ANN NAPIER
They say writers usually write what they most need to read. Well, that’s certainly true in my case! What I’ve been reading over and over again recently is our newly published 2011 calendar – Know That You Are Loved – which contains words from our recent editorials, together with photographs by Janet Baxter, who does our cover images every month. ‘What?’ I hear you wondering. ‘Haven’t you been reading proper books then? I thought you loved reading?’ Well, facing what most people would say is a terminal illness, your whole attitude to life changes – not because you will it to; it’s something that just happens. Lots of things you used to enjoy or find important no longer ‘compute’, and tiny things you used to overlook suddenly seem almost painfully beautiful and precious, so that you find yourself bursting into tears just for the sheer love of them. So, yes, I’m not reading much at the moment. Books like Lark Rise to Candleford or Cranford (see p. 12), which draw you into a world in which cars, petrol fumes, tarmac, phones, TVs, electric lights and global threats of all kinds do not feature, and in which people live simpler lives, much closer to nature, are helping to draw me back into life in this world, so I read those. And yes, I read the calendar. Life-saving truths Why? Well, on our fridge Geoff and I have a sticker which reads, ‘We already know... life is just remembering...’ We like that expression! And each page of the calendar focuses on something that, deep in our souls, all of us know full well. But how important it is to be reminded of the eternal verities, many times a day if possible, because there is so much in our world that would deny these life-saving truths, and lead us into a dark maze of our own making. For August, for example, the calendar highlights the following phrase: ‘Seen from the eternal heart of the universe, all your choices are right choices, all your falterings are advantages, and you never did anything wrong.’ When I wrote that, and most of the other phrases chosen for the calendar, I had a strong sense of ‘non-authorship’, if you know what I mean. I felt that, wherever those words came from, they didn’t come from me – I was just the person who was privileged to be holding a pen at the time! So I hope you’ll understand when I say that I find this particular phrase most healing, every time I read it. I can feel my heart breathing a sigh of relief and then
Love Is Who We Are
sucking in a great lungful of clean air! And if I’m not much mistaken, many of you, particularly if you, too, are facing oppressive times, will feel the same way when you read this. A love to share It was with the aim of helping all of us to remember what we deeply know, but so often forget, that the calendar was created. Sarah and I sat up till well past midnight one night, marvelling at all Janet Baxter’s magical photographs and choosing the ones that would evoke the spirit of the words as accurately as possible, and then deciding in which order the words should appear. Such love went into its making, and it’s love we want to share... It would be lovely to share with you, too, the special happening that inspired many of the words in the calendar. It happened during my two-month spell in hospital earlier this year. Pierre Pradervand (see p. 5) rang, and told me the joyful news that Roger McGowen
You can read more about Pierre’s correspondence with Roger McGowen in our latest publication, Messages of Life from Death Row which you’ll find on p. 5 – a man wrongfully imprisoned on death row in Texas State Penitentiary, for whom Pierre and others had been campaigning for years – had just heard that his death sentence had been commuted to life. This meant that, since he had already been in prison for 23 years – half his life in fact! – and that at the time of his condemnation the life sentence normally lasted 25 years, he could theoretically be free in just two years time! Imagining how I would feel if, like Roger, I were suddenly to experience such a magnificent transformation of my fortunes was not difficult, since, like many cancer patients, I was often overcome by the very human belief that I was ‘imprisoned’ in a painful body, being ‘punished’ for sins I hadn’t committed, and awaiting a ‘death sentence’ that could be carried out at any time. Pierre talked of Roger as being ‘at the end of the road to hell’, and how, even in that darkest of dark places, he had somehow found the strength to bless his jailers and find a sense of gratitude for his experiences. Roger had even told Pierre that he wouldn’t have missed a single moment of his experience in that jail. And also that he was con-
vinced that God had a perfect plan for his life. Remembering your power Hearing this struck me, as it were, right between the eyes, and provided a kind of landing place for many thoughts that had been circling round and round in my head like birds waiting to roost; thoughts in which I had till then been unable to fully trust or believe, because they spoke of an alternative, much more liberating and joyful way to interpret what was happening to me, a way in which I saw that there was a perfect, divine plan underlying everything that was going on, and that – even if I couldn’t read the map, I certainly was not lost. But from that moment, I knew I could put my absolute trust in those thoughts, and even raise the courage to share them with others. I also knew that if Roger could bless his situation, and find a way to transform hell into heaven, so could I. And so, dear friend, can you. If called upon to do so, you may cherish the certainty that you, too, have the power to bring your most beautiful, divine humanity into whatever lifesituations are placed before you. Love is who we are. We just need to remember. With all our love, Ann, Geoff, Sarah and the Cygnus Team

But what happens when the unknown bursts into our lives, leaving us with the feeling that none of the maps we have can show us the way any longer? What happens if we are suddenly plunged into a situation of such unbearable emotional or physical pain that we simply do not have the strength to use all our formerly trusted practices and beliefs?
What Ann Napier knows beyond any doubt is that no one is alone, however it may seem. Our Cygnus Calendar for 2011 – Know That You Are Loved – brings Ann’s words of affirmation and reassurance that wherever you may be, there still exists a lifeline from the heart of the universe that is connected directly with you (because actually, in your deepest essence, it is you). You may not have felt this lifeline yet, but we promise you it is there, and hope that these texts, combined with Janet Baxter’s stunning photographs of nature, will help you to feel it.

SNOW ON SNOW CD The Albion Christmas Band
Snow on Snow is a lovely, festive collection of traditional folk songs and carols, with a few poems and stories entwined, to create a great atmosphere from the very first track. It reminds me of the Christmastime concerts and gatherings in the rural community of my childhood: a few musicians – concertina, melodeon, guitars, banjo and percussion – pure voices, songs that you can sing along to within a couple of choruses, and great tunes for having a dance, too. The Albion Christmas Band features the extensive experience and combined talents of Ashley Hutchings, Kellie While, Simon Care and Simon Nicol, whom you may know from the likes of Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. Pop this CD on to bring the ideal mood for writing your cards, baking mince pies or decorating your tree.

Another wonderful selection of folk songs and storytelling, this gem of a CD evokes the feelings of times gone by, providing an escape from the rigours of our modern hectic lifestyle. Inspired by a stage production of Flora Thompson’s, Lark Rise to Candleford [see p.12, 201121], there are some traditional songs and some written about the characters. Just relax and enjoy – toe tapping or dancing may also ensue!

GUIDANCE FOR 2011
MESSAGES FROM SPIRIT
All plants and animals are influenced by the cycles of the natural world, and you can greatly enhance your garden yields if you perform certain tasks like planting and pruning in harmony with these lunar and planetary cycles. This is a gardening manual for all seasons: more than just a lunar calendar, it is an everyday workbook of down-to-earth, natural advice and organic know-how that shows you how to get superior results. With in-depth explanation of the effects and their causes, Nick Kollerstrom presents his long-established, tried and tested guide covering October 2010 to December 2011. Tap into the energy cycles of the moon the organic way – and grow better plants!
There has been such a flurry of books about angels in recent months, and it’s been quite a task to choose amongst them all, to know which one will best provide the guidance you need to help you invite angels into your life, recognise their presence and understand their messages. Well, Theresa Cheung’s How to See Your Angels well and truly fits the bill. She gives a solid foundation, describing angels from all over the world, giving information on guardian angels, archangels, spirits and departed loved ones. You will also learn about the nature and purpose of angels, their signs and communication and how to call upon them in times of need. My particular favourite section is her exploration of angels entering our dreams, as this is often the first experience of making contact with spirit. This really is a must for the newly intrigued and has loads for the experienced, too.

GHOSTS & EARTHBOUND SPIRITS Linda Williamson
Have you ever sensed a presence in your house, glimpsed a shadow out of the corner of your eye or heard inexplicable noises? It may be, says Linda Williamson, that you are sharing your home with an earthbound spirit – an ordinary man and woman who, instead of passing into the spirit world when they died, has remained trapped and bound to this world. As a medium, Linda encounters many such spirits. Very few are evil, most are lost and confused. Some do not even realise that they have died. She shows that, with love and compassion they can be released, so that they can move forward to the place where they belong. In Ghosts and Earthbound Spirits, Linda explains what to do if you come into contact with such a spirit, and gives insight into what it is like in that strange dimension between this world and the next.

SOUL SURVIVOR Andrea & Bruce Leininger with Ken Gross
Soul Survivor is the intriguing account of a World War II fighter pilot’s reincarnation. When James was just two, he began to suffer nightmares, describing terrifying scenes of a plane on fire. His parents were at a loss to help him until he said just three things: Corsair, Natoma and a name. From these tantalising glimpses into a life that ended sixty years ago, James’ parents pieced together the puzzle to try to find an answer that could end his torment. They found only one solution to the endless coincidences that surrounded every detail in James’ life – the crew and mission of the USS Natoma Bay, and the last flight of a World War II fighter pilot.

“I could not put this book down, it was so intriguing. As a believer in reincarnation I found it absolutely fascinating how a young boy could record such accurate details of war planes, and this book confirmed my beliefs. It must have been hard for the parents of this child as non-believers, but in the end they had to accept that this was the case as the evidence was so strong. A lovely book which brought me to tears in parts.” Neshla Avey, on Soul Survivor
PIERRE PRADERVAND
There is a very beautiful Indian story about a man named Mohan who, like possibly millions through history, wandered through their land looking for the true teacher who would lead them to illumination. Mohan finally discovered the teacher of Vedanta who satisfied his craving for an intellectual understanding. When his teacher died, he hit the road again until he ended up in a village where he became a teacher of the spiritual path. One young man in the village, Saralah, was sure Mohan was the teacher he was looking save for and spent most of his time hanging 42%! around Mohan’s hut, awaiting the sacred mantra that would free him and even – unbeknownst of Mohan – sleeping in front of his door should Mohan need some midnight service. But the latter had a very poor opinion of Saralah, viewing him as a half wit. Once, getting up in the middle of the night to relieve himself, Mohan hits Saralah’s body outstretched in front of his door. Irritated, he roars ‘Always you.’ Saralah, taking this for the long awaited mantra, falls at the feet of Mohan who orders him to leave the village, never to return until Mohan calls him. So Saralah leaves in a state of total elation. Day in and day out, by storm or sunshine, whether rejected or welcomed, starving or nourished… he has but one thought and one thought only in mind: always You. He sees the divine absolutely everywhere, in the fields and the stars, in the crocodiles and the cows, the hateful and the kind, the rich and the poor, the priest and the prostitute. For him, there is only You, always You, You everywhere, at all times, in all circumstances. And his whole being starts emanating the radiance, quiet power and love which are the hallmarks of the Presence. The Presence One day he arrives in a poor village where the only child of a destitute widow is being led to the funeral pyre. For the poor woman, it is the greatest tragedy that can befall her, and the villagers beg Saralah to pray for the child’s revival. Saralah explains he has no magical powers, but that he will pray the mantra his teacher taught him. Sitting next to the pyre where the boy has been laid, he totally abandons himself to the Presence with the attitude of complete trust and especially unconditional gratitude the mantra expresses for him. Suddenly the child comes back to life. The whole village calls it a miracle, and the people kneel in front of Saralah, offering him their modest gifts – a piece of cloth, a few coins, a little rice… But Saralah, absolutely oblivious to the meaning of a miracle for which he claims no authorship, tells the astonished villagers that all he has done was repeat the sacred mantra of his teacher and that it is his teacher they must thank. It so happens that Mohan’s village is very close, and a little later an astonished Mohan sees a large

crowd arriving at his door telling him one of his disciples has raised a child from death and that they are bringing their modest offerings to thank him. Mohan is stunned: not only does he know himself totally incapable of even a modest feat, but he cannot think of a single disciple of his with such a capacity. He asks the name of the disciple. When Saralah is mentioned, he is dumbfounded. ‘Tell him to come and see me’ Mohan requests. Soon after, a radiant Saralah arrives. Mohan immediately perceives his exceptional spiritual

MESSAGES OF LIFE FROM DEATH ROW Pierre Pradervand
Messages of Life from Death Row provides a living example of how we can transform even the most dire of circumstances into an opportunity for transformation and flowering of the soul. Imprisoned on death row in Texas State Penitentiary, for a crime he did not commit, Roger McGowen’s situation was seemingly hopeless. Kept in terrible conditions, Roger could so easily have given up. But he held on, no matter what, to his belief that God has a perfect plan for his life, and now has become a beacon of truth, hope and inspiration for many. Roger’s only lifeline was – and still is – with his correspondents. From 1997 onwards, they have included Pierre Pradervand, who sent Roger a copy of The Gentle Art of Blessing. After reading it, Roger started to ask for blessings for everyone around him, and gradually, a weight lifted from him. Pierre and Roger’s letters – which form the foundations of this book – reveal the blossoming of a soul, a spiritual transformation that led Roger from rage and victimhood to compassion, forgiveness, gratitude and unconditional love. As Pierre says, ‘There is a flipside to the astonishingly dehumanizing practice of capital punishment: the equally astonishing discovery that every now and then a death row inmate rises far beyond what could be expected of anyone caught in such an environment and becomes a symbol of hope for us all.’

depth and beauty. He asks him if the story is true. Saralah replies that he did nothing except repeat the mantra Mohan gave him years before. ‘But what is that mantra?’ asks Mohan. ‘Always You,’ replies Saralah. Suddenly, in a split second, Mohan relives the whole scene: he hears himself roaring out loud, then telling Saralah to leave. And he realizes that

all his spiritual knowledge is of the mind and dry, whereas Saralah has followed the path of the heart, of total devotion and constant, minute by minute gratitude for Her Omnipresence. And in a gesture of supreme humility, he falls at Saralah’s feet and implores him: ‘Master, teach me.’ A powerful antidote Deep gratitude from the heart is the most powerful antidote to negativity of any sort that exists. It is absolutely impossible to entertain the slightest negative or dark thought, feeling or emotion at the same time as authentic gratitude. Recently, I came across one of the most wonderful books I have read for a long time, Gratitude, A Way of Life [141004] by Louise Hay and friends. One of the chapters presents the concept of unconditional gratitude. Unconditional love or forgiveness is familiar to most of us – but unconditional gratitude? What’s that?! Like Saralah, it simply means seeing the divine everywhere, in every person, every event of our lives and being grateful for all these manifestations. It means that there is a meaningful cosmic plan for our lives that is unfolding moment after moment. It comes from an understanding that ‘all is infinite Mind (Love) and its infinite manifestation’, as Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Scientific statement of being of that exceptional book on spiritual healing, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures [180701] (which is also the only non dualist presentation of the Christian faith I know of). Unconditional gratitude also means… well start practising it; there is no better way to understand! With a gentle rain of blessings on you, Pierre Pradervand pierre@vivreautrement.ch

THE GENTLE ART OF BLESSING Pierre Pradervand
‘To bless,’ says Pierre, ‘means to wish, unconditionally and from the deepest chamber of your heart, unrestricted good for others and events. To bless is to acknowledge the omnipresent, universal beauty hidden from material eyes; it is to activate that law of attraction which, from the furthest reaches of the universe, will bring into your life exactly what you need to experience and enjoy.’ You will find that The Gentle Art of Blessing is the perfect way to develop an awareness constantly centred in love. This new Cygnus extended edition, with 24 pages of extra material, includes more blessings and a section where Pierre shares some of the correspondence he has received about the impact of blessing in everyday life.

IN THE PRESENT MOMENT
FIND YOUR ESSENCE CHOOSING TO BE Kat Tansey
Choosing to Be is a magical account of becoming fully present and achieving the true freedom of enjoying life just as it is. Guided by her inscrutably wise and perceptive Buddha master who just happens to be a Maine Coon cat, and inspired by his comical little brother who is the essence of pure Buddha nature, Kat overcomes seemingly impenetrable obstacles to achieve inner peace. She breaks out of the prison of her ordinary mind and arrives at a place that was there all along, the sky-like freedom of her own Buddha mind. Kat Tansey has created a story about love and compassion that teaches us answers not found in our ordinary minds. She takes the mystique out of Buddhist meditation and presents it in a way anyone can relate to, honoring her human teachers for the extraordinary contribution they make to the world. She also of course honours animals, cats in particular, for their healing presence in our lives.

CYGNUS READERS’ COMMENTS ON NAKED BEING from www.cygnus-books.co.uk/magazine
“This book is not about one teaching, but an explanation and study in what it means to be (a) universal being. Naked Being will challenge you, but then, that’s your opportunity to grow. I recommend this book for Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs and anyone interested in investigating who we really are. There will be some who cannot let go of their belief systems, and then there are the rare heretics like Harrison who openly question without prejudice or bias. More books like this and the world will be a better place!” Martin Whakeham “Being is not about thinking about the practice but LIVING the practice. Teachers like Eckhart Tolle, Barbara Marx Hubbard and Jonathan Harrison are clear that the way out of the mess this world is in, is to engage in conscious evolution. If you are open minded and ready for change, then this is for you. If not then that’s OK too. When you are ready, you will discover works of this nature which support the flowering of human consciousness and the transcendence of the old ways of thinking. Here is hope, here is love.” Harriet Messler

That is how we can gradually strive for more compassion – by cultivating both real sympathy when faced with the suffering of others and a desire to help them free themselves of it. In this way our own serenity and inner strength will increase. I love the smile, unique to humans If we are content just to think that compassion, rationality, and patience are good, that is not actually enough to develop these qualities. Difficulties provide the occasion to put them into practice. Who can make such occasions arise? Certainly not our friends, but rather our enemies, for they are the ones who pose the most problems. So that if we truly want to progress on the path, we must regard our enemies as our best teachers. For whoever holds love and compassion in high esteem, the practice of tolerance is essential, and it requires an enemy. We must be grateful to our enemies, then, because they help us best engender a serene mind! Anger and hatred are the real enemies that we must confront and defeat, not the ‘enemies’ who appear from time to time in our lives. Of course it is natural and right that we all want to have friends. I often say jokingly that a truly selfish person must be altruistic! You have to take care of others, of their well-being, by helping them and serving them, to have even more friends and make more smiles blossom. The result? When you yourself need help, you will find all you need! On the other hand, if you neglect others’ happiness, you will be the loser in the long run. Is friendship born of arguments, anger, jealousy, and unbridled competition? I don’t think so. Only affection produces authentic friends. In contemporary materialistic society, if you have money and power, you have the impression of having a lot of friends. But they aren’t your friends; they are the friends of your money and power. If you lose your wealth and influence, you will have trouble finding those people again. Unfortunately, so long as things are going well, we think we can get along all by ourselves. However, as our situation and health decline, we soon realise how wrong we were. That is when we understand who really helps us. To prepare ourselves for such a time, by making true friends who are useful when we need them most, we must cultivate altruism. As for me, I always want more friends. I love smiles, and my wish is to see more smiles, real smiles, for there are many kinds – sarcastic, artificial, or diplomatic. Some smiles don’t arouse satisfaction, and some even engender suspicion or fear. An authentic smile, though, arouses an authentic feeling of freshness, and I think the smile belongs only to human beings. If we want those smiles, we must create the reasons that make them appear. JOHN LANE
Inspiration for an Abundant (Later) Life
So long as our faculties are reasonably sound and we only suffer from the lesser infirmities of advancing age, our final decades can be joyous and fulfilling. Some people may experience bad health, unhappiness and grief, but for many these years can be amongst the happiest they have known – years that provide unequalled opportunities for creative growth enriched by mature relationships with children, grandchildren, spouse or partner and beloved friends. It is a period which can offer exceptional opportunities. Compared with the restless uncertainties (or hot-headed idealism) of adolescence, it can provide a satisfying stability. Compared, too, with the hectic business of our middle years – usually taken up with the development of family and career – the first years of retirement give us the freedom to explore those ambitions which other preoccupations denied us in the past. As well as increasing physical difficulties, advanced age can bring its own rewards. It can replace the shallowness of inexperience with a depth of understanding and complexity of being; and restless speed with the serenity of untroubled leisure. Now there is time for experiment and creativity, time for exploring our different potentials, time to live in accordance with our dreams, time to be ourselves. And as well as this freedom to find a wide range of new interests, ageing has something else to offer: the value of modesty. When the 93-year-old cellist Pablo Casals was asked why he continued to practise his instrument for three hours a day, he wrily replied: ‘I’m beginning to notice some improvement.’ Become a life-loving master To become an elder is surely (I hope) to grow in wisdom. It is to join the fellowship of those who have found a balance between energy and contemplation, adventure and reflection, enthusiasm and tranquillity. The choice is ours: to become a gloomy pessimist or a life-loving master of the art of living well. ‘I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life,’ writes Thoreau. As I grow older, thinking about death, through all my melancholy there arises a profound sense of acceptance, a recognition of the fragility and impermanence of life. And let’s face it: as Montaigne observed, death is only a few bad moments at the end of life. Meanwhile, I am relieved to discover that although some faculties are closing down (packing up is probably the better description), other things – inner things – are quietly taking their place. My relationship with the world is shifting from ‘outer’ to ‘inner’ concerns. Joy, silence, stillness and contemplation are becoming more important; making, doing and rushing around becoming much less so. As a young man I was immersed in active living – study, work, the pursuit of career and the rearing of
children. My attention now has an inward thrust. I love to read, paint, write and listen to music. I find a growing satisfaction in the observation of small things: how the wind is moving through the boughs of a tree, how the tide advances at the water’s edge; or the beauty of a scarlet sun sinking behind a bank of grey and violet-coloured cloud. These perceptions, like friendship and the discovery of new knowledge, prove to be deeply nourishing. The simple things Years ago I took delight in travelling. There was my discovery of India, from which I have yet to recover; and the old, the traditional Japan, hardly less stimulating. In different years I have travelled to Russia, Lithuania, Thailand, Morocco, Cambodia, New Zealand, Sweden,
THE ART OF AGEING John Lane
At eighty years of age, John Lane is a lover of life, still going strong, in every way he can find that suits him – and that is what he encourages in The Art of Ageing, to embrace and adapt to the ageing process and live your life to the full. He says it is the impermanence of life that renders it so precious, so we must appreciate each moment of beauty and waste no opportunity for learning and love. Be inspired: for the later years can be amongst the happiest – time for experiment and creativity, time to live in accordance with your dreams. The Art of Ageing gives advice on how to make the most of ageing, how we can celebrate its positive gifts and includes the stories of a variety of people who have enjoyed creative and productive lives well into their eighties and nineties.

Australia and the United States. I now find the contemplation of a few yards of autumnal hedgerow to be enough. Look at the colour of these silvering branches! Look at these ancient white stones and these decaying leaves! Stop to consider the flight of birds settling in the naked branches of a tree and the shining, lacquered surface of a puddle of water. This season’s oozy brown, blancmangey mud has its own magnificence. It’s December, and the cold wind on my face is a reminder that I am alive! A similar reconfiguration has occurred, I discover, with respect to my appreciation of works of art. I shall never forget the excitement with which I first heard, say, Alfred Deller’s beautiful rendering of Purcell’s Music for a While. That was wonderful enough, but I now appreciate music with a depth and breadth of knowledge of which I had no understanding at that time.
The seed of Purcell has flowered into a Paradise garden of exotic and wonderful blooms. These late years have also given me yet another freedom: the freedom to be myself, to ignore the confirmation of external approval, to reject today’s materialism, its adolescent obsession with fast and excessive living. I like to believe that I have even freed myself from the bondage of conventional behaviour. This is our life, our time, and, within the limits of our responsibilities to others and the environment, it should be enjoyed for its own sake, without constraint from the twin poisons of remorse and guilt. Life – a tremendous journey Nonetheless, getting older is no joke. Ageing takes courage and a stoicism which contrasts with the self-confident and assertive mood of one’s earlier years. Ageing is not for the fainthearted, and anyone who watches the decrepitude of advancing years with a sympathetic eye is often obliged to confess how wretched it can be. ‘To preside over the disintegration of one’s own body, looking on as sight and hearing, strength, speed and short-term memory deteriorate, calls for a heroism that is no less impressive for being quiet and patient,’ writes Mary C Morrison. Although the speed and the degree with which a body deteriorates will vary from person to person, few escape from illness altogether. Other factors can also complicate the passage of old age: the need to downsize, the continuing responsibility towards children, and, perhaps most traumatic of all, the death of close family members. Old people can face financial difficulties, bemoan the deaths of beloved friends and consider without exaggeration that the better part of our lives has already passed. Yes, it can be a time of sadness and great loss, but also a rewarding period of meaning and spirituality, one that allows each of us to die content in the knowledge that we have at least in part fulfilled the task of becoming the individual we were born to be. There is, of course, no limit to our endeavour to become that person. A full life should have granted us the opportunity to become aware of the lights and shadows, the ascents and descents, the raptures and the disappointments of that tremendous journey. Depending on who you are, and on the particular gifts with which you have been endowed, your life should have given you at least a handful of opportunities to realise yourself. That, at least, has been my own experience and that of most of my friends. Find contentment with what you have and be grateful for it. Forget the troubling but petty problems of everyday life and look around with appreciation. Reciprocate your delight by seeking opportunities to act with gratitude. Be thankful for the opportunity to be alive. From The Art of Ageing, ©2010 by John Lane, published by Green Books.

CRYSTAL HEALING Simon & Sue Lilly
Yes! It’s definitely time to make room on your shelf for another crystal book, even though it’ll rarely be left there. Just one of the many beauties of Crystal Healing is its practicality – it virtually sings ‘get on with it!’ from the pages. For me, what also sets it aside as an exciting new window into the world of crystal therapy is the wonderful array of layouts and nets – advice on which crystals to use, when, and where to place them to encourage optimum healing effects. Flick through the pages and your eyes feast upon patterns that intuitively make sense – the Earth Goddess net, for resolving insecurity, the ether net, the world tree pattern, the amethyst net, for re-integrating the fragmented self, and so many more – a delight to behold. The powerful simplicity of these techniques – which use a wide variety of stones, described in detail – is that few of the procedures involve the use of more than three different types of crystal at any time, so the effects of the crystals’ energies remain clear and concise. If you’re into crystals in any way, jump at this book immediately – you’ll love it!

In Theta Healing, Vianna Stibal describes a powerful energy-healing technique, accessed by communicating with the Creator, or the energy of All That Is. She discovered and developed Theta Healing following diagnosis of a cancer that was destroying her right femur. Her leg was instantaneously healed when she employed a simple technique that she used in her work as an intuitive reader and healer: to ‘go up above yourself’, connect to the Creator and receive instant healing – emotional or physical. Vianna describes how the technique taps into Theta brain waves – a very deep, subconscious state of relaxation, also reached in hypnosis, deep sleep or yogilevel meditation. In Theta Healing she shows you how to enter the Theta state and receive healing, how to scan yourself and others. She also explains how we are evolving, waking up dormant parts of our spiritual DNA, and shows how to activate your DNA to open your intuitive gifts.

GERALD BENEDICT
The Mayan fifth world age is drawing to a close. The sixth will begin in 2012, marking the start of a new great cycle of time and the resetting of the clock of precession. We are, thus, between ages – in a period known as the ‘apocalypse’: a time of revelation or disclosure. This prophecy combines with others that speak of the recovery of ancient wisdom, the assimilation of new truths and the opportunity that humanity will have to work out its problems responsibly by the choices it makes. This theme of the transition of our civilization into a new age is the most familiar one running through the prophecies, contradicting the sensationalist ‘end-of-the-world’ scenario. The energy of the prophecy is taken from the modern form of Mayan astrology, which describes ‘age’ transitions as stages in humanity’s development. The Mayan astrological age, determined by the precession of the equinoxes, is a cycle of approximately 26,000 years. This figure of 26,000 years (which is more precisely 25,360 solar years) is divided by the Maya into five periods called the Five Suns, each with 5,200 tun years (thirteen baktuns of about 400 tun years/394 solar years each), equivalent to 5,126 solar years. The age of Five Suns Each of these four past world ages, or creative cycles, is believed to have ended in some form of (unspecified) disaster. The dates for these four ages are as follows: First Sun: 23,618 – 18,492 BCE Second Sun: 18,492 – 13,366 BCE Third Sun: 13,366 – 8,240 BCE Fourth Sun: 8,240 – 3,114 BCE We live in the age of the Fifth Sun, which began in 3,114 BCE and will draw to a close in 2012CE. The mythology of the Maya recounted in the Popul Vuh (Book of the Community) explains how the first humans were created during the age of the First Sun. Modern geological records show that the Earth was still affected by a glacial age that endangered the lives of large mammals. There is no evidence that the period ended with a global disaster that annihilated life, but a more localized disaster would have been enough to have had an impact on the ancestors of the Maya and influenced their oral tradition. Whatever natural disasters occurred, they did not happen precisely on the end-date of each world age. Instead, there may have been an extreme process underway toward

the end of one age which overlapped with and continued into the next. The period at the close of the First Sun and the beginning of the Second Sun may have been one with extreme climate changes that led to the retreat of the ice and the need for human beings to adapt to new environments. The close of the second cycle may have seen the end of the ice age and flooding. During the third cycle humans began to settle and early forms of agriculture began to displace hunter gathering. What disasters there were, such as more flooding and volcanic activity, will have been regional rather than global. The age of the Fourth Sun may have followed a similar pattern during which

THE MAYAN PROPHECIES Gerald Benedict
For centuries, wise men of the Mayan civilisation of Central America devoted themselves to predicting the movements of celestial bodies and amassing a body of revelations about the future. At the winter solstice in 2012 their prophecies will come to fruition: this is when, according to the chilam (time-keeper priests), the current epoch of time will come to an end. One way to interpret this is in terms of looming apocalypse; but a more thoughtful way is to look at human thinking and behaviour and consider how they can be revolutionised to usher in a new and more balanced way of living. The Mayan Prophecies presents twenty-one predictions based on original Mayan texts, each fully explained and beautifully illustrated. From the prophecy of energy release at the 26,000-year galactic syncronisation climax to the possibility that humankind itself may be the living prophecy of which all the prophecies speak, the urgent message is not cataclysm but challenge. Venture right to the heart of the Mayan world-view to discover a foundationstone for a new way of thinking about our planet, our survival and our well-being.

fertile land gave way to deserts, and huge floods occurred of the kind recorded in the book of Genesis, but again these are likely to have been relatively local events. The opening of the age of the Fifth Sun marked the start date of the Long Count calendar that will end in 2012. The prophecies for the end-date clearly point to a new world age, a turning toward a Sixth Sun when we

can say, ‘A new day will dawn.’ But we also turn toward the first katun of the first sun of another cycle of five suns, and the 26,000 years of a new precessional sequence. In Mayan cosmology 21 December 2012 is the end of the Fifth Sun, which raises the question, are we to expect some form of disaster? Mythology is often the abstraction of real events, accounts of which form an oral tradition that was laid down in a period greatly distances from the culture destined to be the tradition’s custodian. Mythology is like the echo of a memory, an atavistic intuition that holds us to a continuum of meaning and helps to make mystery comprehensible. The Mayan prophecy of the current world age ending in disaster is founded on such mythologies, but we can suppose that behind them were actual events. The world will not end, but our transition to the new age may be uncomfortable. The animal zodiac The Maya have an interesting animal zodiac, but the scorpion is the only creature it has in common with the Western zodiac, though it has three in common with the Chinese system (monkey, dog and rabbit). The Mayan animals are associated with the ‘thirteen-moon natural time’ calendar, still used by Mayan communities in the Guatemalan highlands, and are as follows: bat, scorpion, deer, owl, peacock, lizard, monkey, hawk, jaguar, dog, serpent, rabbit and turtle. Each animal had an important role in Mayan mythology and certain associated characteristics. The bat represents unity and purpose; the scorpion is polarizing, stabilizing and challenging; the deer is active, bonding and offering service; the owl is analytical, influencing form and measurement; the peacock is radiance, power and leadership; the lizard is organization, balance and equality; the monkey is channelling, inspiring and harmonious; the hawk is unifying, a role-model and integrity; the jaguar is the pulse of beat of life, realization and intention; the dog is perfectionist, productive, exemplary; the serpent is terminating and liberating; the rabbit is dedication, cooperation and inspiring unity; the turtle is endurance, transcendence and presence. Our need of a closer relationship with nature is a theme that runs through the prophecies. Observing the patterns of behaviour in the natural world and absorbing them into our lives will help us to recover that longlost connection. In this way we may be better placed to make the transition into a new age. From The Mayan Prophecies: 2012, the Message and the Vision, ©2010 by Gerald Benedict, published by Watkins.

Welcome to Cranford, a town just-on-theedge-of-things in 1840s Britain. Delightfully painted with local colour, the domestic atmosphere draws you in until you know the community like your own family. The concerns of Mary Smith are those that anyone might have, such as financial worries and friendships, but through the social struggles, a deep humanity is found at the heart of the story. Just as you get to know a friend better, so do we learn to sympathise with the Cranford women, and Elizabeth Gaskell’s inclusive tone allows us to re-evaluate how we see our own society, addressing it with the new values she presents to us. Wonderfully evocative, with beautiful characterisation, wit and warmth, the Cranford experience is one which has already been discovered and cherished by many – a must-read for anyone who appreciates the simple things in life!

GRANDMA’S REMEDIES Cherry Chappell
Grandma’s Remedies gathers traditional home-made remedies, handed down through the generations. It presents an A-Z list, by ailment, of remedies and advice gathered from all over the world. For example, did you know that chewing toasted fennel seeds will help combat indigestion? Grandma’s Remedies is more than a guide to traditional treatments; it also paints a vivid portrait of the world of our grandparents and greatgrandparents. It shows how inventive and resourceful they were with the materials near to hand, and how it was the women of the household who, despite being barred from the medical profession, were relied on to safeguard family health. Follow in their footsteps, build your own home pharmacy and make the most of nature’s healing properties.

“If you enjoyed Dan Brown’s books, I thoroughly recommend Kathleen McGowan. If you thought Dan Brown was disappointing in any way, read these and be consoled – they are better in almost every way. Of course, having a female main character is almost bound to appeal more to a female reader, but I found Maureen much easier to get alongside than Robert Langdon. Somehow, she seems rather more human as she is going through her incredible adventures. For anyone who has ever wondered how the belief in the marriage of Christ and Mary Magdalene has played out down the centuries, this series is definitely for you!” Karen Tucker, Cygnus Reader

MADDY HARLAND
A dear friend of mine who spent much time in the beautiful Western Isles of Scotland once told me a story about the Queen. HMS Britannia was on its annual summer voyage with its royal passengers and stopped at a small bay one quiet afternoon. The Queen disembarked and waved away her bodyguards and other familiars and set off for a rare walk on her own. Her path took her to a small cottage where she saw its owner gardening. The Queen greeted the Half woman and they stopped to chat over price! the garden fence. Then she asked if she could come in and have a cup of tea. The two women went inside, brewed tea and sat down in simple surroundings by a small fire, drinking tea. They passed the time of day and then eventually the Queen asked her host what she did and how long she had lived on the island. The woman was a writer and she told the Queen that she visited the island in the summer months in search of seclusion, to appreciate the nature there and for literary inspiration. The Queen’s response was one of wistful understanding and the writer became acutely aware that her celebrated guest was rarely able to be truly alone and meet strangers informally over a simple cup of tea. I found this story a deeply poignant insight into our Royal Family. I believe that despite the glamour of vast wealth and global fame, the Queen’s role as sovereign is in part a sacrifice. It is obvious that she has a deep connection with the natural world. Prince Phillip was an early experimenter with solar water technology at Windsor and enjoys farming – he even has an experimental orchard of truffle inoculated oaks. The Princess Royal speaks with intelligence and obvious knowledge of biomass, coppicing and peak oil. They have all championed homoeopathy. I met them briefly a couple of years ago. It was obvious that they were not two-dimensional people. Prince Charles has come in for a lot of stick for talking to plants, being ‘mystical’, and interfering with architecture, imposing a pseudo neo-Georgian pastiche, only viable in affluent places like Dorset. Yet his passion for preserving heritage, his work with young people and his championing of organics and habitat conservation over decades have hit the mark. He has proved that he is well ahead of most of the rest of society. Far from being an heir in waiting, he is consolidating a powerful role as a social and environmental commentator.
Harmonising with Nature
The holistic view So it is with interest that I read the introduction to Prince Charles’ book, Harmony. In it he openly admits that he has been challenging the accepted wisdom, the current orthodoxy and conventional way of thinking that has its origins in the 19th Century when industrialisation took full sway and the Newtonian worldview began to fragment our vision. He has been accused of dilettantism – of leaping from one subject to another – from architecture to agriculture ‘as if I spent a morning saving the rainforests, then in the afternoon jumping to help young people start new businesses.’ HARMONY: A VISION FOR OUR FUTURE HRH the Prince of Wales, Tony Juniper & Ian Skelly
Harmony is practical guide to what we have lost in the modern world, why we have lost it and how easily it is to rediscover. It is a blueprint for a more balanced, sustainable world. For more than thirty years HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales has been at the forefront of a growing ecological movement. His work has sought to meet a huge range of modern challenges, from urbanisation to deforestation. For the first time, Prince Charles, with the help of his two leading advisors, has brought together his vast knowledge and experience to set out this robust and practical philosophy. In Harmony, he demonstrate how many modern challenges, seen in areas as diverse as architecture, farming and medicine can be traced to how we have abandoned a classical sense of balance and proportion. From the rice farms of India to America’s corn belt, Harmony spans the globe, finding what has put us at odds with the world and showing how this imbalance manifests itself throughout our lives. Harmony shows how reconnecting with Nature, seeking balance in our actions will return us to a more considered, secure, comfortable and cleaner world.
336pp, 189mm x 246mm, hardback, 2010, RRP £25.00

But the subtext to his interests and work has been an appreciation of holism, of inter-relationship. Organic agriculture, natural medicine, conservation, gainful fulfilling employment, especially for the young, human-scale design and architecture are inter-related. They are threads in the woven tapestry of a creative and more sustainable world. Harmony examines our global crisis born from the relentless pursuit of economic
growth and technological progress. It travels back in time to explore how the ancients saw the world as a whole and in necessary balanced with Nature. It looks at how sustainability springs from seeing the world as an interconnected whole and speaks of ‘this timeless view… rooted in the human condition and in human experience’ and suggests how we might do this. The sticky question of land The Prince of Wales no doubt puts his cards on the table with this book. He will be vilified and celebrated all at the same time. Carbon counters will inevitably scorn his private jets and billionaire lifestyle, asking him to walk his talk; republicans will call for democratic reform; and I might point out that the root of our economic problem lies with land ownership. It was when we enclosed the commons and cleared the Highlands that we forced people out of relative self-sufficiency into paying rents and the subsequent necessity of earning a wage. This was the turning point. Now 90% of us live on less than 10% of the land and even the plots we inhabit are shrinking. Just under one-third of Britain’s land is still owned by aristocrats and traditional landed gentry. If we are to harmonize our lives in accord with Nature, we will have to revisit this thorny question and create a more sustainable land-based life for all sectors of society. Inevitably, that necessitates deep social change. As we steer away from being ‘Masters of Nature’ to the ‘sacred duty of stewardship’ it is inescapable that we will have to share natural resources more equitably. How we do this will require a clear vision of what an ecologically based society actually is. We cannot see-saw between political ideologies – this is not about communism, socialism or capitalism – but about how we are to create a society based on holistic, earth-based values and ethics. Prince Charles, a complex cocktail of spiritual intent and material privilege, brings this debate even more firmly into the public arena. It will be fascinating to see how it plays out. Letters and poems from Cygnus members
Once upon a time, living in mile upon mile of city, the grey concrete and tarmac, the drone of city traffic and people passing each other like strangers, was getting me down. My head and my whole posture hanging low, I caught sight of a little bit of moss growing in the pavement. This transported me back to my childhood, when I could imagine being so small that I walked though the moss as if it were a miniature forest. Since I had now put my mind to looking for ‘forests’, I then began to notice moss or small plants growing in cracks all over the place. All of a sudden, I heard the birds too, and realised that this is a matter of selective listening and selective seeing, something that is possible everywhere! I am no longer living in the city. I had to learn how to love it before I could leave it, and to hold my head high. I later found a line from the Dhammapada that sustains me: Life is the creation of your mind. Love, Marianne May
Creation’s Dance Life is a beautiful, rhythmic dance. When we are happy we dance with delight. Sadness stops us in mid-flight, and movement becomes despairing, like we’re wearing leaden shoes. But we dance on, to the rhythm of life, and every creature, every tree, every star and every bee moves to creation’s beating heart. When we lose our way, is it because we’ve forgotten the tune we were meant to play? Our hearts beat in time with nature’s clock. When they stop, we find the key to unblock the door to a rhythm yet unknown. But, as here before, music will be there, I’m sure. The planets will still waltz around the sun, until creation’s dance is done. Only perfect rhythm sees them on their way, measuring every hour, of every day; moving in unison with every part, never missing the beat of creation’s heart. Marie Parsons A walking mantra Dear Friends I was inspired by Madeline Elliot’s ‘A Daily Prayer of Thanks’ (Issue 10), and I’d like to share my walking mantra, which I repeat while walking my dog. Mother Earth, Mother Earth, Mother Earth, I revere you. I honour the Earth down to its core, I honour the grass, the trees, the plants, and the flowers that grow on the Earth. I honour the rivers, the oceans, the seas,

Giving Thanks I am grateful for each day’s package of unopened time: minutes, seconds, hours, gift-wrapped in hopes and possibilities. For the soft footfalls of evening, ushering in dark, star-crowned night, bearing restoration and repose. For the seasons of the year, riding their rainbow carousel, springtime and harvest, silver and gold. For the lessons of today, and the hopes of tomorrow. For the strength of friendship, the consolation of solitude, love, in all its colours, shapes and sizes. For sustenance for bodies and manna for souls. For the light of understanding and the comfort of compassion. And for the existence of Angels. Tricia Sturgeon
