Our school 1st Vocational school of Ierapetra, Greece

Our school is on Crete in the center of Ierapetra near the sea. Every day we spend a lot of time there.

Our school is a vocational school with many specializations. It is quite big and there are many workshops. When you finish school you can either continue your education or you can start working.

Once you walk inside our school you can see the garden with the flowers that the students cultivate. After you pass the garden, you see the school canteen.

You will also see that we have a lot of workshops and other classrooms for the students to work and learn in.

Most of our subjects are boring and we are sleeping all the time. The only things we enjoy are breaks, physical education, IT and project. At our school some students smoke. At two pm school finishes for the day and when we leave we feel better.

The town and its equipment Bischwiller is very equipped. Indeed, there are two “collèges” and two “lycées”, a performance hall (la MAC), a swimming pool, a sport stadium, and a lot of other buildings. And an anecdote, Bischwiller is the place of birth of Claude Vigée, a Jewish poet who obtained the big price of poetry of the French Academy. In the town, there is a library at his name.

Bischwiller’s history Bischwiller was founded at the end of the XIIth century by the Bishops of Strasbourg which emperor Henri II had granted important domains of hunting to the North of Strasbourg from the beginning of the XIth century. From the end of the XIIIth century the bishops gave up the place to Lords keeping rights until XVth century. The village belongs until 1542 in the hands of several alsatian nobility families. The war of 1870 caused the emigration of more than third of 11 000 inhabitants of Bischwiller. Thanks to the setting up of new factories and the creation of hospitals specialized structures Bischwiller continue his development of industrial city in the North’s Alsace.

Textile Industry in Bischwiller Bischwiller was well-known and rich because of her textile industry in the years 1842 to 1870. A lot of people were working in there. But in 1871, when Alsace has been attached to Germany, the industry met serious difficulties to answer to the requirements of the German market, which is more strict and competitive . Moreover, Bischwiller had to abandon the French Market. Today, the situation has totally changed. There is no more textile industry in the town.

A mix of cultures in Bischwiller In Bischwiller there is a mix of cultures: we can see that on a various religious representation. The Eglise Saint-Augustin is a Catholic Church from the beginning of the 19th Century.

The Protestant Church was built in the 14th Century and is dedicated to the protestant service since the 16th Century.

The Eglise Saint-Nicolas is a Church which is shared between the catholic and protestant services.

The Chapelle de la Jute was built in 1914 by an Alsatian factory for their Polish workers. Since 2004 the Catholic community has given the Chapel to the Greek orthodox community.

The Synagogue has been destroyed during the 2nd World War and then has been rebuilt in 1959. Today it is not used anymore because the Jewish community doesn’t have enough members.

The Mosque is a very recent Turkish Mosque which opened in May 2015. The Turkish muslim community is very present in Bischwiller.

Some statistics about Bischwiller In 2012 there were 12 659 people who lived in Bischwiller. 48 years ago, in 1968, there were around 8 700 residents in this town. This graph show us the evolution of the population of Bischwiller. The surface of this town measured 17,25 km², that is to say around 10,56 mi². Bischwiller is located at 25 km of Strasbourg and 7 km of the german frontier.

Bischwiller, a typical style Bischwiller is an old industrial city which kept a certain local style. It is true that the “alsatian” house style is quite beautiful and traditional. We can observe the famous and beautiful half - timbering on big houses. They are also big mansion house dating from the textile time. We see also old important establishments such Half-timbering as : city house, train station … . construction Train station
