design statement In Malaysia, youths are people aged between 15-24 are often associated with the terms “energetic” and “vibrant”. However, youths happen to be at an age where they are faced with the most challenges, mentally and physically, that if left unattended could cause negative impacts in the future. As a solution, the Fitokio office will provide health checks, activities, and consultations. It will serve as a common ground for youths to cultivate a heathier lifestyle, while learning more about themselves. During the pandemic, most youths found themselves in front of the screen and cooped up indoors over long periods. Therefore, the Fitokio office aims to re-introduce the connection with nature elements, break do wn confining walls with an open plan, and create interactive experiences to encourage movement and mingling among patrons and staff.
The design takes on a casual and comfortable approach, creating work spaces that break free from the typical office feel. The various typologies introduced aims to cater to the many needs of modern working life, be it at a desk, on the ground, or even outdoors. The integration of workspaces, event spaces and the outdoor terrace allows for flexibility for different occasions. It also brings in nature elements which serve as a constant reminder of work-life balance. All in all, the Fitokio office is designed with the users’ mental and physical comfort in mind, where ample space is provided for team work and individual focus.

reflection
I would describe the MLE experience as a whole process. Although my course and future profession is to be a designer focusing on interior spaces, the MLE part of the assignment has introduced the actual process of bringing a building to life which involves many different parties. One of the challenges i encountered in this experience would be my lack of knowledge in their fields. When doing each of our tasks, we sometimes forget to consider the requirements and limitations of the other party. This causes a few hiccups along the way but fortunately, everything was able to be solved. The concept of collaboration across schools for a project is a good idea but I believe the experience can be further enhanced with a smaller group size. That way, the whole team can have the opportunity to actively participate without the fear of being nervous, or creating too much noise. It would also be interesting to have more back-and-forth interactions when changes are progressively made as it is more realistic, however it is quite challenging to implement due to time constraints. Overall, I’m satisfied with the collaboration with the architecture and quantity surveying groups. It is a good introduction into their line of work and involvement in projects. This is the first time I got the chance to see the role and importance of quantity surveyors, as I previously thought that costing is a shared responsibility of architects and interior designers. I would definitely recommend this collaboration experience with other students as a pre-internship experience, so that at least we have slightly more knowledge about the industry before we step into it.
