“I solemnly swear to lead, so that others may follow” summer

edition

And a happy summer to you all! I hope all you white tigers are excited for the summer! I look forward to seeing you all at the next Key Club events! Remember clubs to stay active even during the summer. Anyways, a huge thank you again to the schools who have sent me newsletters! We recently had our Officer Training Conference (OTC) and another great thank you to the clubs who were present. It was truly a joy seeing so many new faces! If you did not attend the OTC fret not, for it will be covered in this issue and important tips on officer workshops will also be included. In this issue is also the announcement of the new DCON theme for the 2013-2014 year. Thanks for reading and enjoy this issueď Š Jenny Lee d16 tech 2013-2014

On May 1 the executive board of John Burroughs High School had the amazing privilege of joining Mr. Ridnor at the De Bell Golf Course. For most of the officers, it was their first time attending a Kiwanis Breakfast and it was definitely a very enjoyable and memorable experience. From the delicious food served at the golf course, to the good conversations being held, it was all just good laughs and a good time. We are also extremely thankful for the Kiwanis donation to our school that helped pay for our trip to DCON this year. We are also extremely thankful for the generosity of all of our Kiwanis advisors, without their support Key Club would just not be the same. I, along with all the officers look forward to many more breakfasts to attend.

On May 20-21, eighteen members of Bishop Alemany’s key club went to MEND’s stamp out hunger event. They succeeded in sorting 7,000 pounds of food for families in need. This was a really great opportunity that our members took advantage of to help work as a team and make a stand against poverty.

As the 2012-2013 school year was wrapped up, the Golden Valley High School Key club started the summer with some fantastic achievements and goals to come. One of those achievements was the amount of books we collected with the Epic Book Drive, which helps benefit underprivileged families by supplying them with books. Our branch of Key Club collected over 700 pairs of books! In addition to that, GVHS KC has also collected funds for Hurricane Sandy Relief, and a few hundred dollars for PTP. A big thanks goes to our fantastic President last year Jordan Dulay, and we look forward to next year with new officers, a goal of raising over $1400, and our new Presidents William Oh and Isabeau Lauron!

On May 23, 2013 Providence High School Key Club had a fundraiser at California Pizza Kitchen in Burbank. We raised money for our club to sponsor officers to go to DCON.

This past Mother’s Day, some Key Clubbers visited a local community center to serve tea (and other goodies!) to the mothers who resided there. They took time out of their own mother’s day weekend to serve these mothers and they definitely brought some joy into their day. It was something that they haven’t had in a long time and they showed gratitude to our Key Clubbers. It was their day and we were glad to make them smile.

To wind down the 2012-2013 Key Club year, Clubbers actively participated in the annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and fundraised to help breast cancer research. This walk was two days that consisted of 39 miles in many participating cities such as Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Houston, New York, Charlotte, Washington D.C, Chicago, and Boston. Some even organized a Panda fundraiser where twenty percent of the profit earned from students eating at Panda would be donated to the Avon Walk for cancer.

On May 1st, Key Club executive board from old and new “took over” the Kiwanis meeting at YMCA. This annual Kiwanis Take Over was run by our newly elected Officers. The schedule was set and done in the concept of the movie Up as in “Up with service”. From beginning to the end, Officers prepared for decorations, presentations, games, and even the dress code as in the 1950s. It was a great time in acquaintance with Kiwanians and bonding in fellowship between old and new members. Auction, raffle tickets, and games took place as in fundraising. We Officers got auctioned off as well. As a total, we earned nearly $1,000 for our club!! It was truly an exciting achievement! It was an amazing day!
