2010 SEASON PREVIEW

C

ypress had a historic year in 2009 with the program’s first ever playoff appearance and the most wins since 2006. First year coach Ed Kephart keyed the program’s turnaround and aims to continue the building in his second season as a Charger. Kephart has high hopes for this year’s squad and is aiming to improve on the success from last season: The 2010 men’s soccer team is looking to build on its accomplishments from last season. After making history by getting to the playoffs for the first time in the history of the program, the 2010 team is hungry to not only make the playoffs again but to be more successful in conference. This year’s team will bring something that last year’s team couldn’t, sophomore leadership. With eleven players returning, the team will have the experience and leadership that it lacked during the 2009 season. Of those returning players are the 2009 team MVP Carlos Quiñones and second leading scorer Manuel Espinoza. Other key returners are Cesar Ramirez, Nelson Preciado, Bryan Arguello and Ernie Escobedo. Adding to the experience of the returning players is a group of talented freshman including defenders

2

Chidi Ewenike (Brea High School), Omar Hernandez (Santiago GG HS) and goalkeeper Jarrod Rice (Cypress HS) that aim to improve on the 41 goals allowed last season. The coaching staff will have a new face as well. Keishawn Cordier made the move to Division I and the UC Riverside women’s soccer staff. Replacing Keishawn will be Martin Carrington who brings with him not only professional playing experience from Preston North End in England but also two community college championships while playing at Santa Ana College (1998) and Irvine Valley College (1999). With experience and new faces, this year’s team is looking to succeed on a level that no other team has in the history of Cypress College Men’s soccer. Thank you to all of you who support the program and we look forward to seeing you on the field. Cypress will play six pre-conference games with four at home. The Chargers will then turn to competetive conference play where they will aim to improve on their seventh place finish from 2009. The Chargers finished the first half of conference last season tied for first but suffered a drop off in the second half. The much improved 2010 Charger team will look to set a new bar for the Charger Men’s Soccer program.
