happy 2014 villains!

PC: ANDY WONG, 35E LTG

GREETINGS FROM YOUR LTG Hello Division 12 South Super Villains! We have made it through yet another year with amazing accomplishments and have made a huge impact on our communities. The start of 2014 brings us new challenges and opportunities! We want to start off the year strong and strive to do our best to give our all these last few months of our term. Although District Convention is arriving quickly, we still have plenty of time to leave our golden legacies. Key Club Recruitment Week will be implemented January 13-17. Many of us forget that membership recruitment is a yearlong process! Now that we are back from break, we can use the start of this second semester to promote Key Club and help increase member

-ship once again! One of our core values is inclusiveness, and we always welcome new members! At the start of this term, we set an ambitious goal to achieve 20,00 hours of service by the end of the term. As of December we are at 14,236.73 hours of service. This is an amazing accomplishment already! I am extremely proud of all of you golden leaders for making such a big impact on our communities. We are less than 6,000 hours away from reaching our goal. To reach our goal, we will need to focus our energies into what Key Club is all about – service. We still have three months to go! I bee-lieve we can do it! I hope you enjoy the rest of the newsletter, see you soon! Lindon Tran, Lieutenant Governor 2013-2014

DECEMBER RESPONSE

VILLAIN’S RESPONSE: What is your FAVORITE part of DCON?

“What is one thing you would like to accomplish next year (2014) before the end of the 2013-2014 term?”

GOLDEN ACTION: Create a GOLDEN ticket to DCON in any way you want and send it to LTG Lindon Tran by the end of the month!

DECEMBER ACTION “Hand make a Christmas card to drop off at a random house in your neighborhood. Be sure to include warm, thoughtful messages!”

GOLDEN “My goal before the term ends is to empower Willow Glen Key Club to become one of the stronger clubs of this upcoming term. I shall educate the officer-elects of their responsibilities, encourage them to strive for excellence, and lead them along the path towards success. My hope is that after graduation, WGKC will be left in the hands of fully confident, capable, and caring members who are ready to serve.” -

Donald Franks, Willow Glen

“There are several things I want to accomplish before the end of the 2014 term in April such as fund raising certain amounts of donations for ELIMINATE or PTP, serving a certain amount of hours, and sending x amount of members to DCON or DCMs. However, as president of Ann Sobrato Key Club, I hope to inspire Sobrato members to run for executive positions and to serve to their fullest. I want to inspire a generation of new leaders to take the reins and lead not just Sobrato, but Division 12 South to success after the leaders of the Class of 2014 have left. This goal is near and dear to my heart; it is more important to me than anything else Key Club related at this moment.” -

Kyle Dimla, Ann Sobrato

“As the 2013-2014 term is coming towards an end, it’s a beginning for something new. But before the “new” commences, I would like to accomplish a goal for the upcoming year of 2014. That goal is to not only impact hose I serve around me, but to ensure they properly understand the basis of how Key Club creates a difference in our community. Aside from that, I would li to emphasize the Children’s Miracle Network because the children living on this valuable planet are the future of change with the potential we see in them.” -

ABOUT KEITH HAWKINS Keith Hawkins, speaker from Real Inspiration Incorporated, has spoken at schools and events for students all over – maybe even at your school! He presented for CNH in 2011 and is coming back to speak and present workshops. Through their four key beliefs, Real Inspiration aids schools and businesses to resolve common problems. Keith Hawkins’ Keynote sessions are AWESOME! Mr. Keith Hawkins visited Ann Sobrato for our annual Day of Respect when the school invites speakers to present about bullying, harassment, separatism, and violence which affect everyone in education. He had great magic tricks that come with a meaningful message! His message brings an important understanding of respect and helping people understand the greatness they have to offer. He has been a huge inspiration and has made a huge impact on the lives of many. -

One of the biggest and most fun DCMs of the year, the December DCM was hosted at Gunderson High School on December 13th! Gunderson Key Club successfully hosted the event with several games and activities including musical chairs and a nice Christmas photo booth!

pioneer “On December 7, I attended Toys for Tots from 8 AM to 12 PM, and I was surely not surprised by how much fun the InterKey event was. Because it is my second time attending it, I felt so nostalgic coming back to the warehouse and sorting out the toys. Even though it was pretty exhausting, I was really pleased and delighted because I spent my Saturday morning with my fellow members. My volunteering experience may seem trivial, but to the hundreds of lowincome children who are receiving these gifts for Christmas, I have created magic in their lives. Knowing this, I feel even more enthusiastic and satisfied this holiday season because I have created an impact in many children’s lives. I have shared the gift of the holiday season with my community, and there is nothing better than that.” - Mindy Tran

andrew hill Working at Christmas in the Park in the Kiwanis Food Booth was standard fare volunteer work, but to me, it was something more. Serving food in the midst of a city transformed into Christmas while Christmas tunes played and Santas walked by gave off an atmosphere that filled me with an immense happiness and pulled at my heartstrings. Seeing people’s face light up as I handed them their hot cider or hot chocolate made my day. It wasn’t easy, as my shift was during the dinner rush, but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it as I knew for the rest of my life, I would never experience something like this again. - Dan Nguyen, Member

On December 13th, we helped out at the Fantasy of Lights acting as safety ambassadors from 5:30PM to 10PM. This project was held at Vasona Lake Park and is a 1.5 mile drive through holiday lights and displays. Members had a lot of fun experiencing this great display of Christmas lights and holiday spirit. -

On December 6th, around 6-10 P.M. I had the last minute chance to volunteer at Christmas in the Park with Kiwanis members and my friends. We served hot chocolate and snacks in a toasty trailer to visitors in the park, and surprisingly it was an even better experience than I had first imagined it to be. As we served snacks to people I kept hearing “Have a good night and Merry Christmas”, which I was not expecting and really felt the true Christmas Spirit for the first time. While working I was like “Woah I feel like I’m in a Christmas movie” and got really excited, then I kept switching shifts so I could try everything. I never really noticed that little things like capping hot chocolate cups and scooping popcorn into a bag with everyone was all it took to really bring everyone together until that day. -

On the chilly autumn morning of November 23rd in Downtown San Jose, Sobrato Key Clubbers were the first to arrive at Caesar Chavez Plaza to set up the annual attraction, Christmas in the Park. After receiving a safety lecture from the Park directors, volunteers split into teams to set up their own display. First, volunteers swept off dust and old leaves, and then began the decorating process. Spreading Christmas spirit, volunteers unraveled and stapled garlands to the displays, decorated with colorful Christmas lights. To add the finishing touches, bags of soft cotton “snow” were spread and golden-trimmed red ribbons were hung up. Throughout the month of December, the displays at Christmas in the Park will be seen by thousands of people from all over! -

Kyle Dimla, Ann Sobrato

OGKC sold handmade mistletoes, candy canes, and a note for the recipient for this year’s Christmas grams. The price for this pack of three was $3 and the money will go to our club funds! It was great to see all the Christmas smiles and spirit around the whole school! - Christy Nguyen, Editor On the afternoon of November 23rd from 10AM to 4PM, Willow Glen participated in a food drive event hosted by our sponsoring Kiwanis Club at the Safeway on San Carlos and Meridian. We helped collect food for local food banks, which then organized our gatherings for distribution to families and individuals who need an extra boost during the upcoming holiday season. News reporters interviewed some of our members, who described the purpose of the event and how it contributed to the community. This was a fantastic experience that allowed us to provide food for families and spread the word about Key Club on the local news. -

In the month of November, we volunteered at the Turkey Trot held in Downtown San Jose! Turkey Trot is an annual event that has been around for quite some time and has helped many organizations out, such has Second Harvest and many more. Our school had a great turn out, serving water to runners and various other tasks. We can’t wait again for next year. Overall, we had an amazing experience and it’s always great to reflect your hard work through community service! - Kevin Tran, Editor

HAPPY NEW YEAR, VILLAINS! A new year means New Years’ resolutions! My goal this new year of 2014 is to leave Division 12 South with inspired and ambitious leaders as I graduate from high school. I look forward to serving to the end of the 2013-2014 term and can’t wait to see what ALL of you leaders have in store for the division and our community! Stay golden,

Kyle Dimla Division 12 South News Editor
