Introduction

Gmos and pesticides are major scientific steps forward. In the 70s first GMOs appear and pesticides are used since Antiquity with sulfur and arsenic. Are they dangerous ? Are they authorized ? What are exactly GMO’s and pesticides ? Let’s try to get answers.

What is GMO? GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Where are GMOs authorized? Why not everywhere? GMOs are available in the USA, Asia, Africa,...It’s actually available everywhere except in Europa because we cannot be sure of the secondary effects on the environment. The European Union passed laws to ban any product which shows risks for health or environment. However GMOs importation is authorized.

Where are GMOs used? USA, Brazil, Argentina, India, Canada, China, Paraguay, Pakistan, South Africa and Uruguay are the 10 largest GMOs producers. They represent 98 % of the world surface cultivated in GMOs. However, they are not the only consumers : only 3 countries in the world have banned production and consumption of GMOs. Considering that no one else prohibit GMOs for consumption, they are used throughout the world.

What are pesticides? Pesticides are organic compounds designed to kill specific plants or animals considered as pests. They are expensive commodities used only where necessary. Some pesticides are available for domestic use while most number of them are available for commercial use. Farmers, local authorities and individuals use pesticides.

Are all pesticides dangerous? Scientific studies show that pesticides are a cause of cancer, congenital malformations, infertility and neurological problems or even weakened immune system. However media only tell about the adverse effects of pesticides and never refers to the good ones. Pesticides are indispensable to feed the 7 billions humans we are. Whether you are aware of or not, you ate pesticides, you eat pesticides and surely you will eat pesticides. If they were all dangerous, no one would still be alive...

Is it dangerous to consume genetically modified food? GM foods currently available on the international market have passed safety assessments and are not likely to present risks for human health. In addition, no effects on human health have been shown as a result of the consumption of such foods by the general population in the countries where they have been approved. Continuous application of safety assessments based on the Codex Alimentarius principles and, where appropriate, adequate post market monitoring, should form the basis for ensuring the safety of GM foods.

Is it possible to stop using pesticides? As said above, “Pesticides are indispensable to feed the 7 billions humans we are. Because we are always more plentiful and pesticides allow farmers to product faster and more. However, perhaps we can stop using pesticides by given priority to organic food. Then the real question is : could organic food stand in for pesticides, knowing starvation is still a world issue and considering we need to product always more?

Eat right, be bright! Different cultures/ different diets

An eTwinning project by students from Tale Euro Bischwiller’s, France and 1st EPAL Ierapetra’s, Greece

Introduction In the world people of different nation eats different kind of food, the way of eating depends on the cultures. Which factors are at the origin of the different way of eating ?

Does the economy of a country influence the way of eating? The relationship between low socioeconomic status and poor health is complicated and is influenced by gender, age, culture, environment, social and community networks, individual lifestyle factors and health behaviours. Population studies show there are clear differences in social classes with regard to food and nutrient intakes. Low-income groups in particular, have a greater tendency to consume unbalanced diets and have low intakes of fruit and vegetables .

Do religions change the way of eating of α society ? Religion has a big impact in most countries. Hindus in India don’t eat cows because they consider them sacred. Muslims don’t eat pigs because they consider them impure. Jews don’t eat pork or shellfish because according to their religion they can only eat animals that chew their cud (i.e chew their food twice) and have split hooves. Pigs do have split hooves but do not chew their cud, so they cannot eat pig meat and its derivatives. In the seafood department, we may only eat fish that have both fins and scales. Does religion affect what Greek people eat during the fasting period? Religion affects what Greek people eat during the fasting period. For longer or shorter periods of time throughout the year religious Greek people fast. They don't eat meat, eggs and dairy products.

Does religion affect what French people eat? In France everybody has a different religion, so they eat what their religion say what they can or not eat. We have the example of the christians who eat fish on friday, most of the muslims who do not have the right to eat pork or to drink wine. The Jehovah’s witness have not the right to eat any aliment who contains blood. So we can see that there are many way of eating in France influenced by otheo religions. It is the freedom of worship who permits this variety of way of eating. In France there are many people who didn’t have religion, so they can eat what they want.

Why does the vegetarian or the vegetalian stop eating meat ? And what are the differences between these two diets ? First, the vegetarian and the vegetalien diets are widespread into the countries which are developed, because thanks to the society the population have freedom of speech, so they can struggle against the ill-treatments on animals. That is why little by little the mindsets are evolving. There are other countries, where the meat is too expensive and that is the reason why people becomes vegetarian, like in India. The difference between the the vegetarian and the vegetalian diet is big. First we will speak about the vegetarian diet and the change it includes. Become vegetarian that is to say that the person does not eat any meat who comes from terrestrial or marine animals. No milk, seafood or eggs in the dish too. Become vegetalian ( or strict vegetarian ) is a harder choice. The person can eat only vegetable food, no products outcome of animals like honey or candy with gelatin. Most of the time the vegetalien become vegan, that is a way of life, you do not use in any of his aim a thing which deals with the ill-treatments on animals. Both of their diets are good for the body if the person eats meal which brings supply of vitamins and proteins. You feel more fit, because your stomach do not have to digest the meat, which is a heavy foodstuff. Furthermore it is a good way to lose weight.

Can some kinds of food considered edible in one country and inedible in another? One of the great joys of exploring other cultures is seeing how and what other people eat. Around the world, people eat tons of other weird items. Here are some examples. Balut, a developed duck embryo boiled alive and eaten in its egg. Really common in Southeast Asia and often served with beer. Casu Marzu, (means rotten cheese) a traditional sheep milk cheese from Sardinia, Italy. The cheese makers set the cheese outside and allow cheese flies to lay eggs inside of it. The larvae are breaking down of the cheese's fats and fermenting it. Fried tarantulas (called a-ping), size of a human palm, Cambodia

How do people in different countries eat their food? Different ways of eating exist in different country, we will name a few : - In Japan, people need to make noise when they eat noodles or soups to show at the chiefs that they appreciate the food. As in so many Asia countries, people eat with chopsticks and woe to that person who cross them ! - In India, Middle-East and some Africa countries, it’s frowned upon to eat with the left hand. - In Chile, be careful not to eat with the hand because this is considered as a very bad way. So prefer the utensils as your finger, in addition you will daub less. - The best for last : in China, the act of burp is a compliment to the cuisine of the chef.

Eat right, be bright! How to cook to preserve vitamins and food supplements

An eTwinning project by students from 2nd Euro Bischwiller’s, France and 1st EPAL Ierapetra’s, Greece

Introduction There are differents ways to cook to preserve vitamines like vitamine A, B, or E and food supplements like iron, potassium or zinc. What is the best way to cook to preserve vitamins? The best way is microwaving. Microwaving may be the healthiest way to cook because of its short cooking times, which results in minimal nutrient destruction. Microwaves cook food by heating food from the inside out. They emit radio waves that “excite the molecules in food, which generates heat, cooking the food.

Why take vitamins? 1- Support healthy aging. As you get older, your body has a harder time absorbing nutrients from food. At the same time, your nutritional needs increase. 2- Boost energy levels. Several studies have demonstrated that taking a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement is associated with increased energy levels. 3- Improve short-term memory. According to a meta-analysis of 10 randomized, placebo-controlled trials, taking a daily multivitamin can result in improvements in short-term memory.

What kind of vitamins and food supplements are the best for health? Supplements can help your bones, your muscles, and many other parts of your body. What about your heart? Research shows that some of them may help lower cholesterol, improve blood pressure, and other things that put you at risk for heart disease. For exemple fiber. Found naturally in fruits, grains, vegetables, and legumes, fiber cuts down the amount of cholesterol your body soaks up from food.

Garlic. It couldlower cholesterol and slightly lower blood pressure. It may slow the buildup of plaque in your arteries, lowering your risk of blood clots. Green tea. Research shows that both the extract and the drink may lower LDL cholesterol.

What is the best way to preserve meat, fish, fruit and vegetables? The best way : Freezing. Fish for example can be frozen for safe storage during the late fall through the winter months. But this technique works for fruits, vegetables and meat too. Freezing might be the best way to preserve.

Are food supplements good for our health? Yes they are, but without abuse. Vitamins perform key functions: ● Vitamin C builds immunity and connective tissue. ● Vitamin A enhances immunity and helps growth. ● B-vitamins are essential for energy. ● Vitamin D strengthens bones.

Are there any negative consequences if you consume too much of some vitamins or food supplements? Mega doses of single vitamins can have toxic effects. Stored in the liver, it can accumulate to reach toxic levels and cause liver damage. We would die without vitamins and fall seriously ill when we don't get the right amount.
