NEW CANDLELIGHT CINEMA FILM: WALKING THE CAMINO DVD

Geoff Napier Dear Friends, Have you ever noticed that, when you start a new venture, it can get buried in the details of the day-to-day? For my part, I am excited to be reinventing Cygnus with your help and the skills of the entire Watkins team. I am so looking forward to travelling and meeting more of you at your local Cygnus Café gatherings to hear and see where you are in your own souls’ journeys, and to connect you all together through the Cygnus database. Isn’t it curious though, that before I can really focus full-time on the new vision for Cygnus, I am having to spend so much time shutting down the form and structure of the Cygnus that Ann and I created 25 years ago?

How does your intuition speak to you? conditioning of our childhoods. It seems silly now, but we did our utmost and always believed that we had to do it on our own, without asking inwardly for help throughout the day. It has therefore come as a major surprise to me that each time I have a decision to make I can go within and ask which option serves the highest good. There is no rationing! This is a great change, and in fact it still hasn’t become second nature for me, for I have discovered deeper levels of conditioning within me, demanding that I should be independent and stand on my own two feet. I still catch myself feeling that my own matters are my own responsibility, because surely the universe has bigger fish to fry. I can see now that this is ridiculous, really. We are all one. So how can one part operate separately from the All, without slipping out of the flow?

heart. Sometimes it feels a little odd, or out of balance, at others it feels absolutely right. Sometimes I haven’t a clue whether I am in the flow or not. It’s a bit like listening for a strange new bird to sing in the woods but, having never heard it before, I am not sure what to listen out for. I am learning that when I cannot interpret the feeling I need to ask in a different way until it becomes clear. This process is teaching me to use my intuition. Up until now my intuition seemed very inconsistent so I didn’t feel safe using it. Now I am learning that it is everything, it’s our connection to the “All”, and in fact is just what we need to flow through life successfully. Ann and I used to try to control everything we could so as to ensure our plans were successful. Now, as I learn to surrender to the unknown processes in my life, I know that the highest good will

“Intuition is like satnav for the soul, your next step flashes up on the screen for you to use or not, the choice is yours.” This week we are actually dismantling the Cygnus space, joist by joist, because the new occupants do not want upstairs offices, just warehouse space. Soon nothing at all will be left of the Cygnus offices in Llandeilo, apart from memories, good friends and the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of Cygnus parcels have been successfully despatched to you all around the globe. Ann was always looking to keep Cygnus in the flow, and in the last few years of her life we were increasingly aware that Cygnus was out of balance. While I have been occupied in the greatest declutter of my life, I have been asking what can we learn from all this? Why did our lives get so out of balance? Well, I have learned something huge. We dedicated Cygnus to helping those who felt themselves to be on a spiritual path but uncomfortable about committing to a fixed doctrine, to give them inspiring information and reminders that they were not alone. But we ourselves carried on as if we were on our own! I now realise that the universe never intended us to do everything solely out of our own strength, contrary to the enduring beliefs of the protestant ethical

I am currently endeavouring to bring myself back into flow as soon as I become aware that I have lost my inner balance once again. This seems to be a process of me learning that the universe has everything in hand, and that my only role is to ask and then to trust. How do I do this? Well, at present, because I am still learning, it goes like this: I make my plans, do my sums or research, and then, the trickiest part, I listen to the voice of my

happen. My new role is to ask that the highest good comes out of every situation, for all concerned, naturally, without forcing or exerting my willpower. I am awestruck by how simple the process actually is. It’s a knack, a new way of looking at the same old situations. When it becomes second nature to ask your heart, your intuition, life becomes far less complicated. It’s more like satnav for the soul. Who needs to know all the calculations going on behind the screen? For instance, the Cygnus Café network just arrived in my lap with no planning or forethought, yet it has caught your imagination and meets a real need for a new type of gathering that operates without the need for beliefs or dogmas and requires no structures or agendas. In my heart I know this serves the highest good and the strength of your enthusiastic response is proof enough. I must tell you though, that at the beginning I was busily making plans to structure and organise it because I was convinced that “people would be disorientated without a little structure here and a few rules there”. At one stage I was happily writing a manual of how to run a Cygnus Cafe. How wrong I was, for now I can see that the groups that meet without structure are open to

the universal flow in unimagined ways. Over the coming months we will be exploring other new opportunities open to us since we can now draw on the Watkins team and their skills. I can already share with you two new events that I could not possibly have done on my own on the Cygnus Community Page (11). In this issue Adam Gordon and I have discovered a great range of titles, from well-known authors to totally new authors. Katrina Love Senn offers us a practical and fresh approach to dieting, to see it as a healing journey. A great many Cygnus members are discovering that what seems like a world falling apart or mental breakdown is actually an opportunity for a spiritual breakthrough. Katie Mottram’s book Mend the Gap approaches this most important of issues. I’ve come across a number of members who have experienced really harrowing times, only to discover later for a lack of understanding from doctors and family that they were not mentally ill; they were just having a “chrysalis-time”, an inner transformation, where compassion, nurturing and understanding are the best medicine.

We have a fabulous selection of films for you to share with your friends and family or even local community under the banner of the Cygnus Candlelight Cinema on page 14. You will find the titles to help you develop your intuition, and the intuition of others to bring your awareness

into the present moment, which of course is where it all happens! With love from us all at the CygnusWatkins team, Geoff, Adam, Jordan and Vicky & co!

These beautiful books have been created by Souvenir Press to celebrate the love poetry of two beloved spiritual teachers: Jelalaldin Rumi and Khalil Gibran. Selections from their works are placed opposite beautiful Arabic calligraphy by the Tunisian artist Lassaâd Métoui, single words or phrases which complement the short poem or extract opposite. These would make excellent presents for a spiritually inclined friend – the packaging enhances the content beautifully and everything comes together to put the well-chosen words into an attractive context. Love Letters in the Sand includes extracts from many of Khalil Gibran’s works, including The Prophet, and they embody his love of beauty and insight into the mystery of the heart. Love: The Joy that Wounds likewise comes from across the great Sufi’s body of work, and offers comfort and inspiration on the joys of the spiritual life. It also includes a preface by the great French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière.

Title Kindling the Native Spirit

Coming Home My passion for exploring my own native soul ignited an odyssey that took me to various places around the globe. I met and studied with many remarkable teachers from whom I gleaned much of the wisdom that I’m sharing in these pages. My first teacher was named Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona. She was a recognized kahuna lapa’au (traditional Hawaiian healer) and was eventually called a living treasure of Hawaii. I was 19 years old and living on Oahu (where my younger sister had moved before me) when I met her. I wasn’t looking for a teacher at the time, but as the saying goes, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” I’d never had a massage, but I’d heard it could be relaxing, so I flipped open the Yellow Pages (which had hundreds of massage listings), and I randomly picked a name and made an appointment. The massage studio was in Waikiki, in a basement spa located in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. I was sitting in the waiting room when the door opened and the masseuse — a robust, gracious Hawaiian woman — stepped forward. Upon seeing her, I burst into tears. I didn’t know what was happening or why I couldn’t stop crying,

but I felt like I had come home. It was such an overwhelming experience that I wanted to drop everything in my life and learn from her. (This was a big leap, since in those days if a young woman said she did massage, most people thought she was a prostitute. To obtain a massage license, all you needed to do was be fingerprinted, register with the vice squad, and get a syphilis test. That was it. But what people might think of me didn’t matter. I wanted to learn from Morrnah.) For months I begged her to teach me, and she always said no until one day she found out that I was of Cherokee heritage. She said, “Ah, then you will understand the old ways.” (I have since learned, however, that kindling the native spirit depends more on your heart than your blood, but for Morrnah my heritage was important.) And thus began my training. She taught me massage, and I worked with her in the same spa. During our time together, she taught me about the ancient Hawaiian ways of healing, herbal medicine, and even about the “little people” (the elf-like m enehunes) and earth spirits. She also taught me how to unblock stuck energy, enlist the help of ancestors, release earth-bound spirits, clear possessions of stagnant energies, help

Katrina Love Senn From breakdown to breakthrough. I loved food about as much as I hated exercise. I had spent the majority of my teenage years battling with my body and selfimage. By the time I had turned 20, I was already 60 pounds overweight. My unsuccessful dieting attempts left me feeling frustrated, confused and uncertain about myself. Low energy and daily doses of depression became a regular part of my day-to-day existence. Being a highly sensitive soul, I felt the pain of everyone and everything. I tried my best to deal with my emotions and perceived inadequacies by squashing them down with food. While I carried on with the very private struggle with my weight, I couldn’t help but feel that I was missing out on all the amazing things that normal skinny girls had. I wondered what it would be like to be in a loving relationship, with a partner who could see beyond my extra layers and love and cherish me for who I was. I also wanted to know what it would be like to move my body freely, to dance and be able to wear whatever I wanted to. I spent countless hours lamenting over what I thought were the big unanswered questions of my life. Questions I would repeatedly ask myself included: “Why am I so fat?”, “Is it just because I am big boned?”, “Why aren’t any of my friends fat?” and “What’s wrong with me?” And then one day my body completely broke down. I was overseas attending a university conference when my body just collapsed. I was rushed back home on the first available flight. My doctor ordered me to undergo urgent and extensive medical testing. I spent the next couple of months bedridden, sleeping for days on end, waking only to be spoon-fed by my mother. When my test results came back, they indicated that I had a major glucose imbalance, a thyroid disorder, and adrenal exhaustion amongst other things. Despite this, my doctor said that it was difficult to pinpoint exactly what was “wrong” with me. I was told that these diseases were “incurable” and that it was in my best interest to commence a programme of experimental medication. When I asked how long I would have to take the medicine for, she responded “possibly for

The healing journey to losing weight life”. Alarm bells immediately began to ring. After many years of taking prescription drugs and steroids for asthma, I was already disillusioned with modern medicine. Starting my healing journey. After careful consideration, I decided to follow my intuition and set off on my own healing journey. I have to admit that I was pretty scared. This was all new to me and I felt way out of my depth. I had never done anything like this before. I realised that all I could really do was take a deep breath and step powerfully into the healing process. I began by turning my focus away from dieting, deprivation and portion control, and towards creating health, healing and wellness. I started reading books on healing and also consulted with a number of natural health practitioners, including a naturopath, who taught me about the healing powers of food, nutrition and herbs. And then an incredible thing happened. After just a couple of months my naturopath noted that not only was my body healing itself, but I was also starting to shed my excess weight. Inspired by my initial results I continued to pursue my natural health and healing goals. Within 12 months, a medical report confirmed what I already knew; I was in a

state of excellent health, with normal blood sugar levels and healthy functioning organs including my liver, kidneys, thyroid and adrenal glands. A second medical report a few years later pronounced me 100% asthma free. That was a special day in my life! My weight continued to fall off. I ended up losing over 60 pounds of excess body weight and have successfully kept it off for over 15 years now. I achieved all of these long-lasting results with no medications, drugs, deprivation, harmful side effects, counting calories, weighing food, portion control or surgery. I later began teaching yoga and started to share with other women what I had learnt about healing my life. One day a student came up to me and suggested that I should write a book sharing all the things that I had learnt on my own healing journey. She was convinced that it would help women all over the world to heal and transform their lives for the better. Inspired by my student’s request, I started writing my first book called, Losing Weight is a Healing Journey, in which I outlined the 3 key phases of the weight loss healing journey. These are: Phase 1: Heal your body. Phase 2: Heal your mind. Phase 3: Heal your emotions. Being sick, fat, and tired was one of the biggest challenges of my life. I now know that it was also my biggest opportunity to learn and grow so that I could finally create the life that I truly dreamed of.

LOSING WEIGHT IS A HEALING JOURNEY by Katrina Love Senn Just short of her twentieth birthday Katrina Love Senn was overweight and fixated on her own unhappiness, and she went on to have a complete body breakdown, which led to her spending a couple of months in bed. From that moment on she took responsibility for her own healing and started her recovery based on guidance from her intuition. It can be hard to translate one’s own story into a book to help others –and after all, allegedly 95% of diets fail – but this carries the energy and distinctiveness of being selfpublished, which genuinely sets it apart. That dynamism starts with the magnetic author picture on the cover and continues through the text, which is full of first person experiences alongside charts and other invaluable scientific information. The thrust of the book – weight-loss through self-transformation – is not unusual, but it helps so much to be carried along by the sheer enthusiasm and joy in life that Katrina transmits. 240pp, 212 x 135mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £11.95

New Insights Into Health & Consciousness THE MEDICINAL CHEF: DIGESTION by Dale Pinnock

COCONUT OIL by Lucy Bee

The gut and the digestive system in general have become popular subjects in recent years, and Cygnus has been on the lookout for a good book on how to apply sound principles to daily living, especially cooking and eating. And this is one we like. The author has degrees in human nutrition and herbal medicine and has also worked as a chef. It’s a chunky but colourful hardback full of simple, not-always-vegetarian recipes. The first half of the book gives all the facts and tips about digestive issues, and the second half has the recipes, themed according to the particular challenge you might be facing. They include tuna steak with herbed bean salad; chicken, red pepper and olive tray bake; and aubergine layer bake. Every recipe is simple and quick to prepare, and uses easy-to-find ingredients. 264pp, 213 x 137mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £14.99

There’s been a lot of new information recently about oils in cooking and in nutrition in general, and they are now no longer the bane of all our attempts at healthy living. Olive oil has been much written about but coconut oil is relatively new to the scene. This is the first mainstream and commercial book published on the subject in this country. Not only is it attractive and inspiring, but it is also packed full of over 100 recipes, which range from smoothies to cakes, to main courses. And coconut oil can also be used as a beauty product! The book is produced by a brand of coconut oil (Lucy Bee) so the marketing angle can become a bit tiresome, but relatively speaking that’s a minor quibble. The book looks great and also includes all sorts of extra nutritional information which really is going that extra mile. Every recipe is also marked for whether it’s gluten-free, dairy-free, etc. 112pp, 178 x 175mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £15

THE BONE BROTH SECRET by Louise Hay and Heather Dane There is one vegan recipe but even that is treated as preparation for the meat-based broths – for this book to be of benefit you really do have to be a meat-eater! However it does use the bones, and they are parts of the animal that most people discard. Beyond that, this book is a delight. The colour photographs look great and it’s just such a blessing to have a healthy cookery book with such an active contribution from Louise Hay. I must confess, I feel positive just looking at her. In age she is getting close to ninety, but in the many pictures of her and her co-author Heather Dane she just looks so radiant and vibrant. There is something very comforting about broths and the authors also provide affirmations to be used in conjunction with consuming them, depending on the particular healing process you might be undergoing. 304pp, 235 x 157mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £12.99

AFTER CANCER CARE by Gerald M Lemole, Pallav K Mehta, Dwight L McKee Cancer is a terrible disease and you might have been through hell to get to a position where the primary treatment is over and you can start to focus more on recovery. Now though, with that intensity having passed, you might find it harder to get attention from medical staff and harder to find out what is really needed to get you started on the path of rebuilding yourself. This book forms the ideal introduction on how to become more than a passive survivor, and an active participant in a more robust and healthy life. The three authors have more than three decades of experience in post-cancer care between them, and they can mine a rich vein of experience to give you the best tips in diet, exercise and creating a conducive environment. There are statistics that claim that around 95% of cancer survivors are left to their own devices once initial treatment has ended. Together they give advice on how to apply each revelation to our own lives. They cover simple yet powerful things like making connections, faithfulness, and positivity, and also look at practical issues such as healthy and toxic foods and stress management. 304pp, 235 x 157mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £12.99

Katie Mottram It’s time for a new paradigm of understanding about spiritual experiences in the Western world Dreaming and dying When I was a child I was obsessed with the book Utopia. I felt weird. I didn’t fit in. I could envisage a world where people lived in a state of love and harmony, but all around me it was the opposite and people were telling me I was a naïve dreamer. Everything seemed false to me. My selfconfidence plummeted further and further to the ground, until I did too. Playing the victim role I know what it feels like to watch my mother stretchered onto a psychiatric ward after having attempted to stab herself in the heart. I know that this can be the horrific consequence of too many years of having to repress one’s beliefs, experiences and emotions. I know what it’s like to have joined the mental health profession to try to protect myself from that same consequence. I know what it’s like to be too afraid to admit vulnerability, or anything a bit “outof-the-ordinary”, especially in a system where, ironically, even the “professionals” are too afraid to talk about natural human emotions. I know what it feels like to become so ashamed of yourself and your profession, that it leads you to want to take your own life. I know what it feels like to fall victim to my past and allow it to almost destroy me. Rising strong Thankfully, I also know how it feels to choose to change my perception of my situation; to surrender, to love ALL life experiences, not to label them as “good” or “bad”, but to see them all as equally significant and as potential for deep learning. I know the relief to be gained by finally talking about my own repressed emotions, daring to let down my defences, and connecting deeply with others who have dared to do the same. I know how it feels to sit with a group of dedicated, brave mental health innovators at the end of a year’s Peersupported Open Dialogue (POD) training and cry happy tears of gratitude that things are finally starting to change – that common sense is finally starting to prevail.

Mental Crisis or Spiritual Breakthrough? I know how it is to feel so passionate about changing the mental health system that the incapacitating fear I’d have once felt about speaking out about my own vulnerability actually makes me realise how strong being vulnerable can make you. This is my story; we all have a story, no more or less significant than another. The pain in our stories has the potential to give us great impetus to drive our passion and create the change that is so needed in the world. Spiritual awakening Thousands of people around the world are having spiritual experiences, waking up to a more expanded level of consciousness, and these experiences have the potential to catalyse a greater capacity to realise our collective human potential. They can also be extremely destabilising within our current cultural framework, resulting in a growing number of people undergoing mental health problems. A growing body of research shows us that having a non-pathological framework within which to understand anomalous experiences reduces the chance of a person going into crisis. Building Bridges This is hugely significant in a time of a global spiritual crisis, because it is the first time that psychiatry promises to support the human race in its journey through crisis, so that it can evolve, rather than repress the symptoms as signs of something being wrong. Another exciting bridging project that is forming is the International Spiritual Emergence Network (ISEN). ISEN aims to provide a central hub where all networks around the world which offer support to people going through spiritual crisis can connect, collaborate, educate and innovate in order to normalise the phenomenon. ISEN holds the vision of: “A world where all peoples of all cultures can embrace spiritual emergence to manifest a positive shift to higher consciousness for all humanity.” In an era where we are coming to understand that we are all infinitely interconnected, we are acknowledging a paradox of life to be true: alone we are nothing, but together we have the potential to be everything. There is immense power in passionate people. As Margaret Mead said: “Never

MEND THE GAP by Katie Mottram There is a growing body of work, which examines the traumatic aspects of the spiritual breakthrough. Sometimes, when our inner landscape is reconfiguring itself, it can feel like mental illness, but it’s not necessarily something that needs sedating and dampening down. Instead of that, we need the confidence to see it through, the support of those around us so that we won’t be stigmatised, and finally, a guide or a group of guides who know a bit about the issue and can give us pointers. This autobiographical account of the author’s own struggles is both an inspiration and a practical guide to the support networks available in this country. Her own mother suffered from depression so initially the signs weren’t good. However, she embarks on her own research and discovers that, rather than the onset of mental illness, spiritual crisis can actually be seen as a waking up to help a planet in crisis. 240pp, 212 x 135mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £11.99

believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all who ever have.” Imagine what more than a few caring people can all do when we unite together. Follow the news of POD and ISEN via Katie’s blog at: http:// synchronicityworldwide.com

Having thought that there were enough mindfulness titles, especially introductory ones, I have really appreciated the contribution this book makes. It’s packed full of drawings, diagrams and even colour photographs, and they make the journey of mindfulness attractive and enticing. The use of colour, the lay-out and the larger format all serve as a warm invitation to practise, to get on and just do it, because in the end practice is all that counts. There are, however, times when motivation can be weak and the mind can be straying elsewhere, and this book is inspiring in so many ways with exercises and anecdotes dotted around the text. It’s in the classic Dorling Kindersley style – giving us a new perspective on familiar things and opening processes up in a way that’s appealing and rejuvenating. This is an ideal resource for someone starting a mindfulness practice at home. 264pp, 213 x 137mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £12.99

Don’t be tempted to underestimate this book because it is small and modest in appearance. Within its pages lies an ocean of wisdom that we can all benefit from, whether experienced meditators or beginners on the path. We visit important cornerstone practices of Buddhism, such as Compassion Meditation and Mindfulness of Breathing. The clear messages are given in the form of simple images. Consider, for example, thinning the clouds of self interest so that the sun of compassion can shine on all, or contemplate how the jewel of joy, trapped in a block of ice, is always there to be revealed if the ice melts. By gently introducing the subtleties of mindfulness and compassion, this book is a true guide towards an awakened life. As the anonymous writer says: mindfulness and compassion are what our planet needs. 112pp, 178 x 175mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £8.99

THE MINDFULNESS KEY by Sarah Silverton I really like this book. The authors work at Bangor University in North Wales, and have been studying and laying on courses in practical mindfulness for a long time. They are not professional authors but academics, and the text reflects that with its patient, quiet confidence and unshowy style. You can read it quickly if you have to, but to me it rewards longer contemplation on the sharp and clear statements they use, and their straightforward and tried-and-tested plans. The foreword has been written by Jon Kabat-Zinn, the pioneering teacher who started this wave of mindfulness based stress reduction many years ago. They have been hosting him for workshops and stints of professional teaching for a long time so they know their stuff. These teachings come from a wise and experienced team of therapists. 304pp, 235 x 157mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £7.99

MINDFULNESS & THE ART OF DRAWING by Wendy Ann Greenhalgh Everyone can draw. Children draw instinctively, so why do we as adults think we can’t do it? Why don’t we just draw? When combined with the practice of mindfulness, drawing becomes a simple, low-tech and creative way to access moments of silence and tranquillity. Increased awareness of colour, light, shade and small detail brings a sense of being entirely in the present moment. There is even a section on self portraits, a gift of self, as a way to seek our own uniqueness. The author draws on her own experiences of drawing, from sketching to relieve the boredom of a long illness, to a career as a designer, to offer insights and exercises to help all of us tread the creative path to awareness. This book will have you reaching for your sketch pad. 320pp, 215 x 142mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £8.99

ZEN & THE PATH OF MINDFUL PARENTING by Clea Danaan Joyful parenting may sound like an impossible goal to mums and dads buried in the day-to-day slog of managing a family. But this isn’t another parenting manual, no guide to becoming a perfect parent or a tiger mum. It is a Hero’s Journey into finding yourself as a parent and experiencing stillness on a path of personal growth. Sounds impossible? You may be surprised. It offers interesting challenges, like noticing your mind’s resistance to a child’s whining and bad behaviour, like respecting feelings of anger, like bringing mindfulness to a fierce sense of attachment. It offers sound advice like learning to listen, nurturing ourselves as parents and remaining curious. And never forget to celebrate even the smallest things. An interesting and mindopening read for anyone raising children. 304pp, 235 x 157mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £8.99

Tori Hartman In the early 1980s I got caught up by the crest of the self-help wave. Once I found out that all my problems stemmed from my parents and it was their fault, I was elated; I was not crazy after all. But something was missing. Knowing why things weren’t my fault wasn’t enough. I spent years floundering, angry, and honestly resentful, because even though it wasn’t my “fault” I was miserable. I felt immobilised, and while I did accomplish quite a bit, there was always a lingering emptiness to it. I was out to prove something to myself and if only I achieved enough I would feel better. It never worked. I understood why things happened. I understood why I felt the way I did. On some level I even understood my parents’ actions. But I would soon find out that understanding why, or even knowing why, was the booby prize. Death Brings a New Life In 1985, I died and came back. Unbeknownst to me at the time after I went up to the light and decided to come back, I brought Angels back and they would soon speak to me. This journey that I was embarking on would be a thirty-year Odyssey and lead me from New York to California, and to Angel visitations where I was told fables that at the time made no sense to me. Why would anyone tell me strange colour based fables? While the more detailed story is in the actual Chakra Wisdom Cards and the Chakra Wisdom Oracle Toolkit, my point in telling you this is that I want you to become aware of a higher energetic in your

Connecting To Your Inner Wisdom life right now: Take a moment here in the middle of this article to breathe. Now begin to focus on the external energy that is surrounding you. I’d like you become aware that you are not alone. There’s a magical angelic energy with you right now. It occurs at the sense of higher purpose in the moment. This is one aspect of spiritual evolution. Now completely let that go. Allow yourself to step back into this article as you simply recognize your connection in this moment. Your Brain vs. Your Intuition Do you remember that I said knowing why is the booby prize? When we ask why, it is indicative of our brain trying to figure something out. Your intuition is like the unfolding of a rose. If we ran over to a rose that was a tight bud and pulled it open to see what was inside, all we’d get is destruction, and we would never know what it could become because we were looking for the wrong thing. How Does Your Intuition Speak? Cryptically is the one-word answer. The times when you are most confused is when your intuition is trying to speak to you, and your brain is overriding it to try and protect you. We spend so much time trying to figure things out when our intuition is constantly speaking to us. I have learned that the Chakra Wisdom Cards speak directly to our intuition. The Magic of Spiritual Evolution In my experience with the Chakra

CHAKRA WISDOM ORACLE TOOLKIT by Tori Hartman

Wisdom Cards, they evolved through community. The fables themselves were brought to me by angels and the spiritual tools that developed around them later were created with artists in mastermind groups. The true teaching of the fables is in the toolkit, which actually came out after the cards. But I refer to it as the prequel. In the Chakra Wisdom Oracle Toolkit, you will find the yearlong journey of a mastermind that was created in workshops. From Academy Award-winning artists to best-selling authors everyone who worked in those early groups realized their dreams. What I never found in self-help, I discovered through the Chakra Wisdom Oracle teachings - like Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers (from the Wizard of Oz), it was with me all along. I’d like to think I created it, but I truly didn’t. Like a child I delivered it, and I shepherded it. This chakra evolution is inside each and every one of us. The peace and courage I’ve discovered in working with this material for nearly thirty years has transformed my life. I encourage you to work with the toolkit and the cards and create your own Chakra revolution. I’m honoured to deliver this to you. © Tori Hartman, 2016

Cygnus cafés Title

Welcome to the Cygnus Community pages by Geoff Napier

Cygnus Co-Hosting the One World Summer Festival 1st - 7th August 2016 RUNNING BUSINESSES AS IF PEOPLE AND PLANET MATTERED Over the years we have featured books inspired by groups who are working along ethical lines, operating as if people rather than mere profits are more important. We were involved in a couple of Transition Town initiatives when we were based in Wales, and recently we have noticed the amazing response to the Crickhowell Fair Tax Campaign. This highlights the huge legal loopholes left for multinationals to drive through, so they “legally” need not pay most UK taxes. The Crickhowell group’s campaign began a couple of years ago when they decided to see if it was possible for normal businesses to use these tax loopholes as a way of bringing these practices out into the open. You might have seen the recent BBC programme about it (The Town That Took On The Taxman). Consequently, the campaigns to expose the practices of Google, Facebook and other multinationals have all gathered momentum as a result. We are aware of another David and Goliath campaign getting underway too. This is the campaign to make ecocide an internationally recognised crime just like genocide. Polly Higgins, an enviromental lawyer, has drafted legislation that can be used worldwide to end ecocide. At a stroke, this framework law changes the responsibilities of nations and corporations to stop and ask whether any law or business activity they are about to authorise is going to cause destruction to the earth or not. Ecolibrium Now supports the campaign for law on ecocide, which would create a level playing field so all consequential environmental costs are the responsibility of the polluter. Search for Polly Higgins’ Ted Talk to hear her speaking about what a law on ecocide could do. THAT’S THE WAY IT IS Most nations and multinationals don’t actually want to ruin our planet. It’s just that they exist within a framework of laws that seem to encourage them to. Multinationals are bound to maximise their profits - that is their primary obligation to their shareholders. The Law says so. One of the most efficient ways of saving money is to “externalise costs”. We all do it. Householders dump unrecyclable waste, holidaymakers go on cheap flights, mining and fracking companies leave waste products behind, nuclear power companies do not add the 100s of years of de-contamination costs to their electricity bills. These are all actions that do not include all consequential costs to the environment, mainly because if any one company did it first, they might soon go out of business. This law has the potential to change the balance, so everyone internalises their costs - together. Ecolibrium Now is a collaboration of many individuals to inspire and connect you to the idea of bringing equilibrium

to our environment and to raise funds to support the next phase of the Ecocide Campaign, which is to raise awareness of the ecocide law and to continue the task of translating it into many languages so that it can easily be adopted into the constitutions of countries worldwide. CHAT PAGE THEME Much of this issue has covered ways of accessing our intuition. Please share with us your stories of how you have been learning to listen to your intuition recently. CYGNUS DIRECTORY OF HOLISTIC EVENTS If you are organising other MBS events, conferences, or workshops around the UK in 2016, please contact us and we can discuss how we can invite Cygnus members to your event. CYGNUS COMMUNITY REFERENCE LIBRARY We are looking for a new home for the Cygnus Community Reference Library. Ideally this would be a holistic or retreat centre that has plenty of space.

FINDING JOE by Patrick Takaya Solomon With the help of 20 visionaries including Deepak Chopra, Gay Hendricks and Alan Cohen, Finding Joe explores how the hero’s journey unfolds in real people’s lives in the modern world. RRP: £17.99 Code: D220733 Cygnus Price: £14.99

The goal of the Cygnus Candlelight Cinemas initiative is to create and demonstrate a new demand for transformational films. Jean-Paul Martinez, a Cygnus member, knows many other filmakers like himself who are making Mind Body Spirit films. So he and his network are planning on developing an international network of 1000 informal cinemas in village halls, pubs and schools. These can be gathering spaces for all who want to see and share what is possible, to talk about the films afterwards and possibly even share a meal together.

OCCUPY LOVE by Velcrow Ripper An eye-opening film that is best watched in a group. It will inspire you to begin your own peaceful and life-changing revolution. Occupy Love captures the heart of the movement that has swept the planet in response to today’s economic and environmental crises. RRP: £17.99 Code: D250221 Cygnus Price: £14.99 THE FAIRY TRAIL by Till Gerhard and Britta Schmidtke The film investigates what indigenous cultures have always taken for granted: nature spirits. What is the core reality behind these stories and why are people still fascinated by these ephemeral beings? This film brings us into conversation with many all around the world whose very fabric of daily life is woven together with fairies. RRP: £17.99 Code: D250222 Cygnus Price: £14.99

The format is simple. A candle is lit to remind us that we are all part of one source, we all bear that light within us, either side of the screen. The host of the evening introduces the film by telling us a little about the filmmaker and what inspired them to make the film. We watch the film together and then afterwards bring our chairs into small groups and share what

This beautifully presented DVD reminds us how our thoughts and emotions affect our physical body. Against a background of easy-on-the-eye photography it features personal stories, scientific facts, and motivational speeches. The presenters are not afraid to make uncompromising statements such as ‘negative thinking can kill you’, but they also draw on their professional expertise to explain how to make the very best of the miraculous selfhealing body which we all possess, which we can all tap into, rather than blocking it with limiting thoughts. This is a powerful package, well worth taking on board whether you are healthy and want to remain so, or are currently in poor health. DVD: 2015, RRP £17.99

Author The Camino de Santiago

January and February make up a time of fresh starts. There are very few more drastic ways of doing this than by clearing at least a month from your diary and covering the 500 miles of tracks, paths, and roads that make up the legendary Camino de Santiago, which runs from St Jean Pied-de-Port in Basque France, to Santiago de Compostella in Galicia, the north-westernmost corner of Spain. Even though people have been taking this pilgrimage to visit the shrine of the Apostle James since early medieval times, it’s more popular now than it has been for decades, even in these supposedly godless times. These three products all reflect the Camino in different ways, and call us to consider making the literal pilgrimage ourselves, or to see our lives as pilgrimages along the invisible inner Camino of our own lives. As the New York Times says about this DVD Walking the Camino, “Viewer beware: The impulse to take a hike is strong”. Before I watched it, I was planning to walk the Camino at some point; now that I have watched it, I am doing it for sure in the next three years. The landscapes look beautiful: rolling

fields rich with crops, tiny Romanesque chapels perched on the hills above, and snow-capped mountains on the horizon. Then there are all the beautiful pilgrim refuges where the film’s heroes stop for the night, and where they are looked after by volunteers, serving simple, delicious food and informal spiritual counsel. Some of the pilgrims are lovable and charming while others seem less open, but none of them can avoid the transformative power of this 500 mile path. And then of course there is the “inner” Camino. The gift of this film is that you come away knowing that you are already on the Way, that there might be a gift around every corner and that every morning when we set out with our staff in our hand there is grace that will descend upon us if we will just allow it. The Guidebook to the Camino de Santiago is slightly more impersonal, but it’s also one of the most intimate travel guides I know. It has all sorts of clever tips on finding the right place to stay, but it also contributes regular paragraphs on the spiritual aspects of making this pilgrimage. The first edition of this guidebook has been on my shelf at home for years. This is

THE CAMINO by Shirley Maclaine Known as much for her out-there sensibilities as well as her films Shirley Maclaine is a regular pilgrim to The Camino De Santiago. Her tales of the meaning of the pilgrimage intermingled with her colourful stories from her own pilgrimages, which for me brought an openness and honesty to her accounts that I found charming and endearing. 296pp, 215 x 135mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £8.99

Adam Gordon Title now the 13th edition published since that original one back in 2003. I could say it’s more lightweight, that if fits better in your pocket and that it is completely updated. But it’s more than that – it’s a delicious repository of photographs and evocative rough-and-ready maps, spiritual guidance, and advice on the best inns and hotels in the most remote locations. Its devotion to the experience, and to the Camino as the outward expression of an inner experience, has made it the essential guidebook and resource for pilgrims on the path. And for those of us who haven’t done it? It starts the fire burning, gets us dreaming and makes us pilgrims through life itself. Finally, we have the autobiographical account, from everybody’s favourite spiritual pilgrim, Shirley MacLaine. In all seriousness, she may be a Hollywood legend but her quest for self-discovery has been an inspiration to millions. Shirley was prompted to take part in the pilgrimage after receiving two anonymous letters imploring her to take the difficult trip. In her mid-sixties, Shirley managed to finish the nearly 500-mile trek in only thirty days, which is a phenomenal achievement. Here are the stories, the incredible experiences, the colourful tales – all beautifully narrated. It’s the Camino at first hand. I hope these products make your own Camino inch its way closer. To undertake a walk like this is a declaration that peace and self-realisation are more important to you than distraction and immediate selfgratification. Your own time is precious and it’s time for pilgrimage. Whether you take the outer Camino or the inner path…..

PILGRIM’S GUIDE TO THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO by John Brierley It’s easy to see why this is a perennial favourite for pilgrim’s heading to Camino, provide answers to all the questions that you might have before your pilgrimage as well as excellent maps to guide your way, though beware they aren’t to scale. Lightweight and full of great commentary this is a must-have for anyone looking to make this journey. 144pp, 192mm x 247mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £17.99

Author Dr Tamara Russell How intentions change over time As you settle into a regular mindfulness practice – whether seated or moving – your intentions will naturally change over time. For example, you may have begun with fixed intentions to eliminate all negative experiences from your life, but find that this morphs into a new intention to engage with all experience – even when it is negative. (Practitioners who are coping with depression often begin with the intention to remove their low moods altogether, but soon understand that it’s kinder to the self to instead set the intention to observe periods of low mood with more compassion.) Many studies show that it is this transformed intention to become more compassionate toward ourselves that seems to underpin many of the positive effects of regular mindfulness training. Setting intentions during transitional phases When you transition from one phase of your life to the next, you may find it helpful to engage explicitly with your intentions. This is intentionality at the macro level. If you are changing jobs or relationships, or if perhaps you are about to become a parent or grandparent, or experience what it’s like when your last child leaves home, your underlying intentions for your life and self are likely to shift. Remember that setting intentions gives you a flexible framework for life, and that revising your intentions and setting new ones when you are at life’s crossroads will guide your future behaviour, helping

Title Mindfulness in motion you to stay fully present in your life. Updating intentions helps you to keep sight of what is really important to you at this period of your life. Let’s Practise: Dropping the pebble This 10-minute exercise helps you to explore your intention, expanding on the technique introduced previously. It is called ‘Dropping the Pebble’ (or, just ‘The Pebble’) because it encourages you to observe any ripple effect in your body and mind when you drop a question about your intention into your awareness, as if you were letting a pebble fall into water. The more you practise this exercise, the deeper you will be able to connect with those emotions and thoughts that lie outside your awareness. You can practise the exercise anytime and anywhere you have some quiet space to focus. I use the Pebble exercise all the time – before meetings or client therapy sessions, or before embarking on projects or teaching a mindfulness workshop. I never judge what comes up in my responses; I just experience a deep desire to understand more about what really drives my behaviour. Revisit the Pebble exercise as you progress through the book. By practising repeatedly, you will develop a helpful habit of quickly checking in with your intentions in any situation. Furthermore, developing your skill at reading your body and mind in relation to your intentions will dramatically increase your chances of staying on track in all areas of your life, from your career to your relationships to your spiritual endeavours.

The Pebble exercise is particularly helpful if you are facing a decision that is causing you some uncertainty, confusion or unease, especially during times of transition, as it helps to connect you to your ‘gut feeling’. Settle into a posture that feels comfortable and presents your body in an alert yet relaxed state. Keep your attention primarily focused on your torso. Drop a question into your mind, as if dropping a pebble into a pond, perhaps asking ‘What is my intention with BMT?’ or ‘Why am I practicing mindfulness?’ Observe any ripples or sensations in your body or mind. Be patient – watch, observing your thoughts, images or bodily sensations as they arise. Resist any urge to analyse or rationalise your answers. Drop the question three times. Each time, wait and observe any response, particularly from your body. Consider the strength or absence of bodily reaction or the presence or absence of mental clarity as you practise this exercise. Does anything about them surprise you? Was the first response the same as, or different from, the second or third time you repeated your question?

MINDFULNESS IN MOTION by Dr Tamara Russell Comprehensive, clearly set out and well-illustrated, this is an excellent book for anyone trapped in a busy head-centred world. Drawing on her background in neuroscience and martial arts, Dr Russell has developed exercises over the last ten years that explore the mind through the body. Her five point plan includes short, quick physical exercises, all to be done with full mindful awareness. The main principles are: Pause, Intention, Attention, Understanding me, and Compassion. Each has its own chapter which gives in-depth and thought provoking explanations, and yet this is a highly readable and easy-to-follow book. From tiny changes such as a moment’s pause when the phone rings, to permanent shifts of mental habits, this practical and accessible guide really does offer a whole life plan. We’ve all heard of mind over matter, but Tamara shows us that conscious movement can reprogramme the brain. 352pp, 198 x 129mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £12.99

Slip Author Into Moments Of Conscious Awareness Eachthe Day Title Portraits from inner landscape SIDEWALK ORACLES by Robert Moss

THE FEAR CURE by Dr Lissa Rankin

Robert Moss teaches you how to enjoy your life. You might think that’s hard, but he provides eighteen games to help you with the task. Moss specialises in dreams, oracles and symbols. This book invites you to become a kairomancer, someone attuned to synchronicity, to catching the special moment. Magic is simply a question of walking the walk: if you are looking for magic you will find magic. A new Robert Moss book is always a cause for celebration and this one is as ever full of stories about dreams, coincidences and extraordinary outcomes. You can read it as a practical guidebook full of exercises that will expand our openness, or as a rich and life-enhancing testimony from a master teacher. Oh, and the jacket is wonderful too. 264pp, 213 x 137mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £12.99

Knowing that fear is bad for our physical and mental health is not news, but this is one of the first mainstream titles which looks more closely at fear, at how we experience it and what exactly it consists of. It then goes on to advise us how to shift our way of relating to fear and disquiet in all their different forms. Lissa Rankin is a physician and the best-selling author of Mind Over Medicine, but she is also loyal to her intuitive and spiritual side. Thus, she comes across as the perfect guide to this tricky territory. The account is richly leavened with personal stories and anecdotes about people she has treated, and it’s the perfect combination of tried and tested medical information together with a more comforting spiritual viewpoint. 112pp, 178 x 175mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £12.99

UPLIFTING PRAYERS TO LIGHT YOUR WAY by Sonia Choquette Sonia Choquette is one of the wisest and most popular spiritual teachers writing today. On this side of the Atlantic we can often feel uncomfortable with prayer, because religion is so much on the decline and many of us are actually trying to escape its control and influence. On the other hand, sometimes a situation is just too tough and we can’t face building up our self-esteem, or the energy and resolve just aren’t there to negotiate our way out of it. A simple appeal to a higher power can help…it might also just lift our hearts enough. This book contains 200 prayers – or invocations – tailored to different situations and then grouped into themes. We don’t need to call this higher power “God”. It simply helps to consider that maybe there are powers, which are greater, or just more specialised, than we are, and that we might not always be alone. 304pp, 235 x 157mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £8.99

BOOK OF SHE by Sara Avant Stover This is a personal story written in full-on American style, so to gain the benefits of its message any reader needs to feel at ease with the author’s voice. The book talks about the Heroine’s journey, in touch with the divine in various forms personified in archetypal and subtle forms by the name SHE. It visits familiar places such as the mother/baby bond and the monthly cycle and encourages the reader, through journaling, to explore and understand what it means to be a woman. All sorts of characters pop up along the way, Mary Magdalene, Tara, Emily Dickinson, all of whom have a connection with SHE, the soul of this book. Depending on your personal perspective on life this strong book is one to either fall in love with, dissolve into and allow it to transform you with joy, or gently leave aside. 348pp, 216 x 135mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £14.99

EVERYTHING YOU NEED YOU HAVE by Gerad Kite Great title, and a fantastic set of endorsements from a diverse range of characters, from Chris Evans to Ed O’Brien of Radiohead, and from Fearne Cotton to Will Young. So most likely it’s either very good, or the author has a lot of celebrity friends. The teachings he presents have much in common with cognitive behavioural therapy. So what we often see as “I” is really just a ragbag collection of thoughts echoing in our heads. At the heart of the author’s approach is the image of the pendulum, where all we see is the swinging of the end of the pendulum from one pole to the other. The book offers exercises which show us how to see things from the top of the pendulum, where all is still, calm and untroubled. It works very well as a self-help book but that would not be enough for Cygnus. In the final section the book engages with love – love for humanity and all that is and this makes the book special. 320pp, 215 x 142mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £9.99

CREATURES OF A DAY by Irvin D Yalom Each chapter of this new book by Irvin Yalom reads like a short story covering the history of a different course of therapy with a different person. Yalom is of course the therapist, even though he is in his mid to late eighties and can see his own death fast approaching. He is like the wounded healer, aware of his own flaws and weaknesses, but also confident in the processes that he has become acquainted with. Nothing is untreatable, nothing incurable. We as readers start to feel like we too are in the consultation room with all our problems, which might still remain unspoken. But we will be ok, if we just find the right people to listen patiently. 348pp, 216 x 135mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £14.99

Nature’s pathways to the world within THE URBAN WILDLIFE GARDENER by Emma Hardy

SACRED EARTH CELEBRATIONS by Glennie Kindred

I think one of the main philosophies behind Cygnus is that we aim to make a difference by doing small, manageable things that help the world at large, rather than gaze at the big picture and feel daunted and helpless. This then is precisely the sort of book that we love to bring to your attention, where no obstacle is insurmountable when it comes to creating a beautiful and nurturing space for plants, animals, insects and human beings. Above all, you become a gardener, even though you might not begin the journey as a gardener: it’s written for a beginner, and the ideas on offer can be realised by anyone with just a basic level of competence. It’s packed full of colour photographs and, of course, all the gardening tips are nontoxic and generally natural. Like everyone, I get depressed when I hear about a decline in numbers of bees, birds, insects and small mammals in this country, but with this book I feel that my little patch of ground will be a welcoming haven. 468pp, 144 x 128mm, Hardback, 2015, RRP £14.99

This long-standing classic has recently been reissued. It’s still one of the best introductions to the cycle of the year following the spiritual traditions of these islands. It contains simple recipes, rituals, meditations and craft ideas, which help us to attune to the subtle rhythms unfolding around us, of the year and of our own lives. It doesn’t require the reader to believe in anything, but it leads us into honouring the earth, attuning to the plant and animal life around us, and observing the heavens. There are line drawings everywhere, both to enrich the text and illustrate the plants and moon phases, and to help us with all the craft projects. It does not attempt to recreate the past, but encourages us, whether we are celebrating on our own or with others, to follow our own inspired interpretation of the year’s unfolding. 160pp, 198 x 129mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £9.95

THE WALKERS GUIDE TO OUTDOOR CLUES AND SIGNS by Tristan Gooley OUT NOW IN PAPERBACK: The ultimate guide to what the land, sun and moon, stars, trees and plants can show us. This truly extraordinary book is a great find if you either already love the outdoors, or want to learn to do so. In a grounded, pragmatic way, it has an enchantment all its own. It teaches you to observe over 850 outdoor clues and signs; to become aware and mindful of what is at your feet. As well as the most comprehensive guide to natural navigation for walkers ever compiled, it also contains clues for weather forecasting, tracking, city walks, coast walks, and, intriguingly, moonlit night walks. 448pp, 129 x 197mm, Paperback, 2015, RRP £9.99 Code: 250208 Cygnus Price: £7.49
