Minimal Letterforms Close examination of the form and function of letterforms. Investigate the unique visual characteristics of a specific

typeface and the aspects of composition-including juxtaposition, contrast, form/counterform, symmetry, and balace.

In this process, I studied the character of the positive and

nagative forms with each letter. With the perscribed grid, it exploit the interrelationship of the parts to form a unified compositional whole.

1

Step 1 : Trace and the study of letterforms

The typefaces: Centaur, Garamond, Bodoni, Memphis, Helvetica, and Friz Quadrata. 2

Step 2 : Enlarge and refine of letterforms.

The final typeface that I chose to study:

Garamond 3

Magnift, and crop the letterforms to to a fraction of their original form.

4

I gathered the cuves and lines as a combination to create an abstract image.

Step 3 : Digitalize my final design. Letterforms: Q, B, G, S Characteristics: Multiple curves Round shapes Connected Abstract

5

2

Type Hierarchy Studies Used a provided set of information to explore compositional alternatives.

Process for each sets: Sizes: 10x 10

Step 1 : Cut and paste the information on tracing paper for inspiration. Step 2 : Refined and digitalized the final design in Adobe InDesign. 7

Through the book design, I learnt more deep about the features of typography, and apply them into my book design, such as justification, alignment, line spacing, etc.

14

I Organized the book in minimal style and consistent color.

Create a grid structure help organize and balance the text and visual. It is a grid for measuring margins, columns, and gutter widths. Besides, enlarging the images can fully utilized the page and make the entire view more interesting. After finished the book design, I blinded the book.
