Hello Division 8, Welcome to my first official newsletter as the 2019-2020 Division 8 News Editor! My name is Ilse Rojo

A word from the News Editor

(pronounced ill-say) and I am an incoming senior at Mare Island Technology Academy in Vallejo. I am beyond excited to be making this newsletter for you all! I joined Key Club my sophomore year but wasn't very active until my junior year. I decided to apply to be news editor because in my home club, I missed the chance to be the club editor but when this opportunity came,, I went for it! And look at that,... I actually got it! Hmm more background on me? Well I love photography (which you will see in my newsletters), hanging out with my friends, reading and listening to music. I play/run varsity: soccer, cross country and track for Vallejo High School and I am also the MIT Senior Class President. So there you go, you have much more background on that girl in the green dress on the right haha. I am so excited to meet everyone! Just know I am a very quiet

and serious person but as soon as someone says hello, my face lightens up and I want to become your friend! I hope you enjoy my newsletters and please feel free to contact me for anything!

In service, Ilse Rojo d08.cnhkc.dne@gmail.com

Executive Assistant Aimee Han

Executive Assistant Kahlani RemorinÂ

Hey D8 Ballers! My name is Aimee Han and I will be serving as one of your executive assistants for the 2019-2020 term. This upcoming school year, I will be a sophomore at Benicia High School. When I am not swamped with school work, I enjoy listening to music, reading, and volunteering at Key Club service events. During my term, I intend to increase member count for Division 8 as well as attendance at DCMs. I look forward to the year ahead of us and the accomplishments we will achieve! Hi, I'm Kahlani Remorin from MIT Academy. I joined Key Club in my freshman year and I didn't go to any of the meetings because I was scared, but the next year I joined again because I had friends to go wt me. I'm so excited to be one of yiour executive ssistants and hope we all have an amazing term! 2

Executive Assistant Juliana Tran Hi Ballers! My name is Juliana Tran & I will be one of your Executive Assistants for the 2019-2020 term. I am currently a Senior at American Canyon High School. One of my favorite aspects of Key Club is seeing the joy in everyone’s faces during each and every service event we have. I hope to share that experience with all of you during this term, no matter what it takes! Outside of Key Club, I love playing in my orchestra for the community & beyond. Meet the DLT

Tech Editor Alex Cortez My name is Alex Cortez, and I’ll be Division 8’s tech editor for 20192020 term! As tech editor, it is my responsibility to not only create posters and designs but to manage D8’s social media platforms as well. Although this may seem like a supportive role compared to LTG or EAs, I have worked in graphic design for over 3 years and I strive to become one of its finests: making it a strong reason why I wanted to become a DTE, out of many. My previous contributions in Key Club was as Benicia Key Club’s tech editor officer, then it was to equip our current Division 8 LTG, Katie Han, with the right tools needed to help her get to where she is now. I may have a small role in a big world, but nothing overcomes it like heart and persistence with Key Club! 4

Meet the DLT

Fundraising Coordinator Katie Own Hello Division 8! My name is Katie Own and I will be serving as your Fundraising Coordinator for the 2019-2020 term. I am a rising senior at Benicia High School and I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with the rest of the Division Leadership Team this year. I joined Key Club my sophomore year, and immediately I developed connections with the members in my home club. Since then I have learned the importance of being an active member of my community and serving others. I decided to join the DLT as your Fundraising Coordinator in order to improve our Division's fundraising efforts. With the works of each individual club and the division as a whole, Division 8 will be ballin'!!! (Special thanks to LTG Katie for having us include a picture.) 5

Spirit Coordinator Kirsten Hernandez

Let me just say I’m really excited for this year because I’ll be able to interact with more of you. And since I get to work alongside my friend Kirsten we’ll plan to make it the best we can, may it be through our spirit or service. I don’t know what else to say I guess. I’m weird but in a good way so I’m down to talk to anyone. Random fact about me I really appreciate the art of cheese itself. That is all. Region 9 Olympics As a Region, we made over $500! All proceeds will split up between each Division for donation and budgeting. Only five people from Division 8 went but that didn't stop our D8 spirit! Thank you to Fairfield Kiwanian Emma for generously driving us and helping out at the event!

American Canyon Our Rib Cookout was held at the Boys and Girls Club on June 15. The event helped raise enough money for a new flagpole to be installed at the Clubhouse, which was dedicated on July 4th. Volunteering at this event was pretty fun as we interacted with the other volunteers. Every volunteer had something to do like helping make the salads, cooking the potatoes and ribs, and serving the food to our customers. We even did a KC cheer for each person who picked up their meal! All of the officers went to our president Nate’s house in order to bond, discuss goals for the club, and discuss posable fundraisers. While there, we worked together to create food for us to eat while we held our meeting. First, we worked on making mushroom pasta and stuffed mushrooms. We then had our meeting, which consisted of us discussing goals we wanted to achieve during this term and how to achieve them, as well as possible fundraisers we could do during the term. After the meeting, we began making crepes for dessert. " I think the team effort had a very important role when it came to [the Rib Cookout]. Overall this event allowed us to help do what we learn to do and having fun by doing so. -Chris Cai On Independence Day, Key Club members teamed up with Kiwanis members to walk in our town’s annual parade! We decorated our float, passed out candies and pins to parade onlookers, and overall had an amazing time representing the accomplishments of both Key Club and Kiwanis. After the parade, we were even recognized by the city for our efforts in installing the Boys and Girls Club flagpole!

Benicia The Sons and Daughters of Italy hosts monthly dinners where members of the Italian community gather to talk, celebrate their heritage, and of course enjoy amazingly delicious food. Our Key Clubbers volunteered as servers for the event and also assisted in clean-up on June 9, 2019. The dish of the night were a chicken and mushroom stew and pesto pasta.

Graduation Leis Fundraiser This fundraising event was intended to raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program by selling handcrafted leis to graduating seniors. While it was challenging to keep up with the continuous orders, in the end we successfully made and sold enough leis, totalling $415 in the end.

Farmers' Market Key Club helped recruit more members for our club. In addition, volunteers are given are clicker to keep track of the number of people that attend the Market. 14
