A letter from your President Hello fellow Key Clubbers, we have completed a great amount of work this month and I am more than satisfied to share what we have accomplished. One of the many service projects we did over Thanksgiving break involved writing “thank you letters for teachers along with creating Thanksgiving themed care packages. We look forward to our holiday meeting next month where we will have MANY opportunities to earn hours!

Yours in Service, Aarthi Annamalai

Get your sunglasses, suits, and dresses ready because the Hollywood red carpet is waiting for you! The Texas-Oklahoma District Board is proud to announce that the theme for LEDCON 2020 will be Hollywood. We are not only bringing you Hollywood, we are bringing you lights.. camera.. ACTION. The weekend of April 23rd-26th you will get the chance to celebrate a spectacular year of service, learn leadership skills, meet nearly 1,500 Key Clubbers, and much more.

Kindness to Action In an effort to spread kindness throughout Cy Woods, all of our reps and officers came prepared with various supplies such as markers and posters, and most importantly, with a friendly attitude! Over the course of various meetings, we decorated no-slip socks for the children recovering in nearby hospitals, wrote and distributed teacher appreciation cards, and created several posters encouraging kindness to hang throughout the school. With these projects we hope to create an inclusive and kind environment not only within our classrooms and hallways, but in our community and the world!

Key Clubber of the Month

Key Club has influenced my life in countless ways. It has helped me become more selfless and generous over these past two years. The biggest impact it has on me as a person is that Key Club makes me feel more grateful and blessed for the privilege I have today. Because of Key Club it has made me a better person and make me realize I should appreciate what I have and not take them for granted. Just spending time to help out the people in need gives me the biggest smile and such a heartwarming feeling. Whether it’s sending cards to a nursing home or simply helping someone out with directions, the feeling received can’t ever be compared to any other. Annie Lam

Spreading Halloween Cheer Erika Aguirre Key Clubbers painting posters to promote Key Club. When people think of the holidays, people usually think of Christmas and Thanksgiving. While these holidays might spark happiness, Halloween sets the tone to all the excitement that is yet to come. A few weeks ago, I volunteered at Family Night for Adams Elementary School, and it has been one of the greatest experiences of Key Club volunteer work that I have attended. First, we were directed to a wonderful playground where, along with other volunteers, my group set up a stand full of food. Once people started arriving, we were all filled with instant joy at seeing the children’s costumes. This volunteer experience reminded me of the joy of Halloween and dressing up along side your friends. To add to an already amazing night, I was reminded of why I joined Key Club in the first place. Being a part of such a privileged school, I am sometimes forgetful of how important it is to be thankful and give back to my community. During this family night, while I served hotdogs, not one person received them without saying thank you and flashing me a warm smile. In turn, this made me excited to serve and bring joy to people’s faces. In addition, I was reminded to give thanks to those who help me. This is exactly what Key Club is about. Its spreading happiness to others even through simple tasks. Many times, we overlook at how little things we do can bring immense excitement to others. Along with serving hotdogs, I was given the chance to monitor kids while they jumped on the inflatable playhouses. I was constantly laughing alongside them at how exhilarated they were, never losing energy even as they played for hours. This had me thinking about how good young kids have it, never having to worry about homework, grades, or college. Then, I was motivated to become as carefree as they were. They inspired me to bring the good out of hard situations, to always laugh, and to remember that life is the greatest gift we were given and that to waste it with any unhappiness would be unjust. Finally, this experience gave me the opportunity to meet other Key Club members from different schools. Key Club requires lots of hard work and commitment, therefore all of our members take school seriously and truly care about making a difference through volunteer work. With this family night, I met several other members from high schools near me, and we bonded over our love for community service. It was extremely beneficial to know that there are others who have regard for their futures as well. Knowing that I have a support system of friends from Key Club, I feel beyond blessed to be part of not only a club, but a family that will forever have my back and best interest at heart.

Safety First Uma Sivakumar

Various Key Clubbers help teach students about personal safety. I have enjoyed many of the service projects that I have participated in Key Club so far, but my favorite service project has been volunteering at Foundry UMC at the Cub Scout Event. In the event, there were various stations that helped kindergartners and first graders learn how they can be safe in different situations. I helped teach the kids about the six essentials you should take when you are going on a hike and guided kids along a small mini hike around the church. Other volunteers and cub scouts helped teach the kids about proper fire safety and they got to learn how to “stop, drop, and roll”. Volunteers also taught them how to use smoke detectors and handle other safety equipment. Children enjoyed separate stations with new arts and crafts, and some kids had the opportunity to launch a model rocket into the air. We were able to spend the entire morning and early afternoon participating in this exciting event. I particularly enjoyed this event because most of the little kids coming to the church were really interested in all of the activities there. They were having lots of fun while learning different things about how to be safe. Many of the kids were really active and attentive to each of the different posts. Parents and their children could come and leave whenever they wanted to during the event’s hours and all the stations were bustling all through since the kids were curious to be part of all the activities. Volunteers and scouts helped out at different stations making it convenient, organized, and enjoyable. While I was there, I had fun watching the kids launch the rockets and trying to catch them. The rockets streamed towards the sky, then drifted down in parachutes around the lot where all of the activities were taking place. At one point, a rocket even landed on the roof of the church, but eventually, the wind blew it back down to the ground. The sunny and cool weather made it a pleasure to be outside. Overall, the Cub Scouts event was a blast because the Cy-Woods Key Club, Cy-Ranch Key Club, and Cub Scouts were all helping out at the event together. I got to volunteer with some of my friends which always makes volunteering more amusing. The Cub Scout Event was really special because of all the smiles it put on the little kids’ faces. Everyone got to learn something there and I was especially happy to be a part of it.
