RTC It was my second, and unfortunately last, RTC. It was amazing learning more about Key Club and making more friends. The bonfire was an unforgettable experience.

Hello! First time RTC-goer here. From the bat, I've always heard that RTC was the coveted 'Key Club moment', where members and officers alike learn to love Key Club and service and it is what fuels their passion to keep on serving. My experience at RTC not only taught me more about CNH, but through workshops, through stories, and through an epic campfire, I learned where I needed to improve and I plan on pushing myself to succeed more than I will have ever imagined.

After that torturous drive up the mountain, when I first saw the cute little paper sign that said "RTC" I said to myself "this better be good." And boy, I was not disappointed. RTC absolutely blew me away; it was out of this world (hehe). Even though I couldn't find my advisor for the first half hour, I was so excited the moment I was welcomed in by the super enthusiastic LTG's at the entrance that I promptly ditched my mom and ran off (sorry mom). My first time at RTC was an unforgettable experience, so much more than just learning about the key lyfe. I met tons of great people; being around hundreds of people with the same drive and dedication to service was just surreal. All the aspects of RTC were amazing, from the shirt design, to the workshops, to the hardworking advisors and LTG's that made this possible, to the ghost stories in my cabin, to Andy Chau's bee-utiful hair...and who can forget the food and all the keyuties from all over the area? (especially the D12S key-uties..from Leland..am I right ;-)) Nonetheless, my favorite part about RTC was the skits (duh, Calvin and Anna were the MC's) Sitting with everyone and having a friendly competition just brought everyone even closer too. Even the advisors had a skit, which was very entertaining to watch. All in all, RTC was more than just an educational trip to the woods, but an experience that will stick with me forever. Forging new bonds, and reinforcing old ones through the love of key lyfe was something I never could have done if I hadn't gone. I got like 5 new FB friends after, wow!!1!1!1! But alas, once the weekend ended, I proceeded to sit and cry for a bit because school was right after. But then I remembered, service never sleeps, and I'll always be a part of this key fam. Thanks for an outstanding weekend key club and the LTG's!

CLUB REPORTS 16

L L I H W E R D AN My name is Janie Lam and I volunteered at Rock N Roll from 6:00am to 1pm. I came to the site at 6:00am with a slight confusion of where the place was located but the staff there were very kind and helped me find my way to the check-in tent. After, signing in and getting my shirt and backpack, I was immediately handed a job to do. The first job I had to do was to direct people to certain locations when they needed help. Such as, where the start line is and the bag check. I worked in a pair and my partner was someone I did not know, but she was very talkative and very nice! We were told that we can go back to the tent when there were no more runners coming in which was around 8:30am. After that, we went back and gave the maps back. We then went to the finish line and helped pass out water to those runners who had finished. This was not an easy job since we had to open all the water bottle packages and put it in the bin that was full of ice. However, there would be a man who would always check on us making sure we are okay. He even pre-opened the water bottle package to make it easier on us. I enjoyed seeing all the runners relieved and excited faces as they finished the finish line. I am glad I got the chance to meet new people and was able to do a good cause! Janie Lam Member

Rock n Roll Marathon was an awesome opportunity for myself and other members to interact with other service clubs in the area. Despite the numbness of our arms and the scratches on our hand, our jobs at the marathon were worthwhile after seeing the faces of the runners as they past the finish line. Our work although it seems small, is important to runners and the function of the marathon as a whole. I definitely recommend everyone volunteer at this event in the future! You’ll make lots of friends and have a lot of fun! Peterson Nguyen Member

ANN SO BRATO Throughout my four years of being in Key Club, I've never attended an RTC, FRN, or DCON. Up until last year, I didn't even know what some of these events were. Occasionally, I would attend a DCM, but I mostly stuck with doing service events. And yes, I love volunteering at service events, but I felt like I was missing out on something for my Key Club experience . I barely knew anyone outside of our own club. So, despite having to take an SAT on the same day, I decided I would go to RTC even if it would be my first and last year. Turns out, my decision was the best one I could've made. I met so many people who are such great leaders at their schools, and I created so many new friendships with people I wouldn't have met otherwise and who love helping others as much as I do from our Division, Division 2, Division 26 N, etc. And yes, while I was so excited to meet new people and expand my network, it really comes down to learning what Key Club is for you. So, my advice to underclassmen is to obviously don't procrastinate like I did, but to step out of your comfort zone and to take opportunities like RTC, FRN, or DCON to have your Key Club moment and discover what Key Club is and why you are apart of this special club. Before RTC, Key Club was just where I would do service hours. After RTC, I'm proud and inspired that I'm apart of something special with so many other great people with the same passion of improving my home, school, and community. Kayla torres Tech Editor

The wild life festival was a lot of fun. It was probably one of the best events I've ever been to! My job was to work at a game area. My game was the ring toss. Meeting a lot of kids and helping them make the ring in the hoop was really fun because I love working with kids. Kristy Le Project Coordinator

D N A L LE The Color For Kids Color Run was the Truploy Foundation's first event. It was a charity run to help foster kids. The organization needed lots of help, and they found it in the numerous volunteer groups that showed up, including Leland Key Club. We played a crucial role in the race; we directed the runners at the first fork in the road, and also cheered them on. I'm proud to say our core values were exhibited by all of our members; we also met plenty of great people. We enjoyed our time there, and look forward to doing service with the Truploy Foundation again! Colin Nguyen Outreach Coordinator

Leland key club was so enthusiastic at this event! Although only 2 members came on the Saturday shift, I'm happy to say that they worked with excitement and to the best of their ability. Sunday's shift was a bit more exciting; I'm really pleased that our key club worked so efficiently with the other clubs and their members! We were sent onto recycling originally, however it wasn't very organized so they basically had us stand in the middle of the park for no reason. Luckily, Leland's members took initiative and instead of taking advantage of the situation and doing nothing, they helped out at other booths in the meanwhile! We were eventually put at the power bar booth, where each member worked to their fullest advertising ability to get runner to get a bar. This event was great because not only did they work hard, but we were able to socialize with other clubs and interact with many of the runners! Katie Chen Project Coordinator

OAK GRO VE After volunteering at Coastal Clean Up, I realized how badly our drought really is. The lake at Hellyer Park was completely dried up that it was possible for the volunteers and I to walk inside the middle of the lake to pick up trash. Our huge group of Key Club volunteers, with our trash bags and trash picking sticks, picked up multiple bags of trash The overwhelming amount of trash, from glass bottles, to plastic cups, to toys, filled up about 10 bags of trash, and that was only half of the lake! After this event, I made sure to watch how I’m using my water and where I’m throwing my trash. Jennifer Hoang Member

At the Almaden Art and Wine Festival, we helped with picking up litter around the festival and set up some booths there. My group and I also got to help at the booths by counting tickets, and in the end, we took apart the booths. It was really fun because they played music and it was really nice looking at all of the art the festival had set up around us. I would love to volunteer again. Michelle Le Member

Honestly, I thought that I was going to be useless when I volunteered at the Race to the End of Summer. However, people there made use of you so that you won't have to stand around awkwardly like a some events. The best part about the event was handing out chilled water bottles to exhausted but cheerful marathoners who finished the race! I went to it last year as well, and I think Race to the End of Summer is one the best events to start off with volunteering. Yvonne Chen Member

Runs are always really popular with our club, and I love attending them and seeing our members having fun and giving it their all to cheer on the exhausted runners. Though it was quite tiring to stand for 6 hours while holding out a cup, our members always seem to find away to make it enjoyable whether it was by competing with each other or joking around. The only shame was that because some other clubs had members not officially signed up for the event show up, many of our members were not able to get a shirt even though they had signed up online prior to the event. SILVER CREEK This was my first time attending the Luna Chalk Art Festival and it was absolutely one of the most inspiring events I was able to help with! There were so many beautiful and astounding drawings that I saw while volunteering. I admired all the hard work and passion people put into their art and I can't wait to attend the event next year! Yolanda Ha Member

Waking up early on a cold Saturday morning is usually not my favorite thing in the world. Add in a bunch of dogs and an opportunity to volunteer for Key Club however, and I'm there. I volunteered at the Hoofin' & Woofin' 5K9 Dog Run. I feel that this was an awesome experience to expose myself to certain dog breeds, and certain clubs (aka Animal Allies), especially since I don't get enough time to volunteer with animals. Hopefully, Key Club does something like this again in the near future. Carmela Distura Member

N E L G W O L L I W On Saturday, September 12th, Willow Glen Key Club joined the division to journey through San FransoKEYo. At the Division Council Meeting, hosted by the lovely Leland Key Club, everyone became a personal healthcare companion! We made cards for the patients at Children’s Miracle Network. It was very fun to create the cards so we could put a smile to all the children’s faces! There were a diversity of cards that were simple yet creative and cute. I really love how easy it is to make someone’s day better which means anyone can do it! Shayla Huynh Editor

On Saturday, September 19th, Willow Glen Key Clubbers walked in Founder’s Day Parade. The parade was held in downtown Willow Glen. It was fun to celebrate the community and represent the Kiwanis family! I really enjoyed coming together as a community. There were countless proud citizens and a huge variety of floats. The Kiwanis and Key Clubbers walked together throughout the neighborhood holding banners to let everyone know that we are proud to be in the K Family! Angela Taing Vice President
