I was born and raised in beautiful San Jose, CA. I joined this wonderful organization when I was a young, naïve freshman. I didn’t realize at first how much Key Club would impact my life and how much it would mean to me. Ever since my first service project, I have become committed to Key Club’s values and what it represents. I have been given the opportunity to serve as the Division 12 South lieutenant governor, and I plan to make the most out of this term. I want to push this division to exceed expectations and to set higher standards. I’ve always had someone pushing me to achieve great heights. Now, I would like to help motivate and inspire every D12South member. I truly believe if we set our minds to it, we can reach over 20,000 service hours! Having experience serving as my home club’s president and Kiwanis liaison in the past, I know what it takes to lead and to emphasize the power of service. I also plan to apply knowledge that I’ve gained during past RTCs, OTCs, and DCONs. I look forward to bringing new ideas and skills to the division. During my term, I hope to increase member attendance at training conferences and to utilize the summer to serve our communities as much as we can. As leaders, we all play a huge role in reaching our common goal – to make a difference. I would love to get the chance to meet and get to know each and every one of you. CNH | KEY CLUB July 25, 2013 For my fellow Key Club membres: It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Gabby Baniqued, and I am currently a sophomore in Ann Sobrato. Last year, I was given the opportunity of joining Key club as a socially awkward freshman. To this day, my life has been impacted so much by this organization. I used to be so quiet, and awkward, but this wonderful organization helped me to meet more people and helped me be outgoing and social. Words cannot express my gratitude to Key club. My dedication and commitment to this organization is the least I can do to give back for everything Key Club has done for me. I am honored to say that I am now Division 12 South’s Executive Assistant, and I know that I will make the best out of this term. Of course, during this term, I have some goals that I’d love to focus on. While serving our beloved Lieutenant Governor, my goal is to be able to communicate with everyone freely, and create new bonds. The closer we are, the more we can work efficiently, and get closer to our 20,000 hours service goal! I have other goals in mind as well, but I’ll talk about them as we progress more during this term. My current position as secretary has helped me grow into a leader, and taught me to keep a professional attitude. I may only have had one position, but it doesn’t mean that I am not capable of being Executive Assistant. Through my past experiences, I believe I have the current skills to serve my division. After losing my club’s freshman representative election, I strived and worked hard to be secretary. Through my hard work and determination, I have what it takes to serve this division efficiently. As a leader, I am so grateful to be able to serve this division. This division has made a huge impact on my life, and as Executive Assistant, I would like to express my gratitude by working efficiently to achieve our goals. Not only that, but I would like create new bonds, and make new friends. This division is amazing, but I’d like to make it extraordinary. July 25, 2013 To my fellow 12 South Villains, My name is Audrey Lopez-Valdez, and I am an incoming junior at Leland High School (currently transferring to Pioneer High School). I was born in San Jose, CA and I have lived here for 16 years. I first joined Key Club during my freshman year of High School because I thought it would be a great way to meet new friends and complete my community service requirements. I never imagined that Key Club would become this important to me, and I fell in love with the organization and all of the 12 South members at my first DCM. I have been chosen as one of this year’s executive assistants and I am excited to work with our division to grow and improve. I was previously a project coordinator during my freshman year, and I plan to use my leadership and communication skills to help Lindon and our division in any way that is needed. I also plan on growing and improving as a leader by using this year to learn what it takes to keep things running smoothly in our flourishing division. In order for our division to continue to be successful, I think it is very important to be inclusive and build strong connections. July 25, 2013 To my fellow member of the Kiwanis Family: My name is Philip Witcraft, and I am an eager student at Pioneer High School. I was born in Chelsea, Newham of the United Kingdom, I was raised there until I emigrated to the United States of America, more specifically, San Jose, California when I was 6 years old. I became a member of the Kiwanis Family when I was a freshman in high school, not more than two years ago. When I first joined Key Club, I hadn't the slightest idea on how much it would change my life, and how much it would mean to me. But ever since my first service project with Key Club, I have been hooked, and I have learned to appreciate Key Club's vision and values and apply them to my life. I have been given the opportunity to serve as one of the Division 12 South Executive Assistants, and I am planning to work with the rest of Division Leadership team to make the most out of this term. I want to help this division succeed and maintain a standard of excellence. I personally believe that whenever someone is making their best effort, amazing results happen. I want to help make sure that members are putting forward their best effort. If we all put forward our best effort, I am more than confident that our goals will be exceeded. Having experience at both the member and officer level, I know what it takes to make the members feel motivated and appreciated. I also plan to use knowledge I have gained through my various Kiwanis family trainings. I want to bring new perspectives and ideas to the division. During my term, I hope to establish a strong member relations and recognition system with the help of the division leadership team, and to reach out and allow members to contribute their various ideas and skills by the use of various committees. It is my goal to be the best leader I can be, and make this a better experience for everyone. I would absolutely be honored to meet and get to know every single one of you. July 25, 2013 To my fellow Division 12 South Key Club Super Villains: I am Kyle Dimla, a hardworking senior at Ann Sobrato High School. Although I am a native of San Jose, I attend high school all the way in Morgan Hill! During my sophomore year, I was given the opportunity to become an officer of the struggling newborn Ann Sobrato Key Club. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to advocating Key Club core values and inspiring other Key Club members to reach greater heights. Given the opportunity to serve Division 12 South as News Editor, I am dedicated to pushing Division 12 South to its highest potential and raising the bar by effectively publicizing and promoting service, fund raising, spirit, and Key Club core values. I want to contribute as much as I possibly can to reaching our goal of 20,000 service hours not only by creating visually appealing and informative newsletters, but also by connecting better with the members. My experience as Bulletin Editor, Vice President, and current President of Ann Sobrato Key Club, I’ve developed several skills and habits to efficiently serve as a leader. Having attended two OTCs, RTC, and two DCONs, I have learned many things from experienced leaders in Key Club. Now, as Division News Editor, I hope to bring several new ideas and methods that will help carry Division 12 South to the top. During the 2012-2013 term, Division 12 South successfully exceeded our goal of 18,000 hours of service. This term, we want to push even more and reach for 20,000 service hours! By utilizing the summer months, we can definitely achieve this goal. As of right now, we have completed 3726 hours total. Take a look at the monthly trend – hours of service should be increasing instead of decreasing! As a club, set a monthly service hour goal. You can even set your own monthly service hour goal!

Training Conference is an event in which Key Clubbers from all over the Bay Area come together to share a fantabulous weekend. It is a two day camping trip where you can learn more about Key Club, listen to amazing speakers, and attend educational workshops. The District Board will teach you more about your position and your potential to go even further within Key Club, while the speakers will inform you more about the district projects. But wait, there’s more! There is also a campfire with skits, a dance with alternate activities, and hundreds of other energetic Key Clubbers who are eager to make new friends and create new memories. EXPERIENCE
Being a spirit coordinator for FRN 2012 was the best experience in my life, with prepping and everything else. All the Norcal Key Clubbers getting together and showing their spirit was very breath taking. When it’s 12South’s time to show our spirit, we bring it! Current LTGs and District Board members are auctioned off to fund raise for PTP. The spirit battles are the most fun – we yell at the top of our lungs and stand until we drop to show that Division 12 South has the most spirit! INTERNATIONAL This past month, I've had the privilege to attend International Convention 2013 in Washinton D.C. This was my second ICON and I must say, it was a different experience, but it was still fun and memorable! Because we were staying in the heart of the nation's Capitol, Cali-Nev-Ha had a three day Bee Tour! We buzzed all around national monuments, buildings, historical places, and even got to go to fascinating museums including the Smithsonian and Spy Museum. Everywhere we went, we dominated the area like a bee swarm! Along with our touring, what would a Key Club event be without doing some service? CNH woke up bright and early to attend a Kids Against Hunger Service Project, where we, along with Key Clubbers from all over the world came together to package 1,060,000 meals for malnourished children and their families! The feeling of doing service is definitely one of the greatest perks of being a Key Clubber!

CNH Key Clubbers filled with spirit participated in the general sessions, hours of caucusing, recognition, Service Fair, educational workshops, Eliminate dinner, House of Delegates, and so much more! As we were reaching the end of convention, it was time for the retirement of the old 2012 2013 board and installation of the newly elected 2013 - 2014 board of Key Club International | JULY 2013
After our travels and service, convention finally came along as hundreds of Key Clubbers were checking into the hotel and hanging around the lobby. The first evening of convention, all the districts were gathered into one giant room for the official ICON meet and greet, where we were being busy bees | JULY 2013

CONVENTION Speeches were made and tears were shed, but International Convention 2013 was a great one! After the official adjournment of the closing session, Key Clubbers ended the night raising money for MNT and making memories at the Eliminate Dance before all the districts went their separate ways the next day. Overall, we California-NevadaHawaii Key Clubbers had a phenomenal time in Washington D.C. for the 70th Annual Key Club International Convention! Hopefully next year, many of you will be able to attend ICON 2014 in Anaheim, CA and join in on the fun experience!

For the month of July, Andrew Hill Key Club volunteered at the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden! We spent our evening cutting off dead roses, allowing other roses to grow with a fresh start! For the month of August, we plan to have a club bonding with HOSA and while we’re at it, we will be painting a mural together! We also plan on having a food fund raiser with Santa Teresa Key Club at Famous Dave’s and a carwash with Andrew Hill’s CSF!
Heritage Rose garden
On a hot July evening, a few of Andrew Hill’s dedicated Key Clubbers joined together to help the roses at the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden have a better start. We were also joined by some of Santa Teresa’s Key Clubbers! With our gloves and tools, we helped rim down a bunch of dead roses, guiding them to a new beginning. We didn’t mind the hot weather at all! We didn’t just remove the dead roses, but we also stopped and smelled them! Just kidding, we took a break to pose with the flowers. I mean, why would someone want to miss out on pictures with such beautiful roses?! To end our evening, we were treated to some delicious ice cream! We thank the SJ Heritage Rose Garden for giving up such a great opportunity to do something good for our community. -

ann SOBRATO In July, Sobrato Key Club carried banners in the annual Morgan Hill 4th of July Parade on July 4th. On Thursday July 11th, we volunteered to set up the Obon Festival in Downtown San Jose’s Japantown. As a reoccurring service project, we helped Project Coordinator repair barriers in Morgan Hill for his Eagle Project. Sobrato held a board meeting to plan for the school year on July 22nd with LTG Lindon Tran. On July 27th, Sobrato Key Club will host a carwash in Downtown San Jose with Willow Glen Key Club to support the ELIMINATE Project and PTP.

The 4th of July Parade in Morgan Hill started with a BANG! Literally. In the distance, you could hear the several local high school marching bands, including our very own, Ann Sobrato. Key Clubbers held banners and walked the parade in front of thousands of Morgan Hill residents. After that, volunteers helped clean up! Although the day was hot, it wasn’t going to stop our fellow Firebenders who have a fiery desire to volunteer! - Jessica Wong Ann Sobrato Key Club

EVERGREEN VALLEY In July, Evergreen participated in Historic Orchard, Second Harvest Food Bank distribution, Heritage Rose Garden, and Music in the Glen. Upcoming events include a social for Key Clubbers to get pumped for the upcoming school year and to attract freshmen. This will be at Fowler Park in August. Board members have also been meeting to create cheers to incrase the spirit in our club. Over summer, our club had the goal of 400 hours – and with the help of our members, we were able to reach almost 300. We still have time to meet our goal, so we will be volunteering at the Sausage Fest
heritage ROSE GARDEN
Six Equalists from Evergreen Valley Key Club volunteered at the Heritage Rose Garden on July 13th. These volunteers woke up early on a Saturday morning to “mulch,” which is basically scooping mulch from a pile, placing it onto a wheel barrel, and distributing it around the garden. Even though it was tiring, the volunteers managed to pull through in order to help maintain the garden. This isn’t the first day these Key Clubbers have volunteers at the Heriate Rose Garden; this event occurs every Wednesday and Saturday throughout July. Not only is it a fun way for Key Clubbers to spend their summer, but it is also beneficial for both the community and the volunteers. -

Gunderson Key Club is working harder than ever to prepare for the upcoming school year. During the month of July we have participated in many events! On July 10th we volunteered at Julian St Inn with our Kiwanis Advisor. On July 13th, we volunteered at Giving to Live 5K. On July 15th, we volunteered at the Obon Festival selling soda. In total we achieved 27 hours of service. With service from June, we are more than 1/3 of the way to reach our Summer Service Hour goal. For the rest of July we have planned and made arrangements to volunteer at Music in the Glen and Books Aloud. We also had two fundraisers at Yogurtland and Scrambl’z. We have planned our whole year and set many goals. The Pacman Ghosts are ready for service!
During the month of July, my favorite service event was Giving to Live 5k. The Giving to Live 5k benefitted Bay Area children and adults living with cancer. The name was taken from the coordinator’s experience with her mother. “During the last days of her life, she was more giving than ever.” This observation motivated the coordinator to give back by holding this race every year. The event was to celebrate life and to remember the lives of our loved ones. It really impacted me to see all of the emotions. To contribute to such a great cause couldn’t get any better. I hope to see you guys next year at this event! I also can’t wait to meet more of my Division 12 South ohana, so don’t be afraid to say hi! -

In the month of July, our club participated in the following service projects: July 13 – “Giving to Live” 5K July 13 – Relay For Life Cupertino July 21 – Dash of Hope 5k/10k July 26 – Rose Deadheading July 30 - Veggielution
Projects our club led are: 7/23 – Painting Envelopes for Sunday Friends We paint envelopes and sent them to the Sunday Friends Organization 7/26 – Blankets for Kids / Club Bonding We’ll make blankets for the organization Blankets for Kids where these blankets are given to abused and at risk kids in the Bay Area and LA.

GIVING TO LIVE 5K Volunteering for the Giving to Live 5K Run was a great experience that I would most definitely join in on again. We arrived at 8AM and helped set up booths, then we were assigned to stations such as the water booth, registration, and food. Fashion Your Mind Organization (FYMO) coordinated the event and gives all proceeds directly to cancer patients in our community. It felt wonderful to give back to the community! - Diana Knott, Leland Key Club During our board meeting this month we discussed opening a new website. We currently use the Yahoo Database to keep track of all projects, but we want to make it more accessible for everyone through the simple click of a website. The website will have a Facebook log in to make it even more convenient to identify people. We will also be having a car wash on August 24th! (Date is tentative).

Oak Grove In the month of July, we were not able to do much service or fundraising because our board was out of town or unavailable. But we accomplished a fund raising event with Sipatea and raised $19. We are trying to hold another fund raising event at Tapioca Express and are currently planning on hosting the August DCM.
Sipatea Fundraiser The Sipatea fundraiser didn’t go as well as our first fundraiser with Tapioca Express. The word kind of got out late because the Sipatea coordinator was delayed in creating a Facebook event page for it, so it wasn’t that successful. But we did raise about $19 from the 15% profit donated to us! - Jason Bui Oak Grove Key Club

DIAMOND DIAMOND DISTINGUISHED DISTINGUISHED This month Pioneer Key Club attended some exciting events! Six members attended OTC and we all learned from the exciting workshop and bonded with Region 17. We also had members attend the Campbell Relay For Life. We raised a total of $500 for the American Cancer Society with the help of our Kiwanis advisor Chris VerBerg who donated $110. We were also very lucky to have Chris offer to spend the night with us. Music in the Glen has been going on and a few of our members have been attending this fun event. We’ve also attended the Kiwanis DCM in which our club as presented with the Diamond Distinguished award which we were given at ICON but could not receive because none of our members went. We are currently schedule to attend a book sale at Edenvale Library and we still need to hear back from the Salvation Army to see if they need our help distributing backpacks for kids in need of school supplies. Overall, our July has been great and hopefully it will continue to be.
This month we participated in Relay For Life at Campbell. Along with 35 other teams, a total of 387 people, we walked laps on a track to raise money in the fight against cancer. Many of us had dinner together at Sonoma Chicken Coop and slept overnight. Although it was a bit chilly, it was worth it to spend the time with fellow Key Clubbers and to met new people. Together, we raised a grand total of $255,314.08 from the event. - Ryan Choy Pioneer Key Club

For the month of July, Santa Teresa Key Club venture out from our usual volunteer events to try our newer service opportunities. Aside from attending the Campbell Relay For Life, where we volunteered for setting up as well as attending and donating over $1000 to the American Cancer Society, we also worked with other schools such as Andrew Hill by attending their Heritage Rose Garden event. We also worked with Willow Glen by sending volunteers to all of their Music in the Glen events in July. Another event we’re excited about is that we’ve started working with the AASC (Asian American Center of Santa Clara County) on a summer school program for underprivileged youth in East San Jose. Towards the end of the month, we volunteered at three separate Edenvale Library Book Sales, as well as Salvation Army’s bell ringing in Los Gatos, and Santa Teresa’s Freshmen Orientation as both tour guides and club booth representatives. Lastly, we are in the middle of planning a fundraiser collaboration with Andrew Hill at Famous Dave’s BBQ to end our summer vacation.
On July 9th, Santa Teresa joined Andrew Hill at Guadalupe Heritage Orchard to help trim down rose bushes. We were all given a pair of gloves, trimmers, a tarp, and a row of rose bushes to beautify. Being able to work with my friends to make this rose orchard a nicer place for people to appreciate nature warmed my heart. I am always willing to serve my community if it means I get to make others smile through my actions. -

Silver Creek Key Club has been enjoying a fairly lax summer so far. We’re planning ahead for what we hope will be an amazing year. This last month, the board members and I have had a group get together where we discussed plans, fleshed out ideas, and went over the changes we will be making next year. In addition, we’ve had one-on-one training sessions between myself and my amazing officers to develop each office position a little further. This year, foremost, we’ll hope to see an increase in enthusiasm and spirit. Starting our second meeting, following our basic introduction and explanation of what we do as Key Clubbers, we will be putting heavy emphasis on Key Club spirit and energy. In the month of July, aside from Music in the Glen, Willow Glen Key Club is also in a program called Read Write Discover, where we tutor kids who are ELL (English Language Learners) every Monday and Tuesday (July 17th-August 6th). We work with a kid individually with their English. Early in the morning on July 4th, we volunteered at the Rose, White, and Blue parade. We helped decorate classic cars for their owners. For upcoming events we have the BIG carwash with Ann Sobrato Key Club! We are fundraising for the ELIMINATE Project and club funds. It is on July 27th from 9AM-2PM (471 E Santa Clara Street, San Jose CA). We will be selling fresh cold lemonade for $1! We also have the Sausage Fest coming up on August 4th in Los Gatos. The race benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
In the beginning of July, Willow Glen Key Club did many active events. We had Music in the Glen since the start of summer, every Thursday (June 20th-August 8th). This year has been the eleventh year of Music in the Glen and it’s been wildly successful! During the event we set up, sell great cooked food from the Kiwanis (hot dogs, nachos, soda, fruit cups, pretzels, etc.) and clean up right after! It wouldn’t have been as successful as it has been without the help of Evergreen Valley, Gunderson, Oak Grove, Pioneer, Santa Teresa, and Yerba Buena Key Clubs for all the help these past weeks at Music in the Glen!

YERBA BUENA In July, YBKC volunteered for Willow Glen’s Music in the Glen on July 11th. We had four officers in attendance and volunteered from 5:30PM to 8:30PM. It was quite an experience serving the community while enjoying the very moment of it, especially working with new faces and the officers in the Kiwanis booth. YBHS Key Club also hosted a Sipatea and Pho Ha fundraiser on July 12th and we’re planning on hosting another one very soon! Currently. We’re in the process of preparations in recruitments and orientation. Also, of course, planning all of the service events ahead of us!
This month of July, Yerba Buena Key Club served at Music in the Glen. We collaborated with Willow Glen Key Club! We helped sell food to the people in the community who wanted to enjoy a snack while listening to the concert. It was a fun and interesting event for all of us because we could all groove to the music while helping and sometimes talking to our customers while they waited in line to pay for their food! - Allen Nguyen Yerba Buena Key Club

FROM THE LTG HELLO SUPER VILLAINS! I hope summer has been treating you all well! I’m so happy to be able to be back in wonderful California with nice weather – east coast humidity was definitely not my favorite part of ICON. I would like to remind you all to continue to keep your club goals in mind and to serve, serve, serve! One of the main goals I had for the division was to make sure that clubs were taking advantage of the summer to serve and to fundraise. Keep in mind that our division goal for this term is 20,000 hours! Thank you for all your golden work so far!
