EDITOR’S LETTER
Guidance from Spiritual Teachers
I
was very fortunate to be invited to the recent Eckhart Tolle talk at the Royal Albert Hall in London, thanks to the lovely people at Alternatives. As usual, he showed himself to be a master at commanding a large space with thousands of eager listeners, and his talk was fine-pointed and illuminating. What he was teaching, which is similar to what many others are saying (it genuinely is the Perennial Philosophy), is truly radical when you hold it up against the prevailing currents in today’s fast-moving and hyperconnected consumer society, dominated by money and distraction, in as much as it directs us away from the frantic thinking mind and towards the “isness”, the presence behind it all. Like a lot of you I am sure, I am not embarrassed to be skeptical of flashing phones, anxiety-inducing social media and the desire to possess the latest devices. I am far from being against technology, but I prefer to slow down and meet people face-to-face. As I said, the audience was captivated, and I started thinking, if all these people truly understand this and take it away with them and really start living it at home,
2
we could have a revolution on our hands: hopefully a peaceful one. I don’t think that there is much doubt that we broadly speaking agreed with what he says. Many people at the Albert Hall are “influencers”, and are held in high regard for what they do. Sometimes though we have a tendency to treat spiritual inquiry as more of a hobby or as an accessory in our lives, rather than as the most important aspect outside our families. We mustn’t walk away and forget those things that at the time seemed so vital. These aren’t the same old lives that we used to lead. I think that outside pressures are becoming stronger and it’s no longer just a matter of staying comfortable. I think we are required to work against the negative forces around us, against divisiveness and the abuse of our environment. I also went to a talk recently given by the Tibetan Buddhist nun Thubten Chodron to mark the opening in late October of a wonderful exhibition of Buddhist materials – books, manuscripts, texts – at the British Library. She spoke of us always “wanting more and better”. Again it’s distraction and consumption that we start craving, but it won’t make us happy. Many of us have had wonderful lives but, to use a Buddhist expression, we are bodhisattvas and are engaged in the greater struggle – and we mustn’t lapse into complacency. I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but all of us in the Cygnus community are aware of a greater responsibility. So much of what’s wrong in our society revolves around identity: who we say we are and what our labels are. In the UK it can be the political party we support, or whether we are Leavers or Remainers. It’s ok to have strong feelings: I know I do. But we have to love our neighbours; we have to be tolerant and supportive of them as human beings, even if their beliefs are 180 degrees different from ours. Ultimately we also need to release our identity and let go of any labels we might have picked up and which we now identify with.
At Christmas the light starts to return and I hope it does for all of you. We have included in the following pages an extract from a new book by the much-missed Wayne Dyer, one of my favourite people. He too urges us to release our anger, because anger takes us away from love. It distorts our thinking and leads us to foolish actions. As well as his short piece, I hope you enjoy everything else in this magazine: the writings and all the books and cards that are included. I hope you can use the materials here to guide you on your spiritual path to become a more authentic person. As it’s Christmas, there are some great card decks and tarot sets, which I hope you can use to go within and find guidance. At Christmas the light starts to return and I hope it does for all of you. May we stay true to our intuition and hold on to our best intentions. I am always hopeful that, with every new year, we can make a new and positive start.

AN ORANGE AND A CANDLE BY WAYNE DYER
T
hink for a minute about an orange. When you squeeze it as hard as you can, what comes out? Orange juice, of course. But the question is, why does juice come out when an orange is squeezed? The answer is, because that’s what’s inside. Now, does it matter who does the squeezing? Does it matter how you do it, what instrument you use, or what time of day you do it? No. When you squeeze an orange, what always comes out is what’s inside. Similarly, when you squeeze a person – that is, put pressure on them of any kind – and anger and hatred and stress and depression come out, it isn’t because of who is doing the squeezing or when they do it or how they choose to do it. It’s because that is what’s inside that person. If you don’t have it inside, it can never come out, no matter what your circumstances are. When somebody cuts you off on the freeway and you’re mad as hell, it isn’t because they cut you off that you’re so upset; it’s because that is what you carry around inside. And when you stop carrying that around inside, nothing that anybody does can upset you. I love this quote that’s been attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” In other words, no one can depress you. No one can make you anxious. No one can hurt your feelings. No one can make you anything other than what you allow inside. Whoever you are, you have a voice in everything that is happening to you. You are creating it. If you’re not getting along with somebody at work, if you’re having difficulty in your relationships and feeling victimized,
Your Anger is on You Alone if your children don’t respect you, look at yourself first and ask, “What is it about me, and what can I change in order to help myself not feel victimized?” Don’t default to, “How can I get them to change? How can I make the world different?” Anything you hate, are annoyed by, or are angry about is really your own hatred, your own annoyance, and your own anger. That’s yours – you own it. Nobody else does. It’s all on you alone. When you blame somebody else for being annoying in your life, what you’re really saying is, “If only they were more like me, then I wouldn’t be so annoyed.” As you move along the path of enlightenment, however, something interesting happens. When you encounter the people who behave toward you in ways you used to call annoying, you view it as their problem. You don’t own it any longer.
You now respond with ability toward those who are behaving in ways you don’t like. You learn to tell yourself, “They are who they are, and they’re behaving in the only way that they know how to behave right now. So what I will do is this: I will respond to them with what I am. And what I am is love, kindness, and acceptance. If I have that, then I can deal with anyone else’s behavior effectively, or I can ignore it. Either way, I don’t own it; they do.” (…) Imagine a lit candle: if you were to walk outside with it, the wind would blow out the flame pretty quickly. Likewise, there are all kinds of outside forces you are going to encounter in life that may make you feel as if your inner candle – which symbolizes who you are as a human being – is getting blown out all the time. But in fact, you can ensure that your inner flame never even flickers. Outside of you, any number of things can and will happen that you’re not in control of: the storms of life, taking the form of illness or an accident or any other unforeseen event, may strike at any moment. Your inner candle flame, though, is uniquely yours. You can always process your world in a way that alienates or destroys you. And perhaps the highest place you can get to in life is to understand that your own inner development, symbolized by that candle flame, can stay strong and bright regardless of what’s going on out there. Again, I return to the notion of ownership: It is empowering to realize that whatever is going on inside you is entirely up to you. It is all yours. Courtesy of Hay House Inc 2019

BOOK REVIEWS — Buddhism & Eastern Thought CHOOSING COMPASSION by Anam Thubten
ZEN by Alan Watts
The author is a monk who was born in Tibet but who now lives and teaches in California. He writes in English and his teachings are clear and powerful. No one can deny that the world needs our love and this book proposes concise ways in which we can make a difference. Surely there is no philosophical or religious system that is more suited to helping us open our hearts and increase our connection then Buddhism. You only have to look at the parliamentary debates and the shocking anger around the European Union debate to see how much we need compassion. We can disagree with our neighbour but that is no reason to hate them. This is a vital and helpful book, especially now.
A brilliant distillation of Zen philosophy, this wonderful and elegant hardback edition of one of Alan Watts’s earliest books would make a great gift for any spiritual seeker. It’s a previously rare work that was first published in 1948 and it features succinct and charming ink drawings and calligraphy done by Watts himself. He was a great expert on Zen Buddhism but for me his greatest skill is the wit and perceptiveness of his writing. The work of Alan Watts was a gateway for many of us into a life of spiritual exploration and practice and it’s truly gratifying to witness his work being rediscovered by a new generation of readers. This short book is described in the preface as “a haiku, a condensation of profundity that beckons to new understandings”.

NARROW ROAD TO THE INTERIOR by Matsuo Basho
LOVE LOVE LOVE by Stephen Turoff
Remembered as one of the most-loved luminaries of Asian literature, Basho’s famous travel diary links together prose and haiku as he recounts his journey to the northern provinces of Japan. This wonderful Shambhala Pocket Library edition features a beautiful, modern translation and an insightful introduction by Sam Hamill. It also includes Travelogue of Weather-Beaten Bones, The Knapsack Notebook, and Sarashina Travelogue. Together with two hundred and fifty of Basho’s finest haiku, this attractive, reader-friendly book is essential for any classics collection as the most complete single-volume collection of Basho’s tranquil and contemplative writings.
Based in Essex, Stephen Turoff is one of the best-known spiritual therapists in the world, working with the Power of Light to raise consciousness and bring inner balance. He is also a teacher of meditation and Kriya Yoga, and this book is based on the transcripts of several seminars he gave between 2004 and 2008. His teachings are conversational but profound. The book is full of illustrative stories and amazing anecdotes about some of the healings he has been involved in. I must admit, I had never heard of Stephen before this book, but the text is addictive and hard to put down and the teachings are genuine and full of integrity. They seem to be based primarily on Yogic teachings but he also makes many references to Jesus.

Kobayashi Issa is considered one of the greatest haiku poets of Japan, known for his attention to detail and his playful sense of humour. Issa’s unfortunate life has made him an enduring figure, having spent his life obsessed with loss after being exiled from his home and spending much of his adult life homeless and impoverished. Despite this his poems reveal an abiding love for suffering humanity and a devoutly Buddhist spiritual compassion for all life. The Spring of My Life is his most beloved autobiographical work following the classic style of Basho’s linked prose and haiku. This Shambhala Pocket Library edition features a fantastic translation and introduction by Sam Hamill and is a gem to include in your classics collection. 224pp, 171 x 108 mm, Paperback, 2019, RRP £8.99

LEARNING TO LISTEN WITH THE HEART BY GEOFF NAPIER
N
ot long ago I visited some friends in Haarlem, in the Netherlands. By chance, I was invited to an open meeting one evening where everyone was encouraged to share their understanding of living a spiritual life. I was curious, since the format was actually quite similar to the Aurora Gatherings I now coordinate here in the UK. About a dozen or more of us sat in a circle. Someone began talking and very soon both newcomers and regulars were participating in the conversation. Now, my Dutch is not so good: I can just about ask for the peanut butter and say ‘thank you’, but that’s my limit. As for following deeply profound discussions about the passage of the soul through life and death… well, realistically I have to admit at this point that I kept losing the thread until whenever it was that I heard a familiar word or two. After about twenty minutes my concentration was floundering. I wondered what to do, and I was petrified that I would fall asleep and snore. I had noticed though that some people seemed to be coming across more clearly while others just seemed to lose me as soon as they opened their mouths. I was confused because I could not distinguish any difference in vocabulary between those I could just about follow, and those who had lost me. It was a nice atmosphere, so I thought I’d just appreciate the collective presence of the group and not worry about missing the specific meaning of their words. It occurred to me then to go the whole hog and disconnect my ears completely and stop listening for words, and instead listen to how my heart was responding to the conversation. I was bowled over. As soon as I turned off the stream of unfamiliar sounds which were all but meaningless to me, I could easily turn inwards and listen somehow to the feelings in my heart as they spoke. It was a lightbulb moment. What had seemed like a dull and hazy black and white picture with muffled sound
When Your Heart Sings suddenly turned into a vivid, fullcolour ‘with Dolby surround sound’ experience. When each person spoke my heart responded accordingly. Some spoke sincerely and earnestly about the matter in hand, but my heart only heard a faint, muffled whisper of reality conveyed. When others simply spoke from their heart, my own heart glowed or even sang in response. I soon discerned that while the words may have been similar, my heart told me immediately if the words ‘rang true’ to their own hearts and experiences, or whether someone was parroting from what they had learned in books or had absorbed from another’s spoken words. In
short, they were speaking from their intellect and memory. I was fascinated how simply by switching over to listening to my heart responses, I picked up a totally different perception of the world. I could immediately discern how in touch each person was with their inner reality or how caught up others were with the world of intellectual concepts and conditioned beliefs; and I could see the ways they had forgotten to keep in touch with how their hearts actually felt as they spoke. So, for the rest of the evening my heart ‘sang’ or waited patiently for the next person to stop talking from their intellect. This experience was not hard to do, it was simply that it had never occurred to me before not to listen with my ears. Try it for yourself sometime, for example when you hear a foreign language being spoken, and listen to how your heart feels in response to the conversation. Once you’ve practised that, try something harder: listen to a conversation in English and observe if the speakers are actually coming from their hearts. This has opened a new window for me, one that I am sure many of you have always had open. I am reminding myself now to listen more consciously with my heart much more of the time. It’s taking perseverance to replace the life-long habit of just listening to words, but it is certainly worth it. Happy listening!

Illustrator, folklorist and tattoo designer Fez Inkwright has come up with this amazing hardback treasury of plants and their properties. She calls it “an unusual history of everyday plants” – it’s similar to the Sensory Herbal Handbook we featured a couple of issues ago, except the line drawings are all black and white, and it’s not as comprehensive on the magic and healing properties of the plants. All the same it’s utterly charming and coaxes you gently into all the “other” aspects of plants: their folklore, a few spells, a few remedies and old songs and poems that carry more than a grain of truth. It’s a point of departure – the drawings are bold and full of character – which will lead us to love our meadows and hedgerows more, and increase our appreciation of these plants’ wisdom. 120 pp, 217 x 157 mm, Hardback, 2019, RRP £11.99

ALL GOOD THINGS BY STEPHEN ELLCOCK
“My deepest wish is to bring a little piece of Heaven down to Earth.”
T
his wondrous journey through the imaginative life of humanity opens with a quotation from Thomas Traherne (1636-1674): In all Things, all Things service do to all: And thus a sand is endless, though most small. And every thing is truly Infinite, In its Relation deep and exquisite. Here are just four of the images – Faust by Rembrandt (top right), a Japanese print of three crows (bottom right), Blake’s watercolour of Jacob’s Ladder (top left) and a design for the stage set of Mozart’s Magic Flute (right). We need to celebrate the wonder of creation and remind ourselves of the beautiful things that men and women have achieved. This is a special book, with vibrant colour images on every page. © September Books

BOOK REVIEWS — Spiritual Practice
THE RITUAL YEARBOOK by Theresa Cheung
LIVING THE LIFE THAT YOU ARE by Nic Higham
Creating small daily routines that gradually lead to lasting change sounds great on paper; but in practice we often fall off track. Bestselling author Theresa Cheung though offers a solution: by drenching routines with so much meaning that they become ritualized, we can make lasting change. This is a great volume of 365 rituals, including meditations, practices and activities, all of which can be read and practised quickly, making them easy to incorporate into daily life. These rituals require consistent application, but the results make it worthwhile - creating a greater sense of happiness, meaning and fulfilment. PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 12th.
Have you ever felt isolated even with friends all around you? Our lives are full of pressures from all around – to do more, to be more, to get ‘out there’ – and while solitude can be an escape from that, a deep-seated loneliness can be crippling. This book takes you through a process to combat this feeling, by first investigating loneliness in all its forms, then taking a deeper look at anxiety and where it begins, to eventually exploring our natural unity with life and enabling you to connect with ‘Deeper Knowing’. Higham draws on radical mindfulness to bring you back to your ‘aliveness’ and directly engage you with life which steers you towards a path to self-discovery.
There has to be a new world for this gentle kind of magic that is coming to the fore today and that people are connecting with more and more. It’s tied in with relationships, with community, with politics and the environment. It’s low key, but it’s still magic – and magic is nothing to be scared of. It’s an undercurrent but it sustains you behind your daily life. It’s about changing the world and using your power. The book is full of stories and fables that illuminate magic as it works in all sorts of situations. There are also exercises to create an altar, consecrate a talisman and run a sacred bath. It’s a magic that weaves all that is extraordinary back into right relationship with the everyday.

WINTER WITHIN BY DANU FOREST
©danuforest2019
W
inter draws in, in a slow burning blaze of splendour, as the wheel turns to the dark half of the year and the delights of summer fall away with the leaves from the trees. The Celtic year traditionally begins with the festival of Samhain, now known as Halloween, on the 31st of October. This is a time to honour the last harvests of the year, as well as the dead, our distant ancestors, and the spirit world. By remembering our mortality, and our roots, with gratitude, we allow our inner selves to be swept clean with the chill winds and longer nights, and to sink within to rest and rejuvenate. In the Celtic traditions all life begins in darkness, and winter provides the opportunity for life to germinate beneath the soil, in the womb of the earth while the surface lies dormant. The same can be true for our inner lives too, and more time indoors allows us to slow down and connect with our selves away from the demanding glare of the summer sun, of the need to do, in favour of the need to be. Now we may deepen our experience of silence, of night, allowing our inner life to flourish unchallenged, the first spark of new life igniting at the winter solstice. This year the solstice falls on the 22nd of December, when the hours of sunlight begin to increase once again. There are many ways to connect to this season which draw on a host of traditions, but some of the best ways are simple. There is no substitute for time spent out in nature, in all weathers, to really connect to the land and the beauties of the land, and this can have immeasurable effects on our health and wellbeing. Cold air in our lungs on a bright winter’s day adds an extra brightness to our cheeks and our souls, but a walk in the winter rain can be equally beneficial. There is nothing like a hot drink by the fire, legs stretched and boots muddied, after we’ve really spent some time outside. In Britain we tend to somehow fear wilder weather, when practically it is usually just the matter of a good coat, and sensible boots. When we spend time in nature during the wilder times, it shows us how resilient we are, how
Deepen Your Soul’s Connection we are a part of nature still, and with a little awareness it can be an act of devotion, of connection, to life itself. Try greeting the sunrise on a winter’s morning, or going to a high place to see the sunset, for the simplest and most profound gifts of the season. Its good to use the winter months as a time to deepen your soul’s connection. I take up journaling at this time of the year, and recording my dreams, to hear my inner voice and needs a little more clearly. It’s also good to be creative over the long evenings. Dream sachets, or lavender bags are
a good project – small cloth pillows filled with lavender or chamomile to soothe the spirit, perhaps with magical additions such as mugwort to aid lucid dreaming, rowan berries for protection, or hawthorn berries for the heart. Taking regular time for meditation – just five minutes simply being aware of your breath – can be transformational. If you haven’t already, perhaps set up an altar – a bare shelf works well – and decorate it with pictures of your ancestors, with a white pillar candle, to light daily as a reminder of your connection to spirit and the promise that the light of spring will return. I refresh my altar every month, and renew it completely every season, as a way to physically represent my spiritual life, integrated into my daily world. In winter, I strip it right down to a few simple things, white candles, an ammonite or a pretty stone or two, and perhaps a decorative pot filled with flowering bulbs that will cope indoors, so that I can let my eyes rest upon bare earth when I mediate, and notice when the first green shoots appear. Winter is the time to reduce the pull of the outer, material world, if we can, and honour the inner life, noticing our feelings, our dreams, our souls calling. If we treat this process gently, and surrender softly to its rhythm, we return with the spring, brighter and wiser than before.

THE FOREVER ANGELS by PMH Atwater
Exploring the near-death experiences of children, distinguished researcher PMH Atwater delves deeply into the profound impact of NDE during childhood - the consequences of which can be far-reaching. These otherworldly experiences are often linked to the development of psychic abilities, higher intelligence, and “wisdom beyond their years”. Drawing from 40 years of research and nearly 400 interviews with childhood experiencers, Atwater analyses the similarities and differences between adult and infant NDE, drawing profound conclusions. Accompanied with illustrations by childhood experiencers, this is a unique, heartfelt and innovative study of NDE.

Grief and death are subjects that often cause discomfort at their mere mention - making people shy away immediately. However, there can be a benefit to addressing these topics, as Darrelyn Gunzburg shows in this book. She gives a different perspective on grief by reframing it as something that we should familiarise ourselves with in order to deeply connect with life. Combining theory and real-life experiences, Gunzberg addresses the nature of grief, how we cope with loss and how we come to accept it. This is a much-needed, intelligent, nurturing book that bravely addresses a topic that we so often avoid. 200 pp, 198 x 129 mm, Paperback, 2019, RRP £14.00

The process of dying is not something we are often taught. Although it is a fact of life, we are mostly ill-equipped to deal with it. But DeLeo has accompanied many people as they faced the end of life and has created this thoughtful and accessible guide to help those who were never taught. By drawing on Tibetan Buddhist techniques that she has found particularly helpful over the years, the book supplies a roadmap, a lifeline even, to help you process the seemingly insurmountable task of facing the end of life. It provides support at every stage, both for them and for you, and guides you from the very beginning, from what to say when you don’t know what to say, to the very moment death arrives. This is a wonderful small guide, the perfect size to carry with you, that provides practical, pithy, down-to-earth advice and support to dip into when you need it. 144 pp, 177 x 128 mm, Paperback, 2019, RRP £13.99

A Guide to Starting a Cygnus Café
W
e know that we have many members who are interested in starting Cygnus Cafés in their community, and that they have questions, both about how to get started and also how they want their group to run. Below is a mini-guide to running a Cygnus Café to give you a taste of what you can expect – if you would like to start your own Café please do get in touch. ❖ The starting point for setting up a group is the purpose
of a Cygnus Café, and that is creating a space for you to meet people of like mind in your own locality. Nowadays it is often the case that you might find you can only get so far by yourself using a book. Sometimes it can be a great help on your spiritual journey to share issues that feel unresolved, with others of like heart.
❖ Many groups take a little
while to gain momentum, and this is normal. We suggest you avoid the temptation of trying to find a perfect arrangement. ❖ Setting up for the
meeting we suggest that the host prepares the room in the most appropriate way, arranging the seating so that everyone has eye-to-eye contact. Meetings generally begin with everyone taking turns to say their name and where they are from and, if they wish, a mention about something they may want to talk about later. ❖ Many groups have found it
❖ Most of our groups run in what
we would call an unstructured way, they have no agenda and allow the magic of the moment to provide the topics spontaneously, depending on who wishes to share their recently experienced insights or share their current concerns of the heart.
very helpful to keep the level of the meeting at a higher level by setting the intention of the group to the highest good at the beginning of the meeting. So that, whatever happens, the highest good may come out of it.
❖ When getting down to
❖ Gradually most groups
practicalities the first thing you need is a space, generally meetings are held in members’ homes or quiet rooms in cafés or community spaces. Any room hire costs etc. are shared by the participants on a donation basis. We advise avoiding noisy venues or spaces that have no door, as this helps a great deal. You need a safe space where you know you will not be interrupted. ❖ When thinking about when and how often to hold
your meetings, consider the needs of the group when deciding what is best for (most of ) you. Some groups choose mornings, others evenings, some even choose a weekend. Larger groups sometimes choose to have two meetings in a month, once in the evening and once in the morning, to match the different lifestyles. Most meeting last for around 2 hours and our advice is to stick to the same day every month, week or fortnight to allow people to organise their diaries.
begin to observe how Cygnus Cafés can grow in depth as participants feel more comfortable and they can share their vulnerabilities and “soft spots”. This gives others the confidence to share their concerns or doubts.
❖
We love hearing from our members and finding out what you are up to at your café meetings. Please send your comments, thoughts and updates to editor@cygnus-books.co.uk so that we can include them on this page.
❖ For meeting support you can contact Vicky Hartley at Cygnus on

A GIFT FROM AN ANGEL CHANNELLER BY SANDRA EDWARDS We welcome contributions from members and readers, both to the Review and to our online blog. Here is Sandra who runs the Cygnus café in Doncaster, describing a wonderful round of spiritual connections.
A
s I prepared to join my friend to get a lift to the train station, I knew Tuesday 3rd September was going to be a wonderful day. We took the fast train from Doncaster to Kings Cross in London and arrived exactly on time. We then took a taxi to Covent Garden and finally walked the short distance to Cecil Court and our destination – Watkins Bookshop. It’s an Aladdin’s cave of treasures, but we were not there for the shopping. There waiting for us, literally sitting in the window, was the person who was the true purpose of our visit: Wendy Erlick, Angel Channeller. So, what prompted this visit? In short, a book: Wendy’s book The Gift Of An Angel which had been ordered from Cygnus some weeks beforehand by a member of the Cygnus Cafe Group I co-ordinate, and then given to me. It had been sitting on a small table in a corner for a month or so with a couple of other books, when one morning I witnessed it fall onto the floor, face upwards, when no-one was near it. The other two books did not move at all. The night before this incident, I had attended my first Qigong lesson. The tutor Meg Allen sees coloured light around people, which she believes to be angelic beings or forces, and at the end of that first lesson she told me that she could see a wonderful green angelic form behind me – my guardian or personal angel in fact. I do believe in angels or angelic forces, but have never read that many ‘angel books’ before, because the few that I had read seemed a bit too “sugary”, you could even say not authentic, and they just didn’t resonate with me. This is why until that moment Wendy’s book had been left unattended by me on the table.
Stories from a Cygnus Café So on that morning when I went to pick up The Gift Of An Angel I decided that someone was trying to tell me something. I am always aware that there is more to this world than meets the eye, so I took the hint and decided to read the book straight away. What a little treasure this book is! Wendy writes about communication with her personal angel in such a practical, everyday and authentic way, that I found it quite simply inspiring. After passing this book on to a friend, who found it equally interesting, we decided to make a trip to Watkins Bookshop for a personal reading and coaching session with Wendy. I joined Wendy first in the shop’s large and secluded window
at her velvet covered table with an assortment of crystals arranged on it, and I found her welcoming, charming and authentic. My one hour session just flew by and indeed I could have sat there talking with Wendy for three hours and it still would not have been enough time with her. I did not know what to expect from the reading but was hoping to get guidance from Wendy that the way in which I was personally trying to integrate spirituality into my everyday life was the right one for me. I got that, and the channelled messages I received from the angelic realm through Wendy definitely resonated with me and in fact made me feel quite joyful. Wendy also gave me some energy healing during the session. And my personal gifts from this reading that I can share with you were some very specific insights, guidance and inspirations for the future. To sum up, I would have no hesitation in recommending Wendy’s book and also in recommending a reading with her; and a visit to Watkins Bookshop is a treat in itself. As I recognise the importance of an attitude of gratitude – a quality that Wendy also advocates and offers teachings on – I have therefore three thank yous to make: Thank you for Cygnus and the Cafe Community ● Thank you for Watkins Bookshop ● Thank you for the Angel Channeller called Wendy Jane Erlick ●

224pp, 214 x 136 mm, Paperback, 2019, RRP £12.99
We all experience suffering at some point in our lives, but we rarely inquire into what suffering actually consists of. What we find when we closely inspect our suffering is that it is a resistance to what is. In this book, William Arntz draws from spiritual teachers, philosophers and his own experience to deeply explore the nature of suffering and provide easy guidance to aid the cessation of your own suffering. This is a great self-help book that reframes the self-help paradigm by offering advice that aims at reducing suffering rather than increasing happiness. Written in a humorous, conversational style, this is a book for those who seek to better understand suffering, surrender, and…themselves. ❖ Code: 290439 ❖ Non-Member Price: £11.10 ❖ Member Price: £9.99

With 10 percent of Western children having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), many are searching for the answer to why this “mistake” occurs and how to deal with it. Nobody has more elegantly and clearly put together an explanation than Thom Hartmann. His ground-breaking theory reframes the negative bias towards ADHD; showing how individuals with ADHD display characteristics that would have made them thrive in a hunter-gatherer society, but can hinder them in modern life. This fascinating book is clinical and accessible in equal measure. Anyone with a connection to someone with ADHD would benefit from Hartmann’s theory, which gives perspective on how ADHD is an asset when properly utilised. ❖ Code: 290420 ❖ Non-Member Price: £8.87 ❖ Member Price: £7.99

At some point, many of us have felt that we are fraudulently claiming to be something that we are not, that we are not as good as others think we are. This is a surprisingly common and increasingly occurring phenomenon - experienced by high profile “stars” like David Bowie, Tina Fey and Maya Angelou. In this informative book, psychologist Dr Sandi Mann questions why this phenomenon is growing and how we can build the self-confidence to go beyond it. With self-assessment quizzes, tips and strategies, this book gently challenges any negative beliefs you may hold about yourself and encourages greater assertiveness and self-esteem in the process.
Zena Cooper was born with Marfan syndrome, a connective tissue disorder which means she is almost completely blind. This sightlessness, that so many of us would consider inhibitive or lessening our abilities, is something Zena embraces and she believes it gives her greater clarity to the real meaning of life. In this brilliant and positively unique book, Zena takes us on her journey of accepting her limitations. She shares her unique model for resetting negative thought patterns and reshaping personal narratives so that we can find beauty, peace and understanding in adversity. Plus you’ll get to know and love Zena’s spirited guide dog, Munch. This incredible book will inspire you, help you find gratitude in whatever your circumstances and to see the world with your heart. ❖ Code: 290410 ❖ Non-Member Price: £7.76 ❖ Member Price: £6.99
YOUR VIVID LIFE by Shayne Traviss
Shayne Traviss is a fascinating man. He took the leap that many nine-to-fivers often dream of – escaping the rat race and discovering who you are. Armed with only a laptop, Shayne did just that, founded VividLife.me and wrote a book to help others. Split into three parts – Stop Looking Outside, Questioning and Authenticity – his steps are simple, methodical and a pleasure to follow. While what he’s saying may not be new, the way he goes about it is fresh and systematic without ever being condescending. He knows how hard shutting out the noise of everyday life is, because he’s been there, done that, and wrote a book about it. 208 pp, 216 x 136 mm, Paperback, 2019, RRP £10.99

WHEN PLANTS DREAM by Daniel Pinchbeck and Sophia Rokhlin
With an urge to reconnect with nature and explore consciousness, many Westerners are turning towards a powerful tool for emotional healing and personal transformation - Ayahuasca. The psychoactive brew, traditionally used by the indigenous peoples of the Upper Amazon, has a profound impact on people’s lives - including the lives of both authors. Examining its worldwide impact, Pinchbeck (bestselling author of Breaking Open the Head) and Rokhlin eloquently explore the rich cultural and historical origins of Ayahuasca, along with its current economic, social and environmental effects. When Plants Dream offers deep insights into Ayahuasca, shamanism and the psychedelic experience - acting as a springboard for self-discovery. 212pp, 241 x 158 mm, Hardback, 2019, RRP £14.99

So many of us live in cities and have lost our ability to tune into nature and live according to the rhythms of the Earth. This colourful and informative lunar calendar, in paperback format, offers an invitation to tune back into nature through your own garden. As you may know, all plants are affected differently by the moon’s position, particularly the four vegetable groups of root, leaf, flower and seed/fruit. After an introduction to planting, green manure and garden design, this book becomes a diary offering suggestions for every day of the year. With tables to calculate weather influences and individual crop patterns, this a useful almanac for any lunar gardener. ❖ Code: 290424 ❖ Non-Member Price: £7.22 ❖ Member Price: £6.50
Bees. Where to begin? Earth is home to some twenty thousand species of bee. We are all hugely reliant on bees as the pollinators of our crops. And yet there’s little widespread understanding of how the tiny bees are such integral parts of our ecosystem. For Brigit Strawbridge Howard, the realization of her disconnection from bees and nature literally stopped her in her tracks and would lead her on a journey to rediscovering a natural world that had been lost to her for decades. This provocative memoir will show you the impact of even the tiniest being on our earth and inspire you to rekindle your own relationship with the friendly bee. It’s a beautiful and timely read that everyone could benefit from. ❖ Code: 290447 ❖ Non-Member Price: £15.54 ❖ Member Price: £13.99
Rose has been at the forefront of meat-free food writing for over 35 years, having been raised vegetarian since birth, and her books have sold more than 3 million copies worldwide. She is also the author of a couple of Cygnus favourites: I Met a Monk and Every Breath You Take. These books expound on the teachings of the Buddha and her grandmother Grace Cooke was the medium for White Eagle, so she definitely comes to veganism from an ethical and spiritual direction. This is her first major title that’s entirely vegan and in it she offers a masterclass in all the rich variety of tastes it offers. Recipes include sweet potato gratin, aubergine pilaf cake and lemon cheesecake. ❖ Code: 290437 ❖ Non-Member Price: £16.65 ❖ Member Price: £14.99
From one of “Britain’s 50 New Radicals” (The Observer) comes a well-researched and inspirational guide on how to be bold and decisive in the challenging times ahead. It’s full of anecdotes and uplifting stories that will encourage us all to improve the world, giving us an optimism we desperately need. OBSERVING NATURE & THE WISDOM OF THE BEES BY MADDY HARLAND
P
ermaculture design is based on 3 ethics: Earth Care, People Care and Fair Shares, and works with principles based on Nature. Nature has millions of years of R & D. Species and broader ecologies have evolved not only to survive but to be innovative, highly adapted and efficient. We can observe different species and natural systems and learn from them to design frameworks for organising low and zero carbon techniques and tools. Observation in permaculture is a key practice. In my 5 years keeping honeybees I have learnt much from this fascinating species. Firstly the shape of their hexagonal cells that makes up the comb in which the Queen lays her eggs and the workers store materials is a fundamental pattern that can be adapted to any space. The hexagonal cell itself remains almost exactly the same dimensions yet it can be joined with other cells in any direction, producing layers of comb that never touch, allowing the bees to fill up the void of a tree (or hive) yet reach all parts of the colony. In the organic shape of the combs, with an exact ‘bee space’ between each one, temperature can be maintained between 32 and an optimum of 35 degrees Celsius whatever the weather, as long as there are enough bees to ventilate in hot weather or cluster in winter. This range also allows honey to be produced from plant nectar and enzymes in a bee’s stomach and stored indefinitely. Honey in sealed jars has been found preserved in the tombs of the Pharaohs: a good lesson for building and food preservation. Bees are incredibly attuned to the weather and have a capacity to adapt that any farmer would aspire to. They have to be as their survival depends on being able to forage to maintain the growth of a colony. June is a critical time for bees as this is the time when they are building up their numbers and bringing on many young, to tend to the next babies and eventually become foragers. With a life cycle of just a few weeks, at this time the hive is busy making stores to feed up to 60,000 bees.
16
Permaculture Insights In early June I was surprised to check two of my hives and find that I had no eggs, larvae or brood. This was strange after the wonderful weather in May (when I had taken just a little honey from each hive). I had expected them to be booming yet I was apparently queenless. Had my queens died? I considered breeding new ones but my beekeeping mentor of 50 years’ experience told me to wait. “Bees know what they are doing. Often human interference can be to their detriment. Leave them alone and see what happens.” I waited. Within days of the discovery, it began to rain relentlessly for weeks. More than two months’ worth of rain fell in just two days in
some parts of Lincolnshire and parts of Britain had their lowest maximum temperature for mid-June for more than 100 years. The bees were unable to take to the wing and forage normally. The flowers and veg were a wash out. The nectar flow was very low. Then the sun came out again and July was hot and dry. The garden was parched but the nectar in our wildflower meadow flowed as the marjoram, cranesbill and knapweed all came into bloom. The bees came out in numbers and when I checked my hives, they were not queenless at all. There were plenty of babies in different stage of development waiting to be born – and so many stores! I can only assume that the bees knew that unseasonal bad weather was coming and that they would be unable to forage. The queen had therefore stopped producing new bees to adjust the size of the colony to the stores available. They were able to scale down and adapt before the rain started and then build the colony once it had stopped. Imagine if we humans had this level of insight into the future and the ability to adapt wisely to climate change? We would be doing everything we could to hold carbon dioxide at its current levels and make our communities, buildings, food stores and crops as resilient as possible. Imagine if we had the wisdom of the bees. Maddy Harland is the author of Fertile Edges and the co-founder and editor of Permaculture Magazine (permaculture.co.uk).

Spiritual Inspiration — BOOK REVIEWS
OPENING DOORS WITHIN by Eileen Caddy
MARY MAGDALENE’S LEGACY by Julie De Vere Hunt
MONEY, AND THE LAW OF ATTRACTION by Esther and Jerry Hicks
OWN YOUR ENERGY by Alla Svirinskaya
The latest edition of this beloved Findhorn and Cygnus classic features a new jacket and a foreword by Eileen’s son, Jonathan Caddy, providing poignant insights into an inspiring woman. This is one of the first and best “daily meditations” books, which has positively affected the lives of thousands since its initial publication in 1987. In 1953 Eileen started to receive guidance from a “still, small voice within”, and for the rest of her life her words helped to build and guide the legendary Findhorn community in Scotland. There’s a profound meditation for every day which you can read across the calendar year or dip into as it suits you. Each meditation draws you deeper into an encounter with the divine.
This enjoyable account by a Cygnus member tells the story of Mary Magdalene after the Crucifixion. As it says on the cover, ultimately it’s a story but it does carry a universal truth. Mainstream Christianity has chosen to sideline all the teachings and texts that have since been rediscovered as part of the Nag Hammadi library but there’s an amazing tale to be told of this enlightened female teacher who was the first person Christ appeared to after the Resurrection, and who went on to travel to France to continue both his teaching and bloodline. And it’s all interwoven with the Gnostic gospels and the profound teachings they contain.
This is a new edition of one of the most popular works based on the Teachings of Abraham, first published in 2008. Abraham is a non-physical being who has been channelling teachings to Esther and Jerry Hicks since 1985. This is one of the definitive books about the Law of Attraction, and one of the main forums for deployment of this law is money and material wealth generally, which is covered here. The teachings are clear and related in a conversational way and they also include working on your physical health. Health and prosperity are important foundations for anyone following a spiritual path and there is ample testimony to the fact that these teachings work.
Celebrated healer Alla Svirinskaya has put together a concise guide on how to reclaim your energy from all the energy “pathogens” of the 21st century. We know we need to clean and care for our bodies to stay healthy, but we also need to keep our personal energy clean and protected from toxic energy and energy vampires around us. In this book, Svirinskaya teaches us why this is so important for our health; there are also lessons on how to boost our aura’s immune system and strengthen our daily aura hygiene - all of which help us thrive in the modern world. By following her guidance on how to reclaim your unique energy identity, you’ll learn how to become a true magnet for positive vibrations in your life.

Award-winning author of The Enchanted Life Sharon Blackie weaves modern themes with existing folklore to create an exquisite work that feels both new and familiar. Interspersed with a selection of evocative illustrations by Helen Nicholson, these short stories powerfully reimagine mythic women whilst exploring our relationship with the natural world and the wildness within. 240 pp, 216 x 138 mm, Hardback, 2019, RRP £14.99

IF WOMEN ROSE ROOTED by Sharon Blackie
This book was previously available as a larger format paperback and it has now been reprinted in a more mass-market format. The author quotes D H Lawrence who wrote ‘we are bleeding at the roots’ because we are cut off from nature and the source of life. Sharon says Western women have lost control of their stories. She explores the inspiration that powerful females provide, both in ancient times and mythology, and today through contemporary communication such as blogging. The feminine is creative, even if that creativity is buried. It is part of the natural power to which each woman can reconnect. For women who feel separated from their true feminine self this is a rallying cry to rediscover those ancient roots and be part of the life force again. 416 pp, 197 x 127 mm, Paperback, 2019, RRP £8.99

MODERN WITCH TAROT DECK by Lisa Sterle
This is a wonderful new deck which is very closely based upon the classic Rider Waite Tarot. The set-ups are the same but the people can be different. There are many more women portrayed – for example, the Magician, the Hierophant and the Hermit are all female. The Chariot portrays a young woman on a motorbike and the Three of Pentacles shows a scene in a life drawing class – thus the images become more contemporary which makes the meaning more relevant to people today. Also there are many people of all races and skin tones portrayed, but the images are still true to their Rider Waite originals. It’s a beautiful deck that will appeal in particular to young people and especially women. Tarot is a vital tool that anyone can use and this would make a great gift to introduce newcomers to the art. 78 cards, 78 pp, 121 x 70 mm, Box Set, 2019, RRP £21.99

THE MYSTICAL DREAM TAROT by Janet Piedilato
Christmas is a wonderful time for tarot decks and here is another new one. It comes in a big box with a larger format paperback guidebook, full of explanations and advice on divinatory spreads. The Modern Witch Tarot is empowering, whereas this one goes deep into dream images and mystical landscapes. They are depicted in cool blues, greys and browns. Some of the cards are different from the traditional ones: The Fool is The Innocent, The Magician becomes The Master of Secrets and Death is Wise Fox. The deck carries high praise from Robert Moss and Stanley Krippner, both masters of dream exploration. This is a boxed set for going deep and for the twisting and turning journey of a lifetime. It’s a tarot you buy for yourself and treasure deeply. 78 cards, 160pp, 215 x 157 mm, Box Set, 2019, RRP £24.99

BOOK REVIEWS — Angels & Other Worlds THE MERCURY RETROGRADE BOOK by Yasmin Boland and Kim Farnell
ANGEL NUMBERS by Kyle Gray
There is a welcome renaissance of interest in astrology and this attractive hardback introduces Mercury Retrograde to the reader who is slightly beyond beginner. One of the co-authors is Yasmin Boland, creator of the Moonology diary which also happens to be one of our favourite products. It contains charming line drawings and a chart of Retrograde dates. Mercury is the planet of communication so panic and upset can ensue when it’s not working in our favour. This guidebook though gives us practical tools which help us to get constructive with the chaos and turn these fluid situations to our advantage. We can put all the significant dates in our diaries and thus channel all the energies to work with us.
Another amazing little book from talented (and bestselling!) Scottish medium Kyle Gray, which carries endorsements from Gabrielle Bernstein, Meggan Watterson and David Hamilton. The subtitle sums it up nicely: “The Message and Meaning Behind 11:11 and Other Number Sequences”. Ultimately then the book is a directory of numbers and number combinations, along with wise advice on what you can infer when these numbers appear on a repeated basis or in a highly significant setting. Angels are real and they are here to help us, and this will serve as a wonderful manual you can carry in your pocket and use to guide you around this magical world of ours. 320 pp, 180 x 112 mm, Paperback, 2019, RRP £12.99

HYBRIDS: SO YOU THINK YOU ARE HUMAN by Tanis Helliwell
❖ Code: 290406 ❖ Non-Member Price: £9.98 ❖ Member Price: £8.99
At last there’s a 25th anniversary edition of this underground classic in which Bob Frissell takes the broadest of views of everything going on in this weird world of ours. He then unites it all in a bravura account of what’s actually been happening behind the scenes, as energies are being raised on a planetary scale. The book covers Akhenaten, the Greys, the Left Eye of Horus, Pi and Navajo prophecies, amongst much else that’s ground-breaking and jaw-dropping. It’s a wild ride – including ten completely new chapters – that ultimately delivers an encouraging message that the birth of a new humanity is possible. It also includes comprehensive instructions on his Five-Step Breath Alchemy technique. It’s the story of nothing less than the co-creation of Heaven on Earth. 336 pp, 216 x 142 mm, Paperback, 2019, RRP £17.99

Tanis Helliwell is one of the most experienced authors and teachers when it comes to elementals and other forms of life that exist usually somewhere off the radar. After her two classic titles on leprechauns we have now Hybrids, where she looks at a variety of non-human beings who have interbred with humans. These include angels, giants, centaurs, elves, dolphins and many others. Many of us feel somehow dislocated from regular life, that we don’t fit in in various ways, but this will help us feel more powerful and self-realized, once we are reconciled to our non-human origins. It’s a fascinating exploration which, like most of Tanis’s books, is easy to read and full of illuminating stories, myths and historical snippets.
