Hey 3N! As another month goes by, we keep growing and getting better as a group of leaders. Fall Rally is coming up soon, and be on the lookout for that flyer! The DCON theme will be revealed there, and it is an amazing opportunity to meet Key Clubbers from across Texas and Oklahoma! In our division, though, we have been doing amazing. Kiwanis members from across Houston have been commending the acts of Key Clubbers, and our hard work is being recognized. Personally, I wasn't as involved this month, and I'm very sorry for that. Our DCM/PCM got cancelled due to inclement weather, and that was really unfortunate. It's being rescheduled, and be on the lookout for the updated date! Thank you guys so much for continuing to serve, lead, and volunteer this summer. You all are doing amazing, but we can do even better! Take it upon yourself to do something that will CHANGE someone's life this month. It could be a single person or a group of people that need help, but make your service impactful to other people. LEAD THE CHARGE 3N! Yours in Service, Raj Patel, Lieutenant Governor

Our July Fundraisers In order to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospital Foundation, Key Clubbers from Cy-Woods, Cy-Ridge, and Cy-Falls teamed up. This July we held two separate fundraisers; one at Bahama Bucks and the other at Dairy Queen. We are so grateful to these two establishments for donating a set percentage of the money earned through the purchase of snow cones and ice cream to the Children's Hospitals. We hope to work with these establishments again in the near future to support those in need!

Our Key Clubber of the Month Key Club has been a big part of my life. It has impacted me in so many ways and has shaped me into who I am today. This previous year, I was president of Key Club and it opened a whole new world of learning and dedication that I never knew about. I learned so much about the workings of the club and how much effort and strength it takes to run the club as a whole. Key Club, specifically, has shaped me into an extremely selfless person. Through volunteering and service, I am able to broaden my horizons and view the world in a different light. Rather than sitting at home, I now strive to make a change in the world or just within the people around me. Being Key Clubber of the month is such an amazing honor to me, because this club has given me so much. I can’t even begin to imagine where I would be today if it weren’t for Key Club.

New Connections

Key Club members are seen conversing at the meeting as they are forming new connections with individuals they have not met before. -Dorina Balogh

As Tom Ford once said, “The most important things in life are the connections you make with others.” Throughout high school, Key Club has become a chance for me to serve others. Since it is such a large, international organization, it allows me to become connected with numerous communities and serve others in a positive way. Key Club has affected my everyday life by allowing me to meet new people and form connections that I never would have had if I wouldn’t have been exposed to them through Key Club. I was given the chance to climb out of my shell and meet new people through the simple act of volunteering. In my first year of Key Club, as a freshman, I volunteered at a fun run at Texas Children’s Hospital. I remember this event so clearly because it came close to my heart and affected me in such a positive way. The event was five hours long and I saw that nobody else from my school was signed up. I was concerned because I had never volunteered at an event before where I didn’t recognize anyone from my school. I didn’t know who I was going to talk to or work with for the large span of time. However, once we were assigned to our stations, I met six other Key Clubbers from different schools who introduced themselves and enthusiastically began working at the station and helping the children on the inflatables. I was so relieved because I was able to easily fit into this positive environment. In addition, these members were upperclassmen, and I could easily approach them with questions about the station or their own experiences with Key Club. During those five hours of my time and the following days, I felt very accomplished. I had the chance to volunteer at an event that benefits a hospital and could assist in handing out medals to those running the 5k, helping children down the inflatable and passing out waters. At the same time, I had the chance to meet new individuals that I still communicate with to this day because we formed such a tight connection. I soon realized how lucky I was to be a part of such a large organization that allows me to connect with a variety of individuals with the same goals as my own. I still remember this experience today. Through Key Club, we are offered many opportunities to volunteer in communities that place us out of our comfort zone and allow us to meet new people. Because of this event, I have become a more social and bubbly person, similar to the six members I met while serving. As a representative, I feel it is my everyday goal to pass on this positive attitude to the rest of the members and make them feel how rewarding volunteering can be!

A Caring Character

The Key Club motto is extremely simple: “Caring – Our Way of Life”. However, it has a profound meaning because it shows that a service-oriented mindset can be applied to every part of a Key Clubber’s life. This is because helping others causes people to acquire leadership skills and positive characteristics. For instance, by joining Key Club, I have become more collaborative, responsible, and proactive. I learned how to cooperate effectively by making posters for Wildcat Express, a showcase of all the student organizations at Cy Woods High School. It was essential for the Reps and Officers to work together by sharing ideas about which designs were more likely to encourage students to join Key Club. Another activity that taught me how to collaborate was the DCON Pet Rock Project. To finish the project before the deadline, I worked together with other students to build a paper mache rock, decorate it, and make a video about it. Overall, understanding how to cooperate leads to increased communication skills and allows Key Club members to reach success in life. Being a part of Key Club has helped me become more responsible because of the many duties that came with having a leadership position. These included writing monthly articles, which taught me to plan ahead to meet deadlines. Additionally, reps and officers were responsible for bringing food to meetings once a month, which was very rewarding because it meant helping other Key Club members. Increased responsibility is obviously critical as it allows students to get better at managing their time and to take advantage of opportunities. The third skill Key Club has taught me, being proactive, is likely the most important. It has allowed me to take action to serve my community. For example, I reached out to the organizers of a food, clothes, and toys drive in December to provide volunteers from my school’s Key Club. The event was very successful, and I was able to help place thousands of donated items into a truck. I also used a sign-in sheet to make it easier for other Key Clubbers’ to participate. Being proactive also gave me the opportunity to do a better job at events because I communicated with supervisors to find out what they needed help with. Clearly, being more driven allows Key Club members such as myself to have a beneficial impact on others. The effect Key Club can have on students’ everyday lives should never be underestimated because volunteering teaches skills that can positively change their lives. Therefore, caring about others is not only an abstract idea, it is an essential value for Key Club members all around the world.
