit communication, and much more in a clear and compelling way, and ultimately brings us to the positive affirmation that physical death is not the end of conscious life.

Diana Cooper is back with a new book dedicated to the great cosmic beings that we call unicorns. She describes them as beings of light, which bring comfort, purity and healing for the human race. Actually, Cooper notes that their real home is said to be among the stars and it is only in the last few years that we have started to reconnect with their pure light-frequencies again, since the fall of Atlantis. This book will teach you how to reach out to your own spirit-unicorn which is said to be able to guide you through the dimensions of light. It also teaches how unicorns are connected to the chakras, the moon cycles, our dreams, numerology, and much more.

Timothy Wyllie has passed on but here’s another book in this series which are “co-authored” by the angelic watcher Georgia. In this book, their lives and experiences are interwoven and we get to move between the esoteric discoveries Timothy had over the last 40 years, along with the cosmic events taking place on Georgia’s plane of existence. We learn the story of how Atlantis came to fall and how this affected the planet, as well as how our world hosts millions of angels who help and guide us to a brighter future. As always with Wyllie’s books, the reader is taken on a great adventure from the very first page, and is moved from one cosmic revelation to another.

ACTIVATING YOUR 5D FREQUENCY by Judith Corvin-Blackburn

I’M STILL WITH YOU by Sherrie Dillard

This book builds on the work of authors such as Barbara Hand Clow, and is a clear exploration of what it means to be living as a human in the fifth dimension. By clearing our lower frequencies and becoming more in-tuned with our higher and more subtle ones, we can regain our true nature as the highly evolved beings we were before our “fall” into 3D. The author describes this as extending beyond the dimensions of our common psycho-physical awareness, and entering into a state of unconditional love, which is the 5D frequency. She also shows us how such a shift can take place and what our expected experience should be like.

Sherrie is the bestselling author of many other books about psychic experiences and she’s been a professional medium for over 30 years. This book is full of wonderful stories of communication from the other side, including encounters with her own ex-husband. It’s a heart-warming book for when we feel the world’s getting a bit cold and mechanical and it piles up the evidence for there being so much more to the web of life. These stories show that a continuation of our relationships with loved ones on the other side is a perfect opportunity for forgiveness and healing on both sides. There are also many exercises that will help us to move beyond grief and loss and develop relationships with those in spirit.

o, you have a mission to fulfill in this lifetime, but you don’t have to do it on your own – you’re part of a cosmic team. This team is comprised of several spirit guides of different types. Each has their own special way of helping you fulfill your soul’s task. Such a cosmic team has at least three permanent members and some specialists who join for a limited time to accomplish certain tasks. They then leave to assist someone else. Everyone has at least one ancestor guide and one angel on their team. Who the others are depends on your past experiences as a soul and what you came here to do. Ancestor spirits, for example, help you create loving relationships in your life, while deities concern themselves more with the legacy you leave behind. Your core team of heavenly helpers are the ones who stay with you your entire life. They’re well aware of the soul contract you agreed to before you embarked on your trip to Earth. Their job is to help you unlock, unearth, and polish those parts of your soul that will have a positive impact on your own and other people’s lives. They have the information you need to recognize your specific skills and talents and how to use them to make this world a more egalitarian, inclusive, and collaborative place. I realize that you might think you’re not special enough to have a team of spirit guides. Well, I don’t agree! Why else would you be interested in spiritual topics, and spirit guides in particular? It’s your soul guiding you to the things that are meaningful to you and that will further your spiritual growth. Your interests, hobbies, and desires always show you the way to fulfilling your soul’s mission. Therefore, your wish to connect with your guides shows you’re a soul who didn’t just incarnate for your own pleasure and growth, but to raise the vibration of the planet. You do that by sharing your skills, gifts, and talents with the world. Your spirit guides are essential to that process, and on a

Have you ever asked yourself: what is a spirit guide? Do I have a spirit guide? Can they help me? What is my life’s purpose? If so, this book could be a big help to you. It is an exploration into the different types of cosmic helpers that people of all cultures across the world have experienced. This book will help you connect with your own spirit guides. The author answers tricky questions, explains the benefits and dangers, and then includes a quiz to determine the types of guides available to you. Once you are ready, connecting with these guides will help you align with your higher self, increase your faith and trust in both yourself and the universe, allow you to discover your hidden talents and, finally, put you on the path to discover your life’s purpose. 272pp, 135 x 216 mm, Paperback, 2020, RRP £12.99

When the world gets chaotic and confounding, we need spiritual practice more than ever. This charming introduction, written by the author of The Life of Yogananda, was written before the Covid-19 epidemic, but it’s so appropriate and apposite that the author didn’t have to add anything to cover these recent dramatic developments. It’s probably a bit beginner level for many Cygnus members, but it’s a great book for someone new to the spiritual path, who wants to change orientation or who wants to reinforce their existing practice. It gives basic guidance to meditation, mantra, visualization and sacred space, to name just a few chapters. The book is a great refuge in these demanding times offered by a wise and compassionate teacher.

Many of us are struggling with ageing, and in our contemporary culture old age is viewed as a negative and something we should try to “avoid” as much as possible. However, getting older is simply a fact of life and it is truly impossible to escape it. In this book Carmel Shalev discusses ageing from a spiritual perspective, mainly drawing on the ancient legends and sayings of the Buddha. Here we find the idea that everything constantly changes and of the impermanence of life, yet also how we can come to terms with these harsh facts and cure ourselves of our fears regarding them. She shares her own contemplations and realizations and helps us to see how instead of desperately trying to avoid getting older, we can embrace and become empowered by the wisdom which only coming of age can bring us. ❖ Code: 300359 ❖ Non-Member Price: £7.76 ❖ Member Price: £6.99

Caroline Myss (best known for her modern classic Anatomy of the Spirit) is back with a new book which explores the mystical power of prayer. Instead of confining this practice to a particular form of religious dogma, she rather sets out a method where we use prayer as a tool to gain an intimate relationship with a higher cosmic order. Many times we are too caught up in Available late our own little bubbles, leaving us somewhat September disconnected to the greater whole. Myss gives us 100 different prayers to inspire us to reach beyond our egos and more actively seek out the power of grace in our daily lives. These beautifully written prayers have nothing formal about them at all, but rather are like direct conversations with the divine, and are inspired by the poetic words of great mystics like Rumi and St. Teresa of Avila.

Energy therapist Nikki Gresham-Record has created this deck of Chakra Cards, which are used to stop unhealthy beliefs taking root within our energy centres. There are 8 cards assigned to each of the 7 chakras, which should be used as focus points of meditation in order for us to uncover emotional, mental and spiritual blockages that can be removed by balancing them with positive beliefs. By contemplating the energy which arises with each card, we can clear negative energy holding us back, and instead become attuned to a healthier and more empowered life. The deck comes with 56 cards, a guidebook with full descriptions of their individual meanings and of how to use the deck following the author’s own method, first outlined in her book Working With Chakras For Belief Change.

Serge Beddington-Behrens is one of those rare individuals who would happily be labelled as a radical optimist. Although he understands the many issues which underlie the construction of our current age, he still holds firm to the conviction that we can do something about it. In this book he proposes that the fundamental lack of soul, love and compassion is what has led us here, but if we find ways to revitalise those aspects of ourselves and society, we will have the ability to move on into a better future. Either we agree on fostering a cynical, negative and hateful world, or we go for one guided by tolerance, equality and peace. This of course might sound a little bit clichéd to some, but the author cleverly dares us to rethink some of our preconceptions of how and why we should not allow optimism to be more widespread. ❖ Code: 300333 ❖ Non-Member Price £10.55 ❖ Member Price: £9.50

A Guide to Starting a Cygnus Café

W

e know that we have many members who are interested in starting Cygnus Cafés in their community, and that they have questions, both about how to get started and also how they want their group to run. Below is a mini-guide to running a Cygnus Café to give you a taste of what you can expect – if you would like to start your own Café please do get in touch. ❖ The starting point for setting up a group is the purpose

of a Cygnus Café, and that is creating a space for you to meet people of like mind in your own locality. Nowadays it is often the case that you might find you can only get so far by yourself using a book. Sometimes it can be a great help on your spiritual journey to share issues that feel unresolved, with others of like heart.

❖ Many groups take a little

while to gain momentum, and this is normal. We suggest you avoid the temptation of trying to find a perfect arrangement. ❖ Setting up for the

meeting we suggest that the host prepares the room in the most appropriate way, arranging the seating so that everyone has eye-to-eye contact. Meetings generally begin with everyone taking turns to say their name and where they are from and, if they wish, a mention about something they may want to talk about later. ❖ Many groups have found it

❖ Most of our groups run in what

we would call an unstructured way, they have no agenda and allow the magic of the moment to provide the topics spontaneously, depending on who wishes to share their recently experienced insights or share their current concerns of the heart.

very helpful to keep the level of the meeting at a higher level by setting the intention of the group to the highest good at the beginning of the meeting. So that, whatever happens, the highest good may come out of it.

❖ When getting down to

❖ Gradually most groups

practicalities the first thing you need is a space, generally meetings are held in members’ homes or quiet rooms in cafés or community spaces. Any room hire costs etc. are shared by the participants on a donation basis. We advise avoiding noisy venues or spaces that have no door, as this helps a great deal. You need a safe space where you know you will not be interrupted. ❖ When thinking about when and how often to hold

your meetings, consider the needs of the group when deciding what is best for (most of ) you. Some groups choose mornings, others evenings, some even choose a weekend. Larger groups sometimes choose to have two meetings in a month, once in the evening and once in the morning, to match the different lifestyles. Most meeting last for around 2 hours and our advice is to stick to the same day every month, week or fortnight to allow people to organise their diaries.

begin to observe how Cygnus Cafés can grow in depth as participants feel more comfortable and they can share their vulnerabilities and “soft spots”. This gives others the confidence to share their concerns or doubts.

We love hearing from our members and finding out what you are up to at your café meetings. Please send your comments, thoughts and updates to editor@cygnus-books.co.uk so that we can include them on this page.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HARVEST WITH LOVE? BY JO DUNBAR

M

Respect all garden life The herb is then either extracted as a tincture, or dried and cut up for herbal infusions. Sometimes it makes me so sad, when I hang marshmallow or Californian poppies to dry, and for a few days their petals open and close with the sun. Towards the end of summer, when I harvest and lay out bunches of plants, again it makes me sad, for they look like animals which have been killed. However – this is the big one – I do pay the plants in the best way I can. For example, it is tradition to offer honey to Vervain, but the ancients were far more meticulous than I when it came to honouring

their harvest. Great and specific ceremonies were conducted at very specific times. According to Pliny, the Druids harvested Vervain at the rising of Sirius, this being the height of summer. This is indeed an excellent time to cut Vervain. They would harvest when neither the Sun nor the Moon were in the sky, so as not to offend the planets by having to witness the sacred herb being cut. Before they harvested, an offering of honeycomb was given to the Earth as a token of amends for the “violence and wrongs of depriving her of so sacred a herb”. The herb was then cut, and held aloft in the left hand. The Druidesses had their own rituals for Vervain. It was so sacred they would not even touch it. On the full moon, at midnight, a long rope with a loop was thrown around the plant, and then tied to the big toe of a virgin who had to pull the rope until the plant was uprooted. We live so much more mundanely these days, and so in the autumn I put my plants to bed, tucked under a thick layer of manure and compost, so that they can rest and be fed over the dark cold winter months in the safety of Mother Earth. Jo Dunbar’s book The Spirit of the Hedgerow (£14.00) is published by Local Legend and is available on Amazon and at Botanica Medica.

PLANT WITCHERY by Juliet Diaz

Available in October

c

y apothecary garden is a community of sentient beings. The plants are the main players, but also the birds, the furry creatures, myself, and the human visitors – all contribute to the overall sense of harmony and contentment within that small space. This harmony, I hope, is conferred to my patients through the energy of the medicines, and of course, the quality of the products, hand harvested at their peak of power with love. So, what does that mean? I think it boils down to respect and consideration for all the beings of my garden – seen and unseen. Every living being craves to express itself freely; thus the first rule of herb harvesting is that you leave more than you take, and in this way, the plant can complete its life cycle by flowering, seeding and feeding the bees and butterflies. I take this sentience to the level where I ask the plant to show me which flowers (etc) I may take, and whilst this might seem quite ridiculous, I am aware that some flowers glow at me, while others push me away. I learnt this originally from nettles, who would gently sting me, and then I knew that it was time to move along. It is easy to drop a twiglet when harvesting, but out of respect these should always be collected, because it is not right to waste a miracle – for what is a plant whose body parts can heal us but a miracle? To my mind, the ultimate magic is when you take a weed, extract it, and give it to a sick human and their health is fully recovered. Alchemy and transformation. If at all possible, I don’t harvest a flower upon which an insect is feeding. Can you imagine having your larder stolen from you? Once the plant has been harvested, I leave the herb out for a few hours for the tiny insects to escape, for it is amazing how many tinies live amongst the petals. I often think what a wonderful life it must be to sleep enrobed in the silky petals of a fragrant rose.

Do you feel a deep connection and affinity with nature? Are you interested in learning about the magic of Mother Earth? This is certainly the book for you. This introduction to plant witchery is a joy to read with a real conversational style that is simple to follow. Peppered with anecdotes of the author’s journey to becoming a plant witch, the book lovingly guides you to begin your work with nature in order to ground, balance and shift your life. It includes a compendium of 200 of the author’s best-loved plant types, where the medicinal and magical properties of each plant are explained. The listing also includes fascinating rituals, spells, potions and practices that you can perform with each plant. What is especially pleasing is the message that there is no wrong or right way to practise plant witchery, it comes down to whatever feels ‘natural’ to you. 368pp, 178 x 229 mm, Hardback, 2020, RRP £21.99

BOOK REVIEWS – Oracle Cards & Tarot THE WITCHES’ WISDOM TAROT by Phyllis Curott and Danielle Barlow

This is a stunning new interpretation of the classical tarot, which focuses on the four elements of Earth, Water, Fire and Air. The cards draw inspiration from the power of the land and the animals and spirits which inhabit it. Instead of the traditional court-cards of the Minor Arcana, we here get “Messenger”, “Witch”, “Craftsman” and “Goddess” of the four elements. Each card is beautifully painted, filled with mysterious and sacred meaning. The Major Arcana is more centred on shamanic and wiccan nature-worship. These cards are perhaps even more powerful and symbolic, as they speak of the relationship between humanity and Mother Earth, in a truly magical manner. The deck also comes with a comprehensive guidebook and an eco-friendly hessian bag. 176pp, 78 cards, Boxed Set, 2020, RRP £31.99

This is the third card deck by the prolific and bestselling Kyle Gray, who is quickly establishing himself as the world’s leading angel teacher. There are 44 cards and, instead of focusing on named angels from different traditions, the deck portrays stunning guardian angels which are classified by the quality they bring to bear, giving us the opportunity for a much wider interpretation. All in all, the deck is trying to encourage us to connect with our own angels and feel the support and the energy that they can bring us. They are always there and guiding us – we just need to recognize the signs in the midst of all the chaos. Even just contemplating these transformative pictures will give us a spiritual boost, and Kyle also gives guidance on how to read for other people.

GODDESS POWER ORACLE CARDS by Colette Baron-Reid

Caroline first started encountering dragons in 2005. They are multidimensional beings that work with our guardian angels to create a new phase in the earth’s spiritual awakening. This deck portrays 33 dragons which are depicted as creatures in various metallic and jewel-like colours, brightly-lit and fierce. There are four clans of dragon: Earth Walk, Galactic, Grand Master and Guardian. They have names like Orbran, the Avebury Matriarch and Grace. We can use the cards and then the booklet to connect with the dragon that is best for us and that energy will guide and accompany us on our spiritual path. You can also use a card for daily guidance, or place them in spreads (guidance is given) to help you plan or get a sense of the week, month or year ahead.

POEMS TO MAKE THE SOUL SING POEMS TO MAKE THE SOUL SING by Alan Jacobs (ED)

FROM LINES COMPOSED A FEW MILES ABOVE TINTERN ABBEY by William Wordsworth For I have learned To look on nature, not as in the hour Of thoughtless youth; but hearing oftentimes The still, sad music of humanity, Nor harsh nor grating, though of ample power To chasten and subdue. And I have felt A presence that disturbs me with the joy Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime Of something far more deeply interfused, Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns, And the round ocean and the living air, And the blue sky, and in the mind of man: A motion and a spirit, that impels All thinking things, all objects of all thought, And rolls through all things. Therefore am I still A lover of the meadows and the woods, And mountains; and of all that we behold From this green earth; of all the mighty world Of eye, and ear, - both what they half create, And what perceive; well pleased to recognize In nature and the language of the sense, The anchor of my purest thoughts, the nurse, The guide, the guardian of my heart, and soul Of all my moral being.

One of the main traits of mysticism is often considered to be that it deals with approaching that which is incomprehensible and beyond language. Paradoxically though, some of the greatest mystics have also being some of the greatest poets, as they have tried their best to express something which essentially transcends words altogether. This is a wonderful collection of mystical poetry ranging from antiquity to modern authors, where we get a deep insight into how various sages have chosen to depict their transcendental experiences. Included are the words of great mystics like Rumi, Blake and Kabir, as well as excerpts from the Gnostic Gospels and ancient Eastern philosophy. Although this anthology is truly vast in scope, it is really inspiring to see how there is so many similarities to be found in the various texts and their content. 227pp, 135 x 191, Hardback, 2020, RRP £12.99

❖ Code: 300360 ❖ Non-Member Price: £8.87 ❖ Member Price: £7.99

Editor’s Note: I wanted to chose something different or unfamiliar from this collection to include in the magazine, but actually this famous poem is so good and so apposite that it would just be strange to turn it down because it’s famous. I realise also that there is a nature theme running through this Review, and nature – life in general and in all its forms – is the most important thing and always will be.

THE DRUIDIC ART OF DIVINATION by Jon G. Hughes

In ancient times, the druids were expected to be able to inform their community with crucial information about future events by means of divination. They would look for signs and oracles in nature in order to predict the best time for instance to plant and harvest crops and more generally to align themselves with the natural flow of the world around them. In this book Jon Hughes delves deep into the subject of pre-Celtic divination, where he dispels a lot of modern myths and introduces these ancient practices in a new light. We learn how to divine with staves, water and slate scrying, and how to develop the druidic skills of mediumship and prophecy. Hughes himself is a fourth generation Welsh druid, and bases most the material in this book on his own practices and the oral tradition of his forefathers. 288pp, 152 x 227 mm, Paperback, 2020, RRP £14.99

UNCOVERING THE SECRETS OF TIME AND NUMBER by Wolfgang Held

This is a really fascinating read about the philosophical ideas relating to humanity’s relationship with time and number. Author Wolfgang Held discusses in a poetic and inspiring way the intricate wonders of how we measure our world and its movement. He touches on the rhythm of the weeks, the turning of the seasons and how these correspond with the inner flow of our minds and the ageing of our bodies. He also dives deep into the world of numbers and numerology, investigating how much of our understanding of the universe is naturally linked to counting. This is a book rich in philosophical depth, full of interesting facts and wonderful musings on the great relationship between the micro- and macro-cosmos. 160pp, 129 x 198 mm, Paperback, 2020, RRP £14.99

MAGIC IN THE LANDSCAPE by Nigel Pennick

Having written dozens of books on folk magic, paganism and folklore, Nigel Pennick remains one of the best informed writers on these subjects. This book guides us through the British pre-industrial landscape, and reveals the customs and philosophy of how our ancestors oriented in it. This was a world which was still enchanted and inhabited by spirits of the land and the farm, and mankind was not yet seen as “outside” or “above” nature, but as partaker in it. Before the rise of urban modernity, humans envisioned the world as a souled macro-cosmos and themselves as reflections of this whole, and structured their lives in accordance with the movement of its cycles. This book gives us a glimpse both of what we have lost, but also what we can regain by recognising the sacredness of nature. 176pp, 153 x 227 mm, Paperback, 2020, RRP £14.99

YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS BRAIN CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE by Mike Dow

THE MINDFLOW METHOD by Tom Moegele

YOUR SYMPHONY OF SELVES by James Fadiman and Jordan Gruber

Dr Mike Dow has spent his life gathering the data and cuttingedge research to create his transformative programme called Subconscious Visualization Technique (SVT). In this book, you will see that with the proper technique, you can train your subconscious brain to improve your health. Beginning with cognitive behavioural therapy and incorporating everything from mindfulness and guided visualization to bilateral stimulation of the brain and body, Dr Dow will guide you through the steps to connect to your subconscious in order to help you access memories, improve digestion, boost your immune system, and even treat chronic pain.

The method described in this book is based on a practice of “not-wanting” and “non-doing”. Essentially, this means that we tend to spend too much energy on problems and irritations, which actually could be resolved by acceptance and simply letting go. This energy is shut up and contained in our physical and subtle bodies, and may cause all sorts of issues as the natural flow is hindered from moving freely. The Mindflow Method is about finding ways to overcome these blockages and transmute frustrations into a source of power and well-being. This training is not about forcing or adding anything to what is already there naturally, but rather to relax and “go with the flow”.

Author Ben Alridge had never thought that the mind could never be the cause of physical reactions, but after experiencing a panic attack, he soon realized that what actually matters to our well-being the most is our fundamental outlook on life. On his course to rehabilitation he discovered the ancient philosophy of Stoicism, and their creed that “the only thing you have control over is how you respond to external events”. We learn how to remain calm and accepting in stressful and hard times, and how moving outside of our comfort zones and living life to the fullest can be the best (and most fun) way to overcome our fears and anxieties.

The idea that we are composed of a number of various selves perhaps sounds somewhat strange, yet it is a notion which goes back thousands of years. For instance, have you ever had an argument with yourself, caused a part of yourself problems, or even disliked a part of yourself? The authors of this fascinating book show how many of our psychological issues might have their root in an inbalance between our various parts. Instead of fighting and creating friction between our selves, we should instead make friends and grow to love them; and rather than chasing after different goals, we should work together as a single harmonious team.

THE MAP OF CONSCIOUSNESS EXPLAINED by David Hawkins

David Hawkins’ work on mapping human emotions and how they fit within a higher scheme of cosmic consciousness and spiritual truth is well known and he wrote several seminal books on the subject. This book can be thought of as both a great introduction for those previously unaware of his work as well as a text for long-time students who are looking to get a proper overview of his vast body of texts. Here you will be able to read how Hawkins came to create this Map of Consciousness, and how it actually works and can be explored in practice. The final part of the book includes material on the more refined aspects of the map and how it can be utilized to make humanity evolve into a higher state of consciousness. 328pp, 152 x 229 mm, Paperback, 2020, RRP £13.99

EXHAUSTED by Nick Polizzi and Pedram Shojai

The main reason why most of us end up feeling sluggish is simply because we have run out of energy. It might have been stolen by stress, or we might not have got enough sleep the night before, or we have not have refuelled with a proper diet. In this book we learn how to rebalance our natural energy levels, making us less prone to feel depleted. The authors are both practitioners of traditional Asian medicine, and instead of offering quick fixes, they offer us holistic, long-term solutions which cover all areas of life. We learn to take care of our bodies by eating right and working out and to look after our inner world with the help of meditation and spiritual exercises. 240pp, 152 x 229 mm, Hardback, 2020, RRP £20.99

Shelley has been a professional past life regression therapist for 20 years. She was inspired to write this book because of the behaviour of two of her cats, one of which loved Vedic chanting and the other the Gregorian chanting of Benedictine Monks. The book is packed full of case studies where clients explored their past lives and found connections with their current pets, because of course souls can incarnate as both humans and animals. It also contains many exercises, including some that will help with the crushing grief of losing a pet and others that take you on journeys into past lives. It’s a charming book and very straight forward as many from Llewellyn are. Ultimately, as the author writes, “My hope is that this book gives you cause to smile at the blessing animals are in your life”. ❖ Code: 300325❖ Non-Member Price £11.10 ❖ Member Price: £9.99

We have carried several books already about the special bond between horse and human but this is the first book – as far as I know – to explore the spiritual/esoteric aspects of this relationship. We know that the horse is a sacred animal and has been for centuries – just see the White Horse at Uffington for example. This book covers everything you would need to know about horse spirit. Written by a pagan whose soul mate is a “spectacular” gelding called Penn, it covers horse history and mythology, exercises to strengthen your bond with horses and practical advice on how to choose the best horse for you, should you wish to draw one closer into your life. Full of heart-warming stories and well-researched insights, it’s ideal for any horse lover with a spiritual inclination. ❖ Code: 300327 ❖ Non-Member Price £13.88 ❖ Member Price: £12.50

This wonderful full-colour book is ideal for the spiritual seeker who wants to explore the area around them or is going to a new place and wants to know the best locations to visit nearby. It includes an introduction by journalist and author Sir Simon Jenkins, expert on Britain’s churches and cathedrals. It covers England, Wales and Scotland in great detail county by county, and also includes all the traditional pilgrimage routes on this island. Sites include churches, cathedrals, ruins, wells, stones and crosses. The text is descriptive and enthusiastic and directions to each site are comprehensive. It’s such an attractive book with such great colour photographs that I would happily read it, even if I had no intention of travelling anywhere. ❖ Code: 300324 ❖ Non-Member Price: £16.11 ❖ Member Price: £14.50

It’s not always easy to live up to all the ideals of environmental sustainability that we have these days. Even though we all like to think we do our small share to help Mother Earth, it almost seems like we’re just “changing light bulbs on the Titanic” as author Isabel Losada calls it. However, although this book deals with a somewhat gloomy subject, it is actually written from a very uplifting and humorous angle, which inspires us to take on a more optimistic outlook on the state of the world. Isabel talks about her own search for a more sustainable lifestyle, and does not exclude her own shortcomings and how the quest for a better future can be all but easy. Packed with hilarious anecdotes and great tips, this book will both make you laugh as well as make you feel more optimistic about the future. ❖ Code: 300353 ❖ Non-Member Price: £8.87 ❖ Member Price: £7.99

As the glaciers are melting, the rainforests are on fire and we are facing a pandemic crisis, it’s understandable that many of us feel rather anxious about the current state of the world. But is individual panic and stress really the best way? Psychoanalyst Anouchka Grose recognises that it might actually be counter-productive to put all the blame on the individual, as this will only cause us a personal sense of guilt and helplessness where we ultimately have little control. She explores the psychological nature of anxiety and shows how we would benefit from keeping ourselves a bit calmer and clear-minded, both on a personal as well as global level. We are all in this mess together, and as such we need to share the load. This is an optimistic read, with a healthy dose of humour, which makes it easier to focus on the solutions instead of the problems. ❖ Code: 300355 ❖ Non-Member Price: £8.87 ❖ Member Price: £7.99

Derek Gow is a farmer and conservationist who was born in Dundee. He is an indefatigable fighter for animals and especially the native mammals of this island. And make no mistake beavers used to be native and are tremendously beneficial to the environment. He is currently working on reintroducing the wildcat. It’s a fun account, full of riotous stories of the author against the establishment. It’s inspiring and encouraging, which is great to read. Since the 1990s he has imported, quarantined and assisted the reestablishment of beavers in waterways across England and Scotland. And it’s an easy read too. It includes a foreword by Isabella Tree who wrote Wilding. ❖ Code: 300343 ❖ Non-Member Price £16.11 ❖ Member Price: £14.50

This is a really nice book for young people or people of any age who want to introduce a bit of magic in their lives. It’s a bright and energetic guide to creating a positive mindset that will help you manifest wealth of every kind in your life, and that of course doesn’t always mean money. Her tribe is women like Gabrielle Bernstein and Yasmin Boland, author of Moonology; she’s a Youtube star but the book is very much grounded in spiritual principles. Her main abundance guide is The Law of Attraction and this is very much a contemporary take on that. The book presents a 33-day programme of daily challenges which could transform your life and help you redefine what wealth truly means to you. ❖ Code: 300356 ❖ Non-Member Price: £8.87 ❖ Member Price: £7.99

There are a lot of books out there with methods for getting rich, which teach you how to use your thoughts and will-power to acquire success and money. This book however is very different. Spiritual teacher Tosha Silver instead wants us to really contemplate our relationship with money, and how it most times just leads us into states of stress, egoism and dependency. By continuously focusing on money, we create an infected bond to it, and end up either becoming greedy or overburdened by the need to look over our finances. Her advice is instead to give up our common egoistic view in favour of giving, offering and letting go. By not seeking to possess economic wealth, but rather becoming willing to give it all up, we become free of our unhealthy attachment to it. ❖ Code: 300317 ❖ Non-Member Price: £8.87 ❖ Member Price: £7.99

Jason Gregory’s latest book is a blend of inspirational personal development and a look at the ancient sages and how they interacted with the world. Having spent as much time as he does studying the ways and philosophies of ancient cultures he is able to bring a single-minded purpose into harnessing the wisdom of the past. In simple and clear terms, he covers four habits that we can all cultivate to tap into the most productive and “at peace” version of ourselves. Taking us through history and showing us the cognitive science behind these approaches, this is a well thought-out guide to self-improvement. We can use the perennial wisdom of the East – especially the Zen and Taoist traditions – not only to achieve mental fitness, but also physical fitness. 208pp, 152 x 227 mm, Paperback, 2020, RRP £12.99

Various – BOOK REVIEWS RETREAT by Matthew Ingram

This is a fascinating and enjoyable account of the counterculture from its origins in the fifties through into the seventies. It focuses on wellness and how the hippies developed the whole concept of self-care. It’s dispassionate but sympathetic and always entertaining and it covers Ram Dass, Abraham Maslow, Carl Jung, Swami Vivekenanda and Chogyam Trungpa, amongst a cast of hundreds. I learned a lot from reading it and discovered completely new connections across one of the most important periods in recent history. It also sheds light on current aspects of the spiritual movement and again there is much that’s new to discover through these comparisons.

STANDING ON MY BROTHER’S SHOULDERS by Tara Lal

This is a new edition of the at once heartbreaking and deeply inspiring story about Tara and her brother Adam who sadly came to end his own life when she was 17. Tara recounts the underlying issues of her family, involving the mental illness of her father which worsened after her mother’s death, and subsequently also came to affect her brother. After his death, Tara eventually comes to terms with her grief and is able to draw strength and inspiration from her brother’s spiritual writing. This is a very powerful read which deals with both the highly important topics of mental illness and suicide, as well as that of bereavement and how we might find light in even the darkest of times.

THE ESSENTIAL PATH by Neale Donald Walsh

Known for his popular books on modern psychology and practical spirituality, here the author sends out a challenge to each of us to examine who we are and how we choose to live our lives. The state of our planet and our collective view of humanity is directing our future. If this future looks less than satisfactory the answer is to change our beliefs and so create a better future. The problem is that most people don’t understand this problem and think it is caused by others, which leads to social alienation. It is time to ask if there is something we don’t understand, the one thing that would change everything. By offering information about what’s going on and suggestions on how to experience the possibility of change, there is hope that we can become awakened and so begin to reverse our unhelpful choices. 128pp, 127 x 190 mm, Hardback, 2019, RRP £9.99

The programme of republishing the most popular of Colin Wilson’s non-fiction titles continues with Mysteries, the 1978 sequel to his ground-breaking The Occult. Here he analyses the work of all the greats of research into all that’s enigmatic and he includes many paranormal accounts and historical anecdotes. He also talks about his own experience of visions and of panic attacks, of dowsing in the Merry Maidens stone circle and of having visions. As ever it’s an extremely readable account but the science is strong and the message of the book is optimistic and encouraging. We are capable of so much more than we know and here is the evidence. 672pp, 138 x 215 mm, Paperback, 2020, RRP £20.00

THE RETURN OF HOLY RUSSIA by Gary Lachman

The Return of Holy Russia presents us with a new history of that vast territory which looks specifically at the tug of mystical influences and how that shapes not only Russia but also its place on the world stage. Gary Lachman is an expert on this subject, having already written books about Madame Blavatsky and PD Ouspensky, and here he deals with the counter pulls between Eastern and Western civilization as well as Russia’s own spiritual history of Slavic Paganism. Finally we also learn about the involvement of mysticism in the currents in modern-day Russia and how Putin is influenced by figures like Berdayev and Solovyov. This is in equal part a thoughtful academic look as well as a compelling thesis on how to understand Russian spiritual philosophies. 344pp, 161 x 237 mm, Hardback, 2020, RRP £25.00
