ECO? Czech Design Toward Sustainability? Sustainability and environmentally responsible lifestyle are resonating more and more globally. Almost no reasonable authority disputes the fact that it is essential to start behaving in an environmentally friendly way. Yet, particularly in the Czech Republic, the involvement of design in solving environmental problems is only just starting to gain prominence, and there are not many companies or individuals involved in the issue on a long-term basis. However, it is design and its possibilities that can provide the ideal starting platform for setting up new consumption habits. A well-thought-out product morphology, cleverly chosen materials and a conscious approach to production (including the incorporation of new technologies) are essential attributes that can help set up new rules. Unfortunately, companies often exploit ecology and sustainability, particularly in their marketing strategies, and they use greenwashing, too. How can we distinguish between the companies’ pure intentions and their awareness of the need for change, and those that are just cleverly making use of what is currently in fashion? Hardly. The Czech Centres’ exhibition does not aim to vet companies and designers – in fact, a consistently critical look might narrow down our selection even more. By providing examples of individual solutions and ideas, the project strives to prove that even seemingly partial realizations can represent a major breakthrough in production and design in the future. For this reason, we were looking for Czech companies as well as individuals whose specific ideas show how skilfully design can be used to create new consumption habits. In this context, we do not see design as an aesthetic effect in itself, but rather as a purely functional tool that offers a combination of practical and visually perfect qualities. ECO-logical Evaluation of ECO-design We have chosen three pillars of sustainability to assess the level of eco-design of our exhibition products: environmental, economic and social. As we consider design to be a creative component of human culture, we decided to emphasize the artistic role of design by expanding the assessment to include a fourth pillar – cultural contribution. We have used stars to measure the contribution of the products in each of the four pillars. The contribution of products to economic, social, and cultural sustainability was assesed based on questionnaires. The contribution to eco-design was evaluated using criteria chosen with regard to the forthcoming EU environmental taxonomy: • • • • •

But how exactly do you assign stars to products that are different in nature, perform different consumer functions and are not even the same size? Since virtually all of the products in the exhibition consumed some amount of electricity during their life cycle, we decided to use the environmental burden of electricity generation as our benchmark. One average kWh produced in the European Union has a comprehensive environmental impact and affects all the environmental criteria we have chosen. We used the LCA method to determine the environmental burden of 0.1 kWh of average European electricity, as well as 1 kWh, 10 kWh, 100 kWh and 1000 kWh. The product that showed a lower environmental burden than the production of 0.1 kWh of electricity in the measured criterion was awarded 5 stars. TEXTILE MOUNTAIN The Czech lands have been among the leading textile producers for centuries. The golden days are gone, but even today many factories still operate here and produce a large number of fabrics that do not always find a use. These are the ones that Lenka Vackova’s Textile Mountain project focuses on. She buys surplus yardage from manufacturers and designers and offers it for reuse. Without her activity, this material would not have found a use and would probably have been burned or degraded by the producers.
