News & Updates

Hey Jellies! Have you noticed how each newsletter has its own color scheme and theme? If you have any ideas or suggestions on what our November DNEWS should look like, send me an e-mail and I’ll see what I can do! Key Club is really starting to pick up with all the upcoming events and service events! I can’t believe that Key Leader is in a few days! Excitement is literally running through my veins. And then after Key Leader, the Region One & Two Training Conference is a few days afterwards.

If you want your school to be featured in the next Newsletter (D37E Clubs only), then please send me ARTICLES AND PHOTOS of any service projects, events, and or club activities. @ kimvohanh@yahoo.com

Although school is beginning to get hectic, especially for all the Seniors (College applications *cries*), we still do have some free time and what better way to do that than to spend it by doing community service with Key Club? :D Yes, facebook, and games may seem EXTREMELY tempting but let’s use this time to be productive and serve our community instead. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up, it’s the perfect time to be thankful for what we have and being more proactive with our community. As you do these events, PLEASE SEND ME ARTICLES and PICTURES! (: They will be GREATLY appreciated.

Hello everyone! My name is Desirae Lizcano and I am a junior at High Tech High North County. This year, I am very honored to be serving as an Executive Assistant of Division 37 East! I am really looking forward to having a great year, meeting all the Jellies and people reading this article, and planning some nifty events and meetings! Anyways, a little information about myself is that I was born in Corpus Christi, Texas and moved to California when I was 7 years old. I am also a Hula and Tahitian dancer with a group called Halau Hula O Ka’eo. I am super friendly and outgoing, meaning that you can ask me “Hey Desirae, How Do You Feel?” and I will reply with the Key Club Cheer as loud as I possibly can! I absolutely love meeting new people, and I do not like being a stranger to anyone. If you would like to talk to me, just come up and say “Hello,” I don’t bite... I promise! I joined Key Club because I wanted to be a part of my community and make a true difference. I always hear people say “I want to make a difference” but do they really take action? I am wholeheartedly that person who will take action. Something that I really take into consideration is how to make a change, and how to be that person to step up to say & do what’s right. In my personal opinion, Key Club isn’t all about community service, it is a combination of respect, commitment, character, honesty, trust, and most importantly, leadership! Honestly, I did not know what Key Club was until this past summer. It had not yet phased me that it has always been something that I’ve wanted to be a part of. I was constantly telling my parents and family my ideas about making a change and being an individual. On my own, I discovered that Key Club is where I needed to be because of my strong independence and confidence in others. I am not afraid to say that I Love Key Club! Here are three reasons why I love Key Club: 1) The experiences and new friendships. 2) The opportunity to influence others in making the right decisions. 3) Key Club is what we make it. We can strive to make it AMAZING! I would like to ask one last question... How Do YOU Feel???? Desirae Lizcano (Division 37 East Executive Assistant) High Tech High North County

Hello all! My name is Caitlin Leamon, I’m a senior at Escondido Charter (Go White Tigers!), and I am also a D37 East Spirit Coordinator! The people closest to me would describe me as creative, loud, and enthusiastic. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like the definition of a Spirit Coordinator to me! This is only my first year being a member in Key Club, but I was inspired to join after I was selected for a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) toward the end of my junior year. Part of the award was a tuition to a weekend leadership conference. While I was there I realized that everything I do now changes the world I will live in and I thought to myself, “What can I do to better my community?” That question was answered when I went back to school the next week. Mrs.Dunlap, my Spanish teacher and the Key Club advisor, eagerly pushed me to join. AND I DID! I wanted to help the Key Club officers with their load, so I ended up being the treasure’s un-official personal assistant, which was fine by me because I just wanted to help them out. When the September DCM came around, I was excited. It was my first divisional event! Needless to say, I enjoyed it so much I wanted to be a part of the Spirit Committee. I’m enjoying it so far and I have found that recently I am more drawn to purple clothes than any other color. I can’t wait for my Jellies to make me proud at RTC and fall rally! I also can’t wait to premiere my jellyfish hat at RTC. That’s right, jellyfish hat, as in a hat shaped like a jellyfish. Hope that I’ll see you there! Purple Pride, Caitlin Leamon Escondido Charter

My name is Kiana lei Aguirre I am a former Key Clubber and a senior at San Marcos high school. During my junior year I joined Key Club for the first time and it was defiantly an experience I’ll never forget. Not only was I helping the community but I felt good about it. Now I wish I could tell you an incredible story about why I joined Key Club or about someone who inspired me to join but this isn’t that case. To be honest I really cannot remember “Why I joined Key Club?” except for the fact most of my friends were in it and I needed community service hours. Basically Key Club seemed like the right decision. I was right. Key Club not only helped me with community service hours but it made community service fun. Whenever you had an event no one really complained about doing it. Instead they just had fun while learning along the way. This year in Key Club I could already feel the motivation and spirit people have for Key Club and I became super excited. Meeting new people, fall rally and community service along the way? This seems like fun to me; but I wanted to be much more than just a “Key Club member” I wanted to be more involved. So when our Lieutenant Governor Justine asked the question about anyone interested in being part of the divisional spirit committee I didn’t hesitate to ask. Now that I am part of our divisional spirit committee I love it. I now feel more like a leader and I cannot wait to see us “jellies” take over this year and the great enthusiasm people have for Key Club. Kiana Lei San Marcos

PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM SERVICE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS (SLP) GRANT PROGRAM As part of its primary focus, the Kiwanis Cal‐Nev‐Ha Foundation established the Pediatric Trauma Grant Program to assist the Kiwanis family in financing Pediatric Trauma Program projects on a start‐up basis. Many times, a club will give up on a worthwhile project because the funds required to get the project started are not available. To assist Service Leadership Program (SLP) clubs in developing club service projects, the Cal‐Nev‐Ha Foundation makes available Pediatric Trauma Program grants for new projects, by providing matching start‐up funds, up to $250.00. The Foundation Board of Directors established a maximum to ensure an optimum number of SLP clubs are able to participate in the program. New projects are defined as projects conducted for the first time by the Kiwanis club applying for the grant. When the Kiwanis project is part of a larger event or community‐wide project, the Foundation must know what portion of the event/project is the Kiwanis club project. To qualify for a grant, the Foundation requires club service hours be committed to the project and club funds are spent on the project.

Hello Key Club Officers! Does your club often struggle with the need for more club officer commitment? Do you want to leave a lasting legacy behind for your clubs to serve and fundraise more than ever before?! The CNH PIE Committee has developed the perfect resource for your club: Club Officer Agreement to Serve Forms (ASFs)! : )

Why have ASFs? ASFs hold club officers to higher standards of service, commitment, cooperation with division LTGs and Kiwanis Sponsoring Clubs. How do they work? It’s really simple… Before officer elections, each candidate for club office will sign their corresponding agreement to serve form with minimum duty requirements that they have to promise to fulfill in order to run for club office (i.e. a club president signs a president’s agreement to serve form). Each club is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to adopt these forms. Recommended versions of the agreement to serve forms are available at the following link: found here.

Start Paying // October 1st Early Bird* // November 1st Regular Deadline // December 1st Dues become Delinquent // December 2nd Supplementary // February 1st Suspension // February 1st

Members, please remember to pay your dues when the window for YOUR CLUB is open! Dues, which each member pays to officially belong to Key Club International, are used to provide many services. These services include service program materials, leadership training, conventions and conferences, professional development, fellowship opportunities, member-support information, Key Club magazine, club mailings, literature on membership development, membership recruitment, public relations, and club officer training. Remember, in order to be a Key Clubber in GOOD STANDING, you must pay your DUES! This is a once a year membership fee that allows you to be officially recognized as a member by the Key Club district. This money ultimately goes back to YOU- the members! Please pay your dues as your DUES ARE DUE. See what I did there? Each club has a different procedure, so PLEASE CONTACT your Club officers to pay your dues! This is highly important if you are planning on attending our larger events, such as District Convention and International Convention. And hey, if you are interested in running for a higher office within Key Club, you must absolutely PAY YOUR DUES.

The Pre-RTC/ Spirit Meeting was a very successful event. It started at 12pm-2pm and while we were there everyone had a chance to make posters for RTC and learn spirited cheers and routines in order for D37East to win the coveted spirit stick for our Kiwanis Advisor Stacy! Judging how the event went, we have a great chance of winning and we hope that many key clubbers can make it to RTC. On another note, the Division Spirit Coordinators also introduced themselves during this meeting; Caitlin Leamon, Brian Duong, and Kiana Aguirre will be organizing the divisions cheers/chants/choreography for our division. It went very well for people that were there as we were able to teach our key club chant, the remix, and a chant made by Caitlin Leamon. For the people that weren’t at the meeting, don’t fret; we will have tutorial videos up soon showing everything you Key Clubbers need to know! We will be having another spirit meeting soon sometime in November before Fall Rally and HOPEFULLY we can get a much better turn out!!!

"November is Prematurity Awareness Month® Each year in the United States, 1 in 8 babies is born too soon. Babies who are born prematurely often face more than an early birthday. Many spend a lifetime struggling with disabilities and health problems. In the United States, premature birth is the leading cause of death among newborns. Around the world, more than a million babies die each year after being born too soon. To support our community’s moms and families, find out what you can do to host an event in the Youth Planning Guide. And on November 17, make sure you change your Facebook status to tell all your friends about the global issue of preterm birth, and invite them to get involved. To learn more about premature birth and our combined efforts to fight the problem, go tomarchofdimes.com. "

November is a time for strength! This month means more than just classes, meetings and projects. November is Kiwanis Family Month, one of the largest celebrations of service in the world. In these thirty days, members of all branches of the Kiwanis family are encouraged to reach out to their inter-organizational counterparts to take on projects and events otherwise impossible. This month is all about the strength of service leaders when they band together—and so is the week that begins it.

Key Club Week gives you the opportunity to show your community what Key Club is truly about: service. Each day places an emphasis on service, to promote Key Club within our homes, schools and communities and to make Key Club a household name. Promote this event by using this half-page Key Club Week ad or this quarterpage Key Club Week ad.

Kick off Kiwanis Family Month with a bang— celebrate Key Club Week!

There is strength in numbers.

The first week of Kiwanis Family Month is devoted to one of its largest and most energetic branches, Key Club International. During the first week of every November, Key Club members from around the world showcase their dedication to leadership, character-building, caring and inclusiveness. In doing so, they’ve made this week into Key Club’s top membership recruitment event—and strengthened our organization and its commitment to caring service.

16

So here’s how to get your numbers up: There are hundreds of ways to celebrate Key Club Week at your school, but to help out, we’ve listed a few top ideas in this guide. Take the suggestions for each day as they are, add your own twists or generate your own unique ideas; Key Club Week at your school is all about what works for you. Just remember, whether it’s numbers, strength, experience or service you’re looking for, recruitment is the key! Learn more about Key Club Week at www.keyclub.org/keyclubweek.

WHEN: November 19th, 2011 WHERE: Six Flags Magic Mountain, Ca. WHY: Experience Motivational Programs, Divisional Spirit Rally, Meet New People, Helping out Pediatric Trauma, and Key Club Spirit.

Due to the District's massive size, two Fall Rallies are held each year; one in Northern California at Great America, one in Southern California at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Thousands of members gather at each of the two theme parks on their selected day, one in October, and one in November. At Fall Rally North and South, LTGs and Executive officers are "auctioned" off to Divisions; the winning Division is able to then spend a designated period of time with the "purchased" officer. Auction funds and a portion of the ticket sales for both events go towards Pediatric Trauma Prevention and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. For more information regarding registration or any other information, visit www.cnhkeyclub.org/events/fall-rally

MONDAY, NOV. 7 Show your K in every way—Show people what Key Club is all about! Spread the word by wearing Key Club gear and publicizing Key Club Week in local stores, your school Web site, community newspapers—even on the radio. Officially announce Key Club Week in your community with a proclamation and refer to the Key Club public relations manual to get great tips on how to publicize Key Club in your community.

TUESDAY, NOV. 8 Kudos to the Key players—Personally thank all the Key Club supporters you know—teachers, advisors and other Key players. Write thank-you notes, host an appreciation dinner or do something uniquely your own style to recognize the contributions of these special people.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 9 Connect the Ks—Key Club is the largest high school

the Kiwanis family. Celebrate the entire family of Kiwanis by getting the whole gang involved. Connect with local Kiwanis, Circle K International, Builders, Kiwanis Kids or Aktion clubs and team up for a joint service project.

THURSDAY, NOV. 10 Bring a friend to Key Club—More members = more service. Increasing the amount of service Key Club performs increases the impact Key Club has on the world. Bring a friend, or two, or more to your next Key Club meeting. Download recruitment resources.

FRIDAY, NOV. 11 Your way—This is your club’s chance to do its own thing and make its mark. Pick a project, plan a recruitment party or combine activities from the other Key Club Week days. Whatever idea you choose, take it and run with it.
