ACTIVITIES
Our Coen site operates men’s and women’s activities to address barriers to employment and provide opportunities to develop skills and engage in community projects. Some projects have included the maintenance of the cemetery, health and wellbeing workshops and a book club. A number of local organisations and employers are also hosting individuals who gain real life work experience while supporting these organisations. These organisations include the School, Wunthulpu Aboriginal Corporation and Kalan Aboriginal Corporation.
JOBS
CYE are tracking 20 jobseekers placed in employment. Some of the employers include: Lama Lama, CYAAA, Kalan Enterprises, O-Hub, Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing, St Johns Community Care.
TRAINING
Envizion training was held in Coen and all of our jobseekers enjoyed experiencing the Virtual Reality program and the MyPotentia assessment. We have had had seven participants successfully complete White Card training. Coen participants are also gaining their drivers’ licenses with our support.
Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival preparations For more than 20 years, and with huge community support, Coen has taken part in the biennial Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival. In preparation for the festival in June, some of our participants have been busy making spears and shields, drilling seeds for necklaces and washing grass skirts.
Cemetery clean up Our Better Gardens Team in Coen were busy last week improving the grounds around the local cemetery. They did a great job tackling grass—thanks to all the rain we’ve had lately. Our CYE team are also working to restore some of the crosses.
Envizion “Thanks to Cape York Employment for the opportunity to engage with Coen clients. And thanks for being so well organised and making us welcome.”

CAPE YORK
Support our Community Coen ladies have been busy learning new skills and enjoying their time sewing little dresses from pillowcases. Carol Fyfe from Cape York Partnership led the activity. Donna Creek was a great help showing her skills and assisting the participants.
Kalan Enterprises Aboriginal Corporation employment Keep up the great work Dylan Creek and Kirk Rose-Gregory. We took a quick visit to Kalan Enterprises Aboriginal Corporation to see these two welding pig traps as part of the feral eradication on country project.
Candle Making Project
Learning new skills to share
The participants used different techniques to give their candles different textures, colours and level of fragrances from mild to strong.
It was great to see mainstream and remote WFD working together.
Overall everyone was happy with their results. They excitedly spoke about where the scented candles would be proudly placed in their homes or how they would be used as gifts for family and friends. Visitors to our CYE office were also very impressed with the finished products.
The Coen team, led by Supervisor Amos Hobson, participated in activities with Solwata Club in Cairns. They learned new skills in fibreglassing and visited a hydroponics set up to take skills back to Coen.
Book Club Our CYE Book Club began with great enthusiasm and participation. Our job seekers and Participation Supervisors Amos and Rose sat around a table and each read a page from the booklet. After reading each page, our Participation Supervisors asked whether there were words the job seeker did not understand. One job seeker asked, “what does initiative mean?” – Amos and Rose went on to explain the meaning and give an example of it in a sentence. Afterwards, Amos wrote words on the whiteboard to help our job seekers spell and sound words out properly. It was a great activity and we look forward to purchasing new books for our Book Club.
