WHATS POPPIN’

Welcome back to another issue of Otter Tribune! Since August is the month of summer, I hope you all have had a great one :( It feels like summer just started, but all good things come to an end! This summer has truly been one for the books; I got to see Taylor Swift, I got my drivers license, AND made my very first Division newsletter!!! Thankfully, since Westminster is apart HBUHSD opposed to GGUSD we school 2 weeks later— so at the of writing I’m still in summer! I realize majority of readers will have already begun school, so I hope you all had great first day of school!

JULY DCM: NIGHT MARKET

On July 22, Santa Ana Valley sold pancakes and popsicles at the Annual 2023 Night Market DCM. Our day started at 12:30 PM as my officers came to my house to start cooking the Nutella pancakes. We had a great time making the batter and adding the Nutella drips to every pancake. While two officers worked on cooking, I finished our poster and found materials around the house to help us transfer the food over to the DCM. Eventually, after three hours, we finished making the pancakes and headed over to the DCM. I took an emergency grocery trip to buy plates and whipped cream! Afterward, we set up our table at the park and began selling. Despite small mishaps like the popsicles melting due to the heat, we kept a positive attitude and made it to the finish line. We also had the option to do an at-home service event with blankets! It was another great DCM!

SANTA ANA VALLEY KEY CLUB SOCIAL

Santa Ana Valley Key Club held a social on July 1st where we invited Santa Ana Key club members to join us. The gathering held food brought by other members and we had a picnic and mingled with each other. Additionally, during the second half of the social, members started on the service event and wrote fun little encouraging letters dedicated to trans people, where they filled it with fun designs. Friendships were strengthened and moods were lifted and the summer feeling was ever-so present in this social, and it was a greatly executed idea meant to motivate members into doing the service event. Plus, Santa Ana High School was a blast and we loved bonding with them!

DREAM LAB SERVICE EVENT

DreamLab is a research app that allows individuals to leave their phones on overnight. This app is powered by Vodafone Foundation and can be found in app stores It enables users to conduct research by equipping the app. Multiple Key Club members, from July 10-July 14, present their support towards a particular research project and are able to receive 5 hours of community service hours. Some of the projects include Cell Identity Hunter, Long COVID, and Corona-AI. Each project targets a research focus where users are able to select which they choose to support. By leaving the app on, while charging overnight, the app creates problems that are to be calculated and sent to a research unit. The continuous process promotes more research to be done in a matter of hours while one is sleeping. Due to Key Club’s participation, researchers are given more solutions by the hour. The simple task is making a difference by utilizing technology to change lives throughout countries and around the world. My contribution includes nearly 7 hours of research towards the project named Tropical Cyclone Modelling (Phase 2). I enjoy the simplicity of the participation as it is contributing so much to the world.
