01 PROJECT BACKGROUND ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION PROJECT AIMS & OBJECTIVES
ABSTRACT This project is a thematic studio based on the theme of ‘sustaining humanities’ architecture for people, place and time. Designing for sustainability has been a fundamental issue for architects in our time within global and regional contexts. In line with the current discourse on sustainability, it upholds the belief that architecture can create better places, that architecture can affect society and humanity, and that it can have a role in making a place civilized by making a community liveable. To achieve this aim, understand the contextual situations and target user group are the most important fundamental to design a successful site-responded architecture. Hence, the coming proposed design project has to respond and reflected to the site and bring out the main theme and also fulfill the needs and wants of the target user group. Besides, there are also few considerations involved in this project, such as the development of integration with technology, environment and cultural context.
INTRODUCTION This project is to design a socio-cultural centre, social centre which name as ‘City Lobby’ that located at Johor Bahru City, Malaysia. According to research conducted by several universities locally and abroad, one weak component of the city is its socio-cultural aspect, which relates to having a platform for public interaction extending beyond lifestyle centre where it is more of a people to a product rather than people-to-people interaction. Thus this project calls for designing a ‘City Lobby’, which will engage and reengage the city’s local population and visiting tourists from other places. Students are required to design a building within 3,000 square meters with 3 levels and maximum 5 levels. And come with at least 34 parkings that include 2 handicap parking and 2 services parking. Hence I am proposing a Biophilic Mediatheque to bring in plants to calm the overwhelming building and try to bring out the culture through media to let the locals and visitors to embrace it by providing them an interaction space. A quality public place and building where its architecture can create great opportunities to build and strengthen the people’s connection. ‘Through architecture it is possible to gauge many things about a culture and its people, such as lifestyle, artistic sensibilities and social structure.’ (Damen. “History and Civilization”. 2008)
PROJECT AIMS & OBJECTIVES By following the given brief, to have this ‘City Lobbyâ€? is to encourage positive engagement between the public, an opportunity for youth, elderly and adult public to stamp and deďŹ ne the place through their own or collaborative activities. Besides, this project is to achieve this aims and objectives : 1.
Promote and preserve the history and culture of local to the community and tourist of Johor Bahru City.
2.
To attract and encourage the younger generation to embrace and appreciate this culture and history that would bring the community united again.
3.
Create engaging and interactive space for the users to utilize to mark their own identity on the space.
4.
Provide an open and public socio-cultural hub for the existing community to connect, gather and socialize.

This site have a contrast site surrounding as it is placed between Jalan Trus and Jalan Wong Ah Fook, while Jalan Trus is a road that is full with cultural event and historical shophouses, but Jalan Wong Ah Fook is a road that is full with well developed buildings along it. This site is also sandwich in between the JBCC and City Square that connects with the ICQ. With this strategic location, the site can make use of current advantages to connect and gather the locals and visitors at this place. In the same time, not only creating connectivity of the pedestrians but also attracting the vehicular attentions.

This will allow the site to become a gathering point for the user group and encourage interactions between the people.

Connectivity of Pedestrian This shows the existing pedestrian happen in the site, which the site become a pass by when pedestrian wanted to go from Jalan Wong Ah Fook to Jalan Trus. This can become one of the strength that can be used during design to connect the road together and create connectivity between each road to have more pedestrian willing to use the site.

Pedestrian (Day Time) During Daytime, there is higher density of pedestrian activity happening around the site. With the height of building that creating shading in the area, the users are willing to walk around. But except for shopping centre, there are not much public spaces for the people to stop and rest, people are wandering around or sitting in front of the shopping mall area. Hence, the site is proposed with this city lobby is also providing a public area for the people to utilise it.

DESIGN DESIGN INTENTION INTENTION Proposing a Biophilic Mediatheque as the City Lobby of Johor Bahru by bring the community to embrace the different races culture that they don't even appreciate. As the diversity of community around the area, causes prejudice of speciďŹ c races from another that refuse to hang around the site, especially the locals who running business over there. This Mediatheque is to bring in all the community and present the culture through media way to make the community to know more about it. This Mediatheque is also having different functional spaces such as open amphitheatre, market and workshop that not only work like what it is but also encouraging interactions between the users. Besides, biophilic means the urge of human to connect with the nature, as there is lack of green open space around the site, the community does not get to enjoy the nature and green in this site. So proposing biophilic into the mediatheque is not only adding plants to it but also considering other factors such as temperature control, the sound and visual connectivity, that allow the users to feel relax once coming in. One of the reason of proposing the biophilic is also to prevent the existing community around the site to get over stressed by the overwhelmed skyscrapers, which is the ‘steel forest’, so that they can have a temporary escape from it.
SITE RESPONSE
SITE 2
The skyline of Jalan Trus is varied, as the public bank have the highest skyline along the street, while the old shop houses are the lowest among the site. So designing a moderate height that is slightly taller than the old shophouses to show create a rhythm. A translucent facade is used to be stand out from the building surrounding. Flat roof is use to look unity with the urban wall.

Because of the existing surrounding building provide enough shades all the time to the site, the facade of the building is design according to the spatial.
ENVIRONMENT STRATEGIES WIND ANALYSIS
As the site is highly exposed to the strong wind blow from North-West, the facade of the buildings is not completely enclose which it is design with green walls that plants climb on the steel bar. These left gap for the wind to come into the buildings and go out from the top level as there is also a gap left for ventilation.
The site is highly exposed to wind coming from North and North-West, while the wind coming from North-West is the strongest as it is the wind blown from the sea nearby.
SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPTS The location that affects the facade design of a building to be less considered about the over exposed to sunlight issues because of the surrounding tall buildings that gave enough shading to the site. But the facade opening and oor plan are considered, it is design to maximise the advantage of natural ventilation and natural lighting in the building. The translucent polycarbonate sheets is used as the facade of the building, this get to maximise the natural lighting into the buildings, so that light can be turn off all the time during day time. Besides, the openings of the facade allow the strong wind to blow into the buildings and create a good ventilation and air ow. Moreover, there are plants all in the building that produce oxygen and reduce heats. All this considerations become a cycle to reduce the usage of electricity for lighting and air conditioning, which can result to reducing the energy usage of the building.
