This film highlights our fascination for the circus environment, both in terms of its socio-architectural aspects, and the nostalgia and emotions we have always associated with it. The film makes intriguing use of the various ways to modify temporal linearity, the narrative structures of verbal expression, and the lexicon applied to visual phenomena. The world is moving ever so fast and humans are claiming more and more space without necessarily considering the consequences. “Pandas” is caught in the middle of a game where concepts of commercialism and pure voyeuristic entertainment are put side by side with notions of animal preservation. Yet, the very same “saviors” are tampering with natural selection processes and altering the mind of the panda, thus creating a hierarchy in terms of the value of life. Panda is at this point existing at the mercy of man but all of a sudden his compromising existence is altered by events beyond his control. From that point on, a new chapter starts in the incessant struggle between man and the rest of nature.

This grand lyrico-epic narrative takes place just after WWII in a small Moravian town where the inhabitants live in friendly solidarity. But, after the communist takeover of February 1948, they are one by one pulled into the meshes of history and no one is left unscathed. Director Jasný’s deep empathy for the lives of his numerous protagonists, as well as Jaroslav Kučera’s emotive and painterly camerawork, render this a rare gem of a film.

Lips Tullian / Vít Karas An adventure film about a poor squire, Filip, who’s beloved Hedvika is forced by her father into marrying the wicked Vice-regent, Martinic. Deep in the woods, he forms a band of outlaws and, under his new name LIPS TULLIAN, Captain of the Black Company, he vows revenge on evil noblemen Martinic. Lips Tullian is an adaptation of the legendary comics by Jaroslav Weigel and Kája Saudek. Escape from Somalia / David Čálek The film reveals the plight of Somali pirates, mostly former fishermen, who as a result of the global fishing industry can no longer make a living from the sea as they once did and have to join up with pirate cartels in order to feed themselves and their families. We follow former pirate Ali Muhammad Warsame, who once spent endless days and weeks at sea, taking drugs not to die of hunger and exhaustion. Clownwise / Viktor Tauš Oskar, Max and Viktor, once a superstar clown trio, which split up over a never forgiven, heart-rending fight, are now paying the price of 40 years of separate grueling lives on and off the stage. Their irresistible sense of humor is challenged by fear of death, cancer, family dysfunction and other joys of old age. They’re about to risk everything to find out if there’s one more show left in them, a re-staging of the famous clownery that launched the group’s career. A poignant comedy that proves it’s literary impossible to be scared if one can laugh.
Project Lips Tullian / Vít Karas Escape from Somalia / David Čálek Clownwise / Viktor Tauš Cyril and Methodius – Apostles to the Slavs / Petr Nikolaev Lost in Munich / Petr Zelenka Family Film / Olmo Omerzu Slate of Projects (The Caravan – Hangman Jr., Biofilm, The Eleven) 9 Cyril and Methodius – Apostles to the Slavs / Petr Nikolaev Cyril and Methodius were two Byzantine Greek brothers born in the 9th century. They became missionaries of Christianity. They influenced the cultural development of all Slavs and received the title “Apostles to the Slavs”. It will be a cinema docu-drama, which will map their lives. Lost in Munich / Petr Zelenka A ninety-year old grey parrot, once the property of Edouard Daladier, the French Prime Minister who signed the Munich Pact in 1938, now the pet of a French actress, finds itself at a press conference in Prague’s French Institute. During the press conference, the parrot upstages things by repeating phrases he’d learned in those days, including nice comments about Hitler and nasty words regarding Czechs. In dramatic fashion, Czech journalist Pavel abducts the parrot, setting off an unwanted international scandal. But that’s only half the story... Family Film / Olmo Omerzu Family Film breaks the family down into prime factors. Husband and wife set sail on the ocean, leaving their two children at home to explore the freedom offered them by the absence of parental supervision. But fear clouds the kids’ seemingly carefree life after they lose contact with their parents: their boat capsizes and the father’s beloved dog is lost. The timing of the parents’ return corresponds to a tragedy at home. Their son lies in the hospital in need of a kidney transplant. As the crisis climaxes, we leave the family for a desert island where the dog struggles for survival – and not only his own.

Romi, a prostitute, is anything but successful at her job: she is of far too gentle a nature for her clients. The more obstinately she is pushed to the streets by her pimp Franz, the closer she is to a complete breakdown. One day Romi is addressed by a property speculator referring to himself as a “wealthy Jew.” He does not demand any sexual services of her. He satisfies himself with Romi telling him stories, for which he lavishly rewards her. However, no one shares the sudden happiness with Romi. Her work-mates and current clients turn their backs on her, as does Franz, with whom Romi is in love. This Czech documentary presents a visit to the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (a.k.a. Trans-Dniestr) as a trip to a museum of communist totalitarianism. The country, whose independence has been recognized by only a few other states, remains an isolated multi-ethnic enclave held together by an authoritarian regime. In a country where you are only allowed to film out the window of a train, the locals are afraid of being denounced but are glad to live in a comfortable refuge from the hectic modern world, and songs on television celebrate the president.

Set in Prague of 1950s, the film follows Hakl, a member of the Communist police force, and his investigation of a seemingly mundane robbery at a goldsmith’s shop. His desire for the truth, though, leads him to new evidence indicating that the case is far more complicated than it seems. State Security takes over the investigation, replacing him with a German specialist in Zionist crime, Zenke, whose ominous arrival feels like more than a mere coincindence. Hakl defiantly continues his investigation on his own, sending both men on a collision course with governmental powers beyond anything they could have suspected.
