CULTURE HOUSE OSTERBRO POST, COPENHAGEN DENMARK
OSTERBRO POST WAS KNOWN AS ONE OF THE OLDEST POST OFFICE IN COPENHAGEN. CURRENTLY IT IS OPPERATING AS A CULTURAL MUSEUM AS WELL AS A EDUCATIONAL SPACE. CULTURE HOUSE CONCEPT IS DEEPLY ROOTED IN DANISH COMMUNITY AND CAN BE DESCRIBED AS A “CITIZENS’ HOUSE” WHICH IS A TERM FOR A CULTURAL INSTITUTION THAT IS AVALIABLE TO A CITY OR A LOCAL POPULATION THAT OFFERS CULTURAL, ASSICIATION AND LEISURE FACILITIES THE PROPOSED CULTURE HOUSE ACCOMODATES OFFICE SPACES, A COMMON DLEXIBLE EVENT AREA, STUDY SPACE, AND A KITCHEN USED FOR CLASSES FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS PROVIDING A SETTING IN WHICH THEY CAN GAIN PRATICAL INSIGHT INTO A HEALTHY AND CREATIVE FOOD CULTURE.

UNSPOKEN BOUNDARIES
20 UNION SQUARE WEST, MANHATTAN, NEW YORK AN INITIAL UNSPOKEN DISCONNECTION OCCURS IN SOCIETY AS A RESULT OF SOCIAL BOUNDARIES THAT PEOPLE SET FOR THEMSELVES AS A DEFENSE MECHANISM AGAINST UNCOMFORTABLE OR NEW EVENTS AND STRANGERS. BUT PEOPLE ARE CREATURES OF CONNECTION. SPACES ARE DESIGNED FOR BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE AND TO BE EXPERIENCE TOGETHER. THE SIMPLE ACT OF COOKING AND DINING PERFORMED EVERY DAY MAY BE A WAY TO BRING ALL CULTURES TOGETHER WITHOUT HESITATION. THIS THESIS INVESTIGATES THE IDEA OF LINKING PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROGRAMMATIC OVERLAP WITHIN THE INTERIOR TO BREAK THROUGH “SOCIAL BOUNDARIES” THAT EXIST IN SPACE PSYCHOLOGICALLY AND VISUALLY.
THE PROPOSED LOCATION IS THE CENTER OF UNION SQUARE PARK, WHERE PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS GATHER TOGETHER SPEND TIME AT THE PARK, THE PLAYGROUND, OR THE GREEN MARKET AND USING THE 14TH STREET/UNION SQUARE STATION FOR TRANSPORTATION. SOCIAL DISCONNECTION AND THE RISE IN FOOD INSECURITY IN NEW YORK IS ADDRESSED THROUGH A PROGRAM OF COMBINING A COOKING CLASS AS WELL AS A RESTAURANT THAT ALSO FUNCTIONS AS A SOUP KITCHEN IN THE MORNING AND EDUCATIONAL CLASSES IN COOKING TO SERVE THE FOOD DEPRIVED. THE PROGRAMS ARE CONNECTED AS A WAY TO DISSOLVE THE SOLID SOCIAL WALLS BY CREATING A SENSE OF “ BEING IN TOUCH” VISUALLY AND PHYSICALLY THROUGH CONNECTING PEOPLE’S MINDS, INTERESTS TO COME TOGETHER THROUGH INTERIOR DESIGN.

INTERNATIONAL CENTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY MOVED TO THE ESSEX STREET LOCATION LATE 2019 WHERE THE NEW BUILDING ALLOWS MORE SPACE FOR THE TWO MAIN PROGRAMS THAT THE ICP FOCUSES ON WHICH IS THE SCHOOL OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND A PUBLIC GALLERY SPACE.
VOLUME
HOWEVER A PROBLEM OCCURING IN COMBINING THE TWO BUILDINGS TO HAVE A MORE COOPERATIVE FUNCTIONING PROGRAM WAS REQUIRED TO DESIGN THE PUSH BEYONF THE BOUNDARIES OF EXISITING BUILDING AND FIND A NEW THRESHOLD TO COMBINE THE TWO SPACES.
PHYSICAL SPACE
TO CREATE A REFORMED PERPSECTIVE COMES WITH THE GOAL OF CREATING A DREAM LIKE SENSATION OF DISTORTING A PERON’S VISUAL AND PHYSICAL EXPECTATION OF THEIR SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT BY TILTING SOME SIDES OF THE WALLS TO A FEW DEGREES TO CREATING ACCESIBLE RAMPS THROUGHOUT THE SPACE. THE VISUAL EDGE STARTS TO BLUR AS PROGRAMMATIC BOUNDARIES ALSO BLEND WITH ONE ANOTHER. ALSO BY CREATING THIS ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE FUNNEL LIKE STRUCTURE FRAMES EACH AREAS OF INTEREST IN MAKING OBJECTS/ SUBJECTS SEEM BIGGER AND SMALLER THAN IT ACTUALLY IS IN REAL LIFE.

DESIGNING A CONTEMPORARY URBAN RESIDENCE TO EXPLORE AND REDEFINE ADAPATIVE LIVING BETWEEN PEOPLE AND THEIR DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT SHAPED BY PERSONAL BEHAVIOR AND HABITS, NEED FOR PRIVACY, CULTURAL NORMS, AND PHYSICAL CONSTRINTS. THE DESIGN INTEGRATES THE IDEA OF ADAPATING AND CONSIDERING THE FAMILY’S EVLOVING NEEDS AND CHANGES TO DIFFERENT PATTERNS OF LIFESTYLE. THE RESIDENCE DESIGNED FOR A COUPLE WITH ONE CHILD THE AGE OF 5 AND A GRANDPARENT. THE FAMILY OF FOUR REQUESTED TO HAVE AN AREA FOR MORE COMMON INTERACTION AS WELL AS BEING ABLE TO HAVE VISUAL ACCESS TO OTHER PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE CHILD, MOTHER, FATHER, AND THE GRANDMOTHER. THE APPROACH WAS TAKEN BY CREATING MUTPLE DOUBLE HEAD HEIGHT SPACES WHERE LIVING ROOM CONNECTS TO THE UPPER FLOORS AS WELL AS THE LOW BASEMENT AREA HAVING MORE REVEAL TO THE UPPER PROGRAMS WITH AN OPEN CEILING NEAR THE COMMON SPACE. 4

STATENS MUSEUM FOR KUNST IN COPENHAGEN IS THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF DENMARK. FOR A TEMPORARY INSTALLATION THE THE MUSEUM REQUESTED RISING INTERIOR DESIGNERS TO DESIGN A CAPTIVATING EXHIBITION TO CELEBRATE THE FAMOUS DANISH CHAIR DESIGNERS THROUGHT HISTORY. THE LOCATION OF THE MUSEUM WAS THE LONG NARROW HALLWAY THAT CONNECTS THE OLD BUILDING TO THE NEW EXTENDED BUILDING OF THE MUSEUM WHERE THE HALLWAY FACES TWO DIFFERENT BRICK AND GYPSUM FACADES . IN THE SAME LANGAUGE OF THE NARROW HALLWAY, SMALL PODS OF PYRAMID CUT SHAPES BECAME AN INPIRATION TO BRING IN A SENSE OF DUAL VISION OF PEOPLE ENTERING INTO THE SMALL PODS TO SEE THE CHAIR AND INFORMATION AS WELL AS PEOPLE ON THE OTHER SIDE CAN HAVE A PEAK THROUGH INTO WHAT TYPE OF CHAIR WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE POD TO EVOKE CURIOSITY.
