2009-10 SEASON PREVIEW “Our success will be built upon –

‘Attention to Detail’ in all of the things that we do and our team chemistry which should continue to grow.”

bring Cypress to the next level.

Head Coach Paul Bottiaux returns for his sixteenth season this year. Bottiaux and the Chargers are coming off of a 14-18 season where the freshman class showed talent and promise and return this season to

Cypress hopes to improve on their 4-8 conference record from last season and hope to propel themselves to the playoffs for the first time since 2001. Head Coach Paul Bottiaux has big hopes for this year’s squad:

W

e are in a rebuilding process with only three returning players in our program from last season. However, there is plenty of room for optimism as we move forward with this year’s team. The style of our play should be more up-tempo than in previous years. We have the capacity to get more open looks with full court offense as opposed to getting into half court sets. The team continues to adapt to this style and become more proficient. It will be a work in progress during the pre-season to hopefully prepare us as we move forward into conference play. With so many new players we are getting to know each other better all the time. Our success will be built upon – “Attention to Detail” in all of the things that we do and our team chemistry which should continue to grow. Again our schedule provides us the opportunity to pursue our best in playing an extremely tough pre-season schedule to help prepare us for the always tough and quite arguably the best conference in the state – the Orange Empire Conference. We play in five preseason tournaments with many of this year’s better teams in the state as participants. With non-conference foes such as Pasadena and El Camino our team should be battle tested as we begin conference play. It goes without saying you have to “bring it” each and every night in this conference. This certainly helps our players as they make the transition to the four year level. When they leave Cypress they truly are prepared for their next experience. Coaching Staff:

We have a great group of coaches that help our athletes as they

progress through their experience at Cypress. They are knowledgeable and proficient in their expertise about the game. The work extremely hard without much retribution, but do so for the love of the game and their concern with our student-athletes. Coaches Joseph Webber, Brian Brennan, and Chris St. Clair are teachers of the game on the daily practice floor. They each provide their own level of experience and contribute to the direction of this program. Greg Brand who has been on this staff the longest, and Henry Tran continue to help support this program in a variety of ways ranging all the way from scouting to fundraising. Sophomores: There is no doubt that your team’s success can be traced to the leadership and experience that are provided by your sophomores. Co-Captains Tim Austin and Troy Baugh return with plenty of proven experience and we will rely on them to help in the maturation of our younger players. They have been through the battles and will need to help our freshmen through the early season, non-conference play. Brad Johnson, also returns, but his role has changed a great deal. He needs to provide consistency with his overall play and be the versatile player that can handle difficult situations. Our last sophomore, Brett Spencer, transferred from Sonoma State University and his impact should be seen right away. He can flat out shoot the ball from distance, and he truly loves to compete. Freshmen: This young group of players will truly make an impact on our team this season. They are talented, eager to learn, and enthusiastic in their approach. Devin Golston, who played at Gahr HS, should have an extremely productive career at Cypress. He can score in so many different ways inside and outside. We like what he brings on game nights, and if he can continue to be consistent with his efforts there will be no stopping his growth within our program. Reggie Abrams, who played at Paramount HS, will lead this team from the point guard position. He can have an impact on our ability to push the ball in the open court, plus he can score as well. He will continue to improve this year and should have a great career for the Chargers. EJ Singleton, Allan Banker, and Nick DeMusis will also see significant action this year and most definitely will make their presence felt. EJ and Allan will back-up our perimeter players and Nick will add more stability to the front line. Ashton Wilson and Randall Laing bring a wealth of maturity to the team and could really develop their games and be counted on as we get closer to conference play. Athletically they can both compete and as they learn our system their on-court time should improve. 2009-10 MEN’S BASKETBALL

#52 ASHTON WILSON 6’8” 310 lb. Freshman Center Hometown: Houston, TX Gulfshore Academy

High School Highlights: A four-year letter winner… finished his senior season with nine points per game… scored a career high 42 points as a junior at Heritage Christian… was named the Most Improved Player in Houston as a sophomore. Personal: Born on January 17th, 1987… mother is Felisa Jackson… major is undecided… came to Cypress, “to better myself.” According to Coach Bottiaux... he is the big guy in the middle, conditioning has limited his role on our team, but once he can get through that he could make an impact this year, we hope he turns the corner because we like his on court communications and his size presence.

RS TRISTAN HENDERSON 6’4” 240 lb. Redshirt Center Hometown: Concord, NC Los Alamitos High School

High School Highlights: A three year letterwinner with the Griffins... led the team to two CIF championships. Personal: Born on December 17th, 1987… parents are Merthlyn Bergan and Stanley Henderson… majoring in sociology… joined the Army in 2008.

C

ypress matched their win total from the 200708 season in 2008-09. The season was marked with runs of highs and lows and some very competitive matchups. Cypress started the season with a tournamentheavy pre-conference schedule. Cypress started with a split in a mini-tournament at Cuyamaca. The squad then went 2-3 against five non-conference foes before heading to Grossmont for a full tournament. Cypress won the first two and fell in the Championship game for a second place finish. They headed directly to Santa Barbara losing two and winning one. After another non-conference win, the grueling schedule continued with two straight tournaments including a second place finish at San Diego Mesa. Orange Empire action proved to be tough again. After a tough loss to eventual state champs Riverside, Cypress won two straight breaking 100 making a statement in both victories. Cypress finished the first half of conference 3-3 in fourth place behind a competitive three-way tie for first place. Cypress could not keep the momentum going in the second half of conference only able to win one more game on the way to a 4-8 conference finish matching their fourth place finish from the season before. The Chargers were anchored by newcomer Tim Austin and sophomore transfer John Staats. Austin was later named to the All-Conference Team and Staats was named to the second team.

CYPRESS CHARGERS

To a Cypress College Student: One of life’s most erroneous phrases is, “Getting an Education.” When I was a Cypress student, I didn’t get “diddlysquat.” I had to earn everything I acquired. Earning an education is hard work and many wither by the wayside for that reason. If you don’t have one already, you’ve got to find a great reason to keep going, especially when things get really tough. When you hit that wall and consider whether it’s “worth it,” you’ve got to dig way down into your soul and find something that will give you just enough to get you to the next day. Take it from one who had to do just that. Cut from tryouts in high school, when entering Cypress College, I though I’d try basketball one more time. About half way through the first day of practice I just wanted to throw my sneakers at the coach and say, “This is stupid! No one should have to go through this much pain for a stupid game!” But, you see, I had never quit anything in my life and I found enough guts to make it for the next hour. I came back the next day and it was even harder. In time, I conditioned myself so that I never fatigued; I didn’t want to go through that again. The result? I became a Community College All-American, two-time NCAA champion, ABA Rookie of the Year and two-time ABA All-Star, leading rebounder of the ABA and NBA, and hold an all-time rebound record. So, you’re not “getting an education.” Of course you know that. You know it’s tough, especially when you’re shooting for the A. There’s pain ahead for you, as there was for me. But it’s worth it. The way I look at it, “If it doesn’t kill me, it’s probably going to make me better.” Along those same lines, when at the threshold of retreat, I coached myself by saying, “What’s a little pain? You’ve been there before and pushed through it. What’s a little pain, anyway?” Swen Nater
