THE ART OF CAPTURING PERSONALITY Over time, Johann Sauty has developed a more soberand refined artistic approach strongly inspired by photography idols such as Helmut Newton, Bruce Weber, Peter Lindbergh and Herb Ritts. Renowned for their aesthetic refinement, classicism and unfailing elegance, these artists will never cease to influence his work. Johann doesn’t see himself as a photographer of objects, but of people. The quest for the right location and atmosphere for shooting is of prime importance for delivering the desired mood and effect. This attitude has made him realise that, at the end of the day, it is not fashion that inspires him so much as the person standing in front of him and the setting in which he finds himself.

THE MAN BEHIND THE CAMERA His aesthetic but also human look is undoubtedly shared by Andreas Gmur. Following up a chance meeting, the photographer and the jeweller established a close working relationship during an initial shooting session at the Hotel President Wilson. Beyond their professional partnership, a deep bond of trust arose between the two men united by their love of art. Naturally, Andreas Gmur gave Johann total freedom to express his creativity and let the artefacts of JAG Jewelry speak for themselves. This freedom pervades Johann’s most captivating shots, such as the black model sporting a superb Massai breastplate around her neck, the dazzling red contrasting perfectly with her ebony skin. According to Andreas Gmur, the personality of the photographer shines through his works. UNE PASSION ENFOUIE Après des études de psychologie entre Genève et Paris, et à la suite de stages insipides, Johann Sauty se rend à l’évidence et comprend qu’il n’est pas à sa place dans cet univers bureaucratique. Depuis toujours intéressé par l’art, le jeune homme se lance à la recherche de nouvelles expériences créatives. Et c’est aux côtés de l’une de ses proches, dans un laboratoire de développement photo argentique, que Johann découvre la photographie. Rapidement, il se prend de passion pour cet art singulier, enchaînant les formations et se spécialisant dans le portrait. Photographe en herbe, Johann commence sa carrière grâce à son réseau d’amies mannequins dont il réalise les books. Un premier pas dans le monde de la mode qui l’emmène vers ses futurs partenaires.

NOUVELLE VIE De recommandations en opportunités, Johann rencontre de nouveaux clients provenant d’univers divers et variés. Des reportages pour le milieu de la presse aux shootings lifestyle pour des marques prestigieuses, le photographe se plaît à mettre en valeur aussi bien les personnalités que les produits d’exception. Aujourd’hui, après 20 ans de carrière, son book se partage entre plusieurs secteurs d’activité comme le luxe, aux côtés de somptueuses maisons telles que Jaeger-LeCoultre, Van Cleef & Arpels, mais également l’hôtellerie, le sport ou la musique ou l’industrie, que ce soit pour des entreprises Suisses ou internationales. Une passion qui l’amène à voyager aux quatre coins du globe, d’Europe en Asie et en Amérique latine et Caraïbes, notamment à Cuba, où il pose ses valises pour quelques mois. Un mode de vie nomade bien loin de ses anciennes habitudes et pourtant en totale adéquation avec sa personnalité.

Une liberté à l’origine de clichés des plus captivants comme le portrait de ce mannequin à la peau noir ébène portant à son cou le somptueux pectoral Massaï dont la couleur rouge marque un parfait contraste avec sa peau nue.

Selon Andreas Gmur, la personnalité d’un photographe se transmet au travers de ses œuvres. Une idée que Johann semble plutôt approuver, lui dont les choix artistiques ne sont que le séduisant témoignage de sa propre personne.

While the Umami restaurant offers exquisite delicacies representing the best of Japanese cuisine, the Arabesque offers authentic Lebanese dishes and the Bayview, headed by French master chef Michel Roth, lives up to the challenge of its one-star Michelin Guide rating. I have always thought of cuisine as an act of creation unto itself, an art that arouses euphoria and joy just like a jewel.

LA CUISINE, TOUT UN ART L’autre intérêt -et non des moindres- de l’Hôtel Président Wilson est celui d’une cuisine investie d’une démarche artistique indéniable, s’exprimant au travers des fourneaux de ses trois restaurants. L’Umami propose une cuisine japonaise éphémère, l’Arabesque régale ses

convives de mets libanais et le Bayview, emmené par le chef français Michel Roth, peut s’enorgueillir d’une étoile au Guide Michelin. J’ai toujours considéré la cuisine comme une création à part entière, un art suscitant euphorie et réjouissance au même titre qu’un bijou.

UNE PHILOSOPHIE EN COMMUN C’est donc avec conviction que je me suis investi dans un partenariat solide et amical avec l’Hôtel Président Wilson, qui ne s’est jamais démenti à ce jour. En étroite collaboration, divers événements sont organisés entre les murs de cet hôtel dont l’élégance fait référence, au travers d’ateliers de création joaillière. Des petits groupes à l’atmosphère intimiste, réunissent des amoureux de la joaillerie prêts à rêver et créer leurs propres bijoux, tandis que l’Hôtel Président Wilson met à leur disposition, dégustation culinaire et détente au sein du Spa. Un service sur mesure ainsi que la découverte des suites de l’hôtel donnent aux participants l’opportunité d’explorer un lieu d’exception. PRINCESS CAROLINE MURAT, A RENOWNED ARTIST AND ARISTOCRAT Founded in 2006 by Princess Caroline Murat, this musical occasion was just begging to be created in her opinion. Also known under the name of Caroline Haffner, the budding pianist whose talent was revealed when she was only 9 years old studied at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, which had never before admitted such a young pupil. Her youthful virtuosity earned her a series of prestigious prizes during the 1970s, including the Marguerite Long competition and the Geneva International Music Competition. Not content with resting on her laurels, however, Caroline Murat decided to diversify by passing on her talents to younger generations, working as a teacher in a number of prestigious universities including Harvard. I wholeheartedly share her passion for classical music, that rigorous art form whose subtle lightness I can enjoy at the hands of one of my daughters, a young and promising talent. MUSIC, THE LANGUAGE OF THE EMOTIONS Having contributed to the foundation of the Verbier Festival Piano Academy and the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad festival, Caroline Murat is now artistic director of the Gstaad New Year Music Festival, through which she seeks to promote upcoming young artists. According to Princess Murat, music is also transmitted through the shared pleasure of talent and listening. The pleasure I feel, just like a performer launching into the first notes of a work, brings us together, in the precision required to bestow beauty on the notes which seem, notwithstanding, to fly out of their own accord, in the precise expression of the composer’s emotions, and in the life encapsulated in these scores, which would be but useless scraps of paper without the performer who transforms and sometimes transgresses them, all in the cause of beauty.

VIVE LA DIFFERENCE! (AS LONG AS IT’S BEAUTIFUL) Every year, Caroline Murat selects works and musicians that surprise her, using her intuition to concoct a pro-

gramme composed entirely of talented and exceptional musicians of varied origins spanning a broad spectrum of musical genres. This year again, Gstaad will ring to the notes of jazz revisited and enchanted by voices without which music would lack the profound meaning we see in it. Caroline Murat offers us the pleasure of discovering wellknown works, sometimes paraphrased by ingenious arrangements, and lesser known works to a loyal audience of music aficionados.

As in music, the hand of the artist is guided by the interpretation of the emotions, and I cannot ignore these at the moment when I bestow life on one of my creations. This event rich in innovative interpretations has given me a taste for the stage… and my workshop is just that, a stage on which each viewer sees a spectacle of their own emotions.

CAROLINE MURAT, UNE PRINCESSE ET UNE ARTISTE DE RENOM Créé en 2006 par Caroline Murat, cet événement musical lui est apparu comme une évidence. Connue également sous le nom de Caroline Haffner, la très jeune pianiste dont le talent s’est affiché à seulement 9 ans a intégré le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, institution qui jusque-là n’avait jamais accepté d’élève aussi jeune. Sa jeunesse prédisposée à la virtuosité, jalonnée de récompenses égrenées dans les années 70, comme le Marguerite Long ou le Concours International de Virtuosité de Genève, a prédisposé Caroline Murat à diversification et, ne pouvant simplement en rester là, elle s’est tournée vers la transmission, officiant comme professeur dans différentes universités réputées comme Harvard. Je partage indéniablement son amour pour la musique classique, art rigoureux s’il en est, dont je peux respirer la légèreté subtile auprès de l’une de mes filles, encore très jeune musicienne de talent en devenir.

LA MUSIQUE, LE LANGAGE DES ÉMOTIONS Caroline Murat, après avoir jadis participé à la création de la Piano Academy du Festival de Verbier et aux Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, se consacre aujourd’hui au Gstaad New Year Music Festival, afin de promouvoir des talents prometteurs. Selon la Princesse Murat, la transmission de la musique se fait également par le plaisir partagé du talent et de l’écoute. Ce plaisir que je ressens, au même titre que ces artistes osant les premières notes d’une œuvre, rapproche nos expériences… dans la précision nécessaire à la beauté des notes qui pour-

tant semblent s’envoler en toute liberté, dans l’expression précise des émotions du compositeur, dans la vie transmise à ces partitions qui ne seraient que du papier inutile sans l’artiste qui les transforme et les transgresse parfois, mais toujours au nom de la beauté… nous nous retrouvons !

UNE ODE À LA DIFFÉRENCE POURVU QU’ELLE SOIT BELLE Chaque année, Caroline Murat sélectionne les œuvres et les musiciens qui la surprennent, son intuition au service d’un programme composé uniquement de talents, de musiciens d’exception d’origines diverses et aux genres musicaux variés. Cette année encore, Gstaad sera suspendu aux notes d’un jazz revisité et enchanté par les voix sans lesquelles parfois, la musique n’aurait pas le sens profond que nous lui accordons. Caroline Murat offre le plaisir de la découverte d’œuvres connues, parfois revisitées avec génie, ou encore balbutiantes, à un public passionné et fidèle.

Tout comme pour la musique, l’interprétation des émotions guide la main de l’Artiste et je ne peux les ignorer au moment de donner vie à l’une de mes créations. Cet événement riche en interprétations innovantes m’a donné le goût de la scène… et mon atelier en est une sur laquelle j’offre à chacun(e) le spectacle de ses émotions.
