Social Science Bryan Seiling’s journey to tenure is “the product of a quite wonderful and rewarding journey stretching back nearly two decades.” He was first hired at Cypress in August 1994, one week before the start of the fall semester as an emergency replacement. Over the next 13 years as an adjunct instructor his roots here grew deep. “While I continued to teach at other schools and work in jobs outside of education to make ends meet, Cypress was always a special place. It afforded me not only opportunities to teach and better myself as an educator, but also to participate in the larger campus life as well.” He attended division meetings, was active with the Teacher Preparation Program, became the Faculty Advisor for the Future Educators Club, and was an original member of the Charles Pound Memorial Scholarship Committee. In 2007, Seiling was named Adjunct Instructor of the Year by the Faculty Senate as recognition of this work. “It was a proud moment, only to be topped three days later when I was hired as a full-time instructor here at the college. I must admit, that was a pretty great week! “ Since becoming a full-time instructor, his participation has broadened as an active member of various faculty committees such as Program Review, Direction One, SLO GE Program Committee, Social Science Division Technology Committee, and the Charles Pound Memorial Scholarship Committee. He is also the faculty advisor for the Educational Ambassadors. Seiling earned his Master’s degree in History from the University of Southern California, where he also earned his Bachelor’s degree with a triple-major in History, Political Science, and Gender Studies. He has also worked in theater production with the Center Theatre Group and the Hollywood Bowl for over a decade.

Gloria Badal Social Science Division Goloria Badal has taught in community colleges since 2002 as an adjunct faculty member at Riverside Community College, Golden West College, Santiago Canyon College, Saddleback College, and Irvine Valley College, as well as at California State University, Fullerton. She was awarded Adjunct Teacher of the Year at Riverside Community College in 2005 and was nominated for Outstanding Faculty of the Year at Cypress College in 2007. As the Department Coordinator for Political Science at Cypress College, she has taught courses in Middle East Politics, Comparative Politics, Political Theory and American Government. Badal also was the Advisor of the Muslim Student Association at Cypress College for two years. A Cypress College alumna, she earned bachelor’s degree at California State University, Fullerton. She also completed an M.A. in Political Science at CSUF and has begun work on a Ph.D. in Political Science at University of California, Santa Barbara. Her major fields were American Politics and International Relations with a minor in Comparative Politics and Political Theory.

Michael Klyde’s career spans 30 years of automotive and education experience. His automotive experience began at DeLorean Motor Company in 1981, while his connection to community college began the following year when he enrolled in automotive technology courses at Golden West College. He started at Cypress College in 1995, teaching advanced tune up and electrical courses through spring 2007, when he was hired as a full time tenure track instructor. His courses include the engine performance and electrical subject areas. Klyde has been an ASE certified Master Technician for over 20 years and the training development courses he developed for the auto companies — such as Nissan, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia and Suzuki — he has worked for have garnered several awards. He has also assisted in grant development and grant work for the Cypress College Automotive Department. Klyde earned his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Teacher Education and a Master’s degree in Occupational Studies, both at California State University, Long Beach.

Jeremy Peters Career Technical Education Jeremy Peters began instructing in Cypress College’s Culinary Arts Program in fall of 2007 following a professional culinary career that began with Hyatt Hotels in 1996. He was recruited in 2000 as part of the opening culinary team for Disney’s Grand California Hotel.

Soon after, Peters was promoted to the position of Executive Chef of Catering and Special Events at Disney’s Grand California Hotel.

During that time, he taught at Orange Coast College as a culinary arts adjunct faculty member. While at Orange Coast College, Jeremy coached the culinary arts competition team to five state titles, two regional titles and one national title. As part of the Cypress College Hotel, Restaurant, Culinary Arts Program, Peters oversees the Culinary Arts program and currently instructs Culinary Fundamentals and American Regional Cuisine courses. He has created a new Baking and Pastry Arts certificate and degree, and revised the culinary arts curriculum to reflect current market trends. He is actively involved with high school and ROP outreach and local culinary competitions. He serves as faculty advisor for the Culinary and Hospitality Club as well as Perkins program manager.

Science, Engineering and Mathematics (Cont’d) Jose Sanchez-Duran has been at Cypress College for 5 years, teaching a variety of courses such as Human Anatomy, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Integrated Medical Science, and Human Physiology.

He is currently the co-coordinator of the Human Anatomy and the Human Physiology programs in the Biology Department, cofounded the Human Anatomy & Physiology study room, and has co-written a new customized human anatomy laboratory manual.

Dr. Sanchez-Duran has been involved in the STEM grant and has participated in numerous high school outreach events that aim at bridging the gap between high school and college. He has served on hiring committees, has been a new faculty mentor, and is currently the SLO representative for the SEM division. He is a firm believer that an instructor is both an educator and a facilitator. As an educator, the instructor provides the students with essential information that they need to know about the subject matter. As a facilitator, the instructor guides the students in the direction they should go to find answers and to solve problems. Sanchez-Duran obtained his Ph.D. in May 2001 at the University of Missouri-Columbia in Biological Sciences (with an emphasis in Neurophysiology).

His thesis work on neural plasticity of the central nerve pathways that regulate feeding behavior in Aplysia californica produced one co-author publication and four first author publications. These studies involved examining functional neural regeneration of central nerve pathways that elicit fictive feeding by using single cell electrophysiology. He completed his post-doctoral research at the University of California, Irvine.

Robin De Roo Science, Engineering and Mathematics Robin De Roo began working at Cypress College as an adjunct faculty member in fall 2003 and was hired into a tenure-track position in fall 2007. She has also taught at California State University Long Beach and Fullerton, Glendale Community College, Whittier College, Fullerton College, Mount San Antonio College, LA Southwest College, and Saddleback College. For two years, she was a full-time A.P. and honors chemistry teacher at Diamond Ranch High School.

At Cypress College, De Roo has been active in the area of outreach, especially related to National Chemistry Week, which is held annually at the Santa Ana Zoo and sponsored by American Chemical Society. She has also participated in demonstrations at local schools and been active with KinderCaminata, and, in spring 2010, she devised and implemented chemistry experiments for high school students to promote their interest in science. Since 2008, De Roo has served as the Chemistry Club Advisor. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, both at California State University, Fullerton.

Billie Pashaie has been at Cypress College since fall 2007. Currently, he is the instruction and outreach librarian. Pashaie also works in the Language Arts Division teaching English as a Second Language courses. He also serves on the SLO Assessment Committee. In addition to Cypress College, he has worked as an academic librarian at the University of California, Los Angeles, Glendale College, and East Los Angeles College. Pashaie has a Master’s in Library and Information Science from UCLA, and a Master of Arts for Teaching ESL from California State University, Los Angeles.

Larry Ramos started working with Cypress College’s as an adjunct instructor in the Auto Tech Collision Repair Department, before being hired full-time in fall 2007. His career as an auto technician began in 1977. Afterwards, he has worked as a managing editor for McMullen Publishing with the company’s various car magazines. He has also worked on the B-2 Bomber with Northrop Grumman in the ‘90s. He always maintained a great relationship with his former Cypress College instructors Jack Dainko and Tony Jones. It was Jones who asked Ramos if he could cover a class for him now and again. That work resulted in an adjunct faculty position at the college, and, when Jones was looking to retire, he urged Ramos to apply for a full-time position.

Ramos believes that Cypress College is one of the finest community colleges this state has to offer.

He enjoys the people he works with and the spirit of collegiality that pervades this institution.

Fumio Ogoshi

Fumio Ogoshi started teaching full time at Cypress College as a Biology Instructor in fall 2007. His teaching career began at University of California, Irvine, and he has also taught at Cerritos College and Rancho Santiago Canyon College. Prior to embarking on a teaching career, Ogoshi was a senior scientist at ArmaGen Technologies, conducting research on neurodegenerative diseases and was also a volunteer scientist for the Ocean Conservation Society. His other research experiences include working at Cypros Pharmaceuticals and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. At Cypress College, he has taught General Biology (majors and non-majors), Human Biology, Marine Biology, and Human Physiology, and is currently the class coordinator for the non-majors general biology course. In addition, he has served as a faculty mentor to Cypress College students conducting research at UC Irvine through the STEM Grant. Ogoshi earned his Bachelor’s of Arts in Biology and Marine Science at the University of San Diego, and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at University of California, Irvine. He conducted his post-doctoral research on Alzheimer’s Disease at University of California, Los Angeles.

Michael Faraci began teaching in Cypress College’s Registered Nursing Program in 2007. Before that, he taught as adjunct faculty at both Golden West and Long Beach City Colleges. In addition to his teaching experience, Faraci has over 11 years clinical nursing experience in both adult and pediatric critical care at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he continues to work in a per diem capacity. At Cypress College, he teaches Beginning Medical/Surgical Nursing, Advanced Medical/Surgical Nursing, Critical Care and Pharmacology. He has been instrumental in integrating high-fidelity simulation into the registered nursing curriculum. In addition to work, Faraci enjoys taking part in humanitarian efforts. Over the last several years, he has participated in several community flu clinics and gone on major health care missions to such areas as Phuket, Thailand and Kenya, Africa. Faraci earned his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Psychology from Central Connecticut State University, Masters of Science degree in Nursing with an emphasis in education from California State University, Los Angeles. In May of 2010, Faraci graduated from the Doctorate of Nursing Practice Program at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, where he is completing his dissertation on The Effects of High-fidelity Simulation on Nurse’s Self-efficacy in Performing Pediatric Advanced Life Support in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Sally Frumkin began teaching in th Nursing Program at Cypress College in fall of 2007 after a varied background in nursing. She has previously taught nursing at private colleges in the Southern California area. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing at California State University, Los Angeles. She later went back to school and completed her master’s of science in Nursing and became a Nurse Practitioner with a specialty in Family Practice. She started her career in nursing as a pediatric nurse and has worked in the field of nursing for over 30 years in a variety of areas, including, medical-surgical, dialysis, and home health care Nursing. She has taught two courses at Cypress for the last four years: Fundamentals of Nursing and Introduction to Medical-Surgical Nursing and Geriatrics.

Marcus Marquardt Health Sciences Division Marcus Marquardt joined Cypress College in fall 2007 as an instructor in the Psychiatric Technician Program. He is a Licensed Psychiatric Technician who has worked in skilled nursing, behavior management, and education for the developmentally disabled.

Throughout his 23-year career, he has also worked as a senior member of a mobile crisis team for three Los Angeles Regional Centers, provided consultation and crisis intervention services for at risk clients, was a credentialed instructor/consultant for the Los Angeles Department of Education providing training to community care providers, and has taught psychiatric technician courses as an adjunct faculty at Mt San Antonio College and San Bernardino Valley College in the areas of acute psychiatric care, skilled nursing, developmental disabilities, and community psychiatric services. He has also worked as an administrator and staff trainer for Licensed Community Care facilities in Los Angeles County. At Cypress College, Marquardt teaches Nursing Science and the behavior modification section of the Developmental Disabilities course. He currently represents the Health Sciences division as a member of the Cypress College Honors Committee, has served on the Cypress College Accreditation Committee (Standard IIB), two hiring committees, mentored a new faculty member, and has been actively involved with the PUENTE Program as a mentor. He graduated the Psychiatric Technician Program at San Bernardino Valley College in 1987, earned two Associate’s degrees from Citrus College, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University, Los Angeles, and is currently working on his Master’s thesis in Sociology from California State University, Los Angeles. In 2009, Marcus received a Special Recognition Award in Graduate Studies at Cal State LA. He has also been appointed to serve on the Committee on Practice, Applied, and Clinical Sociology for the Pacific Sociological Association and presented at the Pacific Sociological Association’s Annual Conference in 2009.

Language Arts Before he began his career in teaching, Joseph Melodia spent 14 years in the title insurance industry, an experience that encouraged him to pursue his education. While working his way from entry-level typist to general manager, he also completed his education. “The majority of our students work and go to school, so I can relate to them,” he says. “This is the most challenging portion of their education and I am grateful for the opportunity to help them succeed.” Melodia came to Cypress College as a full-time English Instructor in 2007, having previously taught at Fullerton College, Riverside Community College and Santiago Canyon College. He teaches all levels of English, and particularly enjoys developmental courses and critical thinking. He is the coordinator of the Legacy Program, an academic transfer program that utilizes the African-American experience for its curriculum. The program’s goal — increasing transfer rates of underrepresented students — is something he is particularly passionate about. “It’s exciting to be a part of a campus as diverse and positive as Cypress,” Joseph says. “I can’t imagine teaching anywhere else.” Melodia holds an Associate’s degree from Orange Coast College, a Bachelor’s in English Education from California State University, Long Beach, and dual Master’s degrees from Chapman University: an M.A. in English Literature and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing.

Ruth Gutierrez Language Arts Ruth Gutierrez began teaching at Cypress College as an instructor in the Language Arts Division in fall 2007. She has been the Curriculum Representative for the Language Arts Division since 2009. She is also a member of the Reading Department Scholarship Committee since 2007. Her teaching career began in 1994 with Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School Highly Gifted Magnet School. Gutierrez has taught at Santa Ana College as an adjunct reading instructor for Continuing Education from 1995 until 1999.

Her experience as an instructor also includes Valley High School, and Segerstrom Fundamental High School. Gutierrez earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and her teaching credential at California State University, Fullerton. She completed her Master’s of Education at Walden University in 2006 with an emphasis in Literacy and Learning in the Content Area.

He is currently the co-coordinator of the Human Anatomy and the Human Physiology programs in the Biology Department, cofounded the Human Anatomy & Physiology study room, and has co-written a new customized human anatomy laboratory manual.

Dr. Sanchez-Duran has been involved in the STEM grant and has participated in numerous high school outreach events that aim at bridging the gap between high school and college. He has served on hiring committees, has been a new faculty mentor, and is currently the SLO representative for the SEM division. He is a firm believer that an instructor is both an educator and a facilitator. As an educator, the instructor provides the students with essential information that they need to know about the subject matter. As a facilitator, the instructor guides the students in the direction they should go to find answers and to solve problems. Sanchez-Duran obtained his Ph.D. in May 2001 at the University of Missouri-Columbia in Biological Sciences (with an emphasis in Neurophysiology).

His thesis work on neural plasticity of the central nerve pathways that regulate feeding behavior in Aplysia californica produced one co-author publication and four first author publications. These studies involved examining functional neural regeneration of central nerve pathways that elicit fictive feeding by using single cell electrophysiology. He completed his post-doctoral research at the University of California, Irvine.

Robin De Roo Science, Engineering and Mathematics Robin De Roo began working at Cypress College as an adjunct faculty member in fall 2003 and was hired into a tenure-track position in fall 2007. She has also taught at California State University Long Beach and Fullerton, Glendale Community College, Whittier College, Fullerton College, Mount San Antonio College, LA Southwest College, and Saddleback College. For two years, she was a full-time A.P. and honors chemistry teacher at Diamond Ranch High School.

At Cypress College, De Roo has been active in the area of outreach, especially related to National Chemistry Week, which is held annually at the Santa Ana Zoo and sponsored by American Chemical Society. She has also participated in demonstrations at local schools and been active with KinderCaminata, and, in spring 2010, she devised and implemented chemistry experiments for high school students to promote their interest in science. Since 2008, De Roo has served as the Chemistry Club Advisor. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, both at California State University, Fullerton.

Social Science Bryan Seiling’s journey to tenure is “the product of a quite wonderful and rewarding journey stretching back nearly two decades.” He was first hired at Cypress in August 1994, one week before the start of the fall semester as an emergency replacement. Over the next 13 years as an adjunct instructor his roots here grew deep. “While I continued to teach at other schools and work in jobs outside of education to make ends meet, Cypress was always a special place. It afforded me not only opportunities to teach and better myself as an educator, but also to participate in the larger campus life as well.” He attended division meetings, was active with the Teacher Preparation Program, became the Faculty Advisor for the Future Educators Club, and was an original member of the Charles Pound Memorial Scholarship Committee. In 2007, Seiling was named Adjunct Instructor of the Year by the Faculty Senate as recognition of this work. “It was a proud moment, only to be topped three days later when I was hired as a full-time instructor here at the college. I must admit, that was a pretty great week! “ Since becoming a full-time instructor, his participation has broadened as an active member of various faculty committees such as Program Review, Direction One, SLO GE Program Committee, Social Science Division Technology Committee, and the Charles Pound Memorial Scholarship Committee. He is also the faculty advisor for the Educational Ambassadors. Seiling earned his Master’s degree in History from the University of Southern California, where he also earned his Bachelor’s degree with a triple-major in History, Political Science, and Gender Studies. He has also worked in theater production with the Center Theatre Group and the Hollywood Bowl for over a decade.

Gloria Badal Social Science Division Goloria Badal has taught in community colleges since 2002 as an adjunct faculty member at Riverside Community College, Golden West College, Santiago Canyon College, Saddleback College, and Irvine Valley College, as well as at California State University, Fullerton. She was awarded Adjunct Teacher of the Year at Riverside Community College in 2005 and was nominated for Outstanding Faculty of the Year at Cypress College in 2007. As the Department Coordinator for Political Science at Cypress College, she has taught courses in Middle East Politics, Comparative Politics, Political Theory and American Government. Badal also was the Advisor of the Muslim Student Association at Cypress College for two years. A Cypress College alumna, she earned bachelor’s degree at California State University, Fullerton. She also completed an M.A. in Political Science at CSUF and has begun work on a Ph.D. in Political Science at University of California, Santa Barbara. Her major fields were American Politics and International Relations with a minor in Comparative Politics and Political Theory.
