Throughout the month of October, clubs within our division and beyond have been Trick-or-treating for one of our preferred charities: UNICEF. As one of the world’s largest providers of vaccines, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, safe water and sanitation, quality education, and more. Here is one UNICEF success story.

UNICEF helped to fight Measles Outbreaks in Samoa, Fiji and Tonga

In early November of last year, the Government of Samoa declared a state of emergency and closed schools after a deadly outbreak of measles began to spread. UNICEF then delivered almost 300,000 vaccines and medical supplies which included 115,500 doses of measles vaccines to regions of Samoa. Also, to help combat vaccine misinformation, UNICEF and WHO have prepared a communication toolkit to be used for measles prevention, which has been shared with all Pacific Island governments.

T TREE

PLANTING

Partnering with the Benicia Tree Foundation, 7 Benicia Key Club members along with 13 other volunteers came to Francesca Terrance Park on a Saturday morning for 3 hours to help plant and mulch trees. Supervisor Monica Brown and Mayor Steve Young of Benicia also came to welcome the volunteers. A demonstration of tree planting from the Benicia City Parks staff was given before the event began.

Benicia members created a joke book to cheer up students and make them laugh. Each person created a page or multiple pages with jokes and drawings depending on how fast they finished. Members then compiled all the pages into a virtual joke book so they could be sent out to local elementary schools.

TRICK OR

TREAT As Trick-or-treat for UNICEF when virtual this year, Benicia members still managed to raise money by donating, watching videos, and doing activities. So far $144 dollars has been raised.

AC Key Clubbers gathered on Zoom as they constructed Halloween grams for loved ones. While working on grams, members and officers exchanged spooky ghost stories and even played a few rounds of Among Us! American Canyon certainly kept the spirit of Halloween alive in their own way.

Pumpkin Paint

PICK-UP

With the collaboration of the American Canyon Arts Foundation and the Kiwanis of American Canyon, parents and guardians were able to drive through a local parking lot and pick up pumpkins for their children. Key Clubbers were able to assist in head counting the cars, and distributing the correct amount of pumpkins to each family. People given pumpkins were able to either keep their pumpkins or drop off their finished pumpkin at the Wetlands’ Edge for a city-wide Pumpkin Path.

AC Members were asked to distribute candy to cars while in their Halloween costumes. This event was held so that young children could still experience the joy of receiving candy from strangers on Halloween. Many local businesses also set up booths along the route in order to both advertise their services and to celebrate Halloween with the young kids.

TRICK OR TREAT

STREET

November DWF: Cooking Class On November 14th, Division 8 held a joint-fundraiser with Division 8 Kiwanis. The President of Benicia Kiwanis, Heidi Cotler, held a cooking class over zoom where she taught participants how to make a few dishes along with a desserts. She made baked chicken with gravy, autumn roasted vegetables, and pumpkin pudding cake. $595 of donations for PTP were raised by both Kiwanis and Key Club members!

According to Japanese tradition, folding 1,000 paper cranes grants someone a wish of good health. For this month’s DWS on zoom, members created origami cranes and mailed them to cheer people up and to wish them good health. Sophia Li, the Service Projects Coordinator, hosted the live service event on November 15th. The photo above shows the cranes that Sophia made during the event.

NOVEMBER DCM:

new member orientation

As many new members were recruited during the beginning of the school year in August, The Division Leadership Team decided to hold a new member orientation for the November DCM. The DCM aimed to give a brief overview of what we do, our impact, and why new members should join or stay. Workshops were held by the Division Leadership team. The workshops included the Key Club structure, fundraising, common terms, and the member recognition program.
