Service Spotlight

Kiwanis Family Focus: The CNH Service Projects Committee created the Spotlight on Service in order to help educate members about Key Club International and California-Nevada-Hawaii’s service initiatives to encourage active participation. This month’s highlight values the importance of Kiwanis Family as they support us mentally and physically as a club. Without their time and dedication, we as a club and community would be limited to many of our activities. Any questions or concerns, you are welcomed to email: cnhkc.sp@gmail.com.

Kiwanis Celebration Dinner Plan a dinner to celebrate everything you’ve done together as a K-Family! Together, you all can sponsor food or prepare food while others set-up and decorate the place for the festive mood.

Thank You Cards Nothing beats appreciation! Thank your K-Family for all their contributions for whatever they have done for you either chaperoning or supporting one of your events with a simple card filled with notes of gratitude!

Kiwanis Appreciation Day Key Club week is coming soon and what’s more to honor our organization then to thank our wonderful Kiwanis for all their hard work and support. Shower them with mini gifts and messages to show how much they mean to you.

Kiwanis Takeover

Experience what it is like host a Kiwanis meeting! Ask your Kiwanis Club to allow your club to come and takeover one of their meetings. You have the chance to set the rules and agenda for that meeting. This will be a good chance for you to bond with your fellow Kiwanis!

-My favorite part of Key Club is going to different events to help and meeting new people. -My favorite memory in Key Club was DCM in September because it was my first key club event and it was really fun. I met a lot of new people and some of them are funny and nice. -My closest friend in key club is a Spirit Coordinator. She is hard working and she also cares a lot about the environment and always tries to help in every way she can. She is just a great person to be around.

Ayize James -My favorite aspect is helping the community as a group and having fun while doing it. -I liked the color war DCM. I got very colorful! -I met Annette from Division 26S through my friends. She's super cool and fun!

-My favorite aspect of Key Club is being able to help my community while also creating friendships along the way. Another aspect I admire about key club is that it's more then just service. The club also constantly finds ways to raise money and awareness towards PTP. -My favorite Key Club memory is the first Key Club event I went to back in freshmen year when we had to serve food to the elderly who were disabled and danced with them. It was a night for them to forget about everything in life and just have fun as if they were teenagers again. It was great seeing how happy they were and inspired me to be more active in Key Club.

Cleo Tufts-Lockhart

-My favorite aspect of Key Club is being able to work towards change and improvements in this world! I love making connections with people through key club, expanding my horizons, feeling fulfilled, and learning about ways to help, but overall my favorite part is being able to give back to the world. -My favorite Key Club memory is DCON, because Learned about key club there and how much of an impact it really has. It was also a super fun experience!

-My favorite aspect of Key Club is doing good with awesome and caring people who make me feel very welcome even when I haven't been in Key Club a really long time! -My favorite Key Club memory is during RTC. Group members came together to make our own cheers. It was fun and heartwarming when people from different divisions come together to shout the same cheers! -Yes, I do have friends from other divisions: d12s and d26s. I met them during RTC, and they were really nice to me. Even though we all live in different places, it felt like we were one big family.

D2 Member of the Month Glenyss Bautista -My favorite aspect of Key Club is the amount of community service we do. Through this altruism, I've become more supportive of our community and the club itself. Recently, a woman thanked me, on behalf of the club, for our time taken to volunteer and assist the public. Her gratefulness is appreciated and inspires me to continue volunteering. -My closest friend in this division is our vice president Julian. I joined Key Club because of her and to see how much she's done in the past two years, making it all the way to VP, has really made me start thinking about what I can do to better myself. I'm proud of her, and hopefully I'll accomplish things that I'll be proud of myself.

I also like how I'm able to meet so many new people through Key Club. -My favorite memory of Key Club was when I went to events in freshman year and meeting all these people. They really got me pulled into Key Club. Not only I enjoyed my time helping people, but it was also a great way to hang out with friends.

-My favorite aspect is service, though I don't do many. Helping people is fun. I do have some friends, but we aren't close like buddies since I'm not super social. -My favorite Key Club moment was the Oakland Running Festival because it was fun filling cups with Gatorade as well as handing out medals and putting them on the runners as they finished running. Since it was raining, I got a cool aluminum 'cape'. I also got complimented by many people that day lel.

To start off the month of September we helped out at a service event named Mandela Parkway Clean Up. Members and officer came out to help mulch and simply help keep the environment clean! Later, we helped our advisor, Al, in running a photo shoot. Later in the month, we joined our fellow kiwis in the September DCM, where we held a donut bake sale. We learned new cheers and showed off our cool and cute spirit sticks! The next day, we continued our bake sale making in the two days over $100 for PTP. A week later, we attended a sister club event that lasted for three days. Although the event was three days, Alameda was only able to attend on Friday. We had our official first meeting on the 20th after the recruitment of new members from Club Day at school.

Club Reports

September was an extremely busy yet fun month for Albany Key Club. We held nine service events, from a smoothly run boba sale to a huge community event. Even with school starting to get into the usual groove again, Key Clubbers nevertheless pulled through and served the community in every way possible!

So for September, we had 4 service events: DWS, Eats Real Fest, Oaktoberfest, and Broads Run Broadway. At the Eats Real Fest, we helped vendors set up their stalls, prepare food, and served them. At Oaktoberfest, we assisted with setup, clean up, running booths, and other various activities. And for Broads Run Broadway, we helped set up and pass out water bottles to participants.

In the month of September, Arroyo had a total of 5 events. Arroyo held an Poster Making event at our school which was later used during Club Rush. Most of our events were held locally in San Leandro. We volunteered at the SLSF Drake's Brewing Event where volunteers helped guide and make traffic flow smoothly. Arroyo Key Clubbers also helped sort out canned foods at the Bethel Church. At our San Leandro Butterfly Habitat Workday, a couple of volunteers gathered together to clean up around the butterfly mural across from San Leandro Bart. Lastly, Arroyo along with other schools volunteered at a big event in Oakland, the Eat Real Festival. They handed out samples, ran booths, and helped clean up.

17

This past month we had 5 service events. The usual ones are the Berkeley Marina Shoreline Cleanup and the Prisoner's Literature Project. Members also packed sandwiches at GLIDE Memorial Church. Moreover, we also had the two DWS events: Sausal Creek Clean-Up and Monterey Redwoods Trailhead.

18

Wow! September was definitely a very buzz-ing time for Castro Valley Key Clubbers! We kicked off the month with setting up the the local food trucks for a busy night. The following Saturday, we help at our local Fall Festival by setting up the festival. With over 200 signups at Club Day, we for sure had a super successful Club Day. Working closely with our Kiwanis, we served during their Grandparent's Day Breakfast and also for PTP doll making. To wrap up the month, we volunteer for 3 days at the Eat Real Festival in Oakland!

This month we had three service events: Solano Stroll, Cerrito Creek Clean-up, and the Dragon Boat Festival. Earlier in the month we had club rush and got many signups. The next following week, we had many new people coming to the first official meeting. We currently have around 20 new members.

This month Encinal was busy with several service events as well as fundraisers. We passed out flyers for the Eat Reel Festival and also volunteered at the actual event. We also helped out at the DragonBoat Races at Lake Merritt. Not to mention, we also had a good attendance at the September DCM to prepare for FRN. Finally we had a board meeting and service event to prepare for club week, and club week was a success!

In September, we took part in one service which was Eat Real Festival. We helped keep the alcohol from leaving the festival, helped vendors with carrying boxes and helped organized folks. Hopefully we can come back next year!

20

This September, Oakland Tech Kiwis participated in a variety of community service events as the school year continues. On September 2nd, the group held another lunchtime boba sale. On September 19th, volunteers participated in the 21st Annual Northern California Dragon Boat Association Race at Lake Merritt, setting up boats and assisting with registration. Oakland Tech Kiwis also recruited new members at the school's Club Day on the 22nd. Finally, club members are gearing up for FRN at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom next month!

During September, Piedmont Key Club did three events. Members attended an Oakland street clean up a festival, a Creek to Bay Day, and the Eat Real Festival.

21

This month, we held a fundraiser at 8-12 and earned $400 worth of profit from the event. The caps that were previously designed were finally ordered and is expected to arrive by the time FRN comes around. Also, the club recruited new members during club rush!

22

This past month of September we had club rush from September 14th to September 16th. We did not have any events, but we did have our first club meeting of the year on September 20th.

For the month of September, we had three services and a fundraiser at T4. Our first service was joint service with our sister clubs, Tech and Encinal, where we volunteer at the NorCal Dragonboat Festival. Our two services this month was the Out of Darkness Walk and the Eat Real Fest.

Meet your Executive Assistant,

Nikki Benitez What is your favorite Key Club Memory? My favorite Key Club memory is RTC 2015. It was a blast and I got to meet new people.

How did you join Key Club? I joined key club freshman year because a friend invited me to a general meeting that she didn't want to attend alone.

What is one unique fact about yourself that people wouldn't know unless they're told. I have a collection of coins from different countries.

DNE’s Closing Message Hello Kiwis! October has certainly been a jam packed month! We had RTC 2016: Animators of Service, Key to College, and Fall Rally North 2016 all in one month. Region Training Conference: Animators of Service with Region 9 and Region 17 was super fun. Although I missed the workshops due to SAT, the campfire was very entertaining. It lasted so long that the power generator died, but luckily it we were nearly done. Did you know the District Governor and Secretary was present at our RTC? Key to College at UC Berkeley held by University Circle K was super informational. As a senior, I was already informed most of the information that was told, but that did not mean there weren’t new stuff. The campus tour was adventurous as we saw the library and other department halls, because that was certainly new to me. Last but not least, Fall Rally North 2016! This was certainly a superb and heart-wrenching event of all next to RTC. It was nice to see a sea of different divisions come together to see their hearts out. The wave and sneak was super cool to see everyone work together to make it happen. Although we didn’t win the spirit stick, I believe we are more than that. We worked in unison and cheered our hearts out so much we lost our voice! Thank you so much for reading Kiwi Chronicles. I hope to see you next time in the next issue!
