ACQUIRING CYPRUS CITIZENSHIP BY INVESTMENT For Non-EU citizens, Cyprus has a scheme for naturalization of investors. As part of reforms aimed to attract investments in Cyprus, the amount required to be invested in order to attain Cyprus citizenship has been significantly decreased. The Scheme for Naturalisation by Exception of the Investors in Cyprus (‘the Scheme’) was introduced by virtue of section 111 A (2) of the Civil Registry Laws and provides that the Council of Ministers may allow the Naturalization of non-Cypriot entrepreneurs investing in Cyprus (‘the Investor’). Additionally, the Scheme grants Cyprus Citizenship to the Investor’s spouse as well as financially dependent children to the age of 28, without any obligation to meet any financial criteria. Privatisation in Cyprus
yprus is making steady progress in restructuring its economy.
Although the year ahead will be a challenging time for one of the smallest EU member states, the economic adjustment programme remains on track, with progress made in all key objectives set out by the country’s international lenders. Cyprus is a small and adaptable freemarket economy with a positive long-term outlook despite the current challenging environment. The island, strategically located at the crossroads of three continents, promotes itself as the business gateway between Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and leverages it’s highly educated, English-speaking population, its EU and Eurozone memberships, excellent information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and business friendly environment continue to attract international companies and investment. Company formation, tax planning, trusts, foreign exchange trading and fund administration are all strong segments of the business services industry, encouraged by the close to 50 double taxation treaties and a legal system based on English law. The key instrument of Cyprus holding companies has attracted hundreds of thousands of companies to set up in Cyprus and channel their investments into regional markets through the island. The attraction of Cyprus has not faded and the number of applications filed for registrations of new companies increased during 2014. A major success story for Cyprus is the maritime sector, which hosts the largest ship management centre in the EU. The Cyprus Registry is classified as the tenth largest merchant fleet in the world and the third largest fleet in the EU and flying its flag are some 1100 ocean-going vessels and 767 non-convention size vessels.
Privatisation is another opportunity for Cyprus. The ‘semi-state organisations’ and state organisations may prove to be too inefficient. The demise of Cyprus Airlines is one example and the window of opportunity to sell has now closed. Other targets for privatisation are the electricity provider the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), the dominant telecommunications provider Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) and the Ports Authority. Several new marinas are also planned in key coastal towns of Cyprus, with the luxury marina complex Limassol Marina already attracting record sales.
Trade and Investment
More than half of Cyprus’ trade in goods is with the European Union. Cyprus’ main export partners are Greece, the United Kingdom, Germany and Lebanon. The main domestic export commodities are pharmaceutical products, photo-sensitive devices, and raw and manufactured

food products. The three leading import partners are Greece, Israel and the United Kingdom and the island mainly imports hydrocarbons, machinery, chemicals, vehicles, and iron and steel. As a small open economy that is currently dependent on energy imports, Cyprus’ trade balance is traditionally in deficit, while its services balance is normally in surplus. Foreign direct investment (FDI) is expected to recover as a result of new initiatives under way to attract more investment, especially investments relating to natural gas exploitation. With regards to FDI flows in Cyprus, the economic activity that is set to continue significant investments is the financial and insurance sectors.
Tourism
Cyprus would be wise to concentrate on developing more tourism opportunities in 2015. The latest statistics show that during the period Jan-Nov 2014 a total of 2,384,375 tourists arrived, by the time the figures for December are calculated it will show an increase of around 1.5%. The average length of stay on the island is 11 days with expenditure per tourist calculated at €80 per day. Who are these tourists? Here are the top ten from the latest figures: Other tourists also arrived from Poland 28033, France 27191, Belgium 25204, Finland 23839, Gulf Countries 23672, Austria 23154 and The Netherlands 21729.
Promising outlook for 2015
Cyprus has an open, free-market, servicebased economy. With a strong business environment, highly educated workforce and favourable tax regime. With measures to reform public spending, privatise major utilities, accelerate initiatives to boost investment, develop the investment fund sector and a push forward with natural gas exploitation, there is scope for Cyprus to quickly return to the prosperity of recent years. 2015 will be an exciting positive year for the island of Cyprus. This month we offer more interesting articles and features written in both English and Russian. cypruslifestylemag@gmx.com

Minthis Hills
Unique resort

W
hy is it different? What makes it so special? In the words of the architect ‘’It’s about design, quality, lifestyle and the future.’’
The whole resort is ecologically friendly within a naturally protected area. Properties are built to enhance the environment. The villas are built into the contours of the mountain. Using local stone, from the local village, using natural local plants and trees. The exclusive design of the properties means that during hot summers, air conditioning is not required.
The concept of Minthis Hills relates to ‘Barefoot Luxury’, to look at living in an atmosphere of clean air, open spaces and energy from the environment. The types of
It’s about design, quality, lifestyle and the future buyers at Minthis Hills are ‘lifestyle buyers’ who are looking for a different way of living. Naturally the resort will have facilities like a shopping centre, tennis academy, a spa, but a different kind of spa, not just a gym, but a full lifestyle kind of spa/club. A village square with underground parking, where as a resident you can be an active resident or a passive one. Horse riding and nature trails are all part of this resort.
Planning permission has been obtained for 600 properties across the 500 hectares of Minthis Hills resort and has been divided into 11 autonomous neighbourhoods. The Masterplan provides for a choice of 8 different houses in the range. But each house can be customised to what the buyer really wants. Everything can be customised. The Architects will work on the customer’s needs. Can be bigger or smaller, it will be fitted and designed to what you really want. Plus Minthis Hills offers a whole lifestyle kind of management – Not just property management with security but a whole lifestyle service to assist residents.
Why is it so special?
It is the result of collaboration between internationally renowned experts who have created an extraordinary resort that

THE DEVELOPER
When we talk about the team that developed Minthis Hills, we firstly talk about the Developer – Pafilia. Founded in 1977 Pafilia is the largest privately owned residential developer in Cyprus. will captivate your senses. Combining the virtues of sophisticated living, exquisite design and mesmerising views. Minthis Hills offers residents the chance to truly unwind and indulge in the pleasures of contemporary living. Enjoying views as vast as they are captivating, Minthis Hills is a resort that celebrates its surroundings. With inspired Mediterranean architecture dedicated service and a liberating sense of space. It boasts a breath taking hillside location in the heart of the Paphos wine producing region, yet it’s just ten minutes away from Paphos city with its wealth of amenities. A key tenet of the design concept was to create a masterplan which is fully compatible with the sensitive natural landscape of the Tsada mountains. It was recognised at the outset that the density of development should be limited in order to ensure that the integrity of the mountainous character was retained while providing residents with unimaginable space. The vision is now being realised, the result is a truly extraordinary differentiated resort.
DESIGN
The architects were asked to make Minthis Hills the best in the Mediterranean. This was a major challenge in a market ranging from the ‘Costas of Spain’ to the shores of Croatia and the many Greek islands. The architects had to make a unique design concept. One which would define Minthis Hills and give differentiation from all the rest. Authenticity to Cyprus was of paramount importance in the design process.
The architects set out to understand the local vernacular so that they could develop a modern interpretation of the traditional architecture and one which references the forms of the villages and buildings in the surrounding highlands yet was fresh and modern and could appeal to buyers from all around the world. The architects visited many of these villages which told a story of ‘form and materials’. They looked at past buildings and past projects from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, and ignored the ubiquitous Mediterranean style villa and then beauti fully simple and elegant forms began to emerge. You can see these influences at Minthis Hills, the single pitched roofs, the courtyards, the outdoor spaces, the distinctive stone clad walls. By embracing these traditional forms and using local materials in a modern way, Minthis Hills has become a uniquely Cypriot modern architecture. Minthis Hills is definitely not just a re sidential estate or even just a golf resort, it is a unique resort. The architects have paid harmonious attention to detail, quality of materials and generosity of space and light. The idea that residents should live a healthy, peaceful and active lifestyle was critical to
the master plan. You can see the extreme care that has been taken to locate roads and buildings to enhanced views while avoiding disturbing sensitive natural areas. Inside the houses there is a blur between the outside and the inside (My visit and tour of one of the houses confirmed this). Pools, walled courtyards, double height spaces and cosy nooks are part of every Minthis Hills villa. Then there are the views, spectacular, breath taking and totally unique. The villas have been designed to frame these views, providing a never ending show of brilliant light, dramatic weather and varying seasons.
QUALITY
Minthis Hills has global significance and appeal. They have pushed the design ceiling way up and have significantly changed the game in Cyprus. This commitment to quality design has created value for investors, businesses and ultimately the island of Cyprus. Minthis Hills has influenced other developments in Cyprus. Other developers have noticed what has been achieved and are responding with better developments of their own. This can

perienced team ensure your every comfort and convenience is taken care of, enabling you to relax with ease and enjoy a memorable experience at Minthis Hills.
Wine Region
The area surrounding Minthis Hills is home to one of the most celebrated wine routes on the island. Located in this wine producing region it seemed natural to offer residents the opportunity to produce their own label wine, with vineyard allotments, olive groves, and eco-plots available for rent on the resort. Residents are able to to receive initial ‘vine training’ and learn how to tend to their own plantations. Alternatively for those who prefer the fruits without the labour, a specialist can take care of it for you, allowing you to relax and reap the benefits.
RELAX AND REJUVENATE
Minthis Hills offers an organic experience, blending style and sustainability in equal measure to ensure residents enjoy all the pleasures of Mediterranean living. At 560 metres above sea level the area enjoys a micro climate benefiting from cool breezes and low humidity even during the summer. With no heavy industry on the island, and close proximity to the sea, Cyprus’ air
quality is invariably clear from any chemical pollutants. Minthis Hills adds a further fresh air dimension, a green environment. We all know that green spaces improve both physical health and mental well-being.
Location Location Location – Paphos
Paphos, the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty is situated on the south western coast of Cyprus. It is home to a great extent of the island’s rich cultural heritage including a medieval fortress, frescoed tombs and remarkable mosaics. Almost an open air museum in itself, UNESCO added the ENTIRE TOWN to its world heritage list. In addition to its rich culture Paphos also offers all the essentials of a cosmopolitan city including stylish boutiques, fine restaurants, modern amenities, first class medical facilities and great cafes. Minthis Hills is within easy reach of local areas and international transport links.
The Future for Property Development
So, what of the future? The developers Pafilia are already challenging the architects to continue to innovate and lead design even further. They are trying to produce more and better villa choices, more sustainable design, more sensitive to the land and environment, more inspiring. Sophisticated buyers travel the world and know quality design when they see it. They
are demanding higher design quality and Pafilia have this available in Minthis Hills. To achieve this required a partnership with the planning authorities, the government and to innovate to go forward.

CYPRUS As the third largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa and has an estimated total population of 885,000. It is seven hours ahead of New York, two hours ahead of London, one hour behind Moscow, and five hours behind Beijing. The official language is Greek but due to the country’s status as a British colony from 1878 to 1960, English is widely spoken across the island and used in commerce. The main cities of Cyprus are Nicosia, being the capital city, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. Nicosia is located near the heart of the island and is the main business hub, as well as the seat of Government. Enjoying over 340 days of sunshine a year, Cyprus offers a high standard of living and political stability within an EU country which provides an advantageous tax regime for residents and businesses. As such Cyprus is attracting relocating companies, individuals and their families from around the world.

A DYNAMIC BUSINESS CENTRE Cyprus today is a dynamic business centre, with companies benefitting from low running costs and access to top end services including business administration, accounting, auditing, legal services and fund management.
Cyprus’s role in international tax planning has risen significantly in the last few years. On the OECD White List of jurisdictions complying with international best practise, it has ensured that its tax regime is simple, transparent and entirely compliant with EU laws and directives, and has Double Tax Treaties in place with over 50 countries. Cyprus enjoys growth in strong economic sectors such as tourism and shipping, and attention is turning towards the opportunities Cyprus can offer corporate structures looking to access high-growth markets such as Europe, Russia, China and India. The innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of Cyprus as a jurisdiction to do business in puts it at the heart of global international business centres. It is well established and widely respected as one of the key jurisdictions for investment by companies and individuals.

BLUE CROSS MEDICAL CENTRE PAPHOS Private Medical Treatment in Paphos We all wish we could remain fit and healthy forever, but time and age catches up with our bodies as we enter our ‘senior years’. When we think about attending any private medical facility the word ‘expensive’ springs to mind and only adds to the fear of seeking medical treatment when we need it the most. But on a recent visit to the Blue Cross Medical Centre in Paphos, we discovered what could be described as a breath of fresh air in the private medical world. We met with George Kaniklides, General Manager of the Saint George Polyclinic and Blue Cross Medical Centre in Paphos. ‘’We are a general medical provider and we perform things like hip and knee replacements on a daily basis’’ said George. Doctors are performing eye cataract laser surgeries on a weekly basis plus they offer a unique service called ‘Lithotripsy’, a special technique for
the treatment of kidney stones that does not require surgery. Instead, high energy shock waves are passed through the body and used to break the stones into small pieces as small as grains of sand, these pieces can they pass from the body naturally. The St George Polyclinic and Blue Cross Private Hospital Ltd is the outcome of a merger that took place in 2012. The outcome was to create a unique and comprehensive medical facility for the Paphos region.
‘’We now have 5 surgeons, 4 general practitioners and a total staff of over 60 people plus we have close relationships with other specialists in other hospitals’’
St George’s Polyclinic The group offers the latest, state of art medical equipment which has been installed to accommodate today’s diverse patient needs. The St George’s Polyclinic also contains a retirement home situated on the second floor and operates a day care clinic. The radiology department is also situated here. Importantly there are back up systems in place, for example there are two radiology departments, two CT scanners and currently Blue Cross is accepting patients from the Paphos General Hospital. Its excellence in patient care is further enhanced by the nursing team. Dedicated to their vocation, the team is headed-up by UK training standards with extensive international nursing experience. Blue Cross also provides communication skills training for its staff team to enable effective relationships with not just patients but also with relatives and visitors.
13
Do Not Worry Blue Cross is accredited by all the major international medical insurance providers including the British ones like BUPA. They have agreements with all the Cypriot insurance companies. However, ‘’We are a medical facility and we are here to help people as much as we can, so we can help those who do not have medical insurance and people should not be afraid to come and discuss with us at any time’’ said George. The in-patient department provides facilities in the same way as any modern hospital. All rooms (50 beds) are en-suite and fully air-conditioned. They have satellite television, directdial telephones and a nurse-call system. On the same level there is a high-tech intensive care unit and separate maternity unit.
Physiotherapy Suite The physiotherapy suite contains an indoor heated swimming/treatment pool and provides a full range of
professional Hydrotherapy (Aquatic Physiotherapy) treatments. The patient profile at Blue Cross is across all ages and all nationalities as many staff speaks multiple languages in addition to Greek including English, Russian, German and French. There are three modern operating theatres for minor and major operations at the Blue Cross and 2 others in the St George Hospital which is dedicated especially for day care users.
‘’We are a medical facility and we are here to help people as much as we can, so we can help those who do not have medical insurance and people should not be afraid to come and discuss with us at any time’’
The St George and Blue Cross Private Hospital Ltd operate a 24-hours outpatient department providing full medical / surgical support for all emergencies and accidents including road traffic injuries. The out-patient department has an ambulance service for home, hotel or airport transfers. The ambulance service provides fully trained paramedics from the British NHS (National Health Service). D N and
Vets
A leading veterinary practice in Paphos, Cyprus Dimitriou, Demitris and Natalia Veterinary Clinic
17
T
here are many veterinary practices across Cyprus, all providing professional care for animals. How do you decide which one is the best for your pets?
Recommendations usually help. Animal lovers tend to share important information about veterinary clinics, dog grooming, kennels and catteries and pet shop suppliers. We all want the best for our furry friends. We want our pets to be treated in a caring way. Plus we like to know that the vets are professionals and know what they are doing. We want to know that we can TRUST the vets taking care of our animals. Unfortunately many of us have to take our pets to the vets in emergency cases and tend to worry about the financial costs involved. D and N Veterinary Clinic have been taking care of ‘animals and their owners’ since 2004 and during the past ten years have developed a good reputation in the Paphos region. The professional team at D and N vets focus on taking care of your animal first and do not worry about the ‘who will pay’ scenario as is usual in far too many veterinary clinics.
A fully equipped clinic with diagnostic tools for simple vaccinations through to complex surgery providing treatment and preventative healthcare, dentistry, radiology service (x-rays) and a laboratory service.
SOME TIPS
KENNEL AND CATTERY
Try not to worry when you take your animals to a veterinary clinic. Remember that dogs can pick up on people’s emotions. Remain calm and reassure your pet that all is fine. It is not surprising that most animals develop a fear of visits to the veterinary clinic. (Relate this to the fact that when humans visit a hospital, our blood pressure increases significantly). Our pets have no idea that the veterinarian is looking out for their well-being. All they know is that once or twice a year they’re bundled into a car and driven to a place with barking dogs and howling cats and people with white laboratory coats who smell like antiseptic. That’s not so bad, but being lifted onto a cold, slippery metal table to have a thermometer inserted in their rectum is far from pleasant.
Going on a holiday does not need to be stressful for you or your pet. D and N offer a full service kennel and cattery including indoor and outdoor runs, heated and air conditioning when required. Play time is organised for pets and dog walks.

New Mobile for 2015
Which one? We are big fans of mobile technology, but we are more impressed by what’s to come in 2015. Here we reveal the four upcoming smartphones that you should be most excited about in 2015.

iPhone
HTC One M9 Samsung Galaxy S6
iPhone 7 / iPhone 6s The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were released in September 2014 and in the months leading up to that the rumour mill went into overdrive. Be prepared for more of the same with the iPhone 7, which will launch in September 2015 running iOS9. As always, we are expecting a faster processor and some upgraded specifications, but little change to the design. (Note that it will probably be called the iPhone 6s rather than iPhone 7.)
Samsung Galaxy S6 If you’re a Samsung fan but would rather stick to a phone than a phablet (A class of mobile device designed to combine the functions of a smartphone and tablet) then
the S6 will be just what you’re looking for. Samsung’s finally expected to tackle the plastic build quality criticism that its S-series handsets have received, using an all-metal design in line with that of the Galaxy Alpha. We wouldn’t be surprised to also see a quad-HD screen, plus plenty of other radical new features. We should see the Samsung Galaxy S6 unveiled at a Samsung Unpacked event sometime in early 2015.
HTC One M9 Supporters of the HTC One M9, just can’t wait for a better version of the phone. Little is known about the HTC One M9, but you can bet there will be one and that it will be an extremely desirable handset. Based on
LG G4
HTC’s previous form, the Android Lollipop -based HTC One M9 won’t be here in time for MWC 2015 (Mobile World Congress 2015 – Barcelona 2-5 March) but we can expect to see it around sometime in 2015.
LG G4 We stand by our statement that the LG G3 was the best phone in 2014. Things can only get better with the LG G4. The LG G3 was officially released in Europe at the end of June 2014. The LG G4 should be here around the same time in summer 2015. Tel: +357 96329144 boris@bbcomputerlab.com www.bbcomputerlab.com
