ACADEMIC

PERMEABLE AND POROUS ARCHITECTURE IN THE URBAN FABRIC OF CENTRAL BOGOTA The intervention seeks to expand and intensify the new and unstable pedestrian character of a prominent street (Carrera Septima). By identifying resources in the neighbourhood near the street such as voids in the form of makeshift parking place s, expansions of human activities can be intensified, multiplied and expanded upon. Collaboration: Field research with James Tanner.

Studio team: prof. dr. ir. Tom Avermaete dr. ir. Klaske Havik ir. Jorge Mejia Hernandez

REVIVING THE COMMERCIAL METABOLISM OF CONEY ISLAND Coney Island has been in a constant economic decline through various circ umstances from floodings to economic crisises. The inhabitants most of them go north to either Brooklyn or farther for either leisure or work. This project seeks to provide a internal metabolism in Coney Island, encouraging vibrant life to return once more to this former popular area. Collaboration: Field research and design with Wei Huang and Yuan Chen. Studio team: ir. Hans Teerds Leeke Reinders

First impression sketch round The start of the field research consisted of map drawing the observed area and what the initial impression was. 23

Brighton beach Avenue // Vibrant commercial street The research narrowed down to two streets to public life. Brighton Beach Avenue to the east and W 29th street to the west. 24

W 29th street // semi- appropiated street In order to compare the emphasis is put on people, street furniture and activity. 25

NIEUW CROOSWIJK RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX: PRIVATE-PUBLIC INTERSPACE The residential complex seeks to invigorate the residential area in(Nieuw) Crooswijk. Rather questioning how the inhabitants are going to live in their houses, the question lies how to design intercommunication between neighbors. The inbetween space is created to be ambigious and neither explicit private or public making appropiation exc iting.

05. CONCLUSION

Design conception The design is based on adding and subtracting volumes in order to create interspace accordingly to different floor levels. 34

COMMUNITY

3 layers of publicness The design’s concept revolves around the notion of privacy increases with the height in 3 stages. 36

Dwelling types The dwelling types corresponds with degrees of privacy. The quality of the dwelling a nd the space inbetween which defines the living environment. 37

Degrees of privacy The degrees of privacy in a building complex is defined by the immediate outside space and the relations towards the environment. 41

HOUSE OF THE FUTURE: BUNCH IN THE WOODS Bunch in the woods is a design revolving around the prediction of the future 50 years from now. The believe that dense urban fabric and the suburban environment will contrast eachother perpetually throughout time to extreme states. The dwelling design envisions a way to mediate both states by proposing a concept by nature and create a dense neighborhood. Collaboration: Research and design with Justin Kane. WOODS

INTERVENTION APPROACH

C O N V E N T I O N A L O C C U PAT I O N

Intervention uses the morphology of the surroundings.

Conventional way of building and occupying land.

MANMADE SCAPE

N AT U R A L S C A P E

The morphological difference creates an unsuitable state for nature.

The density of the buildings don’t really matter because there is no morphological difference.

Conventionalism vs. Design approach This diagram illustrates the need to think differently and go back to the basic morphology of designing when considering the environment. 46

Forest morphology A forest can be divided into 3 experiences, from lowest to highest: stems, branches and treetops. The design will emphasize on these values. 47

Design Bunch in the woods is a dwelling complex of 3 dwellings around a courtyard. The inhabitants access the courtyard between the dwellings. 48

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

BIJENKORF DEPARTMENT STORE: AMSTERDAM, DAMRAK The renovation of the ground floor of the Bijenkorf department store was a much needed renewal where the overall material and quality of space has been redesigned. Furthermore, the project involved not only the department store itself but also major high-fashion brands it facilitated in order to bring the customers the most enjoyable shopping experience. Collaboration: Supported the Bijenkorf Design team lead by Floor v/d Oord. Overall tasks were creating guideline booklets for premium brands and 3d modeling.

Freelance: realized project.

The building and the furniture The building has been renovated alongside with the new arsenal of furniture of brands. 3D modeling the furniture for future references was necessary. 58

Guidelines By creating guidelines in the 3d model for the brands, the quality of both building and brands can be brought out without conflicts. 59

POP-UP FACTORY: CHILDREN DAYCARE CENTER The daycare center is an abandoned shed transfo rmed into a c hildren daycare centre. The design makes use of morphology related to nature, taking note of trees, mountains and other element s. The children playing in the centre would be stimulated to play and retain an explorative attitude of the building.

Collaboration: Research and design with Skander Saadi

COMMUNAL SPACE FOR STUDENT HOUSING A housing agent asked in a design competition to renovate the communal space for a student house complex. Our interpreration for the the communal space was to create an instrument that lets the building become an icon to outsiders and yet feel pleasant inside. The instruments we chose were illumination and repeating hexagons. Collaboration: Research and design with Jasper de Wert.

Design competition: Finalist

Communal space The design comes in two parts: the introduced light fixtures that leads the people to their quarters and communal space and the communal space itself. 70

71

Entrance hall Our biggest overhaul was the entrance hallway where the quality of atmosphere of lounge and serenity would start from the entrance to home. 72

HOLY ARCHITECTURE IN SENEGAL: THE WATER MIRAGE The water mirage temple is a holy architecture making use of water and light in the middle. The combination of the two together creates a pool of mysticism and allows the people to reflect, find strenght and communicate.

Collaboration: Research and design with Jasper de Wert and Yasser Hassan.

Design competition: Kaira Looro Finalist
