ABOUT THE DIRECTORS

Tomas Merta Tomas Klein and Tomas Merta create an ego/alter ego couple, under the brand GURU FILM. The genre of their films reminds more of states of mind than of stories. What was your motivation to shoot this film? In the beginning we came across a short story by Ondrej Stindl that appealed to us, as he focuses on a state of mind more than on a plot. The dog, one of the lead characters, is not only a lovable or obedient servant of a man, it is also his spiritual guide, a deeper symbol of the nature our main character had lost long ago. The master is stuck in his small traumas and the dog is waiting for the right moment to show him how a real man should behave. How do you value this success?

MIDPOINT Central European Script Center

It is a great encouragement for our future work. We see that it is worthy to follow your opinion and be courageous both in form and in the content. Although not everybody will digest the film easily.

AFERIM! RADU JUDE RO, BG, CZ 2015 | 108 MIN | DCP | DRAMA Silver Bear for Best Director

In 19th century Romania, Costandin (50), a policeman of the time, and his son Ionita (15) travel through the south of the country in search of a fugitive Gypsy slave. Costandin is a charismatic mixture between a funny Stalin and a somewhat more pragmatic Don Quixote. While Ionita seems to be quite the opposite: more like Dostoyevsky’s Idiot, finding himself in the unfortunate situation of having to settle his inner turmoil while riding, holding a sword or a gun. Their road speedily winds through exotic landscapes and meeting hundreds of secondary characters renders a surprise in every scene. All of this is pictured with infectious humor and stirring cynicism, while keeping the authenticity of the age, in an ingenious Western in a wild-wild East never yet captured on film.

IL BOEMO IN DEVELOPMENT written and directed by Petr Vaclav length: 120 min budget: EUR 5 million locations: Italy (Venice, Naples), Czech Republic, Germany (Munich) production: winter 2016 – spring 2017

Il Boemo tells the life story of Josef Myslivecek, a composer who sacrificed everything to be free, loved and famous and yet he died alone, sick and forgotten. Josef Myslivecek rejected his comfortable bourgeois destiny as the eldest son of a Prague master miller to pursue his dream of becoming a composer in Italy. It is a tale of ambition, identity and love. While Josef has no qualms about exploiting the passions his music arouses in women to advance his career, he finds the one woman he truly loves is beyond his grasp. In the late 18th century, “Il Boemo” as he came to be known, was one of the most popular and prolific composers of Italian opera seria. He was also a friend and mentor of young Mozart. Myslivecek’s life speaks to us because it is the story of an immigrant who leaves his obscure provincial birthplace to seek his fortune in what at the time was the most fashionable country in his field. If the change of climate is highly stimulating, the immigrant’s survival is by no means assured. The land in which he arrives with neither friends nor protectors is already bursting with talented rivals and controlled by people in established positions. Our protagonist has a greater chance of failure than success. Josef’s fate tells how a career can be made. And how, like love, it can just as easily be lost… If he is famed in the Czech Republic for having “conquered Italy” and being “the friend of Mozart”, the name of Josef Myslivecek is familiar in Italy and the opera world to only a few specialists and hardly known at all anywhere else. He would probably have been forgotten entirely if he was not mentioned with admiration by Mozart in his letters. It is in this correspondence that the only physical description of him may be found. Otherwise, all that remains of Myslivecek are a few of his letters, some legal documents, critics’ notices and public announcements. And his music.

Spotlight on the Czech Republic Saturday, 16 May

Kristina Hejdukova SIRENA FILM Kristina Hejdukova, a graduate of FAMU in Prague is a co-founder of Sirena Film, a Prague based production company specializing in films, TV projects, commercials, music videos and photography. Sirena film produces both its own and co-production projects, putting strong emphasis on creative skill, integrity and excellence. The company has regularly cooperated at international co-productions, especially Scandinavian projects, such as A Royal Affair, The Shamer’S Daughter, 1864 or US film Serena by Oscar awarded director of Danish origin, Susanne Bier.

Kristina co-produced the acclaimed historical epos of Nikolaj Arcel A Royal Affair, winner of 2 Silver Bears at Berlinale 2012 and Oscar nomination (for Best Foreign Language Film). This Danish-Swedish-Czech co-production, received both types of funding available for co-productions in the Czech Republic – tax incentives program and minority co-production support.

What role you think did the launch of the tax incentive support program in the Czech Republic in 2010 combined with already existing minority co-production support play in winning in the international competition and becoming a part of this exclusive project? Thanks to the tax incentives program and the minority grant we could offer our partners an interesting part of the financing, which could bring around 10-15% of the total production budget to the table. Combined with competitive prices, which lower the production costs, we can find a local solution for 25 – 35 % of the total costs. The Czech Republic has been a traditional place for filmmakers from all around the globe for decades and its reputation is solid and trustworthy…and that counts as well, sometimes more than money. You work a lot with Scandinavia. In 2014, you co-produced Serena by Susanne Bier, Oscar nominated director of Danish origin. Denmark is, similarly to the Czech Republic, a small country with a language spoken by a small community. But – it has a great film reputation. Do you think we could get a recipe from Denmark? We could learn a lot from Scandinavia…. the system of

generous state supporting of film schools and film industry, as everything starts with a good education…the open-minded approach to stories, as there are good stories everywhere…the self-confident yet humble approach to work…. the passion and eye for great talents… What was your first love in film? My first love was Thomas Winterberg’s film Festen in 1998... It took some time and a couple of bottles of wine to digest the film…but it is still one of my favorites... it proves that a great idea does not necessarily need a great budget... and I still have goose bumps when I think about it today. What is your “dream” project? I would love to work with Susanne Bier again, as she is a fantastic person, one of the greatest talents and a very strong and inspiring woman… Another dream is to work on a film like Love Actually, as it gives off a feeling that it was a great shoot…and I love the script, for me it is a scriptwriting masterpiece. Where do you see yourself as a producer in five years? On the set, the first day of shooting of my dream project…starring Ryan Gossling and Sean Penn!

A co-production between Romania, Bulgaria and Czech Republic is rather rare. How did you enter the project? And how was the co-operation? There were several reasons for entering the Aferim! project: the experienced producers on board Ada Solomon and Rossitsa Valkanova, the topic, the script, Radu Jude’s daring vision. The co-operation was superb – precise, fast, personally enriching.

You also co-produce the project Out by György Kristof, a part of this year’s Cinéfondation L’Atelier. Is it a certain director, a topic or something else that makes you believe in a project? It is the personality and the talent of the director. It is the idea of the project. The range of the projects I do is quite wide. The quality of the film according to my own taste is the key. I like to learn from the project – to do something different than before.

You have produced Olmo Omerzu’s graduation film A Night Too Young presented in Forum at Berlinale 2012. Your recent project with Olmo Family Film is in post-production right now. It is a multiple co-production between Czech Republic, Germany, Slovenia, France and Slovakia. How did this big project start? We have developed the project together with Olmo since the very first idea. Olmo’s previous work was the main reason for the

partners to come on board and I am happy for that. There is a specific role in the project for every co-producer and it all works together very well.

You regularly produce both fiction films and documentaries. Last fall, the documentary you’ve produced Always Together by Eva Tomanova premiered at IDFA 2014. Was it always your intention to go in for both genres? There is no rule. I like to operate in both fields and often I also produce films on the border of documentary and fiction (Koza, Made In Ash). Perhaps the different aspects of documentary and fiction help me to retain my own balance.

Your docureality Trabant Vs. South America by Dan Priban has attracted more than 25.000 viewers in Czech cinemas in 2014, which is a huge success. A project of two new "trabant" films that will take place in Australia and Asia, brought a great experience with new financing opportunities – it gained more than 100.000 EUR by crowd-funding. Can you comment on this? Together with Dan Priban we want to make a high-standard films in the “travel” genre. There is a combination of a film for cinema and TV series, so we hit all platforms. It’s provoking and funny. Dan is very active on social media and he also tours Czech and Slovak Republic with his live programme. He has big and active fan base. However, the crowd-funding response was surprisingly huge.

What is your “dream” project? A contemporary love story.

PRODUCERS NETWORK You co-produced two very successful films last year. Corn Island was awarded Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2014 and shortlisted for Oscar nominations in 2015. Karla Stojakova AXMAN PRODUCTION Karla Stojakova graduated from the production department of FAMU in Prague. In 2000 she co-founded the independent film production company Axman Production and in 2005 she founded FILMASIA – film festival on Asian cinema in Prague. Axman Production concentrates on independent fiction and documentary films and is often involved in award winning international co-productions from all around the world. Axman is also a service production company with the main focus on projects from South Korea filmed in the Czech Republic.

I always meet wonderful people – filmmakers from all around the world at the major film festivals. I make some friends that stay for years and we cooperate on projects we feel great passion for. We read scripts and we look into films that the directors made before and when it all clicks we know we want to be part of it. With Corn Island it was similar. I first met the director through our common friend and afterwards I saw his previous films that were wonderful! All that contributed to the idea to make this special minority coproduction with Georgia and thanks to our Czech Film fund it became possible and we could be involved in this very unique film! Thanks to Karel Och (artistic director of KVIFF) who selected the film and believed in it, we finally won Karlovy Vary IFF and from there an amazing journey started and is still going on… With LIF – there is a long friendship with Icelandic producer Ingvar Thordarson (we actually met at Producers on the Move) and we have already cooperated on several projects. I love Nordic cinema, I was involved with Scandinavian films since my studies at FAMU.

I regularly come to my favorite Busan IFF that has become number one festival in Asia! In Korea I have wonderful friends I want to come back to see – they say I must have been Korean in my past life. I truly admire Korean cinema, to mention another film we line produced in the Czech Republic – amazing film Ode to My Father by director JK Yoon that is currently the second most successful film (box office) in the history of Korean cinema. So by all this I can say I am really honored I can be involved with Korean films for more then 15 years now.

Life in a Fishbowl was your second co-operation with Icelandic director. In 2006, you produced a short film Slavek the Shit directed by Grimur Hákonarson, that was selected for Cinéfondation. Are you still in touch? Yes we are in touch and I have already sent my wishes to Grimur when I found out his film Rams was selected for Un Certain Regard this year! Grimur is very talented filmmaker and I was really looking forward to see his feature films after Slavek the Shit we made together in Prague, still during our studies at FAMU.

You have worked several times with Bohdan Slama, a renowned Czech director, whose films has been selected for Venice Days, San Sebastian IFF or lately for Sundance. Do you currently prepare his new project? Currently, I am preparing a new feature film of Bohdan Slama, with the working title Icy Mother. Its main character is a 65 years old woman, who, after the death of her husband, tries to cope with her new role in life. At the moment, we are finalizing the work on the script and start with the financing of the project. The shooting should start in the beginning of 2016, the release is planned for the fall. Two of your films have won the awards of the European Film Academy – the documentary Rene by Helena Trestikova in 2009 and the animated feature Alois Nebel by Tomas Lunak in 2012. In Alois Nebel, based on a comics trilogy, the unique technology of rotoscoping was used, combining feature and animation techniques. Can you comment on it? For Alois Nebel, being an adaptation of comics, we were looking for a technology, which would avail us to preserve the artistic style of the comics and to work with actors at the same time. Rotoscoping links animation with acting and when we tested it during the preparation phase in a pilot scene, we knew it was the right choice. We were shooting at locations as well as in a studio. Animation took us almost 2 years, it was not easy but the result was, in my opinion, worthy the effort.

Why Not Productions, the production company we have collaborated with in the past on films by Bohdan Slama, offered us to co-operate on the film which partly took place in Prague. Apart from line production, we also helped the producers with the casting of Milos Forman to one of the lead roles. You have been active in film production for 20 years now. Apart from being a producer, you are also one of the founders of the Czech Audiovisual Producers’ Association (APA) and have been involved in cinema policy in the Czech Republic. In your opinion, what is the weakest point on the Czech production scene? What do we need the most? Of course, it all starts with financing and although the situation improves gradually, the sources for financing of filmmaking in the Czech Republic are in comparison with Western Europe still on lower level. Especially the field of development and script editing – which are in my opinion the weakest spots of Czech films – deserve bigger support. What is your “dream” project? I don’t have any “dream” project, but we are currently preparing several films, I look forward to produce. One of them is an adaptation of the biography of the famous photographer Frantisek Drtikol – A History of Light.

What was your first love in film? My film development was hugely influenced by Australia, where I studied and lived for seven years. I was strongly impressed in particular by such directors as Peter Weir and Buz Luhrmann. During your time at Barrandov Studios, you had a chance to meet outstanding international

filmmakers and producers working there. Is any of them very special for you? Every project is unique and personally enriching experience and I do not think that it is necessary to mention any specific names. What I appreciate is sharing of thoughts, international experience and various points of view that your partners bring to the local film industry and which show you (or can show – if you are listening) how to make things better every next time. What was the co-operation on Korean blockbuster Snowpiercer by Bong Joon-ho like? Snowpiercer was precisely one of these projects that can teach you so much on every step of its creation. Barrandov Studios hosted the production in several soundstages, they used costumes and props department’s services but probably the most important “input” from our side was the construction of large and amazing sets of the futuristic train where the story took place.

and co-production. Casino Royale, Chronicles of Narnia, Oliver Twist and other projects were filmed at Barrandov Studios’ fourteen soundstages. We recently worked on feature films Snowpiercer, Child 44, Unlocked or television series Borgia, The Musketeers, Crossing Lines and many more.

FUNDING in the Czech Republic

There are two possible forms of state support relating to international productions in the Czech Republic. Both are granted by the State Cinematography Fund: TAX INCENTIVES in the form of tax rebate – an automatic support for all applying qualifying projects - and selective support for MINORITY CO-PRODUCTIONS.
