William Bloom I loved Ann’s article in the last issue of this magazine, in which she described how she and Geoff started Cygnus. Elements of it are still echoing through my mind. Most of all I was touched by these words: Over the years we had become convinced that the great tome I had been shown in my dream was not a book in the conventional sense, but the Book of Life, sometimes known as the Book of Nature or the Book M (standing for Mundi – Latin for ‘world’). And the reason why it ‘can be read or understood by only a very few’ is that it is not so much a book as a language, inscribed in the natural world around us and in our own hearts, a language that can only be read with the eyes of the awakening soul... Ann’s writing here is so calm and imbued with a careful and humble wisdom. The whole of life, it suggests, is filled with mystery and meaning, and through calm contemplation, we can begin to expand our consciousness and discover what lies beneath the obvious world of appearances. This is the perfect attitude of the mystical student, isn’t it? All the great mystical traditions have suggested that spiritual enquiry requires a tranquil and reflective attitude, so spiritual seekers often seek retreat in monasteries, convents, sympa- thetic communities and in mountains, deserts and nature. You too may have a small space in your home or favourite places you regularly go to retreat. It is important for all of us that we are able to be and live like The Hermit when we need – just for a few minutes every day or sometimes for a life-time. This quiet attitude is not an optional add-on to the spiritual journey but an essential compo- nent, which we build into our foundations. I first learned about it when I began to study the great esoteric traditions and was fascinated, for example, by Pythagoras’ demand that his students first spend three years in silence before he would begin their education. I learned again about how important calm is when, for my doctorate, I was researching psychological attitudes during international crises. When decision-makers get aroused — for example, today in Israel where politicians and the military are worried about Iran’s nuclear threat — their ability to think intelligently is dumbed down as they get caught up in basic survival instincts and are no longer able to consider options. Recognising this problem, some psycholo- gists have suggested that there be at least one brave ‘joker’ in every important decision- making group. The Joker’s job is to challenge ‘groupthink’ and make sure other options are considered. The groupthink challenge The Joker is like The Fool in the Tarot pack. Everyone else in the group is stuck in the group

Calm Contemplation – the Key to What Lies Beneath groove, but The Fool has the courage to take a completely new route, stepping off the cliff if necessary and falling into the unknown. Being The Fool is often a painful role, because people may not understand and be threatened by your behaviour. One of my spiritual teachers once suggested to me that Christ was the most noble example of The Holy Fool. It takes courage to go against the instincts of the herd. Perhaps, in your own way, you have been The Fool in your family or work place or group of friends. Perhaps you are The Joker, the odd one out, who has not gone along with the pack. Perhaps you are the only one in your family or circle who has woken up to cosmic reality and now view the world with ‘the eyes of the awakening soul.’ This may have put you in a difficult position. You know that everything is not as it seems and there is an inner dimension to everything, that we are spiritual consciousness as well as flesh and blood. And so you may have a natural instinct to become The Hermit, escape the agita- tion of human affairs and explore other realities. Sometimes, however, just being The Hermit can be provocative and we are misunderstood and attacked just for being quiet. This can be painful. We thought we were being The Hermit but others see us as threatening, The Holy Fool. Images and archetypes The originators of The Tarot cards, however, knew that life was not so simply summed up in just two archetypal images — The Fool or The Hermit — and they built up a gallery of images and archetypes to inspire, stimulate and encourage us. You will probably be familiar with some of the most well known cards of the Tarot pack: The Magician. The High Priestess. The Empress. The Emperor. The Hierophant. The Chariot. The Wheel of Fortune. The Moon. The Sun. The Hanged Man. And so on. Recently, facing a challenging meeting, I did a Tarot reading for myself hoping for insights on how best to handle it. The cards told me that I had to trust everyone and be patient. The final card that I drew — the card which hints at the final outcome of the affair — was Judg- ment, a dramatic image of an Angel blasting a trumpet and heralding a new beginning. I laughed. It was an encouraging inspiration. The great gift of The Tarot is that it asserts the diversity of life, cosmos and human experience. Life is never as simple as Good or Bad. We might want to stay fixed in one role or behaviour — I know several Hermits, Fools, Empresses and Magicians — but in fact we are complex creatures and life makes complex demands on us. Sometimes, it is appropriate to be The Hermit. At other times we need to glow like The Sun or be forceful and moving like The Chariot. There are many options, many archetypes, many angels and spirits.

So if we return to Ann’s insight again, yes, life is a book to be carefully read by the awakened soul. But remember, that book is not only around us;; it is also inside us. In the words of Hermetic wisdom As it is above, so it is below. The macrocosm, all creation, is within the microcosm, within you and me. Michael O’Connell Usury, otherwise known as the debt-based economic paradigm, has progressed over the last 300 years or so from its origins as a cunning sleight of hand, to a point where private banking institutions have arrogated to themselves unfettered supra-governmental powers to be sole creators of interest-bearing credit into the economy. Usurped might be a better word to describe how our governments out of fear and cowardice, aided by a persuasive cocktail of lethal force and bribery, came to surrender their most sacred duty of being the sole issuers of our money. As soon as that particular switch is thrown, all governments are bought. Instead of faithfully carrying out the policies that we the people define as socially desirable, they tirelessly devote themselves to the task of farming the people on behalf of faceless international financiers. The logic of democracy We all like the idea of democracy don’t we? You know that thing ‘government by the people for the people’? That which guarantees our personal sovereignty and protects us from the things others may do that they would not like done to themselves. Democracy enshrines our collective right of self-determination without being harmed whilst placing constraints upon ourselves that we should do no harm. The internal logic of such an idea when rolled out to its ultimate conclusion embraces and protects the rights of the whole biosphere and all who sail in her. But alas, I’m sorry to have to break the news to you, although I suspect that you may have guessed already, that our beloved democracy, the thing for which people have died and shed blood for, is but a fig leaf concealing the priapic apparatus of parasitic predators who will always be at war with us so long as we let them.

Democracy and debt cannot live under the same roof. It would seem that the real agenda of politicians is to get us to cower, like them, under the idea of the ‘dreaded deficit’ as if it were a space-ship the size of 20 football pitches from the planet Zog pointing its mass extinction ray at us. We are told that the Zogians will most certainly use it if we fall behind with our interest payments. When you strip the teflon sophistry from a politician’s rhetoric, you will invariably find at the bottom of it a weaselly argument supporting the ridiculous assertion that the good life, for which we have all the skills and resources to create for each other, somehow cannot be paid for. Cuts? Cut the crap more like. Everyone should know by now that money always was, and always will be, imaginary. It attains its functionality through our sheer belief in it. As such, there is an infinite amount of it and everything can be paid for. Economists know that bankers have been letting their imaginations run away with themselves for years. Who else had the power to swell the global money supply 8 per cent year on year for the last decade with interest bearing thin air? The creation of more money When you go into a bank for a loan the money never existed before you asked for it. At the click of a keyboard , hey presto there it is. When you leave the bank, the sweat of your brow, your home and your thoughts are on the line and in harness. Every loan is a deposit. A good analogy would be to see it as a kind of inflationary/deflationary fishing expedition. Create a vacuum in the money supply so that everybody has to place themselves on the bankers’ hook and line for credit in order to simply exchange their goods and services. Create another vacuum, and the nation’s assets get reeled in at knockdown prices. You’ve got to hand it to them, it is a pretty slick way of divesting the people of the world of

all that they own. Even a 12-year-old can work out that if 97 per cent of all the world’s money has been borrowed into existence, then there can never be enough to pay it all back. Here lies the genesis of eternal debt with its invisible incubus of compound interest riding upon its shoulders and getting hungrier by the day. In whose interest is this interest that drives the commoditization of all things conceivable, be it a million acres of rainforest in Brazil or a body part extracted from an abducted child in Romania? Debt-based money systems running on economic anti-matter simulate black holes in the way they hoover up the biosphere, turning it into the digitized blips that top up the

A Matter of Life or Debt macro-economic ocean. In reality it is an ocean of tears shed by humanity for all its broken dreams in this broken promise land. Usury needs to be identified and branded as a crime against humanity, its perpetrators dragged from the shadows and into the dock of the International Court of Justice. They would get away with it though as the crime is of such all-pervading enormity that no human mind could possibly grasp the scope of it, and even if they could, it would take lifetimes to read the charge sheet. Wealth creation in the community Usury breeds usurers and makes predators of us all. It creates a world where everyone sees everyone else as a mark to be preyed upon and all where all relationships are market mediated. It is therefore corrosive to human decency whilst institutionalising criminality. Debt peddlers deal in a substance deadlier than plutonium. Banks, like neutron bombs going off on every high street corner, destroy the soul of the nation whilst leaving its assets intact. Isn’t it time we demand of banks that they devote themselves entirely to the business of fostering wealth creation in the community? And what of the children, should not their sublimity be society’s highest goal? Yet we betray them. We have mortgaged their future with the dwindling resources of the earth as sole collateral. We the progenitors of future generations are bankrolling their demise with the proceeds of their stolen inheritance. We add the further indignity of making them pay the cost of their slavery. I’ve often scoffed at the idea of original sin believing it had no place in the philosophy of the Nazarene who taught that man is innately good. I think I would accord with that, qualifying it with the thought that we are work in progress, and that it might be some time before the lion lies down with the lamb. But scoff ye not too soon for the

theological fiction of original sin has attained new heights of meaning in the cathedrals of Mammon. The black art of money multiplication has conjured it into existence and cast its yoke upon the shoulders of the unborn. Do bankers have children? I’m not really sure, perhaps they clone them. If they did, what kind of world would they want them to grow up in? Our religious leaders, who are charged with the protection of our souls, seem oblivious to the real theatre of war between good and evil upon which outcome the future of the planet depends. Now that the ‘design flaw by design’ in the economic system has been exposed for what it is, what do we do about it? I might get a lot of support for an idea to have bankers ‘renditioned’ to a mildly radioactive atoll in the South Pacific. The condition of their parole being to come up with a solution to the world’s economic problems that would fit on the back of a postcard. I suspect I would receive a flurry of cards saying something like this: ‘Wish you were here. By weight of numbers bolt the revolving door between bankers and political institutions. Instruct your sovereign elected government to restore to themselves the sole right to issue interest-free credit into the economy. Yours truly, glowing in the dark, Fred the Shred.’ Politicians would no doubt jump up in the House of Commons and exclaim in mock horror ‘But printing money is inflationary!’ Not if the amount of money introduced was exactly commensurate with the value of the exchange of goods and services in a designated financial period. Governments of the past would have been hard pressed to do this on account of their limited powers of data collection and number-crunching capabilities. Now with the advent of the silicon chip the all-important calculation can be done with a reasonably high

level of precision. It could be a selfadjusting system where the amount of interest-free money introduced was counterbalanced with how much lending the banks were doing. Because we can’t trust the banks or the politicians with the issuance of our money, we’d have to establish an apolitical branch of the civil service called something like The National Credit Office to undertake this most important duty. This singular act would put the backbone back into democracy so we that we can all at last get off our knees. It would represent an important milestone in the long march towards the abolition of slavery. Where would we put our detoxed and newly liberated money? Public sector infrastructural projects, health, education, wealth creation via new energy technologies, tax reduction, and finally the all-important basic income. Basic income is an idea that has been around for years in the social credit movement founded on the ideas of CH Douglas.Social credit proposes that every man, woman and child in the nation should be paid a basic income. Not a grudging dole, but a fair cut of the national inheritance of Great Britain plc. How strong a nation we would be if we were empowered to fulfil our duties of care towards each other. Barbara Wilder Each of us came into this life with life themes, such as illness, death of loved ones, feelings of low self esteem, never having enough love, or money, or success. These life themes aren’t random occurrences, but what we chose to work with for our own soul’s growth and expansion and for the growth and expansion of humanity’s collective consciousness. We are not islands unto ourselves;; we are part of the greater human beingness. But having said that, there are times when we must be alone to go inward to polish our mosaic tile – which is part of the great mosaic masterpiece all human beings are creating together. And save this is one of those times. 40%! If you find that one of your life themes is the pain around Money, you are not alone. All of us, from the poorest to the wealthiest, share in this theme, because in the old paradigm Money was imbued with the energies of fear, greed, lack, anger, poverty, extreme wealth (as opposed to comfortable wealth for all), power over others, war, hunger, and domination. This has caused spiritual people to disdain money, thinking of it as a necessary evil. Some believe that the only way to be free of painful money issues personally and globally is to get rid of Money altogether. There is a lot of discussion and experiment- ing with ideas of going back to the barter system, or creating new currencies to replace Money. But though these are noble efforts, they aren’t practical or effective. Barter worked in earlier eras because we lived in small communities. Now seven billion people live on the planet, necessitating a more fluid currency. And not effective, because creating a new currency doesn’t address the root issue, which is the false belief that there is a limited amount of Money in the world, and we must fight and even die to get our share.

The frequeny of abundance One thing we do know about the new paradigm is that Money will vibrate at the frequency of Love and abundance for all. It will be understood that Money is a gift of Love from Source to support every one of us. We won’t have a new currency;; Money will have a new consciousness. For this shift from Money based on the old paradigm of fear, greed, and power over others, into Money based on Love, abundance, and goodwill for all, we each must heal our own personal money issues, and transform Money into Love within ourselves so that it becomes part of the new mosaic. The

Money is a Gift of Love knowledge that there is enough for all will help us let go of ego attachment to being better or worse than others because we have more or less Money, and allow ourselves to flow into our own life paths and our own divinity. Truth is, Money is part of the holy universe. It is here to support us all, and all it takes for this truth to be made manifest is for us to heal the feelings of lack, fear, greed, and anger within ourselves. And each time we heal a tiny part of these feelings, we heal a part of the greater human consciousness around Money.

Mikael Nordfors I was lucky enough to grow up in a family where the teachings of Martinus (18901981), a Danish seer and mystic, were available. Although he is little-known outside Scandinavia his philosophy is so logical, coherent, optimistic and beautiful that you may be interested to learn a little more about him. In 1949 the British philosopher and mystic Paul Brunton read a summary of Martinus’ teachings and a translation of his book ‘Mankind and the World Picture’. These inspired Brunton to study with Martinus, and from May to August 1952 he lived with his wife at the Martinus Institute in Copenhagen where he spent 2-4 evenings a week with him. The following words were written in the 1950s by Brunton as part of a Foreword to Martinus’s book, Mankind and the World Picture: When I first met Martinus some years ago in Copenhagen, I found him a simple, unpretentious individual who dressed, spoke, and lived in quite an ordinary manner. No one looking at his physical exterior could easily guess that it concealed a man who must be regarded as the outstanding living seer of his own country. He was grown up in very simple and primitive circumstances, without any higher education. His main reading so far had been the Bible. Hitherto, the two signs indicative of the course of his future development had been a deeply religious temperament and the resolute adoption of a fixed attitude when confronted by any situation calling for a moral decision. He then always asked himself, ‘What would Jesus have done in these circumstances?’ The answer that evolved out of his own mind became his guide for action. One day someone lent him a little book about Theosophy, a subject about which Martinus knew nothing at all, and handed it to him with the suggestion that it might be found interesting. Martinus, unaccustomed to reading as he was, idly turned over two or three pages and then his eyes alighted on a reference to ‘meditation’. This single word was enough to ring a bell deep inside his inner consciousness. Obeying a sudden urge, he sat down in a chair and started to meditate on God. Almost immediately his first ‘cosmic’ experience followed.

Life, an Eternal Love Story Far off he noticed the appearance of a tiny speck of radiant light. It then moved slowly towards him, enlarging itself as it did so, until it took the visible shape of a man – none other than the master Jesus, himself. This luminous form then entered into Martinus’ own physical body and since that time has lived within him as the Christ consciousness. The next day he went into the same deep state of introverted consciousness again, and during this experience there was revealed to him the fact that God was present in every part of the universe, that a perfect pattern was hidden behind the movements of everything and the lives of every creature within it. There was meaning and purpose behind the activities of suns, stars, planets, seasons, and all the grand panorama of Nature. What he thus saw intuitively constituted a large revelation which he set himself to communicate to his fellow men. An eternal evolutionary spiral Perhaps Martinus’s greatest spiritual accomplishment was to give a truly satisfying and thorough explanation of where evil, or ‘unpleasant good’ as he sometimes called it, comes from. By revealing this secret to humanity, he gave us an understanding that can relieve us, once and for all, of any fears of eternal damnation or of not being good enough, and take away all reasons for wars and intolerance. According to Martinus life is an eternal evolutionary spiral, in which all of us and everything we come across are eternal beings on their never ending cosmic journey. Nothing, says Martinus, is ever lost or forgotten; there is no injustice. Everyone has been enlightened countless times in the past, and will become enlightened countless times in the future. Yet Martinus does not expect us to believe a single word of his on trust. He invites us all to observe carefully our inner and outer worlds, so that ultimately, we will see for ourselves whether or not his statements are true. When you truly perceive the greatness of life – not an impossible feat but an unavoidable consequence of your own natural evolution – you will see how every breath you have ever taken, every piece of dust, every catastrophe, everything you have experienced in this and your other lifetimes has been nothing but an eternal loving embrace between you and God, and when you understand this, you will have no reason ever again to become intolerant, afraid or unhappy. What is more, if you

happen to forget this, that is also part of the perfection! Besides thoroughly explaining the mystery of evil, Martinus also explains – in the most logical and uplifting way I have ever come across – where the wisdom in nature comes from and why we have so many unhappy marriages and sexual problems in our present society. He also gives directions on how to create a future united world without wars, pollution or poverty. A glorious awareness According to Martinus, life can thus be defined as an everlasting love story between God and his sons and daughters who include all living beings: humans, animals, plants, minerals and also purely spiritual beings. eternal divine kinship. And I see that this relationship can only flourish in light, happiness and bliss if your great commandment is respected: to love God above all things and your neighbour as yourself, and that this is the fulfilment of all laws. I thank you that, by means of a temporal, physical condition, you have allowed me to awaken to full awareness of an everlasting life, in which I am contained by your love and forever surrounded by living beings who are precious to me, no matter where I might find myself, and no matter with whom I happen to come into contact, because you have given me the ability to see and recognise the fire or radiance from your scintillating face in every living being. This glorious awareness, my friends, is where we have come from and where we are going. So, resting in that assurance, what need have we to fear? Matter and Spirit – Where Do You Draw the Line?

Many human beings have experienced enlightenment or revelations of the Divine. However, the wisest ones will tell you that it’s a life’s work (or more likely many lives!) to explore and learn how to manifest the wisdom thus received, and allow it to express itself throughout one’s whole being and life. One of the big questions that often comes up on such a spiritual journey is: now that I know myself to be so utterly embraced by divine love, ought I still to use material means to achieve the things I desire, or should I seek to rely entirely on the power of thoughts and beliefs, since these are what determine my experiences? In some situations that question is easier to answer than in others. None of us would think twice, for instance, about using a car or bike to go to work – nobody’s expecting us at our current stage of evolution to teleport there, even if we could! Nor would we hesitate to eat a meal when our body needs nourishment – there are people who have learned to nourish themselves without food*, but for most of us it’s easier just to eat, isn’t it? Conventional or alternative?

When it comes to our health, however, we can sometimes be a bit more undecided. Do we use conventional medicines which may be very far from natural and wholesome for our bodies? Do we stick to alternative remedies which are at least easier biologically for our bodies to identify and use? Or do we, as some people do, work purely on our beliefs and psychology, in the hope that, if we align ourselves more perfectly with the divine, our physical symptoms will disappear? On my own healing journey, I’ve tried all three approaches both singly and in combination, and have found that a combination of all three works best for me. So whereas I started out with all kinds of prejudices and reservations against conventional medicines, nowadays I do not discriminate

at all between conventional and alternative. My only questions are 1) Is this remedy likely to work in my body, and 2) is it likely to damage my immune system or vital organs? I did try using mental/spiritual methods alone, particularly during the second year of my journey when for all kinds of reasons I found it strangely impossible to get the physical treatments I would have liked, but this brought me up against a crucial realisation: that

whatever problems I had lurking in my subconscious ‘cellar’, that may have been contributing to the cancer, they were probably going to be too big for me to deal with on my own, and also would require more consciousness to be brought to their resolution than was possible for me with quick methods like Psych-K and EFT. And in addition they would require time for their healing, time which, given the extent of my cancer, I was not at all convinced I would have unless I ‘bought it’ with physical remedies.

I think this is quite likely to be the case with a lot of cancer patients, cancer being something of a ‘final warning message’ from our bodies. But just because you have a final warning, that doesn’t mean you are supposed to get sent off the playing field altogether. Far better that we do our best to turn the illness into an evolutionary force, by learning whatever we can from the situation, facing our fears, letting go of our attachments, past conditionings, beliefs and dogmas – whatever they are – and doing whatever it takes to serve the lifeforce in our bodies. Because even if we don’t ultimately succeed in getting well from our disease, we can be certain that we are part of a beautiful story that the whole of humanity is composing together – the story in which disease and suffering are overcome, and humanity moves towards less painful ways of learning its lessons – and I for one find that a very comforting thought. Nothing is ever wasted. A continuum of varying levels

So, although many people – myself included – sometimes find that psycho-spiritual approaches on their own are not sufficient to banish diseases, I believe that we will always notice, if we look closely enough, that physical remedies and improvements come to us in a way that keeps pace with the changes we are making inwardly. In this way, matter and spirit work hand in hand. And actually, why shouldn’t they? Matter is, after all, spirit as well. It’s just that it exists at a lower density. Only in our minds is it separate. By seeing ourselves not as living in a ‘material’ world that is somehow different and separate from spirit, but as part of a continuum of varying levels of density, all of which – however unlikely it may seem – are expressions of God’s love, we are released from the matter-spirit dilemma and placed right in the current of divine compassion, where all remedies, be they material or spiritual, psychological or physical, allopathic or homeopathic, can come to us at the right time, as the divine gifts they truly are. © 2012 by Ann Napier *See Life from Light by Michael Werner & Thomas Stockli, 170707, £6.99

Philip Weeks What is fasting? A fast is the avoidance of all or the majority of foods. There are different types of fast; some involve drinking just water or juices, while others are mono fast, involving eating just one type of food such as grapes for a predetermined number of days. Fasting is probably the most ancient of all self-healing techniques. To our modern minds, it may seem illogical that avoiding food can assist anything but weight loss. However, done in the right way, fasting can be one of the most powerful selfhealing options available to us. All ancient systems of medicine include fasting as part of their therapeutic regimes. In ancient Chinese medicine, fasting is an integral part of Taoist spiritual and medical disciplines, usually involving the drinking of water and medicinal teas. Even a short fast (1 to 3 days) will accelerate elimination from your liver, kidneys, lungs, bloodstream and skin. (Bragg 2004) Without food to digest, the body goes into a different gear and speeds up the elimination of metabolic waste. Research in the twentieth century has also demonstrated the benefits of fasting, or the ‘fasting cure’ – particularly in cases of toxic poisoning where no antidote is available. Sixteen patients poisoned by the ingestion of rice oil contaminated with poly-chlorobiphenyls (PCBs) in Taiwan voluntarily took part in a trial fast, of either seven or ten days’ duration. The participants had been poisoned approximately between 26 and 35 months prior to the trial. During fasting, they followed a fixed dietary schedule, consuming

Every patient showed signs of improvements in their poison-related symptoms, some of them dramatic in the relief of severe headache, lumbago, arthritis, cough, mucous and acne eruptions (Imamura and Tung 1984). Other studies have demonstrated that fasting can promote healthy blood sugar levels in people with diabetes, and reduce the severity and frequency of seizures among people with epilepsy (Allen 1915; Guelpa 1910; Lennox and Cobb 1928). A study in Scandinavia in which patients undertook a fast followed by a vegetarian diet for one year had similar results (KjeldsenKragh et al. 1991). I have also observed improvements in patients with inflammatory bowel conditions such as colitis and Crohn’s disease. one patient managed to avert an operation to remove her colon by drinking just carrot juice for ten days. To this day, she remains free of symptoms. I once dropped a large weight on my right foot, creating a two-inch wound, which then got contaminated by infected water. This developed into septicaemia and I had the fever from hell. Through fasting and the use of a huge amount of Echinacea, however, I managed to cure myself – though not without overdosing on the alcoholic tincture and getting slightly tipsy! It took about three days for the swelling to go down and for the

sepsis to resolve. After a week I had made a full recovery. So, fasting can be beneficial in a number of different cases and, by resting the gut, can promote healing processes that would not otherwise occur. When someone has a disease or health condition it should, however, always be done under close supervision, and serious conditions should be closely monitored by a health professional. In my early days of practice I had a patient who had severe Crohn’s disease, which developed into a bowel abscess. Even though we tried natural intervention, the condition deteriorated and, eventually, life-saving surgery was necessary. Emotional and spiritual aspects of fasting I know many people who report that fasting gives them clarity of thought during periods of confusion or indecision in their lives. This would explain why fasting is encouraged as a spiritual discipline to help us feel more connected with our spiritual selves. In Islam, Ramadan is a fasting regime. In Christianity there is Lent. Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. In India there is fasting on the appearance day of Lord Krishna and other saints. In Vaisnavism, an Indian spiritual tradition, every two weeks with the cycle of the moon there is a day called Ekadasi. on this day, people abstain from grains, legumes and pulses. Some devotees go even further and fast from all food to maximise the spiritual benefit. And one day each year there is nir-jal, which is Sanskrit for ‘without water’. It is believed that fasting on this day increases one’s love and connection to the divine. Fasting can restore equilibrium and sense of self. I have known many people who, after experiencing trauma, have used fasting to get their lives back on track. Fasting allows us to review our relationship with food. When changes occur in our emotional state, we often turn to so-called comfort foods – especially sugars and carbohydrates. Fasting can bring emotional issues to light, suggesting that we may be eating to block their impact. Short fasts can be really beneficial for most people; the emphasis is not on the absence of food, but on providing your body with lots of easily digestible nutrients for a short period of time to promote and encourage cleansing and healing. For the final word on fasting, let’s return to the Essene Gospel of Peace at the Vatican: Purify, therefore, the temple that the Lord of the temple may dwell therein and occupy a place that is worthy of him. A light within a light The Angel of Hope doesn’t look like any other angel I have ever seen. He looks like a massive flame. Within this very bright flame I am shown a faint human appearance, which is masculine, and a beautiful dazzling emerald green colour, holding a torch – like an Olympic flame. The brightness of the Angel of Hope looks different to any other angel; I think this is because it’s a light within a light. The Angel of Hope is enormous, the height of a mature tree. When I

It’s quite strange – it’s as if he’s very far away but right in front of me at the same time, hard as that is to explain. He seems to be forever moving, turning back constantly to encourage whoever he is leading at the time with a gentle smile. His expression is one of love and encouragement.

Lately I have been seeing the Angel of Hope a lot more than I would have previously. I probably see him every day. People seem to be needing hope so much at this time. I saw a man in his mid fifties walking towards the office surrounded by five or six angels and they were all whispering in his ear. The Angel of Hope appeared in front of him, beckoning to the man giving him the courage and strength to believe that there was a future for him. He was helping him to see that going to the Social Welfare Office was a new beginning rather than an end. The angels are constantly giving us hope – because hope is such an important thing. Hope as I keep saying makes the impossible possible. Hope gives us the courage and the strength to live our lives to the full even when things are very tough. Lo and behold, the owners were angel lovers, and all the rooms were named after Archangels. Living as part of a family I find there is a constant juggling of people’s needs and I know I can only be happy if everyone’s needs are being met in some way. the one always in control, to do what I’d always done when confused, to go to my higher self and ask for advice. So I gave myself the time, asked and, more importantly, listened. Sure enough the answers came. Perhaps this is being offered ‘as well as’ what you can do for yourself spiritually; do not feel you are ‘betraying’ your beliefs and teachings. Reiki has only ever been pure and simple and intended to work ‘alongside’ conventional medicine. NEVER instead of. Put your ego to one side and listen to your inner knowing. I still was not totally happy about this, but I decided from this message that it would be ok to follow this chemical route, that I could still care for myself spiritually as well, accepting Reiki, Shiatsu and gentle massage from my colleagues to nourish my mind and body. That in fact I was hitting the demon cancer with a massive double whammy!! Attacking it spiritually and chemically. Showing it that it was not welcome in my body. I’m pleased to say, this has worked for me, I am in my second year of remission, still practicing AND receiving Reiki. I have felt in no way compromised by my choice, those feelings of ‘betrayal’ have been allayed. I guess I would like to say it’s ‘OK’ to accept that bit of chemical help if deemed necessary. This I feel, reinforces what Ann says about our own free will, our determination to live, be in the now and enjoy all the beauty around us. For it is just that beauty and life that sustains us. A sunny day, a bird singing, trees blowing in the wind, a smile from a dear friend. A hug from a dearly loved son (in my case!) or daughter. The patterns of raindrops falling on a pond, the beauty is endless. Live and enjoy it all; it’s FREE!
