WELCOME TO 2023!
I hope everyone ended 2022 with positivity and entered 2023 with no worries and no regrets. I actually missed the countdown for PST, so my family celebrated with the CST peeps in New Orleans HAHA! I’m quite excited for 2023 because that means prom and graduation. However, at the same time, I’m not ready to depart from Key Club in April. I’ve made incredible memories with you guys that I’ll cherish forever! Let’s make the best of these last four months of the term
My first and last Rose Float… it was definitely something LOL. For the most part, I enjoyed cutting flowers and decorating a float with Evelyn, NIsha, Serina, Rocio, and Jennifer :) We were SO HUNGRY by lunch time and it really got to us because we bought $15 carne asada fries with no hesitation — it was worth it though no complaining there!
Can’t wait to see what 2023 holds for me and everyone! Use this year to start anew!!
Wishing you a good year,
THE 03

What is the Kiwanis Children’s Fund? KIWANIS CORNER
MISSION
We develop resources that transform the goodwill and vision of Kiwanians into programs that serve the children of the world. We focus on issues Kiwanians care about, particularly in the areas of education and literacy, health and nutrition, and youth leadership development — as well as our efforts to fight maternal and neonatal tetanus and iodine deficiency disorders.
IMPACT
For Kiwanians around the world, caring for children in need begins at the community level. The Kiwanis Children’s Fund provides grants to clubs and districts as well as Key Clubs and Circle K International clubs. We’re a global force for good, working to address the health and education needs of children through our worldwide network of volunteers and clubs.
HISTORY
It began with 25 silver dollars. That’s the donation that Walter Zeller made in 1940 — the first in our history. But there was an idea behind Zeller’s gift: Inspire fellow Kiwanians to build on that donation. And we have been – for more than 80 years.
GRANTS
We help clubs fulfill the unmet needs of kids in their communities. Our grants support Kiwanis-led service projects that focus on health, education and youth leadership development. In communities that struggle to meet all the needs of children, Kiwanians have access to financial support that helps them reach the kids who need Kiwanis.

In December, Division 13 South brought back last term’s X-Factor DCM at Browning High School. Moreover, we had our first tree-planting service event this term. Thank you to those that attended and continue to stay active!
For the first time in Ninja History, the division had a float in the Daisy Lane Parade! Thank you so much to Ms. Lin, Clairose Matias, and Joseph Bass for leading the project as well as Publicity Committee for helping as well. At the parade, members walked a r o u n d t h e neighborhood holding the Kiwanis Key Club banner, singing holiday songs, and greeting the families that came out to watch!
D13S ended the year with the annual R o s e F l o a t! Members helped with vials and decorating floats!

What is Conclave?
Conclave is a region event where the lieutenant governors for the next term are elected. Process-wise, each candidate says their speech then answer questions during the caucus portion. After hearing the speeches and answers, delegates (two max) from each school votes for the candidate they believe is best fit to lead the division and tackle the duties that come with the lieutenant governor position. We hope to see you at this term’s Conclave in February!

What is DCON?
District Convention (DCON) is an annual event where Key Clubbers from the California-Nevada-Hawaii District gather. DCON is 3 days long, each day being packed with events and memory-filled.
At DCON, there are panels where members can learn about various topics. The event is perfect for new club boards because topics presenters go over are on every officer position. This serves as a learning experience and training as the new term arrives.
Astounding members and officers are recognized for their hard work throughout the term. Want to BEE recognized? Check out the contests you can apply to on the CNH Cyber Key!
Moreover, the District Governor, Secretary, and Treasurer are elected. Similar to Conclave, each candidate will present their speech and delegates vote. This portion of DCON is suspenseful yet surreal at the same time.
The term is officially concluded and attendees celebrate at the Governor’s Ball, which is a big party on the last night of the convention.

LINDA KANG | TREASURER | JORDAN
Tree planting is a STAPLE Key Club event! I was super excited to go as the last division tree planting event was pre-Covid :) Conveniently, the location was near Jordan, so I was more than thrilled to attend. The weather and overall vibe of the event was chill. Personally, that is what I like most about Key Club events, you can relax and make memories while serving the community at the same time!

DAISY LANE PARADE
CLAIROSE MATIAS | TREASURER/DNE | POLYTECHNIC
I had the honor of being the main lead of the Daisy Lane Float Project. In Division 13 South history, this was the first time we had a float in the parade; usually sending volunteers to clean up after the event. At first, it was stressful given two weeks to pull this all off. I want to thank Publicity Committee for helping me come up with a design. SPECIAL thank you to Elijah Samaniego and Eloise Ocoboc as on short notice, we met up to cut out and paint the pieces of our design.
The day of Daisy Lane Parade would have to be the most stressful part of my experience. Boxes needed to be wrapped, lights needed to be placed around the vehicle, the arch needed more support… only with so much time on our hands.
With all these factors, I fell to a state of utter stress, pressure, and worry. However, Ms. Lin helped me refocus who I was really doing this for: the members. Watching members work together, she told me, “See? They didn’t know each other, but now they’re friends. Because of Key Club. This is why I do this.” She made me realize that all my efforts in making this float happen was worth it as this very event brought members together.
After setting up our float, it was game time! Attendees walked in front of OUR creation, sang holiday songs, and greeted those that came out to watch the parade; making my first and last Daisy Lane Parade so surreal and unforgettable.

X-FACTOR DCM
MAKELA ORIBELLO | MEMBER | CABRILLO
I would say X-Factor DCM was really fun! I thought it was an unique theme, which made me want to go when I saw the graphic.
After the new and old business and monthly recognition portion, we did an ice-breaker where groups made a tower with their shoes and the tallest one wins!
Following the ice-breaker, the main event started. Members were put into groups and was assigned a theme for their act. My group, Slay, got singing and we sang “Jingle Bells!”
Congrats to the 4-Town group who won with their Squid Game mime act! Can’t wait for next DCM!

ROSE FLOAT
MONICA GUILLERMO | HISTORIAN | WILSON
Rose Float happened on Friday, December 30th. There was great turnout, more than expected. I was happy to see members continuing to stay active!
Rose Float decorating was truly an honor not just for me but so many people in Region 8! Me and a group of ninjas were able to work together to place flowers on the floats with so many different types of glue (I didn’t even know that was possible). At the end, our crew leader told us kiwanis was the best group he’s ever worked with!
As a senior, this was my last Rose Float and events like these is what I will miss most!

Why did you join Key Club?
I joined key club to get more involved with my community and meet new people
What has Key Club taught you?
Key club has taught me appreciate everyone and everything in my community more and take the time to help others.
What is your Key Club moment?
My key club moment was definitely the spirit session I attended! I went with a group of friends and we were in shock of how much spirit and energy everyone had. It made me comfortable being there knowing we’re all doing the same thing and I was able to meet new people from different schools. It was an overall great experience for me and wanted to continue to go to more events.
If someone is reluctant to join Key Club, what would you say?
Key club is more than just a club it’s a family, the more events you attend you realize it’s a second home and everyone is so nice and accepting. It’s a great experience to be more involved in school/community and build your leadership skills!
