Concept Project
Project Brief The purpose of the assignment was to create a product with a paradigm shift, a new & different approach, and one that utilizes different technologies & materials. It also included light as an inspirational obstacle for developing the final product. My personal approach to this project was to push the stretch of my imagination with both the idea behind the project and the physical development of the product itself. While still remaining true to my design ethics of user centered and joy creating design. This project also allowed me to merge my passion for music with my passion for design.

Concept Creation “Write what you know. A strong word of advice given to many aspiring authors. As designers we also take on the role of authors when we re-transmit our feeling into products. The Concept was highly reliant on creating an experience. So I drew from my personal experience of playing music with friends and in a few bands to conceive my product concept. By analyzing the experience of playing music with others I was able to notice a major issue that could be solved.
The Problem Playing music with others is a joyous experience of pure collaboration. But one negative experience involved with it is having to lug all your gear back and forth between the practice spaces. Another issue is the loss of being able to collaborate due to proximity when a friend moves away.

Current Experience The current experience of trying to meet up with other people to play consist of having to pack and unpack all your equipment, travel time, and set up time. Playing with people is limited to the people you personally and who are a close distance away.

John had to move away for work reasons. He is looking forward to the great opportunities of a new city, but is sad that he had to break up his band. And furthermore cannot jam out with his friend Paul anymore, who he has been playing with since they were teenagers. John is also worried that he will have trouble finding people to play music with in his new city. In order to lighten his moving cost, John sold his amp back home and decided to just buy an upgrade in his new city. While at the music store he comes across Cadence and decides to try it out. (1) (2) At home he pulls it out of its box and plugs it in. Immediately the machine welcomes him with a warm glow reminiscent of a sun carving its rays over a mountain sunrise. It prompts him to create a quick account and then runs him through its features. (3) The first feature he tries out is recording. The machine encourages him to start playing when he’s ready. John plays freely like he normally would, jumping from style to style, riff to riff. At one point he stops jumping around and begins to develop a riff further. Trying out chord changes and different patterns. Then he taps the side of the machine lightly, with his foot. The node has been saved. The smart technology in the machine calculates the tempo and bars of the riff, making it ready for anyone else to enjoy. A this point the bottom of the machine begins to glow. John is either able to upload his riff to Cadence’s Collaborative library, save it for himself to riff over, or Send it to a friend. (This call all be quickly done with the tap he decides to do on the console). John is impressed with how easy it is to use. (4) John then flips the entire machine over, accessing the interface screen. He adds a title to his riff and sends it to the Cadence Media Share. He then begins to look through the people Online. His options are by distance (local, worldwide), genre, instrument. He looks around and finds George, a local musician 9 miles away. With similar music tastes he quickly listens to George’s uploaded riffs and likes what he hears. He sends a request to Jam out together. George accepts his request. They talk through the device a bit and then start playing. (5) They are having a good time, when George gets a call on his end. His friend Richard, who lives on the other side of town, wants to join too. They allow him through and all play for a while. As they progress in their session, the device begins to light up and change form through light play in sync with the beat and style of music they are playing. In the ends they have the basis for a new song, so they all sync record and upload it to the media center. George then invites John to go grab a quick drink and see a local band. John is happy he was able to make a new musician friend in this new city and is excited to tell his friend Paul about the device so he can get one too and they can jam out together again. (6) Upon disconnect, John simply pulls the screen back down and turns off his amp. The device fades out.

Product Development
9
As a concept project I approached the many aspects of the product itself from a wide virtue as well. This included the way we interact with the physical product, the experience the product evokes with it’s feedback, and the form of the product.
Feedback Feedback of the device was explored through mostly light and sound. Options were chosen to evoke a specific mood and emotion, such as a warm welcome, calm & satisfactory goodbye, and a sense of spectacle.
Interaction Interaction was explored to provide a more immersive, and unique experience. As a concept project, I wanted the interaction to push beyond the currently common defaults of a interface or voice command. Observing the way people interacted with other people and objects themselves was an exercise I explored to create a more natural language when interacting with my product.
Concept Project
Form The form of the design was further inspired by light and physical model experiments. As a project that was defined by a paradigm shift, I decided to take an alternative approach to developing the form, by being more hand on.

Getting the concept of the light spectacle to be realized was done through a series of experiment where I diffused different lights through different glasses filled with water.

Final Product 15
Material The final form was built out of wood in order to fit in with the natural wood material many instruments are made of, as well as offer a more home like, tranquil touch to the product.
Varying Positions The product has 3 positions for 3 types of intractability.
Record Mode With the screen facing away and open space below the unit. This position keeps the unit subdued and hidden. Allowing the musician to be one with their instrument. The open space allows for gestural interaction, if the musician decides to make use of the unit.
Screen Mode The screen can be accessed by pulling the unit down. Were the main tracking and recording screen can be tweaked with or the Online community can be connected with.
Jam Session Mode The unit can be flipped once more, away from the user to display a light show that brings a mood to the room and aids the musicians in syncing together when they jam out.
Concept Project
Gestural Interaction
Record Mode
Uses smart AI software to keep track of your riffs, chord progressions, tempo, and bars. The recordings can be played back to the musician to build over or uploaded to Cadence Live to share with other musicians.
Cadence Live
Online user profile allows musicians to share creations and projects to collaborate and connect with other musicians around the world. This will allow musicians to be able to play with one another and not be limited by proximity.
16
By waving a foot or a hand below the unit briefly, quick commands such as recording or playback can be done easily. Without having to take their hands off their instruments. This allows the musician to be more immersed with their instrument just like they would be immersed when viewing a spectacle such as the crepuscular rays.

The Experience
Activation Cadence activates as soon as it hears you play a note. It gives off a soft blue glow, reminiscent of a sunrise coming over a sunset. Beating to your tempo. The machine records every riff, chord progression, and node. Ready to play it back as soon as you ask for it.
Recording Feature The recording feature is seamless and allows self creation to be seamless and fun, as inspired by building a pillow fort as a child.

Deactivation Mode
By entering Jam Session Mode, a light show can display on your walls. The rays will become sharper and more in unison as you sync better with the other musicians you are playing with. This was inspired by the v rays can bring people together for a awing spectacle.
Deactivating Cadence is also seamless, as it just turns itself off as soon as it senses you’ve unplugged and walked away.
