February’s Service Spotlight

Children’s Miracle Network Focus: The CNH Service Projects Committee created the Spotlight on Service in order to help educate members about Key Club International and California-Nevada-Hawaii’s service initiatives to encourage active participation. This month’s highlight values the significance of children’s miracle network to emphasize awareness and raise funds to support millions of treatments for children. All contributions will go towards treatments, research and more. Any questions or concerns, you are welcomed to email: cnhkc.sp@gmail.com.

There are many way to show your support to the program. One way is card-making! You can be creative as you like and be sure to deliver them to the children in person! They will definitely be happy to see your gratitude.

If you love art then this would be the perfect event for you! Organize a service event or school project to raise awareness for Children’s Miracle Network by painting elaborate murals or simply adding a handprint. There are many things you can do, so just be creative!

One type of fundraiser is selling flowers with a card during the holidays. Special occasions like Valentine’s Day, Patrick’s Day, and many others would be perfect for CMN.

Instead of walking, you can skate instead. Collaborate with local skating rinks to host a nonprofit fundraiser. Find sponsors or individual pledges for each hour or lap the participants complete. This could also work with ice skating too.

This Month, Alameda had a sudden extra burst of joy due to the holidays. Using this holiday spirit, we had an ornament making event. After, we decided to spread this joy by selling the hand decorated ornaments and helping out at the salvation army luncheon. Although it was the holidays, we continued our normal activities of helping out at Uhuru pies, Axis dance company and Crab Cove. We also had a blast at the Dunsmuir Mansion with our fellow kiwis! We will continue to help out others while having fun!

Club Reports

This past month was certainly eventful for Albany Key Club. We had great attendance at our service events, helping at gift wrapping stations and even a Noon Year celebration (a kid friendly alternative to your average new year's night party)! We're also really glad a ton of people attended the DCM this month, as it was their first time!

17

For the month of December, our club only had two events: the Montclair Holiday Stroll and the December DWS. For the Montclair Holiday Stroll, we helped out after school and stayed for all of the festivities. In addition, we had members attend every weekend that the DWS took place, and we were able to help in the mansion and gift shop. It was fun squeezing in some service right before the holidays!

In the month of December, Arroyo had a total of seven events. We helped out at San Leandro's annual holiday event It's a Wonderful Night. Since it was the holidays, we volunteered to decorate Susan Reisz's house. At another volunteering event, Holiday Activities at the Museum, our volunteers helped young children with arts and crafts. This month we had 2 events at Stop Hunger Now. The volunteers packaged meals and helped tidy the warehouse. Arroyo had an event with our sister club, Piedmont, at Davis Street Bike Distribution where the volunteers distributed bikes in the pouring rain. Lastly, we had a successful InterKey Event. The volunteers enjoyed some hot chocolate as they made cards for the holidays.

18

This past month we had 5 service events. We had the Prisoner's Literature Project, the December DCM at Dunsmuir House, and the annual Holiday Meal at BHS-which lasted for two days. Lastly, we had a bake sale on Fourth Street, where we raised $175.

December was definitely one of the slower months for Castro Valley due to the short school time and busy holiday season. Members from Castro Valley attended all the December"s DWS at the Dunsmuir Estate. We also hosted our annual Secret Kiwi right before winter break and our Winter Social to end off winter break!

19

This month has been busy and we didn't get to have a lot of service events because of the Holidays, but hopefully we will pick back up in the next year (but probably after the coming finals). This month we only had the December DWS at the Dunsmuir Mansion and all 4 board members attended. We had 2 board members that went to the December DCM.

This month Encinal started off holiday volunteering with bell ringing at Salvation Army, followed by baking some pies for Uhuru, and finally, to top it all off, a Potluck meeting to celebrate the end of the year and to welcome the incoming year. And of course, we attended the DCM and our monthly local community service with Food Bank. Initially, we planned to make inspirational posters for finals week, but due to weather it got postpone, but anticipate it in the upcoming month. Our club looks forward to more service, more participation, and more spirit in 2017!

Submit your articles and submissions to Kathy Yan of d02.cnhkc.dne@gmail.com to make sure your club gets recognized for all the hard work you have accomplished

We have done campus cleanup which involves sweeping, mopping, taking out the trash, putting up posters, basically helping teachers on a Saturday clean up their classroom. And that's about it for the month.

21

This December, Oakland Tech Key Club volunteers helped to put up decorations and set up tables for Oakland Tech's Winter Ball on the 14th, 15th, 16th. On December 17th, the club hosted the Division Council Meeting (DCM) at Studio One Art Center. Key Clubbers from across the Bay Area got into the holiday spirit by competing to build the best gingerbread houses. On the 19th, volunteers helped paint the Chung Ngai Dance Troupe's new studio. Finally, Oakland Tech volunteers also traveled to the Dunsmuir Hellmann Historic Estate on six weekends throughout the month (3rd-4th, 10th-11th, 17th-18th), to assist with their holiday celebrations.

This month Piedmont Key Club members clean and repainted a local cafe. We also helped out our school's annual college and career center night.

22

This month, our club participated in a variety of service events dedicated towards the holiday season, such as a holiday basket drive, a holiday tea party and the December DCM. We are starting to get back on track with more fundraisers and recently planned for one at The Habit. As a club bonding, we merged our freshman campus members with the upperclassmen together for a joint meeting for a white elephant celebration.

In December, San Lorenzo volunteered at Stop Hunger twice. The second time was a volunteer drop in day so there were a lot of people helping. Our club also volunteered at Arbor day on our school campus, where we helped plant plants and do other things in our native garden.

23

The month of December has been a slow month for Skyline Key Club. We only had one service this month, yet many members attended. At the East Bay Agency for Children, we helped restored the playground that was infested with weeds. For the upcoming month of January, we are hoping to begin elections for the new board.

Meet your Division News Editor, What is your favorite Key Club Memory? My favorite Key Club memory was the annual Chili Cook Off hosted by Alameda Kiwanis during my freshman year. It was really fun and the chili was amazingly good.

How did you join Key Club? I first learned about Key Club in middle school through my brother. Hearing about his activities, I thought Key Club was pretty cool and decided to join in high school.

What is one unique fact about yourself that people wouldn't know unless they're told. My whole family has brown eyes while I’m the odd one with hazel eyes.

Kathy Yan

DNE’s Closing Message Hello Kiwis! A month has gone by already! Finals are over which means more time for Key Club and sleep! To all my seniors again, we’re now officially in second semester. There are more opportunities for us to relax without the stress of college applications and testing. However, please do not start getting lazy! Let’s end the term strong and cry together at DCON. Wow! Conclave was certainly great with all three candidates working their very best to become the next LTG for Division 2. I have to say, the candidates did extremely well that if I was delegate, I would have a hard time selecting the candidate. Major props to Aaron Nguyen and Tien Le for running! I know you both will be great leaders everywhere you go, position or no position. Nonetheless, congratulations to Angela Wong in becoming Division 2 LTG-Elect. I know you will do great things in the future. Speaking of Conclave, I hope everyone is starting their officer elections soon for the next term. I wish you all luck on your speeches and caucuses. But most importantly, be sure to practice and have fun. It’s not about the position, but about the service you serve to the community. Position or not, you will still accomplish great things. That’s enough of my message. Stay dry and see you in the next issue of Kiwi Chronicles. Thanks for reading, tweet tweet. At Your Service, Kathy Yan Division News Editor 2016-2017
